Description

EARLY SWITCH FROM WIFI TO CELLULAR USING MACHINE LEARNINGCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED PATENT APPLICATION (S)

[0001] The present disclosure is part of a non-provisional application claiming the priority benefit of U.S. Patent Application No. 63 / 661, 633, filed 19 June 2024, the content of which herein being incorporated by reference in its entirety.TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The present disclosure is generally related to wireless communications and, more particularly, to early switch from WiFi to cellular using machine learning (ML) in wireless communications.BACKGROUND

[0003] Unless otherwise indicated herein, approaches described in this section are not prior art to the claims listed below and are not admitted as prior art by inclusion in this section.

[0004] In wireless communications such as mobile communications in accordance with the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards, mobile devices (e.g., user equipment (UE) ) can be equipped with cellular (e.g., 4th Generation (4G) and / or 5th Generation (5G) ) and WiFi modules. The Internet Protocol (IP) data stack of a mobile device can use WiFi whenever the mobile device can connect to a WiFi coverage. When WiFi is out of coverage, the data stack switches to a cellular network.

[0005] Currently, in a typical mobile device, the switch from WiFi to cellular does not occur until the WiFi signal is very weak of even until the WiFi link is lost. However, when the strength of the WiFi signal is weak, the throughput and service quality tends to be already poor, thereby negatively impacting user experience. Such scenario can happen, for example, when the user of the mobile device walks out of a building (e.g., house, office or hotel) with WiFi to an open space where cellular services are available. One reason to keep WiFi connection as long as possible could be that often times WiFi connection is free of charge. Accordingly, if the mobile device can change its internet connectivity from WiFi to cellular earlier, then it is likely that the mobile device could maintain good throughput and service quality, especially when the mobility pattern is known or predictable (e.g., that the mobile device is to eventually leave the WiFi coverage) .

[0006] Therefore, there is a need for a solution of early switch from WiFi to cellular using machine learning in wireless communications.SUMMARY

[0007] The following summary is illustrative only and is not intended to be limiting in any way. That is, the following summary is provided to introduce concepts, highlights, benefits and advantages of the novel and non-obvious techniques described herein. Selected implementations are further described below in the detailed description. Thus, the following summary is not intended to identify essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended for use in determining the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0008] An objective of the present disclosure is to propose solutions or schemes that address the issue (s) described herein. More specifically, various schemes proposed in the present disclosure pertain to early switch from WiFi to cellular using machine learning in wireless communications. It is believed that implementations of the various proposed schemes may address or otherwise alleviate the aforementioned issue (s) .

[0009] For instance, under the proposed schemes in accordance with the present disclosure, a mobile device may perform early switch from WiFi to cellular by using machine learning with a neural network (and training results thereof) to differentiate patterns in the drop or decay in WiFi received signal strength indicators (RSSIs) between leaving a WiFi network (e.g., leaving a house or building) and staying in the WiFi network (e.g., staying in the house or building) . Additionally, under the proposed schemes, a WiFi access point (AP) basic service set identifier (BSSID) may be used as an input to the neural network for training and inference in addition to inputting data of WiFi RSSI time series. Moreover, under the proposed schemes, a partial data series may expand to a full data by interpolation to provide early prediction. Advantageously, one or more of the proposed schemes may allow the mobile device to utilize machine learning to recognize patterns of leaving a WiFi network soon and early enough to switch from a WiFi connection to a cellular connection, without waiting till the mobile device is out of WiFi coverage when throughput is low or quality of service (QoS) is poor.

[0010] In one aspect, a method may involve an apparatus (e.g., a mobile device / UE) determining to switch from a first type of wireless connection to a second type of wireless connection based on a pattern recognized by machine learning. The method may also involve the apparatus switching from the first type of wireless connection to the second type of wireless connection responsive to the determining.

[0011] In another aspect, an apparatus may include a transceiver configured to communicate wirelessly and a processor coupled to the transceiver. The processor may determine to switch from a first type of wireless connection to a second type of wireless connection based on a pattern recognized by machine learning. The processor may also switch, via the transceiver, from the first type of wireless connection to the second type of wireless connection responsive to the determining.

[0012] It is noteworthy that, although description provided herein may be in the context of certain radio access technologies, networks, and network topologies for wireless communication, such as 5th Generation (5G)  / New Radio (NR) mobile communications, 6th Generation (6G) mobile communications and beyond, the proposed concepts, schemes and any variation (s)  / derivative (s) thereof may be implemented in, for and by other types of radio access technologies, networks and network topologies such as, for example and without limitation, Evolved Packet System (EPS) , Long-Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced, LTE-Advanced Pro, Internet-of-Things (IoT) , Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) , Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) , vehicle-to-everything (V2X) , and non-terrestrial network (NTN) communications. Thus, the scope of the present disclosure is not limited to the examples described herein.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0022] Detailed embodiments and implementations of the claimed subject matters are disclosed herein. However, it shall be understood that the disclosed embodiments and implementations are merely illustrative of the claimed subject matters which may be embodied in various forms. The present disclosure may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the exemplary embodiments and implementations set forth herein. Rather, these exemplary embodiments and implementations are provided so that the description of the present disclosure is thorough and complete and will fully convey the scope of the present disclosure to those skilled in the art. In the description below, details of well-known features and techniques may be omitted to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the presented embodiments and implementations. Overview

[0023] Implementations in accordance with the present disclosure relate to various techniques, methods, schemes and / or solutions pertaining to early switch from WiFi to cellular using machine learning in wireless communications. According to the present disclosure, a number of possible solutions may be implemented separately or jointly. That is, although these possible solutions may be described below separately, two or more of these possible solutions may be implemented in one combination or another. Moreover, although various proposed schemes in accordance with the present disclosure may be described in the context of performing early switch from WiFi to cellular, the proposed schemes may also be applied to other contexts of early switch from one wireless technology (or a first type of wireless connection) to another wireless technology (or a second type of wireless connection) and not limited to early switch from WiFi to cellular.

[0024] FIG. 1 illustrates an example scenario 100 under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. Part (A) of FIG. 1 shows an example operation in a mobile device, or UE, capable of wireless communications via different technologies including WiFi, in compliance with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard (s) , and cellular communications, in compliance with the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standard (s) . That is, the mobile device may be equipped with WiFi and cellular modules. When the mobile device is within WiFi coverage, the mobile device may transmit and receive data via a WiFi connection. When the mobile device is out of WiFi coverage but in cellular coverage, the mobile device may switch to a cellular connection to transmit and receive data.

[0025] Part (B) of FIG. 1 shows late switch from WiFi to cellular versus early switch from WiFi to cellular. As the mobile device moves away from an AP of a WiFi network (e.g., a wireless local area network (WLAN) ) , the WiFi RSSI tends to decay or drop. In conventional and existing approaches, the WiFi to cellular switch typically does not happen until the WiFi signal strength or quality is very poor, and this is shown as “Case 2” as late switch from WiFi to cellular. Under various proposed schemes in accordance with the present disclosure, early switch from WiFi to cellular for the mobile device may happen by using machine learning with a neural network to differentiate WiFi RSSI drop patterns between a scenario of leaving a WiFi network (e.g., leaving a house or building) and another scenario of staying in the WiFi network (e.g., staying in the house or building) . For instance, the BSSID associated with the WiFi AP may be used as an input for training and inference of the neural network, in addition to inputting data of WiFi RSSI time series. Advantageously, the switch from WiFi to cellular may occur before the WiFi RSSI decays or otherwise degrades to a predefined threshold, thereby avoiding negative user experience.

[0026] FIG. 2 illustrates an example scenario 200 under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. Referring to FIG. 2, machine learning with a neural network (or deep learning) may be utilized in assisting or otherwise achieving the early switch from WiFi to cellular under the proposed schemes in accordance with the present disclosure, as machine Learning with a neural network may mimic human thinking to recognize different patterns. Under the proposed scheme, one neural network may include an input layer, one or more hidden layers, and an output layer. To enable the neural network to recognize patterns (e.g., mobility patterns of a mobile device) , the neural network may be pre-trained with one or more training data sets including multiple instances of input and correct output (called label yj) . The process of training the neural network with correct output may be referred to as supervised learning. After training (e.g., with training data set (s) including input (s) and output (s) ) , the neural network may infer the output  based on new input xi. Under the proposed scheme, one application of machine learning with the neural network may be to classify between two classes (e.g., a mobile device is leaving a WiFi network versus the mobile device is staying in coverage of the WiFi network) .

[0027] FIG. 3 illustrates an example scenario 300 under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. In scenario 300, the neural network may be used to infer whether or not a mobile device is leaving a WiFi network or still stays in the WiFi network. The neural network may use any available deep learning method of classifying between two classes (e.g., Class 1 and Class 0) in the output, as expressed below for example:

[0028] The neural network may take time series of WiFi RSSI values as input (e.g., r (1) , …r (i) , …r (n) ) , where each data point may be a time periodic sample of received WiFi RSSI at the mobile device. For instance, a neural network model may use any recurrent neural network (RNN) or one-dimensional convolution neural network (CNN) .

[0029] FIG. 4 illustrates an example scenario 400 under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. Since different WiFi networks can present different RSSI decay patterns, a respective neural network may be used for each WiFi AP, which may be identified by its associated BSSID. Thus, in scenario 400, different neural networks associated different WiFi APs may be trained with different training data sets as well as represented with different neural network parameters. Depending on a current BSSID, the respective neural network may be invoked to provide inference.

[0030] FIG. 5 illustrates an example scenario 500 under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. Different from scenario 400, in scenario 500, one neural network may use WiFi BSSID as input for training and inference, in addition to RSSI time series.

[0031] FIG. 6 illustrates an example scenario 600 under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. In scenario 600, data for training may be collected for a duration starting when the WiFi RSSI is below a predefined threshold (e.g., the threshold shown in part (B) of FIG. 1) . Although the input to the neural network for inference may require an n-point time series, early inference with only partial k-point (k < n) may use interpolation to expand to an n-point input.

[0032] In view of the above, it may be summarized that, under one or more of the proposed schemes a mobile device may utilize WiFi RSSI in machine learning (e.g., using a neural network or deep learning) to learn WiFi drop or decay patterns of the mobile device leaving a WiFi network or staying in coverage of the WiFi network. Additionally, neural network patterns may be separated per WiFi AP BSSID and may use currently sojourned WiFi AP BSSID to select or choose associated neural network parameters for inference. Moreover, WiFi AP BSSID (s) may be part of input to a neural network in learning and inference. Furthermore, input data may be expanded to a required full data set before inference. Illustrative Implementations

[0033] FIG. 7 illustrates an example communication system 700 having at least an example apparatus 710 and an example apparatus 720 in accordance with an implementation of the present disclosure. Each of apparatus 710 and apparatus 720 may perform various functions to implement schemes, techniques, processes and methods described herein pertaining to early switch from WiFi to cellular using machine learning in wireless communications, including the various schemes described above with respect to various proposed designs, concepts, schemes and systems, as well as example process (es) described below.
