[0094] Network slicing is a network feature (e.g., in 5G networks) that can used to support different services using the same underlying mobile network infrastructure. This is described, for example, in 3GPP TS 38.300 (e.g., 3GPP TS 38.300 V18.0.0) . Network slices can differ in their service requirements (e.g., Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) and enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) ) or in the tenant that provides those services.

[0095] A network slice is uniquely identified via an S-NSSAI (Single-Network Slice Selection Assistance Information) . In some embodiments, a UE (User Equipment) is allowed to be simultaneously connected and served by at most eight S-NSSAIs . In addition, each cell may support tens or even hundreds of S-NSSAIs. A tracking area may support up to 1024 network slices.

[0096] In the present disclosure, a network slice may refer to slice.

[0097] In the following various example embodiments are explained with reference to communication devices (e.g., UEs) that are capable of communication with a communications network. Before explaining in detail the embodiments of the methods and apparatuses of the present  disclosure, a communications network comprising a 5th generation communication system (5GS) , a radio access network and a core network (5GC) thereof, are briefly explained with reference to FIG. 1.

[0098] FIG. 1 shows a schematic representation of a communications network comprising a cellular or mobile communication system (e.g., a 5G communication system (5GS) , and data network. The 5GS may comprise a radio access network such as a 5G radio access network (5G-RAN) or next generation radio access network (NG-RAN) , a 5G core network (5GC) . An application function may be deployed in the 5GS as trusted application function or may be deployed or hosted on one or more application servers of the data network. Such application functions are untrusted application functions. The 5GS connects a UE to a data network via the access network and the 5GC (e.g., a UPF of the 5GC) .

[0099] The 5GC may comprise the following network functions: Network Slice Selection Function (NSSF) ; Network Exposure Function; Network Repository Function (NRF) ; Policy Control Function (PCF) ; UDM; Application Function (AF) ; Authentication Server Function (AUSF) ; an AMF; and Session Management Function (SMF) , and a user plane function (UPF) . FIG. 1 also shows the various interfaces (N1, N2 etc. ) that may be implemented between the various elements of the system.

[0100] The format of an S-NSSAI is shown in FIG. 2. An S-NSSAI may include both a Slice Service Type (SST) field 200 and a Slice Differentiator (SD) field 202. In some example S-NSSAIs, an SST field has 8 bits and an SD field has 24 bits, such that the total length of the S-NSSAI is 32 bits..

[0101] The SST field may have standardized and non-standardized values. In an example, values 0 to 127 belong to a standardized SST range. For instance, SST value of 1 may indicate that the slice is suitable for handling of 5G eMBB, 2 for handling of URLLC, etc. According to some examples, values for an SD may be operator-defined.

[0102] An NSSAI may comprise at least one S-NSSAI. Different types of NSSAI include:

[0103] ● Allowed NSSAI: NSSAI provided by a serving Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) during e.g. a Registration procedure, indicating the S-NSSAI values the UE could use in the Serving PLMN for the current Registration Area;

[0104] ● Configured NSSAI: NSSAI provisioned in the UE applicable to one or more PLMNs;

[0105] ● Pending NSSAI: NSSAI provided by the Serving PLMN during a Registration procedure, indicating the S-NSSAI (s) for which the network slice-specific authentication and authorization procedure is pending;

[0106] ● Requested NSSAI: NSSAI provided by the UE to the Serving PLMN during registration;

[0107] ● Subscribed S-NSSAI: S-NSSAI based on subscriber information, which a UE is subscribed to use in a PLMN;

[0108] ● Partially Allowed NSSAI: Indicating the S-NSSAIs values that a UE could use in the Serving PLMN or SNPN in some of the TAs in the current Registration Area. Each S-NSSAI in the Partially Allowed NSSAI is associated with a list of TAs where the S-NSSAI is supported. Partially Allowed NSSAI is further discussed in 3GPP TS23.501.

[0109] When / if a UE is roaming, such that the UE is connected to a visited / virtual PLMN (VPLMN) as a serving PLMN, a mapping between network slices of Home PLMN (HPLMN) (hereinafter HPLMN slices) of the UE and those of VPLMN (hereinafter, VPLMN slices) may be provided to the UE. Specifically, the UE subscription information in UDM may include HPLMN, S-NSSAIs. When / if a UE is in a VPLMN, an AMF of the VPLMN communicates with UDM and gets information about the subscribed slices for the UE. An AMF of the VPLMN determines a mapping of HPLMN slices to VPLMN slices. The AMF of the VPLMN may give the UE a configured NSSAI including a mapping of VPLMN S-NSSAIs to the HPLMN S-NSSAIs. When / if a UE sends a requested NSSAI, it includes the mapping of each HPLMN-VPLMN S-NSSAIs requested. The allowed NSSAI may be sent with a mapping to HPLMN S-NSSAIs. The UE may send a Requested NSSAI including the slices that the UE desires to get configured in the Allowed NSSAI. Requested NSSAI can include the slices that are in the Configured NSSAI of the UE.

[0110] Wireless Access and Backhaul (WAB) can be used to provide a backhaul over conventional Protocol Data Unit (PDU) sessions. In some examples, WAB may be used interchangeably to Vehicle Mounted Relay (VMR) or Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) or mobile WAB (MWAB) .

[0111] A WAB node may comprise a WAB-UE or WAB-Mobile Termination (WAB-MT) and a WAB-gNB (or more broadly, a WAB base station node) . An example deployment of a WAB node 306 in relation to a serving network is illustrated in FIG. 3. WAB-node 306 comprises of WAB gNB 308 and WAB-MT 310 (WAB Mobile Termination, a. k. aWAB-UE) that provides the radio connection for the NR backhaul (BH) to a second base station 314 (donor gNB) . UE 204 may connect to WAB-GNB 308. The second base station 314 may connect to Backhaul (BH) UPF  316 and AMF 320. A UE PDU session 318 may be established between UE 304 and UPF for UE 324.

[0112] A BH connection for the WAB-gNB 308 is provided by a PDU session 312 established for the WAB-MT 310 to the serving network. WAB-gNB NG interfaces (for both control and user planes) are transparently forwarded through the serving network. UE 304 connected to the WAB node 306 sees the WAB cell like a normal cell and UE 304 can establish PDU session 318 to the UE core network (e.g., NextGen Core, NGC) using signaling procedures. The WAB deployment is therefore transparent to UEs, and no enhancements are needed for legacy UEs. A WAB network serving the actual UEs and the WAB node may be different than the serving network that serves the donor gNB 314.

[0113] FIG. 4 shows an example WAB user plane protocol stack. Example protocol stacks are shown between UE 404, WAB node 406, donor gNB 414, WAB’s UPF 416 and the UE’s UPF 422. UE 404 is connected to WAB node 406 by an NR-Uu interface. WAB node 406 is connected to donor gNB 414 by an NR-Uu interface.

[0114] Each UE connected to a WAB node may have a different allowed NSSAI configuration and / or a different configured NSSAI configuration. In other words, each UE may have a different Allowed NSSAI, meaning that the slices in the Allowed NSSAI are not the same for each UE. According to some examples, each UE may be able to utilize up to 8 slices simultaneously. PDU sessions of a UE may be associated with different slices, and each PDU session is associated with a slice. There is therefore a possibility that current UE limits on allowed slices (e.g., a limit of 8 network slices per UE) would be exceeded if a WAB-MT tries to have different PDU sessions considering all slices of the UEs connected to WAB-gNB. For example, in an example where the WAB-MT is limited to having a maximum of 8 network slices, if 10 UEs connected to a WAB node have 10 different slices in their allowed NSSAI, WAB-MT cannot request and have those 10 in the allowed NSSAI of the WAB-MT, because this would exceed the WAB-MT allowed NSSAI limit. Some examples described below describe a method mapping network slices to one another for avoiding UE limits for a number of slices in allowed NSSAI for a WAB node (e.g., for the WAB-MT) being exceeded. Some examples use the mapping method without having to increase a maximum number of allowed or configured NSSAI used in current standards. Some examples also describe a mapping method where the serving PLMN of the WAB-MT is different to the serving PLMN of the UE.

[0115] According to some examples, mapping information between at least one network slice for a WAB node and one or more network slices of at least one user equipment. The mapping may  be from the WAB node slice (s) to the UE network slice (s) . The mapping (mapping information) may be from the UE network slice (s) to the WAB node slice (s) . The configuration may be provided to the WAB node (in some cases, to the WAB-MT) by an AMF or OAM.

[0116] In some examples, by looking at allowed NSSAI of UEs connected to a WAB node (e.g., to a WAB-gNB) , the WAB node (e.g., the WAB-MT) can use the mapping information to request the mapped slice to be in the allowed NSSAI of the WAB-MT. The UE may send a Requested NSSAI including the slices that the UE desires to get configured in the Allowed NSSAI. Requested NSSAI can include the slices that are in the Configured NSSAI of the UE. This can be performed even before a PDU session is established for a UE. This enables faster service to the UE, as the UE does not have to wait for the WAB-MT to request for the slice to be included in the Allowed NSSAI before establishing a PDU session using the mapped slice.

[0117] Alternatively, the WAB node (e.g., WAB-MT) can request the mapped slice to be in the allowed NSSAI of the WAB-MT when / if a PDU session is created by a UE or a UE with an existing PDU session joins a cell served by the WAB node (e.g., the UE with the existing PDU session is handed over from another cell) .

[0118] In some embodiments, the mapping information may describe a default slice that can be used to map one or more UE slices that have no explicit mapping to a WAB node slice. In some examples, the default mapping slice may be mapped to (only) when / if the number of slices to be used reaches the threshold of the Allowed NSSAI (e.g., 8) . For example, a WAB-MT can serve the slices requested by the UE until 7 different slices are there in the Allowed NSSAI of the WAB-MT. From that on, when / if a UE request yet another different slice, WAB-MT can start mapping that to the default slice. The default slice can be included in the mapping information. This default slice may comprise a slice picked by WAB-MT, in case any UE connected to WAB-gNB has a slice and that UE slice cannot be mapped to any WAB-MT slice in the mapping information.

[0119] The WAB-gNB can send a list of allowed slices of UE (S) to the WAB-MT (e.g., as part of Attention (AT) commands or as an application interface) . The WAB-MT can then map the list of slices to its allowed list, or enhance the allowed list of the WAB-MT.

[0120] Some examples provide an N: 1 mapping from UE slices to WAB-MT slices. More than one UE network slice can be mapped to a WAB-MT network slice. This can be used to avoid having to use more than the maximum number of allowed network slices for the WAB-MT.

[0121] In a roaming scenario of the WAB node, a WAB-MT can assume the same HPLMN to VPLMN slice mapping it received. For example, a WAB-MT can check the allowed NSSAI of the UEs served and maps those slices (which are HPLMN for WAB-MT) to VPLMN slices for which it received a mapping. A WAB-MT may receive a mapping of VPLMN to HPLMN slices, along with Allowed Slices in VPLMN, and this mapping of VPLMN to HPLMN slice may be used to map UE slices to WAB-MT slices.

[0122] In a further example, allowed slices (e.g., allowed NSSAI) of the WAB node (e.g., of the WAB-MT) can be pre-configured based on the used slices of UEs in an area and a known trajectory of the WAB node.

[0123] In some examples, instead or in addition to using the allowed NSSAI of UE, the partially allowed NSSAI can be mapped to WAB node network slice (s) .

[0124] According to some examples, the mapping information comprises information mapping the at least one network slice for the apparatus to at least one of: Quality of Service parameters for the at least one user equipment; or Data Network Names of the at least one user equipment. In other words, on top of the slice mapping, there could be additional criterion such as QoS and DNN of at least one user equipment in the mapping.

[0125] The mapping information can also be based on further information, such as QoS and DNN. For example, the mapping can contain one or more of S-NSSAI, QoS, DNN of UE mapped to an S-NSSAI (or possibly also QoS and DNN) .

[0126] FIG. 5 shows an example method flow for mapping WAB node network slice (s) with UE 504 network slice (s) and then establishing or modifying a PDU session for UE 504 using a WAB node. The WAB node may comprise WAB-gNB 508 and WAB-MT 510. In this example, WAB-gNB 508, donor gNB 514 and core network 530 are all part of PLMN1.

[0127] At 501, WAB-MT 510 registers with Core Network (CN) 530 of PLMN1. Upon successful registration, at 503 WAB-MT 510 establishes connection to Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) over a PDU session.

[0128] Two options for configuration of mapping information at the WAB node are shown in 505 and 507. At 505, OAM configures the WAB node with mapping information of between UE slices and WAB-MT 510 slices. In this example, WAB-MT network slice 1 is mapped to UE network slice 1, and WAB-MT slice 2 is mapped to UE slice B. WAB-MT network slice 1 may be the  same or different to UE network slice 1. In some embodiments, the mapping information may indicate that a default slice is used to map network slices of WAB-gNB 508 (or UEs being served by WAB) that could not be mapped to specific WAB-MT slices.

[0129] At 507, an AMF (not shown in FIG. 5, but part of CN 530) configures the WAB node with mapping information of between UE slices and WAB-MT 510 slices. In this example, WAB-MT network slice 1 is mapped to UE network slice 1, and WAB-MT slice 2 is mapped to UE slice B. In some embodiments, the mapping information may indicate that a default slice is used to map network slices of WAB-gNB 508 (or UEs being served by WAB) that could not be mapped to specific WAB-MT slices.

[0130] At 509, PLMN1 (donor gNB 514 and CN 530) configures WAB-MT 510 with Allowed NSSAI. In this example, WAB-MT 510 is provided with Allowed NSSAI that contains slice 1. At 511, UE 504 connects to WAB-gNB 508 and at 513 sends an initial UE message. Upon receiving the message sent at 511, at 515 PLMN1 provides UE 504 with an initial UE configuration via the WAB node. In this example, UE 504 is provided with Allowed NSSAI that contains slice B, which does not currently have an allowed mapped network slice for WAB-MT 510, as WAB-MT slice 2 is not in the allowed NSSAI for WAB-MT 510.

[0131] Two alternatives are shown at 517 to 521 and 527 and 531. In alternative 1 (517 to 521) , the WAB node determines the Allowed NSSAI of the UEs (including UE 504) connected to WAB-gNB 508. In this example, at 517 the WAB node determines that UE slice B in the allowed NSSAI for UE 504 does not have a mapped slice (WAB network slice 2) in the allowed NSSAI for the WAB node. The WAB node (e.g., WAB-MT 510) can then request at 519 that the mapped slice (in this example, WAB slice 2) to be in the Allowed NSSAI of the WAB-MT 510 (before even the need is there based on UE’s PDU session established) . At 521, requested WAB slice 2 is included in the Allowed NSSAI of WAB-MT 510.

[0132] At 523, UE 504 sends a PDU session establishment or modification request for UE slice B to PLMN1 CN 520, via the WAB node (e.g., via WAB-gNB 508) . A response to the request is received at 525.

[0133] In alternative 2 (527 to 531) , the WAB node determines the slices used in the PDU session created by UE 504. In this example, the WAB node determines that UE slice B in the allowed NSSAI for UE 504 does not have a mapped slice (WAB network slice 2) in the allowed NSSAI for the WAB node. The WAB node (e.g., WAB-MT 510) can then request at 529 that the mapped slice (in this example, WAB slice 2) to be in the Allowed NSSAI of the WAB-MT 510  (before even the need is there based on UE’s PDU session established) . At 531, requested WAB slice 2 is included in the Allowed NSSAI of WAB-MT 510. As opposed to alternative 1, in alternative 2 WAB-MT 510 requests mapped slice after the PDU session has established / modified for UE 504.

[0134] At 533, WAB node detects that UE 504 has a PDU Session of network slice B that is mapped to WAB node slice 2. This determination may be based on the mapping information (i.e., may be determined using the mapping information) . At 535, WAB-MT 510 requests establishment / modification of PDU session for the corresponding mapped slice (WAB node slice 2) . At 535, PDU Session Setup / Modification for the mapped WAB-MT 510’s slice is carried out. At 537, data packet transfer over the created / modified WAB-MT 510’s PDU session over the mapped slice of WAB-MT 510 take place. UE 504 may then receive Slice B data packets over Slice 2 of WAB-MT 510.

[0135] In the above example of FIG. 5, slice mapping information can be configured by OAM or AMF in the WAB node (WAB-MT 510) . In alternative 1, when / if a new UE 504 connects to the WAB node (e.g., WAB-gNB 508) , WAB-gNB 508 informs WAB-MT 510 of information including the Allowed / Configured Slices of the UE (e.g., UE 504) . WAB-gNB 508 may inform WAB-MT 510 of the slice information for the PDU sessions that UE 504 has. Such information may also be provided when / if a new PDU session is formed for a UE 504. WAB-MT 510 can then proceed to request the mapped slice based on UE slices, based on such information.

[0136] In alternative 2, when / if a new UE (e.g., UE 504) connects to WAB-gNB 508, WAB-gNB 508 informs WAB-MT 510 of information comprising Allowed / Configured Slices of the UE (e.g., UE 504) , along with the mapping slices based on the configuration. WAB-gNB 508 may then inform WAB-MT 510 regarding the slice information for the PDU sessions that the UE 504 has, along with the mapping slices based on the configuration. Such information may also be provided when / if a new PDU session is formed for a UE (e.g., UE 504) . WAB-MT 510 can then proceed to request the mapped slice based on UE slices, based on such information.

[0137] In some examples, mechanisms in WAB-MT 510 and / or WAB-gNB 508 may be present to enable exchanging such mapping information from one to the other. For example, based on a configuration, WAB-MT 510 can configure WAB-gNB 508 to perform the above operations of WAB-MT 510.

[0138] FIG. 6 shows an example method flow for mapping WAB node network slice (s) with UE 604 network slice (s) and then establishing or modifying a PDU session for UE 604 using a WAB  node. The WAB node may comprise WAB-gNB 608 and WAB-MT 610. In this example, WAB-gNB 608 and core network 632 are part of PLMN2. PLMN2 may be a HPLMN for the WAB node. Donor gNB 614 and core network 630 are part of PLMN1, which is a VPLMN for the WAB node.

[0139] At 601, WAB-MT 610 registers with Core Network (CN) 630 of PLMN1. Upon successful registration, WAB-MT 610 establishes connection to Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) over a PDU session.

[0140] At 603, PLMN1 (donor gNB 614 and PLMN CN) configured that WAB node with mapping information between HPLMN (PLMN2) and VPLMN (PLMN1) . This mapping information may be used by the WAB node (e.g., by WAB-MT 610) . An example of mapping may be:

[0141] WAB-MT VPLMN Slice 1 <-> WAB-MT HPLMN Slice A;

[0142] WAB-MT VPLMN Slice 2 <-> WAB-MT HPLMN Slice B

[0143] At 611, UE 604 connects to WAB-gNB 608 and at 613 sends an initial UE message to PLMN2 CN 632. Upon receiving the message sent at 611, at 615 PLMN2 CN 632 provides UE 604 with an initial UE configuration via the WAB node (WAB-gNB 608) . In this example, UE 604 is provided with Allowed NSSAI that contains slice B, which does not currently have an allowed mapped HPLMN network slice for WAB-MT 610, as WAB-MT slice 2 is not in the allowed NSSAI for WAB-MT 610.

[0144] Two alternatives are shown at 617 to 621 and 627 to 631. In alternative 1 (617 to 621) , the WAB node determines the Allowed NSSAI of the UEs (including UE 604) connected to WAB-gNB 608. In this example, at 617 the WAB node determines that UE slice B in the allowed NSSAI for UE 604 does not have a mapped VPLMN slice (WAB-MT VPLMN network slice 2) in the allowed NSSAI for the WAB node. The WAB node (e.g., WAB-MT 610) can then request at 619 that the mapped slice (in this example, WAB-MT VPLMN network slice 2) to be in the Allowed NSSAI of the WAB-MT 610 (before even the need is there based on UE’s PDU session established) . At 621, requested WAB-MT VPLMN network slice 2 is included in the Allowed NSSAI of WAB-MT 610.

[0145] At 623, UE 604 sends a PDU session establishment or modification request for UE slice B to PLMN2 CN 632, via the WAB node (e.g., via WAB-gNB 568) . A response to the request is received at 625.

[0146] In alternative 2 (627 to 631) , the WAB node determines the slices used in the PDU session created by UE 604. In this example, the WAB node determines that UE slice B in the allowed NSSAI for UE 604 does not have a mapped VPLMN network slice (WAB-MT VPLMN network slice 2) in the allowed NSSAI for the WAB node. The WAB node (e.g., WAB-MT 610) can then request at 629 that the mapped slice (in this example, WAB slice 2) to be in the Allowed NSSAI of the WAB-MT 610 (before even the need is there based on UE’s PDU session established) . At 631, requested WAB slice 2 is included in the Allowed NSSAI of WAB-MT 610. As opposed to alternative 1, in alternative 2 WAB-MT 610 requests the mapped slice to be in allowed NSSAI after the PDU session has established / modified for UE 604.

[0147] At 633, the WAB node detects that UE 604 has a PDU Session of network slice B that is mapped to WAB node slice 2. At 635, WAB-MT 610 requests establishment / modification of a PDU session for the corresponding mapped slice (WAB-MT VPLMN network slice 2) . At 635, PDU Session establishment for the mapped WAB-MT 610’s slice is carried out. At 637, data packet transfer over the created / modified WAB-MT 610’s PDU session over the mapped slice of WAB-MT 610 take place. UE 604 may then receive Slice B data packets over WAB-MT VPLMN network Slice 2 of WAB-MT 610.

[0148] In some examples, when / if a WAB node is configured, it receives a mapping of BH slices to UE level slices and stores this mapping information. When / if in a UE context a slice at UE level is allowed for a UE, the WAB can start registering with the mapped BH slice if this BH slice is not registered yet. Otherwise there a local association may be recorded. The WAB node then receives at some point a PDU session context for a UE and this maps to a slice at UE level. If so, the MWAB establishes a BH session with the mapped BH level s-NSSAI or reuses the PDU session with the mapped BH PDU session by associating this PDU session to the BH PDU session and modifying the BH PDU session if any QoS adjustment was required. According to some examples, when / if a BH PDU session is left with no associated PDU sessions the MWAB can release it. According to some examples, when / if a registered BH S-NSSAI has no UE level associated registered s-NSSAIs, then the UE may deregister this S-NSSAI.

[0149] FIG. 7 shows an example method flow. The method may be performed by a WAB node such as WAB node 306, 406, or WAB-MT 510, 610, for example.

[0150] At 700, the method comprises obtaining, from a network entity of a first network, mapping information between at least one network slice for an apparatus performing the method and one or more network slices of at least one user equipment.

[0151] According to some examples, the number of the at least one network slice for the network node is smaller than or equal to the number of the one or more network slices for the at least one user equipment.

[0152] According to some examples, the number of the at least one network slice for the network node is smaller than or equal to a maximum number of network slices (allowed to be) used by single user equipment of the at least one user equipment. For example, the maximum number may refer to a limit of the number of network slices used / configured / allowed per UE. In an embodiment, the maximum number or the limit of the number of network slices used / configured / allowed per UE is 8.

[0153] At 702, the method comprises connecting with a first user equipment of the at least one user equipment.

[0154] At 704, the method comprises determining that a first network slice is configured for a first data session for the first user equipment.

[0155] At 706, the method comprises in response to the determination that the first network slice is configured for the first data session for the first user equipment, sending a request to the first network to configure a second data session using a second network slice, wherein the second network slice is mapped to the first network slice based on the mapping information.

[0156] At 708 the method comprises receiving first data of the first data session over the second data session.

[0157] At 710 the method comprises sending the first data to the first user equipment over the first data session.
