Description

[0001] AN ADJUSTABLE POWER TOWER APPARATUS FOR MUSCLE STRENGTH TRAINING

[0002] Field of Invention

[0003] [1] The present disclosure relates to the field of fitness equipment. Specifically, it pertains to an adjustable power tower apparatus with adjustable construction for muscle strength training that is portable and yet provides better stability to a user while performing exercises.

[0004] Background

[0005] [2] The background description includes information that may be useful in understanding the present invention. It is not an admission that any of the information provided herein is prior art or relevant to the presently claimed invention, or that any publication specifically or implicitly referenced is prior art.

[0006] [3] A power tower, also referred to as a pull-up and dip station, is a versatile piece of fitness equipment that allows a user / trainee to perform a wide variety of calisthenics exercises, mainly targeting muscles. The power tower can be used to perform exercises such as pull-ups, leg raises, chin-ups, dips, knee raises, push-ups, vertical knee raises, horizontal knee raises, and many more. As the power tower provides a wide variety of exercises targeting different muscle groups, the power tower offers a convenient and effective way to achieve body fitness.

[0007] [4] Traditional power towers pose challenges due to their large and bulky nature, demanding considerable storage space and rendering them impractical for users with limited home or apartment space. Additionally, their hefty size and weight make traditional power towers and dip bars difficult to transport, hindering users who wish to work out while traveling or relocate their equipment. This lack of portability presents significant obstacles for individuals seeking convenient and versatile fitness solutions. [5] Existing power towers generally have a fixed base. Some of the power towers have a broader base. For a user with narrower shoulders, the wider gap between the base structures can be uncomfortable during exercises, potentially leading to strain in the shoulder area. This discomfort may discourage consistent use of the power towers, hinder workout effectiveness, and in the worst case may even cause a shoulder injury to the user. Additionally, the broader base may require more floor space, limiting the placement options for the power tower, especially in smaller home and gym setups. While some existing power towers have too narrow of a base. The narrow base restricts range of motions during performing exercises, thereby making it difficult to achieve full extension or proper form, especially for the user with broader shoulders. Further, the user may accidentally collide with the towers during movement of legs such as side leg raises, flutter kicks, bicycle kicks, and the like.

[0008] [6] Additionally, due to the limited design and portability of existing towers, the user is unable to be more adaptive in the exercise protocols. For example, due the bulkiness of existing designs, the user may be unable to attach himself to a pulley or resistance cables and cannot otherwise kick laterally while performing certain exercises.

[0009] Summary

[0010] [7] There is, therefore, a need to overcome the drawbacks of conventional power towers by providing an adjustable power tower apparatus that provides better stability to a user while performing exercises.

[0011] [8] It is an objective of the present disclosure to provide a portable power tower apparatus that occupies minimal space when packed and being transported.

[0012] [9] It is another objective of the present disclosure to provide a power tower that is of modular construction, and thus requires fewer parts, making it cost effective to manufacture.

[0010] It is another objective of the present disclosure to provide a power tower that incorporates adjustments to meet differing requirements of different users.

[0013]

[0011] It is yet another objective of the present disclosure to provide power tower apparatus that can be easily stacked and stored when not in use or being transported.

[0014]

[0012] In an aspect, the present disclosure provides a portable and adjustable power tower apparatus that can be implemented for muscle strength training by performing various exercises, in some embodiments without need of any additional components to be added.

[0015]

[0013] According to an embodiment, an adjustable power tower apparatus includes a pair of identical towers such that when the two towers are placed side by side, the two towers together provide a configuration for performing multiple different exercises, without need of any additional components to be added.

[0016]

[0014] In an embodiment, each tower includes a support member configured over a pair of identical base members. The base members may be configured to provide a broad and adjustable support base to ensure stability during exercising. Specifically, the two base members may be oriented orthogonally to the support member to provide a broad support base to ensure stability during exercising.

[0017]

[0015] In an advantageous aspect, the proposed power tower apparatus based on two independent and similar or identical towers may include a feature that allows the two towers to be placed adjacent to each other with overlap in their base members, which ensures the broad support at the base without any compromise on separation between them to meet different shoulder width requirements, and also ensures stability throughout the apparatus during use.

[0016] In an embodiment, a pair of identical towers can be placed adjacent to each other such that the support members of the two towers are positioned parallel or at least substantially parallel to one another for performing exercises. In another embodiment, the base members include features such that, when two identical towers are placed adjacent to each other with overlap, the support members of the two towers are longitudinally aligned, or at least substantially longitudinally aligned, preferably without any offset. Horizontally oriented portions of the support members of the two towers may be parallel or at least substantially parallel to the floor as well as parallel or at least substantially parallel to each other to function as shoulder pads for exercising.

[0018]

[0017] In an embodiment, each pair of identical base members includes a vertical member and a horizontal member. The vertical member may be fixed to the horizontal member at or near a midpoint of the horizontal member. The horizontal member may have a profile that includes a first lateral portion located on one side of the vertical member, and a second lateral portion located on the other side of the vertical member, and a connecting portion connecting the first and second lateral portions such that the vertical member is fixed to the connecting portion. The first and second lateral portions are parallel to each other with an offset therebetween, and the connecting portion can be slanted relative to the first and second lateral portion.

[0019]

[0018] In an embodiment, when two towers, such as a first tower and a second tower, are placed adjacent to each other, the offset between the first lateral portion and second lateral portions may allow the first lateral portions of a first tower to be placed parallel or at least substantially parallel to the second lateral portions of the second tower in an overlapping configuration, preferably without loss of alignment between the support members of the two towers.

[0019] In an embodiment, the support member can have a generally inverted U-shape having a pair of vertical posts, and a transverse post connecting the two vertical posts at an upper end of the two vertical posts.

[0020]

[0020] In an embodiment, the pair of base members of a tower can be slidably coupled to the two vertical posts of the corresponding support member. Slidable engagement allows the height of the tower to be adjusted to meet the requirement of the user. There can be a locking arrangement to lock the support member to the corresponding base members at the adjusted height.

[0021]

[0021] In an embodiment, the slidable coupling between the pair of vertical posts of the support member and the vertical member of the base member can be based on a telescopic arrangement, where the vertical member of the base member is received within an inner hollow portion of the corresponding vertical post of the support member.

[0022]

[0022] In an embodiment, the locking arrangement can include a series of holes, such as a series of equally spaced holes in some embodiments, in the vertical member of the base members along a length of the vertical member. One or more retractable pins may be provided with the vertical posts of the support member such that the pin(s) is configured to engage with a selected hole of the vertical member of the base members to inhibit or prevent sliding movement between the two.

[0023]

[0023] In an embodiment, the support member can include an adjustable elbow pad secured over the transverse post, in some cases using one or more connecting plates. The one or more connecting plates can be movably fixed over the transverse post. The adjustable elbow pad can provide support to an elbow of the user while performing exercises and may be configured to reduce pressure on the shoulder and the elbow. In some embodiments, the adjustable elbow pad can be adjusted in a forward and a backward direction, depending on the type of exercise to be performed.

[0024] In an embodiment, the support member can include a vertically oriented gripping handle configured over the transverse post configured at the end of the elbow pad. The gripping handle enables the user to maintain balance and positioning by holding the gripping handle, while performing exercises.

[0024]

[0025] In an embodiment, the adjustable power tower apparatus can further include a foot pad configured with the base portion of the towers. The foot pad can function as an additional third anchor point, in addition to the two arms, for a user to place his foot for assistance and leverage to lift his body in mid-air in various motions and directions and provides greater leverage and stability to the user.

[0025]

[0026] As can be appreciated, in some embodiments, the design of the base member can facilitate adjusting the width of the power tower apparatus according to the shoulder width of the user, in some cases without need of additional / special tools.

[0031] The following is a detailed description of embodiments of the disclosure depicted in the accompanying drawings. The embodiments are in such detail as to clearly communicate the disclosure. However, the amount of detail offered is not intended to limit the anticipated variations of embodiments; on the contrary, the intention is to cover all modifications, equivalents, and alternatives falling within the spirit and scope of the present disclosure as defined by the appended claims.

[0032]

[0032] Each of the appended claims defines a separate invention, which for infringement purposes is recognized as including equivalents to the various elements or limitations specified in the claims. Depending on the context, all references below to the "invention" may in some cases refer to certain specific embodiments only. In other cases, it will be recognized that references to the "invention" will refer to subject matter recited in one or more, but not necessarily all, of the claims. As used in the description herein and throughout the claims that follow, the meaning of "a," "an," and "the" includes plural reference unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. Also, as used in the description herein, the meaning of "in" includes "in" and "on" unless the context clearly dictates otherwise.

[0033]

[0033] All methods described herein can be performed in any suitable order unless otherwise indicated herein or otherwise clearly contradicted by context. The use of any and all examples, or exemplary language (e.g., "such as") provided with respect to certain embodiments herein is intended merely to better illuminate the invention and does not pose a limitation on the scope of the invention otherwise claimed. No language in the specification should be construed as indicating any non-claimed element essential to the practice of the invention.

[0034]

[0034] As used herein, the term "substantially" refers to the complete or nearly complete extent or degree of an action, characteristic, property, state, structure, item, or result to function as indicated. For example, an object that is "substantially" cylindrical or "substantially" perpendicular would mean that the object / feature is either cylindrical / perpendicular or nearly cylindrical / perpendicular so as to result in the same or nearly the same function. The exact allowable degree of deviation provided by this term may depend on the specific context. The use of "substantially" is equally applicable when used in a negative connotation to refer to the complete or near complete lack of an action, characteristic, property, state, structure, item, or result. For example, a structure which is "substantially free of" a bottom would either completely lack a bottom or so nearly completely lack a bottom that the effect would be effectively the same as if it completely lacked a bottom.

[0035]

[0035] Similarly, as used herein, the term "about" is used to provide flexibility to a numerical range endpoint by providing that a given value may be "a little above" or "a little below" the endpoint while still accomplishing the function associated with the range.

[0036]

[0036] Various terms are used herein. To the extent a term used in a claim is not defined, it should be given the broadest definition persons in the pertinent art have given that term as reflected in printed publications and issued patents at the time of filing.

[0037]

[0037] Traditional power towers tend to be large and bulky, requiring a significant amount of space for storage and use. This can be impractical for users / trainees with limited space in their homes or apartments. Further, due to the large size and weight of the traditional power towers and dip bars, the traditional power towers are not easily portable. Thus, the users who want to work out while traveling or who need to move the equipment from one location on the gym floor to another location, for instance to combine the use of the tower with a pulley machine or a resistance cable, may face challenges.

[0038]

[0038] In addition, many traditional power towers and dip bars have fixed dimensions and configurations, which may not be suitable for all users. For instance, when using towers with a base that is too wide, the user places excessive stress on the shoulder joint due to increased mechanical load and improper joint alignment. The shoulder joint is a ball-and-socket structure that relies on a precise range of motion and the stabilization provided by the rotator cuff muscles. A wider grip increases the distance between the shoulder joint and the hands, lengthening the lever arm and amplifying the torque exerted on the joint. This increased torque demands more from the stabilizing muscles, which can lead to overuse injuries or strains.

[0039]

[0039] Moreover, shoulder width varies among individuals. Towers with a wide base force those with narrower shoulders into unnatural positions, causing improper joint alignment. This misalignment can result in impingement, where the rotator cuff tendons get pinched, leading to pain and potential injury. Additionally, a wider grip changes the upper arm's angle relative to the torso, limiting the natural range of motion and redistributing stress inappropriately across the shoulder joint and the acromioclavicular (AC) joint. This redistribution can cause discomfort and increase the risk of injury to the user.

[0040]

[0040] The proposed power tower apparatus offers an innovative solution to the challenges posed by traditional power towers or dip bars by providing adjustable and stackable design of the power tower apparatus suitable for home use and easier mobility in and around the gym floor or workout area. Further, the proposed power tower apparatus incorporates several adjustable features, such as base adjustment, height adjustment, elbow pads, and / or handle grips adjustments of the proposed power tower to accommodate users of varying body types and sizes, including those with narrower shoulders.

[0041]

[0041] Referring now to FIGs. 1A to 10, where exemplary views of the proposed modular, adjustable, and portable power tower apparatus 100 are disclosed, the power tower apparatus 100 includes a pair of identical or at least substantially identical towers, such as a first tower 102-1 and a second tower 102-2 (individually and collectively referred to as tower / towers 102, herein) placed side by side, adjacent to each other. Each tower 102 includes a base member, such as base members 200-1A and 200-1B of the first tower 102-1, and the base members 200-2A and 200-2B of the second tower 102-2 (individually and collectively referred to as base member / base members 200, herein), and a support member, such as support member 300-1 of the first tower 102-1 and the support member 300-2 of the second tower 102-2 (individually and collectively referred to as support member / support members 300, herein).

[0042]

[0042] As can be seen from FIGs. 1A and 1C, the two base members 200 of the towers 102 are oriented orthogonally to the support member 300 to provide a broad support base to ensure stability during exercising. Further, construction of the base members 200 of the two towers 102 allows the two towers to be placed adjacent to each other with overlap in their base members 200, which ensures the broad support at the base without any compromise on separation between them to meet different shoulder width requirements. Thus, the two towers 102 are configured to be capable of being brought close to each other to meet a low shoulder width requirement.

[0043]

[0043] As can be further seen from FIGs. 1A and 1C, the pair of identical towers 102 can be placed adjacent to each other such that the support members 300 of the two towers 102 are parallel or at least substantially parallel to each other for performing exercises. In another embodiment, the base members 200 include features such that when two identical towers are placed adjacent to each other with overlap, the support members 300 of the two towers 102 are longitudinally aligned, or at least substantially longitudinally aligned, without any or with only mi nimal / negligible offset, as evident from FIG. 1C.

[0044]

[0044] Referring to FIGs. 2A to 2C, each of the two identical base members 200 of the towers 102 can include a vertical member 204 and a horizontal member 202. The vertical member 204 can be fixed to the horizontal member 202 at or near a midpoint of the horizontal member 202. The horizontal member 202 has profile that includes a first lateral portion 202A located on a one side of the vertical member 204, a second lateral portion 202B located on the other side of the vertical member 204, and a connecting portion 202C connecting the first lateral portion 202A and the second lateral portion 202B. The vertical member can be fixed to the connecting portion 202C. The first and second lateral portions 202A and 202B are parallel to each other with an offset therebetween, marked as L in FIG. 2C. The connecting portion 202C can be angled relative to the first and second lateral portions 202A and 202B to provide the aforementioned offset.

[0045]

[0045] Referring back to FIGs. 1A to 1C, when two towers 102, such as a first tower 102-1 and a second tower 102-2, are placed adjacent to each other, the offset L between the first lateral portion 202A and second lateral portion 202B allows the first lateral portions 202A of the base members 200 of the first tower 102-1 to be placed parallel or at least substantially parallel to the second lateral portions 202B of the base members 200 of the second tower 102-2 in an overlapping configuration without loss of alignment between the support members 300 of the two towers 102.

[0046] Referring to FIGs. 3A to 30, the support member 300 can have a generally inverted U-shape 302 having a pair of vertical posts, such as the vertical posts 302B-1 and 302B-2 (individually and collectively referred to as vertical post / vertical posts 302B, herein) and a transverse post, such as the transverse post 302A connecting the two vertical posts 302B at an upper end of the two vertical posts 302B. When the support member 300 is coupled to the base members 200, the transverse post 302A is oriented horizontally parallel or at least substantially parallel to the ground to function as a shoulder pad for exercising.

[0046]

[0047] In an embodiment, the pair of base members 200 of a tower 102 can be slidably coupled to the two vertical posts 302B of the support member 300 of the tower 102. Slidable engagement allows the height of the tower 102 to be adjusted to meet the requirement of the user. The slidable coupling between the vertical posts 302B of the support member 300 and the vertical members 204 of the base members 200 can be based on a telescopic configuration in some embodiments. For example, the vertical member 204 of the base member 200 can be received within an inner hollow portion of the corresponding vertical post 302B of the support member 300 and be configured to slide in longitudinal direction.

[0047]

[0048] In an embodiment, there can be a locking configuration provided between the base members 200 and the support member 300 to lock the sliding movement between the two at a desired height of the tower 102. The locking configuration can include a series of holes 206 - which may comprise equally spaced holes 206 in some embodiments - in the vertical member 204 of the base members 200 along a length of the vertical member 204.A pair of retractable pins, such as the pins 106-1A and 106-1B in the first tower 102-1, and the pins 106-2A and 106-2B in the second tower 102-2 (individually and collectively referred to as pins 106), as shown in FIG. 1A or other coupling members may be provided to perform the locking function. The pins 106 can be configured with the vertical posts 302B of the support member 300 such that the pins 106, on being released, engage with a selected hole 206 of the vertical member 204 of the base members 200 to inhibit or prevent sliding movement between the base member 200 and the support member 300 and thereby lock the assembly in place at a desired height.

[0048]

[0049] In an embodiment, the vertical member 204 of the base members 200 and the vertical post 302B of the support member 300 can be made of tubes of suitable dimensions to enable telescopic engagement between the two. In addition to slidable engagement, in some embodiments, the round tubes can also allow vertical member 204 of the base members 200 to rotate relative to the vertical post 302B of the support member. Thus, when the tower 102 is required to be packed, such as for transportation or storage, the base members 200 can be rotated relative to the corresponding vertical post 302B of the support member 300, after withdrawing the retractable pins 106 to unlock them, to bring the horizontal members 202 of the base members 200 closer to the support member 300, such as in the same plane as the support member 300 in some embodiments. This can reduce the volume of the tower 102. Thereafter, the two towers 102 can be placed one over the other to provide for a compact packing.

[0049]

[0050] In an embodiment, the modular and adjustable power tower apparatus 100 can further include one or more foot pads, such as foot pads 400A-1, 400A-2, 400B-1 and 400B-2 (individually and collectively referred to as foot pad / foot pads 400, herein), as shown in FIGs. 1A and IB. The one or more foot pads 400 can be provided on the base member 200 of the towers 102, as shown in FIGs. 2A, or on the support members 300, as shown in FIGs. 3A and 3B, or both, as shown in FIG. 1A and IB. The foot pad(s) 400 can function as a third anchor point, besides the two arms of the user, which can allow a user to place his foot for assistance and leverage to lift his body in mid-air in various motions and directions.

[0050]

[0051] As can be appreciated, the design of the base member 200 can facilitate adjusting the width of the power tower apparatus according to the shoulder width of the user, in some cases without need of additional / special tools, such as by simply moving the towers 102 closer or away from each other.

[0051]

[0052] In a preferred embodiment, other portions of the support members 300 and / or the base members 200 can also be made of tubes. Further, ends of the lateral portion 202 of the base members 200 can be covered with a protective cap 108 (shown in FIG. 1A & 1C). The protective cap 108 can be configured to provide a frictional grip with ground surface, thereby helping to stabilize the towers 102 during use. The protective cap 108 can also help to soften and / or ease friction against the floor surface so as to prevent wear and tear to the floor surface while performing exercises. Further, the protective cap 108 can provide stability and traction against the floor surface, for example, while performing kicking motions and exercises, thereby preventing sliding around of the power tower when in use. The protective cap 108 may be made of material(s) having properties such as durability, shock absorbability, good traction, weather resistance and the like. The material used to manufacture the protective cap 108 can be selected from, but not limited to, rubber, silicone, Neoprene, ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam, thermoplastic elastomers, and the like.

[0052]

[0053] In an embodiment, the support member 300 can include an adjustable elbow pad 308 (shown in FIG. 3B) secured over the transverse post 302A using one or more connecting plates, such as connecting plates 308-1 and 308-2. The one or more connecting plates 308-1, 308-2 can be movably coupled with the transverse post 302A, such as coupled with an upper surface of the transverse post 302A as shown in FIG. 3A. The adjustable elbow pad(s) 308 can provide support to an elbow of the user while performing exercises and thereby reduce pressure on the elbow. The adjustable elbow pad(s) 308 can be adjusted in a forward and a backward direction, depending on the type of exercises to be performed. Each of the one or more connecting plates 308-1, 308-2 can, in some embodiments, include a vertical pin (not shown) that can slide in a through-groove (now shown) provided at the transverse post 302A to adjust the position of the adjustable elbow pad 308 and can be fixed by fasteners, such as nuts, pins, bolts, flanges, couplings, or the like.

[0053]

[0054] Further, each of the support members 300 can include a gripping handle 306 configured over the transverse post 302A to extend vertically. The gripping handle 306 enables the user to maintain balance and positioning by holding the gripping handle 306 while performing exercises. The gripping handle 306 can be cushioned in some embodiments to provide anti-slip gripping. In some embodiments, the gripping handle 306 can be configured to extend at an angle, rather than vertically, from the transverse post 302A. In some cases, the angle at which the gripping handle 306 extends from the transverse post 302A may be adjustable, such as, for example, by providing a series of holes and a locking pin, as previously described in other contexts.

[0054]

[0055] Further, in an implementation, the proposed power tower apparatus 100 can also be utilized for performing pull-up exercises by slightly adjusting the height of the set of support members 300 above the user's height.

[0055]

[0056] Thus, the present disclosure, in some embodiments, provides a modular and portable power tower apparatus 100 that is easy to assemble, portable, and / or has different height adjustments to perform various exercises, suitable for people of different heights. Further, the proposed power tower apparatus 100 may provide a provision to adjust gaps between the pair of base members 200 of the set of identical support members 300, so that users with different shoulder widths can easily perform the exercises.

[0056]
