Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MEASUREMENTFIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The present disclosure generally relates to communication networks, and more specifically, to a method and apparatus for measurement.BACKGROUND

[0002] This section introduces aspects that may facilitate a better understanding of the disclosure. Accordingly, the statements of this section are to be read in this light and are not to be understood as admissions about what is in the prior art or what is not in the prior art.

[0003] With the rapid development of networking and communication technologies, wireless communication networks such as long-term evolution (LTE)  / fourth generation (4G) network and new radio (NR)  / fifth generation (5G) network are expected to achieve high traffic capacity and energy efficiency. For the purpose of obtaining satisfactory network service and communication quality, a terminal device such as a user equipment (UE) may perform measurement (e.g., radio resource management (RRM) measurement, beam measurement, synchronization measurement, etc. ) for one or more measurement objects in a communication network and implement various operations (e.g., link adaption, cell (re) selection, connection (re) establishment, etc. ) according to a result of the measurement. Recently, the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) discusses some use cases of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques for measurement prediction.SUMMARY

[0004] This summary is provided to introduce a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are further described below in the detailed description. This summary is not intended to identify key features or essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended to be used to limit the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0005] Measurement prediction may be introduced to reduce overhead due to measurement related operations. Considering the diversity of network configurations and application scenarios, using prediction in measurement while meeting quality of service (QoS) requirements may become more challenging. For example, in a use case of inter-frequency measurement, a UE may be configured to tune from the current working frequency to a target frequency to implement measurement on the target frequency, which may cause an interruption of communication on the current working frequency. If the UE can predict a measurement result with respect to the target frequency without tuning to the target frequency, the communication interruption during frequency (re-) tuning may be mitigated, and the overhead of inter-frequency measurement operations can be decreased. However, if a configuration for measurement with prediction always uses an invariable prediction pattern, e.g., the positions and the number of prediction occasions are always fixed, the prediction accuracy may not be adjusted as required. This may result in a mismatch between measurement performance and network requirements (e.g., when the prediction accuracy is much lower than or higher than the target accuracy, etc. ) , especially in variable communication environments, thereby degrading the network service performance and / or causing unnecessary waste of resources. Therefore, it may be desirable to design a more effective measurement mechanism with prediction.

[0006] Various exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure propose a solution for measurement, which can enable a terminal device to support different measurement prediction configurations and optionally adjust a measurement prediction configuration adaptively.

[0007] It can be appreciated that the term “measurement prediction configuration” may refer to a configuration of actual measurement operation (s) and prediction operation (s) for a measurement object. The measurement prediction configuration may indicate a measurement to prediction (M-to-P) pattern and optionally an expected prediction accuracy. The M-to-P pattern may reflect an arrangement of the actual measurement operation (s) and / or the prediction operation (s) in temporal / frequency / spatial domain (e.g., the distribution and / or position of measurement occasions, etc. ) . Different M-to-P patterns may be associated with different prediction accuracies. Therefore, an adjustment of measurement prediction configuration may lead to a change of M-to-P pattern and optionally a change of prediction accuracy. It is noted that the terms “measurement to prediction pattern” , “M-to-P pattern” , “measurement and prediction pattern” and “prediction pattern” may be used interchangeably in this document.

[0008] According to a first aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a method performed by a terminal device. The method comprises: obtaining one or more first actual measurements and / or one or more first predicted measurements for a measurement object according to a first measurement prediction configuration. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the method further comprises: transmitting the one or more first actual measurements and / or the one or more first predicted measurements to a network node.

[0009] According to a second aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided an apparatus which may be implemented as a terminal device. The apparatus may comprise one or more processors and one or more memories storing computer program codes. The one or more memories and the computer program codes may be configured to, with the one or more processors, cause the apparatus at least to perform any step of the method according to the first aspect of the present disclosure.

[0010] According to a third aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a computer-readable medium having computer program codes embodied thereon which, when executed on a computer, cause the computer to perform any step of the method according to the first aspect of the present disclosure.

[0011] According to a fourth aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided an apparatus which may be implemented as a terminal device. The apparatus may comprise an obtaining unit and a transmitting unit. In accordance with some exemplary embodiments, the obtaining unit may be operable to carry out at least the obtaining step of the method according to the first aspect of the present disclosure. The transmitting unit may be operable to carry out at least the transmitting step of the method according to the first aspect of the present disclosure.

[0012] According to a fifth aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a method performed by a network node. The method comprises: receiving, from a terminal device, one or more first actual measurements and / or one or more first predicted measurements obtained for a measurement object according to a first measurement prediction configuration.

[0013] According to a sixth aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided an apparatus which may be implemented as a network node. The apparatus may comprise one or more processors and one or more memories storing computer program codes. The one or more memories and the computer program codes may be configured to, with the one or more processors, cause the apparatus at least to perform any step of the method according to the fifth aspect of the present disclosure.

[0014] According to a seventh aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a computer-readable medium having computer program codes embodied thereon which, when executed on a computer, cause the computer to perform any step of the method according to the fifth aspect of the present disclosure.

[0015] According to an eighth aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided an apparatus which may be implemented as a network node. The apparatus may comprise a receiving unit and optionally a transmitting unit. In accordance with some exemplary embodiments, the receiving unit may be operable to carry out at least the receiving step of the method according to the fifth aspect of the present disclosure. The transmitting unit may be operable to carry out at least the transmitting step of the method according to the fifth aspect of the present disclosure.

[0016] According to various exemplary embodiments, a terminal device can perform measurement for a measurement object according to a measurement prediction configuration, e.g., adaptive to service requirements. The measurement prediction configuration may indicate a M-to-P pattern which may be used to determine an arrangement of actual and / or predicted measurements, e.g., in temporal / frequency / spatial domain. The terminal device may obtain the actual and / or predicted measurements in a ratio associated with the M-to-P pattern. Since the terminal device can predict some measurements without actually measuring for the measurement object, signaling overhead and energy consumption for preforming actual measurement and / or resource switching (e.g., tuning from a frequency to another frequency for inter-frequency measurement, etc. ) can be reduced, thereby enhancing network performance such as throughput. In addition, the measurement prediction configuration of the terminal device can be adaptively adjusted, e.g., according to a prediction accuracy requirement. This can enhance flexibility of measurement prediction configuration and achieve effective utilization of different M-to-P patterns while improving resource efficiency.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0033] The embodiments of the present disclosure are described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. It should be understood that these embodiments are discussed only for the purpose of enabling those skilled persons in the art to better understand and thus implement the present disclosure, rather than suggesting any limitations on the scope of the present disclosure. Reference throughout this specification to features, advantages, or similar language does not imply that all of the features and advantages that may be realized with the present disclosure should be or are in any single embodiment of the disclosure. Rather, language referring to the features and advantages is understood to mean that a specific feature, advantage, or characteristic described in connection with an embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present disclosure. Furthermore, the described features, advantages, and characteristics of the disclosure may be combined in any suitable manner in one or more embodiments. One skilled in the relevant art will recognize that the disclosure may be practiced without one or more of the specific features or advantages of a particular embodiment. In other instances, additional features and advantages may be recognized in certain embodiments that may not be present in all embodiments of the disclosure.

[0034] As used herein, the term “communication network” refers to a network following any suitable communication standards, such as new radio (NR) , long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced, wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) , high-speed packet access (HSPA) , and so on. Furthermore, the communications between a terminal device and a network node in the communication network may be performed according to any suitable generation communication protocols, including, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , 4G, 4.5G, 5G communication protocols, and / or any other protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0035] The term “network node” refers to a network device in a communication network via which a terminal device accesses to the network and receives services therefrom. The network node may refer to a base station (BS) , an access point (AP) , a multi-cell / multicast coordination entity (MCE) , a controller or any other suitable device in a wireless communication network. The BS may be, for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , a next generation NodeB (gNodeB or gNB) , a remote radio unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, a low power node such as a femto, a pico, and so forth.

[0036] Yet further examples of the network node comprise multi-standard radio (MSR) radio equipment such as MSR BSs, network controllers such as radio network controllers (RNCs) or base station controllers (BSCs) , base transceiver stations (BTSs) , transmission points, transmission nodes, positioning nodes and / or the like. More generally, however, the network node may represent any suitable device (or group of devices) capable, configured, arranged, and / or operable to enable and / or provide a terminal device access to a wireless communication network or to provide some service to a terminal device that has accessed to the wireless communication network.

[0037] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that can access a communication network and receive services therefrom. By way of example and not limitation, the terminal device may refer to a mobile terminal, a user equipment (UE) , or other suitable devices. The UE may be, for example, a subscriber station, a portable subscriber station, a mobile station (MS) or an access terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, portable computers, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, a tablet, a wearable device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , a vehicle, and the like.

[0038] As yet another specific example, in an Internet of things (IoT) scenario, a terminal device may also be called an IoT device and represent a machine or other device that performs monitoring, sensing and / or measurements etc., and transmits the results of such monitoring, sensing and / or measurements etc. to another terminal device and / or a network equipment. The terminal device may in this case be a machine-to-machine (M2M) device, which may in a 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) context be referred to as a machine-type communication (MTC) device.

[0039] As one particular example, the terminal device may be a UE implementing the 3GPP narrow band Internet of things (NB-IoT) standard. Particular examples of such machines or devices are sensors, metering devices such as power meters, industrial machinery, or home or personal appliances, e.g., refrigerators, televisions, personal wearables such as watches etc. In other scenarios, a terminal device may represent a vehicle or other equipment, for example, a medical instrument that is capable of monitoring, sensing and / or reporting etc. on its operational status or other functions associated with its operation.

[0040] As used herein, the terms “first” , “second” and so forth refer to different elements. The singular forms “a” and “an” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. The terms “comprises” , “comprising” , “has” , “having” , “includes” and / or “including” as used herein, specify the presence of stated features, elements, and / or components and the like, but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, elements, components and / or combinations thereof. The term “based on” is to be read as “based at least in part on” . The term “one embodiment” and “an embodiment” are to be read as “at least one embodiment” . The term “another embodiment” is to be read as “at least one other embodiment” . Other definitions, explicit and implicit, may be included below.

[0041] There is an on-going study item (SI) on AI mobility for Release 19 (Rel-19) in 3GPP, and the objectives of this SI include RRM measurement prediction, measurement event prediction, radio link failure (RLF) prediction and handover failure (HOF) prediction via AI / ML. The RRM measurement prediction can be temporal prediction, spatial prediction or frequency-domain prediction.

[0042] The discussion related to RRM measurement in 3GPP may cover spatial-domain, time-domain and frequency-domain prediction. One of the enhancements via AI / ML is to reduce the configuration and reporting overhead, especially when data are collected at the UE side and measurements are reported from a UE to a NW. For example, in the inter-frequency measurement use case, if a measurement object needs to be measured on other frequency as a target frequency, the NW may configure the UE to tune to the target frequency. If the UE can predict a measurement result on the target frequency, it may be possible for the UE to stay on the current working frequency without tuning to the target frequency and performing actual measurement with respect to the measurement object. In this way, the configuration and reporting overhead related to measurement may be saved for throughput enhancement.

[0043] In addition, the fact that the UE needs to be configured with measurement gaps and that the UE needs to take measurements during periods where the measurement gaps have been allocated may imply that the UE is not able to exchange data with the NW during such measurement gap periods, thereby decreasing the performance with which the UE can be served.

[0044] Furthermore, the existing prediction-based solutions are always undertaken with a fixed pattern which may not adapt to variable application scenarios. The existing solutions may not consider to decrease the number of actual measurement operations even if the accuracy of prediction goes far better than expected. On the other side, in the case of a specified or fixed prediction pattern, the AI / ML model may have to be offload if the prediction accuracy degrades below expectation. Then the measurement procedure may need to fall back to the legacy routine, which may be rather complicated and inefficient.

[0045] Therefore, it may be desirable to exploit a mechanism to reduce the performance impact caused by a process of configuring, collecting and reporting measurements at the UE side, especially for the case that the prediction accuracy is acceptable or above expectation.

[0046] Various exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure propose solutions to implement a flexible configuration of measurement and prediction, which may support adaptive adjustment of prediction pattern for measurement (e.g., RRM measurement in AI mobility, etc. ) . According to a solution proposed in the present disclosure, when the prediction accuracy (e.g., the accuracy of AI / ML prediction, etc. ) is acceptable, a NW or a UE can adjust the configuration of a M-to-P ratio (i.e., a ratio of the number of actual measurements to the number of predicted measurements) automatically to achieve measurement and prediction in a more efficient way while saving resources. As such, more temporal / frequency / spatial resources may be released for throughput enhancement, in case the prediction accuracy is higher than expectation. On the other side, the AI / ML model for prediction may not need to be offline for retraining if the prediction accuracy is lower than expectation.

[0047] Fig. 1 is a diagram illustrating an exemplary signaling flow between a UE and a NW (e.g., via a network node) according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The UE may be capable of performing partial measurement and prediction. For the prediction in different domains, e.g., spatial domain, frequency domain and temporary domain, the UE may be configured to support one or more M-to-P patterns and each M-to-P pattern may be associated with a ratio of actual to predicted measurements. The ratio of actual to predicted measurements may be in the form of K: N, which means that by collecting K actual measurement values, a prediction model such as an AI / ML prediction model may be used to predict N measurement values, e.g., in future, or at another spatial location, or on another frequency. In general, the higher the ratio of actual to predicted measurements is, the more accurate the prediction outcome would be.

[0048] In order to achieve adaptive adjustment of measurement prediction configuration, the UE may have a capability report about one or more M-to-P patterns (e.g., including information about one or more M-to-P patterns supported by the UE) . As shown in Fig. 1, the UE may transmit the capability report to the NW. The NW may configure at least one of the one or more M-to-P patterns to the UE, enabling the UE to perform measurement and prediction (e.g. RRM measurement and prediction, etc. ) according to the configured M-to-P pattern.

[0049] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, a negotiation for the UE’s capability of supporting prediction patterns may be taken during a radio link establishment procedure. The UE may inform the NW of whether the UE can support prediction pattern adjustment or not. Optionally, if the UE is capable of supporting the prediction pattern adjustment, the UE may inform the NW of a list of supported prediction patterns.

[0050] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the NW can determine the lower bound of prediction pattern by referring to the service requirements (e.g., QoS requirements, etc. ) . Upon receiving the list of prediction patterns supported by the UE, the NW can figure out all acceptable prediction patterns above the lower bound of prediction pattern and inform the UE of a list of acceptable prediction patterns.

[0051] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, for the case where the measurement and prediction are performed at the UE side while the performance monitoring resides at the NW side, and / or for the case where the measurement and prediction as well as the performance monitoring are performed at the UE side, and  / or for the case where the measurement is performed at the UE side while the prediction and the performance monitoring reside at the NW side, the UE may report its currently used M-to-P pattern to the NW, e.g., along with a measurement report or separate from the measurement report. For the performance monitoring purpose, the NW may request the UE to report all actual RRM measurements periodically, semi-periodically, or non-periodically. When detecting a decrease or increase in performance compared to expectation, the NW may indicate an alternative M-to-P pattern to the UE explicitly or implicitly. In another embodiment, the UE may change the M-to-P pattern autonomously.

[0052] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, a table listing M-to-P patterns available for measurement prediction configuration may be predefined or preconfigured, so that information about one or more M-to-P patterns can be exchanged between a NW and a UE with less overhead, e.g., by using an index of a row in the table which represents a corresponding M-to-P pattern and the associated prediction accuracy. Some exemplary M-to-P patterns are listed in Table 1 as below. Table 1

[0053] In order to facilitate interaction between the NW and the UE, a table indicating M-to-P patterns and corresponding accuracies such as Table 1 may be stored at both NW side and UE side. A M-to-P pattern may be represented by a bit sequence. The length of the bit sequence may be up to the periodicity of M-to-P pattern. Taking six bits for example, as shown in Table 1, each bit may represent one measured or predicted sample, where 0 indicates an actual RRM measurement and 1 indicates a predicted RRM measurement (or vice versa) . In the first row of Table 1,000000 means that all RRM measurements are actually measured without prediction. Of course, the prediction accuracy in this case can achieve the maximum. To another extreme, if all the bits consist of 1, it means predicting RRM measurements all the time without performing actual measurement, which may be meaningless in some practical implementations. Therefore, the M-to-P pattern corresponding to the coarsest accuracy may be set as 011111 or something like that with only one 0 in total.

[0054] It can be appreciated that adding one more predicted sample in the M-to-P pattern, the prediction accuracy may degrade by one step, which is indicated as delta 1, delta 2, …, in Table 1. By using such a table, a M-to-P pattern can be indicated by an index in brief. Considering service requirements for the prediction accuracy, the NW may select, from the candidate M-to-P patterns reported by the UE, all the M-to-P patterns for which the associated prediction accuracies are above the accuracy threshold. In addition, according to the service requirements for the prediction accuracy, the NW and / or the UE can adjust measurement prediction configuration adaptively, e.g., by indicating an index of a preferred M-to-P pattern during configuration information communication.

[0055] It can be appreciated that Table 1 just lists some exemplary representations of M-to-P patterns, and other types of indication information about M-to-P patterns in suitable formats may also be applicable to the information interaction for a measurement prediction configuration between the NW and the UE. For example, two options may be adopted for a measurement prediction configuration, where one option is to define the measurement prediction configuration with a dedicated M-to-P pattern (e.g., arranging actual measurement and prediction with the specified positions and numbers, etc. ) , and the other option is to define the measurement prediction configuration by simply specifying a M-to-P ratio. When the NW and / or the UE adjusts the measurement prediction configuration, the M-to-P pattern and / or the M-to-P ratio may be changed adaptively, and thus the prediction accuracy associated with the measurement prediction configuration may also be adjusted correspondingly.

[0056] Many advantages may be achieved by applying the proposed solutions. For example, the proposed solutions can enable the accuracy of AI / ML prediction to be adjusted in a dynamic way without switching the AI / ML model offline for retraining. In practice, different services may have different accuracy requirements. By using the proposed solutions, the AI / ML prediction may be applicable for different services without any interaction from the life cycle management (LCM) aspect. Various exemplary embodiments according to the proposed solutions may be applicable to the temporal domain, the spatial domain and / or the frequency domain, e.g., in an AI mobility scenario as discussed in 3GPP. According to exemplary embodiments, a NW or a network node can configure a UE with a M-to-P pattern adaptive to the service requirements. This can enable the NW to optimize the configuration and / or allocation of measurement gaps, e.g., according to the UE’s capability in performing partial measurement and prediction. In addition, the exemplary embodiments according to the proposed solutions can enable the NW to allocate radio resources for actual data transmission instead of the measurement gaps (for inter-frequency measurement) when the UE is performing the prediction (and not performing the actual measurement) , thereby enhancing network throughput.

[0057] More details of the proposed solutions of the present disclosure will be described below in connection with various exemplary embodiments. It can be appreciated that although some embodiments are described with respect to RRM measurement, various exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure may be applicable to different communication scenarios where the prediction techniques such as AI / ML prediction can be used for different types of measurements.

[0058] The M-to-P pattern as described herein may be applied in different prediction domains such as temporal domain, spatial domain and / or frequency domain. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the M-to-P pattern may be indicated by a binary number, e.g., in the form of “000001” as listed in Table 1 or in other possible ways. As an example, the value “0” in the binary number may indicate an actual RRM measurement occasion at the UE side or the NW side, whereas the value “1” in the binary number may indicate a predicted RRM measurement occasion at the UE side or the NW side (or vice versa) . Therefore, the binary number “000001” may be used to indicate that after five actual RRM measurement occasions, there is one predicted RRM measurement occasion. In an embodiment, the binary number “000001” may be regarded as a measurement sequence in which there are five actual measurements followed by one predicted measurement. It can be realized that not only the positional arrangement of actual and predicted measurement occasions but also a ratio between the number of actual measurement (s) and the number of predicted measurement (s) can be indicated by a M-to-P pattern (e.g., which may be represented via a binary number as described above) . According to the requirements of network configurations and application scenarios, the M-to-P pattern may be designed for the measurement prediction in temporal domain, frequency domain and / or spatial domain.

[0059] Fig. 2A is a diagram illustrating exemplary M-to-P patterns in temporal domain according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In use case A of the temporal domain prediction as shown in Fig. 2A, the solid line indicates an actual RRM measurement, while the dash line indicates a predicted RRM measurement. The actual RRM measurement is corresponding to a measurement value obtained by an actual measurement operation, and the predicted RRM measurement is corresponding to a measurement value obtained by a prediction operation. The time window filled with actual RRM measurements is denoted as “measurement window” in Fig. 2A. Similarly, the time window filled with predicted RRM measurements is denoted as “prediction window” in Fig. 2A. In this use case, a M-to-P pattern can reflect a ratio of the number of the actual RRM measurements to the number of the predicted RRM measurements, without specifying a dedicated positional arrangement of the actual RRM measurements and / or the predicted RRM measurements. In an embodiment, all of the predicted RRM measurements may follow all of the actual RRM measurements, e.g., by placing the prediction window after the measurement window. If the prediction accuracy is lower than the target accuracy, the M-to-P pattern can be reconfigured by increasing the ratio of the numbers of actual measurements to predicted measurements. This means that more actual RRM measurements can be obtained while less predicted RRM measurements can be obtained with fine accuracy. On the contrary, if the prediction accuracy is higher than the target accuracy, the M-to-P pattern can be reconfigured by decreasing the ratio of the numbers of actual measurements to predicted measurements, which causing coarser accuracy in the prediction outcome.

[0060] Fig. 2B is a diagram illustrating exemplary M-to-P patterns in temporal domain according to another embodiment of the present disclosure. In use case B of the temporal domain prediction as shown in Fig. 2B, the solid line indicates an actual RRM measurement, while the dash line indicates a predicted RRM measurement. It can be seen that actual RRM measurements and predicted RRM measurements are interleaved. In this use case, a M-to-P pattern may not only reflect a ratio of the number of the actual RRM measurements to the number of the predicted RRM measurements, but also specify a dedicated temporal arrangement of the actual RRM measurements and / or the predicted RRM measurements. If the prediction accuracy is lower than the target accuracy, the M-to-P pattern may be reconfigured by designing an arrangement with denser actual RRM measurements. This means that more actual RRM measurements can be obtained while less predicted RRM measurements can be obtained with fine accuracy. On the contrary, if the prediction accuracy is higher than the target accuracy, the M-to-P pattern can be reconfigured by designing an arrangement with sparser actual RRM measurements, which causing coarser accuracy in the prediction outcome.

[0061] Fig. 2C is a diagram illustrating exemplary M-to-P patterns in spatial domain according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In the spatial domain prediction as shown in Fig. 2C, the solid line indicates an actual RRM measurement at a beam, while the dash line indicates a predicted RRM measurement at another beam. It can be seen that actual RRM measurements and predicted RRM measurements are interleaved. In this use case, a M-to-P pattern may not only reflect a ratio of the number of the actual RRM measurements to the number of the predicted RRM measurements, but also specify a dedicated beam arrangement of the actual RRM measurements and / or the predicted RRM measurements. If the prediction accuracy is lower than the target accuracy, the M-to-P pattern may be reconfigured by designing an arrangement with denser actual RRM measurements. That means that more actual RRM measurements can be obtained while less predicted RRM measurements can be obtained with fine accuracy. On the contrary, if the prediction accuracy is higher than the target accuracy, the M-to-P pattern can be reconfigured by designing an arrangement with sparser actual RRM measurements, which causing coarser accuracy in the prediction outcome.

[0062] Fig. 2D is a diagram illustrating exemplary M-to-P patterns in frequency domain according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In the frequency domain prediction as shown in Fig. 2D, the solid line indicates an actual RRM measurement on a frequency, while the dash line indicates a predicted RRM measurement on another frequency. It can be seen that actual RRM measurements and predicted RRM measurements are interleaved. In this use case, a M-to-P pattern may not only reflect a ratio of the number of the actual RRM measurements to the number of the predicted RRM measurements, but also specify a dedicated frequency arrangement of the actual RRM measurements and / or the predicted RRM measurements. If the predicted accuracy is lower than the target accuracy, the M-to-P may be reconfigured by designing an arrangement with denser actual RRM measurements.

[0063] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, there may be a handshake procedure between a UE and a network node for communicating prediction capability information of the UE. The network node may check with the UE whether the UE supports different M-to-P patterns or not. The UE may reply its capability to the network node. Optionally, the UE may inform the network node of one or more candidate M-to-P patterns supported by the UE, if the UE supports adaptive adjustment of M-to-P pattern. In an embodiment, the M-to-P pattern may be represented by a set of bits where each bit may indicate whether the UE needs to perform actual measurement or prediction in an associated resource instance, e.g., in temporal domain, frequency domain and / or spatial domain. In another embodiment, the M-to-P pattern may be indicated by an index or an indicator of a M-to-P pattern which is known by the UE and the network node.

[0064] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the network node and the UE may exchange indication information about the M-to-P pattern, e.g., information about a time period between two consecutive instances of actual measurements and predictions, including a time period between two consecutive actual measurements and / or a time period between an actual measurement and a prediction, and vice versa. In an embodiment, the indication information about the M-to-P pattern may be different per frequency and may be associated to one or more frequencies for which the M-to-P pattern is available for the UE.

[0065] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, upon receiving the indication information about M-to-P patterns supported by the UE, the network node may select one of the M-to-P patterns supported by the UE and configure the selected M-to-P pattern to the UE, so that the UE can use the selected M-to-P pattern when performing actual measurement and / or performing prediction.

[0066] In accordance with another exemplary embodiment, if the UE has sufficient computing power, the network node may directly inform the accuracy requirement to the UE, e.g., at the initial stage of communication between the network node and the UE, leaving the UE to select a proper M-to-P pattern from the candidate M-to-P patterns by referring to the accuracy requirement.

[0067] According to the M-to-P pattern selected by the UE or the network node, the UE may perform partial measurement with prediction, which means that the UE may perform prediction to obtain some predicted measurements according to the M-to-P pattern, rather than always performing actual measurement to obtain all measurements. Therefore, the UE capable of performing partial measurement with prediction may not need to use measurement gaps (e.g., using measurement gaps so as to tune to a target frequency for inter-frequency measurement) , in case the UE can derive a measurement result by means of prediction instead of executing actual measurement. This can bring better service performance towards the UE because the communication between the UE and the network node may not be interrupted due to frequency (re-) tuning.

[0068] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, a measurement prediction configuration may be linked with a measurement identifier (ID) of a measurement object, so that the network node can indicate a M-to-P pattern associated with the measurement prediction configuration to the UE by indicating a measurement ID of the measurement object.

[0069] Fig. 2E is a diagram illustrating exemplary measurement configuration IE mapping according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 2E, a measurement ID (denoted as “Meas ID” in Fig. 2E) may be linked with a measurement object (denoted as “MeasObj” in Fig. 2E) , a reporting configuration (denoted as “ReportConf” in Fig. 2E) and a measurement prediction configuration (denoted as “PredictConf” in Fig. 2E) . Measurement objects may be used as resources for different measurement IDs, report configurations may be used to control measurement reporting for different measurement IDs, and measurement prediction configurations may be used to indicate M-to-P patterns for different measurement IDs. Then by addressing a Meas ID, the network node and / or the UE can identify the corresponding MeasObj, ReportConf and / or PredictConf, according to a mapping relationship among MeasObj, ReportConf, PredictConf and Meas ID, and handle measurement related operations adaptively. By linking to different PredictConfs, the network node and / or the UE can make prediction on a measurement result in different accuracies based on different M-to-P patterns.

[0070] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the NW may indicate a measurement prediction configuration in an IE or field such as “MeasConfig” , e.g., by setting an IE or field such as “MeasPredictConfig” as below.

[0071] As an example, Table 2 gives descriptions of some exemplary parameters or IEs in the “MeasConfig” field and “MeasPredictConfig” field. Table 2

[0072] It can be appreciated that the names, representations, values and settings of the IEs, fields and parameters used herein are exemplary, and other names, representations, values and settings may also be used to indicate the same or similar information.

[0073] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, if the NW detects that the actual prediction accuracy of the currently used M-to-P pattern is lower than the target prediction accuracy (e.g., the measurement error is higher than a predefined threshold, etc. ) , the NW may select another measurement prediction configuration having a denser M-to-P pattern for measurement (with or without prediction) . For example, the NW may indicate a parameter “M2P-pattern-index” in the field “MeasPredictConfig” of the IE “MeasConfig” , so as to notify the UE of reconfiguration of M-to-P pattern. Similarly, in the case that the actual prediction accuracy of the currently used M-to-P pattern is higher than the target prediction accuracy, the NW may select another measurement prediction configuration having a sparser M-to-P pattern. If the detection of the actual prediction accuracy is executed at the UE side, the UE may request the NW for reconfiguration with a denser / sparser M-to-P pattern. When the NW or the UE detects that the actual prediction accuracy degrades below the target prediction accuracy, the NW or the UE may look into a table such as Table 1 and retrieve an index of a denser M-to-P pattern for reconfiguration. Of course, if the actual prediction accuracy remains at a higher level, e.g., for a certain time duration, the NW or the UE may adopt a sparser M-to-P pattern to reduce configuration and reporting overhead.

[0074] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, a dense M-to-P pattern and a sparse M-to-P pattern are relative and may be designed in temporal domain, spatial domain and / or frequency domain. The NW and / or the UE can adjust the M-to-P pattern in a dynamic way, so that the outcome accuracy from a prediction model such as an AI / ML model may be controlled online to some extent. When a radio resource control (RRC) connection is established between the NW and the UE (e.g., for the first time or for reestablishment after a link failure) , the target prediction accuracy may be indicated by configuration information (e.g., information about a measurement prediction configuration, a report configuration, etc. ) from the NW to the UE. The UE may report a quality monitoring result and optionally a recommended M-to-P pattern to the NW. For the first prediction on the radio link, an initial M-to-P pattern may be configured to the UE by the NW implicitly or explicitly, or may be adopted by the UE autonomously.

[0075] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, an adaptive or configurable adjustment of M-to-P pattern may be implemented when both prediction and performance monitoring are located at the NW side. In this case, neither prediction nor performance monitoring is done at the UE side. Then after the initial handshake is performed between the NW and the UE, if the prediction performance is rather better than expected, a more relax M-to-P pattern (e.g., having a lower ratio of the number of actual RRM measurements to the number of predicted RRM measurements, etc. ) may be adopted in prediction by the NW. In this way, the payload for reporting the actual RRM measurements by the UE can be saved for network performance enhancement.

[0076] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, an adaptive or configurable adjustment of M-to-P pattern may be implemented with NW assistance when prediction performance monitoring is performed at the NW side. For example, if a UE can do prediction but is not able to monitor the prediction performance for some reason, such as due to computation power limitation, the function of prediction performance monitoring may need to be implemented at the NW side rather than the UE side. In an embodiment, the UE may use a preconfigured AI / ML model for a first prediction with a default M-to-P pattern / ratio, which may be selected by the UE or configured to the UE by the NW as the initial M-to-P pattern / ratio. During communication with the UE, the NW can collect actual RRM measurements for performance monitoring, e.g., periodically or semi-periodically or non-periodically. By evaluating the prediction performance for the UE according to the actual RRM measurements and predicted RRM measurements, the NW may optionally feed an evaluation result back to the UE explicitly or implicitly. This means that the NW may transmit feedback like “better” or “worse” to the UE, letting the UE make a judgement of changing the M-to-P pattern to increase a M-to-P ratio (e.g., increasing the number of the actual RRM measurements, etc. ) for a higher accuracy (or to decrease a M-to-P ratio for a lower accuracy) . In another embodiment, the NW may reconfigure another M-to-P pattern directly to the UE. When deciding to change the M-to-P pattern, the UE and / or the NW may reselect a candidate M-to-P pattern regarding to the UE implementation. For example, in case of the inter-frequency prediction, the NW can instruct the UE (or the UE can decide by itself) to stay at the current working frequency while performing prediction for other frequencies. As such, the UE may not have to re-tune frequently to another frequency for prediction. Therefore, the communication interruption during frequency re-tuning may be mitigated, and the reconfiguration overhead also can be saved.

[0077] Fig. 2F is a diagram illustrating exemplary M-to-P patterns for different accuracy requirements according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In the spatial domain prediction as shown in Fig. 2F, the solid line indicates an actual RRM measurement at a beam, while the dash line indicates a predicted RRM measurement at another beam. Similar to Fig. 2C, actual RRM measurements and predicted RRM measurements are interleaved. If a higher accuracy is required for prediction, a M-to-P pattern with tight actual RRM measurements (e.g., denser actual RRM measurements) may be configured for a UE. If a lower accuracy is required for prediction, a M-to-P pattern with relax actual RRM measurements (e.g., sparser actual RRM measurements) may be configured for the UE.

[0078] It can be appreciated that the M-to-P patterns for spatial domain prediction shown in Fig. 2F are just examples, and other types of M-to-P patterns, e.g. those designed for temporal domain prediction and / or frequency domain prediction may also be applicable for adjustment of M-to-P pattern. Figs. 3A-3D are diagrams illustrating exemplary signaling flows for configuring / adjusting M-to-P patterns according to some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0079] In the case of NW controlled adaptive configuration / adjustment of M-to-P pattern, as shown in Fig. 3A, the NW may consider the prediction accuracy requirement for a UE and configure the UE with a default / initial M-to-P pattern. The UE can measure and / or predict a measurement result according to the initial M-to-P pattern configured by the NW, and report one or more actual and / or one or more predicted measurements to the NW. In an embodiment, the NW may check the prediction accuracy periodically or non-periodically or semi-persistently by sending a corresponding accuracy request to the UE, e.g., in an RRC_CONNECTED state. In another embodiment, the UE may be configured to report the prediction accuracy together with the predicted measurements to the NW, or it may be specified that the prediction accuracy is always reported together with the predicted measurements from the UE to the NW, so that no additional request may be needed from the NW to obtain the prediction accuracy. According to the request from the NW or a pre-configuration of accuracy reporting, the UE may implicitly or explicitly report its prediction accuracy or accuracy offset with the currently configured M-to-P pattern to the NW.

[0080] In accordance with another exemplary embodiment, the NW may evaluate a prediction accuracy of a M-to-P pattern and configure the UE with a preferred M-to-P pattern considering a target prediction accuracy. In order to check the prediction accuracy for the predicted measurements of the UE, the NW may configure the UE to report, for one or more occasions of the predicted measurements, both an actual RRM measurement and a predicted RRM measurement. Then the NW may be able to compare the predicted RRM measurement with the actual RRM measurement reported by the UE and calculate the prediction accuracy of the M-to-P pattern currently configured to the UE.

[0081] When receiving the reported prediction accuracy from the UE and / or obtaining the calculated prediction accuracy by the NW itself, the NW may compare such prediction accuracy with a target prediction accuracy. If the NW realizes that the prediction accuracy of the current M-to-P pattern is lower than the target prediction accuracy, the NW may adjust the current M-to-P pattern to a denser M-to-P pattern, and reconfigure this denser M-to-P pattern to the UE. The UE may apply the reconfigured M-to-P pattern immediately and report the new predicted measurements under the reconfigured M-to-P pattern to the NW. In another embodiment, if the prediction accuracy of the current M-to-P pattern remains higher than the target prediction accuracy, e.g., for a certain time duration such as Thigh, the NW may adjust the current M-to-P pattern to a sparser M-to-P pattern, and instruct the UE to perform measurement prediction under the sparser M-to-P pattern. This may be useful especially in the inter-frequency prediction case where a measurement gap is configured from the NW to the UE, and when the M-to-P pattern is configurable, since the UE can predict measurements for another frequency without frequency tuning during the measurement gap, various signaling overhead and resource consumption can be reduced and the throughput enhancement can be achieved due to effective use of resources.

[0082] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, when reconfiguring the M-to-P pattern for the UE, the NW can also configure the UE, e.g., to report both the actual and predicted RRM measurements in one or more predicted RRM measurement occasions according to the reconfigured M-to-P pattern, or to report directly the prediction accuracy of the reconfigured M-to-P pattern. As such, the NW may be able to determine whether the prediction accuracy is improved or not.

[0083] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the NW may change the frequency with which the UE reports the actual and / or predicted RRM measurements. Such change may be determined, e.g., according to one or more of the following factors: - The UE is entering an area with very volatile signal strength, where it may be foreseen that  the measurement prediction accuracy may be lower. - The UE is approaching a mobility area and a higher accuracy of predicted measurements  is needed to ensure that the mobility occurs at the right time and without radio link failures. - The UE is approaching an area where the signal strength does not change rapidly and where  the actual prediction accuracy increases. In this case, the frequency with which the UE reports the actual and / or predicted RRM measurements may decrease.

[0084] In the case of UE-based adaptive configuration / adjustment of M-to-P pattern with NW assistance, as shown in Fig. 3B, the judgement of whether to adjust a M-to-P pattern may reside at the UE side. Similar to the case as described with respect to Fig. 3A, the NW may configure the UE with a default / initial M-to-P pattern (optionally together with a target prediction accuracy) . The UE can measure and / or predict a measurement result according to the initial M-to-P pattern configured by the NW. Then the UE can evaluate the outcome from prediction based on the target prediction accuracy periodically or semi-periodically or non-periodically, e.g., according to a request from the NW or as required by the UE itself. In an embodiment, if the evaluated prediction accuracy is lower than the target prediction accuracy, the UE may request the NW for reconfiguring a denser M-to-P pattern (e.g., with a higher ratio of the number of actual RRM measurements to the number of predicted RRM measurements, etc. ) to the UE. In another embodiment, the NW may reconfigure the denser M-to-P pattern directly to the UE. After receiving the reconfiguration of a new M-to-P pattern, the UE may apply the new M-to-P pattern immediately, and report one or more predicted measurements according to the new M-to-P pattern to the NW. In an embodiment, if the evaluated prediction accuracy remains higher than the target prediction accuracy, e.g., for a certain time duration such as Thigh, the UE may request the NW for reconfiguring a sparser M-to-P pattern (e.g., with a lower ratio of the number of actual RRM measurements to the number of predicted RRM measurements, etc. ) to the UE. This also may be useful especially in the inter-frequency prediction case, as described with respect to Fig. 3A.

[0085] In the case of UE-based adaptive configuration / adjustment of M-to-P pattern without NW assistance, as shown in Fig. 3C, the judgement of whether to adjust a M-to-P pattern may reside at the UE side. Similar to the case as described with respect to Fig. 3B, the NW may configure the UE with a default / initial M-to-P pattern (optionally together with a target prediction accuracy) . The UE may measure and / or predict a measurement result according to the initial M-to-P pattern configured by the NW, e.g., during the RRC_CONNECT state. Then the UE may compare the outcome from prediction with the target prediction accuracy. If the evaluated prediction accuracy is lower than the target prediction accuracy, the UE may select a new M-to-P pattern (e.g., a denser M-to-P pattern) and apply the updated configuration with the new M-to-P pattern immediately, and report one or more predicted measurements according to the new M-to-P pattern to the NW. In an embodiment, the UE may report the new M-to-P pattern and optionally the corresponding prediction accuracy to the NW. If the evaluated prediction accuracy remains higher than the target prediction accuracy, e.g., for a certain time duration such as Thigh, the UE may select a sparser M-to-P pattern to perform prediction, which may reduce signaling overhead and save resources. After updating the M-to-P pattern, the UE may inform the NW of the update of the M-to-P pattern, and optionally report one or more predicted measurements according to the updated M-to-P pattern. In an embodiment, the UE may also inform the NW of the prediction accuracy associated with the updated M-to-P pattern.

[0086] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, a possible mechanism that the UE may use to determine or evaluate the prediction accuracy, which also can be applied to various embodiments based on the UE’s reporting of prediction accuracy, may be that the UE measures and predicts a measurement result for the same measurement occasion according to a M-to-P pattern. Then the UE can compare the actual and predicted measurements and derive the actual prediction accuracy of the M-to-P pattern. If the actual prediction accuracy is lower than the target prediction accuracy, the UE may ask the NW for another M-to-P pattern with denser actual RRM measurements; and if the actual prediction accuracy is higher than the target prediction accuracy, the UE may ask the NW for another M-to-P pattern with sparser actual RRM measurements.

[0087] In the case of UE controlled adaptive configuration / adjustment of M-to-P pattern, as shown in Fig. 3D, the judgement of whether to adjust a M-to-P pattern may be totally handled based on UE implementation. There may be no configuration of the M-to-P pattern from the NW, and the UE may configure a default / initial M-to-P pattern by itself, e.g., according to a target prediction accuracy. The UE may report one or more predicted measurements according to the initial M-to-P pattern to the NW. According to the service requirement for the UE, e.g., the target prediction accuracy indicated by the NW, the UE may adjust the currently used M-to-P pattern to a new M-to-P pattern adaptively. In an embodiment, the UE may report the actual and / or predicted measurements according to the new M-to-P pattern to the NW and optionally indicate the new M-to-P pattern to the NW.

[0088] In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the adjustment of M-to-P pattern by the UE may be observable and / or detectable. If the UE reports a prediction window to the NW, it may be observed that the UE adjusts the M-to-P pattern. In another embodiment, the adjustment of M-to-P pattern may also be observed from the measurement results reported by the UE. The UE may report predicted measurement results and actual measurement results, and the reported measurement results may reflect that the M-to-P pattern is adjusted. Some subsequent action (s) may happen if the UE adopts a new M-to-P pattern. In an embodiment, the UE may report information about the currently used M-to-P pattern to the NW. The NW may use such information, e.g., to reconfigure the UE. For example, the NW may adjust the accuracy requirement for the UE or to modify the measurement prediction configuration. In another embodiment, the NW may request the UE to adjust the M-to-P pattern to match the accuracy requirement better.

[0089] It is noted that some embodiments of the present disclosure are mainly described in relation to 5G / NR specifications being used as non-limiting examples for certain exemplary network configurations and system deployments. As such, the description of exemplary embodiments given herein specifically refers to terminology which is directly related thereto. Such terminology is only used in the context of the presented non-limiting examples and embodiments, and does naturally not limit the present disclosure in any way. Rather, any other system configuration or radio technologies may equally be utilized as long as exemplary embodiments described herein are applicable.

[0090] Fig. 4A is a flowchart illustrating a method 410 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 410 illustrated in Fig. 4A may be performed by a terminal device (e.g., a UE, a MS, a subscriber device, etc. ) or an apparatus communicatively coupled to the terminal device. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the terminal device may be configured to communicate with a network node to obtain network services.

[0141] In the example, the communication system 700 includes a telecommunication network 702 that includes an access network 704, such as a radio access network (RAN) , and a core network 706, which includes one or more core network nodes 708. The access network 704 includes one or more access network nodes, such as network nodes 710A and 710B (one or more of which may be generally referred to as network nodes 710) , or any other similar 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) access nodes or non-3GPP access points. Moreover, as will be appreciated by those of skill in the art, a network node is not necessarily limited to an implementation in which a radio portion and a baseband portion are supplied and integrated by a single vendor. Thus, it will be understood that network nodes include disaggregated implementations or portions thereof. For example, in some embodiments, the telecommunication network 702 includes one or more Open-RAN (ORAN) network nodes. An ORAN network node is a node in the telecommunication network 702 that supports an ORAN specification (e.g., a specification published by the O-RAN Alliance, or any similar organization) and may operate alone or together with other nodes to implement one or more functionalities of any node in the telecommunication network 702, including one or more network nodes 710 and / or core network nodes 708.

[0142] Examples of an ORAN network node include an open radio unit (O-RU) , an open distributed unit (O-DU) , an open central unit (O-CU) , including an O-CU control plane (O-CU-CP) or an O-CU user plane (O-CU-UP) , a RAN intelligent controller (near-real time or non-real time) hosting software or software plug-ins, such as a near-real time control application (e.g., xApp) or a non-real time control application (e.g., rApp) , or any combination thereof (the adjective “open” designating support of an ORAN specification) . The network node may support a specification by, for example, supporting an interface defined by the ORAN specification, such as an A1, F1, W1, E1, E2, X2, Xn interface, an open fronthaul user plane interface, or an open fronthaul management plane interface. Moreover, an ORAN access node may be a logical node in a physical node. Furthermore, an ORAN network node may be implemented in a virtualization environment (described further below) in which one or more network functions are virtualized. For example, the virtualization environment may include an O-Cloud computing platform orchestrated by a Service Management and Orchestration Framework via an O-2 interface defined by the O-RAN Alliance or comparable technologies. The network nodes 710 facilitate direct or indirect connection of user equipment (UE) , such as by connecting UEs 712A, 712B, 712C, and 712D (one or more of which may be generally referred to as UEs 712) to the core network 706 over one or more wireless connections.

[0143] Example wireless communications over a wireless connection include transmitting and / or receiving wireless signals using electromagnetic waves, radio waves, infrared waves, and / or other types of signals suitable for conveying information without the use of wires, cables, or other material conductors. Moreover, in different embodiments, the communication system 700 may include any number of wired or wireless networks, network nodes, UEs, and / or any other components or systems that may facilitate or participate in the communication of data and / or signals whether via wired or wireless connections. The communication system 700 may include and / or interface with any type of communication, telecommunication, data, cellular, radio network, and / or other similar type of system.

[0144] The UEs 712 may be any of a wide variety of communication devices, including wireless devices arranged, configured, and / or operable to communicate wirelessly with the network nodes 710 and other communication devices. Similarly, the network nodes 710 are arranged, capable, configured, and / or operable to communicate directly or indirectly with the UEs 712 and / or with other network nodes or equipment in the telecommunication network 702 to enable and / or provide network access, such as wireless network access, and / or to perform other functions, such as administration in the telecommunication network 702.

[0145] In the depicted example, the core network 706 connects the network nodes 710 to one or more host computing systems, such as host 716. These connections may be direct or indirect via one or more intermediary networks or devices. In other examples, network nodes may be directly coupled to hosts. The core network 706 includes one more core network nodes (e.g., core network node 708) that are structured with hardware and software components. Features of these components may be substantially similar to those described with respect to the UEs, network nodes, and / or hosts, such that the descriptions thereof are generally applicable to the corresponding components of the core network node 708. Example core network nodes include functions of one or more of a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) , Mobility Management Entity (MME) , Home Subscriber Server (HSS) , Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) , Session Management Function (SMF) , Authentication Server Function (AUSF) , Subscription Identifier De-concealing function (SIDF) , Unified Data Management (UDM) , Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP) , Network Exposure Function (NEF) , and / or a User Plane Function (UPF) .

[0146] The host 716 may be under the ownership or control of a service provider other than an operator or provider of the access network 704 and / or the telecommunication network 702. The host 716 may host a variety of applications to provide one or more service. Examples of such applications include live and pre-recorded audio / video content, data collection services such as retrieving and compiling data on various ambient conditions detected by a plurality of UEs, analytics functionality, social media, functions for controlling or otherwise interacting with remote devices, functions for an alarm and surveillance center, or any other such function performed by a server.

[0147] As a whole, the communication system 700 of Fig. 7 enables connectivity between the UEs, network nodes, and hosts. In that sense, the communication system may be configured to operate according to predefined rules or procedures, such as specific standards that include, but are not limited to: Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) ; Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) ; Long Term Evolution (LTE) , and / or other suitable 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G standards, or any applicable future generation standard (e.g., 6G) ; wireless local area network (WLAN) standards, such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standards (WiFi) ; and / or any other appropriate wireless communication standard, such as the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax) , Bluetooth, Z-Wave, Near Field Communication (NFC) ZigBee, LiFi, and / or any low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) standards such as LoRa and Sigfox.

[0148] In some examples, the telecommunication network 702 is a cellular network that implements 3GPP standardized features. Accordingly, the telecommunications network 702 may support network slicing to provide different logical networks to different devices that are connected to the telecommunication network 702. For example, the telecommunications network 702 may provide Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) services to some UEs, while providing Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services to other UEs, and / or Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC)  / Massive IoT services to yet further UEs.

[0149] In some examples, the UEs 712 are configured to transmit and / or receive information without direct human interaction. For instance, a UE may be designed to transmit information to the access network 704 on a predetermined schedule, when triggered by an internal or external event, or in response to requests from the access network 704. Additionally, a UE may be configured for operating in single-or multi-RAT or multi-standard mode. For example, a UE may operate with any one or combination of Wi-Fi, NR (New Radio) and LTE, i.e. being configured for multi-radio dual connectivity (MR-DC) , such as E-UTRAN (Evolved-UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) New Radio –Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) .

[0150] In the example, the hub 714 communicates with the access network 704 to facilitate indirect communication between one or more UEs (e.g., UE 712C and / or 712D) and network nodes (e.g., network node 710B) . In some examples, the hub 714 may be a controller, router, content source and analytics, or any of the other communication devices described herein regarding UEs. For example, the hub 714 may be a broadband router enabling access to the core network 706 for the UEs. As another example, the hub 714 may be a controller that sends commands or instructions to one or more actuators in the UEs. Commands or instructions may be received from the UEs, network nodes 710, or by executable code, script, process, or other instructions in the hub 714. As another example, the hub 714 may be a data collector that acts as temporary storage for UE data and, in some embodiments, may perform analysis or other processing of the data. As another example, the hub 714 may be a content source. For example, for a UE that is a VR device, display, loudspeaker, or other media delivery device, the hub 714 may retrieve VR assets, video, audio, or other media or data related to sensory information via a network node, which the hub 714 then provides to the UE either directly, after performing local processing, and / or after adding additional local content. In still another example, the hub 714 acts as a proxy server or orchestrator for the UEs, in particular if one or more of the UEs are low energy IoT devices.

[0151] The hub 714 may have a constant / persistent or intermittent connection to the network node 710B. The hub 714 may also allow for a different communication scheme and / or schedule between the hub 714 and UEs (e.g., UE 712C and / or 712D) , and between the hub 714 and the core network 706. In other examples, the hub 714 is connected to the core network 706 and / or one or more UEs via a wired connection. Moreover, the hub 714 may be configured to connect to an M2M service provider over the access network 704 and / or to another UE over a direct connection. In some scenarios, UEs may establish a wireless connection with the network nodes 710 while still connected via the hub 714 via a wired or wireless connection. In some embodiments, the hub 714 may be a dedicated hub –that is, a hub whose primary function is to route communications to / from the UEs from / to the network node 710B. In other embodiments, the hub 714 may be a non-dedicated hub –that is, a device which is capable of operating to route communications between the UEs and network node 710B, but which is additionally capable of operating as a communication start and / or end point for certain data channels.

[0152] Fig. 8 shows a UE 800 in accordance with some embodiments. The UE 800 presents additional details of some embodiments of the UE 712 of Fig. 7. As used herein, a UE refers to a device capable, configured, arranged and / or operable to communicate wirelessly with network nodes and / or other UEs. Examples of a UE include, but are not limited to, a smart phone, mobile phone, cell phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phone, wireless local loop phone, desktop computer, personal digital assistant (PDA) , wireless cameras, gaming console or device, music storage / playback device, wearable terminal device, wireless endpoint, mobile station, tablet, laptop, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , an Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR) device, wireless customer-premise equipment (CPE) , vehicle, vehicle-mounted or vehicle embedded / integrated wireless device, etc. Other examples include any UE identified by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) , including a narrow band internet of things (NB-IoT) UE, a machine type communication (MTC) UE, and / or an enhanced MTC (eMTC) UE.

[0155] The processing circuitry 802 is configured to process instructions and data and may be configured to implement any sequential state machine operative to execute instructions stored as machine-readable computer programs in the memory 810. The processing circuitry 802 may be implemented as one or more hardware-implemented state machines (e.g., in discrete logic, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) , application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) , etc. ) ; programmable logic together with appropriate firmware; one or more stored computer programs, general-purpose processors, such as a microprocessor or digital signal processor (DSP) , together with appropriate software; or any combination of the above. For example, the processing circuitry 802 may include multiple central processing units (CPUs) .

[0156] In the example, the input / output interface 806 may be configured to provide an interface or interfaces to an input device, output device, or one or more input and / or output devices. Examples of an output device include a speaker, a sound card, a video card, a display, a monitor, a printer, an actuator, an emitter, a smartcard, another output device, or any combination thereof. An input device may allow a user to capture information into the UE 800. Examples of an input device include a touch-sensitive or presence-sensitive display, a camera (e.g., a digital camera, a digital video camera, a web camera, etc. ) , a microphone, a sensor, a mouse, a trackball, a directional pad, a trackpad, a scroll wheel, a smartcard, and the like. The presence-sensitive display may include a capacitive or resistive touch sensor to sense input from a user. A sensor may be, for instance, an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a tilt sensor, a force sensor, a magnetometer, an optical sensor, a proximity sensor, a biometric sensor, etc., or any combination thereof. An output device may use the same type of interface port as an input device. For example, a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port may be used to provide an input device and an output device.

[0157] In some embodiments, the power source 808 is structured as a battery or battery pack. Other types of power sources, such as an external power source (e.g., an electricity outlet) , photovoltaic device, or power cell, may be used. The power source 808 may further include power circuitry for delivering power from the power source 808 itself, and / or an external power source, to the various parts of the UE 800 via input circuitry or an interface such as an electrical power cable. Delivering power may be, for example, for charging of the power source 808. Power circuitry may perform any formatting, converting, or other modification to the power from the power source 808 to make the power suitable for the respective components of the UE 800 to which power is supplied.

[0160] The processing circuitry 802 may be configured to communicate with an access network or other network using the communication interface 812. The communication interface 812 may comprise one or more communication subsystems and may include or be communicatively coupled to an antenna 822. The communication interface 812 may include one or more transceivers used to communicate, such as by communicating with one or more remote transceivers of another device capable of wireless communication (e.g., another UE or a network node in an access network) . Each transceiver may include a transmitter 818 and / or a receiver 820 appropriate to provide network communications (e.g., optical, electrical, frequency allocations, and so forth) . Moreover, the transmitter 818 and receiver 820 may be coupled to one or more antennas (e.g., antenna 822) and may share circuit components, software or firmware, or alternatively be implemented separately.

[0161] In the illustrated embodiment, communication functions of the communication interface 812 may include cellular communication, Wi-Fi communication, LPWAN communication, data communication, voice communication, multimedia communication, short-range communications such as Bluetooth, near-field communication, location-based communication such as the use of the global positioning system (GPS) to determine a location, another like communication function, or any combination thereof. Communications may be implemented in according to one or more communication protocols and / or standards, such as IEEE 802.11, Code Division Multiplexing Access (CDMA) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , GSM, LTE, New Radio (NR) , UMTS, WiMax, Ethernet, transmission control protocol / internet protocol (TCP / IP) , synchronous optical networking (SONET) , Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) , QUIC, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) , and so forth.

[0162] Regardless of the type of sensor, a UE may provide an output of data captured by its sensors, through its communication interface 812, via a wireless connection to a network node. Data captured by sensors of a UE can be communicated through a wireless connection to a network node via another UE. The output may be periodic (e.g., once every 15 minutes if it reports the sensed temperature) , random (e.g., to even out the load from reporting from several sensors) , in response to a triggering event (e.g., when moisture is detected an alert is sent) , in response to a request (e.g., a user initiated request) , or a continuous stream (e.g., a live video feed of a patient) .

[0163] As another example, a UE comprises an actuator, a motor, or a switch, related to a communication interface configured to receive wireless input from a network node via a wireless connection. In response to the received wireless input the states of the actuator, the motor, or the switch may change. For example, the UE may comprise a motor that adjusts the control surfaces or rotors of a drone in flight according to the received input or to a robotic arm performing a medical procedure according to the received input.

[0164] A UE, when in the form of an Internet of Things (IoT) device, may be a device for use in one or more application domains, these domains comprising, but not limited to, city wearable technology, extended industrial application and healthcare. Non-limiting examples of such an IoT device are a device which is or which is embedded in: a connected refrigerator or freezer, a TV, a connected lighting device, an electricity meter, a robot vacuum cleaner, a voice controlled smart speaker, a home security camera, a motion detector, a thermostat, a smoke detector, a door / window sensor, a flood / moisture sensor, an electrical door lock, a connected doorbell, an air conditioning system like a heat pump, an autonomous vehicle, a surveillance system, a weather monitoring device, a vehicle parking monitoring device, an electric vehicle charging station, a smart watch, a fitness tracker, a wearable for tactile augmentation or sensory enhancement, a water sprinkler, an animal-or item-tracking device, a sensor for monitoring a plant or animal, an industrial robot, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) , and any kind of medical device, like a heart rate monitor or a remote controlled surgical robot. A UE in the form of an IoT device comprises circuitry and / or software in dependence of the intended application of the IoT device in addition to other components as described in relation to the UE 800 shown in Fig. 8.

[0165] As yet another specific example, in an IoT scenario, a UE may represent a machine or other device that performs monitoring and / or measurements, and transmits the results of such monitoring and / or measurements to another UE and / or a network node. The UE may in this case be an M2M device, which may in a 3GPP context be referred to as an MTC device. As one particular example, the UE may implement the 3GPP NB-IoT standard. In other scenarios, a UE may represent a vehicle, such as a car, a bus, a truck, a ship and an airplane, or other equipment that is capable of monitoring and / or reporting on its operational status or other functions associated with its operation.

[0166] In practice, any number of UEs may be used together with respect to a single use case. For example, a first UE might be or be integrated in a drone and provide the drone’s speed information (obtained through a speed sensor) to a second UE that is a remote controller operating the drone. When the user makes changes from the remote controller, the first UE may adjust the throttle on the drone (e.g. by controlling an actuator) to increase or decrease the drone’s speed. The first and / or the second UE can also include more than one of the functionalities described above. For example, a UE might comprise the sensor and the actuator, and handle communication of data for both the speed sensor and the actuators.

[0167] Fig. 9 shows a network node 900 in accordance with some embodiments. As used herein, network node refers to equipment capable, configured, arranged and / or operable to communicate directly or indirectly with a UE and / or with other network nodes or equipment, in a telecommunication network. Examples of network nodes include, but are not limited to, access points (APs) (e.g., radio access points) , base stations (BSs) (e.g., radio base stations, Node Bs, evolved Node Bs (eNBs) and NR NodeBs (gNBs) ) , O-RAN nodes or components of an O-RAN node (e.g., O-RU, O-DU, O-CU) .

[0168] Base stations may be categorized based on the amount of coverage they provide (or, stated differently, their transmit power level) and so, depending on the provided amount of coverage, may be referred to as femto base stations, pico base stations, micro base stations, or macro base stations. A base station may be a relay node or a relay donor node controlling a relay. A network node may also include one or more (or all) parts of a distributed radio base station such as centralized digital units, distributed units (e.g., in an O-RAN access node) and / or remote radio units (RRUs) , sometimes referred to as Remote Radio Heads (RRHs) . Such remote radio units may or may not be integrated with an antenna as an antenna integrated radio. Parts of a distributed radio base station may also be referred to as nodes in a distributed antenna system (DAS) .

[0172] In some embodiments, the processing circuitry 902 includes a system on a chip (SOC) . In some embodiments, the processing circuitry 902 includes one or more of radio frequency (RF) transceiver circuitry 912 and baseband processing circuitry 914. In some embodiments, the radio frequency (RF) transceiver circuitry 912 and the baseband processing circuitry 914 may be on separate chips (or sets of chips) , boards, or units, such as radio units and digital units. In alternative embodiments, part or all of RF transceiver circuitry 912 and baseband processing circuitry 914 may be on the same chip or set of chips, boards, or units.

[0173] The memory 904 may comprise any form of volatile or non-volatile computer-readable memory including, without limitation, persistent storage, solid-state memory, remotely mounted memory, magnetic media, optical media, random access memory (RAM) , read-only memory (ROM) , mass storage media (for example, a hard disk) , removable storage media (for example, a flash drive, a Compact Disk (CD) or a Digital Video Disk (DVD) ) , and / or any other volatile or non-volatile, non-transitory device-readable and / or computer-executable memory devices that store information, data, and / or instructions that may be used by the processing circuitry 902. The memory 904 may store any suitable instructions, data, or information, including a computer program, software, an application including one or more of logic, rules, code, tables, and / or other instructions capable of being executed by the processing circuitry 902 and utilized by the network node 900. The memory 904 may be used to store any calculations made by the processing circuitry 902 and / or any data received via the communication interface 906. In some embodiments, the processing circuitry 902 and memory 904 is integrated.

[0174] The communication interface 906 is used in wired or wireless communication of signaling and / or data between a network node, access network, and / or UE. As illustrated, the communication interface 906 comprises port (s)  / terminal (s) 916 to send and receive data, for example to and from a network over a wired connection. The communication interface 906 also includes radio front-end circuitry 918 that may be coupled to, or in certain embodiments a part of, the antenna 910. Radio front-end circuitry 918 comprises filters 920 and amplifiers 922. The radio front-end circuitry 918 may be connected to an antenna 910 and processing circuitry 902. The radio front-end circuitry may be configured to condition signals communicated between antenna 910 and processing circuitry 902. The radio front-end circuitry 918 may receive digital data that is to be sent out to other network nodes or UEs via a wireless connection. The radio front-end circuitry 918 may convert the digital data into a radio signal having the appropriate channel and bandwidth parameters using a combination of filters 920 and / or amplifiers 922. The radio signal may then be transmitted via the antenna 910. Similarly, when receiving data, the antenna 910 may collect radio signals which are then converted into digital data by the radio front-end circuitry 918. The digital data may be passed to the processing circuitry 902. In other embodiments, the communication interface may comprise different components and / or different combinations of components.

[0175] In certain alternative embodiments, the network node 900 does not include separate radio front-end circuitry 918, instead, the processing circuitry 902 includes radio front-end circuitry and is connected to the antenna 910. Similarly, in some embodiments, all or some of the RF transceiver circuitry 912 is part of the communication interface 906. In still other embodiments, the communication interface 906 includes one or more ports or terminals 916, the radio front-end circuitry 918, and the RF transceiver circuitry 912, as part of a radio unit (not shown) , and the communication interface 906 communicates with the baseband processing circuitry 914, which is part of a digital unit (not shown) .

[0176] The antenna 910 may include one or more antennas, or antenna arrays, configured to send and / or receive wireless signals. The antenna 910 may be coupled to the radio front-end circuitry 918 and may be any type of antenna capable of transmitting and receiving data and / or signals wirelessly. In certain embodiments, the antenna 910 is separate from the network node 900 and connectable to the network node 900 through an interface or port.

[0177] The antenna 910, communication interface 906, and / or the processing circuitry 902 may be configured to perform any receiving operations and / or certain obtaining operations described herein as being performed by the network node. Any information, data and / or signals may be received from a UE, another network node and / or any other network equipment. Similarly, the antenna 910, the communication interface 906, and / or the processing circuitry 902 may be configured to perform any transmitting operations described herein as being performed by the network node. Any information, data and / or signals may be transmitted to a UE, another network node and / or any other network equipment.

[0178] The power source 908 provides power to the various components of network node 900 in a form suitable for the respective components (e.g., at a voltage and current level needed for each respective component) . The power source 908 may further comprise, or be coupled to, power management circuitry to supply the components of the network node 900 with power for performing the functionality described herein. For example, the network node 900 may be connectable to an external power source (e.g., the power grid, an electricity outlet) via an input circuitry or interface such as an electrical cable, whereby the external power source supplies power to power circuitry of the power source 908. As a further example, the power source 908 may comprise a source of power in the form of a battery or battery pack which is connected to, or integrated in, power circuitry. The battery may provide backup power should the external power source fail.

[0179] Embodiments of the network node 900 may include additional components beyond those shown in Fig. 9 for providing certain aspects of the network node’s functionality, including any of the functionality described herein and / or any functionality necessary to support the subject matter described herein. For example, the network node 900 may include user interface equipment to allow input of information into the network node 900 and to allow output of information from the network node 900. This may allow a user to perform diagnostic, maintenance, repair, and other administrative functions for the network node 900. In some embodiments providing a core network node, such as core network node 708 of Fig. 7, some components, such as the radio front-end circuitry 918 and the RF transceiver circuitry 912 may be omitted.

[0180] Fig. 10 is a block diagram illustrating a virtualization environment 1000 in which functions implemented by some embodiments may be virtualized. In the present context, virtualizing means creating virtual versions of apparatuses or devices which may include virtualizing hardware platforms, storage devices and networking resources. As used herein, virtualization can be applied to any device described herein, or components thereof, and relates to an implementation in which at least a portion of the functionality is implemented as one or more virtual components. Some or all of the functions described herein may be implemented as virtual components executed by one or more virtual machines (VMs) implemented in one or more virtual environments 1000 hosted by one or more of hardware nodes, such as a hardware computing device that operates as a network node, UE, core network node, or host. Further, in embodiments in which the virtual node does not require radio connectivity (e.g., a core network node or host) , then the node may be entirely virtualized. In some embodiments, the virtualization environment 1000 includes components defined by the O-RAN Alliance, such as an O-Cloud environment orchestrated by a Service Management and Orchestration Framework via an O-2 interface. Virtualization may facilitate distributed implementations of a network node, UE, core network node, or host.

[0181] Applications 1002 (which may alternatively be called software instances, virtual appliances, network functions, virtual nodes, virtual network functions, etc. ) are run in the virtualization environment 1000 to implement some of the features, functions, and / or benefits of some of the embodiments disclosed herein.

[0182] Hardware 1004 includes processing circuitry, memory that stores software and / or instructions executable by hardware processing circuitry, and / or other hardware devices as described herein, such as a network interface, input / output interface, and so forth. Software may be executed by the processing circuitry to instantiate one or more virtualization layers 1006 (also referred to as hypervisors or virtual machine monitors (VMMs) ) , provide VMs 1008A and 1008B (one or more of which may be generally referred to as VMs 1008) , and / or perform any of the functions, features and / or benefits described in relation with some embodiments described herein. The virtualization layer 1006 may present a virtual operating platform that appears like networking hardware to the VMs 1008.

[0183] The VMs 1008 comprise virtual processing, virtual memory, virtual networking or interface and virtual storage, and may be run by a corresponding virtualization layer 1006. Different embodiments of the instance of a virtual appliance 1002 may be implemented on one or more of VMs 1008, and the implementations may be made in different ways. Virtualization of the hardware is in some contexts referred to as network function virtualization (NFV) . NFV may be used to consolidate many network equipment types onto industry standard high volume server hardware, physical switches, and physical storage, which can be located in data centers, and customer premise equipment.

[0184] In the context of NFV, a VM 1008 may be a software implementation of a physical machine that runs programs as if they were executing on a physical, non-virtualized machine. Each of the VMs 1008, and that part of hardware 1004 that executes that VM, be it hardware dedicated to that VM and / or hardware shared by that VM with others of the VMs, forms separate virtual network elements. Still in the context of NFV, a virtual network function is responsible for handling specific network functions that run in one or more VMs 1008 on top of the hardware 1004 and corresponds to the application 1002.

[0185] Hardware 1004 may be implemented in a standalone network node with generic or specific components. Hardware 1004 may implement some functions via virtualization. Alternatively, hardware 1004 may be part of a larger cluster of hardware (e.g. such as in a data center or CPE) where many hardware nodes work together and are managed via management and orchestration 1010, which, among others, oversees lifecycle management of applications 1002. In some embodiments, hardware 1004 is coupled to one or more radio units that each include one or more transmitters and one or more receivers that may be coupled to one or more antennas. Radio units may communicate directly with other hardware nodes via one or more appropriate network interfaces and may be used in combination with the virtual components to provide a virtual node with radio capabilities, such as a radio access node or a base station. In some embodiments, some signaling can be provided with the use of a control system 1012 which may alternatively be used for communication between hardware nodes and radio units.

[0186] Although the computing devices described herein (e.g., UEs, network nodes) may include the illustrated combination of hardware components, other embodiments may comprise computing devices with different combinations of components. It is to be understood that these computing devices may comprise any suitable combination of hardware and / or software needed to perform the tasks, features, functions and methods disclosed herein. Determining, calculating, obtaining or similar operations described herein may be performed by processing circuitry, which may process information by, for example, converting the obtained information into other information, comparing the obtained information or converted information to information stored in the network node, and / or performing one or more operations based on the obtained information or converted information, and as a result of said processing making a determination. Moreover, while components are depicted as single boxes located within a larger box, or nested within multiple boxes, in practice, computing devices may comprise multiple different physical components that make up a single illustrated component, and functionality may be partitioned between separate components. For example, a communication interface may be configured to include any of the components described herein, and / or the functionality of the components may be partitioned between the processing circuitry and the communication interface. In another example, non-computationally intensive functions of any of such components may be implemented in software or firmware and computationally intensive functions may be implemented in hardware.

[0187] In certain embodiments, some or all of the functionality described herein may be provided by processing circuitry executing instructions stored on in memory, which in certain embodiments may be a computer program product in the form of a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium. In alternative embodiments, some or all of the functionality may be provided by the processing circuitry without executing instructions stored on a separate or discrete device-readable storage medium, such as in a hard-wired manner. In any of those particular embodiments, whether executing instructions stored on a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium or not, the processing circuitry can be configured to perform the described functionality. The benefits provided by such functionality are not limited to the processing circuitry alone or to other components of the computing device, but are enjoyed by the computing device as a whole, and / or by end users and a wireless network generally.

[0188] In general, the various exemplary embodiments may be implemented in hardware or special purpose chips, circuits, software, logic or any combination thereof. For example, some aspects may be implemented in hardware, while other aspects may be implemented in firmware or software which may be executed by a controller, microprocessor or other computing device, although the disclosure is not limited thereto. While various aspects of the exemplary embodiments of this disclosure may be illustrated and described as block diagrams, flow charts, or using some other pictorial representation, it is well understood that these blocks, apparatus, systems, techniques or methods described herein may be implemented in, as non-limiting examples, hardware, software, firmware, special purpose circuits or logic, general purpose hardware or controller or other computing devices, or some combination thereof.
