Description

A LIBRARY OF REVERSIBLE ELASTOMER-FLUID TRANSITION MATERIALS AND THEIR MAGNETIC EQUIPMENT LIBRARY

[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION

[0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 63 / 621,393, filed January 16, 2024, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety including any tables, figures, or drawings.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0003] Magnetic smart soft materials have become a hot research topic in the soft robotics (device) field in recent years because of their advantages, such as high flexibility, lightweight, accurate response, and wireless control. Magnetic smart soft materials mainly refer to silica-based magnetic materials, that is, soft materials that are mixed with magnetic powder before silicone rubber curing and have a polar response after magnetization by a high-intensity magnetic field, and such materials can accurately respond to an external driving magnetic field to produce controllable elastic deformation. By applying such silica-based magnetic materials, researchers have successfully developed crawling soft robots, rolling robots, jumping robots, and magnetic guide wires for biomedical engineering scenarios based on magnetic response. On the other hand, a few magnetic smart soft materials refer to magnetically responsive powder-based liquid metals and magnetic non-Newtonian fluids. This class of materials, also known as magnetic phase change materials, can achieve reversible phase transitions in solid and fluid states. For example, based on the magnetic response, powder-based liquid metal is solid at less than about 40 degrees Celsius, has an elastic modulus of up to 2-3 GPa, and can carry out controlled movement, rotation, and jumping motion under the control of an external driving magnetic field. When fluid is at temperatures greater than 40 degrees Celsius, it can flow under the control of an external actuation magnetic field. However, the problem of the flexibility of this kind of magnetic phase change materials in the solid state needs to be solved urgently. Reversible solid-fluid phase transformation is an effective means to improve the flexibility of the body greatly. However, the high stiffness in the solid state greatly limits the flexibility of the body. Hence, in recent years, presenting a magnetic material with a reversible phase change involving a more adaptable elastomer-fluid composition has emerged as a challenging issue within the industry.

[0004] Thermoplastic material is a kind of material that can undergo multiple thermal deformations. In its many categories, there is a class of thermoplastic materials that have elasticity in the solid state and high fluidity in the fluid state, and this class of materials just meets the basic needs of elastomeric and fluid reversible phase change magnetic materials. Mixing such thermoplastic materials with magnetic powders has the potential to realize reversible elastomer-fluid phase change magnetic materials. For the remote excitation of the elastomeric fluid phase transition, radio-frequency magnetic induction coils can be used for heating. When radio-frequency magnetic induction heating is applied, the magnetic powder particles mixed in the thermoplastic material will generate Joule heat and hysteresis heat, which will melt into a fluid state when the heat diffuses into the thermoplastic material. At this time, the flow behavior in the fluid state can be realized by applying the background driving magnetic field. When radio-frequency magnetic induction heating is turned off, the material cools and solidifies as heat is dissipated to the environment. The present disclosure describes elastomer-fluid reversible phase change materials and their operation. Additionally, the disclosed embodiments demonstrate that this library of elastomeric fluid reversible phase change materials can be fabricated using magnetic equipment with reversible phase change capabilities. Notably, the mentioned equipment exhibits favorable flexibility in the solid state, and its flexibility and motion capability are further enhanced upon the transition of the elastomer-fluid phase into the liquid state.

[0005] Relative to the prior art, the elastomer-fluid reversible phase change material offers several advantages. Firstly, the elastic state of the material demonstrates exceptional elasticity and the capacity for significant recoverable deformation. Secondly, the transition between the elastomer and fluid states is characterized by a remarkably high and reversible conversion rate. Thirdly, the fluid state exhibits favorable fluidity. Notably, the proposed elastomer-fluid reversible phase change materials possess the ability to form a material library through adjustments in their constituent components, distinguishing them from other phase change materials. In the context of magnetic devices constructed from such materials, they exhibit commendable flexibility in the solid state, rapid state transition capabilities during the transition state, and favorable fluidity in the fluid state.

[0006] The reconfigurable and deployable mechanisms within the proposed magnetic equipment have garnered significant attention within the field of robotics, particularly in applications that necessitate the execution of multifunctional tasks within confined spaces. This technology finds notable relevance in domains such as the surgical environment, where intricate physical access is often encountered, as well as in outer space, disaster scenarios, confined assembly inspections, and similar environments.

[0007] One of the primary advantages offered by reconfigurable robots is their expanded workspace, enabling the execution of more complex and diverse tasks. This parallel can be drawn to amplifiers that possess a larger gain-bandwidth product, as they exhibit greater adaptability compared to those with a smaller gain-bandwidth product. The present disclosure introduces reconfigurations at the interface between the actuator structure and the structure itself, wherein the actuator possesses phase change and magnetic properties, while the structure exhibits origami foldable and constraint coupling properties. The reconfiguration between these interfaces expands the potential configuration space for the structures and enhances control, facilitating the accomplishment of a broader range of tasks within confined spaces.

[0008] Confined spaces, such as narrow passageways, impose spatial constraints during transportation to the task space, thereby limiting the size and shape of the mechanisms. Confined tasks often entail multiple conflicting and specific requirements, and the limited access and resources within a confined environment necessitate novel approaches, precluding the simple combination of two design solutions. One potential solution for structures operating within confined spaces is hyper-redundancy, which accommodates the significant variations within the task space. However, this approach entails complex control due to the under-actuation of the extensive underlying workspace.

[0009] The challenges associated with complex control pose significant obstacles to the resilience of task performance, particularly in the context of space, loading, and environmental uncertainties. To address and balance these challenges, adaptable and reconfigurable designs are desirable. Compliant structures, such as origami-based designs, strike a balance between the properties of rigid and flexible components, offering both flexibility and load-bearing capabilities. Incorporating origami design principles improves loading, control, and precision, resulting in structures that exhibit enhanced dexterity and functionality. While origami structures can be intelligently programmed to respond, functional motion and reconfiguration require actuation. In this disclosure, a reconfigurable actuator belonging to the class of magnetically interactable phase change materials, which can be actuated by magnetic fields while exhibiting temperature-dependent material stiffness, is introduced.

[0010] One important consideration is the trade-off between fluidity and variable stiffness. Fluidity enables a significantly higher strain and shear range, allowing for a greater degree of actuator-structure interface reconfiguration and enabling independent action by the actuator. Reconfigurability at the interface is characterized by the actuator's ability to modify the constraints and interactions of the structure. For this purpose, both the actuator and the structure need to possess a certain degree of reconfigurability. The desired property for the actuator is a phase change between elastic and fluid states. In the fluid state, the actuator can undergo large deformations, facilitating reconfiguration and adaptation. In the elastomeric state, the function of the actuator can range from a flexural hinge to a load-bearing member, depending on the relative stiffness of the materials used in the actuator and structure. The discrete and foldable nature of the structure enhances overall functionality by mitigating the control challenges associated with phase change materials and enabling improved dexterity and precision through structural coupling.

[0011] Traditionally, devices have their structures and actuators pre-assembled. However, this disclosure suggests that the interface between the actuator and structure does not need to be predetermined. By introducing reconfigurability at the actuator-structure interface, a new paradigm emerges for robots and structures to address challenges in confined spaces. In addition to directly activating the underlying workspace, inhibiting constraints provides an alternative approach to expanding the workspace. Through the reconfigurability of this interface, the constraints can be designed as mechanical switches to switch between different configurations reversibly.

[0012] In certain cases, the structure may need to undergo prior assembly or construction before its intended functions can be realized. However, by decoupling the actuator-structure interface, the actuator gains the ability to directly induce structural changes in the structure, thereby altering its mechanical response. This decoupling enables a more dynamic interaction between the actuator and the structure, allowing for real-time adjustments and modifications that can adapt the behavior and functionality of the structure as needed. By empowering the actuator with the capability to directly influence the structural characteristics, the overall system becomes more versatile and responsive to changing requirements and environmental conditions.

[0038] Detailed Implementation

[0039] To emphasize the features and benefits of the present invention, specific embodiments will be described herein with reference to the accompanying figures. It should be understood, however, that the present invention is not limited to the particular embodiments disclosed herein and can be implemented in various other combinations and configurations different from those described. Therefore, the scope of the present invention encompasses all such alternative implementations and configurations.

[0040] Figures 1 and 2 show the operation process of the magnetic shape memory soft actuator 2. A phase-change-oriented family 106 is arranged in the center of the inner part of the soft shell 201, and a deformation-oriented family 107 is arranged at both ends of the inner part. The phase-change-oriented family 106 and the deformation-oriented family 107 have the same axial magnetization direction. When one end of the magnetic shape memory soft actuator 2 is fixed and constrained, the external driving magnetic field is applied, and the unconstrained end will bend in response to the external magnetic field, thereby realizing the bending function of the magnetic shape memory soft actuator 2. Further, in this state, a radio-frequency induced magnetic field is applied to the deformation-oriented family 107 located in the inner center of the soft shell 201, and the phase change from elastomer to liquid occurs under the combined action of Joule heat and hysteresis heat effects. When the radio-frequency-induced magnetic field is canceled, the heat dissipation in the local area causes the deformation-oriented family 107 to solidify again. Remembering the curved shape at the moment, the shape memory function of 2 can be realized.

[0041] Figure 3 shows the running process of the soft crawler 3. In the elastomer state, soft crawler 3 has a certain curvature in its initial state and will roll forward, driven by the external magnetic field. When the external magnetic field is canceled, soft crawler 3 will restore the curvature and crawl forward. When a narrow gap needs to pass through, a radio-frequency induction magnetic field is applied to soft crawler 3, which will undergo a phase transition from the elastomer to the fluid under the combined action of Joule heat and hysteresis heat effects. Then, a rotating magnetic field is applied to the soft crawler 3 in the fluid state, and the liquid will generate flow behaviors to pass through the narrow gap. Further, the liquid can be cured by the uneven terrain surface to replicate the shape of the terrain, again creating a new curvature for crawling motion.

[0042] Figure 4 shows the operation process of a foldable multi-stable soft robot 4. The foldable multi-stable soft robot 4 can be operated in three distinct modes: motion, transport, and output. The motion mode is depicted in the upper right section of FIG. 4. In this mode, the foldable multi-stable soft robot 4 maintains a small contact area with the ground, facilitating movement with minimal resistance. The transport mode is demonstrated in the lower left portion of Figure 4, wherein the foldable multi-stable soft robot 4 can carry heavier objects due to a larger contact area. The output mode is presented in the lower right section of Figure 4. This mode serves as an intermediate mode between the motion and transport modes, allowing for a certain output capacity while minimizing motion resistance or enabling interaction with external objects.

[0043] Figure 5 shows the operation process of the self-dividable and self-reconfigurable magnetic continuum robots 5. Like other millimeter-scaled magnetic continuums, robots 5 can perform flexible bending motions due to the satisfactory stiffness of the responsive continuum 501. The unique advantages over the other robots include self-division and self-reconfiguration functions performed by the self-dividable and self-reconfigurable connections 503. To operate the self-division function, an RF field can be applied to connections 503, when the temperature reaches about 40-50 degrees Celsius, the connections 503 will be significantly softened and divided into two pieces by simply applying mechanical forces, such as stretching or twisting.

[0044] Figure 6 shows the operation process of the direct material printer 6. The direct material printer 6 comprises three functional regions: a nozzle region including a responsive-material nozzle 601, a connection nozzle 602, and a non-responsive-material nozzle 603; a postprocessing region including a cooler fan 604 and a scraper 605; and a base region including a permanent magnet base 607 and a flexible mold 608. The printer can be actuated by the commercially available screws and motors. When the printer tip stably moves, the responsive-material nozzle 601, the connection nozzle 602, and the non-responsive-material nozzle 603 are selected to open according to the printing needs. Normally, a complete continuum at least comprises the responsive continuum 501, the non-responsive body 502, and the connections 503. Therefore, the responsive-material nozzle 601, the connection nozzle 602, and the non-responsive-material nozzle 603 should be opened to print the material in 608, respectively. The function of 607 is to attract the softened continuums 608 downwardly to squeeze the tiny bubbles hidden inside the liquids. After about 5 minutes of curing, the continuums can be demolded and magnetized for their normal uses.

[0045] Figure 7 shows the embodiments of the subject invention. The reconfiguration is embodied by three main concepts. The actuator 701 is a combination of multiple characteristics. When there is a temperature change, elastomer-fluid transition magnetic materials 1 can shift into a different phase 702, which has fluidlike properties and increased compliance and adhesiveness. The reconfigurable actuator is used in conjunction with an origami structure 703. The origami structure is defined by the effective crease pattern design, a combination of facets and hinges allowing certain bulk structural properties, such as constraint coupling. When the two components combine and interact with each other at interface 704, the reconfiguration properties can be achieved. The actuator can impart motion and forces onto the structure, and the structure can impart motion constraints to the actuator to modify the actuator's behaviors.

[0046] Figure 8 highlights the first capability of the reconfigurable interface, the ability of the actuator 801 to attach and actuate a structure 802. In the actuator 801, the actuator takes the form suitable for locomotion, such that it can find the correct orientation about the structure 802. Upon reaching the correct location and orientation, the actuator can undergo phase change 803 to deform and change its configuration to match 802. In the new configuration 804, it is integrated with 802 such that the actuation force from 804 is also transferred and coupled to 802. Across the actuation process, the same electromagnetic field generator source can be used for the actuation and the radio-frequency heating. The different possible attachment configurations of 804 to 802 and the different modes of 604 allow a large space of reconfigurability between 802 and 804.

[0047] Figure 9 shows the physical embodiment of the attach and actuate principle for reconfigurations at the actuator structure interface. The actuators 901 are interfaced with the origami structure 902. External electromagnetic fields control 901 reaches the target location 903. The elastomer-fluid transition magnetic materials 1 can be induced to undergo phase change 904 to adhere and conform to the desired target structure. This location allows the translational motions of actuators 901 to couple with the rotational motions in the origami structure 902. Specific to this embodiment of the origami structure 902, the Sarrus structure is rectified, and the elastomer-fluid transition magnetic materials 1 undergoes a second phase change to anchor and attach the Sarrus configuration 905. With the Sarrus structure rectified, the hidden Remote Center of Motion (RCM) can then be attached to and actuated 906. Depending on the actuation needs, both attachment sites 907 and 908 for the elastomer-fluid transition magnetic materials 1 can be used to drive the end effector tip 909.

[0048] Figure 10 shows the potential applications and extensions of the attach and actuate principle. The Sarrus-RCM structure 1001 can be reconfigured from the constituent actuators and structures to dexterously interact with object 1002 on-demand and under constraints from a confined environment. Depending on the type of structure, a different embodiment 1003 could be such that an assembly is first performed to construct the functional structure before performing its task. 1003 demonstrates the case where an aerofoil shaped elastomer-fluid transition magnetic materials 1 imparts rotational motion to fold and construct the origami assembly, as part of the attach and actuate paradigm. Upon completing assembly 1004, the new function can be achieved, which, in this case, for the origami wheel, is a rolling motion, where the translation forces of the elastomer-fluid transition magnetic materials 1 are coupled for rotational locomotion. This highlights a case of reconfiguring the actuator and structure interface to achieve new constructions and functions.

[0049] Figure 11 illustrates a different embodiment of the reconfigurations at the actuator structure interface. The phase change properties of the elastomer-fluid transition magnetic materials 1 enable it to function as an additional constraint 1104, which can couple with the structural constraints of the origami mechanism 1102. The transient release of constraints acts like on-demand kirigami cuts 1103, which can enable new functions. The actuation of the elastomer-fluid transition magnetic materials 1 could also be coupled with other actuation sources, such as a simple permanent magnet 1101. The overall expression of such a reconfigurable interface allows the structure to function with a predetermined range of 1105 until the elastomer-fluid transition magnetic materials 1 is removed, and the range of motions can be extended 1106. This highlights the ability of transient constraint release to reconfigure structures at the actuator structure interface.

[0050] Figure 12 demonstrates the transient constraint release in a different structural configuration 1201 that is a rotating parallelogram which has a predetermined range of motion. The constraint 1202 inhibits internal deformation during actuation, which limits the range of motion, but is better at force coupling and load-bearing tasks. When the constraint is removed 1203, the parallelogram can be deformed to enable a larger range of motion at the trade-off of having less load-bearing function. The motions range for points A and B are larger when the elastomer-fluid transition magnetic materials 1 is in the off state. The constrained parallelogram 1205 allows the structure to bear the load from obstacles such as 1204, but the limited range of motion could be a limitation when the openings are narrow, such as from obstacles 1204. When encountering such a case, the constraints can be switched off transiently 1206, allowing the structure to traverse the narrowing, and the constraints could be reconfigured later when the loading functions are required. The elastomer-fluid transition magnetic materials 1 interfacing with the origami structure as a transient constraint is a useful approach to achieve a different type of reconfiguration at the interface between the actuator and structure.

[0051] Figure 13 embodies the reconfiguration at the interface of a two-rotational hinge structure (2RH) . The structure comprises soft magnetic components 1301, which could have other phase-change properties. 1 is attached to reconfigurable ledge 1302 in the structure. Permanent magnetic components 1303 are used in conjunction with the 1301 component to generate differential motions, allowing for internal deformations. Depending on the external electromagnetic field control, the structure can be controlled for locomotion-orientation and with phase change 1305 at the specific hinges 1304 to allow reconfiguration, the entire structure can reconfigure to take on a new configuration for a new function. One example would be having a linear configuration 1306 where the small cross-section is useful to navigate narrow passages, and with reconfiguration 1307 at the interface, a new L mode configuration 1308 could perform other functional tasks, such as where a functional surface is now exposed for needle delivery.

[0052] Figure 14 depicts various potential applications involving the reconfiguration capabilities of the two rotational hinge structure (2RH) . The first concept in the figure illustrates the reconfiguration for obstacle avoidance 1401, which can be achieved through linear, L mode, or simple compliant hinge configurations. Depending on the specific requirements of the environment, the structure can adapt and assume a wide range of configurations to perform the desired tasks effectively. Additionally, the 2RH can be combined with other components, such as a reconfigurable ramp 1402, to provide reaction force support for different height or angle requirements during the reconfiguration process. Moreover, the reconfiguration capabilities of the 2RH can be employed for the protection and deployment of functional surfaces, as exemplified by the needle deployment scenario 1403. In this particular application, the structure remains in a reconfigured state until it reaches the target site, at which point it reconfigures to expose the needles for functional purposes 1004.

[0053] Figure 15 shows the operation process of the elastomer-fluid transition materials-aided surgical tools 15 for submucosal dissections. The elastomer-fluid transition materials-aided surgical tools 15 include the thermal ablation unit (comprising a meltable tip 1501 and a non-responsive body 1502) and an electrosurgical unit (comprising a responsive supporting continuum 1503 and an electrosurgical unit 1504) . The thermal ablation unit first approaches the dissection region and melt 1501 by activating the RF field. During the fluid state, 1501 heats (to kill) the dissection region and vaporize the mucous membrane to attach firmly with each other. After heating, by dragging 1502, the submucosal dissection target can be pulled up. Afterwards, the electrosurgical unit 1504 approaches to cut the target. 1503, during the cutting, plays a role of direction adjustments by responding to external magnetic fields.

[0054] Detailed description / discussion

[0055] As addressed in the above sections, the reconfigurability at the actuator structure interface allows a different paradigm for reconfigurable mechanisms and allows designers a different approach to achieving complex tasks in confined spaces. The objective of this invention disclosure is to promote the reconfiguration of the actuator and structure interface. Where the actuator features phase transition for mechanical tuning with magnetic actuation, and the origami structure highlights the structural means to control and coupling of actuations to allow for embodied physical intelligence. The fluidity of the reversible elastomer-fluid phase transition materials during the phase change state allows for a large configuration space but the control of extreme compliance is usually difficult. Utilizing the structural constraints, the difficulty in controlling can be minimized. The compliance and flexibility of actuator attachment sites and configuration supplement the origami structure with a large workspace. The two components benefit each other, which enhances adaptability to environmental needs and provides the designer with a large space for customizability. The concept is that both the actuator and the structure are capable of their own independent reconfigurable workspaces, but with their mutual interactions at the interface, the reconfigurations can be utilized for unique functions. Another highlight of this approach of reconfiguration is that the components can be made to be recyclable or multifunctional. Similar to the concept of modularity or compliant mechanisms, where components can have interchangeable or multiple configurations, the material-origami approach demonstrates that it is capable of a similar reduction of redundant components via reconfigurations.

[0056] Unlike modular systems where the actuator is fixed to pre-defined attachment locations, the fluidity of the reversible elastomer-fluid phase transition materials and the flexibility in choosing the attachment site allows for a larger space of reconfiguration. The modular and compliant mechanism approaches could also be integrated into the origami structure for functions together with the actuators. Overall, the considerations for reconfigurations of the actuator structure interface should enhance the efficacy of component part use. Other types of actuation modes, such as shape memory or soft fluidic actuators mentioned above, could also be considered, but the use of the reversible elastomer-fluid phase transition materials appears to provide the best trade-off between controllability and flexibility. Shape memory devices lack the fluidity to achieve a large configuration space, while the fluidic actuation lacks the inherent structural integrity for loading and control and would require structural support. The ability to phase shift between different functional states endows the reversible elastomer-fluid phase transition materials with the ability to reconfigure and select the optimal configuration and properties. The combination of reconfigurable actuators and structures allows the mechanism to optimize the ideal compliance, loading response, and configuration to the required task. As the predominant description for actuation is magnetic, the actuation is also tetherless, which brings benefits to achieving a task in confined spaces where transmitting a control signal via a physical connection can be challenging. The combination of these benefits means that the reconfiguration of the actuator-structure interface disclosed here can achieve on-site assembly, allowing it to adapt to complex or dynamic environmental conditions.

[0057] One embodiment is described here for illustration. The mechanism has three aspects: the actuator, the structure, and the interface between said actuator and the structure. The actuator will have a combination of at least two of the following properties: interaction with electromagnetic fields to deform and displace; interaction with electromagnetic fields to generate heat; a phase change in mechanical properties, modulating different strain responses under applied stress; controllable adhesiveness properties; tunable mechanical properties such as viscosity and elasticity. The structure will have a combination of at least two of the following properties: Having multiple configurations; can be actuated by an attached actuator; can be reconfigured by external force from attached actuators. The interface between actuators and structure can reconfigure through at least one of the following schemas: reconfiguration and actuation, where the actuator and structure are initially spatially separate, but the union allows the mechanical interaction to reconfigure, and the constraints from the structure enhance control over the actuation; reconfiguration and actuation, where the actuator and structure are initially spatially connected, and reconfigurations in the actuator change the constraints and motions in the structure; new functions can arise from the reconfiguration of the components, or the new functions can be generated via interaction with external or environmental components. Further modification to the claimed mechanism can be done to enhance its functionalities. Additional components, such as additional mechanical attachments that modify the mechanical contact properties, additional electronics components that promote radio frequency interaction, or additional components for modulating biochemical interaction with the environment. One approach to fabricating the reconfigurable mechanism is described, and the claims extend to other similar processes and are not limited to the methods disclosed here.

[0058] The reversible elastomer-fluid phase transition materials comprise thermoplastics as the basic material, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) , and functional additives. Specifically, the commercially available hot melt adhesive (1 mm-particle-type) , ethylene-vinyl acetate, and polycaprolactone are combined in a predetermined composition. The magnetite powder (48 micrometers) and neodymium magnet powder (5–25 micrometers) are applied to respond to RF and external magnetic control stimuli, respectively. Graphene powder and wax are selectively applied to improve thermal effects and fluidity, respectively. All material particulates are weighted, settled in the petri dish, and put on a hot plate. Below 200 ℃, thermoplastic powders melt into fluids and are fully mixed by stirring them with the additive material powders. After 5 minutes of mixing, the reversible elastomer-fluid phase transition materials can be obtained by cooling for 5 minutes. According to specific geometry requirements, the reversible elastomer-fluid phase transition materials can be melted and poured into 3D-printed molds for further geometry shaping. Fabricating the origami structure is done with existing commercially available computer-aided design tools for the design phase, and the generated crease pattern is creased and cut with either CNC tooling attached to a penknife or laser cutter. The paper materials tested include 80 gsm A4 paper, 1 mm cardstock, 0.25 mm cardstock paper, and baking tray paper. Paper craft glue and catalyst-cured silicone (ecoflex 00-30) are used as the adhesive or at hinge joints. Conductive traces can be achieved with conductive paints (silver soldering paste) . The combination between the actuator and structure is achieved by manual assembly, where the reversible elastomer-fluid phase transition materials are directly bonded to the structural surfaces via phase change or with additional adhesives.
