[0031] Following below are more detailed descriptions of various concepts related to, and implementations of systems and methods for controlling a multi-engine system. Before turning  to the figures, which illustrate certain exemplary embodiments in detail, it should be understood that the present disclosure is not limited to the details or methodology set forth in the description or illustrated in the figures. It should also be understood that the terminology used herein is for the purpose of description only and should not be regarded as limiting.

[0032] According to various example embodiments, the systems and methods disclosed herein relate to a power generation system. The power generation system can be or can include a multi-engine system. The multi-engine system can be a multi-engine system for various applications (e.g., a powertrain, a vehicle) . The multi-engine system can provide adequate aggregate power (e.g., power from various engines) to accommodate the highest power demand of the application. The engines of the multi-engine system can be, for example, internal combustion engines. The engines can operate using various fuels, including but not limited to diesel. In some embodiments, the engines can operate on a combination of fuels. For example, the engines may be dual fuel engine systems. The dual fuel engine system can be configured to be an engine having a dual fuel operation mode. The engine can be configured to operate using two different fuels. The engine can be configured to operate using a first fuel and a second fuel, where the first fuel and the second fuel have different properties and / or chemical compositions. The properties can include auto-ignition temperatures, flame speeds, etc. The fuels can include diesel and natural gas, for example. For example, the first fuel can be a diesel fuel. The second fuel can be, for example, natural gas, an e-fuel or liquid biofuel. The liquid biofuel can be methanol and / or ethanol, for example. The first fuel or the second fuel can be any one of a high cetane number fuel, such as diesel, gas-to-liquid (GTL) diesel, heavy fuel oil (HFO) , low sulfur fuel oil (LFSO) , hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) , marine gas oil (MGO) , renewable diesel, biodiesel, paraffinic diesel, dimethyl ether (DME) , F-76 fuel, F-34 fuel, jet A fuel, JP-4 fuel, JP-8 fuel, or oxymethylene ether (OME) , or a low cetane number fuel (e.g., a high octane number fuel, a high methane number fuel) . The low cetane number fuel can be natural gas, hydrogen, ethane, propane, butane, syngas, ammonia, methanol, ethanol, or gasoline. The first fuel and / or the second fuel can optionally be a blend of fuels. It should be appreciated that the foregoing are merely examples of fuels, and other types of first and second fuels are not precluded.

[0033] The individual engines of the multi-engine system can have lower power ratings (e.g., lower power output capacities) than a single engine to power the same powertrain. During operation, the engines of the multi-engine system can operate at power levels that improve the efficiency of the engines. For example, while a single, larger engine may operate at 45%capacity during normal operation, which can cause low engine efficiency, two smaller engines may operate at 75%capacity, which can cause higher engine efficiency. The overall power rating of the multiple engines can be selected to accommodate an estimated maximum power demand and increase engine efficiency.

[0034] The multi-engine system includes two engine systems to provide power and at least one controller to control the engine systems. Each engine system includes at least one engine. The engine includes or is coupled to a power controller and a power sensor. The engines of the two engine systems can be coupled in series via a mechanical coupling. The controller can control power output and speed of the engines. For example, the controller can receive an input indicative of a power demand for a power generation system. The controller can generate and transmit a signal to each engine system based on the input received. The signals can cause the engines to operate at certain states such that the engine systems operate at desired loading conditions. The controller can transmit signals to the power controllers to adjust the operations of the engines to adjust to the power output by the engines and adjust the speed of the engines. For example, the signal transmitted to the power controllers can be based on of the power output by the engines. For example, the power sensors of each engine system can detect a power output of each engine and transmit a signal to the controller indicating the detected power output of each engine. The controller can transmit signals to the power controllers based on the received signal. Based on the signals received, the power controllers can adjust the operation of the engines (e.g., the power controllers can cause more or less fuel to be provided to the engines) to make the power output of both engines the same, or substantially the same.

[0062] In some embodiments, each engine system 115 of the multi-engine system 110 can include at least one actuator 215 to perform the functions described herein. For example, a first engine system 115 can include a first actuator 215 configured to adjust the operation of the first engine 120 based on a speed detected by the speed sensor 235. A second engine system 115 can include a second actuator 215 configured to adjust the operation of the second engine 120 based on the speed detected by the speed sensor 235.

[0063] In some embodiments, the controller 225 can be configured to detect a fault of the multi-engine system 110. For example, the controller 225 can be communicably coupled with the speed sensor 235. The controller 225 can be configured to receive a speed signal from the speed  sensor 235. The speed signal can be indicative of an engine speed. The engine speed can be the speed of both the first engine 120 and the second engine 120 of the multi-engine system 110.

[0064] The controller 225 can be configured to compare the engine speed with a speed threshold. The speed threshold can be based on an operation characteristic. For example, the operation characteristic can be, but is not limited to, a power demand of the system, a power output of the engine 120, or a maximum speed for the engine 120, among others. The speed threshold can be based on the specific operation characteristic of the engine system 115. Responsive to determining that the engine speed exceeds the speed threshold, the controller 225 can be configured to determine the presence of a fault within the multi-engine system 110.

[0065] Responsive to determining the presence of a fault, the controller 225 can be configured to at least one of cease operation of the multi-engine system, cease operation of one of the engine systems 115 of the multi-engine system 110, or transmit a notification indicating the fault. For example, responsive to detecting the fault, the controller 225 can cease operation of the entire multi-engine system 110. In some embodiments, with a clutch 127, the controller 225 can determine which engine 120 or engine system 115 is associated with the fault, and cease operation of such engine 120 or engine system 115 while maintaining operation of the other engine 120 or engine system 115.

[0066] The notification can be or include an audio or visual indication or an audiovisual indication combining both audio and visual information. For example, the notification can be a sound (e.g., a beep or a siren) or a visual indicator (e.g., a light or a message sent to a user device) . For example, the notification can be provided to a user via a user device (e.g., a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or other computing system) . The user device can provide the notification to a user via a message or indication on a screen of the user device. The notification can be a general notification indicative of the presence of a fault, or the notification can be a more specific notification that includes details of the fault. For example, the more specific notification can indicate at least one of a component that is at fault, what the fault is, or how to fix the fault, among other information associated with the fault.

[0070] The memory 315 (e.g., memory unit and / or storage device) can include one or more devices (e.g., RAM, ROM, Flash memory, hard disk storage) for storing data and / or computer code for completing or facilitating the various processes, layers and modules described in the present disclosure. The memory 315 can be communicably connected to the processor 310 to provide computer code or instructions to the processor 310 for executing at least some of the processes described herein. Moreover, the memory 315 can be or include tangible, non-transient volatile memory or non-volatile memory. Accordingly, the memory 315 can include database components, object code components, script components, or any other type of information structure for supporting the various activities and information structures described herein.

[0071] In some embodiments, the power demand circuit 320, the power output circuit 325, and the speed circuit 330 can be embodied or implemented as machine-executable instructions that are stored in the memory 315 (or other memory or storage device) and executed by the processor 310. The power demand circuit 320, the power output circuit 325, and the speed circuit 330 can be embodied or implemented as machine or computer-readable media storing instructions that are executable by the processor 310. As described herein and amongst other uses, the machine-readable media facilitates performance of certain operations to enable reception, analysis, and transmission of data. For example, the machine-readable media may provide an instruction (e.g., command, etc. ) to, e.g., acquire data. In this regard, the machine-readable media may include  programmable logic that defines the frequency of acquisition of the data (or, transmission of the data) . The computer readable media instructions may include code, which may be written in any programming language including, but not limited to, Java or the like and any conventional procedural programming languages, such as the "C" programming language or similar programming languages. The computer readable program code may be executed on one processor or multiple remote processors. In the latter scenario, the remote processors may be connected to each other through any type of network (e.g., CAN bus, etc. ) .

[0072] In some implementations, the power demand circuit 320, the power output circuit 325, and the speed circuit 330 can be embodied as hardware units, such as electronic control units. As such, the power demand circuit 320, the power output circuit 325, and the speed circuit 330 can be embodied as one or more circuitry components including, but not limited to, processing circuitry, network interfaces and / or other circuitry components. In some implementations, the power demand circuit 320, the power output circuit 325, and the speed circuit 330 can take the form of one or more analog circuits, electronic circuits (e.g., integrated circuits (IC) , discrete circuits, system on a chip (SOCs) circuits, microcontrollers, etc. ) , telecommunication circuits, hybrid circuits, and any other type of “circuit. ” In this regard, the power demand circuit 320, the power output circuit 325, and the speed circuit 330 can include any type of component for accomplishing or facilitating achievement of the operations described herein. For example, a circuit as described herein may include one or more transistors, logic gates (e.g., NAND, AND, NOR, OR, XOR, NOT, XNOR, etc. ) , resistors, multiplexers, registers, capacitors, inductors, diodes, wiring, and so on) . The power demand circuit 320, the power output circuit 325, and the speed circuit 330 can include programmable hardware devices such as field programmable gate arrays, programmable array logic, programmable logic devices or the like. The power demand circuit 320, the power output circuit 325, and the speed circuit 330 can include one or more memory devices for storing instructions that are executable by one or more processor (s) of these circuits. In some hardware unit configurations, the power demand circuit 320, the power output circuit 325, and the speed circuit 330 can be dispersed throughout separate locations in the  system 100. In some implementations, the power demand circuit 320, the power output circuit 325, and the speed circuit 330 can be embodied in or within a single unit / housing.

[0073] The controller 225 stores executable instructions in the memory 315 that, when executed by a processor 310, can cause the processor to perform any of the functions described herein. For example, the instructions cause the processor 310 to receive an input signal. The input signal indicates a power demand of a system 100. The system 100 includes a multi-engine system 110. For example, the power demand circuit 320 can receive the input signal.

[0074] The instructions cause the processor 310 to transmit a first control command to a first engine system 115 of the multi-engine system 110 and a second control command to a second engine system 115 of the multi-engine system 110. The first control command and the second control command are based on the power demand. The first control command activates a first engine 120 of the first engine system 115. The second control command activates a second engine 120 of the second engine system 115. The power demand circuit 320 can, for example, transmit the first and second control commands.

[0075] The instructions cause the processor 310 to receive a first signal indicating a first power output of the first engine 120 and receive a second signal indicating a second power output of the second engine 120. The first power output can be different than the second power output. The power output circuit 325 can, for example, be configured to receive the first signal indicating the first power output and receive the second signal indicating the second power output.

[0076] The instructions cause the processor 310 to adjust an operation of at least one of the first engine 120 or the second engine 120 to cause the first power output to correspond with the second power output. For example, the adjusted operation of the first or second engines 120 can cause the first power output to match or be approximately equivalent to (e.g., within 1%, 5%, or 10%) the second power output. The power output circuit 325 can, for example, be configured to adjust the operation of at least one of the first engine 120 via the first power controller 205 or the second engine 120 via the second power controller 205.

[0077] In some embodiments, the instructions can cause the processor 310 to receive a speed signal indicating an engine speed. The engine speed can correspond to a first engine 120 and a second engine 120 of the multi-engine system 110. The speed circuit 330 can, for example, be configured to receive the speed signal. The instructions can cause the processor 310 to compare the engine speed with a target engine speed. The speed circuit 330 can, for example, be configured to compare the engine speed with the target engine speed. The instructions can cause the processor 310 to determine the engine speed is different than the target speed. The speed circuit 330 can, for example, be configured to determine the engine speed is different than the target speed. The instructions can cause the processor 310 to adjust an operation of at least one of the first engine 120 via the first power controller 205 or the second engine 120 via the the second power controller 205 to cause the engine speed to correspond with the target speed. For example, the adjusted operation of the first or second engines 120 can cause the engine speed to match or be approximately equivalent to (e.g., within 1%, 5%, or 10%) the target speed. The speed circuit 330 can, for example, be configured to adjust the operation of at least one of the first engine 120 via the first power controller 205 or the second engine 120 via the second power controller 205 such that the engine speed corresponds with the target speed. For example, the adjusted operation of the first or second engine 120 can cause the engine speed to match or be approximately equivalent to (e.g., within 1%, 5%, or 10%) the target speed.

[0078] In some embodiments, the instructions can cause the processor 310 to identify the first engine system 115 as the control engine system 115. The power output circuit 325 can, for example, be configured to identify the first engine system 115 as the control engine system 115. The instructions can cause the processor 310 to adjust the operation of the second engine 120 via the second power controller 205 to cause the second power output to correspond with the first power output of the control engine system 115. For example, the adjusted operation of the second engine 120 can cause the second power output to match or be approximately equivalent to (e.g., within 1%, 5%, 10%) the first power output. The power output circuit 325 can, for example, be configured to adjust the operation of the second engine to cause the second power output to correspond with the first power output of the control engine system 115.

[0079] Referring to FIG. 4, a flow diagram of a method 400 for controlling a multi-engine system 110 of a system 100 is shown, according to an example embodiment. Method 400 includes receiving, by one or more processors 310, an input signal indicating a power demand of the system 100 (Step 405) . For example, the power demand circuit 320 can receive the input signal from an input device 230 of the system 100.

[0080] Method 400 includes transmitting, by the one or more processors 310, a first control command to a first engine system 115 of the multi-engine system 110 and a second control command to a second engine system 115 of the multi-engine system 110 (Step 410) . For example, the power demand circuit 320 can transmit the first control command to the first engine system 115 and the second control command to the second engine system 115. The first control command and the second control command are based on the power demand of the system 100. The first control command is configured to cause a first power controller 205 to activate a first engine 120 of the first engine system 115. The second control command is configured to cause a second power controller 205 to activate a second engine 120 of the second engine system 115.

[0081] In some embodiments, the first engine 120 can be coupled in series with the second engine 120. In some embodiments, the multi-engine system 110 can include a clutch 127. The clutch 127 can selectively mechanically couple the first engine 120 with the second engine 120 such that the engines 120 can operate together or independent of each other.

[0082] Method 400 includes monitoring, by the one or more processors 310, a first power output of the first engine 120 and a second power output of the second engine 120 (step 415) . For example, the power output circuit 325 can monitor the first power output and the second power output. Monitoring the first power output and the second power output can include receiving a first signal from a first power sensor 220 indicating the first power output and receiving a second signal from a second power sensor 220 indicting the second power output.

[0083] The one or more processors 310 can be configured to compare the first power output and the second power output. For example, the power output circuit 325 can compare the first power  output and the second power output. Comparing the first power output and the second power output can include comparing the power outputs to each other or comparing the power outputs with a power threshold, among others. For example, in some embodiments, the one or more processors 310 can compare the first power output with the second power output and determine a difference between the first power output and the second power output. In some embodiments, the one or more processors 310 can compare the first power output and the second power output with a power threshold and determine at least one of the first power output or the second power output is different than the power threshold. In some embodiments, the one or more processors can combine the first power output and the second power output to determine an average power output.

[0084] Method 400 includes adjusting, by the one or more processors 310, an operation of at least one of the first engine 120 via the first power controller 205 or the second engine 120 via the second power controller 205 based on the first power output and the second power output (Step 420) . For example, the power output circuit 325 can cause at least one of the first power controller 205 to adjust the operation of the first engine 120 or the second power controller 205 to adjust the operation of the second engine 120 to cause the first power output to match or be approximately equivalent to (e.g., within 1%, 5%, or 10%) the second power output.

[0085] In some embodiments, the operation of the first power controller 205 or the second power controller 205 is based on a difference between the first power output and the second power output to cause the first power output to match or be approximately equivalent to the second power output. In some embodiments, the one or more processors 310 can identify the first engine system 115 as a control engine system 115 and adjust the operation of the second engine 120 to cause the second power output to correspond with the first power output of the control engine system 115. In some embodiments, the one or more processors 310 adjust the operation of at least one of the first engine 120 or the second engine 120 to cause the first power output and the second power output to correspond with a power threshold. For example, the adjusted operation of the first engine 120 and the second engine 120 can cause the first power output and second power output to match or be approximately equivalent to (e.g., within 1%, 5%, 10%) the power  threshold. In some embodiments, the one or more processors 310 adjust the operation of the first engien120 via the first power controller 205 and the second engine 120 via the second power controller 205 to cause the first power output and the second power output to equal an average power output.

[0086] In some embodiments, method 400 can include receiving, by one or more processors 310, a speed signal from a speed sensor. The speed signal can indicate an engine speed. The engine speed can correspond to the first engine and the second engine. The one or more processors 310 can compare the engine speed with a target engine speed and determine the engine speed is different than the target speed. The one or more processors 310 can adjust the operation of at least one of the first engine 120 or the second engine 120 to cause the engine speed to correspond with the target speed. For example, the adjusted operation of the first engine 120 or the second engine 120 can cause the engine speed to match or be approximately equivalent to (e.g., within 1%, 5%, 10%) the target speed.

[0087] In some embodiments, method 400 can include receiving, by the one or more processors 310, a speed signal from the speed sensor indicative of the speed of the first engine and the second engine. The one or more processors 310 can compare the speed of the first engine and the second engine with a speed threshold. The speed threshold can be based on an operation characteristic. The one or more processors 310 can, responsive to determining the speed of the first engine and the second engine exceeds the threshold, determine the presence of a fault within the multi-engine system. The one or more processors 310 can, responsive to the determining the presence of the fault, at least one of ceasing operation of the multi-engine system, ceasing operation of at least one engine system 115, or transmitting a notification to a user device indicating the fault.

[0088] As utilized herein, the terms “approximately, ” “about, ” “substantially” , and similar terms are intended to have a broad meaning in harmony with the common and accepted usage by those of ordinary skill in the art to which the subject matter of this disclosure pertains. It should be understood by those of skill in the art who review this disclosure that these terms are intended to  allow a description of certain features described and claimed without restricting the scope of these features to the precise numerical ranges provided. Accordingly, these terms should be interpreted as indicating that insubstantial or inconsequential modifications or alterations of the subject matter described and claimed are considered to be within the scope of the disclosure as recited in the appended claims.

[0089] It should be noted that the term “exemplary” and variations thereof, as used herein to describe various embodiments, are intended to indicate that such embodiments are possible examples, representations, or illustrations of possible embodiments (and such terms are not intended to connote that such embodiments are necessarily extraordinary or superlative examples) .

[0090] The term “coupled” and variations thereof, as used herein, means the joining of two members directly or indirectly to one another. Such joining may be stationary (e.g., permanent or fixed) or moveable (e.g., removable or releasable) . Such joining may be achieved with the two members coupled directly to each other, with the two members coupled to each other using one or more separate intervening members, or with the two members coupled to each other using an intervening member that is integrally formed as a single unitary body with one of the two members. If “coupled” or variations thereof are modified by an additional term (e.g., directly coupled) , the generic definition of “coupled” provided above is modified by the plain language meaning of the additional term (e.g., “directly coupled” means the joining of two members without any separate intervening member) , resulting in a narrower definition than the generic definition of “coupled” provided above. Such coupling may be mechanical and / or electrical, for example.

[0091] References herein to the positions of elements (e.g., “top, ” “bottom, ” “above, ” “below” ) are merely used to describe the orientation of various elements in the FIGURES. It should be noted that the orientation of various elements may differ according to other exemplary embodiments, and that such variations are intended to be encompassed by the present disclosure.

[0092] While various circuits with particular functionality are shown in FIG. 3, it should be understood that the controller 225 may include any number of circuits for completing the functions described herein. For example, the activities and functionalities of the power demand circuit 320, the power output circuit 325, and the speed circuit 330 can be combined in multiple circuits or as a single circuit. Additional circuits with additional functionality may also be included. Further, the controller 225 can control other activity beyond the scope of the present disclosure.

[0093] As mentioned above and in one configuration, the “circuits” may be implemented in machine-readable medium for execution by various types of processors, such as the processor 310 of FIG. 3. Executable code may, for instance, comprise one or more physical or logical blocks of computer instructions, which may, for instance, be organized as an object, procedure, or function. Nevertheless, the executables need not be physically located together, but may comprise disparate instructions stored in different locations which, when joined logically together, comprise the circuit and achieve the stated purpose for the circuit. Indeed, a circuit of computer readable program code may be a single instruction, or many instructions, and may even be distributed over several different code segments, among different programs, and across several memory devices. Similarly, operational data may be identified and illustrated herein within circuits, and may be embodied in any suitable form and organized within any suitable type of data structure. The operational data may be collected as a single data set, or may be distributed over different locations including over different storage devices, and may exist, at least partially, merely as electronic signals on a system or network.

[0094] While the term “processor” is discussed above, the term “processor” and “processing circuit” are meant to be broadly interpreted. In this regard and as mentioned above, the “processor” may be implemented as one or more processors, application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) , field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) , digital signal processors (DSPs) , or other suitable electronic data processing components structured to execute instructions provided by memory. The one or more processors may take the form of a single core processor, multi-core processor (e.g., a dual core processor, triple core processor, quad core processor, etc. ) ,  microprocessor, etc. In some embodiments, the one or more processors may be external to the controller 225, for example the one or more processors may be a remote processor (e.g., a cloud-based processor) . Alternatively or additionally, the one or more processors may be internal and / or local to the controller 225. In this regard, a given circuit or components thereof may be disposed locally (e.g., as part of a local server, a local computing system, etc. ) or remotely (e.g., as part of a remote server such as a cloud-based server) . To that end, a “circuit” as described herein may include components that are distributed across one or more locations.

[0095] Although the figures and description may illustrate a specific order of method steps, the order of such steps may differ from what is depicted and described, unless specified differently above. Also, two or more steps may be performed concurrently or with partial concurrence, unless specified differently above. All such variations are within the scope of the disclosure.

[0096] It is important to note that the construction and arrangement of the multi-engine system 110, and components thereof, as shown in the various exemplary embodiments is illustrative only. Additionally, any element disclosed in one embodiment may be incorporated or utilized with any other embodiment disclosed herein. Although only one example of an element from one embodiment that can be incorporated or utilized in another embodiment has been described above, it should be appreciated that other elements of the various embodiments may be incorporated or utilized with any of the other embodiments disclosed herein.
