Description

[0001] LIGHTING DEVICE FOR PHOTOGRAPHING OBJECTS

[0002] TECHNICAL FIELD

[0003] The present invention relates generally to an illumination device for photographing objects, in particular for photographing watch and / or jewelry pieces.

[0004] TECHNOLOGICAL BACKGROUND

[0005] Various lighting devices for shooting objects are known in the fields of photography and videography.

[0006] Such devices are known to take the form of a box, a case, or a trunk, defining a substantially enclosed space within which the object to be photographed can be placed. Examples of such devices are described in international applications Nos. WO 2022 / 162044 A1, WO 2022 / 128061 A1, and WO 2022 / 128225 A1.

[0007] International application No. WO 2022 / 162044 A1 describes in particular a light box for photography and videography that incorporates an illumination and viewing system including a light diffuser for efficiently diffusing light within the working volume defined by the box. The illumination and viewing system typically includes a digital camera mounted inside the box to capture photographs or videos of the object placed inside, while allowing the operator to manipulate the object in front of the digital camera. The images captured by the digital camera are typically transmitted to a tablet mounted on the enclosure (or any similar device, such as a smartphone or laptop) for sharing and broadcast to viewers, for example live (or even delayed), particularly via video streaming over a computer network. In one alternative, the possibility of also including an opening leading from the outside of the enclosure into the working area is mentioned, allowing the use of an external camera, such as a video camera.

[0008] B8301-WO_20250828_Specification_for_extension August 28, 2025 external dedicated or integrated camera of a smartphone or digital tablet. A device implementing the subject matter of International Application No. WO 2022 / 162044 A1 is notably marketed by the present Applicant under the name "VISIODOME" and has become commonplace in the watchmaking and jewelry industry to allow the remote presentation of watch or jewelry pieces under stable and high-quality shooting conditions.

[0009] The aforementioned solution is reasonably satisfactory, particularly with regard to lighting and shooting conditions, but it suffers from certain limitations, in particular the fact that the digital camera is permanently installed inside the housing.

[0010] International application No. WO 2015 / 132785 A1 describes an illumination device for photographing small objects, such as precious stones, diamonds, jewelry, coins, or similar objects. This device comprises a base supporting an illumination chamber with a rotating platform capable of holding the object to be examined within the working volume of the illumination chamber, and a bracket adjacent to the illumination chamber, which bracket is configured to hold a smartphone and position the lens of the smartphone's integrated camera opposite an opening communicating with the working volume of the illumination chamber. The illumination chamber consists of an upper and a lower section. The lower section is supported by the base of the device, while the upper section is hinged to the lower section, allowing it to be tilted and providing access to the rotating platform on which the object to be examined is positioned. A light source and a light-diffusing element (or "softring") are also located inside the illumination chamber. The illumination device is designed to allow a smartphone to be placed on the designated holder to capture an image of the object positioned inside the illumination chamber, on the rotating platform.

[0011] B8301-WO_20250828_Specification_for_extension August 28, 2025 The solution described in International Application No.

[0012] WO 2015 / 132785 A1 has the drawback of only allowing the imaging of small objects that can be positioned within the relatively limited working volume of the illumination chamber. Furthermore, the device's configuration requires adapting the geometry of the smartphone holder to the specific configuration of the smartphone being used, making this solution somewhat inflexible in practice. In addition, this illumination device, although portable, is only intended to be placed on a work surface that is approximately horizontal, so as to allow proper use of the rotating platform. Finally, this solution effectively makes any manipulation of the object impossible once the illumination chamber is closed; only the rotating platform can be used to rotate the object to be examined relative to the smartphone's integrated camera.

[0013] Another similar solution is described in US patent application No. US 2021 / 0240054 A1. In this application, the illumination device is also equipped with a sliding mechanism that allows adjustment of the alignment between the smartphone's integrated camera lens and the illumination device's shooting aperture. While this solution allows adjustment of the smartphone's position relative to the illumination device, the sliding mechanism unnecessarily adds complexity. Furthermore, this solution suffers from essentially the same limitations as the solution described in international application No. WO 2015 / 132785 A1.

[0014] US Patent Application No. US 2014 / 0086567 A1 describes an imaging device for capturing images of an object located inside a substantially enclosed chamber. This imaging device is specifically designed for capturing images of fiduciary or identity documents requiring authentication, such as banknotes, driver's licenses, passports, etc.

[0015] US Patent Application No. US 2020 / 0173930 A1 describes an imaging device for jewelry / precious metal articles and gemstones. This imaging device comprises a body defining an enclosure within which the object to be visualized is placed on a support, as well as a

[0016] B8301-WO_20250828_Specification_for_extension August 28, 2025: Arm, preferably flexible / articulated, capable of supporting an ad-hoc portable camera, such as a smartphone or tablet equipped with an integrated camera. The use of a flexible arm allows, in particular, the portable camera to be positioned in various ways within the enclosure relative to the object to be viewed.

[0017] Therefore, there remains a real need for an illumination device capable of enabling the shooting of objects which remedies the disadvantages and limitations of known solutions.

[0018] DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0019] A general object of the present invention is to remedy the various problems and limitations of illumination devices for photographing objects in the prior art.

[0020] More particularly, one aim of the present invention is to propose such a solution which is more flexible in use and which combines the possibility of taking pictures of the desired object indifferently by means of a digital camera of the illumination device or by means of an ad-hoc portable shooting device, such as a smartphone or a digital tablet integrating a camera, or even a digital camera, or any other ad-hoc portable shooting device.

[0021] Another objective of the present invention is to propose such a solution which is in particular compatible with the use of a variety of ad-hoc portable shooting devices.

[0022] Yet another objective of the present invention is to propose such a solution which makes it possible to ensure an optimal level of illumination of the object to be examined, regardless of the shooting device used.

[0023] Yet another objective of the present invention is to provide such a solution which is reasonably easy to implement.

[0024] The present invention addresses at least some of these objectives by providing an illumination device for photographing objects whose characteristics are listed in claim 1.

[0025] Advantageous and / or preferred embodiments of the invention are the subject of dependent claims.

[0026] B8301-WO_20250828_Specification_for_extension August 28, 2025 Other aspects and advantages of the invention are set forth later in this description.

[0029] B8301-WO_20250828_Specification_for_extension August 28, 2025 METHODS OF IMPLEMENTATION OF THE INVENTION

[0030] The present invention will be described with reference to various modes and variant embodiments as illustrated in particular by Figures 1A-C to 2A-D.

[0031] It will be understood that the scope of the invention encompasses all combinations and sub-combinations of the features of the invention described herein as defined by the attached claims.

[0032] Figures 1A-C are schematic perspective views of an illumination device, designated collectively by the numeral 10, according to a preferred embodiment of the invention. The configuration of this illumination device 10 is generally analogous to that of the illumination device described in International Application No. WO 2022 / 162044 A1 filed by the Applicant, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. In this particular case, the illumination device 10 generally has the appearance of a box or case comprising a body CP forming a casing and defining a substantially enclosed internal working volume 200 in which an object to be examined, not shown (such as a timepiece or piece of jewelry), can be manipulated by an operator. In the illustrated example, this internal working volume 200 is delimited by a base, side walls or panels, and an upper portion of the body CP.The internal working volume 200 is substantially closed in that the CP body has at least one OF opening sized to allow the operator to pass at least one hand through the OF opening, into the internal working volume 200.

[0033] The OF opening advantageously extends across substantially the entire width of a front portion of the CP body and is at least partially (preferably completely) closable by means of a movable shutter panel PF, here pivotally mounted on the CP body, as illustrated. In an alternative embodiment, the movable shutter panel PF could be omitted, made in several parts, or only partially close the OF opening. Alternatively, a removable drawer could be provided, including at least part of the bottom of the CP body, to allow for the insertion or removal of the object to be examined (such as a set of jewelry).

[0034] B8301-WO_20250828_Specification_for_extension August 28, 2025 The CP body may be made of any suitable material, including wood, metal, plastic, or composite material, or even a combination of these materials. The CP body may also be at least partially covered with any suitable covering, in particular leather (or imitation leather) or fabric.

[0035] Similar to the illumination device described in International Application No. WO 2022 / 162044 A1, the CP body is equipped with an illumination system, designated by the reference ILM, which is not visible in Figures 1A-C because it is located inside the CP body to ensure adequate illumination of the object to be examined (this ILM illumination system is partially visible in the cross-sectional view of Figure 2C). The illumination device 10 also includes a digital camera CD, visible in Figures 1B and 1C (as well as in Figures 2A-D), for capturing images of the object to be examined, illuminated by the ILM illumination system under the desired conditions.

[0036] The ILM illumination system will not be described in detail here, as it is already known as such. Reference can therefore be made to the elements already described in this regard in International Application No. WO 2022 / 162044 A1. It suffices to understand that the ILM illumination system comprises any suitable light source(s), including for illumination under white light or ultraviolet light (in particular for highlighting a phosphorescent effect on certain portions of watch parts, especially elements coated with Super-Luminova® or other phosphorescent pigments typically found on watch dials or bezels). In practice, the ILM lighting system advantageously comprises a combination of various light sources, including in particular LS spotlights as well as a system for producing diffuse illumination classically comprising a plurality of light sources (such as light-emitting diodes, or "LEDs") cooperating with a light-diffusing element, designated by the reference DIF. This light-diffusing element DIF can in particular be made of an acrylic material such as PMMA, as available on the market under the name PERSPEX® or similar (PERSPEX® being a registered trademark of Perspex International).

[0037] B8301-WO_20250828_Specification_for_extension August 28, 2025 Limited (UK), an affiliate of 3A Composites). The ILM illumination system may include further means of illumination, including means for inducing a scintillation effect on the object to be examined, particularly for highlighting precious or semi-precious stones.

[0038] The CP body of the illumination device 10 is also configured to accommodate an ad-hoc portable camera, such as a smartphone or tablet with an integrated camera, or a digital camera. The CP body includes a shooting aperture AP arranged to be substantially aligned with a lens of the ad-hoc portable camera when positioned on the CP body. As an example, Figure 1C schematically illustrates the use of a smartphone SP as an ad-hoc portable camera in two distinct positions and orientations.

[0039] According to the invention, the CP body is more particularly provided with a movable hatch TM (optionally detachable) on which the digital camera CD is mounted. This movable hatch TM can occupy at least two positions, namely a first position, or working position, illustrated in Figure 1A, in which the movable hatch TM covers the shooting port AP so that a lens OB of the digital camera CD is aligned with the shooting port AP, and at least a second position, or withdrawn position, illustrated in Figures 1B and 1C (as well as in Figures 2A-D), in which the movable hatch TM places the digital camera CD in a recessed position so as to free the shooting port AP and allow the lens of the ad-hoc portable shooting device to be aligned with the shooting port AP.

[0040] It will therefore be understood that the invention advantageously allows the use of either the digital camera CD of the illumination device 10 or the ad-hoc portable camera to take photographic or videographic images of the object to be examined. The images thus captured can be transmitted to any associated display device, such as a digital tablet TA placed on the body CP (or any other display device), for sharing and transmission to viewers, for example, live.

[0041] B8301-WO_20250828_Specification_for_extension August 28, 2025 (or even delayed), in particular by video streaming via a computer retransmission network.

[0042] In the illustrated example, the movable hatch TM is advantageously pivotally mounted on the body CP to allow switching between the first and second positions. The body CP further includes a movable panel PM pivotally mounted on the body CP, the movable panel PM being able to occupy at least two positions, namely a first position, or closed position, shown in Figure 1A, in which the movable panel PM is folded down onto the body CP and covers the movable hatch TM in its working position, and at least a second position, or open position, shown in Figures 1B and 1C (as well as in Figures 2A-D), in which the movable panel PM is moved out of the path of the movable hatch TM and allows the movable hatch TM to move into its second position.

[0043] This PM movable panel advantageously provides, in its second position, a support for a TA display device, such as a digital tablet or a display screen. The inner face of the PM movable panel can also be equipped, as illustrated, with a retaining device DR capable of selectively and removably retaining the TA display device on the PM movable panel. This can, in particular, be a clamp system providing lateral retention of the TA display device, for example, by clamping the lower and upper portions of the TA display device as illustrated in the cross-sectional view of Figure 2C.

[0044] The inner face of the PM mobile panel can also be provided, as illustrated, with a backlighting device (here comprising two RE backlighting elements placed on lateral portions of the inner face of the PM mobile panel) in order to selectively illuminate the face of an operator using the illumination device 10.

[0045] The aforementioned PM movable panel is optional, however, and the lighting device according to the invention could therefore be entirely without it. Indeed, according to one embodiment, the TM movable hatch itself could serve as the upper panel.

[0046] B8301-WO_20250828_Specification_for_extension August 28, 2025 The CP body is advantageously configured, in the vicinity of the AP shooting port, to present a support surface 100 suitable for receiving the ad-hoc portable shooting device (in particular the aforementioned SP smartphone) in a stable position. In the illustrated example, the support surface 100 is substantially horizontal, but it could optionally be inclined. This support surface 100 is preferably provided with a fastening system ensuring that the ad-hoc portable shooting device SP is retained on the CP body. In the illustrated example, the support surface 100 incorporates a pair of magnetic elements MG suitable for cooperating with the SP smartphone to ensure its retention. These are, for illustrative purposes, ring-shaped magnetic elements compatible with Apple Inc.'s MagSafe® system.which advantageously allow the SP smartphone to be positioned in a predetermined position on the CP body. Although visible in Figure 1C, it will be understood that these magnetic elements MG (and their support) can advantageously be concealed for aesthetic reasons under a suitable coating applied to the support surface 100. Alternatively, the fastening system could include, either individually or in combination, one or more mechanical elements, such as clips or other mechanical fastening elements capable of cooperating with the SP smartphone (directly or via an adapter case).

[0047] The CP body and the TM movable cover can advantageously be configured so that, in the first position of the TM movable cover, the CP body and the TM movable cover together form a substantially flat support surface 150. In this way, the TM movable cover does not compromise, in its working position, the overall ergonomics or aesthetics of the lighting device 10.

[0048] As an improvement, the support surface 150, in particular on either side of the movable hatch TM, or any other suitable support surface of the CP body in the vicinity of the AP shooting port, can be configured to receive (removable) mounting screws 155, in particular 1 / 4” screws, for a digital camera or a digital camera mount. These mounting screws 155 can in particular be inserted

[0049] B8301-WO_20250828_Specification_for_extension August 28, 2025 selectively in two orifices or inserts provided for this purpose, here in the support surface 150, as illustrated in Figures 1C and 2A-D.

[0050] As a refinement, the inner face, designated TMa, of the movable hatch TM can advantageously be substantially reflective so that the operator can see himself in reflection.

[0051] Furthermore, it is possible to configure the illumination device 10 so that the function of the CD digital camera is automatically deactivated as soon as the TM movable hatch is placed in its second, removed position. Alternatively, in the second position of the TM movable hatch, the CD digital camera could remain functional in order to capture images of the operator.

[0052] Advantageously, the objective lens OB of the CD digital camera can be surrounded by a section 300—here circular in shape—arranged to fit, in the first position of the movable hatch TM, inside an opening 400 in the light-diffusing element DIF, and substantially obstruct this opening 400. This section 300 can also be provided with a masking zone designed to reduce the presence of the CD digital camera's OB objective reflected off the object being examined, as shown with reference to Figures 11 and 12 of International Patent No. WO 2022 / 162044 A1. This masking zone can alternatively be partially or completely located on an inner face of the light-diffusing element DIF, around the working position of the CD digital camera's OB objective.

[0053] It will be understood in general that various modifications and / or improvements obvious to a person skilled in the art can be made to the embodiments described in this description without departing from the scope of the invention defined by the attached claims.

[0054] For example, in one embodiment, the lighting device could have a shape other than that of a box whose body defines a substantially enclosed internal working volume. The body of the lighting device could thus be either bottomless or equipped with a removable bottom, which could, for example, take the form of a removable drawer.

[0055] B8301-WO_20250828_Specification_for_extension August 28, 2025 As an alternative, the base could therefore be detachable from the rest of the body (or even omitted completely) so as to configure the lighting device like a lamp that can be manipulated as desired by the operator. The invention therefore also encompasses any portable version of the lighting device, with or without a base.

[0056] It is also possible to configure the movable hatch so that it can be selectively detached from the body so that it can possibly be stored separately, with the digital camera carried by this hatch.
