AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The synchronization issue between Transmission/Reception Points (TRPs) in multi-Transmission/Reception Point (MTRP) technology, which is an extension of 5G Coordinated Multipoint (CoMP), leads to incorrect Channel State Information (CSI) reporting due to the inability to accurately measure and report inter-TRP time offsets exceeding the cyclic prefix (CP) length.

Method used

A method for a terminal device to measure and report time offsets of TRPs relative to a reference TRP, using extended reference signals to determine time intervals within which these offsets fall, allowing for accurate timing adjustments and exclusion of TRPs with excessive delays from CJT transmission.

Benefits of technology

Enables accurate measurement and reporting of inter-TRP time offsets beyond the CP limit, improving CSI reporting and reducing channel delay spread, thereby enhancing CJT transmission performance.

[0046] In the following, for purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the first apparatus 110 operating as a terminal device and the second apparatus 120 operating as a network device (e.g. a gNB or a TRP) . However, in some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal device may be implemented at a network device or other device, and operations described in connection with a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other device.

[0047] Communications in the communication environment 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) , the sixth generation (6G) , and the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0048] NR MIMO was approved to enhance NR MIMO features. One of objectives is to introduce a new stand-alone reporting on Physical Uplink Shared Channel (PUSCH) to assist a network device in CJT with non-ideal synchronisation and backhaul.

[0049] UE reporting enhancement is specified for CJT deployments under non-ideal synchronization and backhaul. The UE reporting enhancement targets at Frequency Range 1 (FR1) for both FDD and TDD. Assuming a channel-state-information reference signal (CSI-RS) design, with stand-alone aperiodic reporting on PUSCH, an inter-TRP time misalignment and frequency / phase offset measurement and reporting is proposed. In this new report, a UE is configured to measure and report inter-TRP time offset and frequency / phase offset.

[0050] Regarding inter-TRP time misalignment, in a CJT transmission, the receive timing difference (RTD) at a UE between signals transmitted by antennas of two transmitting TRPs is a combination of a TRP relative time alignment error (TAE) and a radio frequency (RF) propagation delay difference: ΔtTRP=ΔtTAE+Δtprop

[0051] In general, a maximum receive timing difference (MRTD) should be smaller than a cyclic prefix (CP) with the remaining duration of the CP allowing for channel delay spread.

[0052] CJT is a type of downlink multi-TRP MIMO transmission based on single- Downlink Control Information (DCI) , where a central scheduler, i.e., a serving TRP, coordinates transmitting TRPs and each of downlink MIMO layers is transmitted from all cooperating TRPs on the same time and frequency resources. The serving TRP may configure a UE to report a CJT CSI report with Precoding Matrix Indicator (PMI)  / rank indication (RI)  / Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) facilitating precoding of the MIMO layers in the Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH) transmission.

[0053] In an inter-site CJT scenario, the cooperating TRPs are located in different cell sites. In this case, receive timing difference between signals transmitted from antenna ports of different TRPs can be considerable given the size of the CJT deployment. The receive timing difference between two TRPs may depend on the TRP deployment scenario, a position of a UE relative to the TRPs, channel propagation conditions, etc.

[0054] In Type-II CJT CSI reporting with Mode 1, a mechanism was introduced for a UE to report N0-1 timing offsets relative to a reference TRP (the first TRP of the N0 TRPs) , where N0 is a number of TRPs configured or selected for CSI reporting. This time offset reporting allows to reduce the delay spread of combined CJT channels and to better capture the energy of the channel by the selection of the frequency domain (FD) basis vectors, as specified in the codebook description. The time offset for TRP j, with j=2, …, N0 is reported as a layer-common index dj∈ {0, 1, …, N3O3-1} , where N3 is the number of PMI sub-bands and O3∈ {1, 4} is an oversampling factor in frequency domain. As a result, the phase of the precoding matrix of PMI sub-band index i=0, …, N3-1, adjusted by the phase factor:  with ψj=dj / O3, for all MIMO layers transmitted by TRP j to the same UE.

[0055] The advantage of oversampling in frequency domain in Mode 1 for the time offset reporting is to increase the accuracy of the FD basis vectors selection, by allowing the selection of different orthogonal groups of codebook vectors for different TRPs in a similar way as oversampling in the spatial domain improves the accuracy of the beam selection. It is noted that, for single TRP, oversampling in the frequency domain is a UE implementation choice that is transparent to the network device. This is because selecting one of the O3 orthogonal groups of FD basis vectors, which corresponds to a fractional time offset applied in the delay domain, is equivalent to applying a same phase multiplication across all the CSI-RS ports of a PMI and it does not change the precoder. It is noted that oversampling in frequency domain does not extend the maximum timing  offset that can be measured by a UE, which depends on the size of the PMI sub-band for Mode 1.

[0056] As discussed above, the relative receive timing difference between two TRPs may be larger than the maximum delay (or time offset, or FD component) that can be measured and reported by CJT CSI and it may also exceed a normal CP length. In fact, the maximum measurable time offset reported in CJT CSI Mode 1 is only a fraction of a normal CP length. When the combined delay spread of the channels observed from the CSI-RS resources of the configured TRPs exceeds the maximum delay that can be observed by the FD basis selection in the CJT CSI report, the PMI calculated in a CJT report, with Mode 1 or Mode 2 is incorrect. If the relative time offset for a TRP exceeds the CP length, correct CSI-RS measurement may not be possible for that TRP.

[0057] Two examples are shown. In the first example, when the combined delay spread of two or more TRPs is within the measurable time interval associated with a CJT CSI report, PMI calculation and reporting is correct. In the second example, the combined delay spread of two or more TRPs exceeds the measurable time interval, PMI calculation and reporting is wrong. The measurable time interval is of length 1 /  (PMI sub-band size) .

[0058] FIG. 2A shows schematic diagram of a channel delay profile for a two-TRP CJT transmission, which is directed to the first example above. The combined delay spread is within the maximum observable delay spread of a CJT CSI report, which equals to 1 / PMI sub-band. FIG. 2B shows schematic diagrams of channel delay profiles for the channel in FIG. 2A. The channel delay profiles shown in FIG. 2B are measured in the interval [1, 1 / PMI sub-band) by a UE calculating a CJT PMI from two CSI-RS resources. Each of the channel delay profiles shown in FIG. 2B is directed to one TRP. FIG. 2C illustrates a schematic diagram of a channel delay profile for a CJT transmission, in which PMI is correctly calculated because it is measured on a CJT delay profile obtained by applying the same time offset to both TRPs. The same time offset does not need to be reported.

[0059] FIG. 2D illustrate a schematic diagram of a channel delay profile for a two-TRP CJT transmission, which is directed to the second example above. The combined delay spread exceeds the maximum observable delay spread of a CJT CSI report, which equals to 1 / PMI sub-band. FIG. 2E shows schematic diagrams of channel delay profiles for the channel in FIG. 2D. The channel delay profiles shown in FIG. 2E are measured in the interval [1, 1 / PMI sub-band) by a UE calculating a CJT PMI from two CSI-RS resources.  Each of the channel delay profiles shown in FIG. 2E is directed to one TRP. FIG. 2F illustrates a schematic diagram of a channel delay profile for a CJT transmission, in which PMI is wrongly calculated because it is measured on a CJT delay profile obtained by applying different time offsets to the two TRPs.

[0060] According to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution for timing offset measurement and reporting. In the solution, a first apparatus (e.g. a terminal device, such as a UE) is configured to determine respective one or more time offsets based on measurements on respective reference signal transmitted by at least one TRP and a reference TRP. After determining the respective one or more time offsets, the first apparatus transmits a time offset report to a second apparatus (e.g. a network device, such as a gNB or a TRP) , which indicate a set of time offset indices.

[0061] That is, a UE is configured to measure the timing offset of TRPs relative to a reference TRP and report, for each TRP except the reference TRP, an indication of a time interval in which the relative timing offset falls. These time intervals are configured such that a gNB can determine which TRPs and which UEs have relative time offsets within the same time interval. The gNB can then apply the correct timing adjustments, one for each of the time intervals, to the CSI-RS resources transmitted from a given TRP and configure the UEs that reported that TRP time offset in a same interval with the same CSI-RS resource.

[0062] This method allows a UE configured with CJT CSI to report residual inter-TRP time offsets within the measurable time interval of Mode 1. It also reduces the number of possible time adjustment values the gNB may apply to CSI-RS resources by exploiting CJT CSI Mode 1 to resolve any timing offset within the measurable interval of Mode 1.

[0063] Additionally, the gNB can determine, based on the time interval indications, if the received timing offset for a TRP exceeds the CP length and exclude this TRP from the candidates for CJT transmission for that UE.

[0064] A DFT codebook may also be configured in association with the inter-TRP time offset measurement to provide a common interpretation of the reported time offset. By applying the DFT codebook basis vectors to the reference signal measurements in frequency, for example a tracking reference signal (TRS) (i.e. CSI-RS for tracking) resource, the index corresponding to the strongest codebook basis vector is used to determine which time interval to report for a given TRP.

[0065] Example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0066] FIG. 3 illustrates a signaling chart 300 for timing offset measurement and reporting according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling chart 300 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1. The signaling chart 300 may involve a first apparatus 110 and a second apparatus 120. In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may be a terminal device (for example, a UE) or comprised in a terminal device. The second apparatus 120 may be a network device (for example, a gNB or TRP) or comprised in a network device.

[0067] It is to be understood that the signaling chart 300 may involve more apparatuses or less apparatuses, and the number of apparatuses illustrated in FIG. 3 is only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations.

[0068] As shown in FIG. 3, the second apparatus 120 transmits (305) a configuration of a time offset report to the first apparatus 110. The configuration indicates the first apparatus 110 to measure and report respective one or more time offsets of at least one TRP associated to a reference TRP.

[0069] The first apparatus 110 receives (310) the configuration. In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may receive, based on the configuration, respective reference signal associated with at least one TRP and a further reference signal associated with a reference TRP. A reference signal may include, for example but not limited to, a TRS and / or a CSI-RS.

[0070] The first apparatus 110 then determines (315) , based on the configuration, the respective one or more time offsets. The determination of the respective one or more time offsets is based on measurements on respective reference signal transmitted by the at least one TRP and a further reference signal transmitted by the reference TRP.

[0071] After the determination of the respective one or more time offsets, the first apparatus 110 transmits (320) the time offset report to the second apparatus 120. The time offset report indicates a set of time offset indices, which are associated with at least one time interval within which respective one or more time offsets fall.

[0072] In some example embodiments, a time offset index value may be associated to a time interval with a boundary identified by a time value dependent on a subcarrier spacing  (SCS) .

[0073] In such case, a CP length may be compared with a maximum measurable time offsets in Rel 18 CJT CSI Mode 1 firstly. The CP length depends on the SCS, Δf, as follows:

[0074] It is noted that, the extended CP may only be configured for 60KHz SCS. In CJT CSI Mode 1, the relative TRP timing difference is measured as an integer or fractional offset of N3 FD codebook bases. Hence, a frequency unit used to determine the timing offset range is equal to a PMI sub-band, which can be seen from a phase factor for PMI sub-band i. ΔfPMI is used to indicate the size of a PMI sub-band in frequency. Observing that the phase factor at frequency iΔfPMI corresponding to a time offset td, d∈{0, 1, …, N3O3-1} can be written as:  from the phase formula for TRP j, the corresponding timing offset values may be obtained as follows:

[0075] Therefore, the timing offset values reported with Mode 1 are: [t0, 2t0, …, (N3O3-1) t0] with minimum offset t0=1 /  (N3O3ΔfPMI) , which corresponds to a uniform quantisation of the time interval: [0, 1 / ΔfPMI) .

[0076] The size of the PMI sub-band, ΔfPMI, is given by the number of PRBs per PMI sub-band,  times the PRB size in frequency. Therefore, the maximum measurable timing offset in Mode 1 is given by:

[0077] It is noted that, with the CJT CSI Mode 1, one way to extend the range of measurable timing offsets may be to increase the value of R. However, because of UE complexity, R=1 is a default parameter value configurable for CJT CSI reporting, and R=2 is subject to UE capability.

[0078] In conclusion, the maximum timing difference that can be reported with Mode 1 is inversely proportional to the size of the PMI sub-band. An oversampling factor O3=4 increases the granularity of the reported timing difference but it does not extend the range of measurable timing offset. The maximum measurable timing offset as fraction of the CP length is shown in Table. 1 below for all sub-band sizes and both normal and extended CP.

[0079] Table. 1

[0080] On the other hand, with the standalone time offset reporting, a UE may be configured to measure inter-TRP time offsets from a CSI-RS resource, including CSI-RS for tracking, without being restricted by the frequency granularity of a PMI sub-band as in CJT CSI Mode 1 reporting. This allows to measure inter-TRP time offsets in a range up to an extended CP length. In fact, the minimum CSI-RS spacing in frequency for a density-3 resource, used in a TRS set, equals to 4Δf. Hence, the maximum measurable timing offset based on these measurements in frequency is given by:

[0081] If the PDSCH data uses normal CP, the second apparatus 120 may configure inter-TRP time offset reporting on either CSI-RS or TRS resources, because the first apparatus 110 may have to obtain at least one reference signal observation per PRB to estimate relative time differences in a range larger than a normal CP length. This may be achieved by providing reference signals with density 1 (CSI-RS) or 3 (TRS) .

[0082] If the PDSCH data uses the extended CP, the second apparatus 120 may configure inter-TRP time offset reporting on TRS only, because a UE may have to obtain at least 3 reference signal observations per PRB to estimate relative time differences in a range up to the extended CP length. This may be achieved by providing reference signals with density 3, i.e., TRS.

[0083] For normal CP, the maximum measurable timing offset that may be configured with density-1 CSI-RS is the same as that obtained with density-3 TRS by using one RS observation per PRB, and it is three times smaller than the TRS-based maximum calculated above, i.e., 1 /  (12·Δf) . There are intervals of size equal to the maximum measurable timing offset in CJT CSI Mode 1, with according to NR specifications.

[0084] For extended CP, the maximum measurable timing offset may be configured with density-3 TRS by using one RS observation per PRB, and it is equal to the extended CP length, i.e., 1 /  (4·Δf) . Therefore, there are intervals of size equal to the maximum measurable timing offset in CJT CSI Mode 1.

[0085] In general, given that B is the bit width of the indicator reporting the time offset of a TRP relative to a reference TRP, the time offset intervals may be defined as a function of the subcarrier spacing, Δf, or, equivalently, a PRB size in frequency, corresponding to 12·Δf. Let T (Δf) be this function of the subcarrier spacing, which defines a reference time. For example, T (Δf) may be defined as follows:

[0086] where c is a fixed constant or a configurable value, for example etc. and the mapping between the time offset index and the corresponding time offset interval is defined in Table 2 below.

[0087] Table 2

[0088] In further example embodiments, a time offset index value may be associated to a time interval with a boundary identified by a time value associated with an index of a vector codebook.

[0089] Specifically, in the proposed mapping of time offset indices to time intervals, only positive offsets are considered. In fact, the reference TRP for time offset reporting may be selected by the first apparatus 110 and reported as part of the time offset report, such that all the relative offsets are positive. some additional bits of overhead may be introduced due to an indicator of the reference TRP.

[0090] Alternatively, the vector codebook may include an inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) and / or discrete Fourier transforms (DFT) codebook. In such case, the reference TRP may be fixed. For example, the reference TRP may be the first TRP, following the order of configured CSI-RS resources. An IDFT-based (or DFT-based) codebook can be specified, such that negative time offsets are reported as positive offsets modulo the period in the time domain.

[0091] One example of how this codebook can be configured and the corresponding mapping of time offset indices to time intervals is as follows. The vector codebook size may be configured by a parameter NTO, which determines the number of CSI / RS or TRS measurement samples in the frequency domain to which the codebook vectors are applied. NTO may be equal to the number of PRBs in the configured bandwidth part (BWP) . The codebook vector of index d=0, 1, …, NTO-1 is given by

[0092] where f=0, 1, …, NTO-1 is the frequency unit index. For example, if NTO equals the number of PRBs in the BWP, then the frequency associated to index f is given by f·12·Δf. As a consequence, the time offset value, td, associated with the codebook vector of index d is given by The time offset intervals are then expressed in terms of codebook index intervals, as illustrated in the following Table 3, such that a UE reports the time offset index corresponding to the codebook index interval where the strongest codebook vector is found. Say dmax the strongest codebook vector index and the mapping table of time offset indices is given by the following Table 3.

[0093] Table 3

[0094] In case that the time offset index value is associated to time interval with a boundary identified by a time value associated with an index of a vector codebook, a time offset index value may further identify a boundary of a time interval that equals a normal or extended CP or a fraction of the normal or extended cyclic prefix.

[0095] When the time offset index value further identifies a boundary of a time interval that equals a normal or extended CP, the time offset indices and corresponding intervals are obtained with and B=1, such that the normal CP length is configured as a threshold and the first apparatus 110 reports whether a relative TRP time offset exceeds a normal CP length. The mapping table of time offset indices is given by the following Table 4.

[0096] Table 4

[0097] The time offset intervals are illustrated in FIG. 4A below, which illustrates a schematic diagram of time offset intervals according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 4A, the second apparatus 120 may determine from the reported time indices which TRPs can be configured for a CJT transmission for a certain UE and which should be excluded because of the likely degradation caused by the delay spread exceeding the CP. In an example scenario, TRP 1 and TRP 2 may serve UE 1 and UE 2 in a CJT transmission and TRP 1 and TRP 3 may serve UE 3. The second apparatus 120 may not configure Mode 1 for CJT CSI reporting to any of the three UEs, because the relative time offset may exceed the maximum delay that can be measured with Mode 1. As a consequence, the second apparatus 120 may not apply any time offset pre-compensation to the CSI-RS resources transmitted by the TRPs and the CSI reporting may not benefit from a reduction in delay spread of channel measured from those CSI-RS.

[0098] Alternatively, when a time offset index value further identifies a boundary of a time interval that equals a fraction of the normal or extended cyclic prefix, the time offset  indices and corresponding intervals are obtained with and B=2. A mapping table of time offset indices is given by Table 5.

[0099] Table 5

[0100] The time offset intervals are illustrated in FIG. 4B below, which illustrates a schematic diagram of time offset intervals according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 4B, the normal CP length is divided in 3 equal size time intervals of length smaller than the maximum time offset that can be reported in CJT CSI Mode 1. The second apparatus 120 can then configure Mode 1 CJT CSI reporting for all 3 UEs, by applying appropriate time offset compensation to the CSI-RS resources. In an example scenario, TRP 1 may transmit CSI-RS resource 1-1 with time offset compensation and CSI-RS resource 1-2 with time offset compensation TRP 2 and TRP 3 may transmit CSI-RS resource 2 and 3, respectively, without any time offset compensation. UE 1 may then be configured to measure CSI-RS resource 1-1 and 2, UE2 may be configured to measure CSI-RS resource 1-1 and 2 and UE3 may be configured to measure CSI-RS resource 1-2 and 3. The CJT CSI reported by all the three UEs in this scenario benefits from a reduction of the delay spread by exploiting Mode1 and, at the same time, the number of UE-specific CSI-RS resources is minimized.

[0101] Referring to FIG. 3 again, the second apparatus 120 then receives (325) the time offset report from the first apparatus 110. In some example embodiments, the second apparatus 120 may obtain a relationship between a plurality of time offset index values and corresponding time offsets and then determine the respective one or more time offsets based on the relationship and the received set of time offset indices.

[0102] In addition, the second apparatus 120 may perform a time offset compensation on reference signal transmissions from the at least one TRP. The time offset compensation may be performed based on the determined respective one or more time offsets. In some  further embodiments, the second apparatus 120 may perform a time offset compensation on downlink data channel transmissions from the at least one TRP based on the determined respective one or more time offsets.

[0103] In some example embodiments, if a time offset associated with a TRP is determined to exceed a CP length based on the time offset report, the second apparatus 120 may exclude the TRP from the candidates for a CJT transmission for the first apparatus 110.

[0104] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus may include a terminal device and the second apparatus may include a network device.

[0105] According to the above example embodiments, since the delay that the first apparatus 110 can measure during a CJT CSI report may be too restrictive to measure the receive time difference between the signals received from two TRPs, the method for configuring the time offset reporting is considered to address the issue.

[0106] FIG. 5 illustrates a signaling chart 500 for timing offset measurement and reporting according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling chart 500 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1. The signaling chart 500 may involve a first apparatus 110 and a second apparatus 120. In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may be a terminal device (for example, a UE) or comprised in a terminal device. The second apparatus 120 may be a network device (e.g. a gNB or a serving TRP) or comprised in a network device. The signaling chart 500 shows the control signalling between the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 from a configuration of a time offset reporting to a CJT transmission of PDSCH.

[0107] It is to be understood that the signaling chart 500 may involve more apparatuses or less apparatuses, and the number of apparatuses illustrated in FIG. 5 is only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations.

[0108] The second apparatus 120 transmits (505) configuration of a time offset report to the first apparatus 110 and the first apparatus 110 receives (510) the configuration. The second apparatus 120 further transmits (515) a trigger for the time offset report to the first apparatus 110 and the first apparatus 110 receives (520) the trigger. After receiving the trigger, the first apparatus 110 determines (525) a time offset between two reference signals and transmits (530) the time offset to the second apparatus 120 via a time offset report, which indicates a time offset index associated with a time interval within which  the time offset falls.

[0109] The second apparatus 120 receives (535) the time offset and then applies (540) a time offset compensation on reference signal transmissions. Then, the second apparatus 120 transmits (545) a trigger for CSI report to the first apparatus 110. After receiving (550) the trigger, the first apparatus 110 measures (555) CSI from the two reference signals and transmit (560) the measured CSI to the second apparatus 120.

[0110] The second apparatus 120 receives (565) the measured CSI and applies (570) a CSI and time offset compensation to PDSCH.

[0111] FIG. 6 shows a flowchart of an example method 600 implemented at a first apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 600 will be described from the perspective of the first apparatus 110 in FIG. 1.

[0113] At block 620, the first apparatus 110 determines, based on the configuration, the respective one or more time offsets based on measurements on respective reference signal transmitted by the at least one TRP and a further reference signal transmitted by the reference TRP.

[0114] At block 620, the first apparatus 110 transmits, to the second apparatus, the time offset report indicating a set of time offset indices associated with at least one time interval within which respective one or more time offsets fall.

[0120] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus comprises a terminal device and the second apparatus comprises a network device.

[0121] FIG. 7 shows a flowchart of an example method 700 implemented at a second apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 700 will be described from the perspective of the second apparatus 120 in FIG. 1.

[0132] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus comprises a terminal device and the second apparatus comprises a network device.
