AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing polyurethane adhesive compositions face challenges in achieving high thermal conductivity while maintaining adhesion and workability due to the addition of high concentrations of thermally conductive fillers, which negatively impact viscosity and structural properties such as elongation at break and lap shear strength, leading to cracking and adhesive failure on substrates like plastics and metals.

Method used

A two-component adhesive system comprising an isocyanate-reactive component with natural oil polyols, rosin esters, and thermally conductive fillers, and an isocyanate component with isocyanate-terminated prepolymers, which when mixed, form a thermally conductive polyurethane adhesive with improved peel strength and lap shear strength, suitable for various substrates.

Benefits of technology

The system achieves thermal conductivity of 1.2 W/m-K or 3.0 W/m-K with high peel strength (> 4 N/cm) and lap shear strength, curing at room temperature with good bonding on substrates like aluminum alloys and plastics, while minimizing cracking and adhesive failure.

Description

POLYURETHANE ADHESIVE SYSTEMS CONTAINING LIQUID ROSIN ESTERFIELD

[0001] Embodiments relate to a two component system for preparing thermally conductive polyurethane (PU) adhesive compositions.BACKGROUND

[0002] Thermal interface materials such as gap fillers, adhesives, and gels are used widely for thermal management in electronics and automotive applications. For example, electric vehicle (EV) batteries are cooled by assembling heat sources (e.g., battery components, cells) into contact with a heat sink (e.g., cooling plate ) that redirects heat from sensitive components. For efficient cooling, good thermal contact between the heat source and heat sink is needed, which often involves minimizing air gaps that can form from minor variations in opposed surfaces. A thermal interface material bridges air gaps between surfaces and provides thermal contact between the heat source and the heat sink. As battery designs and specifications evolve over time, thermal interface material compositions having higher adhesive properties are needed as operating conditions and mounting options change.

[0003] Due to low cost, low volatility, high body strength and toughness, polyurethane show promise as candidates for structural adhesives. However, to meet thermal conductivity requirements, relatively high concentrations of thermally conductive fillers are required (e.g., >85 wt%) , which can negatively impact viscosity and workability of the adhesive, reducing adhesion to common substrates such as plastics such as polyethylene terephthalate, and polycarbonates, and high surface energy substates such as aluminum and alloys. The addition of filler also may also affect a number of structural properties such as elongation at break and lap shear strength, leading to cracking and adhesive failure.Summary

[0004] In an aspect, embodiments disclosed herein are directed to two-component adhesive compositions, containing: an isocyanate-reactive component, containing: one or more selected from natural oil polyols and modified natural oil polyols, one or more chain extenders; and an isocyanate component containing one or more isocyanate-terminated prepolymers; and wherein the isocyanate-reactive and / or isocyanate component further comprises one or more rosin esters; and wherein the isocyanate-reactive and / or isocyanate component further comprises one or more thermally conductive fillers.

[0005] In another aspect, embodiments disclosed herein are directed to method of preparing a polyurethane adhesive composition, containing: forming a curable mixture by combining an isocyanate-reactive component and an isocyanate component, the isocyanate-reactive component, containing: one or more of natural oil polyols and modified natural oil polyols, one or more chain extenders; and the isocyanate component containing one or more isocyanate-terminated prepolymers; and applying the curable mixture to a first substrate; contacting the first substrate with a second substrate; and allowing the curable mixture to cure and form an adhesion between the first and second substrates.Detailed Description

[0063] Examples

[0064] The following examples are provided to illustrate the embodiments of the invention, but are not intended to limit the scope thereof. Table 1 provides the materials used in the following examples.

[0065] Example 1: Analysis of adhesive properties for polyurethane adhesive samples.

[0066] In this example, adhesive formulations were prepared to study the adhesive property changes of adding various rosin esters as a tackifying agent. Sample formulations were prepared by combining separately all the A-Side and B-Side components by high speed mixing. Prior to application, the A-side and B-side components were then combined by high speed mixing prior to application. Sample formulations and results are shown in Tables 2 to 4.

[0067] Bonding strength of the polyurethane adhesive compositions were characterized by lap shear and peel strength testing. Lap shear testing was performed according to the ASTM D 1002  on an Instron testing apparatus to characterize adhesive strength between aluminum-III alloy and a sample resin. During testing, bare aluminum plates (25.4mmX101.6mmX2mm) were coated with a 2mm layer of resin, and then bonded together over a set length of 25.4 mm. After a 24-hour curing period at room temperature, the samples were pulled at 12.7 mm / min until failure. Peel strength testing was conducted according to ASTM D903 using an Instron apparatus at 180-degree to characterize adhesion between PET film and aluminum-III alloy at room temperature. 10mm x 200mm aluminum cell were prepared and attached to either an aluminum or polymer plate coated with the resin thickness of 2mm and an attached length of 100 mm. After a 24-hour curing period at room temperature, the samples were pulled at 300 mm / min at 180° until failure.

[0068] In the examples, peel strength is lower in formulations containing no rosinate ester (CE1 and CE2) . The addition of 0.3 wt%to 7 wt%liquid rosin ester combination into Part A or B or both, improved both the initial peel strength and lap shear strength for inventive examples IE 1 to IE 11, which demonstrate a synergy between the rosin ester and polyol in polyurethane adhesive formulations for bonding performance at initial peel strength and lap shear strength. The difference in comparative sample CE4 and inventive sample IE 11 also shows that decreasing the rosin ester concentration causes a commensurate decrease in 24 hour peel strength.

[0069] While the foregoing is directed to exemplary embodiments, other and further embodiments may be devised without departing from the basic scope thereof, and the scope thereof is determined by the claims that follow.
