Description

REFERENCE SIGNAL DESIGN METHODS FOR WIRELESS SENSING IN INTEGRATED SENSING AND COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates to integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) , and particularly relates to a sensing reference design method and related user equipment for orthogonal frequency domain multiplexing communication system, which can enhance efficiency and flexibility of radio resource.BACKGROUND

[0002] The background description provided herein is for the purpose of generally presenting the context of the disclosure. Work of the presently named inventors, to the extent the work is described in this background section, as well as aspects of the description that may not otherwise qualify as prior art at the time of filing, are neither expressly nor impliedly admitted as prior art against the present disclosure.

[0003] ISAC is a key technology for B5G / 6G system, in which reference signal configuration is crucial for enabling sensing performance. It should be noted that for ISAC systems, the configuration of reference signals needs to consider not only the sensing capabilities but also how to integrate with the communication system. Hence, in this patent, a unified framework for reference signal configuration is proposed, which takes into account the ambiguity function characteristic in both the delay (distance) domain and the doppler (velocity) domain for sensing, as well as the integration with communication system. This framework allows for flexible configuration of reference signals based on different sensing performance requirements and communication performance requirements, achieving efficient use of radio resources.SUMMARY

[0004] A unified reference signal configuration framework is proposed, which is applicable to ISAC systems based on orthogonal frequency domain multiplexing (OFDM) and related to user equipment (UE) . This framework aims to enhance sensing performance: the ambiguity functions characteristic in both the delay (distance) and doppler (velocity) dimensions ensure sensing resolution and accuracy, while allowing for better integration with the legacy communication system (like 5G / LTE / LTE-A or WCDMA) and also for future communication system like 5G-A or 6G.

[0005] This reference signal configuration framework is a multi-level framework with the smallest configuration unit being the RS pattern, including but not limited to no-staggering pattern and fully staggering pattern which including staggering A pattern and staggering B pattern.

[0006] The multi-level reference signal configuration framework is proposed, which can be adapted to different scenarios. For use case of mode recognition like respiration detection, this framework can achieve uniform signal configuration, in which case the multi-level framework degenerates to a single-level framework.

[0007] The proposed multi-level reference signal configuration framework enables non-uniform reference signal configurations. For use cases that require high accuracy, such as tracking, it can meet the requirements for sensing performance with using fewer radio resources.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0017] The unified reference signal configuration framework proposed by this disclosure is based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) for ISAC systems. It is applicable to legacy communication networks including but not limited to LTE / LTE-A / TD-LTE networks, or WCDMA networks, and will also be applicable to future network systems such as 5G-A or 6G. The reference signal configuration framework proposed by this disclosure can be applied to various sensing modes, including but not limited to mono-static sensing, bi-static sensing, multi-static sensing modes, etc.

[0018] The reference signal configuration framework disclosed herein is a multi-level configuration scheme, where the number of levels is based on the quantity of different reference signal symbol spacing. The present disclosure does not limit the number of levels (at least two) . For illustrative purposes, a three-level configuration is described in detail. The first-level serves as the smallest reference signal configuration unit based on RS pattern, encompassing configuration parameters for an RS pattern like subcarrier spacing Ssub in unit of RE, staggering offset of mth symbol in unit of RE, symbol spacing Ssym in unit of symbols, the number of symbols UF for one RS pattern. The first-level configuration is based on RS pattern, this disclosure exemplifies three types of RS patterns:

[0019] Fig. 1a, 1b, 1c are schematic diagrams of different RS pattern structure including no-staggering, staggering A and staggering B of an embodiment of the present disclosure. no-staggering pattern (Fig 1 (a) ) :  is same for each symbol.

[0020] staggering A pattern (Fig 1 (b) ) : staggering offset such that where pslope is relative prime to Ssub and β1∈ {0, 1, …Ssub-1} , where β1 is initial staggering offset; m=0, 1, …UF-1 is index of symbol within a RS pattern.

[0021] staggering B pattern (Fig 1 (c) ) : staggering offset such that there does not exist an integer pair (κ1∈ {1, 2, …, Ssub-1} ,  ) such that the following modulo equation system holds true:

[0022] for m=0, 1, …UF-1,  UF is number of symbol in one RS pattern.

[0023] The second-level configuration unit is “burst” , including NF≥1 RS pattern. totally M symbols are used for one burst. Configuration parameters including the burst spacing Ssec in unit of symbol, and the number of bursts Q. Q bursts in the second-level configuration unit constitute “burst set” including at least one burst.

[0024] The third level configuration unit is “burst set” , including configuration parameter burst set spacing Sthird, burst set period Tthird, and the number of burst sets P. Fig2-4 illustrate the reference signal configuration framework using examples of no-staggering, staggering A, and staggering B patterns, respectively.

[0025] Fig 2 shows that RS pattern is no-staggering pattern, UF=1, Ssym=3, Ssub=4, NF=4 RS pattern for a burst; Fig 3 shows that RS pattern is staggering A pattern, where UF=4, Ssym=1, Ssub=4, NF=2, pslope=1, β1=0; Fig 4 shows that RS pattern is staggering B pattern, where UF=4, Ssym=3, Ssub=4, NF=1, staggering offset

[0026] This disclosure provides analysis of delay-doppler (distance-doppler) ambiguity characteristic when adapting different reference signal configurations. The results are based on super-resolution algorithms (MUSIC, IAA) . Set τ and f are true delay and doppler of sensing target.

[0027] 1. Since delay (distance) and doppler (velocity) domain are decoupled in the no-staggering pattern, the analysis here focuses solely in the doppler domain. Equation solved in MUSIC / IAA is: A=BS+Noise       (1)

[0028] Where received vector is A, and amplitude vector of sensing signal is where q=0, 1, …, Q-1, m=0, 1, …, M-1, p=0, 1, …, P-1 denote the index of symbol, burst and burst set, T is OFDM symbol duration. Steering vector B is estimated vector which is represented as

[0029] To fulfill that no ambiguity peak exists, the anti-condition of equation

[0030] should be met for each q, m and p. We firstly derive the conditions that satisfy the (3) . Equivalently, (3) can be reformulated as

[0031] Firstly set p=q=0,  Z∈ {1, 2, ..., Ssym-1} can satisfy the equation (4) . Then substituting into equation (4) ,  the third term in left side of equation is integer already, which is ignored in the following derivation. Set p=0,  for each q, only when Ssec and Ssym are not prime. Then set q=0,  If Ssec and Ssym are not prime, set  (Z2 is an integer) ,  only when Sthird and Ssym are not coprime. Then conclusion can be made for no-staggering RS pattern, there are two types of reference signal configuration cases:

[0032] Case1.1 any two of Sthird, Ssec and Ssym are coprime, maximum unambiguity range in doppler (velocity) domain can be achieved.

[0033] Case1.2 when Sthird, Ssec and Ssym are not coprime, estimated targets at Z=Φ1∩Φ2 , where where lcm (·) means least common multiple.

[0034] 2. For staggering pattern, equation solved in MUSIC / IAA is as shown in equation (1) . Amplitude vector of sensing signal is

[0035] where k=0, 1, …, N-1, q=0, 1, …, Q-1, m=0, 1, …, M-1, p=0, 1, .., P-1 . The estimated steering vector is:

[0036] To fulfill that no ambiguity peak exists, the anti-condition:

[0037] should be met for each k, q, m and p. Equivalently, equation (6) can be set as

[0038] In the first step, set m=q=p=0, equation (7) is equivalent to then Z1∈ {1, 2, …, Ssub-1} . Then substitute Δτ into equation (7) ,

[0039] Where Z1k is ignore in the following derivation since it is integer already. Secondly, set k=q=p=0, and m=1, ΔfhTSsymSsub=Z2, Z2∈ {1, 2, …, SsymSsub-1} , substituting into equation (8)

[0040] Thirdly, set m=p=0,   (considering rotation invariance of MUSIC, it is reasonable to assume ) which is equivalent to that equation holds true when Ssec+ (M-1) Ssym and SsymSsub are not coprime. Specially, if M=Ssub is assumed,  (Z3 is an integer) can be represented as Z2 (Ssec-Ssym) =Z3SsymSsub, i.e. (Ssec-Ssym) and SsymSsub are not coprime.

[0041] Fourthly, set m=q=0, equation (9) can be represented asZ2p {Sthird+ (Q-1) ( (Ssec-Ssym) ) } =Z3SsymSsub, equation holds true when {Sthird+ (Q-1) ( (Ssec-Ssym) ) } and SsymSsub are not coprime. Then set p=q=0,  which is equivalent to

[0042] For general staggering patterns, anti-condition of equation (6) can be equivalent to anti-condition of following equations.

[0043] When the first-level configuration comprises one or more complete RS patters, which means mod (M, Ssub) =0, anti-condition of equation (6) can be equivalent to anti-condition of following equations

[0044] One special example to holds mod {Z2 (Ssec-Ssym) , SsymSsub } ≠0 is Ssec and Ssym are coprime, which indicates Ssec-Ssym and Ssub are coprime.

[0045] Next, based on the using entire RS pattern in the first-level configuration, the unambiguous range of delay-doppler is analyzed.

[0046] For staggering A RS pattern. In mathematical derivation,  can be equivalent to

[0047] Case2.1 estimated targets at Δfh=f, Δτ=τ, which means unambiguity range of delay-doppler is maximum, when following conditions are satisfied

[0048] Case2.2 estimated targets at when following equations establish

[0049] where integer 0≤Z2≤Ssym-1, 0≤Z1≤Ssub-1, which can be directly obtained through equation (11) .

[0050] Case2.3 estimated targets at Δτ=τ, when

[0051] 3. For staggering B RS pattern, staggering offset of which fulfills the equation for each m, which indicates that no ambiguity peak exists in delay domain. Then set Z1=0, the analyzed equation degenerates into equation (4) , hence the derivation logic is same as no-staggering pattern.

[0052] Case3.1 estimated targets at Δfh=f, Δτ=τ, which means unambiguity range of delay-doppler is maximum, when following conditions are satisfied: any two of Sthird, Ssec and Ssym are coprime.

[0053] Case3.2 when Sthird, Ssec and Ssym are not coprime, estimated targets at Δτ=τ, Z=Φ1∩Φ2, where means least common multiple, Z≤Ssym-1 is a integer.

[0054] In the three-level configuration, when the spacing Sthird, Ssec and Ssym levels are equal, the reference signal configuration simplifies to a single-level configuration. This configuration is suitable for use cases that require a uniform reference signal configuration scheme, such as respiration detection, intrusion detection, etc.

[0055] The three-layer RS configuration framework, if to be applied in traditional slot-based communication systems, may adopt the following schemes: for instance, ensuring that the length of the RS pattern and burst is less than or equal to the length of a slot, and ensuring that the position of the RS pattern and burst is within a single slot, where the concept of a burst can be equated to that of a slot. Under these conditions, the following equation holds: (M-1) Ssym+Δoff+Δ=14           (12)

[0056] Where Δoff is starting symbol offset, Δ is symbol spacing between the last RS symbol in a burst and the 14th symbol of the slot, referring to Fig 5. Fig 5 is schematic diagram of three-level reference signal configuration for slot-based system with no-staggering RS pattern, where RS pattern is no-staggering pattern, M=4 Δoff=2, Ssym=3, Δ=3, Ssec=Δ+Δoff=5.

[0057] For future potential symbol-based communication systems, the three-layer configuration approach can be directly applied. And the length of the RS pattern and burst may be less than or equal to, or greater than, a slot. The position of the RS pattern and burst may also cross the boundary of a slot, as shown in Fig 6. Fig 6 is schematic diagram of three-level reference signal configuration for symbol-based system with staggering B RS pattern, where RS pattern is staggering B pattern, staggering offset NF=1 M=4, Ssym=3.

[0058] To achieve the configurations mentioned in case 1.1, case 3.1, where any two of Sthird, Ssec and Ssym are relatively prime, and Ssec and Ssym are coprime of case 2.1, the following configuration can be adopted:

[0059] 1. Consider setting Ssym and Ssec to be coprime, with no specific configuration requirements for Sthird, allowing the burst set to be transmitted with a period Tthird.

[0060] 2. For slot-based system, firstly, when the slot spacing of the adjacent burst Qslot is zero, traverse through different values of M within a burst (slot) , and for varying values of starting symbol offset Δoffwithin a burst (slot) , identify all coprime pairs (S′sym, S′sec) , for example:

[0061] (1) Δoff=0, M=2, coprime pairs (S′sym, S′sec) can be (1, 13) , (3, 11) , (5, 9) , (9, 5) , (11, 3) , (13, 1)

[0062] (2) Δoff=0, M=4, coprime pairs (S′sym, S′sec) can be (1, 12) , (3, 8) , (5, 4) , (7, 1)

[0063] 3. When the slot spacing of the adjacent burst is Qslot≠0, to ensure that Ssym and Ssec are coprime, set Qslot=z·Ssym, and Ssym=S′sym, Ssec=Qslot·14+S′sec, z=1, 2, …is  integer, refer to Fig 7. Fig 7 is schematic diagram of a specific configuration method for slot-based system to achieve maximum doppler unambiguity for no-staggering pattern and maximum delay-doppler unambiguity range for staggering B pattern.

[0064] 4. For symbol-based system, Ssym may be set as prime number, i.e. Ssym=1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, ..., z≠Ssym, …is an positive integer, refer to Fig 8. Fig. 8 is schematic diagram of a specific configuration method for symbol-based system to achieve maximum doppler unambiguity for no-staggering pattern and maximum delay-doppler unambiguity range for staggering B pattern.

[0065] In summary, this disclosure proposes a multi-level reference signal configuration framework that can accommodate both uniform and non-uniform reference signal configuration requirements, and this reference signal configuration framework is applicable to both slot-based and symbol-based communication systems. Based on three RS patterns and employing super-resolution algorithms, this reference signal configuration scheme provides the characteristic of the ambiguity function in the delay-doppler (distance-velocity) domain under different configurations. Additionally, it outlines the configuration schemes necessary to achieve the maximum unambiguous range.
