Description

PATENTOLAP.P0009WOPCT PATENT APPLICATION forTREATMENT OF HAIR TO STRENGTHEN AND RETAIN SHAPE OF HAIR byMatthew CORDESMona VAIDYA andLavinia POPESCU299472458.1 - 1 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED PATENT APPLICATIONS

[0001] This application claims the benefit of United States Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 687,082, filed August 26, 2024. The contents of the referenced patent application is incorporated into the present application by reference.FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0002] This invention general relates to the field of personal care methods and products that include hair treatments. In one aspect, the invention includes a multi-step process of applying a peptide containing composition to hair followed with in situ oxidization of the peptide, which can have beneficial results to the hair (e.g., curl retention, stronger hair, decreased tangling, and / or reduced hair frizziness or hair fly-aways). In one aspect, the invention includes applying one or more than one composition to hair to treat a hair, which can have beneficial results to the hair (e.g., curl retention, stronger hair, decreased tangling, and / or reduced hair frizziness or hair fly-aways).BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0003] Hair care and styling products can be useful to improve the appearance of hair. For instance, such products can create the appearance of more voluminous hair, more shiny hair, and / or can change the shape of hair (e.g., introducing curls or straightening hair). Some known methods to introduce these appearances in hair include heat treatment, color treatment, chemical treatment, and / or exposing hair to ultraviolet light or radiation.. While these treatments can provide for a desired appearance, the treated hair oftentimes becomes damaged and can suffer from dryness, brittleness or reduced strength, increased rough surface texture, loss of color, loss of natural shape, decreased luster, and / or stiffness.

[0004] There have been attempts to mitigate damage to hair from hair treatment processes (e.g., introduction of curls, straightening hair, color change, etc.). In one example, compositions formulated as solutions, foams, gels, or emulsions can oftentimes include ingredients to help treat the damaged or processed hair. Unfortunately, these compositions can result in greasy hair, weighed down hair, and / or sticky or tacky hair. Ultimately, current hair treatment formulations used to mitigate damage to hair processing techniques may exacerbate the hair damage and / or have a negative effect on the tactile properties of the hair.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0005] A solution has been identified to at least one or more of the aforementioned problems associated with hair treatment processes. In one aspect, the solution can include a299472458.1 - 2 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125multi-step process of (1) applying a non-oxidized active agent to the hair (e.g., PB-300 peptide) and (2) in situ oxidation (e.g., with hydrogen peroxide) of the active agent (e.g., PB-300 peptide) in the hair. With wishing to be bound by theory, it is believed that in situ oxidation of the active agent while the active agent is in contact with the hair can activate the active agent so as to immediately perform its beneficial hair care properties as soon as it becomes activated. By comparison, it is believed that oxidation of the active agent followed by subsequent application of the oxidized active agent to the hair can potentially cause reduced efficacy of the active agent through degradation of the oxidized active agent prior to being applied to hair. It is also believed that in situ oxidation of the active agent can possibly also result in oxidation of at least a portion of the hair; however, in some instances, less amount of agent used to oxidize the active agent is used in comparison to an amount of agent used to oxidize hair when bleaching hair, straightening curly hair, and / or curl straight hair, etc. In another aspect, the process of the present invention can include at least a third step (3), which includes application of a hair binding agent (e.g., bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate) to the hair. Step (3) can be performed during or after step (2) is performed. In additional to the increased effectiveness / reduced degradation of the active agent, the two and / or three step process of the present invention can increase curl retention, increase strength to reduce breakage of the hair, decrease tangling, and / or reduce hair frizziness and / or hair fly-aways, without decreasing hair tensile strength. In one aspect, the solution can include application of the third composition to the hair. In some aspects, the compositions and / or methods herein (1) increase curl retention in hair; (2) increase strength of the hair to reduce breakage of the hair; (3) not negatively effect the hair shafts tensile strength; (4) decrease hair tangling; and / or (5) reduce the appearance of hair frizziness and / or hair fly-aways.

[0006] In some instances, a first composition containing PB-300 peptide is disclosed. The first composition may contain PB-300 peptide and any other ingredient disclosed herein at a concentration of 0.00000001 to 99.99999999 wt. % based on the weight of the first composition. [0117] In some instances, the third composition covalently binds latent free thiols in the hair. The thiols remain bound for at least 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 days, or 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 10, 11, or 12 weeks. The binding reaction is a stable reaction, such that the thiols may remain bound even if subjected to a hair coloring treatment (simultaneous or subsequent to the binding reaction).4. Chemical Treatment of Hair with a Reducing Agent

[0118] In one embodiment, prior to treatment with the method and / or composition, the hair has been subjected to a reducing agent used for waving (also referred to herein as hair perming or permanent waves), curling, and / or straightening of the hair. a. Apply a Reducing Agent to the Hair

[0119] The first step in waving, curling, or straightening hair may be breaking the cysteine disulfide bonds to form free thiol moieties. The process for breaking the cysteine disulfide bonds is via application of a reducing agent. The process for applying the reducing agent involves following normal perming or hair straightening procedures, that are known to those skilled in the art. For example, to perm a hair, the hair is first washed and set on perm rods of various sizes. Second, a reducing agent, such as thioglycolate reducing solution or lotion, is applied to the hair. The hair is allowed to set for a specified period of time, and then the thioglycolate solution is rinsed from the hair.

[0120] The application of hydrogen peroxide in the process of waving, curling, or straightening is optional. In some processes, such as when treating previously chemically treated hair, hydrogen peroxide is generally not used. In other processes, such as when perming virgin hair, hydrogen peroxide may be added. In these embodiments, hydrogen peroxide is typically added after the reducing agent is rinsed out. Then the hydrogen peroxide is rinsed from the hair prior to the method and / or composition. b. Apply the Method(s) and / or Composition(s)

[0121] Subsequent to the reducing treatment, one or more of the first, second, and third composition is / are applied to the hair. Although the methods and / or compositions are typically applied on the same day as treatment with the reducing agent, they may be applied later, such as within 1 to 2 weeks following treatment with the reducing agent.

[0122] In some instances, the hair is washed or rinsed subsequent to the application of the methods and / or compositions after the treatment period is over if a treatment period is used. The hair may be rinsed and subsequently washed immediately (e.g. within 10, 15, 25, 30, 45, 60 seconds (one minute), two minutes, three minutes, four, or five minutes following299472458.1 - 43 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125application) after final application of the composition(s). Alternatively the hair may be rinsed and / or washed within about 3 hours following application, such as 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 25 minutes, 30 minutes, 35 minutes, 40 minutes, 45 minutes, 50 minutes, 55 minutes, 1 hour, 1 hour and 5 minutes, 1 hour and 10 minutes, 1 hour and 15 minutes, 1 hour and 20 minutes, 1 hour and 25 minutes, 1 hour and 30 minutes, 1 hour and 35 minutes, 1 hour and 40 minutes, 1 hour and 45 minutes, 1 hour and 50 minutes, or 1 hour and 55 minutes, 2 hours, 2 hours and 5 minutes, 2 hours and 10 minutes, 2 hours and 15 minutes, 2 hours and 20 minutes, 2 hours and 25 minutes, 2 hours and 30 minutes, 2 hours and 35 minutes, 2 hours and 40 minutes, 2 hours and 45 minutes, 2 hours and 50 minutes, 2 hours and 55 minutes, or 3 hours.

[0123] Alternately, the hair does not have to be washed or rinsed subsequent to application of the compositions and / or methods. In some instances, the first composition is not completely rinsed and / or washed from the hair before application of the second composition. In some instances, the first composition is not completely rinsed and / or washed from the hair before application of the third composition. In some instances, the second composition is not completely rinsed and / or washed from the hair before application of the third composition. In some instances, the first composition and the second composition are not completely rinsed and / or washed from the hair before application of the third composition.

[0124] The compositions described herein improve hair quality, such as appearance (e.g., sheen) and feel, and decrease hair breakage without decreasing strength (e.g., tensile strength) when the hair is subjected to subsequent treatments, such as coloring.

[0125] In some embodiments, hair breakage decreases by 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, or 75% or higher after treatment with the method(s) and / or composition(s) compared to untreated hair from the same individual. Hair breakage is a significant problem encountered during coloring and other treatments.5. Apply Coloring Formulation to the Hair

[0126] In some instances, the methods and / or compositions are applied to color treated and / or colored hair, such as dyed hair. In some instances, the hair is color treated and / or colored subsequent to the application of the method(s) and / or composition(s).

[0127] Coloring formulation are generally applied to an individual's hair following normal hair coloring procedures that are known to those skilled in the art. Typically, hair color treatments include two complementary processes: bleaching the hair's natural pigment and / or other artificial pigments present in the hair, and diffusion of dye precursors into the hair,299472458.1 - 44 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125followed by coupling reactions that result in the formation of chromophores within the hair shaft, which are too large to diffuse out of the hair. The hair coloring formulation may be a highlighting formulation, such as formed by mixing bleach powder and developer. More complex colors may contain several precursors and many couplers, and may involve multiple reactions.

[0128] The dye precursors may contain several ingredients, each with different functions. The first ingredient is usually an alkalizing agent (usually ammonia and / or an ammonia substitute, such as monoethanol amine [MEA]). The alkalizing agent serves a number of roles in the hair colorant process including swelling the hair fiber to aid in diffusion of the dye precursors. The dye precursors generally include p-diamines and p-aminophenols. Precursors are oxidized to active intermediates once they have penetrated the hair shaft. Intermediates then react with color couplers to create wash resistant dyes. More specifically, the intermediates, in the presence of an oxidant, couple with another oxidation dye intermediate molecule to form a large fused ring color compound within the hair shaft. The precursor intermediate should penetrate the hair shaft prior to the coupling reaction since the fused ring product is too large to penetrate the hair shaft. Couplers modify the color produced by the oxidation of precursor compounds. The primary difference between demi-permanent and permanent products is the alkalizing agent and the concentration of peroxide. The cuticle does not swell as greatly with demi-permanent dyes, making dye penetration less efficient compared to permanent coloring products.

[0129] Several coloring formulations use a reducing agent, such as sodium bisulfate, to break disulfide bonds in the hair, allowing deeper penetration of the hair coloring dyes into the hair. Specifically, the method includes reducing some of the disulfide linkages of the cysteine in the hair shafts to thiol groups while breaking hydrogen bonds. The reducing process changes the chemical and cosmetic characteristics of the hair, which are undesirable.

[0130] The hair dyeing process may be followed by a shampoo and conditioning treatment, a neutralizing rinse or an acid balanced shampoo containing in addition to cationic or amphoteric surfactants, cation-active emollients and quaternary polymers. Alternately, the hair dyeing process may be followed by application of the method(s) and / or composition(s) described herein, before and / or after a shampoo and / or conditioning treatment. a. Applying Binding Formulation

[0131] The method(s) and / or composition(s) may be applied simultaneously with hair coloring formulation or subsequent to the application of the hair coloring formulation. For299472458.1 - 45 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125example, the third composition may be mixed with the hair coloring treatment and the mixture, containing both the third composition and the hair coloring treatment, may be applied to the hair.

[0132] Alternatively, subsequent to coloring the hair, the method(s) and / or composition(s) is / are applied to the hair. Although the methods and / or compositions are typically applied on the same day as coloring the hair, they may be applied later, such as within 1 to 2 weeks following coloring the hair.

[0133] In some instances, the hair is washed or rinsed subsequent to the coloring of the hair and before application of the methods and / or compositions. The hair may be rinsed and subsequently washed immediately (e.g., within 10, 15, 25, 30, 45, 60 seconds (one minute), two minutes, three minutes, four, or five minutes following application) after final application of the composition(s).

[0134] Alternately, the hair does not have to be washed or rinsed subsequent to coloring the hair.

[0135] The compositions described herein improve hair quality, such as appearance (e.g., sheen) and feel and decrease hair breakage without decreasing dry strength (e.g., tensile strength) when the hair is subjected to subsequent treatments, such as coloring.

[0136] In some embodiments, hair breakage decreases by 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, or 75% or higher after treatment with the method(s) and / or composition(s) compared to untreated hair from the same individual. Hair breakage is a significant problem encountered during coloring and other treatments.

[0137] If the first, second, and / or third composition is combined with the hair coloring treatment and applied as a mixture to the hair, then the mixture remains on the hair as long as needed for the hair coloring treatment. Typically, the mixture is applied for approximately 10 minutes. The mixture is removed from the hair in accordance with standard methods for hair299472458.1 - 46 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125coloring treatments, e.g., rinse and shampoo, approximately 10 minutes after applying the mixture.

[0138] The composition(s) may be rinsed from the hair after application. The hair may be rinsed and subsequently washed immediately (e.g., within 10 to 15 seconds following application) after final application of the composition(s). In some instances, the hair is rinsed and / or washed about 10 minutes or later after the final application of the composition(s), such as about 15 minutes to about 30 minutes.V. Kits

[0148] A non-limiting example of a method disclosed herein using non-limiting examples of a first composition, a second composition, and a third composition disclosed herein. It was determined that the method does not change the dry color of dyed hair, decreases the amount of hair breakage, increases the retention of the styled shape of the hair (such as curled hair), decreases the frizzing of hair, and decreases the amount of knots formed in hair / the friction when combing wet hair without decreasing strength of the hair (tensile strength).

[0149] Color Retention: Hair was tested to demonstrate the manner by which the treatment method using the first, second, and third composition changes the color of hair with repeated washing via color testing using a Hunterlab Colorimeter.

[0150] 3 g, 8” long, 1” wide Curly multi-ethnic brown tresses (Walker type 3A), 6% bleached and colored with commercially available auburn dye were tested, ten tresses per treatment group. All of the hair was first bleached by contacting the hair with a skeletal 6% hydrogen peroxide solution that has a pH of 10.2 and a temperature of 40° C at 500 ml per 40 tresses for 40 minutes at 40° C with regular agitation and afterwards rinsed twice with water and then placed under running water. All of the tresses were dyed with L’Oreal Preference shade 4R Dark Auburn dye. The color components were combined using the manufacturer’s instructions and mixed. Then 10 g of the mixture was applied to each tress using a brush (5 g on each side of the tress) and massaged thoroughly into the tress. The hair was maintained at 27° C for 20 minutes and massaged at 10 minutes into the 20 minute treatment. The color treated tresses were rinsed out under running water at a temperature of 40° C for 2 minutes or until the water ran clear. The rinsed hair was allowed to rest for at least 12 hours prior to taking post color treatment readings.

[0151] The tresses were divided into two treatment groups, a Method Treated group and a Control group. The Method Treated group tresses were 1) washed with OLAPLEX™ 4C Shampoo by applying the shampoo at 10% by weight of the tresses (0.1 ml / g of hair), massaged for 30 seconds, rested for 5 minutes, and then rinsed for 30 seconds, 2) the first composition of299472458.1 - 50 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125Table 1 was applied to the damp hair at 20% by weight of the tresses (0.2 ml / g of hair), massaged for 30 seconds, and rested for 10 minutes, 3) without rinsing, the second composition of Table 2 was applied to the damp hair by spraying onto the hair three times (top, middle, bottom) from a distance of 6 inches on one side of the tresses and repeated on the other side of the tresses, and rested for 10 minutes, and 4) without rinsing, the third composition of Table 3 was applied to the damp hair at 15% by weight of the tresses, massaged for 30 seconds, and rested and allowed to air dry for 48 hours at 60% relative humidity. A Control group of tresses were washed as described for the Method Treated procedure but used a sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) solution containing 15% SLES, the solution being used at 10% by weight of the tresses for the shampoo, and were treated as described for the Method Treated procedure but used water instead of any of the first, second, or third composition.

[0152] Color was measured after the respective treatments, after ten washes after the treatment, after twelve washes after the treatment, and after fifteen washes after the treatment. For each wash after the treatment, the 15% SLES solution was applied to the tresses at 10% by weight of the tresses, the hair was massaged for 30 seconds, rested for 5 minutes, rinsed for 30 seconds, and air dried for 48 hours at 60% relative humidity. For the color measurements, CIELAB L, a, and b measurements were taken using a Hunter Lab UltraScan VIS colorimeter. “L” refers to the lightness on a scale of 0 to 100, “a” denotes the red-green color range (positive value denotes higher red), and “b” represents the yellow-blue color range (positive value denotes higher yellow). Changes in the color of the tress were calculated using the difference in these parameters relative to the baseline measurement after treatment (e.g., AL*, Aa*, and Ab*). Overall color change, AE was calculated using the following Equation 1.AE = [AL*2+ Aa*2+ Ab*2] Equation 1

[0153] Ten color measurements were performed on each tress (with ten tresses per treatment). JMP™ analytical software was used to calculate the statistics (student’s t-test at 95% confidence level).

[0154] At the ten, twelve, and fifteen wash intervals, there was no statistical difference between Control and the Method Treated hair. This indicates that the method treatment is safe for color-treated hair.

[0155] Hair Breakage: Hair was tested to demonstrate the ability of the treatment method using the first, second, and third composition to protect hair against breakage via repeated grooming.299472458.1 - 51 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125

[0156] 3 g, 8” long, 1” wide Curly multi-ethnic brown tresses (Walker type 3A), 9% bleached were tested, ten tresses per treatment group. All of the hair was first bleached three times by contacting the hair with a 9% hydrogen peroxide solution that has a pH of 10.2 and a temperature of 40° C for 20 minutes at 40° C with regular agitation and rinsed under running water between repeated bleaching and after the third bleaching.

[0157] The tresses were divided into two treatment groups, a Method Treated group and a Control group. The Method Treated group tresses were 1) washed with OLAPLEX™ 4C Shampoo by applying the shampoo at 10% by weight of the tresses (0.1 ml / g of hair), massaged for 30 seconds, rested for 5 minutes, and then rinsed for 30 seconds, 2) the first composition of Table 1 was applied to the damp hair at 20% by weight of the tresses (0.2 ml / g of hair), massaged for 30 seconds, and rested for 10 minutes, 3) without rinsing, the second composition of Table 2 was applied to the damp hair by spraying onto the hair three times (top, middle, bottom) from a distance of 6 inches on one side of the tresses and repeated on the other side of the tresses, and rested for 10 minutes, and 4) without rinsing, the third composition of Table 3 was applied to the damp hair at 15% by weight of the tresses, massaged for 30 seconds, and rested and allowed to air dry for 48 hours at 60% relative humidity. A Control group of tresses were washed as described for the Method Treated procedure but used a sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) solution containing 15% SLES, the solution being used at 10% by weight of the tresses for the shampoo.

[0158] Determining whether the treatment will protect hair against breakage was tested by repeated grooming experiments. The number of broken fibers was recorded as a function of repeated combing / brushing strokes. A treatment that reduces snags, entanglements, and abrasion can lower the number of broken fibers. Hair breakage by dry grooming was measured by using an automatic groomer for a total of 2,000 cycles. Fibers were collected and counted after every 200 cycles. Eight replicates for each sample were performed. The methodology used has been documented in the scientific literature (Evans & Park, A Statistical Analysis of Hair Breakage. II. Repeated Grooming Experiments, JCosmel.Sci.. 61, 439-455, 2010). JMP™ analytical software was used to calculate the statistics (student’s t-test at 95% confidence level). The percentage reduction in breakage was calculated using the following Equation 2.% Reduction in breakage =(1 - (Breakage of Method Treated / Breakage of Control)) x 100 Equation 2

[0159] A statistical reduction in breakage was seen for the Method Treated group compared to the Control group, with the Method Treated showing an over 55% reduction in breakage.299472458.1 - 52 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125

[0160] Tensile Strength: Hair was tested to demonstrate the ability of the treatment method using the first, second, and third composition to not negatively impact the fiber integrity of hair via a miniature tensile tester (MTT) of wet hair.

[0161] 3 g, 8” long, 1” wide Curly multi-ethnic brown tresses (Walker type 3A) were tested, two tresses per treatment group. 50 hair fibers per treatment were evaluated using the MTT.

[0162] The tresses were divided into two treatment groups, a Method Treated group and a Control group.

[0163] Determining whether the treatment will not reduce tensile strength was tested using a Dia-Stron Mini Tensile Tester (MTT). The MTT extends individual hair fibers at a rate of 40 mm / minute until break. The force required over the extension distance of the hair is recorded to create stress-strain curves. The rather complex mechanical properties of hair can be a direct consequence of its composite structure. Changes in these properties can be a reflection of an alteration in structure. The changes may be permanent changes, such as those that result from chemical treatments that deplete strength-supporting bonds; or temporary changes, such as those occurring due to changing levels of plasticization that result from the moisture content of hair being dictated by the relative humidity. Tensile experiments are widely regarded to reflect the properties of the inner-most portions of the hair structure (the cortex) and may have no significant contribution from the outer cuticle layer. Instead, the outer portions of the hair structure are generally considered to play a greater role in bending and twisting (torsion). Therefore, surface coatings or materials that only penetrate the outer portions of the hair may be expected to register larger effects in bending and twisting (torsion) than in tensile strength.299472458.1 - 53 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125JMP™ analytical software was used to calculate the statistics (student’s t-test at 95% confidence level). A variety of tensile parameters were reported to illustrate the overall condition of the hair.

[0164] The results show that the Method Treated group does not lead to statistical changes in the tensile properties of hair. This indicates that the methods and compositions herein do not negatively impact the mechanical properties of hair. The results show that there are no statistical differences in cross sectional area mean. The results show there are no statistical differences in break stress that represents the force / area needed to break the hair fiber: the higher break stress, the stronger the fiber. The results show there are no statistical differences in the slope of the initial portion of the stress-strain curve adjusted for the cross-sectional area, termed the Young’s modulus. The Young’s modulus represents the elastic stiffness of hair. Also, the results show there are no statistical differences in the break load.

[0165] Curl Droop: Hair was tested to demonstrate the ability of the treatment method using the first, second, and third composition to increase hold of a curl over the course of 8 hours via measurement of tress length using the curl droop method.

[0166] 1 g, 8” long European medium brown straight hair were tested, eight tresses per treatment group.

[0167] The tresses were divided into two treatment groups, a Method Treated group and a Control group.

[0168] Determining whether the treatment will prevent the loss of a curl was tested by measuring the length of the tresses over time. The length of each tress was measured after299472458.1 - 54 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125removing from curling overnight by snaking the tresses around large pegs and allowing to equilibrate in 30% relative humidity, and measured after one, two, four, and eight hours of exposure to 60% relative humidity. JMP™ analytical software was used to calculate the statistics (student’s t-test at 95% confidence level). The length of individual tresses is determined using custom written software operating under LAB VIEW™ v8.5. The amount of curl droop for each tress was calculated using Equation 3 where LT = length at any given time; Lo= initial time point length of the tress; and LoL_ = length of the tress in its longest, straight position.Amount of Curl Droop = ((LT - Lo) / (LoL_ - Lo)) Equation 3

[0169] A statistical reduction of loss of curl was seen for the Method Treated group compared to the Control group at all time points measured from 1 hour on. The Method Treated showed an over 55% curl retention at 1 hours of exposure to 60% relative humidity compared to the Control’s under 25 % curl retention at 8 hours of exposure to 60% relative humidity. The Method Treated showed an over 45% curl retention at 8 hours of exposure to 60% relative humidity compared to the Control’s under 20 % curl retention at 8 hours of exposure to 60% relative humidity. This demonstrates the methods and compositions herein ability to retain curl for up to 8 hours in high humidity conditions.

[0170] Hair Frizzing: Hair was tested to demonstrate the ability of the treatment method using the first, second, and third composition to reduce frizzing of hair over the course of 72 hours via measurement of volume of the hair.

[0171] 4 g, 8” long, multi-ethnic frizzy hair (Walker type 3B) were tested, eight tresses per treatment group.

[0172] The tresses were divided into five treatment groups after washing and frizzing to their maximum volume, a Method Treated group with no subsequent washes (Method Treated no wash), a Method Treated group subsequently washed 10 times with a sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) solution containing 15% SLES, the solution being used at 10% by weight of the tresses (Method Treated + 10), a Method Treated group subsequently washed 12 times with a sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) solution containing 15% SLES, the solution being used at 10% by weight of the tresses (Method Treated + 12), a Method Treated group subsequently washed 15 times with a sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) solution containing 15% SLES, the solution being used at 10% by weight of the tresses (Method Treated + 15), and a Control group. The Method Treated groups’ tresses were 1) washed with OLAPLEX™ 4C Shampoo by applying the299472458.1 - 55 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125shampoo at 10% by weight of the tresses (0.1 ml / g of hair), massaged for 30 seconds, rested for 5 minutes, and then rinsed for 30 seconds, 2) the first composition of Table 1 was applied to the damp hair at 20% by weight of the tresses (0.2 ml / g of hair), massaged for 30 seconds, and rested for 10 minutes, 3) without rinsing, the second composition of Table 2 was applied to the damp hair by spraying onto the hair three times (top, middle, bottom) from a distance of 6 inches on one side of the tresses and repeated on the other side of the tresses, and rested for 10 minutes, and 4) without rinsing, the third composition of Table 3 was applied to the damp hair at 15% by weight of the tresses, massaged for 30 seconds, and rested and allowed to air dry for 48 hours at 20% relative humidity. The subsequent washes for the groups that included subsequent washes, were washed the respective number of times by, for each wash, massaging the hair with sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) solution containing 15% SLES, the solution being used at 10% by weight of the tresses, for 30 seconds, resting for 5 minutes, and then rinsing for 30 seconds. After the last wash, the hair was allowed to air dry for 48 hours at 20% relative humidity. A Control group of tresses were washed as described for the Method Treated procedure but used a sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) solution containing 15% SLES, the solution being used at 10% by weight of the tresses for the shampoo.

[0173] Determining whether the treatment will prevent frizzing of hair was tested by measuring the volume of the tresses over time. The volume of each tress was measured after frizzing to their maximum volume then treating according to their respective treatment group. The volume of each tress is then measured initially when exposed to 80% relative humidity, and measured after eight, twenty-four, forty-eight, and seventy-two hours of exposure to 80% relative humidity. JMP™ analytical software was used to calculate the statistics (student’s t- test at 95% confidence level). The volume of individual tresses is determined using custom written software operating under LAB VIEW™ v8.5. The amount of volume for each tress was calculated by counting pixels and the percent reduction in frizz of a tress is obtained by using Equation 4.% Reduction in Frizz = ((Max Frizz-Treatment Frizz) / Max Frizz) x 100 Equation 4

[0174] A statistical reduction frizzing was seen for each of the Method Treated groups compared to the Control group at all time points measured from initial exposure to 80% relative humidity on. For example, the Method Treated no washing showed over 70% frizz reduction at 72 hours of exposure to 80% relative humidity and the Method Treated +15 showed over 50% frizz reduction at 72 hours of exposure to 80% relative humidity even though it was washed 15 times after treatment compared to the Control’s under 45% frizz reduction at 72299472458.1 - 56 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125hours of exposure to 80% relative humidity. As another example, the Method Treated no washing showed over 75% frizz reduction at initial exposure to 80% relative humidity and the Method Treated +15 showed over 50% frizz reduction at initial exposure to 80% relative humidity even though it was washed 15 times after treatment compared to the Control’s under 40% frizz reduction at initial exposure to 80% relative humidity. This demonstrates the methods and compositions herein ability to reduce frizz immediately and for up to 72 hours in high humidity conditions, even through 15 washes.

[0175] Wet Combing: Hair was tested to demonstrate the ability of the treatment method using the first, second, and third composition to smooth damaged hair via wet combing by the Garcia Method.

[0176] 3 g, 8” long, 1” wide Curly multi-ethnic brown tresses (Walker type 3A), 6% bleached were tested, eight tresses per treatment group.

[0177] The tresses were divided into two treatment groups, a Method Treated group and a Control group.

[0178] Determining whether the treatment will smooth the hair was tested by an Instron tensile tester to measure frictional forces while a wet hair tress is pulled through a comb. A treatment that smooths hair can lower the frictional forces. Six replicates for each sample were performed. The methodology used has been documented in the scientific literature (Garcia & Diaz, JSCC, 27, (1976) 379-398). JMP™ analytical software was used to calculate the299472458.1 - 57 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125statistics (student’s t-test at 95% confidence level). The percentage reduction in combing forces was calculated using the following Equation 5.% Reduction in Combing Forces =(1 - (Combing Force of Treatment / Combing Force of Control)) x 100 Equation 5

[0179] A statistical reduction in friction was seen for the Method Treated group compared to the Control group, with the Method Treated showing a 20 or greater % reduction in wet combing force compared with the control. This demonstrates that the methods and compositions herein improve manageability and provide detangling benefits and lower combing friction.C. Example 3 (Clinical Studies)

[0180] In a clinical study, it has been determined that the methods and composition disclosed herein can, among other things, enhance natural wave, curl, coil definition, can help hair look repaired, healthier, and less damaged, and can restore curl elasticity, bounce, and curl retention. A summary of results are found in Tables 4 to 7 and the outline of the clinical study methods and results used to determine the properties of the ingredients are provided below.

[0181] Immediately after treatment stylists and consumers were required to complete a survey about the products’ attributes. Forty-eight hours after treatment, consumers were required to take a second survey about the products’ attributes. Sixty-eight participants between the ages 18-60 completed the study. Individuals with self-perceived light to moderately damaged (chemical, color treated, thermal) type 2A-4C waves, curls and coils- with the focus on type 3 and type 4 participated. 15% of the participants had Type 2B / 2C hair, 65% had Type 3 hair, and 20% had Type 4 hair. Participants did not have straight hair and did not have a permanent straightening service prior to 6 months leading up to the study start date. The hair stylist administering the treatment defined 38% of the participants as having wavy hair, 51% of the participants as having curly hair, and 10% of the participants as having coily hair.

[0182] All participants hair were deeply cleaned with OLAPLEX™ Clarifying Shampoo for up to 5 minutes to remove buildup and damaging impurities. Participants were able to follow the washing with OLAPLEX™ Chelator following the instructions on the product. 31% if the participants used the Chelator.

[0183] In step 1, hair was sectioned into 4 quadrants and the first composition as described in Table 1 was applied in small sections until hair was evenly saturated. Up to 50 ml could be used, with the amount depending on hair length and density. For short lengths, less product299472458.1 - 58 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125was used. For long or dense lengths, more product was needed. The hair was raked through in a downward motion to ensure hair was fully saturated with product. The hair was rested with the product on the hair for 10 minutes and not rinsed.

[0184] In step 2, the hair was sprayed in small sections with the second composition described in Table 2 until the hair was thoroughly saturated. The hair was then scrunched into curls to ensure the product is properly worked through. The hair was rested for 10 minutes and not rinsed.

[0185] In step 3, starting with a small amount, the third composition described in Table 3 was evenly distributed section by section from root to tip. If needed, the hair could be misted with the second composition to re-wet the hair. The hair was then styled with the users desired curl-defining technique. The hair was allowed to air dry (preferably), or be dried by the users preferred drying method. The hair was not washed for at least 48 hours after the treatment.

[0186] The stylists were asked to rate particular attributes of applying the method steps and the products used in the method, the results are shown in Tables 4 and 5. Table 4Table 5299472458.1 - 59 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125

[0187] The participants were asked to rate particular attributes of the results of using the method steps and the products used in the method, the results are shown in Tables 6 and 7.Table 6Table 7299472458.1 - 60 - OLAP.POOQ9WO / 1001359125
