Description

ACCESS POINT RESOURCE SHARING ADJUSTMENT METHOD IN MULTI-ACCESS-POINT SYSTEM AND RELATED WIRELESS COMMUNICATION DEVICETECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present invention relates to wireless communications, and more particularly, to an access point (AP) resource sharing adjustment method in a multi-access-point (MAP) system and a related wireless communication device.BACKGROUND

[0002] With development of the Wi-Fi technology, a MAP system is proposed. In the MAP system, there are multiple APs (e.g., AP multilink devices (MLDs) ) coordinated to serve non-AP stations (STAs) (e.g., non-AP MLDs) . In the MAP system, there are different resource sharing schemes (i.e., coordination schemes) among APs, such as coordinated time division multiple access (Co-TDMA) , coordinated restricted target wake time (Co-RTWT) , coordinated spatial reuse (Co-SR) , and coordinated beamforming (Co-BF) . However, an AP in a MAP system may need more resource sharing from other AP (s) in the same MAP system when it has loaded heavy traffic to transmit or it has heavy latency-sensitive traffic with close delay bounds. On the other hand, an AP in a MAP system may need less resource sharing from other AP (s) in the same MAP system when it has loaded light traffic. Thus, there is a need for an AP resource sharing adjustment scheme in a Wi-Fi MAP system that allows a source AP to request more (or less) resource sharing from target AP (s) in the Wi-Fi MAP system.SUMMARY

[0003] One of the objectives of the claimed invention is to provide an AP resource sharing adjustment method in a MAP system and a related wireless communication device.

[0004] According to a first aspect of the present invention, an exemplary wireless communication method is disclosed. The exemplary wireless communication method includes: generating a first frame, wherein the first frame carries a request for access point (AP) resource sharing adjustment; and sending the first frame to at least one AP in a multi-AP (MAP) system.

[0005] According to a second aspect of the present invention, an exemplary wireless communication device is disclosed. The exemplary wireless communication device includes a network interface circuit and a control circuit. The control circuit is configured to generate a first frame and instruct the network interface circuit to send the first frame to at least one access point (AP) in a multi-AP (MAP) system, wherein the first frame carries a request for AP resource sharing adjustment.

[0006] According to a third aspect of the present invention, an exemplary wireless communication method is disclosed. The exemplary wireless communication method includes: receiving, by an access point (AP) in a multi-AP (MAP) system, a first frame; and parsing a request for access point (AP) resource sharing adjustment from the first frame.

[0007] These and other objectives of the present invention will no doubt become obvious to those of ordinary skill in the art after reading the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment that is illustrated in the various figures and drawings.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0013] Certain terms are used throughout the following description and claims, which refer to particular components. As one skilled in the art will appreciate, electronic equipment manufacturers may refer to a component by different names. This document does not intend to distinguish between components that differ in name but not in function. In the following description and in the claims, the terms "include" and "comprise" are used in an open-ended fashion, and thus should be interpreted to mean "include, but not limited to ... " . Also, the term "couple" is intended to mean either an indirect or direct electrical connection. Accordingly, if one device is coupled to another device, that connection may be through a direct electrical connection, or through an indirect electrical connection via other devices and connections.

[0014] FIG. 1 is a diagram illustrating a first Wi-Fi system that supports the proposed AP resource sharing adjustment scheme according to an embodiment of the present invention. The MAP system 100 may be compliant with IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) , IEEE 802.11bn (Wi-Fi 8) standard, or any wireless local area network (WLAN) standard that supports MAP resource sharing. The MAP system 100 includes a plurality of APs 102, 104_1-104_N (N≥1) . In this embodiment, the AP 102 may be a source AP (shared AP) which shares resource owned by target APs (sharing APs) 104_1-104_N (N≥1) . It should be noted that the AP 102 / 104_1 / 104_N may be an AP MLD or a non-MLD AP, depending on actual application requirements. Hence, regarding the proposed AP resource sharing adjustment scheme, the terms “AP” , “AP MLD” and “non-MLD AP”may be interchangeable.

[0015] By way of example, but not limitation, APs 102, 104_1-104_N may have the same or similar circuit structure. As shown in FIG. 1, AP 102 / 104_1 / 104_N includes a processor 112 / 122_1 / 122_N, a memory 114 / 124_1 / 124_N, a control circuit 116 / 126_1 / 126_N, and a network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N, where the network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N includes a transmitter (TX) circuit 118 / 128_1 / 128_N and a receiver (RX) circuit 120 / 130_1 / 130_N. In a case where the AP 102 / 104_1 / 104_N is an MLD, the TX circuit 118 / 128_1 / 128_N may include multiple TX chains for different radio frequency (RF) bands, and the RX circuit 120 / 130_1 / 130_N may include multiple RX chains for different RF bands.

[0016] The memory 114 / 124_1 / 124_N is configured to store a program code. The processor 112 / 122_1 / 122_N is configured to load and execute the program code to manage the AP 102 / 104_1 / 104_N. The control circuit 116 / 126_1 / 126_N is configured to control communications with other Wi-Fi devices. For example, the control circuit 116 / 126_1 / 126_N controls the TX circuit 118 / 128_1 / 128_N of the network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N to send packets (i.e., physical layer protocol data units (PPDUs) ) , and controls the RX circuit 120 / 122_1 / 122_N of the network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N to receive packets (i.e., PPDUs) , where one or more media access control (MAC) frames (i.e., MAC layer protocol data units (MPDUs) ) may be carried by the same packet (i.e., PPDU) .

[0017] It should be noted that only the components pertinent to the present invention are illustrated in FIG. 1. In practice, each of APs 102, 104_1-104_N may include additional components to achieve designated functions.

[0018] In this embodiment, each of the APs 102, 104_1-104_N in the same MAP system 100 supports the proposed AP resource sharing adjustment scheme. The AP 102 is a source AP (shared AP) . Hence, the control circuit 116 of the AP 102 generates a frame F1, and instructs the network interface circuit 117 (particularly, TX circuit 118 of network interface circuit 117) to send the frame F1 to multiple APs 104_1-104_N (N≥2) , where the frame F1 is configured to carry a request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment. Each of APs 104_1-104_N (N≥2) is a target AP (sharing AP) that can share a portion of its acquired resource to the source AP (shared AP) . Hence, the network interface circuit 127_1 / 127_N (particularly, RX circuit 130_1 / 130_N of network interface circuit 127_1 / 127_N) of the AP 104_1 / 104_N receives the frame F1, and the control circuit 126_1 / 126_N of the AP 104_1 / 104_N parses the request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment from the frame F1. For example, the frame F1 may be a beacon frame that is broadcasted to all other APs including APs 104_1-104_N (N≥2) . For another example, the frame F1 may be a multicast frame that is multicast to selected APs including APs 104_1-104_N (N≥2) .

[0019] When there are no additional contents in the frame F1 that specify which APs are requested for resource sharing adjustment, any of the APs 104_1-104_N (N≥2) that receives the frame F1 can adjust its sharing algorithm (i.e., coordination scheme) to fit the request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment. When there are additional contents in the frame F1 that specify which APs are requested for resource sharing adjustment, only those requested APs included in APs 104_1-104_N (N≥2) that receive the frame F1 need to do the sharing algorithm (i.e., coordination scheme) adjustment. In some embodiments of the present invention, the frame F1 may have the same request contents (i.e., the same parameters set for resource sharing adjustment) for all requested APs, or may have different request contents (i.e., different parameters set for resource sharing adjustment) for different requested APs, respectively.

[0020] It should be noted that there is no acknowledgement (ACK) to the frame F1 being a beacon frame or a multicast frame. Using the beacon frame / multicast frame to carry the request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment is easier for implementation. Since there is no ACK to the frame F1 being a beacon frame or a multicast frame, the AP 102 cannot know if the request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment is received by APs 104_1-104_N (N≥2) or not. To address this issue, the present invention further proposes using a unicast frame to carry a request for AP resource sharing adjustment.

[0021] FIG. 2 is a diagram illustrating a second Wi-Fi system that supports the proposed AP resource sharing adjustment scheme according to an embodiment of the present invention. The MAP system 200 may be compliant with IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) , IEEE 802.11bn (Wi-Fi 8) standard, or a next-generation Wi-Fi standard. The MAP system 200 includes a plurality of APs 202, 204_1-204_N (N≥1) . The AP 202 may be a source AP (shared AP) which shares resources owned by target APs (sharing APs) 204_1-204_N (N≥1) . It should be noted that the AP 202 / 204_1 / 204_N may be an AP MLD or a non-MLD AP, depending on actual application requirements. Hence, regarding the proposed AP resource sharing adjustment scheme, the terms “AP” , “AP MLD” and “non-MLD AP” may be interchangeable.

[0022] By way of example, but not limitation, APs 202, 204_1-204_N may have the same or similar circuit structure. As shown in FIG. 2, AP 202 / 204_1 / 204_N includes a processor 212 / 222_1 / 222_N, a memory 214 / 224_1 / 224_N, a control circuit 216 / 226_1 / 226_N, and a network interface circuit 217 / 227_1 / 227_N, where the network interface circuit 217 / 227_1 / 227_N includes a TX circuit 218 / 228_1 / 228_N and an RX circuit 220 / 230_1 / 230_N. In a case where the AP 202 / 204_1 / 204_N is an MLD, the TX circuit 218 / 228_1 / 228_N may include multiple TX chains for different RF bands, and the RX circuit 220 / 230_1 / 230_N may include multiple RX chains for different RF bands. It should be noted that only the components pertinent to the present invention are illustrated in FIG. 2. In practice, each of APs 202, 204_1-204_N may include additional components to achieve designated functions. Since a person skilled in the art can readily understand operations and functions of these components shown in FIG. 2 after reading above paragraphs directed to the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, similar description is omitted here for brevity.

[0023] In this embodiment, each of the APs 202, 204_1-204_N in the same MAP system 200 supports the proposed AP resource sharing adjustment scheme. The AP 202 is a source AP (shared AP) . Hence, the control circuit 216 of the AP 202 generates a unicast frame F21, and instructs the network interface circuit 217 (particularly, TX circuit 218 of network interface circuit 217) to send the unicast frame F21 to only a single AP (e.g., AP 204_1) . In addition, the control circuit 216 of the AP 202 generates another unicast frame F2N, and instructs the network interface circuit 217 (particularly, TX circuit 218 of network interface circuit 217) to send the unicast frame F2N to only a single AP (e.g., AP 204_N) . Each of the unicast frames F21 and F2N is configured to carry a request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment. The APs 204_1-204_N (N≥2) are target APs (sharing APs) . Hence, the network interface circuit 227_1 / 227_N (particularly, RX circuit 230_1 / 230_N of network interface circuit 227_1 / 227_N) of the AP 204_1 / 204_N receives the unicast frame F21 / F2N, and the control circuit 226_1 / 226_N of the AP 204_1 / 204_N parses the request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment from the unicast frame F21 / F2N.

[0024] In this embodiment, the control circuit 226_1 of the AP 204_1 further generates a unicast frame F12 in response to the unicast frame F12 that carries the request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment, and instructs the network interface circuit 227_1 (particularly, TX circuit 228_1 of network interface circuit 227_1) to send the unicast frame F12 to the AP 202 that sends the unicast frame F21, where the unicast frame F12 carries a response RSP to acknowledge the request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment. Similarly, the control circuit 226_N of the AP 204_N generates a unicast frame FN2 in response to the unicast frame F2N that carries the request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment, and instructs the network interface circuit 227_N (particularly, TX circuit 228_N of network interface circuit 227_N) to send the unicast frame FN2 to the AP 202 that sends the unicast frame F2N, where the unicast frame FN2 carries a response RSP to acknowledge the request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment. It should be noted that the request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment as indicated by the unicast frame F21 and the request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment as indicated by the unicast frame F2N may have the same request contents (i.e., the same parameters set for resource sharing adjustment) or different request contents (i.e., different parameters set for resource sharing adjustment) .

[0025] The network interface circuit 217 (particularly, RX circuit 220 of network interface circuit 217) of the AP 202 receives the unicast frame F12, and the control circuit 216 of the AP 202 parses the response RSP from the unicast frame F12. Similarly, the network interface circuit 217 (particularly, RX circuit 220 of network interface circuit 217) of the AP 202 receives the unicast frame FN2, and the control circuit 216 of the AP 202 parses the response RSP from the unicast frame FN2.

[0026] The unicast frame can be transmitted between APs via the front-haul (FH) or the back-haul (BH) of the MAP system 200. For BH, depending on the architecture, the unicast frame can be transmitted directly to the target AP, or can be transmitted to a common-AP (C-AP) entity and then forwarded to the target AP by the C-AP entity.

[0027] Additional information can be carried in the unicast frame F21 / F2N that acts as a response frame. For example, the target AP may accept / reject the request REQ with a reason code, or may provide other parameters to respond to the request REQ. To put is simply, the unicast frame F21 / F2N with acknowledgement from the target AP 204_1 / 204_N helps the source AP 202 to know if the request is received and to get more information of the target AP’s action.

[0028] It is possible that an associated non-AP STA is aware of the coordination schemes among APs in the same MAP system. Hence, a request for AP resource sharing adjustment may be initiated by a non-AP STA.

[0029] FIG. 3 is a diagram illustrating a third Wi-Fi system that supports the proposed AP resource sharing adjustment scheme according to an embodiment of the present invention. The Wi-Fi system 300 may be compliant with IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) , IEEE 802.11bn (Wi-Fi 8) standard, or any WLAN standard that supports MAP resource sharing. The Wi-Fi system 300 includes a MAP system 303 having a plurality of APs 304_1-304_N (N≥2) . The AP 304_1 may be a source AP (shared AP) which shares resources owned by target APs (sharing APs) 304_i (2≤i≤N) . In this embodiment, the Wi-Fi system 300 further includes a non-AP STA 302 that is associated to the AP 304_1. It should be noted that the non-AP STA 302 may be a non-AP MLD or a non-MLD STA, depending on actual application requirements, and the AP 304_1 / 304_N may be an AP MLD or a non-MLD AP, depending on actual application requirements. Hence, regarding the proposed AP resource sharing adjustment scheme, the terms “non-AP STA” , “non-AP MLD” and “non-MLD STA” may be interchangeable, and the terms “AP” , “AP MLD” and “non-MLD AP” may be interchangeable.

[0030] By way of example, but not limitation, the non-AP STA 302 and APs 304_1-304_N may have the same or similar circuit structure. As shown in FIG. 3, non-AP STA 302 / AP 304_1 / AP 304_N includes a processor 312 / 322_1 / 322_N, a memory 314 / 324_1 / 324_N, a control circuit 316 / 326_1 / 326_N, and a network interface circuit 317 / 327_1 / 327_N, where the network interface circuit 317 / 327_1 / 327_N includes a TX circuit 318 / 328_1 / 328_N and an RX circuit 320 / 330_1 / 330_N. In a case where the non-AP STA 302 / AP 304_1 / AP 304_N is an MLD, the TX circuit 318 / 328_1 / 328_N may include multiple TX chains for different RF bands, and the RX circuit 320 / 330_1 / 330_N may include multiple RX chains for different RF bands. It should be noted that only the components pertinent to the present invention are illustrated in FIG. 3. In practice, each of non-AP STA 302 and APs 304_1-304_N may include additional components to achieve designated functions. Since a person skilled in the art can readily understand operations and functions of these components shown in FIG. 3 after reading above paragraphs directed to the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, similar description is omitted here for brevity.

[0031] In this embodiment, each of the non-AP STA 302 (which is associated to the AP 304_1) and the APs 304_1-304_N in the same MAP system 303 supports the proposed AP resource sharing adjustment scheme. The AP 304_1 is a source AP (shared AP) , and the associated non-AP STA 302 tries to request more (or less) resource sharing from other APs 304_i (2≤i≤N) in the MAP system 303 to meet the traffic requirements of the non-AP STA 302. Hence, the control circuit 316 of the non-AP STA 302 generates a non-AP STA initiated frame F31, and instructs the network interface circuit 317 (particularly, TX circuit 318 of network interface circuit 317) to send the non-AP STA initiated frame F31 to the AP 304_1, where the non-AP STA initiated frame F31 is configured to carry a request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment. The network interface circuit 327_1 (particularly, RX circuit 330_1 of network interface circuit 327_1) of the AP 304_1 receives the non-AP STA initiated frame F31, and the control circuit 326_1 of the AP 304_1 parses the request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment from the non-AP STA initiated frame F31. In some embodiments of the present invention, the request REQ initiated from the non-AP STA 302 may carry simplified parameters different from the AP-to-AP request (e.g., F1 shown in FIG. 1 or F21 / F2N shown in FIG. 2) . For example, the request REQ initiated from the non-AP STA 302 may have no coordination scheme indicators or no quantized parameters.

[0032] In this embodiment, the control circuit 326_1 of the AP 304_1 generates a frame F13 in response to the non-AP STA initiated frame F31 that carries the request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment, and instructs the network interface circuit 327_1 (particularly, TX circuit 328_1 of network interface circuit 327_1) to send the frame F13 to the non-AP STA 302, where the frame F13 carries a response RSP to indicate whether the request REQ for AP resource sharing adjustment is accepted or rejected by the AP 304_1. The network interface circuit 317 (particularly, RX circuit 320 of network interface circuit 317) of the non-AP STA 302 receives the frame F13, and the control circuit 316 of the non-AP STA 302 parses the response RSP from the frame F13.

[0033] The AP 304_1 may reject the non-AP STA’s request by responding the frame F13 to the non-AP STA 302. If the AP 304_1 accepts the non-AP STA’s request by responding the frame F13 to the non-AP STA 302, the AP 304_1 may forward the non-AP STA’s request REQ of AP resource sharing adjustment (i.e., the same parameters of resource sharing adjustment) to other APs (sharing APs) 304_i (2≤i≤N) . For example, the control circuit 326_1 of the AP 304_1 instructs the network interface circuit 327_1 (particularly, TX circuit 328_1 of network interface circuit 327_1) to forward the non-AP STA initiated frame F31 to the AP 304_N. Hence, the network interface circuit 327_N (particularly, RX circuit 330_N of network interface circuit 327_N) receives the non-AP STA initiated frame F31 forwarded by the AP 304_1, and the control circuit 326_N parses the request REQ of AP resource sharing adjustment from the non-AP STA initiated frame F31. However, this is for illustrative purposes only, and is not meant to be a limitation of the present invention. In an alternative design, if the AP 304_1 accepts the non-AP STA’s request by responding the frame F13 to the non-AP STA 302, the AP 304_1 may generate another request REQ’ of AP resource sharing adjustment (i.e., different parameters set for resource sharing adjustment) through applying modification to the non-AP STA’s request REQ of AP resource sharing adjustment carried in the non-AP STA initiated frame F31, and sends another request REQ’ of AP resource sharing adjustment to other APs (sharing APs) 304_i (2≤i≤N) . For example, the control circuit 326_1 of the AP 304_1 generates a frame F31’ that is configured to carry another request REQ’ of AP resource sharing adjustment (which may be set based on the request REQ with some modifications to fit both traffic requirements of AP 304_1 and non-AP STA 302) , and instructs the network interface circuit 327_1 (particularly, TX circuit 328_1 of network interface circuit 327_1) to send the frame F31’ to the AP 304_N. Hence, the network interface circuit 327_N (particularly, RX circuit 330_N of network interface circuit 327_N) receives the frame F31’ from the AP 304_1, and the control circuit 326_N parses the request REQ’ of AP resource sharing adjustment from the frame F31’ .

[0034] There may be multiple coordination schemes established among APs in the same MAP system, so the request for AP resource sharing adjustment needs to specify which coordination scheme (s) are requested for resource sharing adjustment. In some embodiments of the present invention, the request may have a simple one-bit indicator set to indicate the source AP needs more sharing resource or less sharing resource. In some embodiments of the present invention, additional granularity, such as increasing / decreasing the percentage from the current resource sharing, may be set in the request. For an AP MLD, there may be different coordination schemes established on different links. The request may specify which link’s coordination scheme is requested for resource sharing adjustment. In some embodiments, cross-link signaling may be used to indicate adjustment of a coordination scheme on a second link of an AP MLD by sending a request for AP resource sharing adjustment via a first link of the AP MLD. In other words, the AP MLD may adjust coordination schemes on multiple links in response to a request for AP resource sharing adjustment that is transmitted via only one of the multiple links.

[0035] In some embodiments of the present invention, some or all of the above-mentioned information may be carried in an information element 400 as shown in FIG. 4. The identifier (ID) of the source AP 102 / 202 / 304_1 that requires more or less sharing resource from sharing AP (s) can be recorded in the “Source AP ID” field. The ID of one target AP 104_1 / 104_N / 204_1 / 204_N / 304_N requested to have resource sharing adjustment can be recorded in the “Target AP ID” field. The number of “Target AP ID” fields included in the same information element 400 depends on the number of requested APs. In this embodiment, each “Target AP ID” field is immediately followed one “Scheme details” field. FIG. 5 is a diagram illustrating a format of a “Scheme details” field included in the information element 400 shown in FIG. 4. The “Link bitmap” subfield is set to indicate which link’s coordination scheme is requested. The “Scheme ID” subfield is set to indicate which coordination scheme is to be adjusted. For example, when the coordination scheme to be adjusted is co-TDMA, the “Scheme ID”subfield may be set by 0; when the coordination scheme to be adjusted is co-RTWT, the “Scheme ID” subfield may be set by 1; when the coordination scheme to be adjusted is co-SR, the “Scheme ID” subfield may be set by 2; and when the coordination scheme to be adjusted is co-BF, the “Scheme ID” subfield may be set by 3. The “Increase / decrease” subfield is set to indicate that AP resource sharing adjustment is an increase of resource sharing or a decrease of resource sharing. For example, when the AP resource sharing adjustment is a decrease of resource sharing, the “Increase / decrease” subfield may be set by 0; and when the AP resource sharing adjustment is an increase of resource sharing, the “Increase / decrease” subfield may be set by 1. The “Percentage” subfield is set to indicate a percentage of AP resource sharing adjustment. For example, when a non-zero value is recorded in the “Percentage” subfield, the percentage of AP resource sharing adjustment is equal to the non-zero value multiplied by 6.66%. Hence, the “Increase / decrease” subfield and the “Percentage” subfield jointly define an increasing percentage from the current resource sharing or a decreasing percentage from the current resource sharing.

[0036] Those skilled in the art will readily observe that numerous modifications and alterations of the device and method may be made while retaining the teachings of the invention. Accordingly, the above disclosure should be construed as limited only by the metes and bounds of the appended claims.
