[0037] Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0038] FIG. 1A illustrates a schematic diagram of an example communication environment 100A in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. In the communication environment 100A, a plurality of communication devices, including a first device 110, a second device 120 and a third device 130, are illustrated.

[0039] The first device 110 may perform communication and / or sensing with the third device 130. In the case where the sensing is performed, the first device 110 may be a sensing transmitter (also referred to as a Tx sensing device / node) which transmits a sensing signal, and the third device 130 may be a sensing receiver (also referred to as a Rx sensing device / node) which receives the sensing signal and obtain a sensing result based on the received sensing signal.

[0040] In some cases, the first device 110 and the third device 130 may be terminal devices, respectively, and the second device 120 may be a base station serving one or more of the terminal devices. The serving area of the second device 120 may be called a cell or a coverage. In some embodiments, the first device 110 and the third device 130 may be both in the coverage of the second device 120. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the first device 110 is in the coverage but the third device 130 is outside of the coverage.

[0041] It is to be understood that the number of devices and their connections shown in FIG. 1 are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The communication environment 100A may include any suitable number of devices configured to implementing example embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more additional devices may be located in the cell or coverage of the second device, and one or more additional cells may be deployed in the communication environment 100A. It is noted that although illustrated as a network device, the second device 120 may be another device than a network device. Although illustrated as a terminal device, the first device 110 or the third device 130 may be other device than a terminal device.

[0042] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the first device 110 and / or the third device 130 operating as a terminal device, e.g., UE, and the second device 120 operating as a network device, for instance a RAN network  device (e.g., gNB) , a core network device (e.g., implementing a sensing function (SF) , a location management function (LMF) , etc. ) , and so on. However, in some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal device may be implemented at a network device or other device, and operations described in connection with a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other device.

[0043] In some example embodiments, if the terminal device 110 is a terminal device and the network device 120 is a network device, a link from the network device 120 to the terminal device 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the terminal device 110 to the network device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the network device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the terminal device 110 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the terminal device 110 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the network device 120 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0044] Although FIG. 1A illustrates that the first device 110 and the third device 130 are separate from each other, that is, they are different devices, embodiments of the present disclosure are also appliable to the scenario where the first device 110 and the third device 130 are implemented at a single physical entity or device. FIG. 1B illustrates a schematic diagram of such an example communication environment 100B. In the communication environment 100B, a plurality of communication devices, including a first device 110 and a second device 120, are illustrated.

[0045] The first device 110 may perform a sensing procedure with itself. That is, the first device 110 may be both a sensing transmitter and a sensing receiver. In this case, the first device 110 may be considered to be integrated with the third device 130 discussed in embodiments of FIG. 1A.

[0046] In some cases, the first device 110 may be a terminal device and the second device 120 may operate as a network device, for instance a RAN network device (e.g., gNB) , a core network device (e.g., implementing a sensing function (SF) , a location management function (LMF) , etc. ) , and so on. In an example, the second device 120 may act as a RAN network device serving the terminal device. The serving area of the second device 120 may be called a cell or a coverage and the first device 110 may be in the coverage of the second device 120 and thus may receive configuration information related to the sensing from the second device 120. In some cases, the first device 110 may move out of the coverage and the sensing result may be unable to be provided to the second device 120 until the first device connects to another device in the coverage or move back into the coverage again.

[0047] The communications in the communication environment 100A or 100B may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , New Radio (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0048] As used herein, the term “sensing transmitter” may be the entity that sends out the sensing signal which the sensing service will use in its operation. A Sensing transmitter is an NR RAN node or a UE. A Sensing transmitter can be located in the same or different entity as the Sensing receiver.

[0049] The term “sensing receiver” may be an entity that receives the sensing signal which the sensing service will use in its operation. A sensing receiver is an NR RAN node or a UE. A Sensing receiver can be located in the same or different entity as the Sensing transmitter.

[0050] The term “sensing signal (s) ” may refer to transmissions on the 3GPP radio interface that can be used for sensing purposes. The sensing signals may refer to NR radio frequency signals which, in some cases, may be extended by information created via previously specified functionalities in EPC and / or E-UTRAN.

[0051] The term “sensing result” is also referred to as a result of a sensing, which may refer to processed 3GPP sensing data requested by a service consumer.

[0052] As used herein, a sensing function (SF) or a SF device / node may refer to a device / node implementing a core network function to trigger sensing, collect sensing result / report, and expose the sensing result / report to the 3rd party which is in or out of 3GPP scope.

[0053] There are generally two types of sensing modes defined based on Tx / Rx node of sensing signal, namely, monostatic and bi-static. These types of sensing modes include 6  specific modes, namely, Sensing Mode 1 which is a gNB mono-static sensing, Sensing Mode 2 which is gNB-to-gNB bi-static sensing, Sensing Mode 3 which is gNB-to-UE bi-static sensing, Sensing Mode 4 which is UE-to-gNB bi-static sensing, Sensing Mode 5 which is UE mono-static sensing, and Sensing Mode 6 which is UE-to-UE bi-static sensing.

[0054] Reference is now made to FIG. 2, which illustrates a schematic diagram 200 of six example sensing modes in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0055] As shown in FIG. 2, sensing mode 1 (also referred to as “mode 1” ) is a gNB-based mono-static sensing mode. In the sensing mode 1, a sensing signal is transmitted by a network node, e.g., gNB, and received / measured by the network node itself, may be referred to as transmission and receiving point (TRP) mono-static mode sometimes.

[0056] Sensing mode 2 (also referred to as “mode 2” ) is a gNB-based bi-static sensing mode. In the sensing mode 2, a sensing signal is transmitted by network node A and received / measured by network node B, may be referred to as TRP-TRP bi-static sensing mode sometimes.

[0057] Sensing mode 3 (also referred to as “mode 3” ) is a gNB-to-UE-based bi-static sensing mode. In the sensing mode 3, a sensing signal is transmitted by a network node and received / measured by UE, may be referred to as TRP-UE bi-static mode sometimes.

[0058] Sensing mode 4 (also referred to as “mode 4” ) is a UE-to-gNB-based bi-static sensing mode. In the sensing mode 4, a sensing signal is transmitted by UE and received / measured by the UE itself, may be referred to as UE-TRP bi-static mode sometimes.

[0059] Sensing mode 5 (also referred to as “mode 5” ) is a UE-based mono-static sensing mode. In the sensing mode 5, a sensing signal is transmitted by UE and received / measured by the UE, may be referred to as UE mono-static mode sometimes.

[0060] Sensing mode 6 (also referred to as “mode 6” ) is a UE-based bi-static sensing mode. In the sensing mode 6, a sensing signal is transmitted by UE A and received / measured by UE B, may be referred to as UE-UE bi-static mode sometimes.

[0061] It is to be understood that the above sensing modes may be used in any combination or separately.

[0062] It would be appreciated that the sensing modes illustrated in FIG. 2 are examples only and there may be many other sensing modes. It would be appreciated that more than one second communication device may be involved in a sensing service. It can be seen from the sensing modes in FIG. 2 that there may be various combinations of the devices which are to measure a sensing signal.

[0063] Regarding the study on channel modelling for Integrated Sensing And Communication (ISAC) for NR, the focus of the study is to define channel modelling aspects to support object detection and / or tracking. The study may aim at a common modelling framework capable of detecting and / or tracking the following example objects and to enable them to be distinguished from unintended objects: UAVs, humans indoors and outdoors, automotive vehicles (at least outdoors) , automated guided vehicles (e.g. in indoor factories) , and objects creating hazards on roads / railways, with a minimum size dependent on frequency.

[0064] All of the six sensing modes, as discussed with respect to FIG. 2, may be considered (i.e. TRP-TRP bistatic, TRP monostatic, TRP-UE bistatic, UE-TRP bistatic, UE-UE bistatic, UE monostatic) .

[0065] FIG. 3 illustrates a signaling flow 300 of a procedure of sensing resource allocation in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 300 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1A, for example, by using the first device 110, the second device 120 and the third device 130.

[0066] In the signaling flow 300, the second device 120 transmits (315) first configuration information and / or second configuration information to the first device 110. The first configuration information is related to a first sensing resource common for a plurality of devices. For purpose of discussion the first sensing resource may be also referred to as common sensing resource or common resource in embodiments of the present disclosure. The second configuration information is related to a second sensing resource specific to a third device 130. For purpose of discussion the first sensing resource may be also referred to as dedicated sensing resource or dedicated resource in embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0067] The first configuration information comprises information about sensing on the first sensing resource, for example, but not limited to, a pattern of the first sensing  resource, sequence information of a first sensing signal to be transmitted on the first sensing resource, and / or the like. The pattern of the first sensing resource may indicate, for instance, a period, a duration, an offset, a subcarrier spacing (SCS) , or a cyclic prefix (CP) for sensing on the first sensing resource.

[0068] The sequence information of the first sensing signal may include, for example, but not limited to, a number of sequence identifications (IDs) of the first sensing signal, a sequence length of a sequence corresponding to one of the sequence IDs, and / or the like.

[0069] In some example embodiments, the sequence IDs may be determined based on an identification of the first device 110 and a time interval between a current time point and an initial time point. The initial time point may be a time point at which a sensing mode is entered initially.

[0070] The sequence length represents the length of a sequence (indicated by a sequence ID) of the first sensing signal. The sequence length included in the sequence information may be determined based on the number of sequence IDs which has a predefined value.

[0071] In some example embodiments, the second configuration information may include, but not limited to, a periodic resource, a semi-persistent resource, an aperiodic resource, a sensing mode, information about a sensing transmitter and a sensing receiver, alone or in combination.

[0072] The first device 110 receives (320) the first configuration information and / or the second configuration information from the second device. With the received configuration information, the first device 110 transmits (325) the first sensing signal on the first sensing resource based on the first configuration information, and / or a second sensing signal on the second sensing resource based on the second configuration information. Accordingly, the third device 130 receives the first sensing signal on the first sensing resource and / or the second sensing signal on the second sensing resource.

[0073] In some example embodiments, the first configuration information and / or the second configuration information may be determined by the second device 120 based capability information from the first device 110. In some implementations, the first device 110 may transmit (305) its capability information to the second device 120. The capability information may include, for example, but not limited to, a capability for supporting Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) , a capability for supporting sidelink communication, a sensing radius, a location of the first device, alone or in combination.

[0074] Additionally, the third device 130 may transmit capability information of the third device 130 to the second device 120. The capability information of the third device 130 may include similar information as above capability information of the first device 110, except that the location reported in the capability information of the third device 130 is the location of the third device 130, instead of the location of the first device 110.

[0075] In some example embodiments, the first sensing resource may have various patterns. In an implementation, the first sensing resource may reuse resources for synchronization signal blocks (SSBs) for a communication between the first device and the third device. Details of the reuse of SSB will be discussed below with respect to FIG. 4A.

[0076] Alternatively, the first sensing resource may be a resource newly allocated for sensing. In some example implementations, the SCS for sensing on the first sensing resource may equal to for communication, or the duration for sensing on the first sensing resource may equal to a time length of one slot or a plurality of slots for communication.

[0077] In some example embodiments, a cyclic prefix (CP) for the sensing on the first sensing resource is Normal Cyclic Prefix (NCP) , and a first number of symbols are reserved for switching from sensing to communication. In such cases, the first number of symbols may be not less than the second number of symbols, and the symbols may be in terms of a symbol length for communication. Alternatively, the CP for the sensing on the first sensing resource is Extended Cyclic Prefix (ECP) , and no symbol is reserved or a second number of symbols are reserved for switching from sensing to communication.

[0078] In either the NCP cases or the ECP cases, the CP for the sensing on the first sensing resource may be the same as or longer than a CP configured for the communication. More details about the resource newly allocated for the first sensing signal will be discussed with respect to FIGS. 4B to 4F.

[0079] In some example embodiments, the third device 130 is different from the first device, for example, in the scenario of the sensing mode 6. In this case, the first device 110 may transmit the first sensing signal on the first sensing resource based on the first configuration information, and may establish a connection with the third device 130. The connection may include a sensing connection established based on a sensing result of the first sensing signal, or a communication connection with the third device. Then the first device 110 may transmit, to the third device 130, the second configuration information on  the connection and may then transmit the second sensing signal on the second sensing resource.

[0080] Additionally, in response to a Radio link failure (RLF) in the sensing connection between the first device 110 and the third device 130, the first device 110 may determine whether a further sensing connection is able to be established within a predefined time duration. If the further sensing connection is able to be established within the predefined time duration, the first device 110 may establish the further sensing connection with a fourth device based on a communication between the first device and the fourth device. Otherwise, if the further sensing connection is unable to be established within the predefined time duration, the first device 110 may stop sensing until receiving an indication activating a new sensing procedure. The fourth device may be same with the third device 130, or different with the third device 130.

[0081] As to the third device 130, it may receive the first sensing signal on the first sensing resource based on the first configuration information, establish at least one of: a sensing connection established based on a sensing result of the first sensing signal, or a communication connection with the first device. Then, the third device 130 may receive, from the first device 110, the second configuration information on the connection and receive, from the first device 110, the second sensing signal on the second sensing resource.

[0082] The above embodiments are mainly discussed in the sensing mode 6, that is, a terminal device acting as a sensing transmitter performs a sensing procedure with another terminal device acting as a sensing receiver. As an alternative to the sensing mode 6, embodiments of the present disclosure are also applicable to the sensing mode 5.

[0083] Specifically, in some example embodiments, the third device and the first device may be implemented at a single device, that is, in the scenario of the sensing mode 5. For the purposes of discussion, embodiments in such a scenario may be discussed with reference to FIG. 1B. In this case, the sensing transmitter, for example, the first device 110 in FIG. 1B, may transmit the first sensing signal on the first sensing resource common to devices based on the first configuration information. The sensing receiver, which is still the first device 110 may work in the FDD mode. The first device 110 may receive the first sensing signal on the common sensing resource (the first sensing resource) . The first device 110 may further transmit the second sensing signal on the second sensing resource.  The first device 110 may operate in the FDD mode, it may receive the second sensing signal on the second sensing resource transmitted by itself.

[0084] In some embodiments, in the sensing mode 5, the first sensing resource may be associated with, for example, but not limited to, a sensing range, a density of sensing nodes, or subcarrier spacing (SCS) for sensing, and / or other factors.

[0085] In addition, in the sensing mode 5, the sequence information of a first sensing signal may include, for example, a number of sequence IDs of the first sensing signal, a sequence length of a sequence corresponding to one of the sequence IDs, and / or the like. The sequence IDs may be determined in several ways. In an example, the sequence IDs may be determined based on an identification of the first device, a time interval between a current time point and an initial time point at which a sensing mode is entered initially, and a predefined sequence offset.

[0086] In view of the above, resource allocation schemes for UE-to-UE sensing modes, including the UE A-to-UE B and UE A-to-UE A sensing mode, are provided, which increase the effectivity of sensing scheduling.

[0087] FIGS. 4A to 4F illustrate schematic diagrams 400A-400F of first sensing resources in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure, respectively. The first sensing resource be used for transmitting the first sensing signal, e.g., a Type-II / B / 2 common sensing signal (type-I / A / 1 common sensing signal may be used for gNB-to-UE sensing mode) .

[0088] FIG. 4A illustrates embodiments in which the first sensing resource reuses the SSB block defined for synchronization of sidelink communication. In these embodiments, synchronization delay or sensing delay may be long, which is limited by a period (P) of the SSBs configured for sidelink communication.

[0089] As shown in diagram 400A of FIG. 4A, the SSBs 401, 402, 403 are reused for the first sensing resource. The SSBs start at a time offset (S) . Taking the SSB 402 as an example, a time duration (D) of an occasion for the SSB 402 may be a slot including a plurality of symbols in the time domain, in which the last symbol is a reserved gap and other symbols for Primary Synchronization Signal (PSS) , Secondary Synchronization Signal (SSS) , and Physical Broadcast Channel (PBCH) may be used for transiting the sensing signal.

[0090] Alternatively, in embodiments of FIG. 4B, a dedicated common resource may be defined for sensing, as the first sensing resource. For example, a period, a duration, an offset, a SCS, a CP and so on may be determined for the dedicated common resource. Based on the common resource, the third device 130 may be synchronized with the first device 110, or the third device may monitor the area periodically.

[0091] As shown in diagram 400B of FIG. 4B, time durations 411, 412, 413…may be allocated as the first sensing resource. The time durations 411, 412, 413 start at a time offset (S) and may be periodical, and a duration of one of the time durations 411, 412, 413 is denoted as “D” , e.g., 1 slot. The periodicity of the time durations 411, 412, 413 is denoted as “P” . Taking the SSB 412 as an example, the time duration (D) of the time duration 412 may be a slot including a plurality of symbols in the time domain.

[0092] In these embodiments, the CP of the first sensing resource is Normal Cyclic Prefix (NCP) , and a first number of symbols may be reserved for switching from sensing to communication. The first number may be 1, 2 or other suitable number. More specifically, in diagram 400B, the duration (D) may be 1 slot in terms of the SCS for the communication on the active bandwidth part (BWP) . The SCS for common resource for sensing may be same as the one for communication. For NCP, there may be two symbols are reserved for working mode switching from sensing to communication, or for working mode switching from communication to sensing.

[0093] As shown in FIG. 4B, there illustrate two patterns for the duration 412. In the first pattern, the last two symbols 414 and 415 are reserved gaps, which are reserved for switching from sensing to communication. Alternatively, in the second pattern, the first symbol 416 and the last symbol 417 are reserved gaps, wherein symbol 416 is reserved for switching from communication to sensing, and symbol 417 is reserved for switching from sensing to communication. As a further alternatively, only one symbol, for example, the symbol 417 may be reserved as a reserved gap for switching from sensing to communication.

[0094] Still referring to the first pattern in FIG. 4B, in addition to the last two symbols 414 and 415 which are reserved gaps, the remaining 12 symbols may be divided into several groups (e.g., 3 groups, 4 groups or 6 groups) to carry synchronization sequence (s) . As shown, the remaining 12 symbols in the time duration 412 are divided into 3 groups, each group including 4 symbols. In FIG. 4B, the four symbols denoted with “1” are  symbols in group 1, the four symbols denoted with “2” are symbols in group 2, and the four symbols denoted with “3” are symbols in group 3. Likewise, the time duration 413 may include 2 reserved gaps and 12 symbols. The 12 symbols may also be divided into 3 groups, which are denoted as group 4, group 5 and group 6. Each of the group 4, group 5 and group 6 may include 4 symbols.

[0095] In a NCP case, the last symbol may be reserved as a gap for working mode switching from sensing to communication. Other symbols may be divided into groups, each group including a predetermined number of symbols, for example, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 symbols. The remaining symbol, if any, may be not defined or reserved.

[0096] As for these groups, different group may have different Quasi-Colocation (QCL) information / Transmission Configuration Indicator (TCI) states. There may be 2, 3 or 4 symbols in one group composed of at least one of PSS for sensing (PSS-S) , SSS for sensing (SSS-S) , a reserved gap, or the like. The QCL information or a TCI state index in different periods may be ordered sequentially.

[0097] FIG. 4C illustrates cases where the CP of the first sensing resource is ECP, that is, no symbol is reserved for working mode switching from sensing to communication, and for working mode switching from communication to sensing, considering the CP length is sufficient for switching. As shown in diagram 400C of FIG. 4C, time durations 421, 422, 423…may be allocated as the first sensing resource. The time duration (D) 422 does not include any reserved gap, but includes 12 symbols divided into several groups (e.g., 3 groups, 4 groups or 6 groups) to carry synchronization sequence (s) . As for these groups, different group may have different Quasi-Colocation (QCL) information / Transmission Configuration Indicator (TCI) states. There may be 2, 3 or 4 symbols in one group composed of at least one of PSS for sensing (PSS-S) , SSS for sensing (SSS-S) , a reserved gap, or the like. The QCL information or a TCI state index in different periods may be ordered sequentially.

[0098] As an alternative to FIG. 4C, FIG. 4D illustrates another example of ECP, where time durations 431, 432, 433…may be allocated as the first sensing resource. In this example, one symbol is reserved for switching from sensing to communication, which is less than or equal to that reserved in case of NCP, considering the CP length is longer than that with NCP. As shown in diagram 400D of FIG. 4D, 12 symbols are divided into 3 groups / sets to carrier synchronization sequence, wherein different group has different  QCL information / TCI state.

[0099] In particular, a symbol may be reserved as a gap for beam switching between two adjacent groups / sets. The other 3 symbols in each group / set may be composed of at least one of PSS-S, SSS-S, reference signal for sensing (SS-S) , and so on. The QCL information / TCI state index in different period may be ordered sequentially.

[0100] As an alternative, the SCS for sensing may be larger than the SCS for communication. The SCS may be determined by the number of beams for sensing and the SCS for communication. The number of periods for a whole beam scanning for sensing may be reduced, a whole beam scanning means all the beams are used for sensing detection at least once. FIG. 4E illustrates cases where the SCS for sensing is larger than the SCS for communication.

[0101] As shown in the diagram 400E of FIG. 4E, time durations 441, 442, 443…may be allocated as the first sensing resource. In this example, the last symbol in terms of the communication SCS may be reserved for working mode switching from sensing to communication. In addition, a plurality of consecutive symbols (e.g., 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 consecutive symbols) in terms of sensing SCS may be defined as a resource group / set for synchronization. Taking the time duration 442 for example, it may include at least one of synchronization signal and gap (s) reserved for working mode switching. The gap (s) are indicated by 446 and 447 in FIG. 4. The remaining symbols, other than the synchronization signal and the gap (s) , in the time duration 442 may be reserved or undefined, as indicated by 444 and 445 in FIG. 4. The QCL information / TCI state index in different period may be ordered sequentially.

[0102] Specifically, the symbols for carrying the synchronization signal (synchronization sequence (s) ) may be divided into 6 symbol groups (also referred to as resource groups or resource sets) , indicated by the number “1” to “6” in FIG. 4E. Each of the 6 symbol groups may include a plurality of symbols, for example, 4 symbols as shown. It is to be understood that 4 symbols are just discussed for example, rather than suggesting any limitation. A symbol group may include more or less symbols than 4 symbols. The number of symbols in one symbol group may be 2, 3, 5, 6 or other suitable number.

[0103] As shown in FIG. 4E, in addition to the time duration 442, another time duration 443 may also include a plurality of consecutive symbols. The plurality of consecutive symbols may contain another 6 symbol groups, indicated by the number “7” to “12” in  FIG. 4E.

[0104] As a further alternative, FIG. 4F illustrates another example of the first sensing resource, where more than one slot in terms of SCS for communication is adopted, and the SCS for sensing is same as the one for communication. As shown in the diagram 400F of FIG. 4F, time durations 451, 452, 453, 454, 455, and 456 may be allocated as the first sensing resource. In this example, the last symbol in terms of the communication SCS is reserved as a gap for working mode switching from sensing to communication. Other symbols may be divided into several groups, e.g., 6 groups (each group including 4 symbols) to carry synchronization sequence (s) . The number of other symbols reserved may be different with the previous scenarios.

[0105] FIG. 5 illustrates a signaling flow 500 of a procedure of sensing resource allocation in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 500 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1A, for example, by using the first device 110, the second device 120 and the third device 130.

[0106] In the embodiments discussed with reference to FIG. 5, it is assumed that both the first device 110 and the third device 130 are within the coverage of it’s serving node, e.g., the second device 120. For purpose of discussion, the first device 110 is discussed as a terminal device (e.g., a UE) for example. The third device 130 is also discussed as a terminal device (e.g., a UE) for example. The second device 120 may be discussed as a gNB, a SF node or a LMF node, for example.

[0107] At 502A, the second device 120 transmits the first configuration information and / or the second configuration information to the first device 110. Optionally, at 502B, the second device 120 may transmit the first configuration information and / or the second configuration information to the third device 130, since the third device 130 is also in the coverage of the second device 120.

[0108] At 504, the first device 110 may transmit a first sensing signal (also referred to as “common sensing signal” ) on the first sensing resource (also referred to as “common sensing resource” ) to the third device 130, and the third device 130 may detect, at 506, the common sensing signal for the sensing mode between two UEs.

[0109] At 508, the first device 110 and the third device 130 establish a connection  therebetween. The connection may be, for instance, a sensing connection and / or a communication connection, e.g., a sidelink connection between two UEs.

[0110] At 510, the first device 110 may transmit the second sensing signal (also referred to as “dedicated sensing signal” ) on the second sensing resource (also referred to as “dedicated sensing resource” ) .

[0111] The third device 130 may obtain the sensing result based on the dedicated sensing signal and may transmit at 512A the sensing result to the first device 110 and / or transmit at 512B the sensing result to the second device 120.

[0112] FIG. 6 illustrates a signaling flow 600 of a procedure of sensing resource allocation in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 600 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1A, for example, by using the first device 110, the second device 120 and the third device 130.

[0113] In contrast to FIG. 5, in the embodiments of FIG. 6, it is assumed that the first device 110 is within the coverage of its serving node, e.g., the second device 120, but the third device 130 is out of the coverage, for example, due to entering a coverage hole or moving. For purpose of discussion, the first device 110 is discussed as a terminal device (e.g., a UE) for example. The third device 130 is also discussed as a terminal device (e.g., a UE) for example. The second device 120 may be discussed as a gNB, a SF node or a LMF node, for example.

[0114] At 602, the second device 120 transmits the first configuration information and / or the second configuration information to the first device 110. Different from embodiments of FIG. 5, in embodiments of FIG. 6, since the third device 130 is out of the coverage of the second device 120, no configuration information is transmitted from the second device 120 to the third device 130.

[0115] At 604, the first device 110 may transmit a first sensing signal (also referred to as “common sensing signal” ) on the first sensing resource (also referred to as “common sensing resource” ) to the third device 130, and the third device 130 may detect, at 606, the common sensing signal for the sensing mode between two UEs.

[0116] At 608, the first device 110 and the third device 130 establish a connection therebetween. The connection may be, for instance, a sensing connection and / or a  communication connection, e.g., a sidelink connection between two UEs.

[0117] At 610, the first device 110 may transmit the second configuration information about the dedicated sensing resource / dedicated sensing signal to the third device 130.

[0118] At 612, the first device 110 may transmit the second sensing signal (also referred to as “dedicated sensing signal” ) on the second sensing resource (also referred to as “dedicated sensing resource” ) to the third device 130.

[0119] The third device 130 may obtain the sensing result based on the dedicated sensing signal and may transmit at 614 the sensing result to the first device 110. The first device 110 may then report, at 616, the sensing result to the second device 120.

[0120] In the above embodiments, since one device (the first device 110) is within the coverage, and the other one (the third device 130) is outside of coverage (coverage hole) , the one within the coverage may be indicated to be a transmitting (Tx) sensing node, the other one is expected to be a receiving (Rx) sensing node.

[0121] If a RLF happens to the link between the first device 110 and the third device 130, the first device 110 may, on the one hand, try to build a sensing connection via detecting the common sensing signal defined for the sensing mode 6 (UE A to UE B) . One the other hand, the first device 110 may continue the sensing procedure on periodic sensing resource indicated for sensing mode 6 previously, and stop the sensing procedure on semi-persistent and aperiodic sensing resource indicated for the sensing mode 6 previously.

[0122] If sensing connection isn’ t built in a given time, then it turns off sensing module until received new sensing signaling via communication link. The sensing connection may be built based on sidelink communication link.

[0123] In some embodiments, dedicated sensing resource (s) may be indicated to the Rx sensing node via the sidelink communication link.

[0124] In addition to the above, in the case where both the first device 110 and the third device 130 are outside of coverage, for example, if both of them enter a coverage hole, they may perform as below.

[0125] If the first device 110 (e.g., a UE) is in a sensing procedure before RLF for the link between the first device 110 and the third device 130, it may continue the sensing on  periodic sensing resource indicated for sensing mode 6 previously, for example, the first device 110 may transmit a sensing signal or the third device 130 may receive the sensing signal.

[0126] The first device 110 may try to build a sensing connection via the common sensing signal defined for the sensing mode 6 or via a sidelink (SL) communication connection. This procedure may involve building a sensing connection with other device (e.g., UE) . If the sensing connection isn’ t built within a given time duration, then the first device 110 or the third device 130 may stop sensing module until receiving a new sensing indication.

[0127] On the other hand, if the first device 110 isn’ t in the sensing procedure before RLF for the link between the first device 110 and the third device 130, it may try to build a sensing connection via detecting a common sensing signal defined for sensing mode 6 or via a SL communication connection. If the sensing connection isn’ t built within a given time duration, then the first device 110 or the third device 130 may stop sensing module until receiving a new sensing indication.

[0128] More details of embodiments of the present disclosure will be discussed below.

[0129] Sensing from UE A to UE B

[0130] In the following discussions, the first device 110 may be discussed as a terminal device, e.g., a UE (denoted as “UE A” in some cases) , and the third device 130 may be also discussed as a terminal device, e.g., a UE (denoted as “UE B” in some cases) . The second device 120 may be discussed as a network device, which is referred to as a gNB, SF node, or LMF node, for example.

[0131] 1. Common sensing resource

[0132] In some implementations of the present disclosure, the first sensing signal may be discussed as a common sensing signal or a Type-II / B / 2 common sensing signal for example, where type-I / A / 1 common sensing signal may be used for gNB-to-UE sensing mode. It is to be understood that the first sensing signal refers to a sensing signal common for a plurality of devices. The name of the first sensing signal is just for illustration, rather than suggesting any limitation.

[0133] The sensing SCS may be different from the SCS for communication. In an example, the ratio of the sensing SCS and communication SCS may be larger than or equal  to a predetermined ratio . For instance,

[0134] sensing SCS  / communication SCS >=1 / D,

[0135] where D is duration of common sensing resource, or the number of slots for the common sensing resource in terms of communication SCS, to make sure at least one sensing slot is included in the duration for common sensing signal.

[0136] The design of a pattern of the common sensing signal may include, for example, design of a period, a duration, an offset, a SCS, a cyclic prefix (CP) , and so son. This may take the pattern design of a sensing signal for communication as a reference by considering the number of symbols in one period.

[0137] The CP type for sensing may be same as that configured for communication, or longer than that configured for communication when the SCS for sensing and communication are the same. In some cases, when the CP for communication is NCP, the CP for sensing (also referred to as sensing CP) may be NCP or ECP. When the CP for communication is ECP, the sensing CP can only be ECP.

[0138] In addition, in some embodiments, additional information may be carried on part of the resources for each resource group / set. Such additional information may include necessary information for sensing signal transmission / reception.

[0139] In addition to the above pattern of the first sensing resource, configuration information of the first sensing resource (i.e., the common sensing resource) may include sequence information of the first sensing signal to be transmitted on the first sensing resource. The sequence information may include a sequence ID of a reference signal for sensing. The reference signal may include, for instance, a synchronization signal for sensing. In that case, the sequence information may include a sensing synchronization signal ID.

[0140] In some embodiments, the sensing synchronization signal ID may be one of a set of {0, …, M} , M may be a positive integer, such as 111, 223 or 335.

[0141] In a case where M equals to 111, the sequence length may be 61 or 65, which corresponds to about 6 resource blocks (RBs) . In another case where M equals to 223 or 335, the sequence length may be 127, which corresponds to about 11 RBs.

[0142] Alternatively, in some embodiments, there may be no indication for M and / or  the sequence length in the configuration information. Instead, information about M and / or the sequence length may be defined in specification.

[0143] The sensing synchronization signal ID used by the first device 110 may be dynamic configured / determined by considering the mobility of UE / sensing node. It is to be understood that the probability of confliction ID (s) within a sensing monitoring area needs to be reduced.

[0144] In some embodiments, the sensing synchronization signal ID used by the first device 110 may be dynamic configured / determined. For example, there may be a default sensing synchronization signal ID, which is also referred to as an initial sensing synchronization signal ID, denoted as ID_ini. The ID_ini may be determined by: ID_ini = mod (UE-ID, M+1) ,

[0145] wherein UE-ID represents an identification of the first device 110.

[0146] After entering sensing mode initially, information related to time, location and / or other factors may be considered in the ID determination format to randomize the sensing synchronization sequence ID. For example, the sensing synchronization sequence ID (denoted as ID_new) may be updated as: ID_new=mod (ID_ini+Δt, M) ,

[0147] where Δt is a time gap between the current time point and a time point when entering the sensing mode, it may be in terms of slots or sub-frame or System Frame.

[0148] The sensing synchronization sequence ID may be configured by the second device 120, e.g., a gNB, based on the location information of the sensing node (e.g., the first device 110) . Moreover, it may be updated when the variation of UE / sensing node’s location is larger than a given value.

[0149] 2. Dedicated sensing resource

[0150] In some embodiments, both the first device 110 (e.g., UE A) and the third device 130 (e.g., UE B) may be in coverage of the second device 120 (e.g., gNB) , that is, both UEs are in coverage. The dedicated sensing resource may be indicated from gNB to UE A and UE B.

[0151] The indication of the dedicated sensing resource may be periodic, semi- persistent, or aperiodic. In the periodic case, the dedicated sensing resource may be transmitted via a Radio Resource Control (RRC) message. Alternatively, in the semi-persistent case, the dedicated sensing resource may be transmitted by means of a RRC message and a MAC CE (Medium Access Control Control Element) activation / deactivation. As a further alternative, in the aperiodic case, the dedicated sensing resource may be transmitted by means of a RRC message and a downlink information (DCI) activation.

[0152] Additionally, in some embodiments, the message or the indication for the dedicated sensing resource may further include information such as the sensing mode, the Tx / Rx scheme, and so on.

[0153] Sensing from UE A to UE A

[0154] In the following discussions, the first device 110 and the third device 130 may be implemented in a single device, which is discussed as a terminal device, e.g., a UE (denoted as “UE A” in some cases) . The second device 120 may be discussed as a network device, which is referred to as a gNB, SF node, or LMF node, for example.

[0155] The sensing from UE A to UE A corresponds to the sensing mode 5. In some embodiments, device supported FDD may be applied for the sensing mode 5. The transmission and the reception may be in the same frequency band. Before gNB / LMF / SF’s configuration for sensing mode, UE A may report its capability. In some implementations, only a UE which supports FDD will expect be configured with this sensing mode.

[0156] In some embodiments, only the targets within a range from R-delta to R+delta are sensed, where R represents a location of the sensing node (UE A for example) ; and delta represents a radius or a distance can be reached by the sensing node, which is a kind of capability of the sensing node.

[0157] In an implementation, the UE A reports its capability, and gNB configures a sensing range. The configured range may be no larger than the range indicated in the reported capability. If the configured range is larger than the reported one, the reported one will be applied. Alternatively, in the case where the configured range is larger than the reported one, the sensing indication may be considered as an invalid one, and a related error may be reported from the first device 110 to the second device 120, e.g., gNB / SF / LMF.

[0158] 1. Common sensing resource

[0159] In the sensing mode 5, the common sensing resource, similar as discussed in the mode 6, may be resource common to all the UEs used the same resource set / group to transmit / receive sensing signal.

[0160] The number of resources used for a common sensing signal transmission and reception may be dynamically determined by a UE by considering the sensing requirement.

[0161] The common sensing resource for the sensing mode 5 may be from a periodical resource set, and may be shared with that defined for the sensing mode 6. For example, the common sensing resource for the sensing mode 5 may correspond to one or more slots in terms of slot defined for communication, and it may have the same RBs / bandwidth as that of common sensing signal for sensing mode 6.

[0162] Regarding the signal format / sequence to be transmitted on the common sensing resource for the sensing mode 5, it may be associated with the sensing capability of the first device 110 (UE A) , such as sensing range, or the number of sensing nodes in the sensing monitoring area.

[0163] In an example, if there is a long sensing range or a high density of sensing nodes, a long sequence may be used which occupies more sensing resources, such as more resource elements (REs) in frequency domain, or more symbols in time domain.

[0164] In another example, if there is a short sensing range or a small density of sensing nodes, a short sequence may be used which occupies fewer sensing resources, e.g., less REs in frequency domain, or less symbols in time domain.

[0165] For the common sensing resource for the sensing mode 5, different SCS can be used to realize larger (smaller) bandwidth and / or longer (shorter) time duration. The time duration may be in terms of slots of a reference SCS, such as the one used for communication, or in terms of samples under a sampling rate (the position in frequency is fixed) .

[0166] In the sensing mode 5, a sequence ID for the sensing signal (that is, the first sensing signal or the common sensing signal) to be transmitted on the first sensing resource may be the same as the one of the common sensing signal for the sensing mode 6. Alternatively, the sequence ID may be obtained by adding an offset based on the one for common sensing signal for the sensing mode 6.

[0167] Specifically, in some implementations, the signal format or the signal sequence ID (denoted as IDm5) of the common sensing signal for the sensing mode 5 may be determined as follows: IDm5=IDM6+IDoffset,

[0168] where IDM6 represents the sequence ID of common sensing signal transmitted by the UE in sensing mode 6; IDoffset represents a predefine value to make a difference between the two sequences IDM5 and IDM6, and may be larger than M+1, where M=111, 223, or 335.

[0169] In some implementations, when IDoffset=0, the above sequence ID will be shared between sensing mode 5 and the sensing mode 6.

[0170] 2. Dedicated sensing resource

[0171] The dedicated sensing resource for the sensing mode 5 may be configured by the second device 120, e.g., gNB. Some of the configuration information about the dedicated sensing resource for the sensing mode 5 are similar as that for the sensing mode 6, which are not repeated here.

[0172] In response to a RLF occurs for the link between the first device 110 and the second device 120, if the first device 110 (UE A) is outside of the coverage, it may reuse or continue using the sensing resource configured before the RLF. Meanwhile, the first device 110 may store a measurement result of the sensing, and report the measurement result of the sensing when the connection is rebuild within a time duration. The connection may include a sensing connection and / or a communication connection with another sensing node (e.g., a gNB or other UE) . If no connection is established within a predetermined time duration, the first device 110 may drop the measurement result and stop sensing.

[0173] FIG. 7 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 700 implemented at a first device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 700 will be described from the perspective of the first device 110 in FIG. 1A.

[0174] At block 710, the first device 110 receives, from a second device, at least one of first configuration information related to a first sensing resource common for a plurality of devices, or second configuration information related to a second sensing resource  specific to a third device. The first configuration information comprises at least one of a pattern of the first sensing resource or sequence information of a first sensing signal.

[0175] At block 720, the first device 110 transmits the first sensing signal on the first sensing resource based on the first configuration information or a second sensing signal on the second sensing resource based on the second configuration information.

[0176] In some example embodiments, the first sensing resource reuses synchronization signal blocks (SSBs) for a communication between the first device and the third device.

[0177] In some example embodiments, the SCS for sensing on the first sensing resource is equal to for communication, or the duration for sensing on the first sensing resource equals to a time length of one slot or a plurality of slots for communication.

[0178] In some example embodiments, a cyclic prefix (CP) for the sensing on the first sensing resource is Normal Cyclic Prefix (NCP) , and a first number of symbols are reserved for switching from sensing to communication. Alternatively, the CP for the sensing on the first sensing resource is Extended Cyclic Prefix (ECP) , and no symbol is reserved or a second number of symbols are reserved for switching from sensing to communication. The first number of symbols is not less than the second number of symbols, and the symbols are in terms of a symbol length for communication.

[0179] In some example embodiments, the CP for the sensing on the first sensing resource is the same as or longer than a CP configured for the communication.

[0180] In some example embodiments, the sequence information of a first sensing signal comprises at least one of: a number of sequence identifications (IDs) of the first sensing signal, or a sequence length of a sequence corresponding to one of the sequence IDs.

[0181] In some example embodiments, the sequence IDs are determined based on, an identification of the first device, and a time interval between a current time point and an initial time point at which a sensing mode is entered initially.

[0182] In some example embodiments, the sequence length is determined based on the number of sequence IDs which has a predefined value.

[0183] In some example embodiments, the second configuration information comprises at least one of: a periodic resource, a semi-persistent resource, an aperiodic resource, a  sensing mode, or information about a sensing transmitter and a sensing receiver.

[0184] In some example embodiments, the third device is different from the first device, and the first device may transmit the first sensing signal on the first sensing resource based on the first configuration information; establish a connection with the third device, the connection comprising at least one of: a sensing connection established based on a sensing result of the first sensing signal, or a communication connection with the third device; and transmit, to the third device, the second configuration information on the connection; and transmit, to the third device, the second sensing signal on the second sensing resource.

[0185] In some example embodiments, the first device 110, in response to a Radio link failure (RLF) in the sensing connection, determines whether a further sensing connection is able to be established within a predefined time duration; in response to that the further sensing connection is able to be established within the predefined time duration, establishes the further sensing connection with a fourth device based on a communication between the first device and the fourth device; and in response to that the further sensing connection is unable to be established within the predefined time duration, stops sensing until receiving an indication activating a sensing procedure.

[0186] In some example embodiments, the third device and the first device are implemented at a single device, and the first device may transmit the first sensing signal on the first sensing resource based on the first configuration information; and transmit the second sensing signal on the second sensing resource via the sensing connection.

[0187] In some example embodiments, the first sensing resource is associated with at least one of: a sensing range, a density of sensing nodes, or subcarrier spacing (SCS) for sensing.

[0188] In some example embodiments, the sequence information of a first sensing signal comprises at least one of: a number of sequence identifications (IDs) of the first sensing signal, or a sequence length of a sequence corresponding to one of the sequence IDs, and wherein the sequence IDs are determined based on an identification of the first device, a time interval between a current time point and an initial time point at which a sensing mode is entered initially, and a predefined sequence offset.

[0189] In some example embodiments, the first device 110 further transmits, to the second device, capability information of the first device comprising at least one of: a  capability for supporting Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) , a capability for supporting sidelink communication, a sensing radius, or a location of the first device.

[0190] FIG. 8 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 800 implemented at a second device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 800 will be described from the perspective of the second device 120 in FIG. 1A.

[0191] At block 810, the second device 120 transmits, to a first device, at least one of first configuration information related to a first sensing resource common for a plurality of devices, or second configuration information related to a second sensing resource specific to a third device. The first configuration information comprises at least one of a pattern of the first sensing resource or sequence information of a first sensing signal.

[0192] In some example embodiments, the first sensing resource reuses synchronization signal blocks (SSBs) for a communication between the first device and the third device.

[0193] In some example embodiments, the SCS for sensing on the first sensing resource is equal to a SCS for communication, or the duration for sensing on the first sensing resource equals to a time length of one slot or a plurality of slots for communication.

[0194] In some example embodiments, a cyclic prefix (CP) for the sensing on the first sensing resource is Normal Cyclic Prefix (NCP) , and a first number of symbols are reserved for switching from sensing to communication. Alternatively, the CP for the sensing on the first sensing resource is Extended Cyclic Prefix (ECP) , and no symbol is reserved or a second number of symbols are reserved for switching from sensing to communication. The first number of symbols may be not less than the second number of symbols, and the symbols are in terms of a symbol length for communication.

[0195] In some example embodiments, the CP for the sensing on the first sensing resource is the same as or longer than a CP configured for the communication.

[0196] In some example embodiments, the sequence information of a first sensing signal comprises at least one of: a number of sequence identifications (IDs) of the first sensing signal, or a sequence length of a sequence corresponding to one of the sequence IDs.

[0197] In some example embodiments, the sequence IDs are determined based on an identification of the first device, and a time interval between a current time point and an  initial time point at which a sensing mode is entered initially.

[0198] In some example embodiments, the sequence length is determined based on the number of sequence IDs which has a predefined value.

[0199] In some example embodiments, the second configuration information comprises at least one of: a periodic resource, a semi-persistent resource, an aperiodic resource, a sensing mode, or information about a sensing transmitter and a sensing receiver.

[0200] In some example embodiments, the second device is further caused to: receive, from the first device or the third device, capability information comprising at least one of: a capability for supporting Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) , a capability for supporting sidelink communication, a sensing radius, or a location of the first device or the third device.

[0201] FIG. 9 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 900 implemented at a third device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 900 will be described from the perspective of the third device 130 in FIG. 1A.

[0202] At block 910, the third device 130 receives, from a first device or a second device, at least one of first configuration information related to a first sensing resource common for a plurality of devices, or second configuration information related to a second sensing resource specific to a third device. The first configuration information comprises at least one of a pattern of the first sensing resource or sequence information of a first sensing signal.

[0203] At block 920, the third device 130 receives the first sensing signal on the first sensing resource based on the first configuration information or a second sensing signal on the second sensing resource based on the second configuration information.

[0204] In some example embodiments, the first sensing resource reuses synchronization signal blocks (SSBs) for a communication between the first device and the third device.
