Roaming is a wireless telecommunication term typically used with mobile devices (like mobile phones). It refers to the mobile phone being used outside the range of its home network and connects to another available cell network.

Automatic and seamless vertical roaming between wireless local area network (WLAN) and wireless wide area network (WWAN) while maintaining an active voice or streaming data connection: systems, methods and program products

A Mobile Station (MS) is able to vertically roam in either direction between two different network, i.e. WWAN and WLAN. The MS is equipped with a dual mode Radio for WWAN and WLAN transmissions. The WLAN Radio is linked to a WLAN Enterprise Gateway Controller (EGC) via a first air link and the WWAN Radio is linked to a WWAN Base Transceiver Station (BTS) via a second air link. The EGC is connected to a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) which is in turn connected to the BTS. An outgoing VoIP call from the WLAN Radio to a remote party on the WWAN will transition or seamlessly switch over to a WWAN connection when the MS detects packet error rates, frequent scale back or consistent signal degradation. Upon such conditions, the WLAN Radio requests the EGC to request an Explicit Call Transfer via the MSC to the MS integrated WWAN Radio portion which automatically accepts the call based on referenced information stored in the user's subscriber identification module (SIM). Once the WWAN Radio is confirmed connected to the remote party on the WWAN, the WLAN Radio drops the WLAN connection. An incoming call between the MS and a remote user via the WWAN will transition to the WLAN Radio when the MS enters WLAN coverage. The MS issues an ECT to the WLAN. After user verification by the WLAN Radio and the EGC signals acceptance of the call, the WWAN Radio connection is dropped and the call is now established between the WLAN Radio and the remote party on the WWAN.

System and method for securing mesh access points in a wireless mesh network, including rapid roaming

An authentication method in a mesh AP including using standard IEEE 802.11i mechanisms between the mesh AP and an authenticator for authenticating the mesh AP to become a child mesh AP with a secure layer-2 link to a first parent mesh AP that has a secure tunnel to a Controller, including, after a layer-2 link between the child mesh AP and the first parent mesh AP is secured, undergoing a join exchange for form a secure tunnel between the child mesh AP and the Controller. Further, a fast roaming method for re-establishing a secure layer-2 link with a new parent mesh AP including, while the mesh AP is a child mesh AP to the first parent mesh AP and has a secure layer-2 link to the first parent mesh AP, caching key information and wireless mesh network identity information, and using the cached information to establish a secure layer-2 link with a new parent mesh AP without having to undergo a 4-way authentication. Further, while the mesh AP is a child mesh AP to the first parent mesh AP, has a secure layer-2 link to the first parent mesh AP, and has a secure tunnel to the Controller, caching session information on the secure tunnel, and using the cached information to re-establish the secure tunnel with the Controller, the secure tunnel now via the new mesh AP.

Method and apparatus for providing access to maps on a personal digital assistant (PDA)

One or more embodiments of the invention provide for an interactive geographic information system on a personal digital assistant (PDA). The system enables the viewing and interaction with geographic information on a PDA. Such information is available while the PDA is connected to a network (i.e., online) and while disconnected (i.e., offline). Embodiments provide the PDA with the functionality commonly available in a standard client comprised of a complete computer system. For example, embodiments provide raster maps for multiple zoom levels, with each zoom level comprising multiple tiles allowing for "virtual roaming" across a map. One or more embodiments also provide raster zooms (by scaling existing raster tiles), selectable vector geometry (for interacting and highlighting with user objects), geo-referencing information for map navigation, meta-data in the form of layer definitions (visibility, display attributes, etc.), links to object attributes in databases, links to object reports generated by corporate web servers, uploadable, sharable redlining data (created from scribbles on the field), offline access on a PDA, and a compact PDA database. Thus, one or more embodiments of the invention provide interactive maps and business objects that can be viewed and queried on a PDA, both in an online and offline mode.

Streaming media application method in panoramic virtual reality roaming

The invention relates to a streaming media application method in panoramic virtual reality roaming. Panoramic streaming media integrated with additional information is applied to panoramic virtual roaming and the panoramic virtual roaming with continuous viewpoints is realized. The streaming media application method in panoramic virtual reality roaming comprises the following steps of: 1) compressing and encoding image data by utilizing a streaming media video compressing and encoding manner and integrating the additional information; 2) determining an initial user roaming location, returningcorresponding streaming media file information to a client through inquiring a database, analyzing streaming media files, and establishing a data structure used for buffer management; and 3) displaying panoramic images and the additional information, and displaying additional information corresponding to each frame of panoramic image in panoramic virtual roaming in a manner of continuous viewpoints. According to the streaming media application method in panoramic virtual reality roaming, the panoramic images and the additional information are compressed into a streaming media format, thus thedefects of the traditional network-based panoramic virtual roaming are overcome, the user waiting time is shortened, and a novel technical line is provided for the network data transmission in panoramic virtual reality roaming.
