[0002] One objective of the work item for the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) Release 19 (Rel-19) is to specify procedures and signaling method (s) to support on-demand SSB SCell operation for UEs in connected mode configured with carrier aggregation (CA) for both intra- / inter-band CA, and another objective of the work item is to specify adaptation of common signal / channel transmissions. It has been specified for SSB adaptation in different aspects, including the adaptation of SSB in time domain, e.g., adapting periodicity. Based on the current understanding from the work item description, the objective of the SSB adaptation in time domain can be jointly considered together with the objective of on-demand SSB Scell operation.

[0003] For SSB adaptation in time domain, 3GPP has agreed to consider the following adaptation mechanisms for further study: adaptation of SSB burst periodicity and adaptation based on two SSB configurations where up to two configurations can be active.

[0004] For SSB burst (s) triggered by on-demand SSB SCell operation, 3GPP has the further agreement reached with a list of options on how the on-demand SSB on Scell operation shall be performed, and some of which are listed below:

[0005] ● Option 1: UE expects that on-demand SSB burst (s) is periodically transmitted from time instance A.

[0006] ● Option 1A: UE expects that on-demand SSB burst (s) is periodically transmitted from time instance A until gNB turns OFF the on demand SSB.

[0007] ● Option 2: UE expects that on-demand SSB burst (s) is transmitted from time instance A to time instance B and not transmitted after time instance B.

[0008] There are potential adaptation mechanisms for the adaptation of SSB in time domain, especially considering of on-demand SSB SCell operation on how to adapt the SSB periodicity to help the SCell activation.SUMMARY

[0122] Some example embodiments will now be described in more detail hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which some, but not all embodiments are shown. Indeed, the example embodiments may take many different forms and should not be construed as fixed to the embodiments set forth herein; rather, these embodiments are provided so that this disclosure will satisfy applicable legal requirements. Like reference numerals refer to like elements throughout.

[0123] References in the present disclosure to “one embodiment” , “an embodiment” , “an example embodiment” , and the like indicate that the embodiment described may include a particular feature, structure, or characteristic, but it is not necessary that every embodiment includes the particular feature, structure, or characteristic. Moreover, such phrases are not necessarily referring to the same embodiment. Further, when a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is described in connection with an example embodiment, it is submitted that it is within the knowledge of one skilled in the art to affect such feature, structure, or characteristic in connection with other embodiments whether or not explicitly described.

[0124] In the following description and claims, unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skills in the art to which this disclosure belongs.

[0125] As used herein, the terms “data, ” “content, ” “information, ” and similar terms may be used interchangeably to refer to data capable of being transmitted, received and / or stored in accordance with embodiments of the present invention. Thus, use of any such terms should not be taken to limit the spirit and scope of embodiments of the present invention.

[0126] As used in this application, the term “circuitry” may refer to one or more or all of the following:

[0127] (a) hardware-only circuit implementations (such as implementations in only analog and / or digital circuitry) and

[0128] (b) combinations of hardware circuits and software, such as (as applicable) :

[0129] (i) a combination of analog and / or digital hardware circuit (s) with software / firmware and

[0130] (ii) any portions of hardware processor (s) with software (including digital signal processor (s) ) , software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a mobile phone or server, to perform various functions) and

[0131] (c) hardware circuit (s) and or processor (s) , such as a microprocessor (s) or a portion of a microprocessor (s) , that requires software (e.g., firmware) for operation, but the software may not be present when it is not needed for operation.

[0132] This definition of “circuitry” applies to all uses of this term in this application, including in any claims. As a further example, as used in this application, the term “circuitry” also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (or multiple processors) or portion of a hardware circuit or processor and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware. The term “circuitry” also covers, for example and if applicable to the particular claim element, a baseband integrated circuit or processor integrated circuit for a mobile device or a similar integrated circuit in server, a cellular network device, or other computing or network device.

[0133] As defined herein, a “computer-readable storage medium, ” which refers to a non-transitory physical storage medium (e.g., volatile or non-volatile memory device) , can be differentiated from a “computer-readable transmission medium, ” which refers to an electromagnetic signal. Such a medium may take many forms, including, but not limited to a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium (e.g., non-volatile media, volatile media) , and transmission media. Transmission media include, for example, coaxial cables, copper wire, fiber optic cables, and carrier waves that travel through space without wires or cables, such as acoustic waves and electromagnetic waves, including radio, optical  and infrared waves. Signals include man-made transient variations in amplitude, frequency, phase, polarization or other physical properties transmitted through the transmission media. Examples of non-transitory computer-readable media include a magnetic computer readable medium (e.g., a floppy disk, hard disk, magnetic tape, any other magnetic medium) , an optical computer readable medium (e.g., a compact disc read only memory (CD-ROM) , a digital versatile disc (DVD) , a Blu-Ray disc, or the like) , a random access memory (RAM) , a programmable read only memory (PROM) , an erasable programmable read only memory (EPROM) , a FLASH-EPROM, or any other non-transitory medium from which a computer can read. The term computer-readable storage medium is used herein to refer to any computer-readable medium except transmission media. However, it will be appreciated that where embodiments are described to use a computer-readable storage medium, other types of computer-readable mediums may be substituted for or used in addition to the computer-readable storage medium in alternative embodiments.

[0134] In the following, certain embodiments are explained with reference to cellular communication terminals (or user equipment (UE) or terminal device) capable of cellular communication on a radio access, via cells, base stations, WiFi access point or similar wireless transmitter and / or receiver nodes, providing access points for a radio access system. The radio access system can be arranged to allow mobile communication network connections established between a UE and a core network or a network entity of the core network. The radio access system may be a 3GPP access system, or a non-3GPP access system.

[0135] The cellular communication terminal or UE or terminal device may comprise any suitable device capable of at least receiving cellular communication of data. For example, the cellular communication terminal or UE can be handheld data processing device equipped with radio receiver, data processing and user interface apparatus. Non-limiting examples include a mobile station (MS) such as a mobile phone or what is known as a “smart phone” , a portable computer such as a laptop or a tablet computer provided with a wireless interface card or other wireless interface facility, personal data assistant (PDA) provided with wireless communication capabilities, or any combinations of these or the like. Further examples include wearable wireless devices such as those integrated with watches or smart watches, eyewear, helmets, hats, clothing, ear pieces with cellular connectivity, jewelry and so on, universal serial bus (USB) sticks with cellular capabilities, modem data cards, machine type devices or any combinations of these or the like.

[0136] As described above, 3GPP has been currently researching the adaptation of SSB burst periodicity. In release 18, UE may be allowed to apply the SSB periodicity instead of SS / PBCH block measurement timing configuration, SMTC, when activating the SCell to reduce the SCell activation delay. A new UE capability is defined in TS 38.306 as cited below.

[0137] If UE indicates the capability, the SCell activation delay may be based on the SSB periodicity which is reflected e.g. in the definition of TSMTC_MAX as cited below. Hence the SSB periodicity will impact the SCell activation delay. As the SMTC periodicity is either same periodicity as the SSB or a number of SSB periodicities , the SCell activation delay can be reduced by applying the SSB periodicity instead of SMTC periodicity.

[0138] When SSB adaptation is allowed for network energy saving, a UE may be configured with up to two SSB periodicities on a cell or is configured with single SSB periodicity and skipping / transmitting some SSB bursts non-uniformly. If the network determines to activate the SCell while the longer SSB periodicity is applying, it will take longer time for the UE measurement based on long SSB periodicity, which may impact the latency to activate the SCell for the UE. Thus, some solution is needed to help UE with the fast SCell activation by means of the SSB adaptation.

[0139] The example embodiments of the present disclosure propose an improved solution for SCell activation triggered SSB adaptation. In particular, on the network side, the present disclosure proposes a simpler method to enable the SCell activation to trigger the SSB periodicity adaptation. That is, the network may for example trigger the SSB transmission with a denser / shorter periodicity based on a pre-configured long / short SSB periodicity. Accordingly, on the UE side, the present disclosure proposes a new monitoring / measurement framework that allows UE to apply usage of SSB transmission with a denser / shorter periodicity for example. Although the example embodiments of the present disclosure are described in the context of SCell activation, they may also be applied to PSCell activation hence cell activation herein can be used to cover both scenarios.

[0140] Hereinafter, the example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail with reference to FIGs. 1-8.

[0141] FIG. 1 is a flow chart depicting a method performed by a terminal device according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process of the method may involve a network node such as a base station (e.g. a gNB) or a cell and a terminal device such as a UE. The steps of the method may be performed by a terminal device. The network node may be operable to provide a first cell as a Spcell, which may refer to a primary cell (PCell) or a primary secondary cell (PSCell) , and at least one second cell as a SCell or a PSCell. The terminal device may be capable of supporting shortMeasInterval UE capability for SCell activation. The terminal device may be configured with at least a first SSB periodicity. The terminal device is being served by the first cell, e.g., a PCell or a PSCell.

[0142] In the description hereafter, discussions are made taking an example of a SCell to-be-activated and corresponding usage of a SCell activation command.

[0143] As shown in FIG. 1, at block 102, the terminal device receives from the network node a first message for activating a second cell.

[0144] In some embodiments, the first message may be a SCell activation command. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the first message may be a RRC message. For example, in an embodiment, the first message may be a RRC Reconfiguration message, e.g. for direct SCell activation with one SCell for which the parameter sCellState is set to activated.

[0145] Then at block 104, based on receiving the first message, the terminal device starts to monitor a SSB transmission with the shorter one of the first SSB periodicity and a second SSB periodicity in the second cell.

[0146] In some embodiments, the terminal device may compare first SSB periodicity with the second SSB periodicity and determine the shorter one, and then use it to monitor and measure the subsequent SSB transmission.

[0147] In some embodiments, the first SSB periodicity may be longer than the second SSB periodicity. For example, in an embodiment, the first SSB periodicity may be an integer multiple of the second SSB periodicity.

[0148] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the first SSB periodicity may be shorter than the second SSB periodicity. For example, in an embodiment, the second SSB periodicity may be an integer multiple of the first SSB periodicity.

[0149] In the description hereafter, discussions are made taking an example of the first SSB periodicity being longer than the second SSB periodicity. Therefore, in some embodiments, the first SSB periodicity can be referred to as a long SSB periodicity or a sparse SSB periodicity, or a longer SSB periodicity or a sparser SSB periodicity. These terms of “first SSB periodicity” , “long SSB periodicity” , “sparse SSB periodicity” , “longer SSB periodicity” , and “sparser SSB periodicity” can be used interchangeably in the following description. Similarly, in some embodiments, the second SSB periodicity can be referred to as a short SSB periodicity or a dense SSB periodicity, or a shorter SSB periodicity or a denser SSB periodicity. These terms of “second SSB periodicity” , “short SSB periodicity” , “dense SSB periodicity” , “shorter SSB periodicity” , and “denser SSB periodicity” can be also used interchangeably in the following description.

[0150] In some embodiments, the terminal device may determine the second SSB periodicity based on a single SSB configuration indicating the first (long) SSB periodicity and the second (short) SSB periodicity. In an embodiment, the SSB configuration can be implemented as a single SSB configuration with a value of additional “short” SSB periodicity. This can be done by adding an additional SSB periodicity to the legacy (long) SSB configuration. Alternatively, in an embodiment, the SSB configuration can be implemented as a single SSB configuration for determining “short” SSB periodicity with a scaling factor k, wherein k is a fractional scaling factor configured by the network. The terminal device can then derive the length of short SSB periodicity by applying k*long SSB periodicity.

[0151] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the terminal device may determine the second SSB periodicity based on a separate SSB configuration indicating the second (short) SSB periodicity. For example, in an embodiment, the SSB configuration can be implemented as an additional SSB configuration for short SSB periodicity, e.g., by a value of short SSB periodicity or with a scaling factor k to determine the short SSB periodicity based on the first (long) SSB configuration. This additional SSB configuration may need to ensure the legacy (long) SSBs are overlapping with some of the short SSBs. As an example, in addition to a first SSB configuration indicating the first (long) SSB periodicity, there may be a separate second SSB configuration indicating the second (short) SSB periodicity.

[0152] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the terminal device may determine the second SSB periodicity based on a predefined value or scaling factor for determining the second SSB periodicity. For example, in an embodiment, the second SSB configuration can be implemented as a default SSB periodicity or a scaling factor for determining the short SSB periodicity. For example, in an embodiment, the terminal device (and the network node both) can apply the minimum SSB periodicity  e.g. 5ms. Or, in an embodiment, the terminal device (and the network node) can assume k=0.5 to determine the short SSB periodicity.

[0153] Now referring to FIG. 5, which shows an exemplary process for SCell activation triggered SSB adaptation according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. In some embodiments, after receiving a SCell activation command from the network node, the terminal device may start to monitor the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity after receiving the first SSB with the first (long) SSB periodicity since the SCell activation command was received.

[0154] Referring also to FIG. 6, which also illustrates an exemplary process for SCell activation triggered SSB adaptation according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. In some embodiments, after receiving a SCell activation command from the network node, the terminal device may determine the first SSB occasion for the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity after the first message was received, and then start to monitor the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity from the first SSB occasion.

[0155] Returning back to FIG. 1, in some embodiments, the terminal device may determine, upon the reception of the first message, whether the second cell is unknown or known. For example, in an embodiment, in case a determination that the second cell is unknown, the terminal device may start to monitor the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity.

[0156] Additionally, in some embodiments, the terminal device may further determine, upon the reception of the first message, whether the second cell is FR1 or FR2. For example, in an embodiment, in case a determination that the second cell is an unknown FR2 SCell, the terminal device may start to monitor the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity.

[0157] In FR1, a SCell is known if the following conditions have been met:

[0158] - During the period equal to max (5*measCycleSCell, 5*DRX cycles) for FR1 before the reception of the SCell activation command:

[0159] - the UE has sent a valid measurement report for the SCell being activated and

[0160] - the SSB measured remains detectable according to the cell identification conditions specified in clauses 9.2 and 9.3 in 3GPP technical specification (TS) 38.133.

[0161] - the SSB measured during the period equal to max (5*measCycleSCell, 5*DRX cycles) also remains detectable during the SCell activation delay according to the cell identification conditions specified in clauses 9.2 and 9.3 in 3GPP TS 38.133.

[0162] Otherwise, the SCell is unknown.

[0163] For the first SCell activation in FR2 bands, a SCell is known if the following conditions have been met:

[0164] - During the period equal to 4s for UE supporting power class 1 / 5 and 3s for UE supporting power class 2 / 3 / 4 before UE receives the last activation command for PDCCH TCI, PDSCH TCI (when applicable) and semi-persistent CSI-RS for CQI reporting (when applicable) :

[0165] - the UE has sent a valid L3-RSRP measurement report with SSB index, and

[0166] - SCell activation command is received after L3-RSRP reporting and no later than the time when UE receives MAC-CE command for TCI activation

[0167] - During the period from L3-RSRP reporting to the valid CQI reporting, the reported SSBs with indexes remain detectable according to the cell identification conditions specified in clauses 9.2 and 9.3 in 3GPP TS 38.133, and the TCI state is selected based on one of the latest reported SSB indexes.

[0168] Otherwise, the SCell is unknown.

[0169] In some embodiments, the terminal device may monitor the SSB transmission with the first (long) SSB periodicity in the second cell prior to receiving the SCell activation command.

[0170] Therefore, to speed-up with UE measurement with the benefit of reducing the latency of SCell / PSCell activation procedure, the UE monitoring of SSB transmission periodicity can be adapted, i.e. from the long SSB periodicity to the short SSB periodicity, after UE receiving SCell or PSCell activation command / messages for example. In other words, by means of the proposed SCell activation triggered SSB adaptation, for example, the terminal device can be enabled to start monitoring SSBs assuming a shorter periodicity after receiving the SCell activation command, so as to reduce the SCell activation delay for example for an unknown SCell.

[0171] FIG. 2 is a flow chart depicting a method performed by a terminal device according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The operations in blocks 202 and 204 in FIG. 2 may correspond to the operations in blocks 102 and 104 of FIG. 1.

[0172] At block 206, the terminal device may stop to monitor the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity.

[0173] Additionally, or alternatively, the terminal device may start to monitor a SSB transmission with the first (long) SSB periodicity.

[0174] In some embodiments, the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity may be monitored until a second message for TCI activation is received, e.g., a TCI activation command. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity  may be monitored until a third message for CSI-RS activation or configuration is received, e.g., a semi-persistent CSI-RS (SP-CSI-RS) activation command, or a RRC reconfiguration message configuring the persistent CSI-RS (P-CSI-RS) resources. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity may be monitored until a Layer 1 measurement report (e.g., L1-reference signal receiving power, RSRP, report) or Layer 3 measurement report (i.e., L3 report) is transmitted. The L3 measurement report may be triggered by the SCell activation command for a UE supporting l3-MeasUnknownSCellActivation-r18.

[0175] In some embodiments, as shown in FIG. 5 or FIG. 6, the terminal device may start to monitor a SSB transmission with the first (long) SSB periodicity after receiving the second message or the third message. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the terminal device may start to monitor a SSB transmission with the first (long) SSB periodicity after transmitting a Layer 1 measurement report or Layer 3 measurement report.

[0176] In some embodiments, the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity may be monitored for a predetermined period of time. Additionally, in some embodiments, the terminal device may start to monitor a SSB transmission with the first (long) SSB periodicity after the predetermined period of time since receiving the SCell activation command or the first SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity. The predetermined period of time may be configured / indicated by the network or pre-defined in the specification e.g. the pre-defined value may be set to the SCell activation delay derived by the terminal device. In one example, a timer or counter setting to the predetermined period of time may start when the terminal device receives the SCell activation command or the first SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity. The network node may stop the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity when the timer expires.

[0177] FIG. 3 is a flow chart depicting a method performed by a network node according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The configuration of the entities involved in FIG. 3 can correspond to that of FIG. 1, and will not be repeated here. The specific difference is in that the steps of the method as shown in FIG. 3 may be performed by a network node.

[0178] At block 302, the network node transmits to a terminal device a first message for activating a second cell.

[0179] In some embodiments, the network node may send a SCell activation command to the terminal device for activating the SCell.

[0180] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the network node may use a RRC Reconfiguration message to directly activate the SCell.

[0181] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the network node (e.g., a PCell) may use a RRC message to activate a PSCell.

[0182] And then at block 304, based on transmitting the first message, the network node starts a SSB transmission with the shorter one of the first SSB periodicity and a second SSB periodicity in the second cell.

[0183] In some embodiments, the network node may transmit to the terminal device a single SSB configuration indicating the first (long) SSB periodicity and the second (short) SSB periodicity. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the network node may transmit to the terminal device a separate SSB configuration indicating the second (short) SSB periodicity or a scaling factor for the terminal device such as a UE to determining the second (short) SSB periodicity. Then on the terminal device side, the terminal device may accordingly determine the second (short) SSB periodicity to be used based on at least one of the single SSB configuration, or the separate SSB configuration received for the network node as described above.

[0184] In some embodiments, the second SSB periodicity may be predefined as a default value or using a default scaling factor for determining the second SSB periodicity. For example, in an embodiment, the network node can apply the minimum SSB periodicity e.g. 5ms. Or, in an embodiment, the network node can assume k=0.5 to determine the short SSB periodicity.

[0185] In some embodiments, the network node may determine, upon the transmission of the first message, whether the second cell is unknown or known. For example, in an embodiment, if it is determined that the second cell is unknown, the network node may start the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity. Additionally, in some embodiments, the network node may determine, upon the transmission of the first message, whether the second cell is FR1 or FR2 unknown, as described above. For example, in an embodiment, if it is determined that the second cell is FR2 unknown, the network node may start the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity.

[0186] In some embodiments, the network node may perform a SSB transmission with the long SSB periodicity in the second cell prior to transmitting the SCell activation command. Then on the terminal device side, the terminal device may accordingly monitor the SSB transmission with the long SSB periodicity in the second cell as described above.

[0187] Again, referring to FIG. 5, after sending a SCell activation command and receiving an acknowledgement message, e.g., a hybrid automatic repeat quest, HARQ for the SCell activation command, for example, the network node may start, the SSB transmission with the short SSB periodicity after transmitting the first SSB with the long SSB periodicity since the SCell activation command was transmitted. In such case, the terminal device may accordingly start to monitor the SSB  transmission with the short SSB periodicity (Optionally, an acknowledgement message, e.g., a HARQ, may be sent back to the network node) .

[0188] Similarly, referring to FIG. 6, after sending a SCell activation command and receiving an acknowledgement message, e.g., a HARQ for the SCell activation command for example, the network node may firstly determine the first SSB occasion for the SSB transmission with the short SSB periodicity after the SCell activation command was transmitted. And then the network node may start the SSB transmission with the short SSB periodicity from this first SSB occasion. In this case, at first, the terminal device may accordingly determine that first SSB occasion, and then start to monitor the SSB transmission with the short SSB periodicity from that first SSB occasion.

[0189] FIG. 4 is a flow chart depicting a method performed by a network node according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The operations in blocks 402 and 404 in FIG. 4 may correspond to the operations in blocks 202 and 204 of FIG. 2.

[0190] At block 406, the network node may stop the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity.

[0191] Additionally, or alternatively, the network node may start a SSB transmission with the first (long) SSB periodicity.

[0192] In some embodiments, as shown in FIG. 5 or FIG. 6, the network node may stop the SSB transmission with the short SSB periodicity after transmitting a second message for TCI activation, e.g., a TCI activation command. The terminal device may accordingly monitor the SSB transmission with the short SSB periodicity until the TCI activation command is received.

[0193] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the network node may also stop the SSB transmission with the second SSB periodicity after transmitting a third message for CSI-RS activation or configuration, e.g., a semi-persistent CSI-RS (SP-CSI-RS) activation command, or a RRC reconfiguration message configuring persistent CSI-RS (P-CSI-RS) resources. Therefore, the terminal device may also monitor the SSB transmission with the short SSB periodicity until such SP-CSI-RS or P-CSI-RS is received.

[0194] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the terminal device may monitor the SSB transmission with the short SSB periodicity until a Layer 1 measurement report (i.e., L1-reference signal receiving power, RSRP, report) or Layer 3 measurement report (i.e., L3 report) is transmitted. In this case, the network node may stop the SSB transmission with the short SSB periodicity after receiving the L3 / L1-RSRP report.

[0195] In some embodiments, also as shown in FIG. 5 or FIG. 6, the network node may start a SSB transmission with the long SSB periodicity after transmitting a second message for TCI activation, e.g., a TCI activation command. The terminal device may accordingly start to monitor the SSB transmission with the long SSB periodicity after receiving the TCI activation command.

[0196] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the network node may also start a SSB transmission with the long SSB periodicity after transmitting a third message for CSI-RS activation or configuration, e.g., a semi-persistent CSI-RS (SP-CSI-RS) activation command, or a persistent CSI-RS (P-CSI-RS) configuration. The terminal device may also accordingly start to monitor the SSB transmission with the long SSB periodicity after receiving such SP-CSI-RS or P-CSI-RS.

[0197] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the terminal device may start to monitor a SSB transmission with the long SSB periodicity after transmitting a Layer 1 measurement report (i.e., L1-RSRP report) or Layer 3 measurement report (i.e., L3 report) . In this case, the network node may start the SSB transmission with the long SSB periodicity after receiving the L3 / L1-RSRP report.

[0198] In some embodiments, the network node may stop the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity after a predetermined period of time. Additionally, in some embodiments, the network node may start a SSB transmission with the first (long) SSB periodicity after the predetermined period of time since sending the SCell activation command or the first SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity. The predetermined period of time may be configured / indicated by the network or pre-defined in the specification e.g. the pre-defined value may be set to the SCell activation delay derived by the terminal device such as a UE. In one example, a timer or counter setting to the predetermined period of time may start when the network node sends the SCell activation command or the first SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity. The network node may stop the SSB transmission with the second (short) SSB periodicity when the timer expires.

[0199] Although discussions have been made with respect to the first SSB periodicity being longer than the second SSB periodicity in the previous description, there may be situations where the first SSB periodicity is shorter than the second SSB periodicity in other example embodiments, and the adaptation mechanisms disclosed herein can still be applicable.

[0200] In relation to FIGs. 5 and 6, further details for the example embodiments according to the present disclosure will be provided with respect to the processes in FIG. 1 to FIG 4.

[0201] In both FIG. 5 and FIG. 6, the UE may be configured with SSB transmission with a long and short periodicity e.g. in one SSB configuration or two SSB configurations as described above. The shorter and / or longer periodicities may be (pre-) configured when network (pre-) configures two  periodicities for SSB transmission adaptation, or can be assumed with a default value, as described above. For example, for a shorter periodicity an assumed value of e.g. 5ms if not specified.

[0202] When the SCell is not activated, the SSB transmission is assumed being transmitted with the long SSB periodicity for network energy saving.

[0203] At some time instance, network decides to activate the SCell and hence sends SCell activation command to the UE to activate the SCell.

[0204] As shown in FIG. 5, after receiving the SCell activation command from the network node, the UE may start to monitor the SSB transmission with the short SSB periodicity after receiving the first SSB with the long SSB periodicity since the SCell activation command was received.

[0205] That is, in the Option 1 of FIG. 5, after UE receiving or decoding the SCell activation command, the short SSB periodicity starts to be applied and monitored by UE after the first SSB of long periodicity. In this option, it may take long time for the UE to wait for arrival of the first long SSB.

[0206] As shown in FIG. 6, the UE may firstly determine the first SSB occasion for the SSB transmission with the short SSB periodicity after the first message was received, and then start to monitor the SSB transmission with the short SSB periodicity from the first SSB occasion

[0207] In the Option 2 of FIG. 6, the short SSB periodicity starts to be applied from the first short SSB occasion after receiving or decoding the SCell activation command. This option may allow the short SSB periodicity to be used at earliest occasion which can further reduce the SCell activation delay.

[0208] - With one alternative about the “short SSB occasion” : it can be configured or specified with time reference to the boundary of long SSB transmission occasion.

[0209] - E.g. with one way for simplicity, the long SSB can be fully aligned with some of the short SSBs on the transmission occasion boundary, or as another way a given time offset can be configured for the first SSB transmission with short periodicity with time reference to the boundary of the closed long SSB transmission occasion.

[0210] Therefore, the SSB with short SSB periodicity shall be transmitted at least until UE transmits a L3 report or L1-RSRP report, or UE receiving the TCI activation command or SP-CSI-RS activation command or periodic CSI-RS configuration as described above.

[0211] The short SSB periodicity may be used for example to speed up the cell automatic gain control, AGC, and time / frequency synchronization and L1-RSRP measurement procedure if the SCell is unknown. In one example it could also be used for cell detection. After the L3 / L1-RSRP reporting, network may configure CSI-RS for channel measurement, and hence the SSB transmission can fall back or adapt to long SSB periodicity afterwards as described above.

[0212] To minimize the SSB transmission for network energy saving, the SSB with short periodicity can be transmitted for dedicated scenarios like for activating an (FR2) unknown SCell. That is, if the SCell is known i.e. the UE has sent a valid L3 measurement reporting within a time period before receiving SCell activation command, network will not trigger the SSB transmission with short periodicity. As the UE only need monitor one or two SSBs for activating a known SCell, the SSB with long periodicity may still work, or alternatively, if the short SSB periodicity is not used the network instead may use A-tracking reference signal, TRS, for activating a known SCell. But if the SCell is unknown, the network will initiate SSB with short periodicity according to the timing mentioned above.

[0213] Based on this, the SCell activation delay can be defined based on the short SSB periodicity. The UE shall activate the (unknown) SCell within the SCell activation delay based on a given short SSB periodicity.

[0214] FIG. 7 is an example signaling diagram for SCell activation triggered SSB adaptation according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 7 shows an example of how SSB periodicities are adapted being triggered by a SCell activation command.

[0215] The process may start in step 1 in which UE is in connected mode with PCell. Cell1 is a neighbor cell which may or may not be measured by the UE. As a default, SSBs are transmitted on Cell1 with a long periodicity i.e. SSB_long for network energy saving.

[0216] In step 2, UE indicates it is capable of SSB adaptation and additionally the SSB adaptation triggered by SCell activation command. This capability indicates the UE is able to apply a short SSB periodicity derived based on the options in Step 3 for (unknown) SCell activation if it is configured by the network, and / or a default SSB periodicity if not configured by the network.

[0217] In step 3, network decides to add Cell1 into CA operation and hence sends SCell reconfiguration to add Cell1. In this RRC reconfiguration message, network will indicate the long and short SSB periodicity to be used on Cell1. It is assumed the long SSBs are fully aligned with some of the short SSBs on the boundary and the long SSB periodicity is an integer number of short SSB periodicity. For instance, long SSB periodicity may be 4 times of short SSB periodicity and aligned on the slot boundary. With this configuration, UE may clearly know where to monitor SSB when long / short SSB periodicity applies.

[0218] In step 4 / 5, UE monitors SSB for serving cell measurement with long periodicity. The UE may send a valid L3 measurement reporting in step 6 if there is any, which will determine if the SCell is known or unknown during SCell activation.

[0219] In step 7, network initiates SCell activation command to activate Cell1 and UE responds with HARQ in step 8.

[0220] In step 9, UE checks if the SCell is unknown and is ready to receive SSB with short periodicity if it is unknown. Same determination will be performed at network / Cell1 as Cell1 is able to determine the cell is unknown if it has not received any L3 measurement reporting within a time period before SCell activation command. So network will trigger the transmission of short SSB after sending the SCell activation command if needed for example if the SCell is unknown. This step 9 may be optional. That is, network will always trigger short SSB periodicity when sending SCell activation command, irrespective of known or unknown. In one alternative, if the SCell is known the network may provide A-TRS.

[0221] In step 10 and 13, two options are defined for UE to receive the SSBs with the short periodicity.

[0222] - In Option 1 (Step11 / 12) , the UE starts monitoring SSB from the first SSB with long periodicity after slot wherein n is the slot receiving SCell activation command. Afterwards, SSB with short periodicity are followed.

[0223] - In Option 2 (step 14 / 15) , the UE starts monitoring SSB from the first SSB occasion based on the short periodicity after slot wherein n is the slot receiving SCell activation command. This may provide faster SCell activation than Option 1 but requires UE to calculate the short SSB occasion though no short SSB is transmitted.

[0224] The UE will monitor the SSBs with shorter periodicity for SCell activation. If the SCell is unknown, the UE will do AGC, time / frequency synchronization and L1-RSRP measurements based on SSBs, and will be able to send valid L1-RSRP reporting afterwards in step 16. If the UE has been configured with SCell activation triggered L3 report i.e. reportOnActivation and supports the capability, the UE may also send L3 report after SCell activation command.

[0225] Based on the received L3 / L1 measurement reporting, network can switch the SSB transmission to long periodicity. Alternatively, network may stop SSB transmission with short periodicity after sending TCI activation command or SP-CSI-RS activation / P-CSI-RS configuration, as UE will monitor CSI-RS instead of SSB for channel measurement. The SSB transmission is switched back to long periodicity afterwards.

[0226] With the proposed solutions, the SSB transmission can be switched between long and short periodicity to facilitate the SCell activation. The short SSB periodicity helps reduce the SCell activation delay and minimize the unnecessary SSB transmission to keep network energy saving (NES) benefit.

[0227] Although discussions have been made with respect to a SCell to-be-activated and the usage of a SCell activation command in the previous description, there may be situations where a PSCell is to be activated in other example embodiments, and the adaptation mechanisms disclosed herein with appropriate activation and configuration messages can still be applicable.

[0228] Potential Implementations and Applications

[0229] The SCell activation delay requirement shall be defined based on short SSB periodicity if the UE indicates the support of SCell activation triggered SSB adaptation. The tentative text can be found below.

[0230] If the PCell / PSCell and the target SCell are configured as FR1-FR2-1 CA or if the PCell / PSCell and the target SCell are in a FR2-1 band pair with independent beam management, and the target SCell is unknown to UE and semi-persistent CSI-RS is used for CSI reporting, provided that the side condition is fulfilled, then Tactivation_time is:

[0231] - 6ms + TFirstSSB_MAX + 15*TSMTC_MAX + 8*Trs + TL1-RSRP, measure + TL1-RSRP, report + THARQ + max (Tuncertainty_MAC + TFineTiming + 2ms, Tuncertainty_SP) , or

[0232] - 6ms + TFirstSSB_MAX, enhanced + 15*TSMTC_MAX, enhanced + X1*Trs, enhanced + TL1-RSRP, enhanced_measure+ TL1-RSRP, report + THARQ + max (Tuncertainty_MAC + TFineTiming + 2ms, Tuncertainty_SP) if UE supports [LowerRxBeamSweepingFactorForCellSearch-FR2] and / or [LowerRxBeamSweepingFactorForL1-RSRPmeasurement-FR2] and / or shortMeasInterval-r18 capabilities, and when SCell activation triggered L3 report is not configured or SCell activation triggered L3 report is configured but not triggered.

[0233]

[0234] TSMTC_MAX, enhanced:

[0235] - In FR1 or FR2-1, a UE supporting shortMeasInterval-r18 if the SMTC for SCell being activated is only configured in measObjectNR, TSMTC_MAX, enhanced is the SSB periodicity of SCell being activated. If a UE supporting shortMeasInterval-r18 indicates it is capable of SSBAdaptation, TSMTC_MAX, enhanced is the short SSB periodicity of SCell being activated. Otherwise, TSMTC_MAX, enhanced = TSMTC_MAX.

[0236] ....

[0237] TFirstSSB_MAX: Is the time to the end of the first complete SSB burst indicated by the SMTC, or within 5ms if SMTC is not configured, after slot further fulfilling:

[0238] - In FR1, in case of intra-band contiguous SCell activation or in case of intra-band non-contiguous SCell activation for UE not capable of [intraBandNRCA-NonCollocated-r18] , the occasion when all active serving cells and SCells being activated or released are transmitting SSB bursts in the same slot; in case of intra-band non-contiguous SCell activation for UE capable of [intraBandNRCA-NonCollocated-r18] or in case of inter-band SCell activation, the first occasion when the SCell being activated is transmitting SSB burst.

[0239] - In FR2, the occasion when all active serving cells and SCells being activated or released are transmitting SSB bursts in the same slot.

[0240] TFirstSSB_MAX, enhanced: For a UE supporting shortMeasInterval-r18 in FR1 or FR2-1, if the SMTC for SCell being activated is only configured in the measObjectNR, TFirstSSB_MAX, enhanced is the time to the end of the first complete SSB burst indicated by the SSB periodicity of the SCell being activated, after slot If a UE supporting shortMeasInterval-r18 indicates it is capable of SSBAdaptation, TSMTC_MAX, enhanced is the short SSB periodicity of SCell being activated. Otherwise, TFirstSSB_MAX, enhanced = TFirstSSB_MAX.
