[0072] Some example embodiments will now be described in more detail hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which some, but not all embodiments are shown. Indeed, the example embodiments may take many different forms and should not be construed as fixed to the embodiments set forth herein; rather, these embodiments are provided so that this disclosure will satisfy applicable legal requirements. Like reference numerals refer to like elements throughout.

[0073] References in the present disclosure to “one embodiment” , “an embodiment” , “an example embodiment” , and the like indicate that the embodiment described may include a particular feature, structure, or characteristic, but it is not necessary that every embodiment includes the particular feature, structure, or characteristic. Moreover, such phrases are not necessarily referring to the same embodiment. Further, when a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is described in connection with an example embodiment, it is submitted that it is within the knowledge of one skilled in the art to affect such feature, structure, or characteristic in connection with other embodiments whether or not explicitly described.

[0074] In the following description and claims, unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skills in the art to which this disclosure belongs.

[0075] As used herein, the terms “data, ” “content, ” “information, ” and similar terms may be used interchangeably to refer to data capable of being transmitted, received and / or stored in accordance with embodiments of the present invention. Thus, use of any such terms should not be taken to limit the spirit and scope of embodiments of the present invention.

[0076] As used in this application, the term “circuitry” may refer to one or more or all of the following:

[0077] (a) hardware-only circuit implementations (such as implementations in only analog and / or digital circuitry) and

[0078] (b) combinations of hardware circuits and software, such as (as applicable) :

[0079] (i) a combination of analog and / or digital hardware circuit (s) with software / firmware and

[0080] (ii) any portions of hardware processor (s) with software (including digital signal processor (s) ) , software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a mobile phone or server, to perform various functions) and

[0081] (c) hardware circuit (s) and or processor (s) , such as a microprocessor (s) or a portion of a microprocessor (s) , that requires software (e.g., firmware) for operation, but the software may not be present when it is not needed for operation.

[0082] This definition of “circuitry” applies to all uses of this term in this application, including in any claims. As a further example, as used in this application, the term “circuitry” also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (or multiple processors) or portion of a hardware circuit or processor and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware. The term “circuitry” also covers, for example and if applicable to the particular claim element, a baseband  integrated circuit or processor integrated circuit for a mobile device or a similar integrated circuit in server, a cellular network device, or other computing or network device.

[0083] As defined herein, a “computer-readable storage medium, ” which refers to a non-transitory physical storage medium (e.g., volatile or non-volatile memory device) , can be differentiated from a “computer-readable transmission medium, ” which refers to an electromagnetic signal. Such a medium may take many forms, including, but not limited to a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium (e.g., non-volatile media, volatile media) , and transmission media. Transmission media include, for example, coaxial cables, copper wire, fiber optic cables, and carrier waves that travel through space without wires or cables, such as acoustic waves and electromagnetic waves, including radio, optical and infrared waves. Signals include man-made transient variations in amplitude, frequency, phase, polarization or other physical properties transmitted through the transmission media. Examples of non-transitory computer-readable media include a magnetic computer readable medium (e.g., a floppy disk, hard disk, magnetic tape, any other magnetic medium) , an optical computer readable medium (e.g., a compact disc read only memory (CD-ROM) , a digital versatile disc (DVD) , a Blu-Ray disc, or the like) , a random access memory (RAM) , a programmable read only memory (PROM) , an erasable programmable read only memory (EPROM) , a FLASH-EPROM, or any other non-transitory medium from which a computer can read. The term computer-readable storage medium is used herein to refer to any computer-readable medium except transmission media. However, it will be appreciated that where embodiments are described to use a computer-readable storage medium, other types of computer-readable mediums may be substituted for or used in addition to the computer-readable storage medium in alternative embodiments.

[0084] In the following, certain embodiments are explained with reference to cellular communication terminals (or user equipment (UE) or terminal device) capable of cellular communication on a radio access, via cells, base stations, WiFi access point or similar wireless transmitter and / or receiver nodes, providing access points for a radio access system. The radio access system can be arranged to allow mobile communication network connections established between a UE and a core network or a network entity of the core network. The radio access system may be a 3GPP access system, or a non-3GPP access system.

[0085] The cellular communication terminal or UE or terminal device may comprise any suitable device capable of at least receiving cellular communication of data. For example, the cellular communication terminal or UE can be handheld data processing device equipped with radio receiver, data processing and user interface apparatus. Non-limiting examples include a mobile station (MS) such as a mobile phone or what is known as a “smart phone” , a portable computer such as a laptop or a tablet computer provided with a wireless interface card or other wireless interface facility, personal  data assistant (PDA) provided with wireless communication capabilities, or any combinations of these or the like. Further examples include wearable wireless devices such as those integrated with watches or smart watches, eyewear, helmets, hats, clothing, ear pieces with cellular connectivity, jewelry and so on, universal serial bus (USB) sticks with cellular capabilities, modem data cards, machine type devices or any combinations of these or the like.

[0086] As described above, certain scenarios were agreed considering different on-demand SSB cases. Those identified scenarios and cases are as follows. In particular, two cases were considered for on-demand SSB SCell operation: Case 1 assumes there is no regular or always-ON SSB transmission in the SCell and only on-demand SSBs may be triggered from time to time. Case 2 assumes there is always-ON SSB transmission in the SCell and on-demand SSBs may be triggered additionally. FIG. 1 illustrates Case 1: No SSBs (i.e., always-ON SSBs) are transmitted on the SCell except on-demand SSBs and also illustrates Case 2: there is always-ON SSBs being transmitted on the SCell in addition to on-demand SSBs.

[0087] Some solutions have been proposed for example for reducing the SCell activation delay. For example, in Release 18 (Rel-18) , the SCell activation triggered L3 reporting solution was introduced to reduce the SCell activation delay for activating an unknown SCell as specified in TS 38.133 clause 8.3.17. The idea is to allow the UE to send a L3 measurement reporting immediately after receiving  SCell activation command if there is any valid L3 measurement result at the time of SCell activation, but it is based on legacy always-ON SSBs without considering on-demand SSBs. Another solution is to trigger the on-demand SSB transmission by adding the SCell, and the on-demand SSBs will be transmitted at least for a given time period afterwards. Although those solutions target enhancing the network energy saving in effective way, however, further optimization may be needed in different case and scenario combination to reduce SCell activation delay.

[0088] In NR –as in LTE, an SCell can be activated or deactivated. The transitions between activated and deactivated status are mainly based on MAC control elements commands from the network e.g. the SCell activation / deactivation command. When the UE activates a deactivated SCell, it takes time i.e. activation delay Tactivation_time to transition the SCell from deactivated to activated status. It has been defined the SCell activation delay requirements within which the UE shall be able to activate a deactivated SCell, upon receiving SCell activation command in slot n, no later than in slot in 3GPP TS 38.133 clause 8.3.2.

[0089] The SCell activation delay may be determined based on some conditions for the SCell, e.g. known / unknown, FR1 / FR2, measurement period, intra-band / inter-band carrier aggregation etc. In particular, the known / unknown condition may be defined based on if the UE has sent a valid measurement reporting within a time period before receiving SCell activation command as cited below. This will determine the activation steps to be performed by a UE when receiving the SCell activation command. For instance, if the SCell is known, the UE is considered having measured the SCell hence it is able to activate the SCell very fast e.g. with only fine time tracking (FTT) . Otherwise, i.e., when SCell is unknown, the UE needs to monitor the SCell for e.g. automatic gain control (AGC) , time / frequency synchronization, fine time tracking and beam measurement etc. to activate the SCell, which leads to very long SCell activation delay.

[0090] TS 38.133 v18.5.0 clause 8.3.2:

[0091] For the first SCell activation in FR2 bands, the SCell is known if it has been meeting the following conditions:

[0092] -During the period equal to 4s for UE supporting power class 1 / 5 and 3s for UE supporting power class 2 / 3 / 4 before UE receives the last activation command for PDCCH TCI, PDSCH TCI (when applicable) and semi-persistent CSI-RS for CQI reporting (when applicable) :

[0093] -the UE has sent a valid L3-RSRP measurement report with SSB index, and

[0094] -SCell activation command is received after L3-RSRP reporting and no later than the time when UE receives MAC-CE command for TCI activation

[0095] -During the period from L3-RSRP reporting to the valid CQI reporting, the reported SSBs with indexes remain detectable according to the cell identification conditions specified in clauses 9.2 and 9.3, and the TCI state is selected based on one of the latest reported SSB indexes.

[0096] Otherwise, the first SCell in FR2 band is unknown.

[0097] As described above, in Rel-18, the UE is allowed to send a L3 measurement reporting immediately after receiving SCell activation command if there is any valid L3 measurement result at the time of SCell activation. With this L3 report, the network is able to determine TCI and SCell is activated afterwards as if it is known. However, even though the L3 report based solution was introduced, this might not be used if the UE does not have a valid measurement result to report.

[0098] Also as discussed above, different scenarios are being discussed in RAN1 based on when the on-demand SSB transmission is triggered, wherein it is possible the on-demand SSB transmission is triggered some time after SCell activation command i.e. Scenario 3A as mentioned above. As exampled in FIG. 2, the UE may receive SCell activation command at T1 but the on-demand SSB transmission may be activated or triggered by a dedicated signaling at T2 e.g. an OD-SSB activation command or an OD-SSB indication signaling. According to the legacy known / unknown condition above, the SCell is considered as unknown if the UE has not sent any measurement reporting before receiving SCell activation command i.e. T1.

[0099] The present disclosure considers the UE may keep measuring the always-ON SSBs before OD-SSBs are activated hence may turn the SCell from unknown to known so that SCell activation delay can be reduced. The always-ON SSBs after SCell activation command may be used to facilitate the SCell activation. In other words, the present disclosure considers the OD-SSB dedicated signaling (e.g., an OD-SSB indication signaling, which may be also called as an OD-SSB activation signaling or OD-SSB indication or OD-SSB activation, and these terms may be used interchangeably in the present disclosure) may be transmitted some time after the reception of the SCell activation command, and then proposes the UE activating the SCell using OD-SSBs by additionally considering the measurement and / or the measurement reporting status between receiving the SCell activation command and the OD-SSB indication signaling (i.e. between T1 and T2 as above) .

[0100] As a consequence, the example embodiments of the present disclosure propose improved solutions / mechanisms for the reduction of SCell activation delay with on-demand SSBs together with performing cell measurements based on always-ON SSBs so as to enhance the network energy saving.

[0101] More specifically, in order to reduce the SCell activation delay, a method or means is proposed to allow the UE keeps performing e.g. the L3 measurements based on always-ON SSBs after receiving SCell activation command. Optionally, the UE may keep performing e.g. the L3 measurements based on always-ON SSBs after receiving SCell activation command only if there is no valid measurement  result available upon reception of SCell activation command. In particular, the measurement shall last at least until the UE acquires a valid L3 measurement result, or the UE sends a valid L3 measurement reporting or the UE receives the OD-SSB indication signaling whichever comes first.

[0102] For an unknown SCell, as the SCell has not been reported with a valid L3 measurement reporting (i.e., unknown) before receiving SCell activation command, the UE would need to first detect the cell and then measure SSBs to perform AGC and acquire time / frequency synchronization and the beam information etc. The legacy SCell activation delay for unknown SCell would apply which is much longer than activating a known SCell. The proposed method or means will particularly apply if the SCell to be activated is unknown.

[0103] Hereinafter, the example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail with reference to FIGs. 3-10.

[0104] The operations of the methods and associated apparatuses according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure can be realized in 5G New Radio (NR) system, or beyond 5G such as 6G system, as well as other existing and future communication systems.

[0105] FIG. 3 is a flow chart depicting a method performed by a terminal device according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process of the method may involve a terminal device such as a UE and a network node such as a base station (e.g. a gNB) or a cell. The steps of the method may be performed by a terminal device. The network node may be operable to provide a first cell as a primary cell, which for example may specifically comprise a primary cell (PCell) or a primary secondary cell (PSCell) ; and at least one second cell as a SCell, which may accordingly comprise e.g. a SCell or a PSCell. The terminal device can be served by both PCell and SCell. In this example, the terminal device is initially being served by the first cell, e.g., a PCell or a PSCell.

[0106] In the description hereafter, discussions are made taking an example of a to-be-activated SCell.

[0107] As shown in FIG. 3, at block 302, the terminal device receives a first message for activating a second cell (i.e., a SCell to-be-activated) from the network node. The second cell can be configured with a first SSB transmission and a second SSB transmission.

[0108] In some embodiments, the first message may be one of: a RRC message, or a MAC CE message. For example, the first message may be a SCell activation command. Alternatively, the first message may be also a RRC message. As an example, if a RRCReconfiguration message includes Scellstate = “active” , it can also serve as cell activation message.

[0109] In some embodiments, the first SSB transmission may be an always-ON SSB transmission, and the second SSB transmission may be an on-demand-SSB (OD-SSB) transmission.

[0110] In some embodiments, the terminal device may transmit, to the network node, capability information indicating that it supports operations based on the second SSB transmission e.g., capability of supporting OD-SSB based operation. Optionally or additionally, the terminal device may transmit, to the network node, capability information indicating that it supports operations based on the second SSB transmission on top of the first SSB transmission.

[0111] Accordingly, in some embodiments, the terminal device may then receive from the network node configuration information for the second cell. In some embodiments, the configuration information comprises at least a configuration of the first and the second SSB transmission (i.e., the OD-SSB transmission) . Additionally, or alternatively, the configuration information may be received in a configuring message. In some embodiments, the configuring message may be a RRC message. For example, in an embodiment, the configuring message may be a RRCReconfiguration message. As an exemplary embodiment, it may be RRCReconfiguration with “Addition / Configuration” for a SCell or a SCell group.

[0112] Then, at block 304, in response to receiving the first message, the terminal device performs cell measurements on the second cell based on the first SSB transmission, before receiving a second message for triggering the second SSB transmission as shown by block 306 in FIG. 3.

[0113] FIG. 4 illustrates another example method performed by a terminal device according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure in relation to FIG. 3.

[0114] Similar to the step 302 as in FIG. 3, at block 402, the terminal device receives a first message for activating a second cell.

[0115] Then at block 404, in response to receiving the first message, the terminal device checks whether the second cell is known or unknown to the terminal device.

[0116] The terminal device may perform the above checking operation in accordance with the technical specifications mentioned above, e.g., dependent on whether it has a valid cell measurement result and / or transmits a cell measurement report, e.g., a L3-RSRP report. In other words, a SCell can be considered as known if the terminal device has sent a valid measurement reporting within a certain time period before the first message, e.g., SCell activation command. For instance, in some embodiments, the terminal device may determine whether it has transmitted a cell measurement report to the network node or not. Then, in response to the determination that it has transmitted the cell measurement report within a certain time period before the first message, the terminal device may determine that the second cell is the known cell to it. Otherwise, in response to the determination that it has not transmitted the cell measurement report within a certain time period before the first message, the terminal device may determine that the second cell is unknown to it.

[0117] In some embodiments, in response to checking that the second cell is the known cell, the terminal device may perform SCell activation for a known cell, which may be considered as a so-called reduced / simplified known SCell activation, and for instance with only fine time tracking (FTT) . Otherwise, in response to checking that the second cell is unknown, the terminal device may perform SCell activation for an unknown cell, which may be a so-called legacy unknown SCell activation and with automatic gain control (AGC) , time / frequency synchronization, fine time tracking and beam measurement etc.

[0118] Therefore, additionally, in some embodiments, at block 408, the terminal device may further perform SCell activation (so-called reduced / simplified known SCell activation) on the second cell based on the first SSB transmission accordingly in response to checking that the second cell is known.

[0119] Also referring to FIG. 4, at block 406, in response to checking that the second cell is unknown to the terminal device, the terminal device performs cell measurements on the second cell based on the first SSB transmission.

[0120] Then, the terminal device may wait for receiving a second message for triggering the second SSB transmission. Therefore, additionally, in some embodiments, at block 410, the terminal device may receive the second message.

[0121] In some embodiments, the second message may be a message for activating or triggering the second SSB transmission, e.g., an OD-SSB activation command. In some embodiments, the second message may be a message for indicating the second SSB transmission to be transmitted, e.g., an OD-SSB indication signaling. For instance, in some embodiments, the second message may be one of: an RRC message, or a MAC CE message or a DCI signaling. Additionally, or alternatively, the second message may be the same as the first message.

[0122] In some embodiments, the terminal device may perform the measurements on the SCell at least until it acquires a (valid) cell measurement result for the SCell or until it transmits a measurement reporting before receiving the second message.

[0123] Alternatively, the terminal device may perform the measurements until it acquires a cell measurement result for the SCell within a time period before receiving the second message, or until it transmits a valid measurement reporting within a time period before receiving the second message. This can ensure that the measurement result is valid for a certain period of time before receiving the second message.

[0124] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the terminal device may perform the measurements until it receives the second message no matter if it has obtained a valid cell measurement result or transmitted a measurement reporting before receiving the second message.

[0125] Then, after receiving the second message, the terminal device may determine whether the second cell is known or unknown based on the proposed solution, and then perform SCell activation accordingly in details in relation to FIG. 5 as described below. This means that the present disclosure can provide a mechanism which may provide the terminal device with another opportunity to send a cell measurement report. In other words, the present disclosure proposes the terminal device to send L3 measurement reporting (e.g., a L3-RSRP report) after SCell activation command and before / after receiving the OD-SSB indication signaling. With such measurement reporting, the SCell can be activated as if it is known based on the OD-SSBs.

[0126] Now, referring to FIG. 5, which illustrates the determination of whether the second cell is known or unknown in details in relation to the step 410 in FIG. 4. As shown in FIG. 5, at block 412, in response to receiving the second message, the terminal device may determine whether the second cell is known or unknown, given that the second cell (SCell) can be also considered as known if the terminal device has sent a valid meas urement reporting before receiving the second message, e.g., OD-SSB activation / indication. This is different from legacy definition of known / unknown which is defined with reference to the SCell activation command. However, at block 412, the known / unknown is defined with reference to the OD-SSB activation / indication signaling.

[0127] Then based on this determination, the terminal device may perform SCell activation on the second cell based on the second SSB transmission. Similarly, in some embodiments, in response to the determination that the second cell is the known cell, the terminal device may perform SCell activation for a known cell, which may be considered as a so-called reduced / simplified / fast SCell activation, and e.g. with only fine time tracking (FTT) . Otherwise, in response to the determination that the second cell is the unknown cell, the terminal device may perform SCell activation for an unknown cell, which may be a so-called legacy unknown SCell activation and with automatic gain control (AGC) , time / frequency synchronization, fine time tracking and beam measurement etc.

[0128] Referring to FIG. 5, in order to determine whether the second cell is known or unknown, the terminal device may determine whether it has transmitted a cell measurement report (e.g., a L3-RSRP report) to the network node before receiving the second message, as shown by block 502 in FIG. 5.

[0129] In some embodiments, at block 504, the terminal device may determine that the second cell is known and may further perform SCell activation (so-called reduced / simplified / fast SCell activation) on the second cell based on the second SSB transmission accordingly (at block 506) in response to the determination that the terminal device has transmitted the cell measurement report.

[0130] In some embodiments, as shown by block 508 in FIG. 5, in response to the determination that the terminal device has not transmitted the cell measurement report before receiving the second  message, the terminal device may further determine whether it has acquired a cell measurement result for the SCell.

[0131] In some embodiments, in response to the determination that it has acquired the cell measurement result, the terminal device may transmit at block 510 a cell measurement report based on the cell measurement result to the network node. Then at block 512 the second cell can be activated as if it is known, e.g., performing so-called reduced / simplified / fast SCell activation on the second cell based on the second SSB transmission.

[0132] In some embodiments, in response to the determination that it has not acquired the cell measurement result, the terminal device may then determine that the second cell is still unknown to it, and then further perform SCell activation (so-called legacy unknown SCell activation) on the second cell based on the second SSB transmission accordingly, as shown by block 514 in FIG. 5.

[0133] The advantages of the present disclosure are in that it considers the OD-SSB indication signaling may be transmitted some time after the reception of the SCell activation command, and then proposes to employ this time gap / time delay to perform cell measurements, and also proposes the UE activating the SCell using OD-SSBs considering the measurements and / or the measurement reporting status within such time gap / time delay i.e. between receiving the SCell activation command and the OD-SSB indication signaling.

[0134] The present disclosure can especially consider the following identified UE behaviors in relation to FIG. 6 (for Option 1) and FIG. 7 (for Option 2) . The present disclosure may be especially considered as providing two options -changing definition of known / unknown condition, or not changing the definition but changing SCell activation behaviour.

[0135] ·Option 1: UE may measure always-ON SSBs and send a valid L3-reference signal receiving power (RSRP) report before receiving the OD-SSB indication. With a valid measurement report, an SCell can be activated as if it is a known one.

[0136] ·Option 2: UE may measure always-ON SSBs and generate an L3-RSRP report. But UE may not send the report until it receives OD-SSB indication.

[0137] FIG. 6 illustrates another example performed by a terminal device according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0138] Option 1: UE may measure always-ON SSBs and send a valid L3-RSRP report before receiving the OD-SSB indication. With a valid measurement report, an SCell can be considered as known if following the proposed known / unknown condition, or the SCell can be activated as if it is a known one.

[0139] Referring back to FIG. 3, in Option 1, OD-SSB indication may be sent by the PCell at any point after receiving the HARQ-ACK for SCell activation command. OD-SSB indication may be transmitted immediately after receiving HARQ-ACK or at a later stage. After sending HARQ-ACK, UE could start or keep measuring the always-ON SSBs and perform measurements based on always-ON SSBs. Having measured enough always-ON SSB samples, UE may send a valid L3-RSRP measurement report. When the UE has sent a valid L3-RSRP measurement report before receiving the OD-SSB indication, then the unknown SCell becomes to be a known SCell. Hence, by the time the OD-SSB indication is received by the UE, that SCell is a known SCell to the UE. The UE would be able to activate the SCell very fast, e.g. with only fine time tracking.

[0140] As shown in FIG. 6, Option 1 may include the following steps:

[0141] FIG. 7 illustrates another example performed by a terminal device according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0142] Option 2: UE may measure always-ON SSBs and generate an L3-RSRP report, if sufficient amount of SSBs samples have been measured. But UE may not send the L3-RSRP measurement report until it receives the OD-SSB indication e.g. if there is no UL resource available for UE to send the L3-RSRP measurement report before OD-SSB indication.

[0143] In Option 2, UE checks whether OD-SSB indication is received or not. If the OD-SSB indication is received process goes to the SCell activation process. If the OD-SSB indication is not received, UE starts measuring the always-ON SSBs, and generate an L3-RSRP report. When a valid L3-RSRP measurement report is ready process always checks whether OD-SSB indication has been  received. Then upon receiving the OD-SSB indication, UE sends the measurement report to the PCell and the SCell becomes known or SCell will be activated as if it is known.

[0144] As shown in FIG. 7, Option 2 may include the following steps:

[0145] Based on those solutions as described above, the UE side can perform the SCell activation with on-demand SSB together with considering additional the cell measurements based on always-ON SSBs within the time gap / time delay i.e. between receiving the SCell activation command and the OD-SSB indication signaling, thereby facilitating the activation of the second cell, thus significantly reducing at least the SCell activation delay, i.e., fast SCell activation.

[0146] FIG. 8 is a flow chart depicting a method performed by a network node according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The configurations of the entities involved in FIG. 8 can correspond to that of FIG. 4, and will not be repeated here. The specific difference is in that the steps of the method as shown in FIG. 8 may be performed by a network node.

[0147] At block 802, the network node transmits a first message to a terminal device for activating a second cell (e.g., a SCell to-be-activated) . The second cell can be configured with a first SSB transmission (e.g., an always-ON SSB transmission) and a second SSB transmission (e.g., an on-demand-SSB (OD-SSB) transmission) .

[0148] In some embodiments, the first message may be a message such as a RRC message or a MAC CE message as exemplified above in relation to FIG. 3 and / or FIG. 4.

[0149] Then after receiving an acknowledgement message to the first message at block 804, the network node transmits at block 806 to the terminal device a second message for triggering the second SSB transmission.

[0150] In some embodiments, the acknowledgement message may be a HARQ-ACK for SCell activation command.

[0151] In some embodiments, the second message may be a message such as a RRC message or a MAC CE message, which may be same as or different from the first message used, as described and exemplified above in relation to FIG. 3 and / or FIG. 4, and will not be repeated here.

[0152] FIG. 9 is an example signaling diagram for OD-SSB based SCell activation according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 9 specifically provides an example signaling of SCell activation when OD-SSB indication is present in SCell activation process.

[0153] Following is one example description of how the method according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure can be realized using NR as an example system. In other embodiments, the method can be applied also in other systems such as 6G.

[0154] Step 1: UE may receive always-ON SSB transmission for example in a to-be-activated unknown SCell.

[0155] Step 2: The UE may indicate to the network that the UE is capable of supporting on-demand SSB transmissions for example in the unknown SCell.

[0156] Step 3: The network may configure the UE with an SCell. The SCell configuration may include information that on-demand SSB is used in the SCell and it is triggered at least by SCell configuration. Additionally, other necessary parameters needed by the UE to use and operate in the on-demand SCell may be included e.g. the transmission pattern of the OD-SSBs.

[0157] Step 4: UE may receive SCell activation command for the unknown SCell from the network.

[0158] Steps 5-6: the UE may transmit a valid measurement report (e.g., a L3-RSRP report) , and then the unknown SCell becomes a known SCell or will be activated as if it is known.

[0159] Steps 7-8: the UE may receive the OD-SSB indication, and then receive OD-SSB transmission in the SCell.

[0160] There may be alternative Step 5’ -8’ as below:

[0161] Steps 5’ -6’ : the UE may receive the OD-SSB indication, and then receive OD-SSB transmission in the unknown SCell.

[0162] Steps 7’ -8’ : the UE may transmit a valid measurement report (e.g., a L3-RSRP report) , and then the unknown SCell becomes a known SCell or will be activated as if it is known.

[0163] And then, the network may inform or configure the UE with the necessary CSI configuration for channel measurement. The UE may then perform measurements and transmit a valid CSI report based on the CSI configuration.

[0164] At this point, the SCell activation procedure can be considered as successfully completed.

[0165] In summary, as described above, this invention proposes the solutions on reduction of SCell activation delay with on-demand SSB together with performing cell measurements based on always-ON SSBs while achieving measurement delay reduction, thus to decrease signaling overhead and UE power consumption as well as improve the resource efficiency of the network.

[0166] In addition, the SCell activation delay shall be (re-) defined and / or adapted considering the measurement and measurement reporting status before OD-SSB indication signaling by achieving such measurement delay reduction.

[0167] Although discussions have been made with respect to a SCell to-be-activated and the usage of a SCell activation command in the previous description, there may be situations where a PSCell is to be activated in other example embodiments for example, and the mechanisms disclosed herein with appropriate configuration and activation messages can still be applicable.

[0168] Now reference is made to FIG. 10 illustrating a simplified block diagram of an apparatus 1000 that may be embodied in / as the network node such as a base station, or the terminal device. The apparatus 1000 may comprise at least one processor 1001, such as a data processor (DP) and at least one memory 1002 coupled to the at least one processor 1001. The apparatus 1000 may further comprise one or more transmitters TX, one or more receivers RX 1003, or one or more transceivers coupled to the one or more processors 1001 to communicate wirelessly and / or through wireline.

[0171] The memory 1002 may be of any type suitable to the local technical environment and may be implemented using any suitable data storage technology, such as semiconductor-based memory devices, magnetic memory devices and systems, optical memory devices and systems, fixed memory and removable memory, as non-limiting examples.

[0172] The memory 1002 stores a program 1004. The program 1004 may include instructions that, when executed on the associated processor 1001, enable the apparatus 1000 to operate in accordance with the embodiments of the present disclosure. A combination of the at least one processor 1001 and the at least one memory 1002 may form processing circuitry or means 1005 adapted to implement various embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0173] Various embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented by computer program executable by one or more of the processors 1001, software, firmware, hardware or in a combination thereof.
