[0028] In order to take into account the fusion of the IKEv2 fixed flow and the 3GPP access NAS registration, the registration flow of a user equipment (UE) from a non-3GPP access to a network needs to use two sets of control plane protocol stacks and a tunnel mode to implement. FIG. 1 is one control plane protocol stack, and FIG. 2 is another control plane protocol stack, which causes the N3IWF to additionally allocate an IP address for the NAS, resulting in the problems of complex implementation and large protocol overhead. Moreover, the user plane protocol also adopts an IPSec tunnel mode, and FIG. 3 is one user plane protocol stack, which also has similar problems as the control plane.

[0029] The registration method provided in this application can be applied to various wireless communication systems, such as a long term evolution (LTE) system, a 4th-generation (4G) system, a 5G system, a mixed architecture system of LTE and 5G, a new radio (NR) system, and a new communication system to be generated in future communication development, such as a 6th-Generation mobile communication (6G) system. FIG. 4 is a networking schematic diagram of a wireless communication system according to an embodiment. As shown in FIG. 4, the wireless communication system includes a terminal device 110, a packet data gateway (PDG) 120, and a core network device 130.

[0030] The terminal device 110 can be a device with wireless transceiving function, which can be deployed on land, water surface or in the air. Examples of some terminal devices 110 include: a wireless terminal, a UE, a mobile phone, a mobile station, a tablet computer, a notebook computer, an ultra-mobile personal computer (UMPC), a handheld computer, a netbook, a personal digital assistant (PDA) and other network-enabled user equipment, or a virtual reality (VR) terminal, an augmented reality (AR) terminal, a wireless terminal in industrial control, a wireless terminal in self driving, a wireless terminal in remote medical treatment, a wireless terminal in smart grid, a wireless terminal in transportation safety, a wireless terminal in smart city, a wireless terminal in smart home, or an Internet of Things (IoT) node in Internet of Things, or a vehicle communication device in vehicle networking, or an entertainment, game device or system, or a global positioning system device, etc. Embodiments of the present application do not limit the specific technology and specific device form of the terminal device, and in addition, the terminal device can be referred to as a terminal. The PDG 120 is an access device through which the terminal device 110 accesses the wireless communication system wirelessly. The core network device 130 can include an access and mobility management network element and a session management network element. Exemplarily, the terminal device 110 can access the core network through the PDG 120 to realize data transmission.

[0031] The registration method, the packet data gateway, the terminal device and the storage medium provided by the present application can simplify the process of the terminal device accessing from the non-3GPP access network, reduce the overhead, and have important significance for improving the network reliability and robustness.

[0032] In the following, the registration method, the packet data gateway, the terminal device and the technical effects thereof are described.

[0033] For ease of description, the explanations of technical terms in the present application are as follows:

[0034] Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC) is a new transport layer protocol that implements many TCP features on top of the User Datagram Protocol (UDP). It aims to provide low-latency and high-throughput services to improve the user experience of Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)-based internet applications and services. QUIC was initially designed to reduce webpage load times and improve security. It uses UDP instead of traditional TCP to reduce overhead and allow for faster retransmissions. The basic QUIC protocol is defined in IETF RFC 9000, and other related protocols can be found in relevant IETF RFCs such as 3GPP TS 23.402, 3GPP TS 23.501, IETF RFC 9000, IETF RFC 9001, IETF RFC 9002, and IETF RFC 9114.

[0035] QUIC has the following technical features:

[0036] (1) Fast connection establishment: QUIC uses session reuse to reduce connection establishment latency, allowing parameters from previous connections to be reused on a new connection, thereby avoiding the waiting time of the Transport Layer Security (TLS) handshake.

[0037] (2) Multiplexing: QUIC supports the parallel transmission of multiple data streams on the same connection without blocking other data streams due to the delay of one data stream, unlike TCP.

[0038] (3) Security: It has built-in encryption similar to TLS, providing end-to-end secure connections and protecting data transmission from eavesdropping and tampering.

[0039] (4) Connection migration: QUIC allows connection migration without interrupting service, such as when a user switches from one network to another.

[0040] (5) Connection ID: Each QUIC connection has a set of connection identifiers, i.e., connection IDs. Each connection ID can identify this connection. The main function of the connection ID is to ensure that when the address changes of the underlying protocol (such as UDP, IP and lower-level protocol stacks), a QUIC connection's data packets will not be transmitted to the wrong terminal.

[0041] (6) Flow control and congestion control: QUIC implements two-level flow control, not only connection-level flow control, but also stream-level flow control, to prevent the sender from overloading the network or the receiver.

[0042] Fig. 5 is a flowchart of a registration method provided in an embodiment. As shown in Fig. 5, the method provided in the embodiment is applicable to a PDG. The method includes S510-S540.

[0043] S510, establishing a control plane connection with a terminal device according to a QUIC-based control plane protocol.

[0044] In the process of accessing a non-3GPP access network, the terminal device usually first establishes a control plane connection with the PDG, and then establishes a user plane connection with the PDG. The PDG in the present application can be a conventional PDG or a new PDG capable of implementing the functions of the present application.

[0045] When establishing the control plane connection with the PDG, the QUIC-based control plane protocol is used. The QUIC-based control plane protocol can be another application layer protocol based on QUIC, or a control plane protocol of the third version of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP / 3).

[0046] The terminal device triggers a QUIC handshake process with the PDG according to the QUIC-based control plane protocol. After the terminal device and the PDG verify the QUIC Finished message, the control plane connection is considered to be established, and the terminal device and the PDG can start exchanging control plane signaling (such as control plane protocol messages) securely.

[0047] The PDG establishes a control plane connection with the terminal device based on the QUIC-based control plane protocol. The design of QUIC enables it to provide stronger recovery capability in the face of unstable network or packet loss. The further combination of QUIC and HTTP / 3 enables the application program to load faster, especially in a mobile network environment.

[0048] In an embodiment, when the QUIC-based control plane protocol is a control plane protocol of HTTP / 3,

[0049] During the execution of S510, the PDG can also send a QUIC extension frame to the terminal device. The QUIC extension frame includes Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) information, which is used to indicate the resource location of the related services provided by the network.

[0050] S520, receiving a registration request message sent by the terminal device based on the control plane connection, the registration request message comprising identification information of the terminal device and registration parameters.

[0051] The registration request message is used to indicate that the terminal device requests to register to the core network device. In an embodiment, the registration parameters can comprise a registration type, such as initial registration, registration update, emergency registration, etc.

[0052] S530, sending an authentication request message to the core network device according to the identification information of the terminal device and the registration parameters.

[0053] S540, receiving an authentication authorization message sent by the core network device, and sending a registration response message to the terminal device according to the authentication authorization message.

[0054] The authentication request message indicates that the core network device is requested to authenticate the UE, and the authentication authorization message indicates the completion of the authentication authorization process. After the authentication authorization process is completed, the PDG sends a registration response message to the terminal device.

[0055] In an embodiment, the registration response message comprises at least one of user plane connection identification information and connection indication information, the connection indication information being used to indicate whether the terminal device performs 0-Round Trip Time (0-RTT) fast connection establishment. The registration response message can also comprise user plane Quality of Service (QoS) information.

[0056] The user plane connection identification information comprises at least one of the following: a UDP port number of the PDG, a QUIC connection identification used for the user plane connection, and encapsulation layer identification information used for encapsulating user plane packets.

[0057] After S540 is executed, the PDG can also establish a user plane connection with the terminal device based on the QUIC-based user plane protocol; receive a user plane uplink packet sent by the terminal device based on the user plane connection, and forward the user plane uplink packet to the core network device; or receive a user plane downlink packet sent by the core network device, and forward the user plane downlink packet to the terminal device based on the user plane connection.

[0058] In an embodiment, if the registration response message comprises the connection indication information and the connection indication information indicates that the terminal device performs 0-RTT fast connection establishment, the PDG can also send session recovery parameter information to the terminal device to realize fast recovery of the connection between the PDG and the terminal device. The session recovery parameter information comprises a session ticket.

[0059] Exemplarily, after the user plane connection and / or the control plane connection established by the PDG and the terminal device are released, the PDG receives a session recovery request message sent by the terminal device, the session recovery request message comprising session recovery parameter information; and according to the session recovery request message, the user plane connection and / or the control plane connection with the terminal device are recovered.

[0060] In an embodiment, when the user plane connection is established with the terminal device, the PDG can also receive switching indication information sent by the core network device, and send the switching indication information to the terminal device. The switching indication information is used to indicate whether the core network device allows the terminal device to perform connection migration.

[0061] If the switching indication information indicates that the core network device allows the terminal device to perform connection migration, the PDG receives a path challenge message sent by the terminal device; according to the path challenge message, switches the control plane connection and / or the user plane connection with the terminal device from one access network to another access network; and sends a path response message to the terminal device. Thus, the switching of the access network is realized.

[0062] FIG. 6 is a flowchart of another registration method provided in an embodiment. As shown in FIG. 6, the method provided in the embodiment is applicable to a terminal device. The method comprises S610-S630.

[0063] S610, a control plane connection is established with the PDG according to a QUIC-based control plane protocol.

[0064] In the process of the terminal device from a non-3GPP access network, the terminal device usually first establishes a control plane connection with the PDG, and then establishes a user plane connection with the PDG. When the control plane connection is established with the PDG, the QUIC-based control plane protocol is used. The QUIC-based control plane protocol can be another application layer protocol based on QUIC, or a control plane protocol of HTTP / 3.

[0065] The terminal device triggers a QUIC handshake process with the PDG according to the QUIC-based control plane protocol. When the terminal device and the PDG verify the QUIC Finished message, the control plane connection is considered to be established, and the terminal device and the PDG can start to exchange control plane signaling (such as control plane protocol messages) safely.

[0066] The control plane connection established by the terminal device and the PDG based on the QUIC-based control plane protocol. The design of QUIC enables it to provide stronger recovery capability in the face of unstable network or packet loss. The further combination of QUIC and HTTP / 3 enables the application program to load faster, especially in a mobile network environment.

[0067] In an embodiment, when the control plane protocol based on QUIC is the control plane protocol of HTTP / 3, in the process of S610, the terminal device can further receive a QUIC extension frame sent by the PDG, the QUIC extension frame comprising Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) information, the URI information being used to indicate a resource location of a related service provided by the network; and the terminal device can subsequently generate a registration request message according to the URI information.

[0068] S620, sending, to the PDG, a registration request message based on the control plane connection, the registration request message comprising identification information of the terminal device and registration parameters.

[0069] The registration request message is used to indicate that the terminal device requests to register to the core network device. In an embodiment, the registration parameters can comprise a registration type, such as initial registration, registration update, emergency registration, and the like.

[0070] S630, receiving a registration response message sent by the PDG.

[0071] In an embodiment, the registration response message comprises at least one of user plane connection identification information and connection indication information, the connection indication information being used to indicate whether the terminal device performs 0-RTT fast connection establishment. Optionally, the registration response message can further comprise user plane data QoS information.

[0072] The user plane connection identification information comprises at least one of the following: a UDP port number of the PDG, a QUIC connection identification used for the user plane connection, and encapsulation layer identification information used for encapsulating user plane packets.

[0073] After S630 is performed, the terminal device can further establish a user plane connection with the PDG based on a user plane protocol based on QUIC, send a user plane uplink packet to the PDG based on the user plane connection, or receive a user plane downlink packet sent by the PDG based on the user plane connection.

[0074] In an embodiment, if the registration response message comprises the connection indication information and the connection indication information indicates that the terminal device performs 0-RTT fast connection establishment, the terminal device can further receive session recovery parameter information sent by the PDG, so as to realize fast recovery of the connection between the PDG and the terminal device. The session recovery parameter information comprises a session ticket.

[0075] Exemplarily, after the user plane connection and / or the control plane connection established by the PDG and the terminal device is released, the terminal device sends a session recovery request message to the PDG, the session recovery request message comprising session recovery parameter information, so that the PDG recovers the user plane connection and / or the control plane connection with the terminal device according to the session recovery request message.

[0076] In an embodiment, when establishing the user plane connection with the PDG, the terminal device can also receive the handover indication information sent by the PDG, the handover indication information being used to indicate whether the core network device allows the terminal device to perform connection migration.

[0077] If the handover indication information indicates that the core network device allows the terminal device to perform connection migration, the terminal device sends a path challenge message to the PDG, so that the PDG switches the control plane connection and / or the user plane connection with the terminal device from one access network to another access network according to the path challenge message; and receives a path response message sent by the PDG. Thus, the handover of the access network is realized.

A registration method applied to a terminal device, comprising: establishing a control plane connection with a packet data gateway (PDG) based on a quick user datagram protocol (UDP) internet connection (QUIC)-based control plane protocol; sending a registration request message to the PDG based on the control plane connection, the registration request message comprising identification information and registration parameters of the terminal device; receiving a registration response message sent by the PDG.

12. The registration method of claim 11, wherein, The QUIC-based control plane protocol is a QUIC-based other application layer protocol or a control plane protocol of a third version of hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) / 3.

13. The registration method of claim 12, wherein, When the QUIC-based control plane protocol is the control plane protocol of HTTP / 3, when the control plane connection is established with the PDG, the method further includes: receiving a QUIC extension frame sent by the PDG, the QUIC extension frame comprising uniform resource identifier (URI) information, the URI information being used to indicate a resource location of a related service provided by a network; generating the registration request message according to the URI information.

14. The registration method of claim 11, wherein, The registration response message comprises at least one of user plane connection identification information and connection indication information, the connection indication information being used to indicate whether the terminal device performs 0-RTT (zero round trip time) fast connection establishment.

15. The registration method of claim 14, wherein, The user plane connection identification information comprises at least one of a user datagram protocol (UDP) port number of the PDG, a QUIC connection identification used for a user plane connection, and encapsulation layer identification information used for encapsulating a user plane message.

16. The registration method according to claim 14, after receiving the registration response message sent by the PDG, the method further includes: establishing a user plane connection with the PDG based on a QUIC-based user plane protocol; sending a user plane uplink message to the PDG based on the user plane connection; or receiving a user plane downlink message sent by the PDG based on the user plane connection. If the registration response message comprises the connection indication information and the connection indication information indicates that the terminal device performs 0-RTT fast connection establishment, the method further includes:

17. The registration method of claim 16, wherein, receiving session recovery parameter information sent by the PDG; after releasing at least one of the user plane connection and the control plane connection established with the PDG, sending a session recovery request message to the PDG, the session recovery request message comprising the session recovery parameter information. The session recovery parameter information comprises a session ticket.

18. The registration method of claim 17, wherein, When the user plane connection is established with the PDG, the method further includes:

19. The registration method of claim 16, wherein, receiving handover indication information sent by the PDG, the handover indication information being used to indicate whether a core network device allows the terminal device to perform connection migration. 20. The registration method of claim 19, wherein, if the handover indication information indicates that the core network device allows the terminal device to perform connection migration; further comprising: sending a path challenge message to the PDG; receiving a path response message sent by the PDG.

21. A packet data gateway, comprising: a processor; the processor is configured to implement the registration method of any one of claims 1-10 when executing the computer program.

22. A terminal device comprising: a processor; the processor is configured to implement the registration method of any one of claims 11-20 when executing the computer program.

23. A computer readable storage medium storing a computer program, the computer program being executed by a processor to implement the registration method of any one of claims 1-20.
