The RAN 225 may include one or more components described in connection with FIG. 1, such as one or more network nodes. However, the RAN 225 may not be limited to such components. The UPF 226 provides connection for data being transmitted over the RAN 225. The DN 226 identifies services from service providers, Internet access, and third party services, for example.
[0059] The AMF 212 processes connection and mobility tasks. The AUSF 211 receivesauthentication requests from the AMF 212 and interacts with UDM 217 to authenticate and validate network responses for determination of successful authentication. The SMF 213 conducts packet data unit (PDU) session management, as well as manages session context with the UPF 226.
[0060] The NSSF 214 may select a network slicing instance (NSI) and determine the allowednetwork slice selection assistance information (NSSAI). This selection and determination is utilized to set the AMF 212 to provide service to the UE 150. The NEF 215 secures access to network services for third parties to create specialized network services. The NRF 216 acts as a repository to store network functions to allow the functions to register with and discover each other.
[0061] The UDM 217 generates authentication vectors for use by the AUSF 211 and ADM212 and provides user identification handling. The UDM 217 may be connected to the UDR 224 which stores data associated with authentication, applications, or the like. The AF 218 provides application services to a user (e.g., streaming services, etc.). The PCF 219 provides policy control functionality. The ADRF 221 allows the storage, retrieval, and removal of data and analytics by consumers. The MDAF 222 provides additional data analytics services for network functions. The OAM 223 provides provisioning and management processing functions to manage elements in or connected to the network (e.g., UE 150, network nodes, etc.).
[0063] FIG. 2 is merely an example of components of a network system, and variations arecontemplated to be within the scope of the present disclosure. In embodiments, the network system may include other components not illustrated in FIG. 2. In embodiments, the network system may not include every component illustrated in FIG. 2. In embodiments, the components and connections may be implemented with different connections than those illustrated in FIG. 2. Such and other embodiments are contemplated to be within the scope of the present disclosure.
[0064] Although further detail will be provided below, a method is described herein, whichin various embodiments enables additional physical random access channel (PRACH resources)for network energy savings (NES) gains. In various embodiments, a cell may be operating underlow load (e.g., low PRACH load, low U-plane load) and is broadcasting a legacy PRACHconfiguration index that provides a relatively small PRACH capacity, (e.g. having few ROs).
[0065] In various embodiments, the cell broadcasts a configuration comprising at least oneadditional (e.g., second) PRACH resource associated with one legacy (e.g., first) PRACHresource (e.g., associated with the same PRACH configuration index of the legacy PRACHresource configuration), and which is contiguous in frequency domain and / or time domain to thelegacy PRACH resource. In various embodiments, a reference to a starting time may refer to anorthogonal frequency-division multiplexed (OFDM) symbol in which the RO starts or can referto the start of the timeslot in which the RO is contained.
[0066] In various embodiments, UEs may select an additional PRACH resource (orresources) instead of a legacy PRACH resource, based on network defined rules / configuration.
[0067] In various embodiments, methods described herein may provide for the PRACHcapacity to increase if PRACH load increases, based on need, and at the same time enabling theclustering in time of the UEs that access the network for improved network energy saving (e.g.,longer sleeping opportunities for the network are ensured).
[0068] As used herein, a communication with a radio access network (RAN) may refer toand mean a communication with a portion of a RAN, such as with a network node (e.g., a DU and / or a CU), or another portion of a RAN. As used herein, a communication with a core network may refer to and mean a communication with one or more services / applications of the core network, such as AMF or another service of a core network.
[0069] As used herein, the terms “first” and “second”, or the like, may refer to a first orsecond instance of a message being transmitted / received by a component (e.g., UE, apparatus, etc.), or a first or second component in a sequence of described components. As such, the terms are used in a non-limiting manner, and can refer to any message, operation, device, component, or the like.
[0070] FIG. 3 is a diagram of an example embodiment of PRACH resources 300, accordingto one illustrated aspect of the disclosure. The PRACH resources 300 include at least one first (primary) PRACH resources and at least one second (secondary) PRACH resources. In various embodiments, the first PRACH resources may include legacy PRACH resources and may be applicable to any UE, while the second PRACH resources may apply only to UEs capable of NES functionality (e.g., UEs compatible for 3GPP Release 19). In various embodiments, any UEmay encompass UEs capable of NES functionality and UEs not capable of the NES functionality(e.g., substantially all UEs of the system). Accordingly, described herein in some embodiments, UEs are capable of supporting PRACH resource adaptation e.g., by adaptively making aselection between using legacy PRACH resources or using the secondary PRACH resources for the random access.
[0071] As shown, in FIG. 3, the first resources and the second resources are provided in thetime and frequency domain as shown. Also shown in FIG. 3 is the RO periodicity.
[0072] The second PRACH resources may be provided along with their associated firstPRACH resources in a number of example embodiments. In one example embodiment, shown in310, the second (additional) PRACH resources may be provided using a same time instance andfrequency division multiplexed (FDMed) with first (legacy) resources, but using differentpreambles that identify the additional PRACH resources. In various embodiments, the first PRACH resources may have a first preamble identifier and the second PRACH resources may have a second preamble identifier.
[0073] In various embodiments, the first and second resources shown in 310 use the sametime and frequency resources of legacy PRACH resources but a different set of preambles. Accordingly, in various embodiments, this may incur close to zero energy cost increase formonitoring for the additional PRACH resources compared to a baseline (only legacy PRACHresources).
[0074] In various embodiments, the first and second resources may be provided as shown in320, where the additional PRACH resources are contiguous or directly adjacent in the frequencydomain. In various embodiments, the at least one additional PRACH resource uses the same timedomain resources of legacy PRACH resources but different frequency resources (e.g., is FDMedin one ‘legacy’ time instance). In various embodiments, this may incur close to zero energy cost increase for monitoring for the additional PRACH resources compared to the baseline (only legacy PRACH resources).
[0075] In various embodiments, the first and second resources may be provided as shown in330, where additional PRACH resources are provided contiguous in the frequency-domain andtime-domain. In various embodiments, there may be least one additional PRACH resource thatuses the same time domain resources of legacy PRACH resources but different frequencyresources, and there may be at least one additional PRACH resource that uses different timedomain resources of legacy PRACH resources (and same or different frequency resources). Invarious embodiments, frequency domain resources may be prioritized.
[0076] In various embodiments, the first and second resources may be provided as shown in340, where additional PRACH resources are contiguous or directly adjacent in the time-domainwith legacy PRACH resources.
[0077] To summarize, the legacy PRACH resources and the additional PRACH resourcesmay be provided as directly adjacent to one another and / or overlapping one another. The two types of PRACH resources may overlap in one of the time domain and frequency domain and be directly adjacent in the other of the time domain and frequency domain. In an embodiment, the two types of PRACH resources are directly adjacent in both time and frequency domain.
[0078] FIG. 4 is a diagram of an example embodiment of signals and operations among a celland a UE, according to one illustrated aspect of the disclosure. In various embodiments, thecomponents depicted in FIG. 4 may correspond to similar components described above in FIGS.1 and 2. It will be understood that a described signal may have associated operations and a described operation may have associated signals.
[0079] At operation 401, the UE may be in an RRC idle, RRC inactive, or RRC connectedmode.
[0080] At operation 402, the cell (e.g., network node managing the cell) transmits a systeminformation block (SIB) 1 to the UE and the UE receives the SIB1. In various embodiments, theSIB1 includes legacy PRACH configuration information, and further includes additionalPRACH configuration information defining at least one additional PRACH resource associatedwith a legacy PRACH resource in the frequency / preamble / time domain (e.g., as in 310, 320, 330,or 340 described above.
[0081] At operation 403, the UE stores the received SIB1.
[0082] At operation 404, if the RACH procedure is triggered, the UE selects an additionalPRACH resource using the stored SIB1.
[0083] At operation 405, the UE transmits a PRACH transmission to the cell by using theselected additional PRACH resource, and the cell receives the PRACH transmission.
[0084] At operation 406, RACH procedure continues.
[0085] As described above, the legacy PRACH configuration information may include atleast one PRACH resource applicable to any UEs and the additional PRACH configurationinformation may define PRACH resource(s) applicable only to UEs supporting physical resourceadaptation for initial access.
[0086] Further as described above, the additional PRACH resource(s) may be associatedwith the PRACH resources of the legacy PRACH configuration. In an embodiment, theadditional PRACH resources comprise at least a second PRACH resource that is frequency- division-multiplexed with the at least one first PRACH resource and a third PRACH resource time-division-multiplexed with the at least one first PRACH resource. The frequency-division multiplexing and time-division multiplexing may follow the meaning in the art. The second PRACH resource may be allocated to frequencies occupied by none of the PRACH resources of the legacy PRACH configuration so that a transmission on the second PRACH resource may be performed at least partially at the same time as a transmission on a legacy PRACH resource. Thethird PRACH resource may be allocated to a time interval occupied by none of the PRACHresources of the legacy PRACH configuration so that a transmission on the third PRACH resource may be performed at least partially on the same frequency / frequencies as a transmission on a legacy PRACH resource.
[0087] In various embodiments, a UE will use both the legacy PRACH configuration and theconfiguration of additional PRACH resources but may prefer an additional PRACH resource ifavailable. This configuration may be configured by the network. In various embodiments legacyUEs may be provided a larger PRACH capacity for them.
[0088] An embodiment combines the features of the previous two paragraphs. Accordingly, the additional PRACH resources may comprise at least one of a second PRACH resource that is frequency-division-multiplexed with the legacy PRACH resource(s), a third PRACH resource time-division-multiplexed with the legacy PRACH resource(s), or a fourth PRACH resource comprising at least one random access preamble comprised in none of the legacy PRACH resource(s). Additionally, the additional PRACH resources are assigned a higher priority than the legacy PRACH resource(s).
[0089] Let us then describe some embodiments of situations where the prioritization of theadditional PRACH resources over the legacy PRACH resources may be performed. In an embodiment, the UE determines to use the additional PRACH resource based on determining an uplink transmission is pending. Pending uplink transmission may be detected by the UE on thebasis of a non-empty uplink transmission buffer. As a consequence, the UE may trigger a RACHprocedure for connection setup / resume or for small-data transmission (SDT). In an embodiment the UE determines to use an additional PRACH resource based on determining the UE waspaged. The UE may determine to use the additional PRACH resource based on receiving paging downlink control information or a paging message comprising an information element indicating that the UE shall use the third PRACH resource. The paging can be based on the UE detecting itsUE identifier in a paging message. As a consequence, the UE may use the additional PRACHresources without a specific indication of the additional PRACH resources in the pagingmessage, but it may also depend on such a specific indication in the paging message or another message such as Paging Early Indication, paging DCI, or the System Information broadcast(system information block). The particular additional PRACH resource determined by the UEmay be dependent on the situation, e.g. the UE may determine to use a different additional PRACH when paged than when it has a pending uplink transmission.
[0090] In various embodiments, the specifications or network configuration described aboveat operation 402 may contain information on how to prioritize between additional PRACHresources in different domains if available. In various embodiments, relative priorities betweenthem may be indicated in the specifications (e.g., hard-coded) or configured at operation 402. Inone example, network configuration could include DRBs eligible to use additional PRACH resources and / or whether additional PRACH resources can be used for UL-triggered RACH only, for DL-triggered RACH only, or both.
[0091] The operations of FIG. 4 are merely illustrative, and variations are contemplated to bewithin the scope of the present disclosure. In embodiments, the operations may include other operations not illustrated in FIG. 4. In embodiments, the operations may not include every operation illustrated in FIG. 4. In embodiments, the operations may be implemented in a different order than that illustrated in FIG. 4. Such and other embodiments are contemplated to be within the scope of the present disclosure. Persons of skill in the art will appreciate that, although various example components are described as perform various functions, other components may perform those functions described in FIG.4.
[0092] In various embodiments, signaling may be in accordance with the table below, wherea parameter configuring a time offset expressed in number of slots or (positive or negative) number of symbols may also be provided to inform the UE that legacy and additional PRACH resources are separated by such time offset, when not adjacent. In one embodiment, 0 may be a candidate value for such time offset to express adjacency of legacy and additional PRACH resources.
[0093] When a UE is triggered to perform PRACH it will usually first identify the nextavailable time domain resource, then select a resource in the frequency domain within the time domain resource and then finally select a preamble to use in the selected time and frequency domain resources.
[0094] When a UE is triggered to perform PRACH it will utilize the first available (in time)resource. Therefore, a negative time offset for the additional PRACH resources relative to the legacy PRACH resources, will cause the UE to utilize the additional PRACH resources, because they appear earlier in time than the legacy PRACH resources due to the negative offset. Thus, the negative offset is useful to steer the UE to use the additional PRACH resource.
[0095] When the time offset is zero the UE will proceed with selecting a resource in thefrequency domain. If the legacy and additional PRACH resources are adjacent in the frequency domain, but in the same time domain resources, the UE can be configured to either prioritize (i.e. select) a resource in the additional PRACH resources or randomly select between the legacy and additional resource. If the legacy and additional PRACH resources are completely overlapping in the frequency and time domains, the UE will select a preamble. The UE can be configured to either prioritize (i.e. select) a preamble in the additional PRACH resources or randomly select between the legacy and additional resources.RACH-ConfigGeneric ::= SEQUENCE { prach-ConfigurationIndex INTEGER (0..255), prach-ConfigurationIndex INTEGER (0..255), msg1-FDM ENUMERATED {one, two, four, eight}, msg1-FrequencyStart INTEGER (0..maxNrofPhysicalResourceBlocks-1),… } … RACH-ConfigGeneric-Additional-r19 ::= SEQUENCE { msg1-FDM-Additional ENUMERATED {one, two, four, eight},msg1-FrequencyStart-Additional INTEGER (0..maxNrofPhysicalResourceBlocks-1 }Total number of preambles used for contention based and contention free 4-step or 2-step random access in the RACH resources defined in RACH-ConfigCommon, excluding preambles used for other purposes (e.g. for SI request). [0096] In accordance with the brief description, FIG. 5 is a flow diagram of an examplemethod 500 of transmitting PRACH resources, according to one illustrated aspect of thedisclosure. At block 510, a gNB transmits (or broadcasts) a PRACH configuration the includes the first PRACH resources described above to a UE. In various embodiments, the gNB broadcasts only legacy PRACH resources.
[0097] At block 520, the gNB determines whether an event is detected for transmitting thesecond PRACH resources (e.g., additional PRACH resources). If an event is not detected at block 520, then the method continues to loop to block 520.
[0098] If, at block 520, an event is detected for transmitting the second PRACH resources(e.g., there is an increased load on the PRACH resources), then the method proceeds to block 530, where the gNB transmits a PRACH configuration that includes the first PRACH resources and the second PRACH resources to the UE.
[0099] At block 540, the gNB monitors for detection of an event for returning to onlytransmitting the first PRACH resources. If an event is not detected at block 540, then the method continues to loop to block 540. If an event is detected at block 540 (e.g., there is a decreased load on PRACH resources), then the method proceeds to block 510.
