Description

SSB BEAM-SPECIFIC ADDITIONAL RACH OCCASION CONFIGURATION AND ACTIVATION / DEACTIVATION METHOD FOR GNB ENERGY SAVINGSBACKGROUND1. Field of the Invention

[0001] The present disclosure is related to reducing the number of reception signals of Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH) to achieve energy saving. Additionally, the present disclosure is related to a process of additional RACH occasion configuration and activation to reduce signals gNB must periodically monitor, while reducing the downlink signal overhead to save energy.

[0002] 2. Description of Related Art

[0003] Power consumption is a concern across all industries including mobile telecom systems. The transmission and monitoring of numerous signals in a telecom system can consume relatively large amounts of power. For example, Random Access Channel (RACH) is an uplink (UL) transmission used by user equipment (UE) to initiate synchronization with an eNodeB. RACH Occasion (RO) is an area specified in time and frequency that are available for the reception of a RACH preamble.

[0004] Currently, the RACH configuration is contained in both System Information Block (SIB1) and Radio Resource Control (RRC) message to support initial access process of different UEs. However, as the RACH occasion may be Synchronization Signaling Block (SSB) beam special with the information of each additional RACH occasion listed one by one in the configuration message. As a result, the resource overhead is substantial. Considering System Information Block Type1 (SIB1) is broadcast periodically, it introduces significant energy costs to the network.

[0005] It is possible that 3GPP will introduce an additional RACH occasion to adapt the RACH occasion time resource for different Synchronization Signaling Block (SSB) beams. gNB could provide more RACH occasion opportunities for UE preferred SSB beams by configuring additional RACH occasions. For some cells, the UE preferred beam may change overtime because UE is always moving, (e.g. the UE of a site for school will gather in the teaching  building in the daytime and gather in the dormitory in the evening. ) Dynamically additional RACH occasion resource activation / deactivation could allow gNB to stop monitoring some additional RACH occasions when a beam is not preferred. However, there is no dynamic method to activate / deactivate additional RACH occasions.

[0006] Accordingly, there is a need for a mobile telecom network that overcomes, alleviates, and / or mitigates one or more of the aforementioned and other deleterious effects of prior art to reduce the number of reception signals.SUMMARY

[0007] Accordingly, what is needed is a system and method for reducing downlink (DL) overhead by providing an additional RACH occasion configuration process.

[0008] It is further desired to provide an independent process for additional RACH occasion configuration, which allows each SIB1 to convey the configuration of part of RACH occasions to reduce SIB1 overhead and save transmission energy.

[0009] It is still further desired to provide two additional RACH occasion configuration Information Element (IE) format, one is conveyed by SIB1 and the other conveyed by the Radio Resource Control (RRC) message.

[0010] It is also desired to provide a system and method that reduces the number of UL signals that gNB must monitor by introducing activate  / deactivate methods.

[0011] In one configuration, a system and method are provided that proposes three dynamic methods to activate  / deactivate additional RACH occasions. Additionally, in another configuration, two methods are proposed to trigger the activation  / deactivation process.

[0012] A. RACH occasion configuration. SSB beam specific additional RACH Occasion design can be used to reduce the number of signals that gNB monitors. RACH occasion information is always conveyed by both SIB1 and RRC messages. To reduce the SIB1 overhead and the transmission energy of gNB, it is contemplated to allow SIB1 to convey part of the additional RACH occasion configuration but not the information of all additional RACH occasions. Based on this configuration, it is necessary to provide a format of additional RACH occasion configuration IEs and the process of additional RACH occasion configuration.

[0013] Providing an additional RACH occasion configuration requires: 1) providing a new  RACH occasion configuration table, which contain the Preamble format and transmission SFN / slot and RACH occasion duration; and 2) providing a format of SIB1 conveyed additional RACH occasion configuration IE and RRC message conveyed additional RACH occasion configuration IE. To that end, the process of RACH occasion configuration is as follows:

[0014] (1) For SA or NE-DC or NR-DC UE:

[0015] (a) gNB makes the additional RACH occasion design based on a characteristic of each SSB, (e.g., spatial characteristic and potential UE number, the number of RACH occasion and preamble format mapping with one SSB may be different with another) . As an example, for the three SSB system illustrated in FIG. 1, the gNB makes the decision that allocates one additional RACH occasion for SSB1, one additional RACH occasion for SSB2 and no additional RACH occasion for SSB3.

[0016] (b) gNB broadcasts the new radio (NR) additional RACH occasion configuration by SIB1 message periodically. Each SIB1 contains the information of the additional RACH occasions, which associates the same SSB with the SIB associate (e.g., the SIB1 mapping to SSB2 contains the information of the first additional RACH occasion only, and the SIB1 mapping to SSB3 does not contain any additional RACH occasion information) .

[0017] (c) UE detects SSBs and makes the measurement of Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP) of each received SSB.

[0018] (d) UE selects one appreciated SSB based on the measurement result.

[0019] (e) UE detects the SIB1, which uses the same beam as the appreciated SSB.

[0020] (f) UE decodes the SIB1, and then transmits preamble at legacy RACH occasion, or the active additional RACH occasion provided by the SIB1 message.

[0021] (g) gNB constructs an SSB-additional RACH occasion mapping list, which contains information of all additional RACH occasions. Each node of this list contains an SSB index, and the information of additional RACH occasions is associated with that SSB.

[0022] (h) gNB adds the SSB-Additional RACH occasion mapping list to RRC reconfiguration message and sends it to UE after initial access process.

[0023] (2) For EN-DC UE: the additional RACH occasion configuration process is similar with  legacy RACH configuration process.

[0024] (a) same process as (1) (a) above.

[0025] (b) gNB construct an SSB-additional RACH occasion mapping list, which contains information of all additional RACH occasions. Each node of this list contains an SSB index, and the information of additional RACH occasions associated with that SSB. For example, a list with two nodes, the first node is marked with the SSB index 1 and contains the information of the first additional RACH occasion, and the second node is marked with the SSB index 2 and contains the information of the second RACH occasion.

[0026] (c) gNB adds the SSB-additional RACH occasion mapping list to RRC reconfiguration message and delivers to eNB.

[0027] (d) eNB sends NR RRC reconfiguration message to UE.

[0028] (e) UE receives NR RRC reconfiguration message from eNB and decodes RRC reconfiguration message.

[0029] (f) UE detects SSBs and makes the measurement of RSRP of each received SSB.

[0030] (g) UE selects one appreciated SSB based on the measurement result.

[0031] (h) UE selects one legacy RACH occasion or one active additional RACH occasion, which maps with the appreciate SSB, and then transmits the preamble at the active additional RACH occasion or legacy RACH occasions.

[0032] B. RACH occasion activation / deactivation. Considering the UE appreciated SSB beam will change over time, it is proposed to provide three dynamic additional RACH occasion activation / deactivation methods, to save network energy when SSB beam is not preferred.

[0033] (1) For RRC Idel SA / NE-DC / NR-DC UE or RRC: Connect UE that has been configured with searchSpaceSIB1 and pagingSearchSpace: Activate / deactivate by SIB1 information modification process.

[0034] (2) For RRC Connected UE hasn’ t been configured with searchSpaceSIB1 and pagingSearchSpace:

[0035] (a) Activate / deactivate additional RACH occasion by Medium Access Control Control Element (MAC CE) .

[0036] (b) Activate / deactivate additional RACH occasion Downlink Control Information (DCI) .

[0037] C. Additional RACH occasion activation / deactivation. Two methods to trigger additional RACH occasion activation / deactivation process are provided.

[0038] (1) Trigger based on changes of current random-access time statistic; and 2) Trigger based on characters of UE tide model.

[0083] FIG. 6B is a continuation of the table according to FIG. 6A.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0084] A. Beam-special additional RACH occasion configuration process

[0085] New radio (NR) systems, especially the Frequency Range 2 (FR2) system, which includes frequency bands from 24.25 GHz to 71.0 GHz, use multiple narrow SSB beams rather than one wide SSB to acquire higher beamforming gain and less interface. Each SSB beam has at least one RACH occasion. The gNB monitors all RACH occasions for a potential RACH message, and the UE transmits the preamble at the RACH occasions mapping the SSB beam it  uses.

[0086] An additional RACH occasion is provided, which aims at reducing the total RACH occasion signal number without reducing the RACH occasion number of busy beams. For example, FIG. 1 is a three SSB NR wireless communication system. The beams of SSB1 / SSB2 are utilized by many UE but SSB3 is not.

[0087] FIG. 2 on the upper line (a) shows the signals if the gNB configures a legacy RACH occasion only. FIG. 2 on the lower line (b) shows the signals if gNB configures both legacy RACH occasions and SSB beam-special additional RACH occasions.

[0088] As FIG. 2 shows, if only legacy RACH occasion is supported, gNB configures six RACH occasions in one associate period. If the gNB could support both additional RACH occasion and legacy RACH occasion, it could extend the legacy RACH occasion period and configure two additional RACH occasion for SSB1 and SSB2. Moreover, as the beams of SSB1 / SSB2 are closer to gNB than SSB3, it may configure a shorter preamble format and RACH occasion duration to additional RACH occasion of SSB1 / SSB2. Thus, it is a trend to configure SSB specific additional RACH occasions to different SSB.

[0089] Currently, all the legacy RACH occasion information is contained in both SIB1 and RRC reconfiguration messages. However, as the additional RACH occasion may be SSB specific, the configuration should list the characteristic of each additional RACH occasion separately. Considering there will be up to 64 SSB beams and additional RACH occasions than SSB, the overhead of additional RACH occasion configuration will be relatively large. As such, it would be energy-intensive to reuse the legacy RACH configuration process, which lets SIB1 periodically broadcast all additional RACH occasion information.

[0090] One configuration proposes a process for additional RACH occasion configuration. During this process, the RRC reconfiguration message would contain information of all RACH occasions, and each SIB1 contains part of the additional RACH occasions configuration. The additional RACH occasion information contained in one SIB1 are the ones associated with the same SSB with the SIB1 associates. This process should significantly reduce the SIB1 overhead. As the SIB1 is broadcast periodically, this process could significantly reduce transmitting energy requirements.

[0091] The configuration process is as follows:

[0092] 1. For SA or NE-DC or NR-DC UE:

[0093] (a) gNB makes the additional RACH occasion design based on a characteristic of each SSB, (e.g., spatial characteristic and potential UE number, the number of RACH occasion and preamble format mapping with one SSB may be different with another) . As an example, for the three SSB system illustrated in FIG. 1, the gNB makes the decision that allocates one additional RACH occasion for SSB1, one additional RACH occasion for SSB2 and no additional RACH occasion for SSB3.

[0094] (b) gNB broadcasts the new radio (NR) additional RACH occasion configuration by SIB1 message periodically.

[0095] (c) UE detects SSBs and makes the measurement of Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP) of each received SSB.

[0096] (d) UE selects one appreciated SSB based on the measurement result.

[0097] (e) UE detects the SIB1, which uses the same beam as the appreciated SSB.

[0098] (f) UE decodes the SIB1, and then transmits preamble at legacy RACH occasion, or the active additional RACH occasion provided by the SIB1 message.

[0099] (g) gNB constructs an SSB-additional RACH occasion mapping list, which contains information of all additional RACH occasions. Each node of this list contains an SSB index, and the information of additional RACH occasions is associated with that SSB.

[0100] (h) gNB adds the SSB-Additional RACH occasion mapping list to RRC reconfiguration message and sends it to UE after initial access process.

[0101] 2. For EN-DC UE (the process is similar with legacy RACH occasion configuration) :

[0102] (a) same process as (1) (a) above.

[0103] (b) gNB construct an SSB-additional RACH occasion mapping list, which contains information of all additional RACH occasions.

[0104] (c) gNB adds the SSB-additional RACH occasion mapping list to RRC reconfiguration message and delivers to eNB.

[0105] (d) eNB sends NR RRC reconfiguration message to UE.

[0106] (e) UE receives NR RRC reconfiguration message from eNB and decodes RRC reconfiguration message.

[0107] (f) UE detects SSBs and makes the measurement of RSRP of each received SSB.

[0108] (g) UE selects one appreciated SSB based on the measurement result.

[0109] (h) UE selects one legacy RACH occasion or one active additional RACH occasion, which maps with the appreciate SSB, and then transmits the preamble at the active additional RACH occasion or legacy RACH occasions.

[0110] To support gNB to make a beam specific additional RACH occasion design based on its beam map and to provide the SSB-specific additional RACH occasion configuration by the above process, the following points for designing a beam-special additional RACH occasion configuration IE are proposed:

[0111] 1) As the RACH occasion duration and Preamble format may be beam specific, the IE should provide a list of RACH occasion configuration elements. Each node of the list contains the information about RACH occasion duration and Preamble format and RACH occasion period special for one additional RACH occasion.

[0112] 2) As the additional RACH occasion number may be beam specific, the configuration should provide the mapping between RACH occasions and SSBs’ index.

[0113] 3) When the additional RACH occasion configuration is conveyed by SIB1, which is broadcast multiple times with different beams, only the additional RACH occasion mapped with the SIB1 beam is contain in one SIB1 message to reduce the overhead. As the SIB1 beam associates with SSB beam, the relationship between additional RACH occasions and SSB index is indicated by SIB1 beam implicitly.

[0114] 4) When additional RACH occasion configuration is conveyed by RRC message, e.g. the RRC configuration, the configuration IE should provide the configuration of all additional RACH occasions. And the RRC message should provide an explicit mapping list between SSB index and additional RACH occasion index.

[0115] 5) As the RACH occasion duration is related with the preamble format, a configuration table about RACH occasion duration and preamble format would be pre-defined. The index of this configuration table but not the preamble format / RACH occasion period / RACH occasion duration is included in the configuration message to reduce the overhead.

[0116] 6) As the beam-map is site / company specific, the starting symbol of each additional RACH occasion would not be pre-defined in the configuration table. It would list in the configurate node of each additional RACH occasion to support flexible time-domain resource configuration.

[0117] As the additional RACH occasion may activate / deactivate dynamically, the gNB provides not only the information of all potential additional RACH occasions but also which RACH occasion is activated currently (e.g., a bitmap of RACH occasion activation / deactivation status) .

[0118] Based on these points: a new configuration table is proposed for beam-special RACH occasion configurations, which contains the preamble format, RACH occasion period information and RACH occasion duration, but the start symbol of the slot is not included in it. An example of an additional RACH occasion configuration table is given in FIG. 3, which shows random access configurations for FR2 and unpaired spectrum.

[0119] An example of additional RACH occasion configuration conveyed by SIB1 may be as follows:

[0120] Where the additionalRachOccasionActivationBitmapSIB1 provides the activation information of the additional RACH occasion given by

[0121] additionalRachOccasionResourceOfSSBList. Value 0 in the bitmap indicates that the corresponding RACH occasion is deactivated while value 1 indicates that the corresponding RACH occasion is activated. additionalRachOccasionConfigurationIndex is the index of the pre-defined RACH occasion configuration table.

[0122] The N is the max index of the pre-defined RACH occasion configuration table. maxNrofAdditionalRachOccasionPerSSB is the max additional RACH occasion number that  could be configured to one SSB. These two parameters would be pre-defined by 3GPP.

[0123] An example of an additional RACH occasion configuration conveyed by RRC is as follows:

[0124] Where the additionalRachOccasionActivationBitmap provides the activation information of the additional ROs mapping to the SSB given by SSBindex. Value 0 in the bitmap indicates that the corresponding RO is deactivated while value 1 indicates that the corresponding RACH occasion is activated. additionalRachOccasionConfigurationIndex is the index of the pre-defined RACH occasion configuration table.

[0125] The N is the max index of the pre-defined RACH occasion configuration table. maxNrofAdditionalRachOccasionPerSSB is the max additional RACH occasion number could be configured to one SSB. These two parameters would be pre-defined by 3GPP.

[0126] B. Dynamic additional RACH occasion activation / deactivation

[0127] The UE preferred SSB of a cell may change overtime. For example, the UE of a site for school will gather in the teaching building (s) in the daytime and gather in the dormitory in the evening, which is also referred to as UE tide. The gNB would configure additional RACH occasions to all potential preferred SSBs.

[0128] If gNB could deactivate additional RACH occasion resources to stop monitoring some additional RACH occasions when the SSB is not preferred, significant energy saving gains could be achieved. As such, the following additional RACH occasion activation / deactivation process and methods are provided:

[0129] Method 1: By SIB1 modification

[0130] For RRC Idel SA / NE-DC / NR-DC UE and RRC connected UE that has been configured with searchSpaceSIB1 and pagingSearchSpace, the activation / deactivation method is by SIB1 modification, and the activation process is same as legacy system information change process.

[0131] As shown previously the additional RACH occasion configuration IE of SIB1 had contained the status bitmap of the additional RACH occasions it configured, but the status of other additional RACH occasions did not. To support activation / deactivation any additional RACH occasion by SIB1, an additional RACH occasion status IE is proposed that contains the following mandatory elements:

[0132] The SSB index of other SSBs are associated with at least one additional RACH occasion. Where the other SSB means whose index is different with the SSB this SIB1 is associated with.

[0133] The status bitmap of the additional RACH occasion associated with each other SSB.

[0134] A example of other additional RACH occasion status IE is as follow.

[0135] Where the SSBindex contained in OtheradditionalRachOccasionStatusOfSSB is the SSB index that is different than the SSB associated with this SIB1.

[0136] When gNB decided to activate / deactivate additional RACH occasions, it makes the following modification of SIBs:

[0137] If at least one additional RACH occasion associated with the SSB that same with the SIB1’s , change the status bitmap additionalRachOccasionActivationBitmapSIB1 included in additionalRachOccasionConfigSIB1.

[0138] If at least one additional RACH occasion associated with the SSB different with the SIB1’s , change the status bitmap additionalRachOccasionActivationBitmap included  OtheradditionalRachOccasionStatusOfSSB, where the SSB index is the same with SSBindex given in the OtheradditionalRachOccasionStatusOfSSB.

[0139] gNB trigger system information changes indication as legacy system information changes process.

[0140] UE detect SIB1 and updates the status of an additional RACH occasion.

[0141] Currently, the gNB transmits the system information changing to RRC connected UE that is not configurated with searchSpaceSIB1 and pagingSearchSpace by RRC message. As shown previously, the RRC message contains the status bitmap of all RACH occasions. gNB could activate / deactivate additional RACH occasions by RRC reconfiguration.

[0142] Moreover, considering the latest RACH status needs to inform UE as soon as possible, two methods are provided for dynamic RACH occasion activation or deactivation, which are constructed by the MAC layer and could be scheduled more quickly than by RRC message.

[0143] Method 2: By MAC CE

[0144] Based on the configuration IE given previously, a new design is proposed for additional RACH occasion activation / deactivation by MAC CE. It is identified by a MAC sub header with LCID or eLCID as specified in FIG. 5 and FIGS. 6A-6B. The format of additional RACH occasion activation / deactivation MAC CE is shown in FIG. 4. It has a variable size comprising that following fields:

[0145] – Serving Cell ID: This field indicates the identity of the Serving Cell for which the MAC CE applies. The length of the field is 5 bits.

[0146] – SSB ID: This field indicates the identity of the SSB ID for which the RACH occasions map with. The length of the field is 6 bits.

[0147] – Ti: This field indicates the status of the RACH occasion with index i of the additionalRachOccasionResourceOfSSBList, which is contained in additionalRachOccasionConfigSIB1 of SIB1 or additionalRachOccasionResourceOfSSB of RRC message. The SIB1 mentioned here is the SIB1 using the same beam that the SSB is using, whose SSB index is SSB ID given in MAC CE. The additionalRachOccasionResourceOfSSB contained in the RRC message is the one mapping to the SSB whose index is SSB ID given in  this MAC CE. Ti field set to 1 indicates the ith additional RACH occasion is activated. Ti field set to 0 indicates the ith additional RACH occasion is deactivated.

[0148] Method 2: By DCI

[0149] Based on the configuration IE given previously, RACH occasion activation  / deactivation indicator is added to DCI format 0_1 and 0_0, as follows:

[0150] –AdditionalROActivateSSBindex: log2 (NAdditionROBeam) bits, where NAdditionROBeam is the number of configured SSB number in additionalRachOccasionConfig or additionalRachOccasionConfigSIB1 that associate with at least one additional RACH occasion. AdditionalROActivateSSBindex is the SSB index of the SSB that the additional RACH occasion is mapped to.

[0151] –AdditonalROActivateindicator: 0 bit if NAdditionROBeam is 0; else is maxNrofAdditionalRachOccasionPerSSB bits. AdditonalROActivateindicator is the bitmap of additional RACH occasion to be activate / deactivate. The first / leftmost bit corresponds to the first RACH occasion in additionalRachOccasionResourceOfSSBList, which is contained in additionalRachOccasionConfigSIB1 of SIB1 or additionalRachOccasionResourceOfSSB of the RRC message. The SIB1 mentioned here is the SIB1 using the same beam that the is SSB using, whose SSB index is AdditionalROActivateSSBindex given in this DCI. The additionalRachOccasionResourceOfSSB contained in the RRC message is the one mapping to the SSB whose index is AdditionalROActivateSSBindex given in this DCI. The bit set to 1 indicates the ith additional RACH occasion is activated. bit set to 0 indicates the ith model is deactivated.

[0152] C. Trigger the activation / deactivation process

[0153] Dynamic activate / deactivate could be triggered by the current random access time statistic of each SSB or characters of UE tide model.

[0154] 1) Based on current random access time statistic:

[0155] gNB makes the statistic of the received RACH number of RACH occasions associated with each SSB within a statistic window. If the received RACH number is higher than the activation threshold, gNB triggers a MAC CE or DCI to activate one or more additional RACH occasions, until all additional RACH occasions associated with this SSB have been  activated.

[0156] If the received RACH number is lower than the deactivation threshold, gNB triggers a MAC CE or DCI to deactivate one additional RACH occasion, until all additional RACH occasions associated with this SSB have been deactivated.

[0157] 2) Based on characters of UE tide model:

[0158] gNB should train a model relating to UE tide based on the experience data of this cell, which could reflect the relationship between SSB index and the busy level and some other characteristics, (e.g. the time frame) . An example of the UE tide model is provided below:

[0159] The gNB could trigger a MAC CE or DCI to activate one or more additional RACH occasion if it is time to increase the busy level, until all additional RACH occasions associated with the SSB had activated. The number of additional RACH occasions to be activated should depended on the busy level.

[0160] The gNB could trigger a MAC CE or DCI to deactivate one or more additional RACH occasions if it is time to be decrease the busy level, until all additional RACH occasions associated with this SSB have been deactivated. The number of additional RACH occasions to  be deactivated should depend on the busy level.

[0161] While the present disclosure has been described with reference to one or more exemplary embodiments, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes may be made and equivalents may be substituted for elements thereof without departing from the scope of the present disclosure. In addition, many modifications may be made to adapt a particular situation or material to the teachings of the disclosure without departing from the scope thereof. Therefore, it is intended that the present disclosure not be limited to the particular embodiment (s) disclosed as the best mode contemplated, but that the disclosure will include all embodiments falling within the scope of the appended claims.
