Abstract

Example embodiments of the present disclosure relate to apparatuses, methods, and storage medium for device synchronization. In a method, a first apparatus receives a synchronization signal from a second apparatus within a first communication network. Based on the synchronization signal, the first apparatus obtains first synchronization information for the first communication network. The first apparatus further receives, from the second apparatus, at least one offset between the first synchronization information and second synchronization information for a second communication network.

[0022] Principle of the present disclosure may now be described with reference to some example embodiments. It is to be understood that these embodiments are described only for the purpose of illustration and help those skilled in the art to understand and implement the present disclosure, without suggesting any limitation as to the scope of the disclosure.  Embodiments described herein may be implemented in various manners other than the ones described below.

[0023] In the following description and claims, unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skills in the art to which this disclosure belongs.

[0024] References in the present disclosure to “one embodiment, ” “an embodiment, ” “an example embodiment, ” and the like indicate that the embodiment described may include a particular feature, structure, or characteristic, but it is not necessary that every embodiment includes the particular feature, structure, or characteristic. Moreover, such phrases are not necessarily referring to the same embodiment. Further, when a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is described in connection with an embodiment, it is submitted that it is within the knowledge of one skilled in the art to affect such feature, structure, or characteristic in connection with other embodiments whether or not explicitly described.

[0025] It shall be understood that although the terms “first, ” “second, ” …, etc. in front of noun (s) and the like may be used herein to describe various elements, these elements may not be limited by these terms. These terms are only used to distinguish one element from another and they do not limit the order of the noun (s) . For example, a first element could be termed a second element, and similarly, a second element could be termed a first element, without departing from the scope of example embodiments. As used herein, the term “and / or” includes any and all combinations of one or more of the listed terms.

[0026] As used herein, “at least one of the following: <a list of two or more elements>” and “at least one of <a list of two or more elements>” and similar wording, where the list of two or more elements are joined by “and” or “or” , mean at least any one of the elements, or at least any two or more of the elements, or at least all the elements.

[0027] As used herein, unless stated explicitly, performing a step “in response to A” does not indicate that the step is performed immediately after “A” occurs and one or more intervening steps may be included.

[0028] The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of example embodiments. As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as  well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. It may be further understood that the terms “comprises” , “comprising” , “has” , “having” , “includes” and / or “including” , when used herein, specify the presence of stated features, elements, and / or components etc., but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, elements, components and / or combinations thereof.

[0029] As used in this application, the term “circuitry” may refer to one or more or all of the following:

[0030] (a) hardware-only circuit implementations (such as implementations in only analog and / or digital circuitry) and

[0031] (b) combinations of hardware circuits and software, such as (as applicable) :

[0032] (i) a combination of analog and / or digital hardware circuit (s) with software / firmware and

[0033] (ii) any portions of hardware processor (s) with software (including digital signal processor (s) ) , software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a mobile phone or server, to perform various functions) and

[0034] (c) hardware circuit (s) and or processor (s) , such as a microprocessor (s) or a portion of a microprocessor (s) , that requires software (e.g., firmware) for operation, but the software may not be present when it is not needed for operation.

[0035] This definition of circuitry applies to all uses of this term in this application, including in any claims. As a further example, as used in this application, the term circuitry also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (or multiple processors) or portion of a hardware circuit or processor and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware. The term circuitry also covers, for example and if applicable to the particular claim element, a baseband integrated circuit or processor integrated circuit for a mobile device or a similar integrated circuit in server, a cellular network device, or other computing or network device.

[0036] As used herein, the term “communication network” refers to a network following any suitable communication standards, such as New Radio (NR) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) ,  High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) , Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) and so on. Furthermore, the communications between a terminal device and a network device in the communication network may be performed according to any suitable generation communication protocols, including, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) , the sixth generation (6G) communication protocols, and / or any other protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Embodiments of the present disclosure may be applied in various communication systems. Given the rapid development in communications, there may of course also be future type communication technologies and systems with which the present disclosure may be embodied. It may not be seen as limiting the scope of the present disclosure to only the aforementioned system.

[0037] As used herein, the term “network device” refers to a node in a communication network via which a terminal device accesses the network and receives services therefrom. The network device may include a base station (BS) or an access point (AP) , for example, x NodeB (xNB) , such as a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) and an NR NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a Remote Radio Unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, an Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) node, a low power node such as a femto, a pico, a non-terrestrial network (NTN) or non-ground network device such as a satellite network device, a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite and a geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO) satellite, an aircraft network device, and so forth, depending on the applied terminology and technology. In some example embodiments, radio access network (RAN) split architecture includes a Centralized Unit (CU) and a Distributed Unit (DU) at an IAB donor node. An IAB node includes a Mobile Terminal (IAB-MT) part that behaves like a UE toward the parent node, and a DU part of an IAB node behaves like a base station toward the next-hop IAB node.

[0038] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , or an Access Terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer,  image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (IoT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. The terminal device may also correspond to a Mobile Termination (MT) part of an IAB node (e.g., a relay node) . In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0039] As used herein, the term “resource, ” “transmission resource, ” “resource block, ” “physical resource block” (PRB) , “uplink resource, ” or “downlink resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, for example, a communication between a terminal device and a network device, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, or any other combination of the time, frequency, space and / or code domain resource enabling a communication, and the like. In the following, unless explicitly stated, a resource in both frequency domain and time domain may be used as an example of a transmission resource for describing some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments of the present disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.

[0040] In cellular systems e.g., long term evolution (LTE) and the fifth generation (5G) New Radio (NR) systems, a base station generally transmits a synchronization signal / physical broadcast channel (PBCH) block (SSB) periodically to provide an initial synchronization reference and essential system information. When user equipment (UE) initially accesses the system, it may need to continuously scan potential frequency positions to acquire the SSB. At each candidate frequency position of the SSB, the UE generally needs to continuously monitor and search for the SSB for a duration of one or more SSB periods. It can be seen that complexity of initial synchronization operations and accordingly latency of initial synchronization are relatively large which may be undesired  especially for some UEs that are sensitive to the power consumptions. In 6G subnetworks, a subnetwork may need to acquire synchronization information from the parent WAN (or WAN network) at the same time. The AP may need to provide a synchronization reference to intra-subnetwork (subNW) devices.

[0041] In a subnetwork, a device generally communicates with an AP (or a subNW AP) or directly with other devices under coordination of the AP. These intra-subnetwork transmissions generally occur with the same synchronization reference provided by the AP, where the AP determines the intra-subnetwork synchronization reference based on the synchronization information acquired from a base station of the parent WAN (or a WAN base station) . In some cases, the device in the subnetwork also needs to connect directly with the parent WAN network. For example, the device receives paging signaling or the like from a WAN base station and / or a subNW AP for building a communication connection towards the WAN base station, or the device itself receives data from its application layer to be transmitted to the WAN base station. In such cases, the device may suffer relatively large synchronization complexity and / or large synchronization latency as mentioned above.

[0042] Example embodiments of the present disclosure propose a synchronization solution. This solution introduces at least one offset between first synchronization information for a first communication network (such as a subnetwork) and second synchronization information for a second communication network (such as a WAN) . An apparatus within the first communication network may use the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information for synchronization with the second communication network. In this way, synchronization complexity and overhead for the apparatus within the first communication network may be reduced for an apparatus, thereby achieving low power consumption and low cost. Meanwhile, synchronization speed may be increased, thereby achieving low latency.

[0043] It is to be noted that although the issue is originating from a subnetwork and a WAN network, the proposed solution herein may be applied in general for different communication networks. In the following, some example embodiments will be described using a subnetwork and a WAN as examples while the example embodiments herein can be applied in general for other communication networks.

[0044] FIG. 1 illustrates an example communication environment 100 in which example  embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented.

[0045] The communication environment 100 includes a plurality of first apparatuses 110-1, …, 110-N such as a sensor, an actuator, a mobile phone, or other terminal devices or UEs. For the purpose of discussions, the first apparatuses 110-1, …, 110-N may be individually or collectively referred to as first apparatus (es) 110. The first apparatus 110 may communicate with a second apparatus 120 such as an AP within a first communication network 130 (or a first communication system) .

[0046] In some example embodiments, the first communication network 130 may be a subnetwork such as an in-X subnetwork. Example in-X subnetworks as in-robot or in-production, in-vehicle, in-body, or in-house subnetwork are shown in FIGS. 2A to 2D. In these examples, APs 205, 210, 215 and 220 operate as examples of the second apparatus 120 in FIG. 1. As shown in FIG. 2A, sensors and actuators may be used in an in-robot / in-production module subnetwork 200A. In an in-vehicle subnetwork 200B in FIG. 2B, sensors and actuators may be embedded in a trunk, an ignition, a safety, an engine, or a suspension within a vehicle 225. The subnetworks 200A and 200B may have high performance requirements in both reliability (up to six nines or more) and latency (down to the level of 100us or even below) , for example, for periodic and deterministic communication services which may be challenging scenarios in a 6G system.

[0047] As shown in FIG. 2C, a pacemaker 230 and some haptic sensors / actuators may be deployed within an in-body subnetwork 200C, for example, to provide life-critical data services with high performances over a local capillary coverage of the in-body subnetwork 200C. As shown in FIG. 2D, some in-house apparatuses, such as virtual reality (VR) glasses 230, may be deployed within an in-house subnetwork 200D.

[0048] Still with reference to FIG. 1, traffic with different time critical levels may be transferred between the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatuses 120 in the first communication network 130, which may comprise high time critical traffic (<< 1ms) , medium time critical traffic (1~10ms) , and / or non-critical traffic such as Key Performance Indicator (KPI) monitoring. As shown in FIG. 1, an embedded edge server 140 may be deployed in the first communication network 130 to enable communications within the first communication network 130 for high time critical traffic.

[0049] The second apparatus 120 may, on one hand, serve and manage the first apparatus 110 in capillary coverage of the first communication network 130, while, on the  other hand, the second apparatus 120 is connected to a network node 150 (such as a BS) of a second communication network (or a second communication system) 155 such as a WAN or an enterprise network. The second communication network 155 may also referred to as a parent communication network or an overlay communication network of the first communication network 130. The BS 150 in the second communication network 155 may control and coordinate the first communication network 130 with other networks (not shown) to a certain extent.

[0050] The traffic between the second apparatus 120 and the network node 150 may comprise medium time critical traffic and / or non-critical traffic. In addition, the network node 150 may be connected to an edge cloud 160, and the medium time critical traffic may be transferred between the network node 150 and the edge cloud 160. The network node 150 may also be connected to a central cloud 170 for transferring the non-critical traffic.

[0051] Communications in the communication environment 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, 6G, and the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , OFDM, Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0052] It is to be understood that the number and types of apparatuses are shown in FIG. 1 for the purpose of illustration, without suggesting any limitation. The communication environment 100 may include any suitable numbers and types of devices and apparatuses. For example, more than one second apparatuses may be deployed in a subnetwork, and one of the second apparatuses may operate as a serving AP.

[0053] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the first apparatus 110 operating as a terminal device such as a UE and the second apparatus 120 operating as an AP. However, in some example embodiments,  operations described in connection with a terminal device may be implemented at an AP or other device, and operations described in connection with a network device (e.g. an AP or a BS) may be implemented at a terminal device or other device.

[0054] In the communication environment 100, the second apparatus 120 such as a subNW AP maintains two separate synchronization information such as system timings for two networks or systems. For example, the second apparatus 120 may main first synchronization information to support communications within the first communication network 130 and second synchronization information (synchronized with the second communication network 155) to support communications between the second apparatus 120 the network node 150 and communications between the second apparatus 120 and devices or apparatuses in other communication networks (such as other subNW APs) . As an example, in the example embodiments where the first communication network 130 is a subnetwork and the second communication network 155 is a WAN, the second apparatus 120 (such as an AP) may maintain first timing for intra-sun communications and maintain second timing for WAN communications.

[0055] A timing maintenance and fast synchronization mechanism may be applied for the first communication network 130. In this mechanism, an indication for at least one offset (e.g. a timing offset and / or frequency offset) between the first synchronization information for the first communication network 130 and the second synchronization information for the second communication network 155 is introduced to reduce synchronization complexity and overhead for the second apparatus 120 in the first communication network 130. Some example implementations may be described below with reference to FIGS. 3 and 4.

[0056] FIG. 3 is a signaling diagram showing an example communication process 300 between the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0057] As shown in FIG. 3, in the process 300, the second apparatus 120 transmits (305) a synchronization signal based on the first synchronization information for the first communication network 130. For example, the second apparatus 120 may transmit (305) (or broadcast) the synchronization signaling periodically, as a synchronization source for communications within the first communication network 130. The transmission (305) of the synchronization signaling may be subject to the second synchronization information  for the second communication network 155. The communications within the first communication network 130 may include data links between the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 and data links between different first apparatuses 110 (for example, via sidelink) .

[0058] Correspondingly, the first apparatus 110 receives (310) the synchronization signal from the second apparatus 120 within the first communication network 130. Based on the synchronization signal, the first apparatus 110 obtains (315) the first synchronization information for the first communication network 130. Thus, the first apparatus 110 may perform local synchronization with the first communication network 130.

[0059] Furthermore, the second apparatus 120 transmits (320) at least one offset between the first synchronization information and the second synchronization information for the second communication network 155. Correspondingly, the first apparatus 110 receives (325) the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information from the second apparatus 120.

[0060] In some example embodiments, the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information may be carried in system information such subnetwork system information (SSI) . In some example embodiments, the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information may include at least one of a timing offset or a frequency offset between the first and second synchronization information.

[0061] In some example embodiments, the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information may be carried in a data channel from the second apparatus 120 to the first apparatus 110.

[0062] In some example embodiments, the second apparatus 120 may periodically transmit (320) (or broadcast) the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information. For example, in the embodiments where the first communication network 130 is a subnetwork and the second communication network 155 is a WAN, the second apparatus 120 may broadcast a timing offset and / or a frequency offset between a Uu interference or link and an intra-subNW interference or link as a part of a subNW system information (SSI) . The timing offset may indicate a timing difference between the WAN system and the subNW system. The time offset may be in a unit of  absolute time (e.g., nano-second, micro-second, mini-second, etc. ) , or in a unit of a symbol, a slot or a frame. The timing offset may be a time difference value between two timing reference points in the two systems, respectively. The timing offset may be a time difference between the frame boundaries, slot boundaries, symbol boundaries of the two networks / systems.

[0063] The frequency offset may indicate a frequency difference between the WAN system and the subNW system. In one embodiment, the frequency offset may be a difference between central frequencies of the two systems. In another embodiment, the frequency offset may be a difference between two pre-defined frequency points of the two systems, e.g., edges of used frequency bands of the two systems. The frequency offset may be in a unit of an absolute frequency (e.g., Hz, kHz, etc. ) , or in a unit of subcarrier spacing, a physical resource block (PRB) and / or the like.

[0064] In the example embodiments the second apparatus 120 periodically transmit (320) (or broadcast) the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information, the first apparatus 110 may receive (325) the at least one offset when needed. In some example embodiments, if the first apparatus 110 has a communication demand related to the second communication network 155, the first apparatus 110 may be triggered to receive (325) the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information, for example, the SSI with the time and / or frequency offset (s) from the second apparatus 120.

[0065] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may receive (325) the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information in response to a communication from the second communication network 155 to be performed. For example, the first apparatus 110 may receive a paging signaling and / or the like from the network node 150 and / or the second apparatus 120 for building a communication connection toward the network node 150. In this case, the first apparatus 110 may receive (325) the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information.

[0066] Alternatively, or in addition, the first apparatus 110 may receive (325) the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information in response to a communication towards the second communication network 155 to be performed. For example, the first apparatus 110 itself may receive data from its application layer to be transmitted to the network node 150. In this case, the first apparatus 110 may receive (325)  the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information.

[0067] In some example embodiments, the transmission (320) of the least one offset between the first and second synchronization information from the second apparatus 120 may be triggered by a request from the first apparatus 110. For example, the first second apparatus 110 may transmit, to the second apparatus 120, a request for the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information. As a response, the second apparatus 120 may transmit (320) the least one offset between the first and second synchronization information. In this way, the transmission (320) of the least one offset between the first and second synchronization information from the second apparatus 120 to the first apparatus 110 when needed, thereby further reducing the system overhead.

[0068] Based on the least one offset between the first and second synchronization information, the first apparatus 110 may perform (330) synchronization with the second communication network 155 based on the at least one offset. For example, the first apparatus 110 may get rough synchronization information towards the second communication network 155, from the least one offset between the first and second synchronization information. The first apparatus 110 may perform finer search on a synchronization signal or signaling of the second communication network 155 based on the rough information.

[0069] In some example embodiments, in addition to the least one offset between the first and second synchronization information, the first apparatus 110 may receive at least one window for synchronization with the second communication network 155. Then, the first apparatus 110 may perform (330) the synchronization with the second communication network 155 based on the at least one window and the least one offset.

[0070] In some example embodiments, the at least one window may include at least one of a time window or a frequency window for the synchronization with the second communication network 155. The at least one window may be carried in at least one of system information such as SSI or a data channel from the second apparatus 120 to the first apparatus 110.

[0071] In some example embodiments, at least one of the at least one offset or the at least one window is received by the first apparatus 110 for a time duration. For example, the first apparatus 110 may try to receive the SSI with at least one of the at least one offset or the at least one window, from the second apparatus 120 for a certain duration. In some  example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may transmit a request for the SSI to the second apparatus 120 and then receive the SSI as a response. In some other example embodiments, the time duration and the request may be applied in a combination. The first apparatus 110 may receive the SSI with at least one of the at least one offset or the at least one window for a time duration after transmitting a request for the SSI.

[0072] FIG. 4 shows an example synchronization process 400 according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. In this example, the first communication network 130 may be a subnetwork, and the second communication network 155 may be a WAN. A subNW AP 405 may operate as an example of the second apparatus 120 in FIG. 1. A device 410 may operate as an example of the first apparatus 110 in FIG. 1. A WAN xNB 415 may operate as an example of the network node 150 in FIG. 1.

[0073] As shown in FIG. 4, in a subNW local synchronization phase 420, at 425, the subNW AP 405 transmits a periodic synchronization signal to help the device 410 to do time and / or frequency synchronization in the subNW system. At 430, based on the synchronization signal, the device 410 keeps synchronization with the subNW AP 405.

[0074] At 435, a WAN data demand comes at the device 410. Optionally, at 440, the device 410 transmits a request for subNW system information (SSI) (also referred to as an SSI request) to the subNW AP 405. The request from the device 410 may trigger on-demand SSI transmission. As shown in FIG. 4, at 445, the subNW AP 405 transmits an SSI indicating time and / or frequency offset between the WAN and the subnetwork. In addition to or instead of transmitting the SSI on-demand, the subNW AP 405 may transmit an SSI to the device 410 periodically.

[0075] Based on the time and / or frequency offset, the device 410 synchronizes to the WAN in a phase 450. In some example embodiments, the SSI may further contain a time window and / or a frequency window. The device 410 may do timing synchronization towards the WAN based on the time offset and the time window and / or do frequency synchronization towards the WAN based on the frequency offset and the frequency window.

[0076] With the time and / or frequency offset (s) , the device 410 may get rough synchronization information towards the WAN. Based on the rough information, the device 410 may perform finer search on synchronization signaling from the WAN. As shown in FIG. 4, at 455, the device 410 receives synchronization signals (e.g. SSBs) from  the WAN xNB 415. At 460, the device 410 performs low complexity synchronization.

[0077] FIG. 5 shows a flowchart of an example method 500 implemented at a first apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 500 may be described from the perspective of the first apparatus 110 in FIG. 1.

[0078] At block 510, the first apparatus 110 receives a synchronization signal from a second apparatus 120 within a first communication network 130.

[0079] At block 520, the first apparatus 110 obtains, based on the synchronization signal, first synchronization information for the first communication network 130; and

[0080] At block 530, the first apparatus 110 receives, from the second apparatus 120, at least one offset between the first synchronization information and second synchronization information for a second communication network 155.

[0081] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may transmit, to the second apparatus 120, a request for the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information. The at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information may be received from the second apparatus 120 after transmitting the request to the second apparatus 120.

[0082] In some example embodiments, the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information may be received by the first apparatus 110 in response to at least one of: a communication from the second communication network 155 to be performed, or a communication towards the second communication network 155 to be performed.

[0083] In some example embodiments, the at least one offset between the first and second synchronization information may comprise at least one of a timing offset or a frequency offset between the first and second synchronization information.
