[0001] FIELDS

[0002] Example embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the field of communication techniques and in particular, to devices and methods for ambient internet of thing (IoT) .BACKGROUND

[0003] Internet of Things, or IoT, is a network of physical devices. These devices can transfer data to one another without human intervention. The automation and digitalization of various industries open numbers of new markets requiring new IoT technologies of supporting battery-less devices with no energy storage capability or devices with energy storage that do not need to be replaced or recharged manually. It may consider devices being either battery-less or with limited energy storage capability (i.e., using a capacitor) and the energy is provided through the harvesting of radio waves, light, motion, heat, or any other power source that could be seen suitable. Considering the limited size and complexity required by practical applications for battery-less devices with no energy storage capability or devices with limited energy storage that do not need to be replaced or recharged manually, the output power of energy harvester is typically from 1μW to a few hundreds of μW. Existing cellular devices may not work well with energy harvesting due to their peak power consumption of higher than 10mW.SUMMARY

[0039] In some examples, values, procedures, or apparatus are referred to as ‘best, ’  ‘lowest, ’ ‘highest, ’ ‘minimum, ’ ‘maximum, ’ or the like. It will be appreciated that such descriptions are intended to indicate that a selection among many used functional alternatives can be made, and such selections need not be better, smaller, higher, or otherwise preferable to other selections.

[0040] As used herein, the term “resource, ” “transmission resource, ” “uplink resource, ” or “downlink resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, or any other resource enabling a communication, and the like. In the following, unless explicitly stated, a resource in both frequency domain and time domain will be used as an example of a transmission resource for describing some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments of the present disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.

[0041] As used herein, the term “IoT radio interface” may refer to an air interface that is used for IoT communication. The term “backscatter” used herein may refer to a method that uses an incident radio-frequency (RF) signal to transmit data without a battery or power source. The term “backscatter signal” used herein may refer to a reflection of ambient radio frequency signal.

[0042] The term “ambient IoT device” used herein is a 3GPP IoT device which is much smaller and cheaper compared to previous generations of IoT. The ultimate ambient IoT energy source is that from radio waves. Both Ambient IoT and Ambient computing rely upon energy harvesting as one of the key mechanisms for powering and enabling the technology. Energy harvesting, as it applies to Ambient IoT and Ambient Computing, is the harnessing of the power in ambient radio waves to power tiny computers. Ambient IoT device may have a new radio / air interface to a reader / node. The new radio interface may be frame based or non-frame based. Deploying ambient IoT service on existing system could reduce the operation cost and quickly commercialize the new service. The term “chip” used herein may refer to a transmission after modulation with a voltage higher than the voltage threshold or with a voltage lower than the voltage threshold. The term “chip duration” or “duration of chip” used herein may refer to how long the chip lasts.

[0043] In some solutions, Convolutional Code (CC) could be applied for ambient IoT physical device to reader channel (PDRCH) . However, the sub-block interleaver after CC should not be applied since interleaver needs much logical operation and buffer which  could be beyond the capability of the device. However, without the interleaver, and for some code rate, the protect performance of each bit may depend on the position of the bit. For example, when the input number of bits is 100 and output number of bits is 150, i.e. code rate 2 / 3 is indicated to device. If the output bits is the all 100 bits of d0 (the first sub-block which is encoded by G0) and the first 50 bits ofdl (the second sub-block which is encoded by G1) , then the protect performance of the first 50 input bits is better than the last 50 input bits. It's harmful from the whole input bits perspective which could reduce the protect performance of the block.

[0044] In some other solutions, , when the number of bits is less than a threshold, e.g. 11 bits, RM (Reed Muller) code is applied. However, RM code encoder is more complex than CC encoder. It needs to apply CC when the number of encoder bits is less than the threshold. When a tail biting convolutional code with constraint length 7 is used for ambient IoT PDRCH encoding, the initial value of the shift register of the encoder may be set to the values corresponding to the last 6 information bits in the input stream so that the initial and final states of the shift register are the same. However, when the number of information bits is less than 6, there are no the last 6 information bits in the input stream.

[0045] Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0046] FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B illustrate schematic diagrams of example communication environments in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented, respectively. As shown in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B, a plurality of communication devices, including a device 110 and a device 120, can communicate with each other. In the example of FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B, the device 110 may be an ambient IoT device / ambient IoT tag and the device 120 may be a base station serving a device 130 which is a UE.

[0047] It is to be understood that the number of devices and their connections shown in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The communication environment may include any suitable number of devices configured to implementing example embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more additional devices may be located in the cell, and one or more additional cells may be deployed in the communication environment. It is noted that although illustrated as a network device, the device 120 may be another device than a network device. Although illustrated as a terminal device, the  device 130 may be other device than a terminal device.

[0048] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the device 130 operating as a UE and the device 120 operating as a base station. However, in some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal device may be implemented at a network device or other device, and operations described in connection with a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other device.

[0049] In some example embodiments, if the device 130 is a terminal device and the device 120 is a network device, a link from the device 120 to the device 130 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the device 130 to the device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the device 130 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the device 130 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the device 120 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0050] The communications in the communication environments shown in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , New Radio (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0051] FIG. 1A shows a first topology 100 where the device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) directly and bidirectionally communicates with the device 120. The communication between the device 120 and the device 110 may include ambient IoT data and / or signalling. This first topology 100 may include the possibility that the device 120 transmitting to the device 110 is a different from the device 120 receiving from the device 110. For example, the first topology 100 may be deployed in a scenario where the device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) and the device 120 may be indoors.

[0052] FIG. 1B shows a second topology 100' where the device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) communicates bidirectionally with an intermediate node (i.e., the device 130) between the device 110 and the device 120. In the second topology 100', the intermediate node may be a relay, IAB node, UE, repeater, and the like. which is capable of Ambient IoT. The intermediate node may transfer Ambient IoT data and / or signalling between the device 110 and the device 120. For example, the second topology 100' may be deployed in a scenario where the device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) and the device 120 may be outdoor.

[0053] In some embodiments, an air interface design with minimized differences (where necessary) for Ambient IoT may enable the following devices: (1) Device 1 ~1 μW peak power consumption, has energy storage, initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, neither DL nor UL amplification in the device, the device's UL transmission is backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally; and (2) Device 2a and Device 2b ≤ a few hundred μW peak power consumptionl, has energy storage, initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, both DL and / or UL amplification in the device. The UL transmission of Device 2a may be backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally. The UL transmission of Device 2b may be generated internally by the device. It is to be understood that “≤ a few hundred μW” means WGs are not tasked with setting a particular value, and that it will be for WG discussions to determine if a presented design with corresponding power consumption satisfies the “≤ a few hundred μW” requirement.

[0054] In some embodiments, there may be different types of ambient IoT devices, including: a first type of device (i.e., Device A) which has no energy storage and no independent signal generation / amplification, i.e. backscattering transmission, a second type of device (i.e., Device B) which has energy storage but no independent signal generation, i.e. backscattering transmission, and a third type of device (i.e., Device C) which has energy storage and independent signal generation, i.e., active RF components for transmission. For the second type of device, use of stored energy can include amplification for reflected signals. The device 110 may be any of the first, second or third types of devices.

[0055] A limited energy storage can be different among implementations within Device B or implementations within Device C, and different between Device B and Device C. Such storage is expected to be order (s) of magnitude smaller than an NB-IoT device would typically include. For Device A, the power consumption target during  transmitting / receiving is ≤ 1 μW or ≤ 10 μW. For Device B, the target during transmitting / receiving is such that: Device A power consumption << Device B power consumption < Device C power consumption; or Device A power consumption ≤ Device B power consumption < Device C power consumption. The device power consumption during transmitting / receiving for Device C is ≤ 1 mW to ≤ 10 mW. For Device A, the complexity target is to be comparable to UHF RFID ISO18000-6C (EPC C1G2) . For Device B, the target is such that: Device A complexity < Device B complexity < Device C complexity. For Device C, the complexity target is to be orders-of-magnitude lower than NB-IoT.

[0056] Reference is made to FIG. 2, which illustrates a signaling flow 200 of a transmission between a reader and a device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 200 involves the first device 210 and the second device 220. The first device 210 may be an ambient IoT device and the second device 220 may be an ambient IoT reader.

[0057] The first device 210 determines (2010) a plurality of subblocks related to a signal on which a channel coding is applied. Each of the plurality of subblocks includes a sequence of bits generated based on the signal. For example, as shown in FIG. 3, the first device 210 may determine the plurality of subblocks 320-1, 320-2 and 320-3 related to the signal 310. It is noted that the number of subblocks shown in FIG. 3 is only an example not limitation.

[0058] The first device 210 determines (2020) at least one interval for at least one subblock of the plurality of subblocks. Alternatively, or in addition, the first device 210 may determine an offset for collecting the output bits of the at least one subblock. In some embodiments, intervals for each subblock may be different or same. Alternatively, or in addition, offsets for each subblock may be different or same. In this way, it can achieve simple interval based rate matching.

[0059] In some embodiments, the first device 210 may determine (2020) the at least one interval based on a code rate for the signal. Alternatively, or in addition, the first device 210 may determine an offset for collecting the output bits of the at least one subblock. For example, the first device 210 may determine the offset based on the code rate for the signal.

[0060] In some other embodiments, the second device 220 may transmit (2015) control  information indicating the at least one interval to the first device 210. In addition, in this case, the first device 210 may determine a code rate based on the control information. Alternatively, or in addition, the control information may also indicate the offset.

[0061] In some embodiments, there may be a field corresponding to a table to indicate the interval and / or offset of each sub-block for bit collection as below. In such way, code rate may be inferred based on the indication of the field. For example, as shown in Table 1, if the bit field in the control information indicates “00” , the first device 210 may determine the interval for the subblock 320-1 is 1 and determine the interval for the subblock 320-2 is 1. In this case, the code rate may be 1 / 2.

[0062] Table 1

[0063] The first device 210 collects (2030) output bits from the at least one subblock based on the at least one interval. For example, as shown in FIG. 3, for each sub-block (such as 320-1, 320-2, 320-3) , the interval is applied on the output bits for bit collection. Every interval of output bits for a sub-block may be collected. For example, if the interval is 2, every odd or every even position of the output bits are collected. As another example, if the interval number is p for sub-block s, the collected bits is ek+N (s) = d (k*p + offset) (s) . In this case, offset is the parameter to determine the collected bits for a sub-block and N (s) is number of collected bits before sub-block 2.

[0064] In some embodiments, for each bit at bit position k, the output bits are collected from the at least one subblock at bit position k and then collected from another subblock at bit position k. In this case, k may be an integer. For example, the interval for the first sub-block is 1 and interval for the second sub-block is p, the collected bits is ek* (p+1) +i =dk*p+i (0) and ek* (p+1) +p = dk*p (1) , i.e., the collected bits is d00 , d10 , d01 , d20 , d30 , d21 when p=2, where offset is the optional parameter to determine the collected bits for a sub-block.  In this way, the sub-block first and bit position second bits collection does not need buffer of bits which can reduce device's complexity.

[0065] In some embodiments, the first device 210 may transmit (2040) the collected output bits to the second device 220. In other words, the second device 220 may receive (2040) the collected output bits from the first device 210.

[0066] Reference is made to FIG. 4, which illustrates a signaling flow 400 of a transmission between a reader and a device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 400 involves the first device 410 and the second device 420. The first device 410 may be an ambient IoT device and the second device 420 may be an ambient IoT reader.

[0067] The first device 410 determines (4010) whether the number of bits in a first set of bits is equal to or above a first number threshold. For example, the first number threshold may be 6.

[0068] If the number of bits being less than the first number threshold, the first device 410 combines (4020) the first set of bits with a second set of bits. In this case, a total number of bits in the combined first and second sets of bits is equal to or above the first number threshold.

[0069] In some embodiments, the second set of bits may include a number of zero bits. For example, a number of zero bits may be padded after the input bits (i.e., the first set of bits) until the total number of padding bits and input bits is equal to 6. In some embodiments, an initial value of the shift register of the encoder is set to the values corresponding to the input bits and padding bits.

[0070] In some other embodiments, the second set of bits may include one or more repetitions of the first set of bits. For example, block repeating the input bits may be performed until the number of bits after repetition is equal to or larger than 6. For example, an initial value of the shift register of the encoder may be set to the values corresponding to the last 6 information bits in the input stream after repetition.

[0071] In some further embodiments, ifthe number of bits in the first set of bits is equal to a second number threshold, the second set of bits may include one or more repetitions of the first set of bits. For example, the second number threshold may be 1. By way of example, if the number of input bits (i.e., the first set of bits) is 1, only repetition of input bit may be applied. Alternatively, if the number of bits in the first set of bits is below the  first number threshold and above a second number threshold, a channel coding tail biting convolutional code with constraint length 3 may be applied to the first set of bits. For example, ifthe number of input bits is larger than 1 and less than 6, another CC tail biting convolutional code with constraint length 3 is applied. The initial value of the shift register of the encoder shall be set to the values corresponding to the last 2 information bits in the input stream so that the initial and final states of the shift register are the same.

[0072] The first device 410 applies (4030) a channel coding to the combined first and second sets of bits. For example, the first device 410 may apply a convolutional coding to the combined first and second sets of bits.

[0073] In some embodiments, the first device 210 may transmit (4040) the combined first and second sets bits to the second device 220. In other words, the second device 220 may receive (2040) the combined first and second sets bits from the first device 210.

[0074] Reference is made to FIG. 5, which illustrates a signaling flow 500 of a transmission between a reader and a device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 500 involves the first device 510 and the second device 520. The first device 510 may be an ambient IoT device and the second device 520 may be an ambient IoT reader.

[0075] The first device 510 determines (5010) whether the first device supports a convolutional coding. If the first device supporting the convolutional coding, the first device 510 applies (5020) recursive system convolutional coding for a transmission to a second device 520. For example, as shown in FIG. 6, when the code rate less than 1 for PDRCH is indicated and CC (Convolutional Code) is supported, recursive system CC may be used for uplink transmission where the system bits dk0 630 is transmitted first and then parity bits dk1 620-1 and dk2 620-2.

[0076] Alternatively, if the first device 510 does not support the convolutional coding, the first device 510 may apply a block level repetition for the transmission to the second device 520. The code rate for the convolutional coding may be less than a predetermined value. For example, when the code rate less than 1 for PDRCH is indicated and CC (Convolutional Code) is not supported, block level repetition of transmitted bits may be used for uplink transmission.

[0077] The first device 510 may transmit (5030) the signal to the second device 520. After receiving the signal, the second device 520 may decode the signal. For example, the  second device 520 (i.e., receiver) may firstly do correlation of the first block and the second block to detect whether CC is applied by the device. For example, when the correlation value is larger than a threshold, repetition is assumed to be applied by the receiver. Otherwise, CC is assumed to be applied. In this way, recursive system CC does not much increase the implementation complexity while is easier for the blind detection of the device capability.

[0078] Reference is made to FIG. 7, which illustrates a signaling flow 700 of a transmission between a reader and a device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 700 involves the first device 710 and the second device 720. The first device 710 may be an ambient IoT device and the second device 720 may be an ambient IoT reader.

[0079] The first device 710 applies (7010) a first encoder to control part bits of a transmission block. For example, as shown in FIG. 8A, the first device 710 may apply the first encoder to the control part bits 810.

[0080] The first device 710 applies (7020) a second encoder to data part bits of the transmission block. For example, as shown in FIG. 8A, the first device 710 may apply the second encoder to the data part bits 814 of the transmission block 800. In other words, two CC encoders may be applied on the control part and data part separately.

[0081] In some embodiments, the control part bits with corresponding cyclic redundancy check 812, an initial value of a shift register of the first encoder is set to values corresponding to last information bits in the control part bits with corresponding cyclic redundancy check. 19. In some other embodiments, for the data part bits with corresponding cyclic redundancy check 816, an initial value of a shift register of the second encoder is set to values corresponding to last information bits in the data part bits with corresponding cyclic redundancy check.

[0082] In some embodiments, the first encoder and the second encoder are of different code rates. Since the different code rate on control part and data part, it has benefit to protect control information more reliable.

[0083] The first device 710 transmits (7030) the transmission block to a second device 720. In other words, the second device 720 receives (7030) the transmission block from the first device 710.

[0084] In some embodiments, a single CC encoder is applied on the TB. For example,  as shown in FIG. 8B, before channel coding, some bits 820 in the TB 800' is copied and added at the end of the TB 800'. The number of copy bits may be equal to the number of bits used to initial the value of the shift register. The position of copy bits may be at the end of control part (the first part of the TB) . In this way, the starting state, medium state and ending state of Viterbi decoding should be the same, which can be used to increase decoding performance.
