[0080] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EMBODIMENTS
[0081] The present invention relates generally to electronic cigarettes, and specifically to a segmented cigarette aerosol generating article which utilizes a replaceable, disposable, vaporizing cartridge pod, methods and systems for generating and controlling aspects of user experience of electronic cigarettes, and to an electronic cigarette that can be operated only by an authorized user.
[0082] The design and manufacturing of e-cigarette devices presents challenges related to component integration, electrical connections, and the replacement of consumable elements such as e-liquid cartridges. Many existing devices rely on complex connection mechanisms, expensive components like magnets, or spring-loaded contacts that can malfunction when exposed to e-liquid leakage.
[0083] Additionally, the user experience of electronic cigarettes differs substantially from that of traditional cigarette smoking. Many cigarette smokers who attempt to transition to vaping devices find the experience unsatisfactory compared to conventional smoking, often leading them to abandon their efforts to switch to what may be perceived as a less harmful alternative.
[0084] In addition, many e-cigarette systems lack sophisticated user interfaces and monitoring capabilities that could enhance the user experience or provide valuable feedback about usage patterns. The integration of electronic cigarettes with modern mobile computing devices 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC and communication technologies remains underdeveloped, representing a missed opportunity for improved user interaction and device management.
[0085] Another challenge in the electronic cigarette field relates to controlling access to these devices. There are ongoing concerns about unauthorized use, particularly by minors, and attempts to limit access by minors to electronic cigarettes have so far met with only limited success.
[0086] The above challenges are addressed by devices, systems, methods and embodiments which are described below.
[0087] In the following detailed description, specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the disclosure. Figure 8A is a schematic prospective view of a central section denoted 110, of proximal side of a cork portion, denoted 112, of gasket 106. Figure 8B is a schematic prospective view of a distal side of cork portion 112. Figures 9A and 9B are schematic perspective views, from the proximal side and from the distal side, respectively, of distal body 102 of aerosol generating article 100.
[0130] E-cigarette aerosol generating article 100 is constructed and operative in accordance with the invention for heating and evaporating e- liquid, when a user inhales air from device 100. The user inhale air through a proximal mouth end of vaporizing cartridge pod 104, preferably featuring a paper wrapped cigarette-like filter, such as filter 1 14. The e-liquid preferably contains tobacco extract. Article 100 is segmented into distal body 102 and proximal, preferably disposable, vaporizing cartridge pod 104, which are configured to compatibly connect to each other to form a cigar-like rod shaped article 100.
[0131] Distal body 102 is enclosed by elongated shell 116 in which power and control components are housed. Shell 116 includes connection means 118 for guiding proper insertion of cartridge pod 104 within shell 116 and securing pod 104 to shell 116.
[0132] The power component includes a power supply 120 (e.g., an electrical battery, preferably chargeable) having two static contact pins 122 which protrude proximally toward cartridge pod 102 (when connected to 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC body 102). The control components include control electronics, such as circuitry and microprocessor chip 124, and sensor 126 for detecting an action triggered by the user, such as suction, or inhaling action, for activating delivery of power via contact pins 122 to vaporizing cartridge pod 104. Distal body 102 also includes an air conduit or passage for conducting fresh air sucked from the ambient atmosphere to vaporizing cartridge pod 104. The air passage is provided by means of air inlet 128 apertured in the distal side 130 of body 102, an aperture 132 in chip 124, gap 134 between power supply 120 and shell 116, and outlet holes 136 in a proximal partition 138.
[0133] Cartridge pod 104 includes pod housing 140 which envelops pod cavity 142, which is filled up with a saturable absorbent 144 (Figure 7), such as a porous, capillary, or spongy absorbent, configured to retain aerosolforming substrate (e-liquid) soaked therein, wherein the aerosol-forming substrate is a liquid at room temperature. Cartridge pod 104 includes complementary connection means 146 for guiding and securing cartridge pod 104 to shell 116. Cartridge pod 104 includes vapor conduit 108 extending through pod cavity 142 for conducting mixture of air sucked from distal body 102 and vapor of evaporated e-liquid. Vapor conduit 108 includes peripheral apertures 148 facing absorbent 144, as conduit 108 is inserted via bore 150. Apertures 148 are enclosed by e-liquid permeable (felt like) wicking material 152 which is configured to draw e-liquid from absorbent 144 and withstand heating. Cartridge pod includes a heating 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC element such as coil 154, which is operational to heat when powered by power supply 120. Heating element 154 is peripherally disposed (e.g., spirally wound 1.0Q coil, 1.2Q mesh coil) within vapor conduit 108 proximate to peripheral apertures 148, in contact with or embedded within wicking material 152, and features two contact bendable wire legs 156. Wicking material 152 can be in the form of a hollow tube 158 (which can be created by a wound cloth), leaving a duct 160 through which air can be conducted.
[0134] Cartridge pod 104 includes a distal gasket 106, which can consist of a silicone or similarly flexible material, for sealing pod cavity 104. Gasket 106 is operational for securing pod 104 to shell 1 16, for leading, holding and respectively urging two wire legs 156 to be in close contact with two contact pins 122. Cartridge pod 104 includes proximal filter cavity 162 for receiving mouthpiece filter 1 14.
[0135] Distal gasket 106 includes cork portion 112 featuring lateral protrusions 164 for inserting into mating slots 166 in the inner side of the pod cavity wall of housing 140. Cork portion 112 includes proximal integral O-ring flange 168 (Figure 4) which configured to seal against the inner face of the pod cavity wall of housing 166 when inserted therein. Cork portion 112 includes distal integral O-ring flange 170 configured to seal against the inner face of shell 116 when inserted therein. Accordingly, flange 170 serves as part of connection means 118 by securing pod 104 to shell 116. Cork portion 112 includes air cork duct 172 for leading air from distal body 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC
[0136] 102 to vapor conduit 108. Cork portion 1 12 includes two cork orifices 174 for leading two wire legs 156 from coil 154 to distal face 176 of gasket 106. Cork portion 112 includes two sockets 178 in which the wire legs 156 can be extended for receiving contact pins 122 when pushed therein and thereby operational for urging close contact between wire legs 156 and pins 122. Cork portion 112 includes two respective notches 180 grooved on the outer distal face 176 of gasket 106, respectively leading the bent wire legs 156 from two orifices 174 to two sockets 180, thus allowing easy installation of the wires without requiring any welding.
[0137] Connection means 118 further feature proximal tubular (e.g., cylindrical) shell wall extension 182 defining a tubular receptacle 184 in which a distal tubular portion 186 of pod 104, which may be narrower than the remaining proximal portion 188 of pod 104, and thereby can be inserted into and received by receptacle 184. The wider proximal portion 186 defines a shouldering rim 190 that cannot be inserted into receptacle 184 and thus serves to stop excessive insertion of portion 186 into receptacle 184.
[0138] Further features of connection means 118 include two longitudinal tapering notches 192 carved in the proximal end of the tubular shell wall extension 182, and complementary connection means 146 include two longitudinal tapering bulges peripherally protruding from outer wall of the distal tubular portion 186 of pod 104 which are operational to be compatibly received into the two longitudinal mating notches 192 for guiding 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC pod 104, such that two contact pins 122 are directed to insert into corresponding sockets 178, for contacting two wire legs 156. Connection means 1 18 together with the springy nature of gasket 106 are configured to direct pod 104 and body 102 to connect with pins 122 aligned to insert into sockets 178 without requiring installation of expensive magnets, without requiring spring-pins which are prone to malfunction due to oily e-liquid leaks which penetrate spring housings, and thus provide loose contact, and without requiring expensive welding of wiring at the contact points - as is commonly applied in conventional segmented vapes, and therefore overcomes shortcomings of conventional vape devices.
[0139] Aerosol generating article 100 includes a mouthpiece filter 114 which can be inserted into the filter cavity 162. Filter 114 may include a paper wrapped cigarette-like filter to provide a user experience which is closer to smoking a conventional cigarette. Filter 114 may include a central air and vapor duct, as no real smoke is evaporated, and accordingly - despite the terminology of a “filter”, filter 114 may merely serve as a mouthpiece that conducts air and vapor without any filtering function. Filter 114 may contain fragrances, or flavors, which can be released as air and vapor pass through filter 114, and inhaled by the user - and therefore can serve to modify the user experience of inhaling, tasting and smelling the vapor. The flavors or fragrances can be embedded in filter 144 by absorption or by virtue of a flavor / fragrance capsule that bursts when the filter is squeezed, for releasing the flavor / fragrance. 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC
[0140] For example, if the vapor is effective to restore the taste and smell of a known product of cigarette or tobacco brand, the fragrances or flavors in filter 114 may add some distinct character (e.g., menthol, cherry) similar to variation marketed by the tobacco brand. Filter 114 may be selectively replaced by the user, either to refresh the flavor or fragrance which have dissipated from a used filter, or to change the added flavor or fragrance, or as a hygienic measure of a clean or sterile interface with the mouth of the user, specially if more than one user use the article.
[0141] Cartridge pod 104 can be segmented by the user from body 102, and is replaceable by another similar pod, either when depleted from e- liquid or if the user desires to select different vapors. Pod 104 may be refillable, but is preferably disposable - and may be designed to prevent refilling. For example, opening of pod 104 can induce tearing of legs 156.
[0142] Pod 104 can contain for example 2 ml of e-liquid which is comparable to 2 conventional packs of 20 cigarettes. It is estimated that 1 ml can produce vapor for about 200 puffs of the user. It is estimated that 10 puffs are equivalent to smoking 1 cigarette, or 200 puffs are equivalent to 20 cigarettes. Accordingly, if disposable pod 104 contains 2 ml, it may be comparable to 2 conventional packs of 20 cigarettes
[0143] Vapor conduit 108 includes proximal truncated conical head 194 for facilitating insertion of the conduit into bore 150 which extends along absorbent 144, without penetration of e-liquid, which is soaked in absorbent 144, into conduit 108. 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC
[0144] Pod housing 140 includes an air outlet 196 featuring an inwardly sprawling shoulder 198 at the end of filter cavity 162, which is configured to limit insertion of filter 114 through filter cavity 162 and to engage tip 200 of conical head 194 of vapor conduit 108 for sealing pod cavity 142.
[0145] Heating element 154 can be an inductor coil, wherein vapor conduit 108 includes at least one susceptor element configured to be heated by inductor coil 154 when fed by power supply 120. Power supply 120 may be configured to provide a high frequency oscillating current to inductor coil 154.
[0146] The air conduit or passage in body 102 can include at least one partition, such as partitions 138 and 202, with at least one air passage opening, such as openings 204, configured to moderate air stream, for imitating resistance of air passage in a cigarette. This air conduit in body 102 can includes a chamber, such as chamber 206 defined by at least one partition, such as partitions 138 and 202 with at least one air passage opening, such as openings 204, wherein sensor 126 is a pressure sensor disposed in chamber 206 (or on a partition such as 138) and is operational for detecting suction created by an inhaling action of the user. Chamber 206 also serves to contain absorbent 208 which is operative to soak and contain e-liquid, similar to absorbent 144, as a safety measure in case of leakage of e-liquid into body 102.
[0147] Reference is now made to Figure 16, in which method 500 of operating an e-cigarette aerosol generating article having a distal body and 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC a proximal vaporizing cartridge pod detachably connected to each other, such article 100 described above, is disclosed. Many cigarette smokers, in an attempt to quit smoking and reduce health hazards associated with smoke, turn to vaping, wherein an aerosol generating device is applied for heating and evaporating e-liquid for inhaling by the user. However, such attempts often end up in disappointment, due to the very different user vaping experience, which falls short of satisfying the users, who often resort to cigarette smoking. 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC

[0227] In some embodiments, the e-liquid contains tobacco extracts.
[0228] According to an aspect of the invention, an e-liquid heating regime follows the respiratory process of inhalation and exaltation. When 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC smoking or vaping the entire cycle of inhalation and exhalation of a typical user is usually completed in several seconds, resulting in a typical respiratory rate of several breaths per minute. Typically, inhalation is an active process that takes about 2 seconds, and this is the phase of vapor intake (or cigarette smoke). During inhalation, in embodiments according to the invention, a dynamic heating regime that varies in time is applied. In some embodiments, the heating regime may imitate the dynamic heating process characterizing smoking a cigarette. In other embodiments, the heating regime varies in correlation to the different stages of the inhalation process.
[0229] Reference is now made to Figure 1 , which is a schematic cross- sectional view of an e-cigarette aerosol generating article 300, constructed and operative in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. Aerosol generating article 300 is operational for heating and evaporating e- liquid when a user inhales air through proximal mouth end 321 of article 300. Aerosol generating article 300 includes:

[0235] Article 300 may include detachably connectable parts, denoted by separation dashed line 325, such as body 322 and a pod section 324, which terminates in mouthpiece 321 featuring filter 346, or other mouthpiece, through which a user inhales a vaporized e-liquid. Body 322 comprises battery 326 and control circuitry 328, which is shown in an inset and described below in greater detail. Pod 324 comprises reservoir 330, containing the e-liquid, heating coil 332, which vaporizes the e-liquid when actuated by the user, and vapor conduit 323 which extends through pod cavity 330 for conducting mixture of ambient fresh air (enter through inlet 327) and vapor of evaporated e-liquid - which enters into conduit 323 via its interface with reservoir 330 (the interface is permeable to the vapor.
[0236] The e-liquid of article 300 can contain tobacco extracts. It is noted that in addition to substituting smoking by inhaling vapor of e-liquid 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC containing tobacco extract, the e-liquid may include any authorized to use substance applicable to consumption by the article, such as prescription drugs, narcotics, dosage sensitive health aids, medications, pharmaceutical compounds and other substances intended for the treatment of psychological, mood or mental conditions, or psychiatric or health condition, and therefore the e-liquid can include extracts of such medications, cannabis, and any substances, such as those listed above.
[0237] In some embodiments, heating element 332 can include an inductor coil and vapor conduit 323 can includes at least one susceptor element 329 configured to be heated by inductor coil 332 when powered by power supply 326 as activated by control circuitry 328. Power supply 326 may be configured to provide a high frequency oscillating current to heating element 332. Oscillating current can be compatible to heat inductor coil 332.
[0238] Air and vapor conduit 323 can include a chamber 331 defined by at least one partition, such as partitions 333, each partition featuring at least one air passage opening 335, wherein sensor 342 is a pressure sensor disposed in chamber 331 and is operational for detecting suction or pressure drop created by an inhaling action of the user.

Inertial sensor may 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC be additionally or alternatively configured to initiate heating of heating element 32 to a standby starting point heating.
[0240] In some embodiments, control circuitry 328 may be further configured to transmit information regarding an operational status of article 300 and / or receive instructions for operating article 300 via a communication interface 339 with an external and / or mobile computing device (not shown).
[0241] In some embodiments, the information includes an indication of a level of the e-liquid in reservoir 330.
[0242] Reference is now made to Figures 11-12. Figure 11 is a chart illustrating a typical vape heating scheme of e-liquid as a function of time as practiced in prior art conventional vape devices. Figure 12 is a chart illustrating a heating scheme of e-liquid as a function of time of an embodiment constructed and operative in accordance with the present invention. Figure 13 is a chart illustrating alternative heating schemes of e- liquid as a function of embodiments constructed and operative in accordance with the present invention.
[0243] The power level for heating e-liquid in conventional vapes, is typically fixed, for example, 11 watts. That is, as soon as the vaper takes a puff, they immediately encounter the vapor inhaled at a high heat resulting from the maximum heating power of 1 1 watts (Figure 11). This process is not similar to the smoke flow of a cigarette smoker and temperature range experienced by a cigarette smoker. With reference to Figure 12, when 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC smoking a regular cigarette, at the initial stage of the puff, air and smoke is inhaled at a low temperature. As the inhaling process continues, the smoke temperature reaching the mouth and lungs of the smoker rises, as the air suction through the cigarette ignites the fire in the tobacco. In between successive puffs (inhalations), there is a break, and the tobacco through which the air ceases to pass under suction action of inhalation, cools down. The present invention imitates the conventional cigarette smoking experience by dynamically varying the vapor heating temperature by changing the heating power along the inhalation stages (inhalation normally extends around 2 seconds). To this end, microprocessor 343 can be configures to control the heating regime of heating element 332 along the curve of heating as is shown in Figure 12 (the curve of heating represents both the temperature and the power supplied which are correlated. The dynamic heating regime continues throughout the duration of an inhalation action, either as monitored by sensors or throughout a predefined period which is compatible with the duration of an inhalation action. In both cases, initiation of an inhalation process needs to be detected. Accordingly, sensor 342 is set to send a signal indicative of initiation of an inhalation process to control circuitry 328. If the termination of the inhalation action is monitored, sessor 342 also sends a signal indicative of termination of an inhalation process. In some embodiments, sensor 342 can be configured to send signals indicative of particular stages along an inhalation process (e.g., every tenth of a second - the suction power and its dynamical degree of 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC change (acceleration / deceleration) toward increase or decrease of suction action, which is indicative of a corresponding inhalation stage. For imitating conventional smoking experience, the dynamic heating regime of Figure 12 includes a low temperature starting point a, an initial phase b of gradual increase of heating, an intermediate phase c of moderate or high temperature heating, and a concluding phase d of gradual decrease of heating to a low temperature a.
[0244] User experience needs not to be confined to imitating the very experience of a cigarette smoker and as the vaping heating regime is controllable, microprocessor 343 and control circuitry 328 can be configured to administer other heating regimes. With reference to Figure 13, such regimes are exemplified. Accordingly, in some embodiments, the dynamic heating regime can includes any one of the following:
[0245] • curve 1 : is similar to the curve of Figure 12.
[0246] • curve 2: an initial phase a2 of moderate or high temperature heating and a concluding phase b2 of gradual decrease of heating.
[0247] • curve 3: a low temperature starting point a3, an initial phase b3 of gradual increase of heating to a high temperature c3 and a concluding phase d3 of gradual decrease of heating to a low temperature e3.
[0248] • curve 4: a high temperature starting point a4, an initial phase b4 of gradual decrease of heating to a moderate temperature, an intermediate phase c4 of moderate temperature heating, and a 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC concluding phase d4 of gradual decrease of heating to a low temperature e4.
[0249] • Curve 5: an initial phase a5 of a moderate temperature heating, a first intermediate phase b5 of gradual increase of heating to a high temperature, a second intermediate phase c5 of high temperature heating, and a concluding phase d5 of gradual decrease of heating to a moderate temperature e5.
[0250] An adequate user interface, such as exemplified below, can enable a user to choose a desirable heating regime and temperature range programs and to intermix any combination according to their choice.
[0251] Reference is now made to Figure 14, which is a schematic cross- sectional view of an e-cigarette aerosol generating article 400 operational for heating and evaporating e-liquid, constructed and operative in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention
[0252] Article 400 comprises a body 422 and a pod 424 (their separation is represented by perforated line 423), which terminates in a filter 126 or other mouthpiece, through which a user inhales a vaporized e-liquid. Body 422 comprises a battery 426 and control circuitry 428, which is shown in an inset and described below in greater detail. Pod 424 comprises a reservoir 430, containing the e-liquid, and a heating coil 432, which vaporizes the e- liquid when actuated by the user. Alternatively, pod 424 may contain other types of vaporizers, which may operate by any suitable mechanism of heating or otherwise aerosolizing the e-liquid in reservoir 430. 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC
[0253] Control circuitry 428 comprises a microprocessor 434 and / or other control logic, which is coupled to a communication interface 436 for communicating over the air with a mobile computing device 438, such as the user’s smartphone. Communication interface 436 typically comprises a Bluetooth® transceiver, but alternatively, the communication interface may operate in accordance with any suitable communication standard or protocol. Control circuitry 428 may also comprise user interface (III) elements 440 and one or more sensors 442, as described further hereinbelow.
[0254] An application running on mobile computing device 438 can be configured to identify the user, for example by face or fingerprint identification, password, or any other suitable method of secure identification. When the user attempts to actuate article 400, microprocessor transmits a query via communication interface 436 to the application running on mobile computing device 438, requesting authorization for actuation. Upon identifying the user and ascertaining that the user is authorized to operate article 400, the application issues an authorization signal, which is transmitted over the air to communication interface 436. Upon receiving this signal, microprocessor 434 enables actuation of the vaporizer in pod 424 in response to this signal. An unauthorized user, such as a minor, may attempt to inhale through filter 426 or otherwise actuate article 400, but control circuitry 428 will not permit electricity to flow from battery 426 to heating coil 432 in the absence of the 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC authorization signal from mobile computing device 438. For additional security, microprocessor 434 may enable actuation of the vaporizer for only a certain, limited period of time and / or a certain number of inhalations.
[0255] Control circuitry 428 may support one or more ways to actuate heating coil 432 (subject to authorization by mobile computing device 438), by means of III elements 440 and / or sensors 442, to be ready in a standby (heated or unheated) mode and to heat according to a selected heating regime. For example, sensors 442 may comprise a flow or pressure sensor, which senses the flow of air through article 400 when the user inhales. Microprocessor 434 will actuate heating coil 432 according to a heating regime, when authorized by mobile computing device 438, in response to an indication of the flow that is output by this sensor. Alternatively or additionally, sensors 442 may comprise an inertial sensor, such as an accelerometer, which senses motion of article 400. In this case, microprocessor 434 will initiate communication with mobile computing device 438 in response to a certain pattern or patterns of motion sensed by the inertial sensor and will then actuate heating coil 432 when authorized.
[0256] As yet another example, III elements 440 may comprise a pushbutton or other user control, which the user operates to actuate and / or control article 400. Ill elements 440 may also comprise indicator lights, a vibrator, and / or other display and output components to inform the user of the state of article 420. Additionally or alternatively, sensors 442 may comprise a fingerprint sensor, which identifies a fingerprint of the user who 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC is holding the article 400. Processing circuitry 428 will permit actuation when the fingerprint identified by the sensor matches the identity of the authorized user ascertained by mobile computing device 438 and will administer a heating regime when article 400 is used.
[0257] In some embodiments, control circuitry 428 transmits information via communication interface 436 to mobile computing device 138 regarding the operational status and heating regime of article 400. In this manner, mobile computing device 438 can track the user’s level and patterns of use of article 400 and provide feedback and guidance, as well as automatic adjustment to suit the individual user. Additionally or alternatively, the application running on mobile computing device 438 may include a user interface screen, which allows the user to conveniently set configuration and operational parameters of article 400 and its heating regimes.
[0258] Further additionally or alternatively, one or more of sensors 442 may measure a level of the e-fluid in reservoir 430, and control circuitry 428 may transmit an indication of this level to mobile computing device 438. In this case, the application running on mobile computing device 438 may alert the user when the level of e-fluid drops below a certain threshold. The application may even connect to an online purchase site to order replacement fluid and / or replacement pods when needed, as well as to indicate when battery 146 is running low.
[0259] The configuration of article 400 that is described above enables a further range of functionality in terms of user identification and user control 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC over e-cigarette operation and its heating regime. In the first category, to purchase article 400, the user may be required to present an ID card, to verify that the sale is made to an adult and not a minor. The salesclerk ensures that the application is appropriately installed on the user’s smartphone, and the user’s smartphone is then paired with article 400. Subsequently, there are several options to ensure that only the authorized user is able to operate article 400:
[0260] 1) The user shakes article 400. The accelerometer wakes up the phone's microprocessor, and then with fingerprint or image recognition (a process similar to paying with a credit card by phone), the phone will give article 400 permission to operate.
[0261] 2) The user touches the phone (opening with a fingerprint), which will automatically open the application, wake up article 400, and give it permission for actuation. Simultaneously, the application can check the user’s credit card, phone number, and / or other identification.
[0262] It is noted that in addition to substituting smoking by inhaling vapor of e-liquid containing tobacco extract, authorized use management is also applicable to consumption of further supervision-requiring substances, such as prescription drugs, narcotics, dosage sensitive health aids, medications, pharmaceutical compounds and other substances intended for the treatment of psychological, mood or mental conditions, or psychiatric or health condition, and therefore the e-liquid can include extracts of such medications, cannabis, and any substances, such as those listed above. 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC
[0263] To enhance user experience, use options may feature additional control alternatives. The user may select from several options or from the app's recommendation, based on the type of tobacco, or build their profile that suits them.
[0264] For example, when a vaper takes a puff, they wake up microprocessor 134, which implements the desired evaporation program selected by the user and activates it. Simultaneously, microprocessor 134 monitors and collects data on each puff, such as time stamp and duration (all options, not necessarily used simultaneously). Each puff can also be monitored and the data sent to the phone app with data such as: when the puff was taken: time of puffing, date, and duration of the puff.
[0265] The phone app can monitor and analyze the data, store it, and simultaneously send it to an external server via the internet. It is possible to monitor at what time the user started vaping, geographical location, how many puffs it took for the user to reach saturation, when they returned for a second round of vaping (monitoring the time in between vaping sessions).
[0266] Further interface and operating options (the terms ‘article’, ‘device’, ‘vape’ are used interchangeably herein below):
[0267] 1 . When vaping, the LED light turns on, and it turns off when vaping ceases. A charging LED light can be turned off when the device is fully charged. The charging LED light can flash 3 times when the dices is discharged. 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC
[0268] 2. a TYPE_C USB charging Protection Function can be applied.
[0269] 3. Overtime Protection: upon vaping for more than 10 seconds at one time, the output heating current is turned off. The LED light flashes 2 times, then it enters the standby state.
[0270] 4. Short-Circuit Protection: When the output heating current is short-circuited, the LED light flashes for 2 seconds, and the device stops working.
[0271] 5. Overcurrent Protection: When the output heating current is an overcurrent, the LED light flashes for 2 seconds, and the device stops working.
[0272] 6. Undervoltage Protection: When the battery voltage is low, the LED light flashes 10 times.
[0273] 7. Optionally, a speaker can be installed on the device.
[0274] 8. Optionally, a small vibrator for sensation can be installed on the device.
[0275] In pods containing 2 ml of liquid, it is estimated that 1 ml can produce about 200 puffs (equivalent to 20 cigarettes because 10 vaping puffs deemed equivalent to smoking 1 cigarette). That is, when the count in the phone app reaches 200 puffs, the following actions will occur: The app will beep and alert that the pod is finished and needs to be replaced with a new pod. The app will send a message to the vape to activate the internal vibrator to vibrate, to play a sound produced by the vape, and / or to 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC activate LED flashing to alert that the pod is finished. Simultaneously, the phone app will send a message to the server that the customer has finished a pod, and it will be immediately recorded on the customer's card on the server. After the user finishes, for example, 5 pods, the virtual store will charge the user's credit card, and a delivery person will bring a package of pods to their home. With this platform, it will be possible to stay in touch with the user (which is a novel selling point that current cigarette companies are forbidden from practicing nowadays) and sell them more items or advertise merchandize (which is currently prohibited on street signs, TV, and movie theatres).
[0276] Accordingly, some embodiments of the disclosed technique include a system for managing operation of vaping article, comprising:
[0277] (a) a vaping management module (i.e. , an application) installed in a mobile computing device (e.g., a mobile phone) to be operated by the user; and

[0283] The system may further comprise a server operational for communicating with the module for receiving, collecting and / or analysing article use information and for sending suggested article use instructions and supply of reservoirs and other items to be presented to the user by the module.
[0284] The instructions received or the transmitted information may comprise an indication of a level of the e-liquid in the reservoir.

[0286] The control circuitry may comprise an inertial sensor and be configured to initiate communication with the mobile computing device in response to sensing of motion of the article by the inertial sensor.
[0287] The user (and the platform operator) can receive behavioral graphs and data such as: when they smoke, at what part of the day, how much they smoke, is there a decrease or increase in the number of vape dosage how many pods they consume per week, their smoking profile, their pulse during smoking, how many puffs calm and satisfy them, and so on. 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC

[0321] Embodiments of the present invention address this problem by providing an electronic cigarette that can be operated only by an authorized user. In some embodiments, the electronic cigarette communicates over the air with a mobile computing device, such as a smartphone, which enables the electronic cigarette to operate only after identifying the authorized user. Alternatively or additionally, the electronic cigarette itself may include one or more sensors for facilitating identification of the user.
[0322] According to an aspect of the invention, an aerosol-generating article which addresses these problems is disclosed, The article comprises:

[0333] Reference is now made to Fig. 15, which is a schematic side view of an aerosol-generating article 20 configured as an electronic cigarette, in accordance with an embodiment of the invention. Article 20 comprises a body 22 and a pod 24, which terminates in a filter 26 or other mouthpiece, through which a user inhales a vaporized e-liquid. Body 22 comprises a battery 26 and control circuitry 28, which is shown in an inset and described below in greater detail. Pod 24 comprises a reservoir 30, containing the e- 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC liquid, and a heating coil 32, which vaporizes the e-liquid when actuated by the user. Alternatively, pod may contain other types of vaporizers, which may operate by any suitable mechanism of heating or otherwise aerosolizing the e-liquid in reservoir 30.
[0334] Control circuitry 28 comprises a microprocessor 34 and / or other control logic, which is coupled to a communication interface 36 for communicating over the air with a mobile computing device 38, such as the user’s smartphone. Communication interface 36 typically comprises a Bluetooth® transceiver, but alternatively, the communication interface may operate in accordance with any suitable communication standard or protocol. Control circuitry 28 may also comprise user interface (III) elements 40 and one or more sensors 42, as described further hereinbelow.
[0335] An application running on mobile computing device 38 identifies the user, for example by face or fingerprint identification, password, or any other suitable method of secure identification. When the user attempts to actuate article 20, microprocessor transmits a query via communication interface 36 to the application running on mobile computing device 38, requesting authorization for actuation. Upon identifying the user and ascertaining that the user is authorized to operate article 20, the application issues an authorization signal, which is transmitted over the air to communication interface 36. Upon receiving this signal, microprocessor 34 enables actuation of the vaporizer in pod 24 in response to this signal. An unauthorized user, such as a minor, may attempt to inhale through filter 26 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC or otherwise actuate article 20, but control circuitry 28 will not permit electricity to flow from battery 26 to heating coil 32 in the absence of the authorization signal from mobile computing device 38. For additional security, microprocessor 34 may enable actuation of the vaporizer for only a certain, limited period of time and / or a certain number of inhalations.
[0336] Control circuitry 28 may support one or more ways to actuate heating coil 32 (subject to authorization by mobile computing device 38), by means of III elements 40 and / or sensors 42. For example, sensors 42 may comprise a flow or pressure sensor, which senses the flow of air through article 20 when the user inhales. Microprocessor 34 will actuate heating coil 32, when authorized by mobile computing device 38, in response to an indication of the flow that is output by this sensor. Alternatively or additionally, sensors 42 may comprise an inertial sensor, such as an accelerometer, which senses motion of article 20. In this case, microprocessor 34 will initiate communication with mobile computing device 38 in response to a certain pattern or patterns of motion sensed by the inertial sensor and will then actuate heating coil 32 when authorized.
[0337] As yet another example, III elements 40 may comprise a pushbutton or other user control, which the user operates to actuate article 20. Ill elements 40 may also comprise indicator lights, a vibrator, and / or other display and output components to inform the user of the state of the article. Additionally or alternatively, sensors 42 may comprise a fingerprint sensor, which identifies a fingerprint of the user who is holding the article 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC
[0338] 20. Processing circuitry 28 will permit actuation when the fingerprint identified by the sensor matches the identity of the authorized user ascertained by mobile computing device 38.
[0339] In some embodiments, control circuitry 28 transmits information via communication interface 36 to mobile computing device 38 regarding the operational status of article 20. In this manner, mobile computing device 38 can track the user’s level and patterns of use of article 20 and provide feedback and guidance, as well as automatic adjustment to suit the individual user. Additionally or alternatively, the application running on mobile computing device 38 may include a user interface screen, which allows the user to conveniently set configuration and operational parameters of article 20.
[0340] Further additionally or alternatively, one or more of sensors 42 may measure a level of the e-fluid in reservoir 30, and control circuitry 28 may transmit an indication of this level to mobile computing device. In this case, the application running on mobile computing device 38 may alert the user when the level of e-fluid drops below a certain threshold. The application may even connect to an online purchase site to order replacement fluid and / or replacement pods when needed, as well as to indicate when battery 26 is running low.
[0341] The configuration of article 20 that is described above enables a further range of functionality in terms of user identification and user control over e-cigarette operation. In the first category, to purchase article 20, the 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC user may be required to present an ID card, to verify that the sale is made to an adult and not a minor. The salesclerk ensures that the application is appropriately installed on the user’s smartphone, and the user’s smartphone is then paired with article 20. Subsequently, there are several options to ensure that only the authorized user is able to operate the article:
[0342] 1) The user shakes the article. The accelerometer wakes up the phone's microprocessor, and then with fingerprint or image recognition (a process similar to paying with a credit card by phone), the phone will give the article permission to operate.
[0343] 2) The user touches the phone (opening with a fingerprint), which will automatically open the application, wake up the article, and give it permission for actuation. Simultaneously, the application can check the user’s credit card, phone number, and / or other identification.
[0344] It is noted that in addition to substituting smoking by inhaling vapor of e-liquid containing tobacco extract, authorized use management is also applicable to consumption of further supervision-requiring substances, such as prescription drugs, narcotics, dosage sensitive health aids, medications, pharmaceutical compounds and other substances intended for the treatment of psychological, mood or mental conditions, or psychiatric or health condition, and therefore the e-liquid can include extracts of such medications, cannabis, and any substances, such as those listed above.
[0345] Reference is now made to Figure 18, which is a block diagram of a method 700, of authorizing operation of an aerosol-generating article, 6000920004PCT SPC-01 DESC such as article 20 described above. Method 700 comprises the procedures of:

[0347] • receiving a signal from the mobile computing device indicating that a user is authorized to operate the article (step 704);
[0348] • enabling actuation of a vaporizer in response to the authorization signal using the control circuitry (step 706); and
[0349] • vaporizing e-liquid contained in a reservoir for inhaling by the user when the vaporizer is actuated by the authorized user (step 708).
[0350] In some embodiments, method 700 further comprises:
[0351] • sensing a flow of air through the vaporizer in response to inhalation ;
[0352] • indicating the flow to the the control circuitry; and
[0353] • actuating the vaporizer in response to the indication.
[0354] In some embodiments, the signal is issued by an application running on the mobile computing device in response to identification of the user by the application.
