[0054] Fig. 1B illustrates an example of topology 1 associated with aspects of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 1B, an AIoT device 131 directly and bidirectionally communicates with a BS 132. The communication between BS 132 and AoT device 131 includes AIoT data and / or signaling. This topology includes the possibility that the BS transmitting to AIoT device 131 is different from the BS receiving from the AIoT device 131. For example, BS 132 may transmit data and signaling to AIoT device 131 and receive no data or signaling from AIoT device 131. The BS 132 may communicate with AF / AS 134 via a core network node 133. The BS 132 may be the activator and / or reader of the AIoT device 131.

[0055] Fig. 1C illustrates an example of topology 2 associated with aspects of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 1C, an AIoT device 141 communicates with a BS 143 bi-directionally. An intermediate node 142 transfers AIoT data and / or signalling between BS 143 and AIoT device 141. The BS 143 may communicate with AF / AS 145 via a core network node 144. The intermediate node 142 may be the activator and / or reader of the AIoT device 141.

[0056] It is to be understood that the number of devices is only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. The topology 1 and topology 2 may include any suitable number of devices adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more terminal devices or second network devices may be located in the topology 1 and topology 2.

[0057] There are many factors such as ultra-low power consumption, energy harvesting and coexistence with NR in the AIoT, the following issues are critical: (1) control the number of devices to be accessed based on service requirements; (2) control the duration of the device access; and (3) control the number of failed attempts for the device access. On the basis of the environment 100A, the topology 1 and the topology 2 described above, when massive AIoT devices with backscattering transmission are activated, they may respond to the activation signal simultaneously (for example in ways of sensor data report, command  response or identity acknowledge) , this may cause collision. Thus, collision arbitration in the DAC needed to be performed to solve the above issues. It is important to ensure that the requested data can be successfully retrieved from the AIoT device in an effective way in such conflict scenario. This may need potential assistance for the DAC, the valuable feedback for further optimization and the related signaling interaction.

[0058] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution for the user access control functionality, for example, for the Ambient IoT device, or more specifically, the device access control (DAC) functionality. In the communication, such DAC is for the AIoT with backscattering transmission, where massive AIoT devices would response the service request from network. It proposes the potential network assistance information for the DAC, and enables further optimization about the network assistance information based on the valuable feedback, for example the optimization in access and transmission. More specifically, this solution proposes a device access control functionality and the related signaling and parameters interaction between CN node and RAN node. In addition, the solution in RAN node is also proposed to respond the signaling from CN node.

[0059] In this way, with the network assistance information for the DAC, the RAN could optimize the AIoT activation operations and optimize the resource consumption during the activation procedure (for example reasonable simultaneous use of activators, simultaneous use of frequency resources for activation, the time slots for collision arbitration and so on) .

[0060] Reference is now made to Fig. 2, which shows a process 200 for DAC for IoT communication according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The process 200 corresponds to the topology 1 in Fig. 1B. The first device may be a network device in access network (for example, BS 132 or access network node) . The first device may also comprise the activators and the readers corresponding to AIOT device 131. The second device may comprise AF / AS 134 which may communicate with the access network node via a core network (CN) node. It should be understood that AIOT device 131 may comprise a set of AIOT devices or a group of AIOT devices. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to Fig. 1B. The process 200 may involve a first device 132, a CN node 133, AIoT device 131 and a second device 134 as illustrated in Fig. 1B.

[0061] In some embodiments, before starting of the process 200, the information of AIoT device 131 (for example, a group of devices) and its associated activator (s) , reader (s) are known to CN node 133 and second device 134. AIoT device 131 are registered within the  CN (e.g. via offline procedures) and a group of service requirements is associated with the registered AIoT device 131, for example the AIoT related QoS framework.

[0062] In the process 200, first device 132 may receive 210 assistance information for DAC related to AIoT device 131 (e.g. a set of terminal devices) from a second device 134. For example, a second device 134 (e.g. AF / AS) provides the assistance information for DAC to a CN node 133. The CN node 133 forwards the assistance information for DAC to the first device 132 (BS, access network node or gNB) associated to the target AIoT device 131, with optionally a list of target AIoT device 131 IDs or a group ID. The assistance information for DAC may be carried on an AIoT service request. The AIoT service request may be used for inventory, sensing, positioning or command.

[0063] In some embodiments, the assistance information may comprise at least one static parameter or at least one dynamic parameter. The static parameter may be the original service requirements and comprise response delay budget, expected response ratio or etc. The dynamic parameter may be the filtering criteria or the adjusted requirements which may be strict or relaxed. The dynamic parameter may comprise a permitted list of AIOT devices, an excluded list of AIOT devices, maximum response time or the least response number or etc.

[0064] The static parameter and the dynamic parameter work for both the monostatic and bistatic use cases. In the monostatic use cases, the activator and the corresponding reader are the same node (for example, same UE or same gNB) . In the monostatic use cases, the activator and the corresponding reader are the different node (for example, different UE, different gNB or different UE&gNB) . Dynamic parameters and static parameters are shown in the following Table 1.

[0065] Table 1

[0066] The first device 132 may determine 220 at least one requirement of the DAC based on the assistance information. In addition, the first device 132 may determine 230 resource scheduling for the AIOT terminal device 131 based on the at least one requirement of the DAC. The resource scheduling for both activation signal transmission and backscattering signal receiving. In some embodiments, the first device 132 may transmit 240 statistic information on the DAC related to AIOT terminal devices 131. The further details correspond to the process of topology 1 will be described later with reference to Fig. 4.

[0067] Reference is now made to Fig. 3, which shows a process 300 for DAC for IoT communication according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The process 300 corresponds to the topology 2 in Fig. 1C. The first device may be a network device in access network (for example, BS 143 or access network node) . The intermediate device 142 may  comprise the activator and the reader corresponding to AIOT device 141. It should be understood that AIOT device 141 may comprise a set of AIOT devices or a group of AIOT devices. For the purpose of discussion, the process 300 will be described with reference to Fig. 1C. The process 300 may involve a first device 143, AIoT device 141, intermediate device 142, a CN node 144, and a second device 145 as illustrated in Fig. 1B.

[0068] In the process 300, an intermediate device 142 may receive 310 (i) resource scheduling for response signal reception related to AIoT device 141, and (ii) at least one requirement of device access control (DAC) related to the AIoT device 141 from a first device 143. These AIoT device 141 corresponds to this intermediate device 142. Both the resource scheduling and the at least one requirement of device may be related to the corresponding CN node 144, and a second device 145.

[0069] The intermediate device 142 may receive 320 response signals from at least part of the AIoT device 141 based on the resource scheduling. The AIoT device 141 may comprise multiple terminal devices 146 related to the AIOT communication. It should be understood that the response signals correspond to the activation signal may be received by the intermediate device 142 and forwarded to the first device. The activation signal may also be based on the resource scheduling. The further details correspond to the process of topology 2 will be described later with reference to Fig. 5.

[0070] Reference is now made to Fig. 4, which shows a process 400 for DAC for IoT communication according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The process 400 corresponds to the topology 1 in Fig. 1B. The first device may be a network device in access network (for example, BS 132 or access network node) . The first device may also act as the activators and the readers corresponding to AIOT device 131. The second device may comprise AF / AS 134 which may communicate with the access network node via a core network (CN) node 133. It should be understood that AIOT device 131 may comprise a set of AIOT devices or a group of AIOT devices. It should to be understood that a node different from the first device acts as the reader receiving backscattering signal from the Ambient IoT device (bi-static) when the first device act as activator. In this case, the operations belonging to first device will be located on different node, such as activator first device and reader first device respectively or assisting nodes including UEs.

[0071] For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to Fig. 1B. The process 200 may involve a first device 132, a CN node 133, AIoT device 131  and a second device 134 as illustrated in Fig. 1B.

[0072] In some embodiments, before starting of the process 400, CN node 133 and second device 134 may be aware of the association relationship between AIoT device 131 which may comprise a group AIoT devices and network nodes / deployment (for example the cell, first device 132, activators and readers in cell) .

[0073] In the process 400, at 401, second device 134 (e.g. AF or AS) may initiate an AIoT service request, the AF / AS may send AIoT service request with assistance information for DAC to first device 132 via a CN node 133. The CN node 133 may forward the assistance information for DAC to first device 132 associated to the target AIOT device 131, with optionally a list of targeted AIOT device IDs or a group ID.

[0074] In some embodiments, the signaling AIoT service request may reach first device 132 through a CN node 133 (for example Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) ) . But in some example embodiment, a specific functionality in AMF or other node (e.g., AIoT functionality, AIOTF) in CN, or even U-plane based node / functionality (e.g. UPF based) transfer this signaling.

[0075] It should be understood that the signaling AIoT service request may be transmitted from AF / AS. But in another example embodiment, a specific functionality, for example AIoT specified function in CN may transmit this signaling.

[0076] In some embodiments, the signaling AIoT service request may comprise AIOT device 131 IDs or AIOT device 131 group ID, and the service command for inventory, sensing, positioning and so on. The signaling AIoT service request may also comprise information elements as previously described. The information may comprise at least one static parameter or at least one dynamic parameter. The static parameter may correspond to the AIoT related QoS framework, which enables an efficient manner to communicate to the first device 132 to guarantee the QoS requirements associated with the service request generated by the second device 134 (e.g. AS / AF) . For example, the static parameter may comprise response delay budget, expected response ratio or, etc. The dynamic parameter may comprise a permitted list of AIOT devices, an excluded list of AIOT devices, maximum response time or the least response number.

[0077] At 402, first device 132 may determine the DAC requirements according to the DAC related static parameters and dynamic parameters. For example, first device 132 may determine scheduling requirements and priorities based on the static parameters. There may  be the AIoT new parameters are defined to ensure efficiency in the backscattering communication by limiting the initiated backscattering query commands and limiting responses to the level of subscription associated with the service request. It should be noted that AIoT device 131 may be placed out of coverage or blocked hence a response from all AIoT devices may not always be attainable.

[0078] At 403, first device 132 may determine resource scheduling for AIoT device 131 based on the DAC requirements. The resource scheduling is both for activation signal transmission and backscattering signal receiving. For example, due to the involvement of the number of AIoT device 131 in the group that need to be activated, potential conflicts during access, and the time required to complete all device trigger and traffic transmission, the radio resource scheduling determined by first device 132 may need to comprehensively consider all above factors to meet the requirements of DAC.

[0079] At 404, first device 132 may transmit an activation signal of backscattering communication to AIOT device 131 based on the resource scheduling. The activation signal may activate the corresponding AIOT device 131. The activation signal may comprise the AIOT device 131 IDs / AIOT device 131 group ID and command to response to the activation signal with AIOT device 131 ID / AIOT device 131 group ID.

[0080] At 405, first device 132 may receive response signals from at least part of AIOT device 131 based on the resource scheduling. The response signals may comprise data report or identity acknowledge. At 406, once receiving the responses modulated on the backscattering signal from AIOT device 131, first device 132 may perform collision arbitration and determine whether the at least one requirement of the DAC is met. The first device 132 may also derive the DAC related statistics.

[0081] In some embodiments, in the following scenarios of requirement of the DAC, activation signal may need to be retransmitted: (1) the response number / ratio of AIOT device 131 is less than the required number / ratio, (2) the time consumed by most of the AIOT device 131 is less than maximum response time if defined or response delay budget, and (3) AIOT device 131 in the permitted list still has no response. For example, some responses from permitted list are not received due to collision, but responses from excluded list are received and the sum is reached.

[0082] When the at least one requirement of the DAC is not met, at block 407, first device 132 may retransmit the activation signal. For the collision arbitration, it should be noticed  that for the same command, AIOT device 131 would not response again if it has received the acknowledgment. At block 407, first device 132 may then receive new response signals from at least part of AIOT device 131 based on the resource scheduling.

[0083] At 409, first device 132 may perform collision arbitration again and determine whether the at least one requirement of the DAC is met. It is assumed response signal modulated on the backscattering signal in 408 may be satisfied with the DAC requirement. Thus first device 132 may terminate the activation of AIOT device 131. first device 132 may stop transmitting the activation signal to AIOT device 131.

[0084] In some embodiments, in the following scenarios, activation of AIOT device 131 may need to be terminated: (1) the response number / ratio of AIOT device 131 reaches the required number / ratio including the devices which responded in previous round of activation signal retransmission and corresponding response signal reception (2) the time consumed reach the maximum response time or response delay budget if defined, and (3) AIOT device 131 in the permitted list have all responded.

[0085] Although Fig. 4 shows one round of activation signal retransmission and corresponding response signal reception, in other embodiments, there can be multiple rounds of activation signal retransmission and corresponding response signal reception, which is not limited here.

[0086] At 410, first device 132 may transmit a signaling AIoT service response to second device 134 via a CN node 133. This signaling AIoT service response may carry statistic information on the DAC related to AIOT device 131. In some embodiments, the statistic information may comprise: a conflict probability, an actual response number, an actual response ratio, actual time consumption and / or an unresponsive number in a permitted list. It should be noticed that the conflict probability could be counted by the activator in collision arbitration. If activator received a signal in a certain transmission slot but could not detect the device ID, a conflict is counted.

[0087] At 411, after receiving the signaling AIoT service response, second device 134 may update the assistance information for the DAC based on the statistic information comprised in the signaling AIoT service response. Second device 134 may relax some parameters to let first device132 further optimize the AIoT activation signal by updating the DAC dynamic parameters.

[0088] In some embodiments, the updating operation performed by second device 134 may  comprise: (1) increasing maximum response time, (2) decreasing maximum response time, (3) adding at least one AIoT device 131 that has been unresponsive for a long time to a permitted list and / or (4) adding at least one AIoT device 131 that has responded multiple times to a disallowed list. Actual activation time may be changed corresponding to the activation signal / resource scheduled by first device 132. If more frequency or time resources are used for activating, the activation time would be much less. Thus, decreasing the maximum response time but keep the least number means network expecting to use more resource to active AIoT device 131.

[0089] It should be understood that after 411, second device 134 may restart the process 400 with the updated assistance information comprising updated static parameter and / or dynamic parameter.

[0090] Reference is now made to Fig. 5, which shows a process 500 for DAC for IoT communication according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The process 500 corresponds to the topology 2 in Fig. 1C. The first device may be a network device in access network (for example, BS 143 or access network node) . The intermediate device 142 may comprise the activator and the reader corresponding to AIOT device 141. Thus, the operations belonging to intermediate UE will be located on different node, such as activator UE and reader UE respectively. It should be understood that AIOT device 141 may comprise a set of AIOT devices or a group of AIOT devices.

[0091] For the purpose of discussion, the process 500 will be described with reference to Fig. 1C. The process 500 may involve a first device 143, AIoT device 141, intermediate device 142, a CN node 144, and a second device 145 as illustrated in Fig. 1C.

[0092] In some embodiments, before starting of the process 400, CN node 144 and second device 145 may be aware of the association relationship between AIoT device 141 which may comprise a group AIoT devices and network nodes / deployment (for example the cell, first device 143, intermediate device 142, activators and readers in cell) .

[0093] In the process 500, at 501, second device 145 (e.g. AF or AS) may initiate an AIoT service request, the AF / AS may send AIoT service request with assistance information for DAC to first device 143 via a CN node 144. The CN node 143 may forward the assistance information for DAC to first device 143 associated to the target AIOT device 141, with optionally a list of targeted AIOT device IDs or a group ID.

[0094] It should be noticed that the signaling AIoT service request is similar to the signaling  AIoT service request comprising the static parameter and dynamic parameter in Fig. 4. It should be considered that multiple intermediate devices 142 are associated with multiple subsets of AIOT device 141 among the set of AIOT device 141. One intermediate device 142 may be associated with subset of AIOT device 141. At 502, first device 143 may determine one or more requirements of the DAC for a subset of AIOT device 141 among the multiple subsets of AIOT device 141.

[0095] At 503, first device 143 may determine resource scheduling for the subset of terminal devices based on the one or more requirements of the DAC. At 504, first device 143 may transmit the signaling AIoT service request. In some embodiments, this AIoT service request may comprise the one or more requirements of the DAC and the resource scheduling for the AIOT device 141. The resource scheduling may be the resource indication to the corresponding intermediate devices 142. This AIoT service request may comprise AIOT device 141 IDs / AIOT device 141 group ID, and the service command for inventory, sensing, positioning and so on.

[0096] In some embodiments, the resource scheduling may be used for response signal reception related to multiple AIOT device 141. In some embodiments, the resource scheduling may also be used for activation signal transmission related to the multiple AIOT device 141.

[0097] At 505, intermediate devices 142 may transmit an activation signal to the multiple AIOT device 141 based on the resource scheduling. At 506, intermediate devices 142 may receive response signals modulated on the backscattering signal from at least part of the multiple AIOT device 141 based on the resource scheduling. At 507, intermediate devices 142 may perform collision arbitration and determine whether the at least one requirement of the DAC related to the at least part of the multiple AIOT device 141 is met based on the statistic information.

[0098] At 508, intermediate devices 142 may transmit statistic information on the DAC to the first device 143. In some embodiments, the statistic information may comprise: a conflict probability, an actual response number, an actual response ratio, actual time consumption and / or an unresponsive number in a permitted list.

[0099] At 509, intermediate devices 142 may determine to retransmit the activation signal to the multiple AIOT device 141 based on determining that the at least one requirement of the DAC is not met. The at least one requirement of the DAC is similar with the at least one  requirement of the DAC in 406 of Fig. 4.

[0100] At 510, intermediate devices 142 may receive the response signal modulated on the backscattering from at least part of the multiple AIOT device 141. At 511, intermediate devices 142 may continue to check whether the at least one requirement of the DAC related to the at least part of the multiple AIOT device 141 is met. It is assumed response signal modulated on the backscattering signal in 510 may be satisfied with the DAC requirement. Thus intermediate devices 142 may terminate the activation of at least part of the multiple AIOT device 141. The termination condition is similar with the condition in 409 of Fig. 4.

[0101] At 512, intermediate devices 142 may transmit statistic information on the DAC to first device 143. In some embodiments, the statistic information may comprise: a conflict probability, an actual response number, an actual response ratio, actual time consumption and / or an unresponsive number in a permitted list.

[0102] Although Fig. 5 shows one round of activation signal retransmission and corresponding response signal reception, in other embodiments, there can be multiple rounds of activation signal retransmission and corresponding response signal reception, which is not limited here.

[0103] At 513, first device 143 may gather the statistic information in 508 and 512 to check whether the requirement of the DAC is met. At 514, when the requirement of the DAC is met, first device 143 may transmit statistic information on the DAC related to AIOT device 141 to second device 145 via a CN node 144.

[0104] At 515, second device 145 may update the assistance information for the DAC update based on the statistic information. In some embodiments, second device 145 may update the at least one dynamic parameter of the assistance information. The updating procedure is similar to the updating procedure in 411 of Fig. 4.

[0105] In view of the above discussions, some embodiments of the present disclosure propose a solution, which provides the device access control functionality in the CN and provides the DAC information to RAN (for example, access network) . New signaling / information element is also proposed on the interface between CN and RAN. In this way, the control of terminal devices, such as AIOT devices, in the access network can be realized.

[0106] Fig. 6 shows a flowchart of an example method 600 implemented at a first device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of  discussion, the method 600 will be described from the perspective of first device 132 with reference to Fig. 1B and first device 143 with reference to Fig. 1C.

[0107] At block 610, first device 132 (or first device 143) may receive assistance information for device access control (DAC) related to a set of terminal devices from a second device. At block 620, first device may determine at least one requirement of the DAC based on the assistance information. At block 630, first device may determine resource scheduling for the set of terminal devices based on the at least one requirement of the DAC.
