[0046] Principle of the present disclosure will now be described with reference to some example embodiments. It is to be understood that these embodiments are described only for the purpose of illustration and help those skilled in the art to understand and implement the present disclosure, without suggesting any limitation as to the scope of the disclosure. Embodiments described herein can be implemented in various manners other than the ones described below.

[0047] In the following description and claims, unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skills in the art to which this disclosure belongs.

[0055] As used herein, the term “resource, ” “transmission resource, ” “uplink resource, ” or “downlink resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, or any other resource enabling a communication, and the like. In the following, unless explicitly stated, a resource in both frequency domain and time domain will be used as an example of a transmission resource for describing some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments of the present disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.

[0056] As used herein, the term “topology” may refer to a way in which constituent parts are interrelated or arranged. For example, “topology” may indicate how the terminal device and the network device are arranged and / or communicated. As used herein, the term “IoT radio interface” may refer to an air interface that is used for IoT communication. The term “backscatter” used herein may refer to a method that uses an incident radio-frequency (RF) signal to transmit data without a battery or power source. The term “backscatter signal” used herein may refer to a reflection of ambient radio frequency signal.

[0057] The term “ambient IoT device” (also referred to as IoT device for sometimes) used herein is a 3GPP IoT device which is much smaller and cheaper compared to previous generations of IoT. The ultimate ambient IoT energy source is that from radio waves. Both Ambient IoT and Ambient computing rely upon energy harvesting as one of the key mechanisms for powering and enabling the technology. Energy harvesting, as it applies to Ambient IoT and Ambient Computing, is the harnessing of the power in ambient radio waves to power tiny computers. Ambient IoT device may have a new radio / air interface to a reader / node. The new radio interface may be frame based or non-frame based. Deploying ambient IoT service on existing system could reduce the operation cost and quickly commercialize the new service.

[0058] A-IoT downlink (DL) study includes an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) -based waveform from A-IoT R2D (reader-to-device) perspective, such as, study whether / how to handle cyclic prefix (CP) at transmitter / device / design and / or the type of OFDM waveform is transparent to ambient A-IoT device. A-IoT DL study includes On-Off Keying (OOK) from DL transmitter’s perspective. For R2D, line codes studied are: Manchester encoding and pulse-interval encoding (PIE) . Regarding forward error-correction code (FEC) , R2D with no FEC is studied as baseline.

[0059] R2D study assumes use of Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) . D2R study assumes use of CRC. FFS which CRC generator polynomial (s) are assumed, and if any cases are included with no CRC.

[0060] At least the following bandwidths for R2D are defined for the purpose of the study: Transmission bandwidth Btx, R2D from a Reader perspective: the frequency resources used for transmitting R2D; occupied bandwidth Bocc, R2D from a Reader perspective: the frequency resources used for transmitting R2D, and potential guard band; Bocc, R2D ≥ Btx, R2D.

[0061] Further, at least when a response is expected from multiple devices that are intended to be identified, an A-IoT contention-based access procedure initiated by the reader is used. For A-IoT contention-based access procedure, at least slotted-ALOHA based access is studied.

[0062] At least the following time domain frame structure is studied for A-IoT R2D and D2R transmission.

[0063] ● For R2D transmission,

[0064] ● A R2D timing acquisition signal (e.g. R2D preamble) is included at least for timing acquisition and for indicating the start of the R2D transmission in time domain.

[0065] ● For device-to-reader (D2R) transmission,

[0066] ● A D2R timing acquisition signal (e.g., D2R preamble) is included at least for timing acquisition and for indicating the start of the D2R transmission in time domain.

[0067] For further discussion, the following terminologies are used for A-IoT for studying processing time aspects:

[0068] ● TR2D_min: Minimum Time between a R2D transmission and the corresponding D2R transmission following it.

[0069] ● TD2R_min: Minimum Time between a D2R transmission and the corresponding R2D transmission following it.

[0070] ● TR2D_R2D_min: Minimum Time between two different consecutive R2D transmissions to the same A-IoT device.

[0071] ● TD2R_D2R_min: Minimum Time between two different consecutive D2R transmissions from the same A-IoT device.

[0072] For ambient IoT devices, a dedicated physical broadcast channel for R2D, e.g. physical broadcast channel (PBCH) -like, is not considered. Further, for ambient IoT devices, at least for R2D data transmission, a physical channel (PRDCH) is studied, and system information (if defined) is transmitted on the PRDCH.

[0073] For ambient IoT devices, at least for D2R data transmission, a physical channel (PDRCH) is studied along with the following: response transmitted from device to reader  during contention-based access procedure is transmitted on the PDRCH.

[0074] For A-IoT study item, at least single-tone unmodulated sinusoid waveform is a candidate waveform for carrier wave for D2R backscattering. For A-IoT study item, multi-tone waveforms for carrier wave for D2R backscattering can be studied.

[0075] For the case that D2R backscattering is transmitted in the same carrier as carrier-wave (CW) for D2R backscattering, and for topology 1, the following cases for CW transmission are studied:

[0076] ● Case 1-1: CW is transmitted from inside the topology, transmitted in DL spectrum.

[0077] ● Case 1-2: CW is transmitted from inside the topology, transmitted in UL spectrum.

[0078] ● Case 1-4: CW is transmitted from outside the topology, transmitted in UL spectrum.

[0079] For the case that D2R backscattering is transmitted in the same carrier as CW for D2R backscattering, and for topology 2, the following cases for CW transmission are studied:

[0080] ● Case 2-2: CW is transmitted from inside the topology (i.e., intermediate UE) , transmitted in UL spectrum.

[0081] ● Case 2-3: CW is transmitted from outside the topology, transmitted in DL spectrum.

[0082] ● Case 2-4: CW is transmitted from outside the topology, transmitted in UL spectrum.

[0083] Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0084] Example environment

[0085] FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B illustrate schematic diagrams of example communication environments in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented, respectively. As shown in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B, a plurality of communication devices, including a first device 110 and a first device 120, can communicate with each other. In the example of FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B, the first device 110 may be an ambient IoT device / ambient IoT tag and the second device 120 may be a base station serving a third device 130 which is a UE.

[0086] It is to be understood that the number of devices and their connections shown in  FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The communication environment may include any suitable number of devices configured to implementing example embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more additional devices may be located in the cell, and one or more additional cells may be deployed in the communication environment. It is noted that although illustrated as a network device, the second device 120 may be another device than a network device. Although illustrated as a terminal device, the third device 130 may be other device than a terminal device.

[0087] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the third device 130 operating as a UE and the second device 120 operating as a base station. However, in some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal device may be implemented at a network device or other device, and operations described in connection with a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other device.

[0088] In some example embodiments, if the third device 130 is a terminal device and the second device 120 is a network device, a link from the second device 120 to the third device 130 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the third device 130 to the second device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the second device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the third device 130 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the third device 130 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the second device 120 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0089] The communications in the communication environments shown in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , New Radio (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0090] FIG. 1A shows a first topology 100A where the first device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) directly and bidirectionally communicates with the second device 120. The communication between the second device 120 and the first device 110 may include ambient IoT data and / or signalling. This first topology 100A may include the possibility that the second device 120 transmitting to the first device 110 is a different from the second device 120 receiving from the first device 110. For example, the first topology 100A may be deployed in a scenario where the first device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) and the second device 120 may be indoors.

[0091] FIG. 1B shows a second topology 100B where the first device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) communicates bidirectionally with an intermediate node (i.e., the third device 130) between the first device 110 and the second device 120. In the second topology 100B, the intermediate node may be a relay, IAB node, UE, repeater, and the like. which is capable of Ambient IoT. The intermediate node may transfer Ambient IoT data and / or signalling between the first device 110 and the second device 120. For example, the second topology 100B may be deployed in a scenario where the first device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) and the second device 120 may be outdoor.

[0092] In some embodiments, an air interface design with minimized differences (where necessary) for Ambient IoT may enable the following devices: (1) Device 1 ~1 μW peak power consumption, has energy storage, initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, neither DL nor UL amplification in the device, the device’s UL transmission is backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally; and (2) Device 2a and Device 2b ≤ a few hundred μW peak power consumption1, has energy storage, initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, both DL and / or UL amplification in the device. The UL transmission of Device 2a may be backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally. The UL transmission of Device 2b may be generated internally by the device. It is to be understood that “≤ a few hundred μW” means WGs are not tasked with setting a particular value, and that it will be for WG discussions to determine if a presented design with corresponding power consumption satisfies the “≤ a few hundred μW” requirement.

[0093] In some embodiments, there may be different types of ambient IoT devices, including: a first type of device (i.e., Device A) which has no energy storage and no independent signal generation / amplification, i.e. backscattering transmission, a second type of device (i.e., Device B) which has energy storage but no independent signal generation, i.e. backscattering transmission, and a third type of device (i.e., Device C)  which has energy storage and independent signal generation, i.e., active RF components for transmission. For the second type of device, use of stored energy can include amplification for reflected signals. The first device 110 may be any of the first, second or third types of devices.

[0094] A limited energy storage can be different among implementations within Device B or implementations within Device C, and different between Device B and Device C. Such storage is expected to be order (s) of magnitude smaller than an NB-IoT device would typically include. For Device A, the power consumption target during transmitting / receiving is ≤ 1 μW or ≤ 10 μW. For Device B, the target during transmitting / receiving is such that: Device A power consumption 《 Device B power consumption < Device C power consumption; or Device A power consumption ≤ Device B power consumption < Device C power consumption. The device power consumption during transmitting / receiving for Device C is ≤ 1 mW to ≤ 10 mW. For Device A, the complexity target is to be comparable to UHF RFID ISO18000-6C (EPC C1G2) . For Device B, the target is such that: Device A complexity < Device B complexity < Device C complexity. For Device C, the complexity target is to be orders-of-magnitude lower than NB-IoT.

[0095] FIG. 2A illustrates a schematic diagram of an example of a structure 200A of Device 1. As shown in FIG. 2A, the structure 200A may include an antenna which may be either shared or separate for RF energy harvester and receiver / transmitter. A matching network 210 in the structure 200A may be to match impedance between antenna and other components (including RF energy harvester and receiver related blocks) . The structure 200A may include an RF energy harvester 200A that can include rectifier performing RF signal (AC) to DC conversion. The structure 200A may also include an energy storage (e.g., capacitor) that stores harvested energy from RF energy harvester and a Power management unit (PMU) that manages storing energy to energy storage from energy harvester and suppling power to active component blocks which needs power supply.

[0096] Further, as shown in FIG. 2A, a digital BB logic in the structure 200A may include functional blocks like encoder 290, decoder 270, controller 280, and the like. Memory in the structure 200A can include two types of memory: 1) Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) such as EEPROM for permanently storing device ID, etc, and 2) registers for temporarily keeping any information required for its operation only while energy is available in energy storage. The structure may also include a clock generator 230 which  provides required clock signal (s) .

[0097] The structure 200A can also include reception related blocks. For example, the structure 200A may include an RF band-pass filter (BPF) for improving selectivity. Depending on implementation, the RF BPF may not exist. An RF envelope detector 240 may be included in the structure 200A to converts RF signal to baseband. Moreover, a BB low-pass filter (LPF) in the structure can filter out harmonics and high frequency components to improve input signal quality to a comparator 250 which determines high / low of input signal. In some embodiments, depending on implementation, the BB LPF may not exist. Presence of BB LPF is assumed for the study.

[0098] Moreover, the structure 200A can include transmission related blocks. For example, the structure 200A may include a backscatter modulator 260 that switches impedance to modulate backscattered signal with transmission signal from BB logics.

[0099] FIG. 2B illustrates a schematic diagram of an example of a structure 200B of Device 2a. As shown in FIG. 2B, the structure 200B may include some similar components / elements to the structure 200. Detailed description of the similar components / elements is omitted here. The structure 200B may further include a reflection amplifier 265 that can amplify reflected backscattered signal. At least one of R2D / Constructed Wetlands 2D (CW2D) and D2R may be amplified by either the reflection amplifier 265 or LNA. The structure 200B may also include a BB amplifier that amplifies BB signal to improve signal strength. In some embodiments, a large frequency shifter 255 may be included in the structure 200B for shifting backscattered signal from one frequency to another frequency. In addition, the structure 200B may include an energy harvester 225 which is other than the RF energy harvester 220.

[0100] Reference is now made to FIG. 3A, which illustrates a diagram 300A of PIE symbols. In the example of FIG. 3A, the PIE allows transmission of 1 bit of “0” or “1” at once. The PIE method makes “0” or “1” distinguished from each other by setting a length of an energy transfer section differently. Herein, the symbol “Tari” denotes a reference time interval of a signal transmitted to the IoT device. Further, data-0 is encoded by separating a high power state section, where energy is being transferred, and a low Pulse Width (PW) section, where energy is not being transferred. Further, a time length of PIE data-0 is 1 Tari.

[0101] In addition, PIE data-1 is encoded by allocating an energy transfer section longer  than that of data-0 and is ended with a low PW. Further, a time length of PIE data-0 is 1.5 Tari to 2 Tari.

[0102] Further, when transmitting data from the IoT reader device to the IoT device, the signals may consist of a preamble portion and a data portion. The preamble includes symbols such as a delimiter with a time length of 12.5 μs+ / -5%, a data-0 with a time length of Tari, a RTcal and a TRcal which are used to distinguish data-0 and data-1.

[0103] Reference is now made to FIG. 3B, which illustrates a diagram 300B of Manchester symbols. As illustrated in FIG. 3B, each Manchester symbol comprises a high power state and a low power state. The IoT device may distinguish data-0 and data-1 by detecing a raising edges to a high power level or a falling edge to a low power level.

[0104] Example processes

[0105] In the following discussion, an IoT reader device may be the network device 120 in FIG. 1A, or the network device 120 and / or the terminal device 130 in FIG. 1B. Further, an IoT device may be the IoT device 110 FIG. 1A or FIG. 1B.

[0106] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, an enhanced method for PIE method is proposed, which is discussed with reference to FIG. 4 and FIG. 7.

[0107] FIG. 4 illustrates a diagram 400 of PIE symbols. In FIG. 4, the last number of samples in the OFDM symbol and corresponding CP is always high power level state. In this way, more RF power may be applied to device for energy harvesting.

[0108] In some embodiments, assuming bit 0 duration is X Ts and bit 1 duration is Y Ts and maximum CP length is C = (14 + 144 / 2^u) Ts, where Ts is 1 /  (15000*2048) second. The threshold to determine bit value is D = ( (X + C) + Y)  / 2. If a detected PIE duration is less than D, determine the PIE symbol with data-0, otherwise, determine the PIE symbol with data-1.

[0109] In operation, the IoT reader device transmits, to a IoT device 110, a sequence of cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) symbols, each CP-OFDM symbol comprising a plurality of pulse interval encoding (PIE) symbols, wherein each PEI symbbl is represented by a time duration between two adjacent raising edges to a high power level. In particular, at least one of the following is expected to be ended  with a high power state: a CP-OFDM symbol or an OFDM symbol in the CP-OFDM symbol, and a CP of the CP-OFDM symbol is expected to be with a high power state.

[0110] As for the IoT device 110, the IoT device 110 receives the sequence of cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) symbols. Then, the IoT device 110 detects a time duration between two adjacent raising edges to a high power level.

[0111] In some embodiments, in accordance with a determination that the time duration is longer than or equal to a first threshold, the IoT device 110 determines a PEI symbol with a first value is detected.

[0112] Alternatively, in some embodiments, in accordance with a determination that the time duration is shorter than or equal to the first threshold, the IoT device 110 determines a PEI symbol with a second value is detected.

[0113] In the example of FIG. 4, the PIE symbols 405, 410, 420 are determine to the with data-0, while the PIE symbols 415, 425 are determine to the with data-1.

[0114] In some embodiments, a first threshold used by the IoT device 110 to distinguish a PEI symbol with a first value from a PEI with a second value is determined based on the following:

[0115] ● a duration of the PEI symbol with the first value,

[0116] ● a duration of the PEI symbol with the second value, and

[0117] ● a duration of a maximum cyclic prefix (CP) .

[0118] Reference is now made to FIG. 5, which illustrates a diagram 500 of PIE symbols. In the example of FIG. 5, a PIE symbol whose duration is less than a threshold may be ignored. In the example of FIG. 5, PIE symbol 510 may be ignored.

[0119] In operation, define PIE symbol used for PIE with a high power level state at the beginning and following a low power level state. Further, time duration for the PIE symbol is from the raising edge to the high power level till the next raising edge to the high power level.

[0120] In some embodiments, the information about the threshold (used for ignoring the PIE symbol) may be transmitted in the timing acquisition signal (also called as preamble sometimes) . As one example, the timing acquisition signal may contain duration  of ignored symbol, duration of data-0 symbol and duration of data-1 symbol.

[0121] In some embodiments, if the duration of PIE symbol is less than the threshold of the duration of ignore symbol or duration calculated based on at least ignored symbol, then device ignores the PIE symbol.

[0122] In some embodiments, assuming bit 0 duration is X Ts and bit 1 duration is 2X Ts and maximum CP length is C = (14 + 144 / 2^u) Ts, where X > C. The ignore duration threshold could be (X+C)  / 2, where Ts is LTE and NR basic time unit to determine the time duration of a signal, where Ts is 1 /  (15000*2048) second.

[0123] In some embodiments, X = 2048 / 2^p which implies one OFDM symbol can contain power two number of PIE basic duration in OFDM symbol excluding CP part, which is better to align different length of bit 0 and bit 1 symbol.

[0124] In some embodiments, the duration of low level state in a PIE symbol is less than CP duration of OFDM symbol. In that way, there is high level part in CP which can be used for PIE symbol detection at device.

[0125] Reference is now made to FIG. 6. As illustrated in example A of FIG. 6, when the OFMD is not ended with a low power level state, the detecting may be inaccurate. In the example A of FIG. 6, the PIE symbol 605 with data-0 may be detected to be data-1 inaccurately, while PIE symbol 610 with data-1 may be detected to be two PIE symbols with data-0 inaccurately.

[0126] In view of this, in some embodiments, the last samples in the OFDM symbol and corresponding CP may be expected to be always from high power level state to low power level state. Further, the duration of low level state in a PIE symbol is less than CP duration of OFDM symbol.

[0127] Further, the IoT reader device may adjust the duration of bit 1 PIE symbol to make sure the last part of samples in the OFDM symbol is low power level state as shown in FIG. 6.

[0128] In some embodiments, the IoT reader device may transmit, to a IoT device 110, a sequence of cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) symbols, each CP-OFDM symbol comprising a plurality of pulse interval encoding (PIE) symbols, wherein each PEI symbbl is represented by a time duration between two adjacent raising edges to a high power level. In particular, at least one of the following is expected  to be ended with a low power state: a CP-OFDM symbol or an OFDM symbol in the CP-OFDM symbol, and a CP of the CP-OFDM symbol is expected to be with a low power state.

[0129] As for the IoT device 110, the IoT device 110 may receive the sequence of cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) symbols, each CP-OFDM symbol comprising a plurality of pulse interval encoding (PIE) symbols, and may detect a time duration between two adjacent raising edges to a high power level.

[0130] In some embodiments, in accordance with a determination that the time duration is longer than or equal to a first threshold, the IoT device may determine a PEI symbol with a first value is detected.

[0131] Alternatively, in some embodiments, in accordance with a determination that the time duration is shorter than or equal to the first threshold and longer than or equal to a second threshold, the IoT device may determine a PEI symbol with a second value is detected.

[0132] Alternatively, in some embodiments, in accordance with a determination that the time duration is shorter than or equal to the second threshold, the IoT device may determine the detecting result is invalid.

[0133] In some embodiments, information about a first threshold and a second threshold is transmitted in a timing acquisition signal to the IoT device 110, the first threshold is used by the IoT device 110 to distinguish a PEI symbol with a first value from a PEI with a second value, and the second threshold is used by the IoT device 110 to distinguish the PEI symbol with the second value from an invalid detecting.

[0134] In some embodiments, the first threshold may be determined based on the following: a duration of the PEI symbol with the first value, and a duration of the PEI symbol with the second value.

[0135] In some embodiments, the second threshold may be determined based on the following: the duration of the PEI symbol with the second value, and a duration of a maximum cyclic prefix (CP) .

[0136] In some embodiments, a duration of low level state in a PIE symbol is expected to be shorter than a duration of CP.

[0137] In some embodiments, at least one of the following is expected to be ended with a low power state: a CP-OFDM symbol, or an OFDM symbol in the CP-OFDM symbol and a CP of the CP-OFDM symbol is expected to be with a high power state.

[0138] In some embodiments, in response to the number of consecutive PEI symbols with a second value reaching a pre-defined number, insert an additional a PEI symbol with the first value. In the specific example of FIG. 6, if the there are six ‘0’ , the IoT reader will insert a PIE with data-1.

[0139] As for the IoT device, in response to the number of consecutive PEI symbols with a second value reaching a pre-defined number and a subsequent PEI symbol is detected to be a PEI symbol with the first value, the IoT device may drop the subsequent PEI symbol.

[0140] Reference is now made to FIG. 7 illustrates a diagram 700 of PIE symbols. In the example of FIG. 7, the last number of samples in the OFDM symbol and corresponding CP is always low power level state. Further, the duration of low level state in a PIE symbol is larger than CP duration of OFDM symbol.

[0141] In some embodiments, time duration for the PIE symbol is from the raising edge to the high power level to the falling edge from the high power level.

[0142] In operation, the IoT reader device transmit, to a IoT device 110, a sequence of cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) symbols, each CP-OFDM symbol comprising a plurality of pulse interval encoding (PIE) symbols, wherein each PEI symbbl is represented by a time duration a raising edge to a high power level and a following falling edge to a low power level. In particular, at least one of the following is expected to be ended with a low power state: a CP-OFDM symbol or an OFDM symbol in the CP-OFDM symbol, and a CP of the CP-OFDM symbol is expected to be with a low power state.

[0143] In some embodiments, a duration of low level state in a PIE symbol is expected to be larger than a duration of CP.

[0144] As for the IoT device 110, the IoT device may receive the sequence of cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) symbols, each CP-OFDM symbol comprising a plurality of pulse interval encoding (PIE) symbols. Then, the IoT device 110 may detect a time duration a raising edge to a high power level and a following  falling edge to a low power level.

[0145] In some embodiments, in accordance with a determination that the time duration is longer than or equal to a first threshold, the IoT device 110 may determine a PEI symbol with a first value is detected.

[0146] In some embodiments, in accordance with a determination that the time duration is shorter than or equal to the first threshold, the IoT device 110 may determine a PEI symbol with a second value is detected.

[0147] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, an enhanced method for Manchester method is proposed, which is discussed with reference to FIG. 8A and FIG. 8B. In this way, CP-OFDM compatible waveform on Manchester encoding can be generated by the reader.

[0148] In some embodiments, define Manchester symbol used for Manchester encoding with a high power level state and a low power level state.

[0149] In some embodiments, if high power level state is at the beginning of the Manchester symbol, it is bit 0; otherwise, it is bit 1.

[0150] In some embodiments, if low power level state is at the beginning of the Manchester symbol, it is bit 0; otherwise, it is bit 1.

[0151] In some embodiments, there could be M Manchester symbol in a OFDM symbol for OOK-4. There could be one Manchester symbol in two OFDM symbols for OOK-1, where OOK-1 and OOK-4 is defined in 3GPP TR38.869. The duration of one Manchester symbol is (2048 + 144)  / 2^u / M Ts, that CP part of the OFDM symbol is included for Manchester symbol generation.

[0152] In some embodiments, high power level prefix and suffix is inserted in a Manchester symbol, and the last part of samples in the OFDM symbol and corresponding CP is always high power level state, as illustrated in FIG. 8A.

[0153] In operation, the IoT reader may transmit, to a IoT device 110, a sequence of cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) symbols, each CP-OFDM symbol comprising a plurality of Manchester symbols, wherein each PEI symbbl is represented by a raising edge to a high power level or a falling edge to a low power level at a middle portion of each Manchester symbol, wherein each Manchester symbol is  expected to be ended with a high power state.

[0154] As for the IoT device 110, the IoT deice 110 may receive the sequence of cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) symbols, each CP-OFDM symbol comprising a plurality of Manchester symbols. Then, the IoT device 110 may detect a raising edge to a high power level or a falling edge to a low power level at a middle portion of each Manchester symbol.

[0155] In some embodiment, in response to detecting a raising edge to a high power level, the IoT deice may determine a Manchester symbol with a first value is detected.

[0156] In some embodiment, in response to detecting a falling edge to a low power level, the IoT deice may determine a Manchester symbol with a second value is detected.

[0157] In some embodiments, the CP-OFDM is not applied on subcarriers for Manchester symbols. Symmetry OFDM generation is used for the CP part. Symmetry OFDM can be generated by applying an absolute value on time domain in CP-OFDM generation.

[0158] The time-continuous signal on antenna port p and subcarrier spacing configuration μ for OFDM symbol in a subframe for any physical channel or signal except PRACH is defined by:

[0159] where t=0 at the start of the subframe,

[0160] and

[0161] - Δf is subcarrier spacing of the OFDM in hertz;

[0162] - μ is the subcarrier spacing configuration;

[0163] - μ0 is the largest μ value among the subcarrier spacing configurations by scs-Specific-CarrierList for each of uplink and downlink and by sl-SCS-SpecificCarrierList for side-link.

[0164] In operation, the IoT reader device transmit, to a IoT device 110, a sequence of cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) symbols, each CP-OFDM symbol comprising a plurality of Manchester symbols, wherein a CP of each CP-OFDM symbol is a mirror of a first part of an OFDM symbol of the CP-OFDM .

[0165] As for the IoT device 110, the IoT deice 110 may receive the sequence of cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) symbols, each CP-OFDM symbol comprising a plurality of Manchester symbols, wherein a CP of each CP-OFDM symbol is a mirror of a first part of an OFDM symbol of the CP-OFDM.
