[0002] BACKGROUND

[0003] The embodiments described herein are directed to hand pillows. In particular, the embodiments described herein are directed to hand pillows that enable a user to insert his or her hand and / or part of his or her arm into the pillow assembly and have full control over the position and location of the pillow at all times.

[0004] There are many travel and hand pillows presently on the market. Most travel pillows are stand-alone pillows and do not allow the user to hold the pillow secure against your head or face and may move while the user sleeps or shifts position. Some hand pillows provide a securing mechanism such as a strap, but are not structured to enable the user to maintain full control over the position of the pillow at all times.

[0005] Today, many people operate or otherwise use their smartphones and other electronic devices in bed or while reclining. It is desirable to have a hand pillow that enables the user to maintain full control of the pillow’s position while enabling the user’s fingers to remain free. None of the existing travel or hand pillows enable the user to maintain full control over the position of the pillow while enabling the user’s fingers to remain free to handle objects, text, scroll or the like during use.

[0007] The embodiments described herein are directed to a hand pillow. The hand pillow includes a cushioned section having a casing enclosing an inner cushion portion therein, the casing having a closeable opening to receive cushion fill therein, the casing further comprising a first surface and an opposed second surface, a sleeve section comprising a first panel having first panel secured edges, and first panel outer and inner free edges, and a second panel having second panel secured edges and second panel inner and outer free edges, a pair of spaced apart congruent seams extending along a portion of the length of the first surface of the cushioned section, the seams securing the first and second panel secured edges to the first surface of the casing, first panel inner free edge being adjacent to the second panel inner free edge, the seams having voids along the length thereof to enable a thumb to extend therethrough, thereby forming a sleeve with the first and second panel secured edges fixed to the first surface of the casing. [0032] The present disclosures are directed to a pillow sized and configured to receive a human hand. Furthermore, the present disclosures are directed to a pillow that enables the user to control the position of the pillow without the pillow slipping. The present disclosure also provides the user with the ability to continue to have free use of the user’s fingers to enable operation of a smart phone, tablet and the like.

[0033] The first embodiment 10 is shown in Fig. 1. The first embodiment 10 comprises a hand pillow 11 and includes a first layer 12 and a second layer 14. The first layer 12 has a first surface 13 and a second opposed surface 15. The first layer 12 includes a casing 16 having an exterior 18 and an interior (not shown). The casing 16 further includes a closeable opening 22. The closeable opening 22 may be closed by means of a zipper, Velcro®, hook and loop, a series of buttons, hooks and eyes, or other means to close off the opening from the exterior 18. The opening 22 is designed to receive fill (not shown) which may be comprised of foam, loose down or polyester fill, or other substances to create a cushion. It should be noted that loose down or polyester fill may already be contained within a fabric or polymer casing before it is received within the opening 22. The casing 16 may be made of a fabric such as cotton, linen, silk or the like. The casing 16 may also be made of a polymer material or blend, or wool, or animal hide such as leather, suede or the like.

[0034] It should be noted that the exterior 18 of the first embodiment 10 may be made of any suitable material used for a pillow or bed linen. These include but are not limited to cotton, linen, silk, flannel, satin, polyester, and any blends thereof, and any combinations thereof.

[0035] The second layer 14 is comprised of two sections: a first section 26 and a second section 28. Both sections 26, 28 are preferably made of a lightweight breathable material, such as a mesh. The first section 26 has secured edges 36, 38 and free edges 40, 42. The second section 38 has secured edges 44, 46 and free edges 48, 50. First section 26 has a thumb opening 30 on secured edge 36, and second section 28 has a thumb opening 30 on secured edge 44. The thumb openings 30 enable a user to place their thumb outside of the thumb opening in use, which will be described in more detail below.

[0036] The first and second sections 26, 28 are fixed to the first layer 12 along a pair of congruent seams 32 shown in FIG. 1A. The seams 32 secure the first and second sections 26, 28 to the first layer 12. The seams 32 secure first section secured edges 36, 38 to the first layer 12, and second section secured edges 44, 46 to the first layer 12. First section free edges 40, 42, and second section free edges 48, 50 remain unsecured. Edging 34, as shown in Fig. 1 A, may be used to secure to both the first and second sections 26, 28 along the length of each of the first 36, 38, and second secured edges 44, 46. The edging 34 protects the section 26, 28 material from unraveling along the secured edges 36, 38, 44, 46, and it provides tactile comfort at the section secured edges 36, 38, 44, 46.

[0037] The first 26 and second 28 sections are adjacent to each other when secured to the first layer 12. In particular, free edge 42 of the first section 26 is adjacent to free edge 48 of the second section 28.

[0038] In use, a person may insert his or her hand into either end of the hand pillow 11 between the first surface 13 of the first layer 12 and the second layer 14. This is accomplished by inserting the user’s hand between the first surface 13 of the first layer 12 and first section 26 at the first section free edge 40. The user may extend his or her thumb through the thumb opening 30 on the secured edge 36, of the first section 26. This will enable the user’s fingers to extend outside the second section 28 past the first section free edge 42 and the second section free edge 48 so that they are free to be used while texting, scrolling or the like. This is referred to as the “hand position.” In this position, the user may rotate his or her palm approximately 180° to enable the second surface 15 of the first section 12 to face upwardly. In this position, the user may then rest his or her head on the second surface 15 of the first section and relax.

[0042] It should be noted that the first embodiment 12 is capable of being used by both left and right handed people in both the hand and arm positions. This is accomplished by each approaching the embodiment 12 from a different direction. For a right -handed user, the user’s hand would be slipped into the space between the first surface 13 of the first layer 12 and the second layer 14 at free edge 40. For a left-handed user, the user’s hand would be slipped into the space between the first surface 13 of the second layer 12 and the second layer at free edge 50. Although primarily both hands would be used with the cushion covering the dorsal side, the user could also insert either hand in with the cushion covering the palm side. The first 12 and second 14 layers form a sleeve therebetween by means of the congruent seams 32 securing the first 26 and second 28 sections of the second layer to the first layer. Because the thumb openings 30 enable a user to insert his or her thumb in either the hand or arm positions, the user is able to move the hand pillow 11 into the desired position without the hand pillow twisting or moving out of position. The thumb openings 30, along with the hand inserted between the first 12 and second 14 layers enable a user to fully control the position of the hand pillow.

[0043] Moreover, because of the extended shape of the first layer relative to the position of the thumb when it is placed in the thumb opening 30, the thumb is cushioned by the first layer. Finally, the fill 24 of the first layer 12 provides essential cushioning to the hand pillow 11 that enables a user to hold the hand pillow by means of either the hand or arm positions and rest their face on the second surface 15 of the first layer 12.

Claims

CLAIMS1. A hand pillow comprising: a body; and a sleeve fixed to the body, wherein the sleeve is open at a first end and at a second end opposite the first end.

2. A hand pillow comprising: a cushioned section having a casing enclosing an inner cushion portion therein, the casing having a closeable opening to receive cushion fill therein, the casing further comprising a first surface and an opposed second surface; a sleeve section comprising a first panel having first panel spaced apart secured edges, and first panel spaced apart outer and inner free edges, a pair of spaced apart congruent seams extending along a portion of the length of the first surface of the cushioned section, the seams securing the first panel secured edges to the first surface of the casing, thereby forming a sleeve with the first panel secured edges fixed to the first surface of the casing.

3. The hand pillow of claim 1, wherein the seams have at least one void along the length thereof to enable a thumb to extend therethrough.

4. The hand pillow of claim 1 further comprising a second panel having second panel spaced apart secured edges and second panel spaced apart inner and outer free edges, wherein the spaced apart congruent seams secure the second panel secured edges to the first surface of the casing, the first panel inner free edge being adjacent to the second panel inner free edge.

5. The hand pillow of claim 1 wherein the casing may assume one of the following shapes: rectangle, circle, triangle, pentagon, square.

6. The hand pillow of claim 1 wherein the opening may be closed by one of the following: buttons, snaps, hook and eye, zipper, Velcro® fastener, or the like.

7. The hand pillow of claim 1 wherein the inner cushion portion comprises one or more of the following: viscoelastic foam, polymer foam, down feathers, cotton fill, or a combination thereof.

8. The hand pillow of claim 1 wherein the casing is comprised of cotton, linen, satin, silk, polyester, flannel, or a blend of any of the foregoing, or a combination of any of the foregoing.
