AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current wireless communication systems face high report overhead and latency in beam information reporting due to periodic or semi-persistent channel state information (CSI) reports, which are not triggered by specific events, leading to unnecessary data transmission and inefficient resource utilization.

Method used

Implementing a method where user equipment (UE) generates uplink control information (UCI) bits for beam reports only when triggered by specific events, reducing report overhead and latency by allowing UE to determine when to transmit beam information without downlink control information (DCI) activation, and utilizing flexible uplink resources for UCI transmission.

Benefits of technology

This approach reduces report overhead and latency by enabling event-triggered beam reporting, optimizing resource utilization and improving communication efficiency in wireless systems.

[0001] This document is directed generally to digital wireless communications.BACKGROUND

[0002] Mobile telecommunication technologies are moving the world toward an increasingly connected and networked society. In comparison with the existing wireless networks, next generation systems and wireless communication techniques will need to support a much wider range of use-case characteristics and provide a more complex and sophisticated range of access requirements and flexibilities.

[0003] Long-Term Evolution (LTE) is a standard for wireless communication for mobile devices and data terminals developed by 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) . LTE Advanced (LTE-A) is a wireless communication standard that enhances the LTE standard. The 5th generation of wireless system, known as 5G, advances the LTE and LTE-A wireless standards and is committed to supporting higher data-rates, large number of connections, ultra-low latency, high reliability and other emerging business needs.SUMMARY

[0004] Techniques are disclosed for generating and / or transmitting / receiving uplink control information (UCI) in a beam report that is triggered by a trigger event. For instance, a set of UCI bits are defined or described for a beam report, or two parts of UCI bits are defined or described for a beam report, or a set of UCI bits are described or defined for a number of beam reports. A user equipment (UE) may transmit the UCI bits in uplink resources.

[0005] An example wireless communication method includes receiving, by a communication device, a configuration related to one or more beam reports, where the configuration indicates or enables the communication device to transmit one or more beam reports in response to one or more trigger events indicated in the configuration, where each beam report is associated with at least one trigger event, and where each beam report is associated with at least one reference signal; and transmitting, by the communication device, uplink control information (UCI) associated with a beam report in response to an occurrence of a trigger event associated with the beam report.

[0032] Currently, beam information report is based on channel state information (CSI) report, and a report type of the beam information report in time domain behavior can be configured to be periodic, semi-persistent or aperiodic. In such methods, a user equipment (UE) can report all the information associated with the reference signals configured for CSI report, which results in a large report overhead. Meanwhile, report latency for CSI report can be large as well, especially for semi-persistent and periodical CSI report because the UE performs CSI report based on the report period rather than a flexible report timing.

[0033] This patent document specifies methods of beam information report that may be triggered by events. For example, in some embodiments, a UE may be enabled to report a beam information when the UE determines that a configured event occurs, where the event may be configured by a base station. In such a method, the report overhead is reduced as UE does not need to report information of all the configured reference signals. In some embodiments, UE may be allowed to perform beam report when the UE determines that an event is triggered and without a downlink control information (DCI) activating a report so that report latency may be reduced as well. This patent document describes at least the following two techniques: (1) generation of uplink control information (UCI) bits related to a beam information report; and (2) an uplink resource determination for the UCI bits related to the beam information report.

[0034] The example headings for the various sections below are used to facilitate the understanding of the disclosed subject matter and do not limit the scope of the claimed subject matter in any way. Accordingly, one or more features of one example section can be combined with one or more features of another example section. Furthermore, 5G terminology is used for the sake of clarity of explanation, but the techniques disclosed in the present document are not limited to 5G technology only and may be used in wireless systems that implemented other protocols.

[0035] I. Introduction

[0036] Channel state information (CSI) report in the current new radio (NR) system can assist the network to provide a better transmission configuration to a UE. A CSI report can be configured to be aperiodic, semi-persistent or periodic.

[0037] For aperiodic CSI report triggering, a single set of CSI triggering states are higher layer configured. UE can receive a DCI format to activate a CSI trigger state or a CSI reporting.

[0038] For semi-persistent CSI reporting on PUSCH, a set of trigger states are configured by higher layer, where the CSI request field in DCI scrambled with SP-CSI-RNTI (radio network temporary identifier) activates one of the trigger states.

[0039] For semi-persistent reporting on PUCCH, the PUCCH resource used for transmitting the CSI report are configured by RRC signaling. Semi-persistent reporting on PUCCH is activated by an activation command which selects one of the semi-persistent Reporting Settings for use by the UE on the PUCCH.

[0040] For periodic CSI reporting, the report periodicity, slot offset and PUCCH resource for the report are configured.

[0041] A UE can be configured the report quantity for a CSI Report to contain one or more of Channel quality indicator (CQI) , Precoding matrix indicator (PMI) , rank indicator (RI) , CSI-RS Resource Indicator (CRI) , synchronization signal block resource indicator (SSBRI) , signal-to-noise and interference ratio (SINR) , or reference signal received power (RSRP) . UE calculates the corresponding CSI parameter based on the configured report quantity and corresponding CSI resources for measurement.

[0042] Measurement reporting is to transfer measurement results from the UE to the network. The UE shall initiate measurement reporting only after successful Access Stratum (AS) security activation. The measurement reporting is performed by higher layers of UE, and a plurality of measurement report triggering events can be configured for a report configuration. The triggering events are mainly related to higher layer parameters, e.g., serving cell or neighboring cell measurement result, interference measurement result, channel busy ratio, or UE location. Signaling radio bearer of the measurement report is SRB1 and SRB3, and the logical channel is Dedicated Control Channel (DCCH) .

[0043] The Scheduling Request (SR) is used for requesting UL-SCH resources for new transmission. The MAC entity may be configured with zero, one, or more SR configurations. An SR configuration consists of a set of PUCCH resources for SR across different BWPs and cells. The SR configuration of the logical channel that triggered a Buffer Status Reporting or the SCell beam failure recovery or the beam failure recovery of BFD-RS set or the consistent LBT (listen before talk) failure recovery or positioning measurement gap activation / deactivation request is considered as corresponding SR configuration for the triggered SR.

[0044] Uplink control information (UCI) types include HARQ-ACK information, scheduling request (SR) , link recovery request (LRR) , and CSI. UCI bits include HARQ-ACK information bits, if any, SR information bits, if any, LRR information bit, if any, and  CSI bits, if any. Normally SR is applicable for SR and / or for LRR in NR systems. In this document, the terms UCI and UCI bits are generally used interchangeably.

[0045] II. Example Embodiments

[0046] In this patent document, a beam report can be equivalent to a UE-triggered beam report, an event triggered beam report, or a channel state information (CSI) report triggered by event. In this patent document, a trigger event occurs can be equivalent to the condition of the trigger event is satisfied. In this patent document, a report quantity for a beam report comprises at least one of RSRP corresponds to an SSB (synchronization signal block) index, RSRP corresponds to a CSI RS resource index (CRI) , SINR corresponds to an SSB index or SINR corresponds to a CRI. In this patent document, RSRP or SINR can be an absolute value, a range of absolute value, a difference value or a range of difference value. In this patent document, RSRP comprises L1-RSRP, and SINR comprises L1-SINR value. In this patent document, an uplink resource comprises a PUCCH transmission, a PUSCH transmission, a repetition of PUCCH transmission or a repetition of PUSCH transmission.

[0047] In this patent document, UE performs the operations described in the embodiments when UE receives a configuration of beam report which indicates or enables UE to perform beam reporting triggered by one or more trigger events, wherein each of the one or more beam reports indicated in the configuration (e.g., report configuration index or report trigger state index) is associated with one or more trigger events and is associated with one or more reference signals. UE generates uplink control information (UCI) bits associated with a beam report. In some embodiments, each beam report generated by the UE includes a set of UCI bits.

[0048] In some embodiments, UE is configured / enabled with group based beam reporting in the configuration of a beam report, wherein at least one of a maximum number of reference signals to be reported in a beam report, a number of reference signals (e.g., fixed number) to be reported in a beam report or a number of reference signal groups to be reported can be configured, wherein a reference signal group comprises one or more reference signals to reported in a beam report.

[0049] II. (a) . Embodiment 1

[0050] Embodiment 1 specifies techniques for the UE to generate UCI bits associated with a beam report (e.g., UCI bits for a beam report) associated with one or more trigger event (s) .

[0051] In some embodiments, UE generates one or more sets of UCI bits for a beam report, wherein each of the one or more set of UCI bits are mapped / associated with / includes  at least one of the following contents / fields / indications: a cell index (e.g., candidate cell index, serving cell index or physical cell index) , a reference signal resource index (e.g., SSB index or CSI RS resource index) , a report quantity or an identification of a trigger event. Wherein, the trigger event is associated with the beam report, or the trigger event is the trigger event triggers the beam report. The size of the set of UCI bits is fixed and is determined based on the bit size of the contents / fields / indications mapped to the UCI bits (e.g., the sum of bit size of the indications) . UE generates the one or more set of UCI bits for a beam report in response to the trigger event (s) associated with the beam report occurs, wherein the number of the one or more set of UCI bits is the number of reference signals (e.g., fixed number) to be reported in a beam report.

[0052] FIG. 1 shows an example of four sets of UCI bits associated with a beam report, where four sets of the UCI bits are generated, and where a reference signal index and its corresponding report quantity are mapped consecutively.

[0053] FIG. 2 shows an example of four sets of UCI bits associated with a beam report, where the four sets of UCI bits are generated, where reference signal indexes are mapped consecutively, and where a report quantity associated with the respective reference signal index are mapped consecutively.

[0054] In some embodiments, UE generating one part (e.g., first part) or two parts (e.g., first and second part) of UCI bits for a beam report, where the first part is mapped / associated with / includes at least one of the following contents / fields / indications: a presence indication indicating the beam report has been triggered or not, a number of reference signals reported in the second part, a cell index (e.g., candidate cell index, serving cell index or physical cell index) , a reference signal resource index (e.g., SSB index or CSI RS resource index) , or an identification of a trigger event, and the second part comprises one or more sets of beam information bits mapped / associated with / includes at least one of the following contents / fields / indications: a presence indication indicating the beam report has been triggered or not, a cell index (e.g., candidate cell index, serving cell index or physical cell index) , a reference signal resource index (e.g., SSB index or CSI resource index) , a report quantity, or an identification of a trigger event. In some embodiments, the UE may transmit the first part or may periodically transmit the first part even when a trigger event associated with a beam report does not occur. In some embodiments, the UE may transmit the first part and the second part when a trigger event associated with a beam report occurs.

[0055] In some embodiment, the size of the first part of UCI bits for a beam report is fixed and is determined based on the bit size of the contents / fields / indications mapped to the first part.

[0056] In some embodiments, the size of the second part of UCI bits for a beam report is associated with the number of (e.g., a total number of) the one or more sets of beam information bits.

[0057] In some embodiments, the size of the second part of UCI bits for a beam report is zero or the second part is not generated by the UE if the UE determines that a specific value is associated with any one or more contents / fields / indications associated with the first part. In one example, the presence indication in the first part indicating the beam report has not been triggered (e.g., bit value 0) . In one example, the bits of contents / fields / indications in the first part are all zeros.

[0058] In some embodiments, UE generates the first part of UCI bits for a beam report regardless of whether the trigger event (s) associated with the beam report occurs or not.

[0059] In some embodiments, UE generates the second part of UCI bits for a beam report in response to the trigger event (s) associated with the beam report occurs.

[0060] In some embodiments, the first and second part of UCI bits for a beam report are mapped / associated with / includes different contents / fields / indications. In one example, if a reference signal resource index is generated in the first part, it is not generated in the second part.

[0061] In some embodiments, one or more of the contents / fields / indications associated with the first and second part of UCI bits for a beam report are the same. In one example, the presence indication indicating the beam report has been triggered or not can be generated in both the first part and second part.

[0062] In some embodiments, UE generates a set of UCI bits for reference signal number indication, wherein a value in the UCI bits from 0 to N-1 indicates that the number of reference signals to be reported in a beam report are 1 to N or 0 to N-1 respectively. In some embodiments, N is an integer that is greater than or equal to one. The value in the UCI bits can be the decimal value corresponding to the UCI bits (e.g., UCI bits 010 can correspond to value 2) .

[0063] In some embodiments, UE generates a set of UCI bits for reference signal number indication, wherein the set of UCI bits comprise a bitmap indicating the presence of fields (e.g., RS ID and report quantity) associated with one or more reference signals in a beam report, wherein each bit corresponds to a reference signal, e.g., the first bit corresponds to the  first reference signal index, the second bit corresponds to the second reference signal index, and so on. A value of 1 of each bit in the bitmap indicates that the fields associated with the corresponding reference signal is present in the beam report.

[0064] In some embodiments, the measurement results satisfy the condition of the trigger event (s) of the beam report, where the measurement results are associated with at least one of the reference signals associated with the one or more sets of UCI bits for a beam report, or the one part or two parts of UCI bits for a beam report, or the set of UCI bits for reference signal number indication.

[0065] In one example, N sets of UCI bits associated with N reference signals are generated for a beam report, and measurement results of any one of or all of the N reference signals satisfy the condition of the trigger event (s) of the beam report.

[0066] In some embodiments, bit size of the set of UCI bits for reference signal number indication is determined based on the maximum number or the number of reference signals to be reported in a beam report in the configuration. In one example, the bit size is log2 (N) . In one example, the bit size is N. N represents the maximum number or the fixed number of reference signals to be reported in a beam report.

[0067] II. (b) . Embodiment 2

[0068] Embodiment 2 is to specify UE transmitting the UCI bits for a beam report (i.e., the set of UCI bits or one or two parts of UCI bits in embodiment 1) or the UCI bits for reference signal number indication in uplink resource (s) .

[0069] In embodiments below, the uplink resource (s) carrying the UCI bits for a beam report or the UCI bits for reference signal number indication are configured for the beam report. The uplink resource (s) comprise at least one of: PUCCH, SR, PUSCH with configured grant, PUSCH with DCI scheduling, PUSCH dedicatedly configured for the beam report.

[0070] In some embodiments, UE transmits the first part and second part (if any) of UCI bits for a beam report in one uplink resource. In such embodiments, the UE transmits the first part of the UCI bits and may selectively transmit second part of the UCI bits. In one example, UE only transmits the first part when the second part is not generated by UE in response to the condition in embodiment 1.

[0071] In some embodiments, UE transmits the first part of UCI bits for a beam report in a first resource, and the UE transmits the second part of the UCI bits for the beam report in a second uplink resource. The first uplink resource comprises a PUCCH (e.g., PUCCH format 0 or 1) or an SR. The second uplink resource comprises a PUSCH or a PUCCH.

[0072] In some embodiments, UE transmits the uplink resource associated with the set of UCI bits for a beam report or the uplink resource associated with first and second part of UCI bits for a beam report or the first uplink resource associated with the first part of UCI bits for a beam report or the second uplink resource associated with the second part of UCI bits for a beam report based on a report period configured for the beam report.

[0073] In one example, UE transmits the uplink resource associated with the UCI bits for a beam report if any in the symbol / slot / frame determined based on the report period.

[0074] FIG. 3 shows an example block diagram of a scenario where a user equipment (UE) transmits a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) carrying first part of UCI bits associated with a beam report regardless of occurrence of trigger events, and where the UE transmits PUSCH carrying second part of UCI bits associated with a beam report in repose to the trigger event. The PUSCH transmissions are in a period configured for the beam report.

[0075] In one example, UE transmits the UCI bits for a beam report if any in the uplink resource of which the symbol / slot / frame satisfies the condition determined based on the report period.

[0076] In one example, UE is configured with PUSCH transmissions with configured grant (CG-PUSCH) for a beam report, and UE transmits the UCI bits for the beam report if any in the CG-PUSCH transmissions of which the symbol / slot / frame satisfies the condition determined based on the report period.

[0077] In one example, UE is configured with a PUCCH resource or a dedicated PUSCH resource for a beam report, and UE transmits the UCI bits for the beam report if any in the PUCCH / PUSCH resource and transmits the PUCCH / PUSCH resource in the symbol / slot / frame determined based on the report period.

[0078] In some embodiments, UE transmits the second uplink resource associated with the second part of UCI bits for a beam report in a time interval after the first uplink resource associated with the first part of UCI bits for a beam report.

[0079] FIG. 4 shows an example scenario where a UE transmits a second uplink resource (e.g., PUSCH) carrying the second part of UCI bits in a time interval after the first uplink resource (e.g., physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) ) carrying the first part of UCI bits.

[0080] In some embodiments, UE transmits a first uplink resource carrying the UCI bits for a beam report in a time interval after a second uplink resource carrying the UCI bits for a reference signal number indication.

[0081] In embodiments above, the time interval starts from the first or last symbol of the second uplink resource or from the slot of the second uplink resource.

[0082] In embodiments above, the time interval is in the unit of symbol or slot.

[0083] In embodiments above, the time interval is determined based on at least one of: a PUSCH preparation time, a UE capability value, a configured value, a fixed value or a predefined value.

[0084] II. (c) . Embodiment 3

[0085] Embodiment 3 is to specify UE transmitting more than one beam report correspond to a beam report configuration in response to a single trigger event occurs.

[0086] In some embodiments, UE transmits the more than one beam report in a period, wherein the period is configured in the beam report configuration or is related to the period of the at least one reference signal (e.g., SSB or CSI-RS) associated with the beam report configuration.

[0087] In some embodiments, UE does not transmit the beam reports after receiving a DCI indicating to stop / cancel / deactivate transmissions of the beam reports, wherein an indication field in the DCI indicates an identifier or index of the beam report (e.g., report configuration index or report trigger state index) . In such embodiments, the UE may transmit the beam reports before receiving the DCI.

[0088] In some embodiments, the maximum number of the more than one beam reports is configured in the beam report configuration that is transmitted to the UE. UE transmits the more than one beam report periodically until the maximum number is reached.

[0089] In some embodiments, UE transmits the more than one beam reports after a first condition (e.g., entering condition) of the trigger event is satisfied until a second condition (e.g., leaving condition) of the same trigger event is satisfied. The trigger event occurs can be equivalent to the first condition is satisfied and the second condition is not satisfied.

[0090] FIG. 5 shows an exemplary block diagram of a hardware platform 500 that may be a part of a network device (e.g., base station) or a communication device (e.g., a user equipment (UE) ) . The hardware platform 500 includes at least one processor 510 and a memory 505 having instructions stored thereupon. The instructions upon execution by the processor 510 configure the hardware platform 500 to perform the operations described in FIGS. 1 to 4, 6 to 8, and in the various embodiments described in this patent document. The transmitter 515 transmits or sends information or data to another device. For example, a network device transmitter can send a message to a user equipment. The receiver 520 receives information or data transmitted or sent by another device. For example, a user equipment can receive a message from a network device.

[0091] The implementations as discussed above will apply to a wireless communication. FIG. 6 shows an example of a wireless communication system (e.g., a 5G or NR cellular network) that includes a base station 620 and one or more user equipment (UE) 611, 612 and 613. In some embodiments, the UEs access the BS (e.g., the network) using a communication link to the network (sometimes called uplink direction, as depicted by dashed arrows 631, 632, 633) , which then enables subsequent communication (e.g., shown in the direction from the network to the UEs, sometimes called downlink direction, shown by arrows 641, 642, 643) from the BS to the UEs. In some embodiments, the BS send information to the UEs (sometimes called downlink direction, as depicted by arrows 641, 642, 643) , which then enables subsequent communication (e.g., shown in the direction from the UEs to the BS, sometimes called uplink direction, shown by dashed arrows 631, 632, 633) from the UEs to the BS. The UE may be, for example, a smartphone, a tablet, a mobile computer, a machine to machine (M2M) device, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, and so on.
