Computer apparatus and method for generating documentation using a computed value for a claims cost affected by at least one concurrent, different insurance policy for the same insured

A method for using a digital electrical apparatus to electrically process signals in generating output for insurance documentation for a first insurance policy for a first risk having a claims cost reflecting: a concurrent second insurance policy for a second risk, the second risk being different from the first, the policies being for the same insured person, and the second policy affecting a claims cost of the first policy; the method including the steps of: in a digital electrical computer apparatus comprising a digital computer having a processor, the processor electrically connected to a memory device for storing and retrieving operations including machine-readable signals in the memory device, to an input device for receiving input data and converting the input data into input electrical data, to a visual display unit for converting output electrical data into output having a visual presentation, to a printer for converting the output electrical data into printed documentation, wherein the processor is programmed to control the apparatus to receive the input data and to produce the output data by steps including: inputting actuarial assumptions defining the first insurance policy; and computing a value of a specific financial attribute of the first insurance policy; the method further including the step of inserting the value of the financial attribute in the first insurance policy and other printed documentation related to the first insurance policy.

Method and system for modifying the visual presentation and response to user action of a broadcast application's user interface

A method and system for modifying the look and feel of a user interface of a broadcast application program without altering the broadcast application program. In one embodiment, user interfaces are represented as a hierarchical scene including a background and several components. Within an electronic network, broadcast applications can become resident, e.g., land, on a vendor's device within the network where the device has the ability to display a user interface. The present invention provides a set of mattes that can be used to modify the visual presentation of the user interface of a broadcast application without altering the broadcast application. In this way, the vendor of the device can have some level of control regarding the way in which user interfaces are displayed on the device. Each matte controls the way in which an associated component of the user interface is displayed and how the component is combined with other components. In one embodiment, mattes can force components to become semi-transparent thereby creating certain fading effects, special effects with respect to windows in focus, special effects on windows becoming iconified, wiping effects, etc., with respect to the components of the user interface. The present invention can be implemented as a set of application programming interfaces (APIs) which can be used by an application manager of the vendor's device, e.g., a digital television receiver. The APIs would be available to broadcast applications and could be used for visual effects involving elements of an application's user interface.

Method and apparatus for controlling the visual presentation of data

According to one aspect of the invention, disclosed herein is a method of controlling a visual presentation of data to a viewer, the presentation comprising a plurality of display configuration states through which data content is presented to a viewer, the presentation being responsive to transition input to transition from a current display configuration state to a next display configuration state, the method comprising: (1) providing a plurality of transition effects; (2) for each pair of potentially successive display configuration states, associating a transition effect therewith; (3) receiving transition input indicative to transition from a current display configuration state to a next display configuration state, the transition defining a pair of successive display configuration states; and (4) during the transition from the current display configuration state to the next display configuration state, presenting to the viewer the transition effect associated with the defined pair of successive display configuration states. According to another aspect of the invention, disclosed herein is a method of controlling a visual presentation of data to a viewer, the presentation comprising a plurality of display configuration states through which data content is presented to the viewer, the method comprising: (1) providing a plurality of style guides, each style guide having a plurality of display configuration states corresponding thereto; (2) for each style guide, associating each of its corresponding display configuration states with a plurality of counterpart display configuration states in the other style guides; (3) for a presentation having a previously-defined style guide, selecting a different style guide therefor; and (4) replacing the presentation's display configuration states with their counterparts in the different style guide.

Detachable I/O device with built-in RF/IR functionality to facilitate remote audio-visual presentation

A trackpad or other input / output device is detachable from a computer and adapted with a remote communication functionality using radio frequency (RF) or infrared (IR) technologies, thereby facilitating the performance of slide presentations and other graphic displays. A remote presentation capability allows a computer user to conveniently address a group from a position at a suitable location, such as a podium, that is removed from the computer system. A remote interface includes a trackpad or other input / output device and activation buttons. The input / output device is housed in a small removable enclosure which is adapted for docking into an aperture in the computer. The input / output device is rechargeable with a charger installed into the computer so that the input / output device is recharged during docking with the computer. A portable computer includes a removable input / output (I / O) device that functions as a conventional computer interface when docked to the portable computer and functions as a remote control for controlling operations of the portable computer when the I / O device is removed from the portable computer. The removable I / O device includes one or more activation buttons for usage in controlling operations such as the display operations of an audio-visual presentation. When the I / O device is removed from the portable computer, the I / O device communicates with the portable computer using a remote communication technique such as radio frequency (RF) or infrared (IR) remote communication techniques. The removable I / O device include rechargeable batteries that power the I / O device while the device is used remotely. The rechargeable batteries are charged by the portable computer when the I / O device is returned to the portable computer and docked to the portable computer.

A computer implemented, interactive method and system for assisting real estate agents and their clients in managing and closing a real estate transaction. The invention includes the computer system's generation of a Gantt Chart which automatically tracks the entire real estate transaction, simultaneously providing each agent with the same visual presentation, on their own computer display device, of a description and status of each task to be performed by both agents in order to close the purchase and sale of a property. The Gantt Chart displays each task in a column on each agent's display device and adjacent to each task is a horizontal schedule bar which may contain at least one status indicator which indicates the status of its associated task. A document access indicator is also displayed as an icon adjacent to each task which involves the preparation and delivery of a real estate document. The agent selects the icon in order to display a desired document on the display device, and when the document is completed and delivered the Gantt Chart is automatically updated to indicate that the status of the task has changed. The Gantt Chart also provides each agent with access to a list of vendors to perform a task involving the utilization of a vendor service. As the agent and the selected vendor interact, the Gantt Chart is automatically updated to indicate the current status of obtaining the desired vendor service. When all tasks have been completed, the computer system achieves the complete history of the transaction and generates a pre-closing report. The system also provides each agent with the ability to simultaneously monitor and perform tasks for multiple transactions.
