Abstract

Some aspects of this disclosure provide approaches for identifying whether an artificial intelligence or machine learning (AI / ML) functionality should be considered active in the context of aperiodic channel state information (CSI) reporting for beam prediction. Some aspects more specifically provide identification of whether an AI / ML functionality should be considered active before an aperiodic CSI report is triggered. In some examples, a UE identifies whether the AI / ML functionality associated with the CSI report is considered active during a time interval during which a CPU associated with the CSI report is not considered to be occupied. For example, this may be based on a UE capability or preference. As another example, this may be based on a characteristic such as an AI / ML functionality identifier or a configuration.

Description

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE OR MACHINE LEARNING OCCUPATION FOR APERIODIC CHANNEL STATE INFORMATION BASED TEMPORAL BEAM PREDICTION FEEDBACK

[0001] FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0002] Aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication and specifically relate to techniques, apparatuses, and methods associated with artificial intelligence or machine learning occupation for aperiodic channel state information based temporal beam prediction feedback.BACKGROUND

[0003] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various services that may include carrying voice, text, messaging, video, data, and / or other traffic. The services may include unicast, multicast, and / or broadcast services, among other examples. Typical wireless communication systems may employ multiple-access radio access technologies (RATs) capable of supporting communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (for example, time domain resources, frequency domain resources, spatial domain resources, and / or device transmit power, among other examples) . Examples of such multiple-access RATs include code division multiple access (CDMA) systems, time division multiple access (TDMA) systems, frequency division multiple access (FDMA) systems, orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems, single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) systems, and time division synchronous code division multiple access (TD-SCDMA) systems.

[0004] The above multiple-access RATs have been adopted in various telecommunication standards to provide common protocols that enable different wireless communication devices to communicate on a municipal, national, regional, or global level. An example telecommunication standard is New Radio (NR) . NR, which may also be referred to as 5G, is part of a continuous mobile broadband evolution promulgated by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) . NR (and other mobile broadband evolutions beyond NR) may be designed to better support Internet of things (IoT) and reduced capability device deployments, industrial connectivity, millimeter wave (mmWave) expansion, licensed and unlicensed spectrum access, non-terrestrial network (NTN) deployment, sidelink and other device-to-device direct  communication technologies (for example, cellular vehicle-to-everything (CV2X) communication) , massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) , disaggregated network architectures and network topology expansions, multiple-subscriber implementations, high-precision positioning, and / or radio frequency (RF) sensing, among other examples. As the demand for mobile broadband access continues to increase, further improvements in NR may be implemented, and other radio access technologies such as 6G may be introduced, to further advance mobile broadband evolution.

[0005] A user equipment may provide channel state information (CSI) to inform a network node, such as a gNB, of a channel characteristic associated with the UE, such as a measurement value, a best beam, a best set of beams, or the like. CSI feedback can also be used to provide predicted channel characteristics, as may be generated using an artificial intelligence or machine learning functionality. CSI reporting can be periodic (in which CSI reports are transmitted according to a periodicity) , aperiodic (in which CSI reports are triggered by a downlink control information (DCI) message indicating an uplink resource for the CSI report) , or semi-persistent (in which CSI reporting can be dynamically or semi-statically activated or deactivated) .

[0006] A number of CSI processing units (CPUs) may be used to impose limits on how aperiodic CSI reporting can be configured. For example, a UE may indicate support for a number (NCPU) of simultaneous CSI calculations. A UE that supports NCPU simultaneous CSI calculations may be said to support NCPU CPUs for processing CSI reports across all configured cells of the UE. The number of supported CPUs / simultaneous CSI calculations may provide limits on how many CSI calculations the UE can be configured to perform at a given time. For example, the UE may not consider the one or more CPUs to be occupied until a trigger for aperiodic CSI reporting has been received, and may not consider the one or more CPUs to be occupied after the CSI report has been transmitted.

[0007] A UE or network node can use an artificial intelligence or machine learning (AI / ML) functionality to perform certain tasks. An AI / ML functionality may incorporate an AI / ML model such as an artificial neural network (ANN) . One example of a use case for an AI / ML functionality is AI / ML based beam management. Generally, beam management may include measurement and reporting of the strength or quality of various beams to facilitate operations such as handover, updating of a UE or network’s active beam, or cell selection. These measurements may involve the UE tuning to a  frequency associated with a measurement, forming a beam associated with the measurement, calculating a metric, and reporting the metric. Each of these operations may involve some amount of overhead at the UE. AI / ML based beam management may assist with reducing these forms of overhead. For example, AI / ML based beam management may enable overhead and latency reduction (by reducing the number of beams or reference signals that need to be measured) and beam selection accuracy improvement (by providing additional metrics or measurement values to facilitate accurate beam selection, such as by providing beam metrics for additional beams that were not measured) .

[0008] As mentioned, an AI / ML functionality may generate beam predictions, and the UE may report CSI based on the beam predictions. For example, the CSI may indicate a predicted measurement value of the beam predictions. It may be beneficial to identify times at which the AI / ML functionality is active or considered active. For example, this may assist in balancing capabilities of the UE against the computational resources used when an AI / ML functionality is active.

[0009] Beam prediction using AI / ML functionalities may be associated with various levels of complexity and different activity profiles of the AI / ML functionality, depending on the type of AI / ML functionality used. For example, if a UE is requested or configured to provide beam prediction results through periodic or semi-persistent CSI reports, the associated AI / ML functionalities may be considered to be activated when the related CPUs are considered to be occupied. Aperiodic CSI reporting may introduce complexity for AI / ML functionality activation relative to periodic or semi-persistent CSI reporting, particularly when the CSI report has not been triggered.SUMMARY

[0036] A UE or network node can use an artificial intelligence or machine learning (AI / ML) functionality to perform certain tasks.

[0037] An AI / ML functionality may enable the UE to predict one or more inferences or predictions according to data input to the AI / ML functionality. The input data may include, for example, a measurement on a beam (referred to as a Set B beam) , which may be a historical measurement or a contemporaneous (such as instantaneous) measurement. The one or more inferences or predictions may relate to a beam prediction result regarding a beam referred to as a Set A beam. For example, Set A may be for downlink beam prediction and Set B may be for downlink beam measurement. In some examples, the UE may perform spatial-domain beam prediction for Set A beams based on measurement results (such as current measurement results or instantaneous measurement results) for Set B beams. For example, Set B’s beams may be a subset of Set A’s beams. Additionally, or alternatively, the UE may perform time-domain beam prediction for Set A beams based on historical measurement results for Set B beams. Different UEs and network nodes may have different capabilities or may collaborate at different levels. These differences in capability or level of collaboration may lead to  differences in AI / ML approaches, such as differences in AI / ML models used in various scenarios, different signaling procedures, or the like.

[0038] A UE may report channel state information (CSI) to inform a network node, such as a gNB, of a channel characteristic at the UE. The CSI may indicate the channel characteristic in the form of a measurement value, a selected beam or reference signal, a set of selected beams or reference signals, or the like. CSI can also be used to report the beam prediction results or predicted channel characteristics, as may be output by an AI / ML functionality.

[0039] A number of CSI processing units (CPUs) may be used to impose limits on how aperiodic CSI reporting can be configured.

[0040] As mentioned, an AI / ML functionality may generate beam predictions, and the UE may report CSI based on the beam predictions. For example, the CSI may indicate a predicted measurement value of the beam predictions. It may be beneficial to identify times at which the AI / ML functionality is active or considered active. For example, this may assist in balancing capabilities of the UE against the computational resources used when an AI / ML functionality is active.

[0041] Beam prediction using AI / ML functionalities may be associated with various levels of complexity and different activity profiles of the AI / ML functionality, depending on the type of AI / ML functionality used. For example, if a UE is requested or configured to provide beam prediction results through periodic or semi-persistent CSI reports, the associated AI / ML functionalities may be considered to be activated when the related CPUs are considered to be occupied. Aperiodic CSI reporting may introduce  complexity for AI / ML functionality activation relative to periodic or semi-persistent CSI reporting, particularly when the CSI report has not been triggered. For example, if the AI / ML functionality only uses instantaneous Set B beam measurements, the AI / ML functionality does not need to be activated (or considered active) when the corresponding aperiodic CSI report has not been triggered, since the AI / ML functionality does not process beam measurements and no additional buffering or storage overhead is incurred. However, in some examples, the AI / ML functionality uses a time series of Set B beam measurements for AI / ML inference (especially when such Set-B beam measurements are based on synchronization signal blocks (SSBs) or periodic or semi-persistent CSI reference signals (RSs) ) . In these cases, it may be unclear whether the AI / ML functionalities should be considered as active, or whether there are additional complexities / efforts required for the UE, as compared to legacy aperiodic CSI reports. For example, for a recurrent neural network (RNN) based AI / ML functionality, even if the corresponding aperiodic CSI report has not been triggered, the AI / ML functionality may still operate based on most recent measurement results, such as at each measurement cycle. As another example, if a convolutional neural network (CNN) based or transformer-based architecture is used, even if the corresponding aperiodic CSI report has not been triggered, raw measurement results with regard to the most recent N measurement occasions may be buffered (while the associated AI / ML functionality can be running or not running) , in case of real-time triggering of the aperiodic CSI report. In this case, there are additional UE buffering efforts carried out, as compared to conventional aperiodic CSI reporting, even if the associated AI / ML functionality is not running.

[0042] Aspects of the present disclosure provide approaches for identifying whether an AI / ML functionality should be considered active in the context of aperiodic CSI reporting for beam prediction. Some aspects more specifically provide identification of whether an AI / ML functionality should be considered active before an aperiodic CSI report is triggered. For example, the UE may identify a number of AI / ML computational resource units in accordance with whether the AI / ML functionality is considered active before the aperiodic CSI report is triggered.

[0043] In some aspects, a UE may report an indication of a capability regarding whether an AI / ML functionality should be considered active during a first time interval (that is, a time interval in which CPUs associated with the CSI report are not considered occupied) . For example, this capability may be specific to a type of aperiodic CSI report or may be specific to an AI / ML functionality associated with the AP CSI report. In some aspects, the UE may provide a dynamic indication of whether an AI / ML functionality should be considered active.

[0044] In some aspects, the indication of the capability may relate to buffering of measurement results (that is, an input to an AI / ML functionality) . For example, the UE may report a number of measurement occasions associated with buffering measurement results, such as a number of measurement occasions for which the UE buffers measurement results in association with the AI / ML functionality. In this case, the UE may identify the number of AI / ML computational units in accordance with the number of measurement occasions.

[0045] In some aspects, the UE may identify whether the AI / ML functionality is considered active using a characteristic associated with the AI / ML functionality or the AP CSI report. For example, a configuration or a wireless communication specification may indicate, for an identifier of an AI / ML functionality, whether the AI / ML functionality should be considered active. In some aspects, the configuration or the wireless communication specification may indicate a number of measurement occasions associated with buffering measurement results, such as a number of measurement occasions for which the UE buffers measurement results in association with the AI / ML functionality. In some aspects, a CPU may be considered to be occupied when an AI / ML functionality is considered occupied.

[0046] Aspects of the present disclosure may be used to realize one or more of the following potential advantages.

[0047] In some aspects, by identifying a number of AI / ML computational resource units in accordance with whether an AI / ML functionality is considered active before an aperiodic CSI report is triggered, the UE can be configured with or can activate an appropriate number of AI / ML functionalities or type of AI / ML functionality, thereby improving resource utilization at the UE and efficiency of configuring the UE.

[0048] By reporting an indication of a capability regarding whether an AI / ML functionality should be considered active during the first time interval, the capabilities of the UE can be taken into account for the purpose of configuring or activating AI / ML functionalities. By making this capability specific to a type of aperiodic CSI report or an AI / ML functionality associated with the AP CSI report, differences in resource utilization at the UE for different aperiodic CSI reports or AI / ML functionalities can be taken into account. By providing a dynamic indication of whether an AI / ML functionality should be considered active during the first time interval, the UE can adapt AI / ML functionality usage to changing network conditions or resource availability at the UE.

[0049] By providing an indication of a capability relating to buffering of measurement results (that is, an input to an AI / ML functionality) , a processing load associated with buffering these measurement results can be taken into account for certain types of AI / ML functionality.

[0050] By identifying whether the AI / ML functionality is considered active using a characteristic associated with the AI / ML functionality or the AP CSI report, overhead may be reduced relative to dynamic signaling indicating whether the AI / ML functionality should be considered active or indicating a number of AI / ML computational resource units associated with the AI / ML functionality.

[0051] By considering a CPU to be occupied during the first time interval when an AI / ML functionality is considered occupied during the first time interval, definitions of when CPUs and AI / ML computational resource units are considered to be occupied are simplified.

[0052] Multiple-access radio access technologies (RATs) have been adopted in various telecommunication standards to provide common protocols that enable wireless communication devices to communicate on a municipal, enterprise, national, regional, or global level. For example, 5G New Radio (NR) is part of a continuous mobile broadband evolution promulgated by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) . 5G NR supports various technologies and use cases including enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) , ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) , massive machine-type communication (mMTC) , millimeter wave (mmWave) technology, beamforming, network slicing, edge computing, Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity and management, and network function virtualization (NFV) .

[0053] As the demand for broadband access increases and as technologies supported by wireless communication networks evolve, further technological improvements may be adopted in or implemented for 5G NR or future RATs, such as 6G, to further advance the evolution of wireless communication for a wide variety of existing and new use cases and applications. Such technological improvements may be associated with new frequency band expansion, licensed and unlicensed spectrum access, overlapping spectrum use, small cell deployments, non-terrestrial network (NTN) deployments, disaggregated network architectures and network topology expansion, device aggregation, advanced duplex communication, sidelink and other device-to-device direct communication, IoT (including passive or ambient IoT) networks, reduced capability (RedCap) UE functionality, industrial connectivity, multiple-subscriber implementations, high-precision positioning, radio frequency (RF) sensing, and / or artificial intelligence or machine learning (AI / ML) , among other examples. These technological improvements may support use cases such as wireless backhauls, wireless data centers, extended reality (XR) and metaverse applications, meta services for supporting vehicle connectivity, holographic and mixed reality communication, autonomous and collaborative robots, vehicle platooning and cooperative maneuvering, sensing networks, gesture monitoring, human-brain interfacing, digital twin applications, asset management, and universal coverage applications using non-terrestrial and / or aerial platforms, among other examples. The methods, operations, apparatuses, and techniques described herein may enable one or more of the foregoing technologies and / or support one or more of the foregoing use cases.

[0054] Figure 1 is a diagram illustrating an example of a wireless communication network 100 in accordance with the present disclosure. The wireless communication network 100 may be or may include elements of a 5G (or NR) network or a 6G network, among other examples. The wireless communication network 100 may include multiple network nodes 110, shown as a network node (NN) 110a, a network node 110b, a network node 110c, and a network node 110d. The network nodes 110 may support communications with multiple UEs 120, shown as a UE 120a, a UE 120b, a UE 120c, a UE 120d, and a UE 120e.

[0055] The network nodes 110 and the UEs 120 of the wireless communication network 100 may communicate using the electromagnetic spectrum, which may be subdivided by frequency or wavelength into various classes, bands, carriers, and / or channels. For example, devices of the wireless communication network 100 may  communicate using one or more operating bands. In some aspects, multiple wireless communication networks 100 may be deployed in a given geographic area. Each wireless communication network 100 may support a particular RAT (which may also be referred to as an air interface) and may operate on one or more carrier frequencies in one or more frequency ranges. Examples of RATs include a 4G RAT, a 5G / NR RAT, and / or a 6G RAT, among other examples. In some examples, when multiple RATs are deployed in a given geographic area, each RAT in the geographic area may operate on different frequencies to avoid interference with one another.

[0056] Various operating bands have been defined as frequency range designations FR1 (410 MHz through 7.125 GHz) , FR2 (24.25 GHz through 52.6 GHz) , FR3 (7.125 GHz through 24.25 GHz) , FR4a or FR4-1 (52.6 GHz through 71 GHz) , FR4 (52.6 GHz through 114.25 GHz) , and FR5 (114.25 GHz through 300 GHz) . Although a portion of FR1 is greater than 6 GHz, FR1 is often referred to (interchangeably) as a “Sub-6 GHz” band in some documents and articles. Similarly, FR2 is often referred to (interchangeably) as a “millimeter wave” band in some documents and articles, despite being different than the extremely high frequency (EHF) band (30 GHz through 300 GHz) , which is identified by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) as a “millimeter wave” band. The frequencies between FR1 and FR2 are often referred to as mid-band frequencies, which include FR3. Frequency bands falling within FR3 may inherit FR1 characteristics or FR2 characteristics, and thus may effectively extend features of FR1 or FR2 into mid-band frequencies. Thus, “sub-6 GHz, ” if used herein, may broadly refer to frequencies that are less than 6 GHz, that are within FR1, and / or that are included in mid-band frequencies. Similarly, the term “millimeter wave, ” if used herein, may broadly refer to frequencies that are included in mid-band frequencies, that are within FR2, FR4, FR4-a or FR4-1, or FR5, and / or that are within the EHF band. Higher frequency bands may extend 5G NR operation, 6G operation, and / or other RATs beyond 52.6 GHz. For example, each of FR4a, FR4-1, FR4, and FR5 falls within the EHF band. In some examples, the wireless communication network 100 may implement dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) , in which multiple RATs (for example, 4G / LTE and 5G / NR) are implemented with dynamic bandwidth allocation (for example, based on user demand) in a single frequency band. It is contemplated that the frequencies included in these operating bands (for example, FR1, FR2, FR3, FR4, FR4-a, FR4-1, and / or FR5) may be modified, and techniques described herein may be applicable to those modified frequency ranges.

[0057] A network node 110 may include one or more devices, components, or systems that enable communication between a UE 120 and one or more devices, components, or systems of the wireless communication network 100. A network node 110 may be, may include, or may also be referred to as an NR network node, a 5G network node, a 6G network node, a Node B, an eNB, a gNB, an access point (AP) , a transmission reception point (TRP) , a mobility element, a core, a network entity, a network element, a network equipment, and / or another type of device, component, or system included in a radio access network (RAN) .

[0058] A network node 110 may be implemented as a single physical node (for example, a single physical structure) or may be implemented as two or more physical nodes (for example, two or more distinct physical structures) . For example, a network node 110 may be a device or system that implements part of a radio protocol stack, a device or system that implements a full radio protocol stack (such as a full gNB protocol stack) , or a collection of devices or systems that collectively implement the full radio protocol stack. For example, and as shown, a network node 110 may be an aggregated network node (having an aggregated architecture) , meaning that the network node 110 may implement a full radio protocol stack that is physically and logically integrated within a single node (for example, a single physical structure) in the wireless communication network 100. For example, an aggregated network node 110 may consist of a single standalone base station or a single TRP that uses a full radio protocol stack to enable or facilitate communication between a UE 120 and a core network of the wireless communication network 100.

[0059] Alternatively, and as also shown, a network node 110 may be a disaggregated network node (sometimes referred to as a disaggregated base station) , meaning that the network node 110 may implement a radio protocol stack that is physically distributed and / or logically distributed among two or more nodes in the same geographic location or in different geographic locations. For example, a disaggregated network node may have a disaggregated architecture. In some deployments, disaggregated network nodes 110 may be used in an integrated access and backhaul (IAB) network, in an open radio access network (O-RAN) (such as a network configuration in compliance with the O-RAN Alliance) , or in a virtualized radio access network (vRAN) , also known as a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) , to facilitate scaling by separating base station functionality into multiple units that can be individually deployed.

[0060] The network nodes 110 of the wireless communication network 100 may include one or more central units (CUs) , one or more distributed units (DUs) , and / or one or more radio units (RUs) . A CU may host one or more higher layer control functions, such as radio resource control (RRC) functions, packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) functions, and / or service data adaptation protocol (SDAP) functions, among other examples. A DU may host one or more of a radio link control (RLC) layer, a medium access control (MAC) layer, and / or one or more higher physical (PHY) layers depending, at least in part, on a functional split, such as a functional split defined by the 3GPP. In some examples, a DU also may host one or more lower PHY layer functions, such as a fast Fourier transform (FFT) , an inverse FFT (iFFT) , beamforming, physical random access channel (PRACH) extraction and filtering, and / or scheduling of resources for one or more UEs 120, among other examples. An RU may host RF processing functions or lower PHY layer functions, such as an FFT, an iFFT, beamforming, or PRACH extraction and filtering, among other examples, according to a functional split, such as a lower layer functional split. In such an architecture, each RU can be operated to handle over the air (OTA) communication with one or more UEs 120.

[0061] In some aspects, a single network node 110 may include a combination of one or more CUs, one or more DUs, and / or one or more RUs. Additionally or alternatively, a network node 110 may include one or more Near-Real Time (Near-RT) RAN Intelligent Controllers (RICs) and / or one or more Non-Real Time (Non-RT) RICs. In some examples, a CU, a DU, and / or an RU may be implemented as a virtual unit, such as a virtual central unit (VCU) , a virtual distributed unit (VDU) , or a virtual radio unit (VRU) , among other examples. A virtual unit may be implemented as a virtual network function, such as associated with a cloud deployment.

[0062] Some network nodes 110 (for example, a base station, an RU, or a TRP) may provide communication coverage for a particular geographic area. In the 3GPP, the term “cell” can refer to a coverage area of a network node 110 or to a network node 110 itself, depending on the context in which the term is used. A network node 110 may support one or multiple (for example, three) cells. In some examples, a network node 110 may provide communication coverage for a macro cell, a pico cell, a femto cell, or another type of cell. A macro cell may cover a relatively large geographic area (for example, several kilometers in radius) and may allow unrestricted access by UEs 120 with service subscriptions. A pico cell may cover a relatively small geographic area and  may allow unrestricted access by UEs 120 with service subscriptions. A femto cell may cover a relatively small geographic area (for example, a home) and may allow restricted access by UEs 120 having association with the femto cell (for example, UEs 120 in a closed subscriber group (CSG) ) . A network node 110 for a macro cell may be referred to as a macro network node. A network node 110 for a pico cell may be referred to as a pico network node. A network node 110 for a femto cell may be referred to as a femto network node or an in-home network node.

[0063] The wireless communication network 100 may be a heterogeneous network that includes network nodes 110 of different types, such as macro network nodes, pico network nodes, femto network nodes, relay network nodes, aggregated network nodes, and / or disaggregated network nodes, among other examples. In the example shown in Figure 1, the network node 110a may be a macro network node for a macro cell 130a, the network node 110b may be a pico network node for a pico cell 130b, and the network node 110c may be a femto network node for a femto cell 130c. Various different types of network nodes 110 may generally transmit at different power levels, serve different coverage areas, and / or have different impacts on interference in the wireless communication network 100 than other types of network nodes 110. For example, macro network nodes may have a high transmit power level (for example, 5 to 40 watts) , whereas pico network nodes, femto network nodes, and relay network nodes may have lower transmit power levels (for example, 0.1 to 2 watts) .

[0064] In some examples, a network node 110 may be, may include, or may operate as an RU, a TRP, or a base station that communicates with one or more UEs 120 via a radio access link (which may be referred to as a “Uu” link) . The radio access link may include a downlink and an uplink. “Downlink” (or “DL” ) refers to a communication direction from a network node 110 to a UE 120, and “uplink” (or “UL” ) refers to a communication direction from a UE 120 to a network node 110.

[0065] In some examples, any network node 110 that relays communications may be referred to as a relay network node, a relay station, or simply as a relay. A relay may receive a transmission of a communication from an upstream station (for example, another network node 110 or a UE 120) and transmit the communication to a downstream station (for example, a UE 120 or another network node 110) . In this case, the wireless communication network 100 may include or be referred to as a “multi-hop network. ” In the example shown in Figure 1, the network node 110d (for example, a relay network node) may communicate with the network node 110a (for example, a  macro network node) and the UE 120d in order to facilitate communication between the network node 110a and the UE 120d. Additionally or alternatively, a UE 120 may be or may operate as a relay station that can relay transmissions to or from other UEs 120. A UE 120 that relays communications may be referred to as a UE relay or a relay UE, among other examples.

[0066] The UEs 120 may be physically dispersed throughout the wireless communication network 100, and each UE 120 may be stationary or mobile. A UE 120 may be, may include, or may be included in an access terminal, another terminal, a mobile station, or a subscriber unit. A UE 120 may be, include, or be coupled with a cellular phone (for example, a smart phone) , a personal digital assistant (PDA) , a wireless modem, a wireless communication device, a handheld device, a laptop computer, a cordless phone, a wireless local loop (WLL) station, a tablet, a camera, a gaming device, a netbook, a smartbook, an ultrabook, a medical device, a biometric device, a wearable device (for example, a smart watch, smart clothing, smart glasses, a smart wristband, and / or smart jewelry, such as a smart ring or a smart bracelet) , an entertainment device (for example, a music device, a video device, and / or a satellite radio) , an XR device, a vehicular component or sensor, a smart meter or sensor, industrial manufacturing equipment, a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) device (such as a Global Positioning System device or another type of positioning device) , a UE function of a network node, and / or any other suitable device or function that may communicate via a wireless medium.

[0067] A UE 120 and / or a network node 110 may include one or more chips, system-on-chips (SoCs) , chipsets, packages, or devices that individually or collectively constitute or comprise a processing system. The processing system includes processor (or “processing” ) circuitry in the form of one or multiple processors, microprocessors, processing units (such as central processing units, graphics processing units (GPUs) , neural processing units (NPUs) and / or digital signal processors (DSPs) ) , processing blocks, application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC) , programmable logic devices (PLDs) (such as field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) ) , or other discrete gate or transistor logic or circuitry (all of which may be generally referred to herein individually as “processors” or collectively as “the processor” or “the processor circuitry” ) . One or more of the processors may be individually or collectively configurable or configured to perform various functions or operations described herein. A group of processors collectively configurable or configured to perform a set of  functions may include a first processor configurable or configured to perform a first function of the set and a second processor configurable or configured to perform a second function of the set, or may include the group of processors all being configured or configurable to perform the set of functions.

[0068] The processing system may further include memory circuitry in the form of one or more memory devices, memory blocks, memory elements or other discrete gate or transistor logic or circuitry, each of which may include tangible storage media such as random-access memory (RAM) or read-only memory (ROM) , or combinations thereof (all of which may be generally referred to herein individually as “memories” or collectively as “the memory” or “the memory circuitry” ) . One or more of the memories may be coupled (for example, operatively coupled, communicatively coupled, electronically coupled, or electrically coupled) with one or more of the processors and may individually or collectively store processor-executable code (such as software) that, when executed by one or more of the processors, may configure one or more of the processors to perform various functions or operations described herein. Additionally or alternatively, in some examples, one or more of the processors may be preconfigured to perform various functions or operations described herein without requiring configuration by software. The processing system may further include or be coupled with one or more modems (such as a Wi-Fi (for example, IEEE compliant) modem or a cellular (for example, 3GPP 4G LTE, 5G, or 6G compliant) modem) . In some implementations, one or more processors of the processing system include or implement one or more of the modems. The processing system may further include or be coupled with multiple radios (collectively “the radio” ) , multiple RF chains, or multiple transceivers, each of which may in turn be coupled with one or more of multiple antennas. In some implementations, one or more processors of the processing system include or implement one or more of the radios, RF chains or transceivers. The UE 120 may include or may be included in a housing that houses components associated with the UE 120 including the processing system.

[0095] In some aspects, the UE 120 includes means for receiving a configuration of an AP CSI report, wherein a measurement resource associated with the AP CSI report is associated with a synchronization signal block or a periodic or semi-persistent reference signal, and wherein the AP CSI report is associated with a channel characteristic associated with an AI / ML functionality; means for identifying, for a first time interval outside of a second time interval that occurs between a trigger for the AP CSI report and a transmission of the AP CSI report, a number of AI / ML computational resource units, wherein identifying the number of AI / ML computational resource units is in accordance with whether the AI / ML functionality is considered active in the first time interval; and / or means for transmitting the AP CSI report in accordance with the number of AI / ML computational resource units. The means for the UE 120 to perform operations described herein may include, for example, one or more of communication manager 140, antenna 252, modem 254, MIMO detector 256, receive processor 258, transmit processor 264, TX MIMO processor 266, controller / processor 280, memory 320, processor 310, RF circuitry 342, antenna 346, or memory 282.

[0096] In some aspects, the network node 110 includes means for transmitting, for a UE) , a configuration of an AP CSI report, wherein a measurement resource associated with the AP CSI report is associated with a synchronization signal block or a periodic or semi-persistent reference signal, and wherein the AP CSI report is associated with a channel characteristic associated with an AI / ML functionality; means for identifying,  for a first time interval outside of a second time interval that occurs between a trigger for the AP CSI report and a transmission of the AP CSI report, a number of AI / ML computational resource units, wherein identifying the number of AI / ML computational resource units is in accordance with whether the AI / ML functionality is considered active in the first time interval; and / or means for obtaining the AP CSI report in accordance with the number of AI / ML computational resource units. The means for the network node to perform operations described herein may include, for example, one or more of communication manager 150, transmit processor 214, TX MIMO processor 216, modem 232, antenna 234, MIMO detector 236, receive processor 238, controller / processor 240, memory 242, or scheduler 246.

[0097] Figure 4 is a diagram illustrating an example 400 of an AI / ML based beam management, in accordance with the present disclosure. As shown in Figure 4, an AI / ML model 410 (for example, AI / ML model 330) may be deployed at or on a UE 120 (for example, first wireless communication device 302) . For example, a model inference host (such as a model inference host) may be deployed at, or on, a UE 120. The AI / ML model 410 may enable the UE 120 to identify one or more inferences or predictions based on data input to the AI / ML model 410. “Beam management” , as described in connection with Figure 4, may include beam prediction in the time and / or spatial domains for overhead and latency reduction and beam selection accuracy improvement. One or more use cases for beam management may be supported, as described below. Furthermore, description of the AI / ML model 410 should be understood to disclose an AI / ML functionality that is or uses the AI / ML model.

[0098] For example, as shown by reference number 415, an input to the AI / ML model 410 may include measurements associated with a first set of beams. For example, a network node 110 may transmit one or more signals using respective beams from the first set of beams. The UE 120 may perform measurements (for example, L1 RSRP measurements or other measurements) of the first set of beams to obtain a first set of measurements. For example, each beam, from the first set of beams, may be associated with one or more measurements performed by the UE 120. The UE 120 may input the first set of measurements (for example, L1 RSRP measurement values) into the AI / ML model 410 along with information associated with the first set of beams and / or a second set of beams, such as a beam direction (for example, spatial direction) , beam width, beam shape, and / or other characteristics of the respective beams from the first set of beams and / or the second set of beams.

[0099] As shown by reference number 420, the AI / ML model 410 may output one or more predictions. The one or more predictions may include predicted measurement values (for example, predicted L1 RSRP measurement values) associated with the second set of beams. This may reduce a quantity of beam measurements that are performed by the UE 120, thereby conversing power of the UE 120 and / or network resources that would have otherwise been used to measure all beams included in the first set of beams and the second set of beams. This type of prediction may be referred to as a codebook based spatial domain selection or prediction.

[0100] As another example, an output of the AI / ML model 410 may include a point-direction, an angle of departure (AoD) , and / or an angle of arrival (AoA) of a beam included in the second set of beams. This type of prediction may be referred to as a non-codebook based spatial domain selection or prediction. As another example, multiple measurement report or values, collected at different points in time, may be input to the AI / ML model 410. This may enable the AI / ML model 410 to output codebook based and / or non-codebook based predictions for a measurement value, an AoD, and / or an AoA, among other examples, of a beam at a future time. The output (s) of the AI / ML model 410, as described herein, may facilitate initial access procedures, secondary cell group (SCG) setup procedures, beam refinement procedures (for example, a P2 beam management procedure or a P3 beam management procedure) , link quality or interference adaptation procedure, beam failure and / or beam blockage predictions, and / or radio link failure predictions, among other examples.

[0101] In some examples, the first set of beams may be referred to as Set B beams and the second set of beams may be referred to as Set A beams. Thus, Set A may be for downlink beam prediction and Set B may be for downlink beam measurement. In some examples, the first set of beams (for example, the Set B beams) may be a subset of the second set of beams (for example, the Set A beams) . In some other examples, the first set of beams and the second set of beams may be different beams and / or may be mutually exclusive sets. For example, the first set of beams (for example, the Set B beams) may include wide beams (for example, unrefined beams or beams having a beam width that satisfies a first threshold) and the second set of beams (for example, the Set A beams) may include narrow beams (for example, refined beams or beams having a beam width that satisfies a second threshold) . In one example, the AI / ML model 410 may perform spatial-domain beam predictions for beams included in the Set A beams based on measurement results of beams included in the Set B beams (sometimes  referred to as beam management (BM) Case 1) . As another example, the AI / ML model 410 may perform temporal beam prediction for beams included in the Set A beams based on historic measurement results of beams included in the Set B beams (sometimes referred to as BM Case 2) .

[0102] In some examples, the UE 120 may transmit a CSI report based at least in part on a beam prediction. For example, the CSI report may be used to provide beam prediction results of the AI / ML model 410. The AI / ML model 410 may be any of various types of AI / ML model, or a combination of multiple types of AI / ML model. For example, the AI / ML model 410 may comprise a recurrent neural network (RNN) model, such as a long short-term memory (LSTM) model. An RNN is a type of neural network that may handle sequential data by maintaining a hidden state that captures information regarding previous inputs in the sequential data. The RNN may update the hidden state at each iteration based on an input of the current iteration and a previous hidden state. An LSTM model may additionally incorporate memory cells which can selectively remember or forget information over the course of a sequence. As another example, the AI / ML model 410 may comprise a convolutional neural network (CNN) model, such as a transformer-based model. A transformer ANN structure makes use of attention mechanisms that may enable the model to process input sequences in a parallel and efficient manner. An attention mechanism allows the model to focus on different parts of the input sequence at different times. Attention mechanisms may be implemented using a series of layers known as attention layers to compute weighted sums of input features based on a similarity between different elements of the input sequence. A transformer ANN structure may include a series of feedforward ANN layers whose configurations may change in response to identifying non-linear relationships between the input and output sequences, which may also be referred to as a process of “learning” by the ANN layers. The output of a transformer ANN structure may be obtained by applying a linear transformation to the output of a final attention layer. A transformer ANN structure may be of particular use for tasks that involve sequence modeling, or other like processing.

[0103] As indicated above, Figure 4 is provided as an example. Other examples may differ from what is described with regard to Figure 4.

[0104] Figure 5 is a diagram illustrating an example 500 of a timeline for triggering and reporting aperiodic CSI feedback, in accordance with the present disclosure. Example 500 shows transmissions and receptions by a UE, such as UE 120 or wireless  communication device 302. For example, in example 500, the UE may communicate with a network node (such as network node 110) .

[0105] As shown, the UE may receive a CSI report configuration 510. The CSI report configuration 510 may configure an aperiodic CSI report, which may facilitate reporting, by the UE, of beam prediction results. The CSI report configuration 510 may be transmitted via radio resource control (RRC) signaling, and may comprise, for example, a CSI-AssociatedReportConfigInfo parameter. In some aspects, the CSI report configuration 510 may indicate one or more measurement resources, such as a channel measurement resource (CMR) , an interference measurement resource (IMR) , or a combination thereof. For example, the one or more measurement resources may correspond to Set B beams. In some aspects, the one or more measurement resources may correspond to synchronization signal blocks (SSBs) or CSI reference signals (CSI-RSs) (such as periodic CSI-RSs or semi-persistent CSI-RSs) .

[0106] A first time interval 520 illustrates a time between the UE being configured with the CSI report configuration 510, and the UE receiving a trigger 530 for an aperiodic CSI report. For example, the trigger 530 may comprise downlink control information (DCI) that indicates to generate and / or transmit CSI feedback in a CSI report. In some aspects, the trigger 530 may indicate the CSI report configuration 510 or a measurement resource configured by the CSI report configuration 510. The first time interval 520 may end at an end of a first symbol after the trigger 530 is received. In the first time interval 520, Set B beams (such as CMRs and / or IMRs configured on SSBs or periodic (P) or semi-persistent (SP) CSI-RSs) may remain measurable irrespective of whether an AI / ML functionality is active in the first time interval 520.

[0107] A second time interval 540 illustrates a time between the UE receiving the trigger 530 and the UE transmitting an aperiodic CSI report 550 associated with (such as in response to) the trigger 530. For example, the second time interval 540 may start when (such as in a first symbol after) the UE receives the trigger 530, and may end at a last symbol of a physical uplink shared channel carrying the CSI report 550. A third time interval 560 occurs after transmitting the CSI report 550, and may continue until the UE receives another trigger 530, which is not illustrated in Figure 5 (at which point another second time interval 540 may occur) .

[0108] A number of CSI processing units (CPUs) may be used to impose limits on how aperiodic CSI reporting can be configured. In example 500, the UE may consider one or more CPUs to be occupied in connection with the trigger 530 or the CSI report 550 during the second time interval 540 and not during the first time interval 520 or the third time interval 560. For example, the UE may not consider the one or more CPUs to be occupied until the trigger 530 has been received, and may not consider the one or more CPUs to be occupied after the CSI report 550 has been transmitted.

[0109] As mentioned, an AI / ML functionality (such as an AI functionality incorporating an AI / ML model 330 or AI / ML model 410) may generate beam predictions, and the UE may report CSI (such as in the CSI report 550) based on the beam predictions. For example, the CSI may indicate a predicted measurement value of the beam predictions. It may be beneficial to identify times at which the AI / ML functionality is active or considered active. For example, this may assist in balancing capabilities of the UE against the computational resources used when an AI / ML functionality is active.

[0110] Beam prediction using AI / ML functionalities may be associated with various levels of complexity and different activity profiles of the AI / ML functionality, depending on the type of AI / ML functionality used. For example, if a UE is requested or configured to provide beam prediction results through periodic or semi-persistent CSI reports, the associated AI / ML functionalities may be considered to be activated when the related CPUs are considered to be occupied. Aperiodic CSI reporting, as described with regard to Figure 5, may introduce complexity for AI / ML functionality activation relative to periodic or semi-persistent CSI reporting, particularly when the CSI report 550 has not been triggered. For example, if the AI / ML functionality only uses instantaneous Set B beam measurements, the AI / ML functionality does not need to be activated (or considered active) when the corresponding aperiodic CSI report 550 has not been triggered (as in the first time interval 520) , since the AI / ML functionality does not process beam measurements in the first time interval 520 and no additional buffering or storage overhead is incurred. However, in some examples, the AI / ML functionality uses a time series of Set B beam measurements for AI / ML inference (especially when such Set-B beam measurements are based on SSBs or periodic or semi-persistent CSI-RSs) . In these cases, it may be unclear whether the AI / ML  functionalities should be considered as active, or whether there are additional complexities / efforts required for the UE comparing to legacy aperiodic CSI reports. For example, for an RNN-based AI / ML functionality, even if the corresponding aperiodic CSI report 550 has not been triggered, the AI / ML functionality may still operate based on most recent measurement results, such as at each measurement cycle. As another example, if a CNN-based or transformer-based architecture is used, even if the corresponding aperiodic CSI report 550 has not been triggered (as in the first time interval 520) , raw measurement results with regard to the most recent N measurement occasions may be buffered (while the associated AI / ML functionality can be running or not running) , in case of real-time triggering of the aperiodic CSI report 550. In this case, there are additional UE buffering efforts carried out, as compared to conventional aperiodic CSI reporting, even if the associated AI / ML functionality is not running in the first time interval 520.

[0111] Aspects of the present disclosure provide approaches for identifying whether an AI / ML functionality should be considered active in the context of aperiodic CSI reporting for beam prediction. Some aspects more specifically provide identification of whether an AI / ML functionality should be considered active before an aperiodic CSI report is triggered, as in the first time interval 520. For example, the UE may identify a number of AI / ML computational resource units in accordance with whether the AI / ML functionality is considered active before the aperiodic CSI report is triggered. In some examples, a UE identifies whether the AI / ML functionality associated with the CSI report 550 is considered active during a time interval during which a CPU associated with the CSI report 550 is not considered to be occupied. For example, this may be based on a UE capability or preference. As another example, this may be based on a characteristic such as an AI / ML functionality identifier or a configuration.

[0112] In some aspects, a UE may report an indication of a capability regarding whether an AI / ML functionality should be considered active during a first time interval 520 (that is, a time interval in which CPUs associated with the CSI report 550 are not considered occupied) . For example, this capability may be specific to a type of aperiodic CSI report or may be specific to an AI / ML functionality associated with the AP CSI report. In some aspects, the UE may provide a dynamic indication of whether an AI / ML functionality should be considered active during the first time interval 520.

[0113] In some aspects, the indication of the capability may relate to buffering of measurement results (that is, an input to an AI / ML functionality) .

[0114] In some aspects, the UE may identify whether the AI / ML functionality is considered active using a characteristic associated with the AI / ML functionality or the AP CSI report. For example, a configuration or a wireless communication specification may indicate, for an identifier of an AI / ML functionality, whether the AI / ML functionality should be considered active during the first time interval 520. In some aspects, the configuration or the wireless communication specification may indicate a number of measurement occasions associated with buffering measurement results, such as a number of measurement occasions for which the UE buffers measurement results in association with the AI / ML functionality.

[0115] In some aspects, a CPU may be considered to be occupied during the first time interval 520 when an AI / ML functionality is considered occupied during the first time interval 520.

[0116] Aspects of the present disclosure may be used to realize one or more of the following potential advantages.

[0117] In some aspects, by identifying a number of AI / ML computational resource units in accordance with whether an AI / ML functionality is considered active before an aperiodic CSI report is triggered, the UE can be configured with or can activate an appropriate number of AI / ML functionalities or type of AI / ML functionality, thereby improving resource utilization at the UE and efficiency of configuring the UE.

[0118] By reporting an indication of a capability regarding whether an AI / ML functionality should be considered active during the first time interval 520, the capabilities of the UE can be taken into account for the purpose of configuring or activating AI / ML functionalities. By making this capability specific to a type of aperiodic CSI report or an AI / ML functionality associated with the AP CSI report, differences in resource utilization at the UE for different aperiodic CSI reports or AI / ML functionalities can be taken into account. By providing a dynamic indication of whether an AI / ML functionality should be considered active during the first time interval 520, the UE can adapt AI / ML functionality usage to changing network conditions or resource availability at the UE.

[0119] By providing an indication of a capability relating to buffering of measurement results (that is, an input to an AI / ML functionality) , a processing load associated with buffering these measurement results can be taken into account for certain types of AI / ML functionality.

[0120] By identifying whether the AI / ML functionality is considered active using a characteristic associated with the AI / ML functionality or the AP CSI report, overhead may be reduced relative to dynamic signaling indicating whether the AI / ML functionality should be considered active or indicating a number of AI / ML computational resource units associated with the AI / ML functionality.

[0121] By considering a CPU to be occupied during the first time interval 520 when an AI / ML functionality is considered occupied during the first time interval 520, definitions of when CPUs and AI / ML computational resource units are considered to be occupied are simplified.

[0122] As used herein, “identifying a time at which an AI / ML model is active, ” is synonymous with “identifying a time at which an AI / ML is considered active. ” For example, the UE may perform computations using an AI / ML model during a time interval at which an AI / ML model is considered active. Irrespective of whether the computations are continuous throughout the time interval, the AI / ML model may be considered to be active throughout the time interval. Furthermore, “AI / ML model” may be used interchangeably with “AI / ML functionality” herein.

[0123] Figure 6 is a diagram illustrating an example 600 of signaling for counting AI / ML computational resources in accordance with the present disclosure. Example 600 includes a UE 120 (such as wireless communication device 302 or the UE of Figures 4 and 5) and a network node 110 (such as wireless communication device 304) .

[0124] The examples of Figure 6 relate to a first time interval and a second time interval. The second time interval is a time period in which a CPU associated with an aperiodic (AP) CSI report is considered to be occupied, such as the second time interval 540. The first time interval is a time interval outside of the second time interval, such as the first time interval 520. In some aspects, the CPU associated with the AP CSI report may be considered to be unoccupied in the second time interval. In some other aspects, the CPU associated with the AP CSI report may be considered to be occupied in the second time interval, as described below. The second time interval may start from a first symbol after a physical downlink control channel triggering an AP CSI report, and may end at a last symbol of a scheduled PUSCH carrying the AP CSI report.

[0125] As shown in Figure 6, in some examples, the UE 120 may transmit, and the network node 110 may receive, an indication 605 of a capability. In some aspects, the indication or the capability may indicate whether an AI / ML functionality is to be considered active in a first time interval. In some aspects, the UE 120 may transmit the indication 605 during initial access of the UE 120. In some aspects, the UE 120 may transmit the indication 605 via medium access control (MAC) signaling. In some aspects, the UE 120 may transmit the indication 605 via uplink control information (UCI) , such as via a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) transmission. For example, the indication 605 can be semi-static or dynamic. The indication 605 may include UE capability information or another form of information that indicates the capability. Thus, the UE 120 may report a capability on whether AI / ML functionality / model associated with an AP CSI report should be considered as active or inactive (for example, during a first time interval wherein the CPU (s) associated with the AP CSI report are not considered to be occupied) .

[0126] As one example, if the UE 120 can perform and use instantaneous measurements after receiving a triggering command (for example, trigger 530) for the AP CSI report, the indication 605 may indicate that the associated AI / ML functionality can be considered as inactive during the first time interval. As another example, if the UE 120 uses historical measurements before receiving the triggering command of the AP CSI report, the indication 605 may indicate that the associated AI / ML functionality is to be considered as active during the first time interval.

[0127] In some aspects, the indication 605 or the capability may be based on reporting separate capabilities for different types of AP CSI report, or for different types of AI / ML functionalities associated with the AP CSI report. For example, the capability may be associated with a report type of the AP CSI report (for example, the capability may be specific to a temporal and spatial prediction report time, a pure spatial prediction report type, a cross-cell or frequency-domain prediction report type, or a blockage / beam failure / radio link failure prediction report type) . As another example, the capability may be specific to a type of the measurement resource (for example, the capability may be specific to CMRs, specific to IMRs, or specific to Set B beams) or a number of measurement resources. As another example, the capability may be specific to a type of a prediction target resource (for example, the capability may be specific to CMRs, specific to IMRs, or specific to Set A beams) associated with the channel characteristic. As another example, the capability may be specific to a type of the  AI / ML functionality (such as an ANN-based AI / ML functionality, an RNN-based AI / ML functionality, an LSTM-based AI / ML functionality, or a CNN or transformer based AI / ML functionality) . In some examples, identifying whether the AI / ML functionality is considered to be active (such as for various types of AP CSI reports or AI / ML functionalities) can be performed according to the indication 605 (such as without further signaling from the network to indicate whether the AI / ML functionality is to be considered active) , which may reduce overhead.

[0128] In some aspects, the UE 120 may provide an updated indication 605, such as a dynamic indication of a capability. For example, the UE 120 may provide the updated indication 605 via MAC signaling, UCI, or an AP CSI report. In one example, the UE 120 may provide the updated indication 605 in accordance with a change of the AI / ML functionality. For example, the UE 120 may change an AI / ML model associated with an AI / ML functionality (such as due to computational resource restrictions) , wherein the updated AI / ML model is associated with a higher computational complexity or more buffering of measurements than the previous AI / ML model. In this situation, the UE 120 may provide an updated indication 605 that indicates a diminished capability for AI / ML computational resource units. In some aspects, the UE 120 may apply the capability indicated by the updated indication 605 only after receiving a confirmation from the network node 110 regarding the updated indication 605.

[0129] In some aspects, the indication 605 or the capability identifies a number of measurement occasions associated with buffering measurement results. For example, there may be situations in which a CPU is not considered to be occupied (such as during the first time interval) and the UE may buffer measurement results (for example, raw measurement results) with regard to a number of measurement occasions. During the first time interval, the AI / ML functionality may or may not be considered active. The indication 605 or the capability may identify the number of measurement occasions associated with buffering measurement results, which may support calculating a number of AI / ML computational resource units during the first time interval in these scenarios.

[0130] For example, the indication 605 or the capability may indicate N measurement occasions. This can be reported as a capability or dynamically updated for a particular AP CSI report. In some aspects, the UE 120 or the network node 110 may identify a number of AI / ML computational resource units for the AI / ML functionality during the first time interval in accordance with the number of measurement occasions. For example, if the number of measurement occasions is zero or is not reported (that is, if  the UE 120 can use only measurements collected after receiving the triggering command to feedback prediction results) , the occupied number of AI / ML computational resource units associated with the AI / ML functionality in the first time interval can be defined as K. If the UE 120 uses historical measurements (collected in the first time interval before receiving the triggering command) to identify or provide prediction results, and the corresponding AI / ML functionality is activated during the first time interval, the occupied number of AI / ML computational resource units associated with the AI / ML functionality can be defined as K (for example, in the case of an RNN-based AI / ML functionality, in order to propagate the AI / ML model’s memory cells and hidden states, the UE 120 may run AI / ML inference each time the UE 120 obtains Set B beam measurements) . Additionally, or alternatively, if the UE uses N occasions of historical measurements to generate prediction results, and the AI / ML functionality is not activated during the first time interval, the occupied number of AI / ML computational resource units associated with the AI / ML functionality can be defined as NK (for example, in the case of an RNN-based AI / ML functionality, N rounds of inference of the same AI / ML functionality may be performed once the UE 120 receives a triggering command for the associated AP CSI report, or a more complex AI / ML model may be used, whose complexity may linearly increase with the value of N) .

[0131] As shown, the network node 110 may transmit, and the UE 120 may receive, a configuration 610 of an AP CSI report (such as aperiodic CSI report 550) that can be triggered using a DCI indicating an uplink grant for the AP CSI report. The configuration 610 may include, for example, at least part of the information included in the CSI report configuration 510.

[0132] In some aspects, the configuration 610 may indicate one or more CMRs and / or one or more IMRs, which may correspond to SSBs or P / SP CSI-RSs. The configuration 610 may include a report quantity (such as via a parameter reportQuantity) that indicates to provide an AP CSI report regarding a channel characteristic on a prediction target resource, such as an SSB resource, a CSI-RS resource, a virtual resource, a Set A beam, a top number of resources (such as a top K resources) according to a metric, or the like. For example, the AP CSI report may have a temporal and spatial prediction report type, and may provide L1-RSRP or L1-SINR predictions regarding future temporal occasion (s) that are at least later than the reporting occasion. As another example, the AP CSI report may have a spatial report type, in which an L1-RSRP, an L1-SINR, or a top K beams are reported regarding a latest measurement occasion on  which the one or more CMR or one or more IMRs were measured. As another example, the AP CSI report may have a cross-cell or frequency-domain prediction report type, in which an L1-RSRP, an L1-SINR, or a top K beams are reported regarding a different cell or frequency range than a cell or frequency range of Set B beams of the AP CSI report. As another example, the AP CSI report may have a blockage, beam failure, or radio link failure prediction report type, in which the AP CSI report relates to one or more future blockage, beam failure, or radio link failure instances (either regarding the same cell or frequency range as includes the Set B beams, or regarding a different cell or frequency range) .

[0133] As shown, in some examples, the network node 110 may transmit, and the UE 120 may receive, information 615 indicating whether the AI / ML functionality is considered active. For example, the network node 110 may signal information indicating (such as for a particular AP CSI report) whether an AI / ML functionality should be considered active during the first time interval. In some aspects, the information 615 may be transmitted with or as a part of the configuration 610 (such as included in CSI-AssociatedReportConfigInfo) . In some aspects, the information 615 may be transmitted via MAC signaling or DCI (such as in a case in which the network node 110 initiates an AI / ML model or functionality switch at the UE 120) . This may be particularly beneficial in situations where the AI / ML functionalities are pretrained by the network node 110 or another entity and delivered to the UE 120. In some aspects, the information 615 may indicate a characteristic associated with the AI / ML functionality or the AI CSI report, and may indicate whether AI / ML functionalities associated with the characteristic are considered active in the first time interval. For example, the characteristic may include an identifier associated with the AI / ML functionality (such as a model identifier) . As another example, the characteristic may include a type of the AP CSI report or the like.

[0134] In some aspects, a wireless communication specification may define whether an AI / ML functionality is considered active during the first time interval. For example, the wireless communication specification may indicate a characteristic associated with the AI / ML functionality or the AI CSI report, and may indicate whether the AI / ML functionality associated with the characteristic is considered to be active during the first time interval. For example, the characteristic may include an identifier associated with the AI / ML functionality (such as a model identifier) . As another example, the characteristic may include a type of the AP CSI report or the like. This may be  particularly beneficial in situations where the AI / ML functionalities are trained offline and coordinated across gNBs and UEs.

[0135] In some aspects, the information 615 may identify a number of measurement occasions associated with buffering measurement results (referred to above as N) . Additionally, or alternatively, a wireless communication specification may indicate the number of measurement occasions associated with buffering measurement results.

[0136] As shown by reference number 620, the UE 120 and / or the network node 110 may identify a number of AI / ML computational resource units for the first time interval. For example, the UE 120 and / or the network node 110 may identify the number of AI / ML computational resource units in accordance with whether the AI / ML functionality is considered active in the first time interval. If the AI / ML functionality is not considered active in the first time interval, the UE 120 and / or the network node 110  may identify the number as zero AI / ML computational resource units in the first time interval. If the AI / ML functionality is considered active in the first time interval, the UE 120 and / or the network node 110 may identify the number as K AI / ML computational resource units in the first time interval. In some aspects, the UE 120 and / or the network node 110 may identify a number of AI / ML computational resource units in the second time interval. For example, if the AI / ML functionality is considered active in the second interval, the UE 120 and / or the network node 110 may identify the number as K or KN AI / ML computational resource units in the second time interval, as described below. Examples of identifying the number of AI / ML computational resource units for various AI / ML functionalities and capabilities are provided in connection with Figures 7, 8, and 9. Furthermore, some examples of identifying the number of AI / ML computational resource units are provided in connection with the description above of reporting or configuration of numbers of measurement occasions.

[0137] As shown by reference number 625, the network node 110 may transmit, and the UE 120 may receive, a triggering command (such as the trigger 530 of Figure 5) . Thus, the first time interval may end and the second time interval may begin.

[0138] As shown by reference number 630, the UE 120 may transmit, and the network node 110 may receive, an AP CSI report in accordance with the number of AI / ML computational resource units. For example, the AP CSI report may be configured in accordance with the configuration 610, which may be configured so that a limit on the number of AI / ML computational resource units is not exceeded. As another example, the UE 120 may generate the AP CSI report only if the number of AI / ML computational resource units is not exceeded.

[0139] In some aspects, the UE 120 and / or the network node 110 may identify a number of active CPUs based at least in part on a number of AI / ML computational resource units. For example, the UE 120 and / or the network node 110 may identify, during the first time interval (that is, a time interval in which a CPU may not be considered to be occupied in the absence of an AI / ML functionality) , one or more occupied CPUs associated with the AP CSI report. The UE 120 and / or the network node 110 may identify the one or more occupied CPUs in accordance with the AI / ML functionality being considered active in the first time interval. Thus, during the first time interval, if the AI / ML functionality is considered active according to techniques described herein, CPUs associated with the AP CSI report may be considered as occupied during the first time interval.

[0140] Figure 7 is a diagram illustrating an example 700 of AI / ML computational resource counting for a CNN-based AI / ML functionality, in accordance with the present disclosure. As shown, a UE 120 may identify a set of measurement results 710 regarding a set of Set B beams, which may include measurement results obtained using SSBs or P / SP CSI-RSs. An AI / ML functionality 720 is inactive in a first time interval 730 (such as first time interval 520 or the first time interval of Figure 6) . In example 700, the AI / ML functionality is associated with a CNN-based AI / ML model. As shown by reference number 740, in example 700, CPUs associated with an AP CSI report are not occupied while the AI / ML functionality 720 is inactive. The AI / ML functionality 720 is active in a second time interval 750 (such as the second time interval 540 or the second time interval of Figure 6) . Thus, as shown by reference number 760, CPUs associated with the AP CSI report are occupied in the second time interval 750. In the second time interval 750, the occupied number of AI / ML computational resource units may be K (described in more detail above) . As shown by reference number 770, the UE 120 may transmit an AP CSI report indicating beam prediction results regarding Set A beams.

[0141] Figure 8 is a diagram illustrating an example 800 of AI / ML computational resource counting for an LSTM-based AI / ML functionality, in accordance with the present disclosure. As shown, a UE 120 may identify a set of measurement results 810 regarding a set of Set B beams, which may include measurement results obtained using SSBs or P / SP CSI-RSs. An AI / ML functionality 820 is active in a first time interval 830 (such as first time interval 520 or the first time interval of Figure 6) . In example 800, the AI / ML functionality is associated with an LSTM-based AI / ML model. For example, the measurement results 810 may be provided to the AI / ML functionality 820 prior to an AP CSI report being triggered, such that the AI / ML functionality 820 can feed forward memory cells and hidden states, and beam prediction results, for a next iteration of the AI / ML functionality, as shown by reference number 840.

[0142] As shown by reference number 850, in example 800, CPUs associated with an AP CSI report are not occupied while the AI / ML functionality 820 is active during the first time interval 830. The AI / ML functionality 820 is also active in a second time interval 860 (such as the second time interval 540 or the second time interval of Figure 6) , as shown by reference number 870. In both the first time interval 830 and the second time interval 860, the occupied number of AI / ML computational resource units may be K (described in more detail above) . As shown by reference number 880, the UE  120 may transmit an AP CSI report indicating beam prediction results regarding Set A beams.

[0143] In some aspects (not illustrated in Figure 8) , the UE 120 and / or the network node 110 may identify a number of active CPUs during a time in which the AI / ML functionality 820 is active. For example, the UE 120 and / or the network node 110 may identify, during the first time interval 830 (that is, a time interval in which a CPU may not be considered to be occupied in the absence of the AI / ML functionality 820) , one or more occupied CPUs associated with the AP CSI report. The UE 120 and / or the network node 110 may identify the one or more occupied CPUs in accordance with the AI / ML functionality 820 being considered active in the first time interval 830. Thus, during the first time interval 830, if the AI / ML functionality is considered active according to techniques described herein, CPUs associated with the AP CSI report may be considered as occupied during the first time interval 830.

[0144] Figure 9 is a diagram illustrating an example 900 of AI / ML computational resource counting for an LSTM-based AI / ML functionality, in accordance with the present disclosure. Example 900 differs from example 800 in that, in example 900, the AI / ML functionality 920 is active only in the second time interval 960, though measurement results 910 are buffered in the first time interval 930. However, in example 900, the AI / ML functionality 920 receives each of the buffered measurement results 910 and computes beam prediction results using each of the buffered measurement results 910.

[0145] As shown, a UE 120 may identify a set of measurement results 910 regarding a set of Set B beams. The set of measurement results 910 may include measurement results obtained using SSBs or P / SP CSI-RSs. The AI / ML functionality 920 is inactive in a first time interval 930 (such as first time interval 520 or the first time interval of Figure 6) . In example 900, the AI / ML functionality is associated with an LSTM-based AI / ML model. For example, the measurement results 910 may be provided to the AI / ML functionality 920 such that the AI / ML functionality 920 can feed forward memory cells and hidden states, and beam prediction results, for a next iteration of the AI / ML functionality 920. However, unlike example 800, in example 900, each of these iterations may be performed in the second time interval 960 (after a trigger for the AP CSI report is received) . Thus, in the second time interval 960, the occupied number of AI / ML computational resource units may be NK (described in more detail above) , corresponding to K AI / ML computational resource units used to process each of N  measurement results 910. As shown by reference number 970, in example 900, CPUs associated with an AP CSI report are occupied while the AI / ML functionality 920 is active. As shown by reference number 980, the UE 120 may transmit an AP CSI report indicating beam prediction results regarding Set A beams.

[0146] Figure 10 is a flowchart illustrating an example process 1000 performed, for example, at a UE or an apparatus of a UE that supports AI / ML occupation for aperiodic channel state information based temporal beam prediction feedback in accordance with the present disclosure. Example process 1000 is an example where the apparatus or the UE (for example, UE 120) performs operations associated with AI / ML occupation for aperiodic channel state information based temporal beam prediction feedback.

[0147] As shown in Figure 10, in some aspects, process 1000 may include receiving a configuration of an AP CSI report, wherein a measurement resource associated with the AP CSI report is associated with a synchronization signal block or a periodic or semi-persistent reference signal, and wherein the AP CSI report is associated with a channel characteristic associated with an AI / ML functionality (block 1010) . For example, the UE (such as by using communication manager 140 or reception component 1202, depicted in Figure 12) may receive a configuration of an AP CSI report. A measurement resource associated with the AP CSI report may be associated with a synchronization signal block or a periodic or semi-persistent reference signal. The AP CSI report may relate to a channel characteristic associated with an AI / ML functionality, as described above. For example, the channel characteristic may be a predicted value identified using the AI / ML functionality.

[0148] As further shown in Figure 10, in some aspects, process 1000 may include identifying, for a first time interval outside of a second time interval that occurs between a trigger for the AP CSI report and a transmission of the AP CSI report, a number of AI / ML computational resource units, wherein identifying the number of AI / ML computational resource units is in accordance with whether the AI / ML functionality is considered active in the first time interval (block 1020) . For example, the UE (such as by using communication manager 140 or identification component 1208, depicted in Figure 12) may identify, for a first time interval outside of a second time interval that occurs between a trigger for the AP CSI report and a transmission of the AP CSI report, a number of AI / ML computational resource units. Identifying the number of AI / ML computational resource units may be in accordance with whether the AI / ML functionality is considered active in the first time interval, as described above.

[0149] As further shown in Figure 10, in some aspects, process 1000 may include transmitting the AP CSI report in accordance with the number of AI / ML computational resource units (block 1030) . For example, the UE (such as by using communication manager 140 or transmission component 1204, depicted in Figure 12) may transmit the AP CSI report in accordance with the number of AI / ML computational resource units, as described above.

[0150] Process 1000 may include additional aspects, such as any single aspect or any combination of aspects described below or in connection with one or more other processes described elsewhere herein.

[0157] In a seventh additional aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first through sixth aspects, identifying the number of AI / ML computational resource units in accordance with whether the AI / ML functionality is considered active further comprises identifying whether the AI / ML functionality is considered active using a characteristic associated with the AI / ML functionality or the AP CSI report.

[0158] In an eighth additional aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first through seventh aspects, the characteristic is an identifier associated with the AI / ML functionality.

[0161] In an eleventh additional aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first through tenth aspects, receiving the information further comprises receiving the information via medium access control signaling or downlink control information.

[0162] In a twelfth additional aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first through eleventh aspects, the information identifies a number of measurement occasions associated with buffering measurement results, wherein identifying the number of AI / ML computational resource units further comprises identifying the number of AI / ML computational resource units in accordance with the number of measurement occasions.
