Description

USER EQUIPMENT, NETWORK NODES, AND METHODS THEREIN FOR ENHANCED NETWORK SELECTIONTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates to communication technology, and more particularly, to a User Equipment (UE) , network nodes, and methods therein for enhanced network selection.BACKGROUND

[0002] Edge Computing is a concept that enables services to be hosted close to the service consumers and provides benefits such as efficient service delivery with significant reduction in end-to-end latency and decreased load on the transport network. The benefits of Edge Computing will strengthen the promise of the 5th Generation (5G) and expand the prospects for several new and enhanced use cases -including virtual and augmented reality, Internet of Things (IoT) , Industrial IoT, autonomous driving, real-time multiplayer gaming etc.

[0003] In Release 17, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) aims to provide native support of Edge Computing in 3GPP networks. These efforts include initiatives across several working groups in 3GPP including Service and System Aspects (SA6) , SA2, SA3, SA4, and SA5, which cover application layer architecture, core network enhancement, security, media processing, and management aspects, respectively.

[0004] SA6 initiated normative specification work on an architecture for enabling Edge Applications (EDGEAPP) . The objective of the work is to define an enabling layer to facilitate communication between an Application Client (AC) running on a UE and an Edge Application Server (EAS) deployed on an Edge Data Network (EDN) . This includes aspects of service provisioning and EAS discovery. In addition, the work aims to provide support services such as application context transfer between EASs for service continuity, service enablement and capability exposure Application Programing Interfaces (APIs) towards the EAS.

[0005] Fig. 1 shows an architecture for enabling edge applications. Some of the functional entities will be introduced below:

[0006] ● Edge Enabler Server (EES) : EES provides supporting functions needed for EASs and EEC, e.g., EEC registration, EAS discovery and network APIs for EAS and service continuity support.

[0007] ● Edge Enabler Client (EEC) : EEC provides supporting functions needed for AC (s) , e.g., retrieval and provisioning of configuration information to enable application data traffic, and EAS discovery.

[0008] ● Edge Configuration Server (ECS) : ECS provides supporting functions needed for the EEC to connect with an EES, e.g., provisioning of Edge configuration information to the EEC, and EES discovery.

[0009] ● Application Client (AC) : AC is the application resident in the UE performing the client function.

[0010] ● Edge Application Server (EAS) : EAS is the application server resident in the EDN, performing the server functions. The AC connects to the EAS in order to avail the services of the application with the benefits of Edge Computing.

[0011] For further details of the functions entities and reference points  / interfaces shown in Fig. 1, reference can be made to the 3GPP Technical Specification (TS) 23.558, V19.1.0, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.SUMMARY

[0012] According to clause 8.3.3.2.2 of TS 23.558, in a service provisioning procedure, an ECS identifies EESs (or EDNs) based on a location of a UE. One location may be served by more than one EES. As a result, the ECS returns a list of EESs to the UE, and the UE needs to choose one EES from the list. However, the UE may not have enough information to select the EES (or EDN) which has the shortest data path for application data traffic.

[0013] Figs. 2A, 2B, and 2C show exemplary scenarios of EES (or EDN) selection by a UE. In each of these scenarios, the UE is located in an overlapping area of two EDNs, EDN#1 and EDN#2. User Plane Function (UPF) #1 serves EDN#1 and has the shortest data path with EDN#1. Similarly, UPF#2 serves EDN#2 and has the shortest data path with EDN#2.

[0014] In the scenario shown in Fig. 2A, EAS#1 serves DNAI#1 only and EAS#2 serves DNAI#2 only. It is assumed here that traffic influence is not supported by the 5G Core (5GC) .

[0015] At Step 1, the UE performs service provisioning with the ECS based on its location, and gets EDN#1 and EDN#2 from the ECS. The UE selects EDN#1 (or EES#1) for edge computing. Then, the UE initiates Packet Data Unit (PDU) Session Establishment, and UPF#2 is selected for the PDU session. Accordingly, the UE's edge traffic (application data traffic) is anchored at UPF#2. As the UE has selected EDN#1, it performs EAS discovery towards EES#1 and EES#1 returns EAS#1. At Step 3, the UE connects to EAS#1 and the edge traffic goes through UPF#2. This data path is not the shortest data path in this case.

[0016] In the scenario shown in Fig. 2B, EAS#1 serves DNAI#1 only and EAS#2 serves DNAI#2 only. It is assumed here that traffic influence is supported by the 5GC and UPF#1 is not in service, e.g., due to maintenance, overload, or failure.

[0017] At Step 1, the UE performs service provisioning with the ECS based on its location, and gets EDN#1 and EDN#2 from the ECS. As traffic influence is supported, at Step 4, EAS#1 invokes traffic influence towards a Network Exposure Function (NEF) for changing the user plane of the UE from dnai#2 to dnai#1 (i.e., from UPF#2 to UPF#1) . However, the traffic influence fails since UPF#1 is not in service.

[0018] In the scenario shown in Fig. 2C, EAS#1 and EAS#2 both serve DNAI#1.

[0019] At Step 1, the UE performs service provisioning with the ECS based on its location, and gets EDN#1 and EDN#2 from the ECS.

[0020] In all of the above three scenarios, the UE selects an EDN that doesn't have the shortest path for data traffic. Even iftraffic influence is supported, the NEF traffic influence service needs to be invoked to change the anchoring UPF. This means that the user experience is not optimal e.g., in terms of delay, and extra cost is required for invoking the traffic influence service.

[0021] It is an object of the present disclosure to provide a UE, network nodes, and methods therein, capable of solving or at least mitigating at least one of the above problems.

[0057] Fig. 3 is a flowchart illustrating a method 300 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The method 300 can be performed by an ECS.

[0058] At block 310, the ECS transmits, to a UE (particularly to an EEC in the UE via EDGE-4, referring to Fig. 1) , configuration information of an EDN that is topologically closest to a UPF predicted to be used by the UE for EDN access. Here, the UE may be a Vertical Application Layer (VAL) UE. The UPF is also referred to as “anchoring UPF” in this context.

[0059] Here, an EDN being topologically closest to the UPF may mean that an EES or EAS associated with the EDN is topologically closest to the UPF, and thus the EDN or the EAS has the shortest data path with the UPF.

[0060] In an example, the configuration information of the EDN may include identification information of an EES and / or EAS in the EDN. For example, the identification information of the EES may be an endpoint of the EES, and / or the identification information of the EAS may be an endpoint of the EAS.

[0061] In the block 310, the configuration information may be transmitted in a service provisioning response.

[0062] In an example, e.g., before the block 310, the ECS may transmit, to a data analytics server, a request for prediction based on network connectivity analytics. The request may contain a location of the UE and information of the UE for accessing the ECS. In particular, the information of the UE for accessing the ECS may include at least one of: a DNN used by the UE, information of a network slice (e.g., Single Network Slice Selection Assistance Information (S-NSSAI) , Network Slice Instance Identifier (NSI ID) , or External Network Slice Information (ENSI) ) used by the UE, and an IP address of the UE. Then, the ECS may receive, from the data analytics server, a response containing an analytics result from which the UPF is derivable. In particular, the analytics result may include a DNAI, and may additionally include an identifier of the UPF (which may be e.g., an UPF instance ID, UPF instance name, an IP address of the UPF instance, or geographical information of the UPF instance, all referred to as UPF identifier or UPF ID in this context) or N6 traffic routing information of the UPF.

[0063] Here, the request may be referred to as “application session network connectivity prediction request” and contain Information Elements (IEs) shown in Table 1 below, and the response may be referred to as “application session network connectivity prediction response” and contain IEs shown in Table 2 below.

[0064] Table 1 -Application Session Network Connectivity Prediction Request

[0065] Table 2 -Application Session Network Connectivity Prediction Response

[0066] As an example, the data analytics server may be an Application Data Analytics Enablement, ADAE, server or a Network Data Analysis Function, NWDAF. In particular, the ADAE server is a feature that allows for network automation and intelligence. It can process data related to service events and network status to provide analytics reports. Application data analytics can also help improve the analytics provided by an NWDAF, which uses application data for some analytics services. For further details of the ADAE server, reference can be made to the 3GPP TS 23.436, V19.0.0, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.

[0067] Fig. 4 shows an architecture for enabling edge applications according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Compared with the architecture shown in Fig. 1, a new interface  / reference point, ADAE-S, is provided between the ECS and the ADAE server.

[0068] Fig. 5 shows a request-response process of ADAE analytics for application session network connectivity. At Step 1, a consumer, which may be an ECS in this case, requests an ADAE server for application session's network connectivity analytics. The request includes a UE location, a DNN, network slice info (e.g., S-NSSAI) and a UE IP address (see Table 1) . At Step 2, the ADAE server returns an analytics result to the consumer based on available information obtained during a subscribe-notify procedure (which will be described later) . The analytics result includes a DNAI, an UPF identifier (e.g., UPF instance information) , N6 traffic routing information, and a confidence level (see Table 2) .

[0069] Accordingly, the ECS may determine the EDN based on the DNAI, and optionally based further on the identifier of the UPF or the N6 traffic routing information.

[0070] In an example, the ECS may receive from an EES associated with the EDN, EES location information (e.g., data center ID) , and the EDN may be determined by mapping the DNAI, and optionally the identifier of the UPF or the N6 traffic routing information, to the EES location information. Some examples of such mapping are given in Table 3 below.

[0071] Table 3 -Mapping to EES location information

[0072] In Table 3, a DNAI, or a combination of a DNAI and a UPF instance ID or N6 traffic routing information, corresponds to a data center ID (each DNAI may be served by one or more UPFs) . The ECS has the mapping from DNAIs (and optionally UPF instance IDs or N6 traffic routing information) to Data Center IDS. Here, the N6 traffic routing information can e.g., correspond to an identifier of a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or to explicit tunneling information such as a tunneling protocol identifier together with a tunnel identifier (referring to the 3GPP TS 23.501, V18.5.0, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety) . For example, the ECS may map (DNAI1, UPF1) to DC1-1, and determine the EES (and accordingly its associated EDN) corresponding to DC1-1. In another example, the ECS may map DNAI2 to DC2, and determine the EES (and accordingly its associated EDN) corresponding to DC2. In yet another example, the ECS may map (DNAI4, N6_traffic_routing_info_3) to DC4-3, and determine the EES (and accordingly its associated EDN) corresponding to DC4-3.

[0073] The above EES location information may be received by the ECS in e.g., an EES registration process. Fig. 6 shows a process of EES registration. As shown, at Step 1, an EES sends an EES registration request to an ECS. The EES registration request includes an EES profile containing, among others, an EES ID and EES location information (e.g., dataCenter_info, which may include a data center ID) . At Step 2, the ECS stores the EES registration information, e.g., stores the EES location information in association with the EES. At Step 3, the ECS returns an EES registration response.

[0074] Fig. 7 is a flowchart illustrating a method 700 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The method 700 can be performed by an NF consumer, which may be an ECS. At block 710, the NF consumer transmits, to a data analytics server (e.g., ADAE server or NWDAF, as described above) , a subscription request for network connectivity analytics, the request containing an analytics ID for UPF prediction and an indication of one or more target UEs. Here, the request may be referred to as “application session network connectivity analytics subscription request” and contain IEs shown in Table 4 below. Accordingly, the NF consumer may then receive, from the data analytics server, an application session network connectivity analytics subscription response, which contain IEs shown in Table 5 below.

[0075] Table 4 -Application session network connectivity analytics subscription request

[0076] Table 5 -Application session network connectivity analytics subscription response

[0077] At block 720, the NF consumer receives, from the data analytics server, a notification containing network connectivity analytics for the one or more target UEs, the analytics including DNAIs, UPF identifiers, and / or N6 traffic routing information.

[0078] Here, the notification may be referred to as “application session network connectivity analytics notification” and contain IEs shown in Table 6 below.

[0079] Table 6 -Application session network connectivity analytics notification

[0080] The analytics output in Table 6 may include UE locations, UE IDs, IP addresses, request time of PDU session establishment, DNNs, network slice information, DNAIs, UPF identifiers, and / or N6 traffic routing information.

[0081] Fig. 8 is a flowchart illustrating a method 800 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The method 800 can be performed by a data analytics server, which may be e.g., an ADAE server or NWDAF, as described above.

[0082] At block 810, the data analytics server receives, from an NF consumer (e.g., an ECS) , a request for prediction based on network connectivity analytics, the request containing a location of a UE and information of the UE for accessing the NF consumer.

[0083] In an example, the information of the UE for accessing the NF consumer may include at least one of: a DNN used by the UE, information of a network slice (e.g., S-NSSAI, NSI ID, or ENSI) used by the UE, and an IP address of the UE.

[0084] At block 820, the data analytics server transmits, to the NF consumer, a response containing an analytics result from which a UPF predicted to be used by the UE for EDN access is derivable.

[0085] In an example, the analytics result may include a DNAI, and may additionally include an identifier of the UPF or N6 traffic routing information of the UPF.

[0086] Here, the request may be “application session network connectivity prediction request” and the response may be referred to as “application session network connectivity prediction response” . For further details, reference can be made to Table 1, Table 2, and Fig. 5.

[0087] Fig. 9 is a flowchart illustrating a method 900 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The method 900 can be performed by a data analytics server, which may be e.g., an ADAE server or NWDAF, as described above.

[0088] At block 910, the data analytics server receives, from an NF consumer (e.g., an ECS) , a subscription request for network connectivity analytics, the request containing an analytics ID for UPF prediction and an indication of one or more target UEs.

[0089] Here, the request may be “application session network connectivity analytics subscription request” shown in Table 4 above. The indication of the target UEs may include an indication of a range of target UEs, e.g., a network slice, a DNN, or a geographical area, as shown in Table 4. Then, the data analytics server may transmit an application session network connectivity analytics subscription response, as shown in Table 5 above, to the NF consumer.

[0090] At block 920, the data analytics server transmits, to the NF consumer, a notification containing network connectivity analytics for the one or more target UEs, the analytics including DNAIs, UPF identifiers, and / or N6 traffic routing information.

[0091] Here, the notification may be “application session network connectivity analytics notification” shown in Table 6 above.

[0092] In an example, e.g., after the block 910, the data analytics server may transmit, to the one or more target UEs and one or more core network nodes (e.g., NEF and / or SMF) and / or to an analytics and data repository function (e.g., Application layer -Analytics and Data Repository Function, or A-ADRF) , a data subscription request containing the analytics ID for UPF prediction and IDs and / or IP addresses of the one or more target UEs. Then, the data analytics server may receive data notifications from the one or more target UEs and the one or more core network nodes and / or from the analytics and data repository function. For example, the data notifications may contain following data associated with the one or more target UEs: UE location, UE ID, IP address, request time of session establishment, DNN, network slice information, DNAI, UPF identifier, and / or N6 traffic routing information. In an example, the data notifications may contain IEs shown in Table 7 below.

[0093] Table 7 -Data notification

[0094] For example, some types of data and their sources are listed in Table 8 below.

[0095] Table 8 -Data source

[0096] In an example, the data analytics server may generate the network connectivity analytics based on the data collected from at least one data source shown in Table 8 which can be carried in data notifications shown in Table 7.

[0097] In an example, the data analytics server may further correlate the data in the data notifications, and predict an UPF to be used by at least one of the one or more target UEs based on the correlated data using AI or ML.

[0098] Fig. 10 shows a subscribe-notify procedure of ADAE analytics for application session network connectivity. As shown, the procedure includes the following steps.

[0099] 1. A consumer (e.g., ECS) of an ADAE Server (ADAES) analytics service sends an application session connectivity subscription request to an ADAES. The consumer may indicate the target UEs or group of UEs applicable for data collection.

[0100] 2. The ADAES sends a subscription response as a positive or negative acknowledgement to the consumer of the analytics service.

[0101] 3. The ADAES maps the analytics event ID to a list of data collection event identifiers, and a list of data producer IDs. Such mapping may be preconfigured by Operation Administration and Maintenance (OAM) or may be determined by the ADAES based on the analytics event type  / vertical type and / or data producer profile.

[0102] 4. The ADAES sends a data collection subscription request to the Data Producers or the A-DCCF with the respective Data Collection Event ID and the requirement for data collection. Such data producers include the A-ADRF, the Core Network Functions (such as SMF / NEF / NWDAF) and the UEs. The ADAES can use NEF / SMF event exposure service to know user plane path change (e.g. DNAI, N6 traffic routing info) , PDU session status (e.g. UE IP address) , user plane status (e.g. active / inactive) and UPF information, and NEF / NWDAF analytics exposure to know UE communications, Data Network (DN) performance and application service experience.

[0103] 5. The Data Producer (s) sends a subscription response as a positive or negative acknowledgement to the ADAES.

[0104] 6. The ADAES, based on subscription, may receive offline stats / data from A-ADRF on the anchoring UPF prediction based on the analytics / data collection event ID.

[0105] 7. The UE establishes a PDU session and application session is started.

[0106] 8. The ADAES may receive data from the ADAE Client of the UE, such as: UE ID, UE IP address, the timestamp when the PDU session is established, and the location where the PDU session is established.

[0107] 9. The Core Network (CN) (such as SMF / NEF / NWDAF) sends the real-time data to the ADAES, where the data correspond to the data collection ID or the analytics event ID for which the ADAES subscribed, such as: UE ID, DNN, network slice info (e.g. S-NSSAI) , DNAI, UPF instance information, and N6 traffic routing information.

[0108] 10. The ADAES abstracts or correlates the data based on the analytics event and the data collection configuration. Such correlation can base on UE ID, UE IP address and timestamp.

[0109] 11. The ADAES sends the analytics to the consumer, where these analytics include the application session's network connectivity (e.g. DNAI, UPF instance info, N6 traffic routing info) for a location area and time horizon, including also the confidence level.

[0110] Fig. 11 is a flowchart illustrating a method 1100 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The method 1100 can be performed by a UE, e.g., a VALUE.

[0111] At block 1110, the UE (particularly an EEC in the UE) transmits, to an ECS, a service provisioning request.

[0112] At block 1120, the UE (particularly an EEC in the UE) receives, from the ECS, a service provisioning response containing configuration information of an EDN that is topologically closest to a UPF predicted to be used by the UE for EDN access.

[0113] In an example, the configuration information of the EDN may include identification information of an EES and / or EAS in the EDN. For example, the identification information of the EES may be an endpoint of the EES, and / or the identification information of the EAS may be an endpoint of the EAS.

[0114] Fig. 12A shows a process of service provisioning according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown, at Step 1, an EEC sends a service provisioning request to an ECS. At Step 2, the ECS process the request. In particular, the ECS utilizes the ADAE service as described above in connection with Fig. 5 and Fig. 10 to get prediction information about DNAI, UPF instance information and N6 traffic routing information. The ECS further identifies an EES based on the predicted DNAI and EES registered DNAI, considering which EES is topologically close to the predicted UPF instance information and / or N6 routing information. If the EES has registered EES location information (e.g. civic address, Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates, or data center ID) into the ECS and the ECS can map the ADAE predicted information to the EES location information, then the ECS can identify the EES according to predicted application session's network connectivity, ECS local configuration and the EES location information in the EES registration information. At Step 3, the ECS returns a service provisioning response to the EEC, including information on the identified EES.

[0115] Fig. 12B shows a process of service provisioning according to another embodiment of the present disclosure. It is assumed that session breakout connectivity model is used in the 5GC for edge computing. As shown, the process includes the following steps.

[0116] 1. An EEC on a UE performs service provisioning request towards an ECS.
