[0003] RENDERING DYNAMIC LIGHT SCENES ON AN AUGMENTED REALITY DEVICE
[0004] FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0005] The invention relates to a method of rendering a dynamic light scene on a display of an augmented reality device. The invention further relates to a computer program product for executing the method. The invention further relates to an augmented reality device for rendering a dynamic light scene.
[0006] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0007] Home environments may contain controllable lighting units for creation of atmosphere, accent or task lighting. These controllable lighting units may be controlled via a user interface of a control device, such as a smartphone, via a wireless network.
[0008] In order to assist a user in the process of purchasing a lighting device, lighting devices may be rendered on a display of an augmented reality device such that the user can preview the lighting device(s) before buying it. The display shows an image of the (physical) environment of the user, and the (virtual) lighting device is rendered as an overlay on the environment, for instance by overlaying a virtual representation of the lighting device on the image, or by mixing the image with the virtual representation of the lighting device. This enables a user to see how the lighting device would look like in the user’s personal environment.
[0009] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0010] The inventors have realized that it may be desirable to preview dynamic light scenes such as a wake-up light scene or a go-to-sleep light scene in augmented reality. It is therefore an object to provide a method and an augmented reality device for previewing dynamic light scenes efficiently. The inventors have realized that, when rendering a dynamic light scene in augmented reality, the durations of many dynamic light scenes are too long for a user to perceive differences in light output over time. Additionally, rendering the full dynamic light scene would require a long time, which is inefficient when previewing lighting devices (and their effects) in augmented reality. 2024PF80216
[0011] 2
[0012] According to a first aspect, the object is achieved by a method of rendering a dynamic light scene on a display of an augmented reality device, wherein the method comprises: capturing, by the augmented reality device, an image of a physical environment, displaying the image on the display, obtaining a location for the dynamic light scene on the display in the image, obtaining the dynamic light scene, wherein the dynamic light scene is defined as sequence of light settings over a predefined period of time, determining an adjusted period of time for the dynamic light scene, wherein the adjusted period of time is shorter than the predefined period of time, and rendering the dynamic light scene on the display at the location as an overlay on the image of the physical environment by transitioning through the sequence of light settings over the adjusted period of time.
[0013] By determining an adjusted period of time which is shorter than the predefined period of time, the duration of the dynamic light scene is reduced. Consequently, the user operating the augmented reality device can better perceive the differences between the different light settings of the dynamic scene, and it requires less time and effort to preview the dynamic scene. It further assists the user in the process of deciding whether to purchase a lighting device able to provide the dynamic light scene.
[0014] The method may further comprise: adjusting the image by decreasing a brightness of at least a part of the image. By adjusting (decreasing) the brightness of the image that is being rendered on the augmented reality device, the visibility of (virtual) light effects of the dynamic light scene are improved, especially when the dynamic light scene is being shown when daylight (or artificial light) is present in the environment.
[0015] The method may further comprise: receiving, via a user interface, a user input indicative of a selection of a dark mode, and adjusting the image by decreasing the brightness of at least the part of the image only when the dark mode has been selected. This enables the user to switch to the dark mode wherein the brightness of at least the part of the image is decreased. The user interface may be further configured to receive a second user input, and switch back to a normal (light) mode wherein the brightness of the captured image is not adjusted.
[0016] The method may further comprise: 2024PF80216
[0017] 3 analyzing the image to determine an initial brightness of the image, and adjusting the image by decreasing the brightness of at least the part of the image if the initial brightness of the image exceeds a threshold brightness. The brightness may be decreased only if the initial brightness is below the threshold brightness. This enables automatic adjustment of the brightness to improve the visibility of the (virtual) light effects of the dynamic light scene.
[0018] The method may further comprise: receiving, from a light sensor, a sensor input indicative of a light level of the physical environment, and adjusting the image by decreasing the brightness of at least the part of the image if the light level exceeds a threshold brightness. This enables automatic adjustment of the brightness to improve the visibility of the (virtual) light effects of the dynamic light scene.
[0019] A plurality of images may be captured and displayed over the adjusted period of time, and a light scene brightness of the dynamic light scene may be decreased over the predefined period of time. The dynamic light scene may, for example, be a go-to-sleep light scene. The method may further comprise: decreasing the brightness of at least the part of the plurality of images over the adjusted period of time. This is beneficial, because the previewed dynamic light scene corresponds to how the actual dynamic light scene would be perceived.
[0020] A plurality of images may be captured and displayed over the adjusted period of time, and a light scene brightness of the dynamic light scene may be increased over the predefined period of time. The dynamic light scene may, for example, be a wake-up light scene. The method may further comprise: increasing the brightness of at least the part of the plurality of images over the adjusted period of time. This is beneficial, because the previewed dynamic light scene corresponds to how the actual dynamic light scene would be perceived.
[0021] The step of obtaining the location may comprise: analyzing the image and selecting the location for the dynamic light scene in the image based on the analyzed image.
[0022] The method may further comprise: determining a first location for a virtual representation of a lighting device based on the analyzed image, and determining a second location for the dynamic light scene in the image based on the first location of the lighting device.
[0023] The method may further comprise: determining a secondary first location for a second virtual representation of a second lighting device based on the analyzed image, and determining a secondary second location for a dynamic light scene in the image based on the 2024PF80216
[0024] 4 location of the second lighting device, and rendering the dynamic light scene at both the first location and the secondary first location. This is beneficial when the
[0025] The step of obtaining the location may comprise: receiving a user input indicative of the location for the dynamic light scene in the image. The user may, for example, position a virtual representation of a lighting device in the image, and the location for the dynamic light scene may be determined based thereon. This enables the user to determine where the preview of the dynamic light scene is rendered, and it further assists the user in the process of deciding whether to purchase a lighting device able to provide the dynamic light scene.
[0026] The predefined period of time may be at least 1 minute, and the adjusted period of time may be less than 30 seconds. The predefined period of time may be adjusted such that it is less than 30 seconds. The predefined period of time may be at least 5 minutes.
[0027] The adjusted period of time may be at least 5 times shorter than the predefined period of time. The predefined period of time may be adjusted such that it is at least 5 times shorter than the predefined period of time.
[0028] The dynamic light scene may be a wake-up light scene, a go-to-sleep light scene or a daylight-dependent light scene. Alternatively, the dynamic light scene may be an entertainment light scene which is based on media content, such as audio. Alternatively, the dynamic light scene may be a user-defined or a system-defined lighting control routine.
[0029] According to a second aspect, the object is achieved by a computer program product for a computing device, the computer program product comprising computer program code to perform the method of any preceding claim when the computer program product is run on a processing unit of the computing device.
[0030] According to a third aspect, the object is achieved by an augmented reality device for rendering a dynamic light scene, comprising: a display, a camera configured to capture an image of a physical environment, a processor configured to: display the image on the display, obtain a location for the dynamic light scene on the display in the image, obtain the dynamic light scene, wherein the dynamic light scene is defined as sequence of light settings over a predefined period of time, determine an adjusted period of time for the dynamic light scene, wherein the adjusted period of time is shorter than the predefined period of time, and 2024PF80216
[0031] 5 render the dynamic light scene on the display at the location as an overlay on the image of the physical environment by transitioning through the sequence of light settings over the adjusted period of time.
[0032] It should be understood that the computer program product and the augmented reality device may have similar and / or identical embodiments and advantages as the above- mentioned lighting devices.

[0040] DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0041] Fig. 1 shows schematically a system 100 comprising an augmented reality device 120 configured to render a (virtual) dynamic light scene 132 as an overlay on the environment 140. The augmented reality device 140 may be operated by a user to preview the dynamic light scene before deploying the dynamic light scene to a lighting system, or before purchasing a lighting device configured to provide such a dynamic light scene.
[0042] The augmented reality device 120 comprises a display 122 and a camera 124 configured to capture images of the environment 140. The augmented reality device further comprises a processor (not shown) configured to render the images captured by the camera 124 on the display 122. The augmented reality device may, for example, be a portable device 2024PF80216
[0043] 6 such as a smartphone or a tablet pc, or a wearable device such as a head-worn augmented reality device. Augmented reality devices are known in the art and will therefore not be discussed in further detail.
[0044] The processor is further configured to render virtual objects as an overlay on the environment 140 to augment the images with the virtual objects. These virtual objects may for example be lighting devices and / or dynamic light scenes. The processor may be configured to overlay a virtual representation of a lighting device or the dynamic light scene on the image. Additionally or alternatively, the processor may be configured to mix the image with the virtual representation of the lighting device or the dynamic light scene. In the example of Fig. 1, the processor may render a virtual representation of a lighting device 130 and a virtual representation of a dynamic light scene 132 as an overlay on the environment 140.
[0045] A dynamic light scene is a light scene that comprises a sequence of light settings over a predefined period of time. For instance, the color, saturation and / or brightness of the light settings may change over the predefined period of time. The dynamic light scene may, for example, be a go-to-sleep light scene, wherein the brightness (intensity) of the light decreases over a period of time (e.g. 20 minutes). Additionally, the color temperature of the light may decrease as well over the period of time. In another example, the dynamic light scene may be a wake-up light scene, wherein the brightness (intensity) of the light increases over a period of time (e.g. 10 minutes). Additionally, the color temperature of the light may increase as well over the period of time. In another example, the dynamic light scene may be a daylight mimicking scene, wherein the color temperature of the light follows / mimics the color temperature of daylight over a period of time (e.g. 1 hour, 12 hours, etc.). It should be understood that these are merely examples of dynamic light scenes, and that the skilled person is able to apply the invention to other dynamic light scenes such as seasonal dynamic light scenes, party light scenes, entertainment light scenes, etc.
[0046] The processor is further configured to obtain a location for the dynamic light scene on the display in the image, obtain the dynamic light scene, wherein the dynamic light scene is defined as sequence of light settings over a predefined period of time, determine an adjusted period of time for the dynamic light scene, wherein the adjusted period of time is shorter than the predefined period of time, and render the dynamic light scene on the display 120 at the location as an overlay on the physical environment 140 by transitioning through the sequence of light settings over the adjusted period of time. The processor of the 2024PF80216
[0047] 7 augmented reality device may perform these steps, or the processor may instruct a remote processor (e.g. located in the cloud) to perform one or more of these steps.
[0048] The processor is configured to obtain a location for the dynamic light scene on the display in the image. Various examples of obtaining (or determining) the location for the dynamic light scene are described below. In a first example, the processor may be configured to analyze the image and select the location for the dynamic light scene in the image based on the analyzed image. The processor may, for example, apply object recognition algorithms to identify objects (e.g. tables, furniture, lamps, etc.) or surfaces (walls, ceilings, tables, floors, etc.) and select an object / surface at which to provide the dynamic light scene. Such object recognition algorithms for image analysis are known in the art and will therefore not be discussed in further detail. Additionally or alternatively, the augmented reality may comprise one or more depth sensors / cameras, and the processor may be configured to determine / detect the locations of objects and surfaces based on sensor data of the depth sensors. Such techniques for scanning a room and creating a depth map of the room to detect surfaces and objects are known in the art and will therefore not be discussed in further detail.
[0049] In another example, the processor may be configured to receive a user input indicative of the location for the dynamic light scene in the image. The user may, for example, provide the user input via a user interface of the augmented reality device 120, for instance via a touch sensitive surface of the display 122 to position the dynamic light scene at a desired location. The user may, for example, position a virtual representation of a lighting device in the image, and the processor may determine the location for the dynamic light scene in the image based on the position of the virtual representation of the lighting device. The virtual representation may, for example, be a 3D model of the lighting device or it may be an icon of the lighting device.
[0050] The processor is configured to obtain the dynamic light scene, wherein the dynamic light scene is defined as sequence of light settings over a predefined period of time. In another example, the dynamic light scene may be a daylight mimicking 2024PF80216
[0051] 8 scene, wherein the color temperature of the light follows / mimics the color temperature of daylight over a period of time (e.g. 1 hour, 12 hours, etc.). It should be understood that these are merely examples of dynamic light scenes, and that the skilled person is able to apply the invention to other dynamic light scenes such as seasonal dynamic light scenes, party light scenes, entertainment light scenes, etc.
[0052] The dynamic light scene may be obtained in various ways. The processor may, for example, select the dynamic light scene from a memory (e.g. from a scene library of a lighting system). The dynamic light scene may be a predetermined light scene, or the processor may be configured to determine / select the dynamic light scene. Alternatively, the dynamic light scene may be associated with a lighting device that has been selected by a user operating the augmented reality device 120. For example, the user may select (a virtual representation of) a lighting device and position that in the image, and the processor may select the dynamic light scene based on the type of the lighting device. If, for example, the lighting device is a bedside lamp, the processor may select a go-to-sleep or a wake-up light scene. In another example, the user may provide a user input via a user interface (e.g. a voice interface, a touch sensitive surface of the display 122, etc.) to select the dynamic light scene.
[0053] The processor is configured to determine an adjusted period of time for the dynamic light scene. The adjusted period of time is shorter than the predefined period of time. The processor may determine the length of the adjusted period of time as a function of the length of the predetermined period of time. For instance, the longer the predetermined period of time is, the longer the adjusted period of time. Alternatively, the adjusted period of time may have a predefined duration (e.g. 15, 20 or 30 seconds). Preferably, the predefined period of time is at least 1 minute, and the adjusted period of time is less than 30 seconds. The predefined period of time may be at least 5 minutes. The adjusted period of time may be at least 5, preferably at least 10, times shorter than the predefined period of time.
[0054] The processor is configured to render the dynamic light scene on the display 120 at the location as an overlay on the physical environment 140 by transitioning through the sequence of light settings of the dynamic light scene over the adjusted period of time. The processor may be further configured to render an indication of the adjusted period of time and / or the predefined period of time on the display. The processor may be configured to render an indication of a remainder of the adjusted period of time and / or the predefined period of time on the display.
[0055] The augmented reality device may comprise a user interface configured to receive user input to select a specific moment in time of the adjusted period of time. The user 2024PF80216
[0056] 9 may, for example, provide a user input to pause the dynamic light scene. Additionally or alternatively, the user interface may, for example, be configured to enable a user to scroll through the dynamic light scene. This is shown in Fig. 2a, which illustrates a slider 250 that enables a user to scroll through the dynamic light scene. It should be understood that this slider is merely an example of a user interface, and that the skilled person is able to design alternatives such as button-based interfaces, voice-interfaces, gesture interfaces, etc.
[0057] The augmented reality device may be connected to a lighting system located in the physical environment 140. The processor may be configured to control one or more lighting devices of the lighting system. The processor may be configured to (in addition to rendering the dynamic light scene on the display at the location as an overlay on the physical environment 140 by transitioning through the sequence of light settings over the adjusted period of time) control one or more lighting devices of the lighting system to provide the dynamic light scene over the adjusted period of time. This enables the user to see how an additional lighting device could affect the dynamic light scene.
[0058] The processor may be further configured to adjust the image by decreasing a brightness of at least a part of the image. The brightness of the full image may be decreased, or only a part of the image. The processor may reduce the brightness at least at the location in the image where the dynamic light scene is rendered. In addition to the brightness, the processor may be configured to adjust the hue or the saturation of (at least a part of) the image to improve the visibility of the dynamic light scene on the display 122. Additionally, or alternatively, the processor may be configured to adjust the color temperature of the image to improve the rendering of the dynamic light scene on the display 122.
[0059] The processor may be further configured to receive, via a user interface, a user input indicative of a selection of a dark mode and adjust the image by decreasing the brightness of at least the part of the image only when the dark mode has been selected. The processor may be further configured to receive, via the user interface, a second user input, and switch back to a normal (light) mode wherein the brightness of the captured image is not adjusted.
[0060] The processor may be further configured to analyze the image to determine an initial brightness of the image, and adjust the image by decreasing the brightness of at least the part of the image if the initial brightness of the image exceeds a threshold brightness. The brightness may thus be decreased only if the initial brightness is below the threshold brightness. Additionally, or alternatively, the processor may be configured to receive, from a light sensor, a sensor input indicative of a light level of the physical environment 140, and 2024PF80216
[0061] 10 adjust the image by decreasing the brightness of at least the part of the image if the light level exceeds a threshold brightness. The sensor may be comprised in the augmented reality device, and the processor may be configured to receive the sensor input directly from the sensor (e.g. a light sensor, a / the camera, etc.). Alternatively, the light sensor may be an external light sensor which may, for example, be comprised in a lighting system, and the processor may receive the sensor input via an input interface such as a receiver (e.g. via a wireless network). The processor may decrease the brightness only if the light level of the environment 140 is below the threshold brightness.
[0062] The processor may be configured to capture and display a plurality of images over time to provide a real-time camera view on the display 122. The processor may be configured to capture and display the plurality of images during the adjusted period of time when the dynamic light scene is being rendered on the display 122. If a light scene brightness of the dynamic light scene decreases over the predefined period of time (e.g. for a go-to-sleep dynamic light scene or a transitional dimming light scene), the processor may decrease the brightness of at least the part of the plurality of images over the adjusted period of time. If a light scene brightness of the dynamic light scene increases over the predefined period of time (e.g. for a wake-up dynamic light scene), the processor may increase the brightness of at least the part of the plurality of images over the adjusted period of time.
[0063] Fig. 2b shows schematically an example of an augmented reality device 120 configured to render multiple light effects 232, 234 of a dynamic light scene on a display 122. Fig. 2b further shows a lighting device 230. This may be a virtual representation of a lighting device (e.g. one that is to be purchased by the user) or it may be a lighting device located in the physical environment. In this example, the lighting device comprises two or more individually controllable light sources, each providing a respective light effect 232, 234. Alternatively, these may be two separate lighting devices, each providing a respective light effect 232, 234. The dynamic light scene may define different light settings for different lighting devices which change over the predefined period of time (and therewith over the adjusted period of time). This may improve the lighting atmosphere in the environment. In another example, multiple virtual representations of lighting devices may be rendered as an overlay on the environment, and multiple corresponding light effects of a dynamic light scene may be rendered on the display. The (virtual representations of the) lighting devices may, for example, be bedside lighting devices to provide wake-up or go-to-sleep light scenes, which light scenes are then rendered at corresponding locations by the processor. 2024PF80216
[0064] 11
[0065] Fig. 3 schematically shows a method 300 of rendering a dynamic light scene on a display of an augmented reality device. The method comprises: capturing 302, by the augmented reality device, an image of a physical environment, displaying 304 the image on the display, obtaining 306 a location for the dynamic light scene on the display in the image, obtaining 308 the dynamic light scene, wherein the dynamic light scene is defined as sequence of light settings over a predefined period of time, determining 310 an adjusted period of time for the dynamic light scene, wherein the adjusted period of time is shorter than the predefined period of time, and rendering 312 the dynamic light scene on the display at the location as an overlay on the physical environment by transitioning through the sequence of light settings over the adjusted period of time.
[0066] The method 300 may be executed by computer program code of a computer program product when the computer program product is run on a processing unit of a computing device, such as the processor of the augmented reality device 120.
