Description

AQUEOUS HYDROXYACRYLIC RESIN SECONDARY DISPERSIONTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present application relates to an aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion. The present application further relates to a method for preparing an aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion and an aqueous coating composition comprising such dispersion.BACKGROUND

[0002] With the increasingly stringent environmental regulations and the enhancement of people's environmental awareness, waterborne coatings are gradually replacing traditional solvent-based coatings as a hot spot for research and application nowadays. Aqueous acrylic resins, as one of the most commonly used waterborne resins, have been widely used in industrial paints, among which aqueous (hydroxy) acrylic resins are often used in conjunction with an isocyanate curing agent due to the advantages of high gloss, good weathering resistance, and good color preservation, which are widely used in decorative, decoration, household appliances, furniture, internal and external construction and other fields.

[0003] At present, aqueous hydroxyacrylic resins mainly include hydroxyacrylic emulsions (primary dispersion) and hydroxyacrylic resin dispersions (secondary dispersion) . Hydroxyacrylic resin dispersions can be produced by self-emulsification process without the addition of small molecule emulsifiers and can be used to control the molecular weight size and molecular weight distribution during the solution polymerization stage according to the needs. However, the gloss of the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin dispersion (secondary dispersion) is generally poor, and even if conventional functional monomers are added, the gloss is difficult to meet certain requirements; at the same time, the hydrophobicity of the usually added functional monomers is strong, which will affect the water dispersibility of the resin in the later stage, thereby affecting the storage stability and construction viscosity of the dispersion, so it is necessary to balance the gloss and storage stability.

[0004] Therefore, in order to balance the gloss and storage stability, it is of great significance to research and develop new secondary dispersions of aqueous hydroxyacrylic resins.SUMMARY

[0005] The present application meets the urgent needs of the above industrial coatings and provides an acrylic resin product suitable for formulating aqueous coating compositions with high gloss and balanced properties.

[0006] In particular, an aspect of the present application provides an aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion comprising an acrylic polymer obtained by solution polymerization of monomer mixture I, monomer mixture II and an initiator; wherein the monomer mixture I comprises a functional monomer A of the following  formula:  wherein R is hydrogen or methyl and n is from 1 to 10, preferably from 2 to 5; the monomer mixture II comprises a reactive emulsifier; and each of the monomer mixtures I and II further comprises: a) hard monomers; b) soft monomers; c) hydroxyl C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylate; and d) optionally other functional monomers different from functional monomer A and  hydroxyl C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylate.

[0007] In another aspect, the present application provides method for preparing the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion according to the present application, comprising the steps of: (1) mixing monomer mixture I with a solvent to obtain a first monomer mixture, mixing  monomer mixture II with a solvent to obtain a second monomer mixture, mixing initiator A with a solvent to obtain a first initiator mixture, and mixing initiator B with a solvent to obtain a second initiator mixture; (2) adding the first monomer mixture and the first initiator mixture dropwise; (3) at the end of dropwise addition of the first initiator mixture, adding the second initiator  mixture dropwise; at the end of dropwise addition of the first monomer mixture, adding the second monomer mixture dropwise to obtain a reaction solution; and (4) neutralizing the reaction solution and adding water to the resulting acrylic polymer to  obtain the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion.

[0008] In a further aspect, the present application provides an aqueous coating composition comprising. (i) the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion according to the present  application; and (ii) optionally a curing agent, wherein a cured coating formed from the aqueous coating composition has a gloss level  of 80 or higher at 20° and / or a gloss level of 90 or higher at 60°.

[0009] In a further aspect, the present application provides an article comprising: a substrate having at least one main surface; and a coating applied directly or indirectly to the main surface of the substrate, the coating  being formed from the aqueous coating composition according to the present application.

[0010] The inventors of the present application have innovatively provided an aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion, comprising an acrylic polymer formed by solution polymerization of a monomer mixture. During the preparation of the acrylic polymer, a special functional monomer with a long-chain benzene ring is employed to ensure resin gloss under medium hydroxyl value conditions. Additionally, the present application utilizes a reactive emulsifier to guarantee the final stability, particle size, and appropriate viscosity for use. In the prior art, in order to improve the gloss of the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion, styrene and gloss-enhancing monomers are usually introduced, but it is easy to make the hydrophobicity of the resin increase, which leads to a decrease in the stability of the dispersion when water is added, and the resulting dispersion obtained has a larger particle size, poorer storage stability, and a correspondingly larger viscosity. The present application uses a reactive emulsifier, which can improve the dispersibility of the resin in water, and thus ensure that the particle size and viscosity of the dispersion are in the appropriate range for use.

[0011] The inventors of the present application surprisingly found that the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion according to the present application has excellent storage stability compared to other waterborne latexes or aqueous dispersions commonly used in the coatings market, and can be stably stored at 50℃ for at least 30 days.

[0012] The inventors of the present application also surprisingly found that cured coatings formed from aqueous coating compositions comprising the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersions according to the present application have a gloss level of 90 or higher at 60°, meeting the market demand for high-gloss aqueous coatings.

[0013] The details of one or more embodiments of the disclosure are set forth in the following description. Other features, objects, and advantages of the disclosure will be apparent from the description and from the claims.Definitions

[0014] As used herein, "a" , "an" , "the" , "at least one" , and "one or more" are used interchangeably. Thus, for example, a coating composition that comprises "an" additive can be interpreted to mean that the coating composition includes "one or more" additives. As used herein, the singular forms are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise.

[0015] Where compositions are described as having, including, or comprising specific components, it is contemplated that the compositions do not exclude optional components not covered by the present application and it is also contemplated that the compositions may consist essentially of, or consist of, the recited components; or where processes are described as having, including, or comprising specific process steps, it is contemplated that the processes as disclosed herein do not exclude optional process steps not covered by the present application and it is also contemplated that the processes may consist essentially of, or consist of, the recited steps.

[0016] For the sake of brevity, only certain ranges are explicitly disclosed herein. However, it should be understood that any lower limit may be combined with any upper limit to recite a range not explicitly recited, as well as, any lower limit may be combined with any other lower limit to recite a range not explicitly recited, in the same way, any upper limit may be combined with any other upper limit to recite a range not explicitly recited. Additionally, although not explicitly recited, every point or individual value within a range is expressly included in the range. Thus, every point or individual value may serve as its own lower or upper limit and be combined with any other point or individual value or any other lower or upper limit, to form a range not explicitly recited.

[0017] In the present application, the term "high-gloss coating" or "coating with high gloss" refers to a coating with a gloss level of at least 85, preferably at least 90. The gloss level is measured at a reflection angle of 60° by means of a Sheen orifice gloss meter. The “high-gloss (or high-gloss level) aqueous coating composition"refers to an aqueous coating composition from which the formed coating is a high-gloss coating as defined above.

[0020] The terms “preferred” and “preferably” refer to embodiments of the present application that may afford certain benefits, under certain circumstances. However, other embodiments may also be preferred, under the same or other circumstances. Furthermore, the recitation of one or more preferred embodiments does not imply that other embodiments are not useful, and is not intended to exclude other embodiments from the scope of the present application.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0021] According to a first aspect of the present application, the present application provides an aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion comprising an acrylic polymer obtained by solution polymerization of monomer mixture I, monomer mixture II and an initiator; wherein the monomer mixture I comprises a functional monomer A of the following  formula:  wherein R is hydrogen or methyl and n is from 1 to 10, preferably from 2 to 5; the monomer mixture II comprises a reactive emulsifier; and each of the monomer mixtures I and II further comprises: a) hard monomers; b) soft monomers; c) hydroxyl C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylate; and d) optionally other functional monomers different from functional monomer A and  hydroxyl C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylate.

[0022] In the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion according to the present application, the acrylic polymers aggregate to form a dispersed phase. In the embodiments of the present application, the dispersed phase has a particle size in the range of 100 nm to 220 nm, preferably in the range of 110 nm to 190 nm. The size of the dispersed phase can be measured by the Z-average particle size known in the art, which means, the size of the dispersed phase determined by dynamic light scattering, e.g., using a Marvlen Zetasizer 3000HS microscopic particle size analyzer.

[0023] In the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion according to the present application, the molecular weight of the acrylic polymers, as well as the molecular weight distribution, is a parameter that can affect the gloss of the aqueous coating composition. In one embodiment of the present application, the acrylic polymer has a number average molecular weight (Mn) in the range of 400-30,000 g / mol, preferably in the range of 1,000-15,000 g / mol, and a weight average molecular weight (Mw) in the range of 1,000-25,000 g / mol, preferably in the range of 5,000-20,000 g / mol, and the molecular weight distribution coefficient (D=Mw / Mn) is in the range of 1.5-4.7. The molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution coefficient can be determined using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) , for example Agilent 1260.

[0024] In the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion according to the present application, the hydroxyl value of the acrylic polymer also affects, to a certain extent, the gloss of the aqueous coating composition. Thus, according to an embodiment of the present application, the acrylic polymer has a hydroxyl value greater than 60 mg KOH / g. In an embodiment of the present application, the acrylic polymer has a hydroxyl value in the range of 82.5-125.4 mg KOH / g, preferably a hydroxyl value in the range of 99-115.5 mg KOH / g. The hydroxyl value is determined by titration.

[0025] The inventors of the present application surprisingly found that aqueous dispersions of acrylic polymers having molecular weights and molecular weight distributions in the above ranges, and preferably also having hydroxyl values in the above ranges, can be formulated to form aqueous coating compositions with a high gloss.

[0026] In the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion according to the present application, the acrylic polymer may have a glass transition temperature (Tg) from 25℃ to 45℃, preferably from 30℃ to 40℃.

[0027] The term “Tg” herein stands for the glass transition temperature and is well known to be the temperature at which a polymer changes from a glassy, brittle state to a rubbery state. Tg values may be determined experimentally using techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) or calculated using the Fox equation. Unless otherwise stated, the Tg values and ranges given herein are based on calculated Tg values using the Fox equation.

[0028] The Tg, in degrees Kelvin, of a copolymer having “n” copolymerized comonomers is given by the weight fractions W of each comonomer type and the Tg’s of the homopolymers (in Kelvin) derived from each comonomer according to the Fox equation: The calculated Tg in Kelvin may be  readily converted to ℃.

[0029] Although not wishing to be bound by theory, the inventors believe that the Tg of the Tg of the acrylic polymers largely affects the ability of the acrylic polymers as film-forming resins to condense into a film. According to the present application, the Tg of the acrylic polymer is designed to be from 25℃ to 45℃, preferably from 30℃ to 40℃, in order for the polymer to obtain the desired film-forming properties, as well as coating processability.

[0030] The aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion according to the present application comprises an acrylic polymer obtained by solution polymerization of monomer mixture I, monomer mixture II and an initiator. The monomer mixture I comprises, with respect to the total weight of the monomer mixture I, a) 15-45 wt%of the hard monomer; b) 15-35 wt%of the soft monomer; c) 10-25 wt%of the hydroxyl C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylate; d) 0-10 wt%of other functional monomers different from functional monomer A and  hydroxyl C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylate; and e) 2-15 wt%of the functional monomer A.

[0031] The total amount of each component in the monomer mixture I is 100 wt%.

[0032] The monomer mixture II comprises, with respect to the total weight of the monomer mixture II, a) 5-15 wt%of the hard monomer; b) 5-25 wt%of the soft monomer; c) 20-50 wt%of the hydroxyl C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylate; d) 5-30 wt%of other functional monomers different from functional monomer A and the  hydroxyl C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylate; and f) 2-25 wt%of the reactive emulsifier.

[0033] The total amount of each component in the monomer mixture II is 100 wt%.

[0034] The meanings of soft monomer and hard monomer are well known in the art. In the context of the present application, soft monomers and hard monomers can be identified based on the glass transition temperature of their homopolymers, i.e. homopolymers of soft monomers have a lower glass transition temperature (e.g., a glass transition temperature of less than 25℃) ; homopolymers of hard monomers have a higher glass transition temperature (e.g., a glass transition temperature of more than 45℃) . The ratio between the soft and hard monomers modulates the film-forming properties, bonding properties, mechanical properties, etc., of the polymer, thereby imparting the desired overall properties of the polymer.

[0035] In the embodiments according to the present application, the soft monomer is selected from isooctyl acrylate, butyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, lauryl acrylate, octadecyl acrylate, or any combination thereof. The hard monomer is selected from vinyl aromatic compounds having up to 20 carbon atoms, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, isobornyl methacrylate, vinyl versatate, cyclohexyl methacrylate, or any combination thereof. The other functional monomers are selected from acrylamide, methacrylamide, N-hydroxymethacrylamide, diacetone acrylamide, methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, itaconic acid, or any combination thereof.

[0036] Suitable vinyl aromatic compounds having up to 20 carbon atoms include, but are not limited to, styrene, vinyltoluene, o-and p-methylstyrene, α-butylstyrene, 4-n-butylstyrene, 4-n-decylstyrene, halogenated styrenes, such as, for example, monochlorostyrenes, dichlorostyrenes, tribromostyrenes or tetrabromostyrenes. Styrene is preferred. Thus, in a preferred embodiment, the hard monomer is selected from styrene, methyl methacrylate, isobornyl methacrylate, cyclohexyl methacrylate or any combination thereof.

[0037] Examples of suitable hydroxyl C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylates include, but are not limited to, hydroxyethyl methacrylate, hydroxypropyl methacrylate, hydroxybutyl methacrylate, hydroxyethyl acrylate, hydroxypropyl acrylate, hydroxybutyl acrylate or any combination thereof. Preferably, the hydroxyl C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylate is selected from at least one of hydroxyethyl methacrylate, hydroxypropyl methacrylate and hydroxybutyl methacrylate. More preferably, the hydroxyl C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylate is selected from hydroxyethyl methacrylate.

[0038] The functional monomer A has the following formula:  wherein R is hydrogen or methyl and n is from 1 to 10, preferably from 2 to 5. In a preferred embodiment according to the present application, the functional monomer A is benzyl methacrylate and / or 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate, preferably 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate. The functional monomer A is present in an amount of 1-15 wt%, preferably in an amount of 2-12 wt%, relative to the total weight of the monomer mixture I and the monomer mixture II.

[0039] The inventors of the present application have innovatively provided an aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion, comprising an acrylic polymer formed by solution polymerization of a monomer mixture. During the preparation of the acrylic polymer, a special functional monomer with a long-chain benzene ring is used. The compound containing both allyl double bonds and polyether (EO) segments in the molecule is used as the functional monomer, which is polymerized with acrylate monomers. After polymerization, the acrylate prepolymer chain segments are grafted with non-ionic EO chain segments that play an emulsifying role, further enhancing the emulsifying ability of the hydroxyacrylic dispersion and ensuring the gloss of the resin under the condition of medium hydroxyl value.

[0040] In addition, the present application uses a reactive emulsifier to ensure the final stability, particle size of the dispersion and appropriate viscosity for use. In the prior art, in order to improve the gloss of the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion, styrene and gloss-enhancing monomers are usually introduced, but it is easy to make the hydrophobicity of the resin increase, which leads to a decrease in the stability of the dispersion when water is added, and the resulting dispersion obtained will have a larger particle size, poorer storage stability, and a correspondingly larger viscosity. The present application uses a reactive emulsifier, which can improve the dispersibility of the resin in water, and thus ensure that the particle size and viscosity of the dispersion are within a suitable range.

[0041] Reactive emulsifiers are monomers that introduce surface activity, usually monomers whose molecules themselves have surfactant characteristics, including allyl ether sulfonates, acrylamido sulfonates, maleic acid derivatives, sodium alkyl allylsuccinate sulfonate, and the like. In the embodiments according to the present application, the reactive emulsifier is preferably a nonionic emulsifier.

[0042] The aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion according to the present application is stable when stored at 50℃ for 30 days. In the present application, “storage stable” means that the dispersion does not delaminate after being placed at a certain temperature for a certain period of time.

[0043] The solution polymerization technology for preparing aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersions from the above-mentioned monomer mixture is diverse, including batch processes, continuous processes, and so on. It is well known that solution polymerization is a polymerization reaction that takes place in a solution state by dissolving monomers and free radical initiators in an appropriate solvent, allowing the product to be obtained directly in solution form. The solvent can act as a heat transfer medium, making the system’s heat transfer easier and the temperature more controllable; the system has a lower viscosity, reducing the gel effect and avoiding localized overheating; it is easy to adjust the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the product.

[0044] The method for preparing the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion according to the present application comprises the steps of: (1) mixing monomer mixture I with a solvent to obtain a first monomer mixture, mixing monomer mixture II with a solvent to obtain a second monomer mixture, mixing initiator A with a solvent to obtain a first initiator mixture, and mixing initiator B with a solvent to obtain a second initiator mixture; (2) adding the first monomer mixture and the first initiator mixture dropwise; (3) at the end of dropwise addition of the first initiator mixture, adding the second initiator mixture dropwise; at the end of dropwise addition of the first monomer mixture, adding the second monomer mixture dropwise to obtain a reaction solution; and (4) neutralizing the reaction solution and adding water to the resulting acrylic polymer to obtain the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion.

[0045] Usually, the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion obtained thereby has a solid content of 40-50%, preferably 43-48%, and more preferably 44-46%.

[0046] Any known thermal initiator can be used to initiate the polymerization reaction. Examples of useful thermal initiators include persulfates such as ammonium persulfate or alkali persulfate (including potassium, sodium or lithium) ; peroxides such as cumene hydroperoxide, tert-butyl hydroperoxide, di-tert-butyl peroxide, dioctyl peroxide, tert-butyl pervalerate, tert-butyl perisononate, tert-butyl peroctoate, tert-butyl perneodecanoate, peroxyl di (2-ethylhexyl) dicarbonate, bis (isotridecyl) peroxydicarbonate; azo compounds such as azobis (isobutyronitrile) and azobis (4-cyanovaleric acid) ; perborates and perphosphates.

[0048] In the initiator mixture formed by the initiator and the solvent, the weight ratio of the initiator to the solvent is 0.01-0.03: 1-5.

[0049] In a preferred embodiment of the present application, the initiator A and the initiator B are the same, and the weight ratio of the first initiator mixture to the second initiator mixture is 4: 0 to 6: 1.

[0050] According to the present application, the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion comprises an acrylic polymer obtained by solution polymerization of monomer mixture I, monomer mixture II and an initiator. The choice of solvent is very important for solution polymerization, although the solvent does not directly participate in the polymerization reaction, the solvent often has an inducing grading effect on the initiator, and the chain radicals have a chain transfer reaction with the solvent. Therefore, considering the molecular weight of the polymer, solvents with a smaller chain transfer constant are usually selected. In embodiments of the present application, the solvent is selected from one or more of 100#solvent oil, xylene, ethanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, cyclohexanone, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, 2, 2, 4-trimethyl-1, 3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate, ethylene glycol methyl ether, ethylene glycol ethyl ether, ethylene glycol butyl ether, propylene glycol methyl ether, propylene glycol ethyl ether, propylene glycol butyl ether, diethylene glycol methyl ether, diethylene glycol ethyl Ether, diethylene glycol butyl ether, dipropylene glycol methyl ether, dipropylene glycol ethyl ether, dipropylene glycol butyl ether, ethylene glycol methyl ether acetate, ethylene glycol ethyl ether acetate, ethylene glycol butyl ether acetate, propylene glycol methyl ether acetate, propylene glycol ethyl ether acetate and propylene glycol butyl ether acetate.

[0052] In the method according to the present application, before neutralizing the reaction solution in step (4) , the temperature of the reaction system is reduced to 85-105℃.

[0054] In the method according to the present application, the water added in step (4) is hot water at 90-95℃.

[0055] Reactive emulsifiers are monomers that introduce surface activity, usually monomers whose molecules themselves have surfactant characteristics, including allyl ether sulfonates, acrylamido sulfonates, maleic acid derivatives, sodium alkyl allylsuccinate sulfonate, and the like. In the embodiments according to the present application, the reactive emulsifier is preferably a nonionic emulsifier. Preferably, the reactive emulsifier is present in an amount of 0.5-5 weight%based on the total weight of the monomer mixture I and the monomer mixture II.

[0056] According to the present application, during the preparation of the aqueous dispersion, a redox initiation system is used for the further polymerization of the remaining monomer mixture, the redox initiation system comprising a second initiator, a reducing agent and optionally a metal catalyst.

[0057] Examples of the second initiator include, but not limited to one or more of peroxides, for example, hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxide, potassium peroxide, t-butyl hydroperoxide, t-amyl hydroperoxide, cumene hydroperoxide; persulfates, for example ammonium, potassium and sodium persulfates; perborates; and perphosphorate salts, preferably peroxides, more preferably hydrogen peroxide, t-butyl hydroperoxide, t-amyl hydroperoxide, and cumene hydroperoxide.

[0061] In another aspect, the present application provides method for preparing the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion suitable for formulating aqueous coating compositions, comprising the steps of: (1) mixing monomer mixture I with a solvent to obtain a first monomer mixture, mixing monomer mixture II with a solvent to obtain a second monomer mixture, mixing initiator A with a solvent to obtain a first initiator mixture, and mixing initiator B with a solvent to obtain a second initiator mixture; (2) adding the first monomer mixture and the first initiator mixture dropwise; (3) at the end of dropwise addition of the first initiator mixture, adding the second initiator mixture dropwise; at the end of dropwise addition of the first monomer mixture, adding the second monomer mixture dropwise to obtain a reaction solution; and (4) neutralizing the reaction solution and adding water to the resulting acrylic polymer to obtain the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion; the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion comprises an acrylic polymer  obtained by solution polymerization of monomer mixture I, monomer mixture II and an initiator; the monomer mixture I comprises, with respect to the total weight of the monomer mixture I, a) 15-45 wt%of the hard monomer; b) 15-35 wt%of the soft monomer; c) 10-25 wt%of the hydroxyl C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylate; d) 0-10 wt%of other functional monomers different from functional monomer A and  hydroxyl C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylate; and e) 2-15 wt%of the functional monomer A; the monomer mixture II comprises, with respect to the total weight of the monomer  mixture II, a) 5-15 wt%of the hard monomer; b) 5-25 wt%of the soft monomer; c) 20-50 wt%of the hydroxyl C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylate; d) 5-30 wt%of other functional monomers different from functional monomer A and the  hydroxyl C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylate; and f) 2-25 wt%of the reactive emulsifier; the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion comprises a dispersed phase  having a particle size in the range of 100 nm to 220 nm, preferably in the range of 110 nm to 190 nm; the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion has a viscosity in the range of 200- 4000 cps, preferably in the range of 200-2000 cps, and has a solid content in the range of 40-50%, preferably in the range of 43-48%, more preferably in the range of 44-46%; and the acrylic polymer has a weight average molecular weight in the range of 1000-25000  g / mol.

[0062] In the aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion prepared by the method according to the present application, the hydroxyl value of the acrylic polymer also affects, to a certain extent, the gloss of the aqueous coating composition.

[0064] Thus, according to another aspect of the present application, the present application further provides an aqueous coating composition comprising (i) an aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion according to the present  application; and (ii) optionally a curing agent, wherein a cured coating formed from the aqueous coating composition has a gloss of 80 or  higher at 20° and / or a gloss of 90 or higher at 60°.

[0104] The comparison between Examples 1-3 and Comparative Example 3 shows the influence of the addition and amount of benzyl methacrylate on gloss, particle size, and viscosity.

[0105] The comparison between Examples 4-6 and Comparative Example 3 shows the influence of the addition and amount of 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate on gloss, particle size, and viscosity.

[0106] The comparison between Example 1 and Comparative Example 7, as well as between Example 4 and Comparative Example 8, demonstrates the impact of the combination of functional monomer A and reactive emulsifier on the properties of the dispersion.

[0107] The inventors of the present application have innovatively provided an aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion, comprising an acrylic polymer formed by solution polymerization of a monomer mixture. The aqueous hydroxyacrylic resin secondary dispersion according to the present application is stable when stored at 50℃ for 30 days.

[0108] In addition, the present application uses a reactive emulsifier, which can improve the dispersibility of the resin in water, thus ensuring particle size and viscosity of the dispersion within an appropriate range.

[0109] All patents, patent applications and publications cited herein, as well as all disclosures of electronically available materials, are incorporated herein by reference. The foregoing detailed description and examples of the present application are only given for clear understanding. It cannot be understood as an unnecessary limitation. The application is not limited to the precise details shown and described, and variations obvious to those skilled in the art will be included in the application defined by the claims. In some embodiments, the present application illustratively disclosed herein can be implemented without any element not expressly disclosed herein.
