Abstract

Methods, apparatus, and systems that relate to signaling overhead reduction in channel state information (CSI) reporting that includes information for multiple CSI Reference Signal (CSI-RS) resources or resource sets are disclosed. In one example aspect, a method for wireless communication includes receiving, by a terminal device, a configuration signaling from a base station. The configuration signaling configures CSI reporting and indicates that multiple CSI reference signals correspond to multiple CSI-RS resources for a channel measurement. The method also includes transmitting, by the terminal device, a CSI report to the base station based on the channel measurement. The CSI report comprises multiple sets of report quantities, and at least part of the multiple sets of report quantities shares information that is included once in the CSI report.

[0017] Section headings are used in the present document only to improve readability and do  not limit scope of the disclosed embodiments and techniques in each section to only that section. Furthermore, some embodiments are described with reference to Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Fifth Generation (5G) New Radio (NR) or Sixth Generation (6G) standard for ease of understanding and the described technology may be implemented in different wireless system that implement protocols other than the NR or 6G protocol.

[0018] The following terms are defined as follows in this document.

[0019] – “User Equipment (UE) ” is equivalent to a wireless communication device.

[0020] – “Base Station (BS) ” is equivalent to a next Generation Node B (gNB) , a wireless network device / node, or a Transmission and Reception Point (TRP) .

[0021] – An “antenna port” is equivalent to “BS antenna port” , or “Channel State Information Reference Signal (CSI-RS) antenna port. ”

[0022] – A “higher layer parameter” is equivalent to a “Radio Resource Control (RRC) parameter. ”

[0023] – A “spatial domain (SD) basis” is equivalent to vl, m or The quantities vl, m and  corresponding to (l, m) are defined in clause 5.2.2.2.1 of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Technical Specification (TS) 38.214 as

[0024] where N1 N2 are defined in clause 5.2.2.2.1 of TS 38.214, the number of antenna ports P=2N1N2, and O1 O2 are oversampling factors defined in clause 5.2.2.2.1 of TS 38.214.

[0025] – The “frequency domain (FD) basis” corresponding to and l is defined in clause 5.2.2.2.5 of TS 38.214 as

[0026] where N3 is the number of total precoding matrices, Mv is the number of selected FD bases, and l is the layer index or layer group index.

[0029] – A “phase” is equivalent to “phase coefficient” or “coefficient phase. ”

[0030] In a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communication system, as the number of antenna ports increases, hybrid beamforming / precoding becomes the most efficient way to enable high-throughput downlink transmission. Generally, the base station (BS) first performs analog beamforming and transmits channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) to the UE. The UE measures the channel and reports the channel state information (CSI) to the BS. Finally, the BS performs hybrid beamforming by combining the analog beamforming and the CSI-based digital beamforming. Typically, the BS forms multiple analog beams towards different directions. For each analog beam, the BS transmits CSI-RS to the UE, and the UE reports the CSI corresponding to the analog beam. According to the feedback CSIs, the BS can select a best analog beam and perform hybrid beamforming by using the selected analog beam and the digital beam based on the CSI.

[0031] Before Release 19 of the 3GPP standard, the maximum number of CSI-RS resource indicator (CRI) in CRI-based CSI reporting is limited to 1. In Release 19, the maximum number of CRIs is extended to more than 1, e.g., 2, or 4. As the number of CRIs increases, the reporting overhead increases significantly. This patent document discloses techniques that can be implemented in various embodiments to reduce the reporting overhead, e.g., especially when Type-II codebook is adopted. In addition, the disclosed techniques are applicable to the time line restriction, and CSI computation unit (CPU) occupation so that the relevant parameters are modified to support the enhancement in Release 19.

[0032] FIG. 1 illustrates an example CSI reporting in accordance with one or more embodiments of the present technology. In CSI reporting, CRI values are used by the BS to indicate the corresponding CSI Reference Signal beams 101a, 101b, 101c, 101d for the measurement. When multiple CRI values are configured by the BS, the UE can include multiple sets of report quantities 103a, 103b, 103c, 103d in a single CSI report 105, where each set is associated with one CRI.

[0033] FIG. 2A is a flowchart representation of a method for wireless communication in accordance with one or more embodiments of the present technology. The method 200 includes,  at operation 210, receiving, by a terminal device, a configuration signaling (e.g., Radio Resource Control, RRC, signaling) from a base station configuring channel state information (CSI) reporting. The configuration signaling indicates that multiple CSI reference signals correspond to multiple CSI Reference Signal (CSI-RS) resources for a channel measurement. The method 200 includes, at operation 220, transmitting, by the terminal device, a CSI report to the base station based on the channel measurement. The CSI report comprises multiple sets of report quantities, and at least part of the multiple sets of report quantities shares information that is included once in the CSI report.

[0034] FIG. 2B is a flowchart representation of a method for wireless communication in accordance with one or more embodiments of the present technology. The method 250 includes, at operation 260, transmitting, by a base station, a configuration signaling to a terminal device configuring channel state information (CSI) reporting. The configuration signaling indicates that multiple CSI reference signals correspond to multiple CSI Reference Signal (CSI-RS) resources for a channel measurement. The method 250 includes, at operation 270, receiving, by the base station, a CSI report from the terminal device based on the channel measurement. The CSI report comprises multiple sets of report quantities, and at least part of the multiple sets of report quantities shares information that is included once in the CSI report.

[0035] In some embodiments, each set of the multiple sets of report quantities comprises at least one of: a CSI-RS resource indicator (CRI) , a rank indicator (RI) , a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) , or a channel quality indicator (CQI) .

[0036] In some embodiments, the multiple sets of report quantities can be divided into groups. FIG. 3 illustrates an example grouping of CSI report quantity sets and the corresponding CSI report in accordance with one or more embodiments of the present technology. In some scenarios, some CRI values correspond to a subset of beams with similar characteristics, while other CRI values correspond to another subset of beams with similar characteristics. For example, as shown in FIG. 3, beams 301a, 301b have similar characteristics and can be organized as a group. Correspondingly, the two sets of report quantities 303a, 303b corresponding to the CRI values associated with beams 301a, 301b can be organized as a group. Beam 301c, 301d have similar characteristics, and the two sets of report quantities 303c, 303d corresponding to the CRI values associated with beams 301c, 301d can be organized as another group. In each group, the CSI report quantity sets can share at least one parameter that is  included once in the CSI report, thereby reducing the signaling overhead.

[0037] If the CSI report configuration signaling only includes one codebookSubsetRestriction (CBSR) , the CBSR applies for all the N CSI report quantity set. If the CSI report configuration signaling includes multiple CBSRs (e.g., each CSI-RS resource is provided with one corresponding CBSR) , each CBSR only applies to the CSI report associated with the corresponding CSI-RS resource. Each set of the multiple sets of report quantities comprises at least one of: a CSI-RS resource indicator (CRI) , a rank indicator (RI) , a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) , or a channel quality indicator (CQI) .

[0038] Details regarding the above techniques are further discussed in the embodiments below.

[0039] Embodiment 1

[0040] This embodiment is related to overhead reduction for CRIs-based CSI reporting when Type-I codebook is adopted. For CRIs-based CSI reporting, at least one of the following methods can be applied to reduce the reporting overhead.

[0041] Method 1: Overhead reduction for reporting i1

[0042] In some embodiments, all of the N CSI report quantity sets can share at least one parameter, such as parameter i1 in a precoding matrix (e.g., including i1, 1 and i1, 2, or i1, 1, i1, 2, and i1, 3) . As another example, the shared parameter can be at least one of: one common i1, 1, one common i1, 2, or one common i1, 3, the common i1, i1, 1, i1, 2, or i1, 3. The share parameter (s) are only reported once.

[0043] In some embodiments, a reference parameter and one or more offsets with respect to the reference parameter can be used. For example, N i1, 1 corresponding to N CSI report quantity sets, denoted as {i1, 1 (1) , i1, 1 (2) , …, i1, 1 (N) }, can be indicated by a reference i1, 1, ref and N-1 offsets {Δ1, 1 (1) , Δ1, 1 (2) , …, Δ1, 1 (N-1) }. For instance, i1, 1 (1) =i1, 1, ref, i1, 2 (k+1) =i1, 1, ref+Δ1, 1 (k) . The reference i1, 1, ref and N-1 offsets {Δ1, 1 (1) , Δ1, 1 (2) , …, Δ1, 1 (N-1) } are reported. As another example, N i1, 2 corresponding to N CSI report quantity sets, denoted as {i1, 2 (1) , i1, 2 (2) , …, i1, 2 (N) }, can be indicated by a reference i1, 2, ref and N-1 offsets {Δ1, 2 (1) , Δ1, 2 (2) , …, Δ1, 2 (N-1) }. For instance, i1, 2 (1) =i1, 2, ref, i1, 2 (k+1) =i1, 2, ref+Δ1, 2 (k) . The reference i1, 2, ref and N-1 offsets {Δ1, 2 (1) , Δ1, 2 (2) , …, Δ1, 2 (N-1) } are reported. As yet another example, N (i1, 1, i1, 2) corresponding to N CSI report quantity sets, denoted as  { (i1, 1 (1) , i1, 2 (1) ) , )i1, 1 (2) , i1, 2 (2) ) , …, (i1, 1 (N) , i1, 2 (N) ) }, can be indicated by a reference (i1, 1, ref, i1, 2, ref) and N-1 offsets { (Δ1, 1 (1) , Δ1, 2 (1) ) , (Δ1, 1 (2) , Δ1, 2 (2) ) , …, (Δ1, 1 (N-1) , Δ1, 2 (N-1) ) }. The reference (i1, 1, ref, i1, 2, ref) and N-1 offsets { (Δ10, 1 (1) , Δ1, 2 (1) ) , (Δ10, 1 (2) , Δ1, 2 (2) ) , …, (Δ1, 1 (N-1) , Δ1, 2 (N-1) ) } are reported. If the N-1 offsets are indicated by one or more (e.g., N-1) indicators, the reference and the indicator (s) of the N-1 offsets are reported.

[0044] In some embodiments, for all of the N CSI report quantity sets, at least one of: i1, 1, i1, 2, or i1, 3 can belong to a common subset. The common subset is reported in addition to the N CSI report quantity set, and the common subset is only reported once. For instance, the i1, 1 for all the N CSI report quantity sets can belong to a common subset The subset can be indicated by at least one of:

[0045] – A start point / value and an end point / value;

[0046] – A start point / value and a subset length;

[0047] – A middle point / value (e.g., the mid-point between the start / end point / value) and a subset length; or

[0048] – a bitmap, where the length of the bitmap equals to the number of the candidate values of i1, 1, i1, 2, or i1, 3. The k-th bit in the bitmap is associated with the k-th candidate value of i1, 1, i1, 2, or i1, 3. If one bit in the bitmap is set to 1, the corresponding candidate value is included in the subset.

[0049] In some embodiments, the subset or the indicator (s) of the subset is reported in addition to the N CSI report quantity set, and is only reported once. For each CSI report quantity set, an indicator is reported to indicate the i1, 1, i1, 2, or i1, 3 in the common subset.

[0050] In some embodiments, the N CSI report quantity set can be divided into G (G>1) groups, each group includes or less CSI report quantity sets. In each group, the CSI report quantity sets can share at least one parameter, such as parameter i1 in a precoding matrix (e.g., including i1, 1 and i1, 2, or i1, 1, i1, 2, and i1, 3) . As another example, the shared parameter can be at least one of: one common i1, 1, one common i1, 2, or one common i1, 3, the common i1, i1, 1, i1, 2, or i1, 3. The share parameter (s) are only reported once for the group.

[0051] Method 2: Overhead reduction for reporting i2

[0052] In some embodiments, the N CSI report quantity sets can share a parameter i2 in the precoding matrix that is included only once in the CSI report. In some embodiments, i2 for the N CSI report quantity sets can belong to a common subset. The subset or the indicator (s) of the subset is reported only once in addition to the N CSI repots. For each CSI report, an indicator is reported to indicate the i2 in the common subset. In some embodiments, the subset can be indicated by at least one of:

[0053] – A start point / value and an end point / value;

[0194] The processes and logic flows described in this document can be performed by one or more programmable processors executing one or more computer programs to perform functions by operating on input data and generating output. The processes and logic flows can also be performed by, and apparatus can also be implemented as, special purpose logic circuitry, e.g., an FPGA (field programmable gate array) or an ASIC (application specific integrated circuit) . Processors suitable for the execution of a computer program include, by way of example, both general and special purpose microprocessors, and any one or more processors of any kind of digital computer. Generally, a processor will receive instructions and data from a read only memory or a random-access memory or both. The essential elements of a computer are a processor for performing instructions and one or more memory devices for storing instructions  and data. Generally, a computer will also include, or be operatively coupled to receive data from or transfer data to, or both, one or more mass storage devices for storing data, e.g., magnetic, magneto optical disks, or optical disks. However, a computer need not have such devices. Computer readable media suitable for storing computer program instructions and data include all forms of non-volatile memory, media and memory devices, including by way of example semiconductor memory devices, e.g., EPROM, EEPROM, and flash memory devices; magnetic disks, e.g., internal hard disks or removable disks; magneto optical disks; and CD ROM and DVD-ROM disks. The processor and the memory can be supplemented by, or incorporated in, special purpose logic circuitry.

[0195] It is noted that operation of the satellite-based wireless communications as disclosed herein causes a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional methods. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that the overall share of carbon emissions from information and communication technologies (ICT) accounts for approximately 4%of the total amount of CO2 emitted around world. Further, conventional networks can sometimes exacerbate the causes of climate change. For example, at an average of approximately 485g of CO2 per KWh of electricity that is produced worldwide, it results in a rough estimate of 145.5 million metric tons of CO2. The implementations disclosed herein for operating the satellite-based wireless communications can reduce signaling overhead for satellite-based wireless communications using regenerative payload and mitigate climate change by reducing and / or preventing additional greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. For example, the use of the common signaling that is applicable to multiple UEs can help avoid conventional signaling procedures as described herein, particularly when transparent payload is used, and reduces electrical power consumption and the amount of data transported and stored compared to traditional methods. In particular, by reducing the signaling exchange between the satellite-based base stations and the core network, the disclosed systems provide increased efficiency compared to traditional methods.

[0196] Moreover, Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) , the organization that represents mobile operators and the telecommunication industry worldwide, has estimated that currently 20–40%of the operating cost of network operators is taken up by electricity, and that 5G can cause a substantial (as much as four to five fold) increase of energy consumption in the RAN, but that the technical means to reduce this consumption can be  included in later generation mobile networks. Expanding the capabilities of the Store &Forward approach using the embodiments disclosed herein reduces the amount of data transported and stored and obviates the need for wasteful CO2 emissions. Therefore, the disclosed implementations for operation of the satellite-based wireless communications mitigates climate change and the effects of climate change by reducing the repetitive amount of data stored and downloaded in comparison to conventional network technologies.

[0197] While this patent document contains many specifics, these should not be construed as limitations on the scope of any invention or of what may be claimed, but rather as descriptions of features that may be specific to particular embodiments of particular inventions. Certain features that are described in this patent document in the context of separate embodiments can also be implemented in combination in a single embodiment. Conversely, various features that are described in the context of a single embodiment can also be implemented in multiple embodiments separately or in any suitable subcombination. Moreover, although features may be described above as acting in certain combinations and even initially claimed as such, one or more features from a claimed combination can in some cases be excised from the combination, and the claimed combination may be directed to a subcombination or variation of a subcombination.

[0198] Similarly, while operations are depicted in the drawings in a particular order, this should not be understood as requiring that such operations be performed in the particular order shown or in sequential order, or that all illustrated operations be performed, to achieve desirable results. Moreover, the separation of various system components in the embodiments described in this patent document should not be understood as requiring such separation in all embodiments.

[0199] Only a few implementations and examples are described, and other implementations, enhancements and variations can be made based on what is described and illustrated in this patent document.
