Description

TUNER-ADJUSTED ANTENNA PATTERNBACKGROUND

[0001] Wireless communication devices are increasingly popular and increasingly complex. For example, mobile telecommunication devices have progressed from simple phones, to smart phones with multiple communication capabilities (e.g., multiple cellular communication protocols, Wi-Fi,  and other short-range communication protocols) , supercomputing processors, cameras, etc. Wireless communication devices have antennas to support various functionality such as communication over a range of frequencies, reception of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals, also called Satellite Positioning Signals (SPS signals) , etc.

[0002] With several antennas disposed in a single wireless communication device, available volume for antennas is at a premium. For example, smartphones may have numerous antennas (e.g., eight antennas, 10 antennas, or more) with very limited volume due to the size of devices that consumers desire. Consequently, antenna assemblies (e.g., modules) may be limited to very small volumes, e.g., with widths of 4mm or less.

[0003] Despite the volume restrictions for antennas, desired functionality of the antennas continues to increase. With the advent of 5th generation (5G) of wireless communication technology, mmW (millimeter-wave) phased array antennas have received extensive attention to address the propagation loss and aperture blockage hurdles by introducing higher antenna gain and beamforming features. Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems is one of the key enablers of 5G technology to increase the spectral efficiency and system capacity by effectively streaming the transmit / receive data with two orthogonally polarized signals (cross-polarized signals) in desired directions. The trend in consumer electronics is to develop RF assemblies (radio frequency assemblies) with small form factors which can be easily accommodated within the limited space of the emerging smart devices including cell phones and tablets.

[0004] The physical requirements of antennas make maintaining or improving performance (e.g., in terms of coverage, latency, bandwidth, radiation efficiency, and / or quality of service) difficult. For example, with limited space for antennas, adding one or more antennas for different angular coverage may be impractical.SUMMARY

[0005] An example mobile wireless signaling device includes: a body including a back panel and a front panel, the body including a plurality of edges; and an antenna system retained by the body and comprising: an antenna element; an energy coupler coupled to the antenna element; a printed circuit board coupled to the energy coupler; a ground conductor physically separate from the printed circuit board; a tuner coupled to the printed circuit board and the ground conductor and including a reactive component and a switch to selectively couple the printed circuit board to the ground conductor via the reactive component; and a controller communicatively coupled to the tuner to cause the tuner to selectively couple the printed circuit board to the ground conductor to implement at least one of a first mode and a second mode; where the antenna system has a first antenna pattern in the first mode and a second antenna pattern, different from the first antenna pattern, in the second mode.

[0006] An example method of antenna pattern selection for a mobile wireless signaling device includes selectively coupling a printed circuit board of the mobile wireless signaling device to a ground conductor of the mobile wireless signaling device to implement at least one of a first mode and a second mode, wherein the printed circuit board is coupled to an energy coupler that is coupled to an antenna element, wherein the printed circuit board is physically separate from the ground conductor, and wherein selectively coupling the printed circuit board to the ground conductor comprises selectively coupling the printed circuit board to the ground conductor via a tuner that includes a reactive component.

[0007] Another example mobile wireless signaling device includes: a body including a back panel and a front panel, the body including a plurality of edges; an antenna system retained by the body and comprising: an antenna element; an energy coupler coupled to the antenna element; a first ground conductor proximate the energy coupler and the antenna element; a second ground conductor physically separate from the first ground conductor; and means for selectively coupling the first ground conductor to the second ground conductor to implement at least one of a first mode and a second mode with the antenna system having a first antenna pattern in the first mode and a second antenna pattern, different from the first antenna pattern, in the second mode.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0023] FIG. 12 is a block flow diagram of a method of antenna pattern selection for a mobile wireless signaling device.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0024] Techniques are discussed herein for selecting an antenna pattern of a mobile wireless signaling device. For example, an antenna element may be coupled to a stand-alone printed circuit board (PCB) and the stand-alone PCB selectively coupled to a main ground to select an antenna pattern (and possibly resonant frequency) of the antenna element. The antenna pattern may be selected by selective coupling of ends of the stand-alone PCB to the main ground, e.g., shorting both ends of the stand-alone PCB to the main ground for one antenna pattern and, for another antenna pattern, coupling one end of the stand-alone PCB to the main ground through a reactive element (e.g., a capacitor) and isolating the other end of the stand-alone PCB from the main ground. The antenna pattern may be selected based on an orientation of the mobile wireless signaling device. These are example implementations, and other implementations may be used.

[0025] Items and / or techniques described herein may provide one or more of the following capabilities, as well as other capabilities not mentioned. Improved signal transfer between a mobile wireless signaling device and another device (e.g., a non-terrestrial network device such as a satellite) may be improved, e.g., for different orientations of the mobile wireless signaling device by implementing different antenna patterns based on different orientations of the mobile wireless signaling device. Wireless signaling coverage may be provided for multiple bandwidths using a single antenna element, conserving space in a device (e.g., a mobile device) by avoiding space used by multiple antenna elements to provide bandwidth coverage similar to that provided by a single antenna element as discussed herein. Other capabilities may be provided and not every implementation according to the disclosure must provide any, let alone all, of the capabilities discussed. Further, it may be possible for an effect noted above to be achieved by means other than that noted, and a noted item / technique may not necessarily yield the noted effect.

[0026] Referring to FIG. 1, a communication system 100 includes mobile devices 112, a network 114, a server 116, access points (APs) 118, 120, and a satellite 130. The communication system 100 is a wireless communication system in that components of  the communication system 100 can communicate with one another (at least sometimes) using wireless connections directly or indirectly, e.g., via the network 114 and / or one or more of the access points 118, 120 (and / or one or more other devices not shown, such as one or more base transceiver stations) . For indirect communications, the communications may be altered during transmission from one entity to another, e.g., to alter header information of data packets, to change format, etc. The mobile devices 112 shown are mobile wireless communication devices (although they may communicate wirelessly and via wired connections) including mobile phones (including smartphones) , a laptop computer, and a tablet computer. Still other mobile devices may be used, whether currently existing or developed in the future. Further, other wireless devices (whether mobile or not) may be implemented within the communication system 100 and may communicate with each other and / or with the mobile devices 112, network 114, server 116, and / or APs 118, 120. For example, such other devices may include internet of thing (IoT) devices, medical devices, home entertainment and / or automation devices, automotive devices, etc. The mobile devices 112 or other devices may be configured to communicate in different networks and / or for different purposes (e.g., 5G, Wi-Fi communication, multiple frequencies of Wi-Fi communication, satellite communication and / or positioning, one or more types of cellular communications (e.g., GSM (Global System for Mobiles) , CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) , LTE (Long-Term Evolution) , etc. ) ,  communication, etc. ) . The satellite 130 is one of multiple satellites making up one or more Satellite Positioning Systems (SPS) such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) . One or more of the mobile devices 112 include appropriate components (e.g., one or more antennas) for signal transfer with other devices in the system 100, e.g., one or more antennas for receiving signals from the satellite 130 and / or one or more antennas for transmitting signals to and / or receiving signals from other ones of the mobile devices 112 and / or one or more of the Aps 118, 120.

[0027] Referring to FIG. 2, a mobile device 200, which is an example of one of the mobile devices 112 shown in FIG. 1, includes a top cover 210, a display layer 220, a printed circuit board (PCB) layer 230, a metal middle frame layer 235, and a bottom cover 240. The mobile device 200 as shown may be a smartphone or a tablet computer but embodiments described herein are not limited to such devices (for example, in other implementations of concepts described herein, a device may be a router or customer  premises equipment (CPE) ) . The top cover 210 includes a screen 214. The bottom cover 240 has a bottom surface 244. Sides 212, 242 of the top cover 210 and the bottom cover 240 provide an edge surface. The top cover 210 and the bottom cover 240 comprise a housing that retains the display layer 220, the PCB layer 230, and other components of the mobile device 200 that may or may not be on the PCB layer 230. For example, the housing may retain (e.g., hold, contain) or be integrated with antenna systems, front-end circuits, an intermediate-frequency circuit, and a processor discussed below. The housing may be substantially rectangular, having two sets of parallel edges in the illustrated embodiment, and may be configured to bend or fold. In this example, the housing has rounded corners, although the housing may be substantially rectangular with other shapes of corners, e.g., straight-angled (e.g., 45°) corners, 90°, other non-straight corners, etc. Further, the size and / or shape of the PCB layer 230 may not be commensurate with the size and / or shape of either of the top or bottom covers or otherwise with a perimeter of the device. For example, the PCB layer 230 may have a cutout to accept a battery. Further, the PCB layer 230 may include sandwiched boards and / or a PCB daughter board. Daughter boards may be chosen to facilitate a design and / or manufacturing process, e.g., to reinforce a functional separation or to better utilize a space in the housing. Embodiments of the PCB layer 230 other than those illustrated may be implemented. The PCB layer 230 and / or the metal middle frame layer 235 may provide a main ground for one or more circuits of the mobile device 200.

[0028] The limited space available in a UE (e.g., a smartphone, tablet computer, etc. ) presents antenna design challenges. For example, with 10 or more antennas for LTE, sub-6GHz band, and SPS (Satellite Positioning System) (e.g., GPS (Global Positioning System) in a mobile phone, there may be no additional space available for another antenna. Because antenna frequency bandwidth varies with antenna size, with small antennas typically having narrow bandwidths, designing a stand-alone antenna to cover a wide frequency bandwidth is challenging.

[0029] As used herein, the term "user equipment" and "UE" are not specific to or otherwise limited to any particular Radio Access Technology (RAT) , unless otherwise noted. In general, UEs may be any wireless communication device (e.g., a mobile phone, router, tablet computer, laptop computer, consumer asset tracking device, Internet of Things (IoT) device, etc. ) used by a user to communicate over a wireless communications network. A UE may be mobile or may (e.g., at certain times) be  stationary, and may communicate with a Radio Access Network (RAN) . As used herein, the term "UE" may be referred to interchangeably as an "access terminal" or "AT, " a "client device, " a "wireless device, " a "subscriber device, " a "subscriber terminal, " a "subscriber station, " a "user terminal" or UT, a "mobile terminal, " a "mobile station, " a "mobile device, " or variations thereof. Generally, UEs can communicate with a core network via a RAN, and through the core network the UEs can be connected with external networks such as the Internet and with other UEs. Of course, other mechanisms of connecting to the core network and / or the Internet are also possible for the UEs, such as over wired access networks,  networks (e.g., based on IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) 802.11, etc. ) and so on. Further, two or more UEs may communicate directly in some configurations with or without passing information to each other through a network.

[0030] Referring also to FIG. 3, a mobile wireless signaling device 300 includes a body 310 and an antenna system 320 that includes RF circuitry 330 and a controller 350. The mobile wireless signaling device 300 is an example of the mobile device 200. Although one antenna system 320 is shown in FIG. 3, more than one antenna system (with one or more antenna system configurations) may be included in the mobile wireless signaling device 300. The antenna system 320 includes an antenna element 321, an energy coupler 322, a stand-alone PCB 323, a main ground 324, a tuner 325, and a connector 326. The stand-alone PCB 323 provides an antenna ground and the main ground 324 may be provided by conductor of a PCB and / or a metal layer (e.g., of the PCB layer 230 and / or of the metal middle frame layer 235) . The antenna system 320 is configured to provide multiple antenna modes each with a different antenna pattern for the antenna element 321 (for transmission and / or reception of wireless signals) . The different antenna patterns may be used with different orientations of the mobile wireless signaling device 300, with the different patterns having different directionalities (e.g., different directions of maximum gain and / or ranges of direction with gain above a threshold gain) . Even if referred to in the singular, the antenna element 321 may include one or more antenna elements, the energy coupler 322 may include one or more energy couplers, the tuner 325 may include one or more tuners, and the connector 326 may include one or more connectors.

[0031] The antenna element 321 may be configured for any of a variety of uses and be any of a variety of types of antenna elements. For example, the antenna system 320 and  the antenna element 321 may be configured for NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network) signaling. Antenna elements for NTN signaling typically have high maximum gain, e.g., greater than -3dBi with an efficiency greater than -7dBi. A single antenna pattern of the antenna element 321 may have gain below a threshold gain in some directions. Consequently, different antenna patterns may be used that in combination provide gain above a threshold gain in all (desired) directions.

[0032] The antenna element 321 may be any of a variety of types of antenna elements and may operate at (e.g., resonate at) any of a variety of frequencies. For example, the antenna element 321 may be a metal ring antenna, a monopole, an inverted-F antenna (IFA) , a planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) , etc. As another example, the antenna element 321 may operate at a variety of frequencies, with frequencies higher than 1.7 GHz possibly enabling the stand-alone PCB 323 to be desirably (based on application) short.

[0033] The antenna element 321 may be disposed at least proximate to at least one edge of multiple edges 311, 312, 313, 314 of the body 310. For example, the antenna element 321 may be disposed proximate to (near but separated from) the edge 311. For example, a separation distance between the antenna element 321 and the edge 311 may be within 3 mm, although the separation distance may be application dependent. As another example, the antenna element 321 could form a portion of one or more of the edges 311-314, or be disposed proximate to multiple edges (e.g., two edges) of the edges 311-314, or form a portion of one of the edges 311-314 and be disposed proximate to another one of the edges 311-314. Still other configurations may be used.

[0034] The energy coupler 322 is coupled to the antenna element 321 and the stand-alone PCB 323. While FIG. 3 shows a connection line between the antenna element 321 and the energy coupler 322, and between the energy coupler 322 and the stand-alone PCB 323, the energy coupler 322 may comprise (all the) components from the antenna element 321 to the stand-alone PCB 323. The energy coupler 322 may communicatively couple the antenna element 321 to signal circuitry (as further discussed with respect to FIG. 4A) on the stand-alone PCB 323 including transmission components configured to produce a signal for transmission by the antenna element 321 and / or reception components configured to process a signal received by the antenna element 321 and provided through the energy coupler 322 to the stand-alone PCB 323. Transmission components may include an oscillator, a power amplifier, a mixer, and a  processor to provide a signal to be mixed by the mixer with a signal from the oscillator. Reception components may include an LNA (Low-Noise Amplifier) , a mixer, an oscillator, and a processor (which may be shared with the controller 350) to decode the reception signal amplified by the LNA, and downconverted in frequency by the mixer and the oscillator. The signal circuitry may comprise transmission components for one or more frequency bands and / or reception components for one or more frequency bands.

[0035] The stand-alone PCB 323 may be selectively coupled by the tuner 325 and / or the connector 326 to the main ground 324. For example, the tuner 325 may (in response to instruction from the controller 350) couple the stand-alone PCB 323 (e.g., a first end of a ground conductor of the stand-alone PCB 323) via an electrical short to the main ground 324 (e.g., a ground conductor of the PCB layer 230 and / or the metal middle frame layer 235) . The tuner 325 may be disposed further from the energy coupler 322 than the connector 326. The connector 326 may provide a short from the stand-alone PCB 323 to the main ground 324, or isolate the stand-alone PCB 323 from the main ground 324, and the tuner 325 may short the stand-alone PCB 323 to the main ground 324 or couple the stand-alone PCB 323 to the main ground 324 via a reactive component. As another example, the tuner 325 may (in response to instruction from the controller 350) couple the stand-alone PCB 323 via a reactive component (e.g., one or more capacitances) to the main ground 324. As another example, the connector 326 may (in response to instruction from the controller 350) couple the stand-alone PCB 323 (e.g., a second end of the ground conductor of the stand-alone PCB 323, opposite the first end of the ground conductor of the stand-alone PCB 323) via an electrical short to the main ground 324. While FIG. 3 shows a connection line between the tuner 325 and the stand-alone PCB 323 and between the tuner 325 and the main ground 324, the tuner 325 may comprise (all the) components from the stand-alone PCB 323 to the main ground 324, e.g., including one or more clips or springs to help ensure electrical connection between the tuner 325 and the PCBs 323, 324. In other examples, the tuner 325 is implemented on the PCB layer 230. Similarly, while FIG. 3 shows a connection line between the connector 326 and the stand-alone PCB 323 and between the connector 326 and the main ground 324, the connector 326 may comprise (all the) components from the stand-alone PCB 323 to the main ground 324, e.g., including one or more clips or springs to help ensure electrical connection between the tuner 325 and the PCB 323 and between the tuner 325 and the main ground 324. In other examples, the connector  326 is implemented on the PCB layer 230. The element 323 need not be implemented as a PCB, but can be any element which provides a ground for the antenna. For example, any conductive or metal structure that allows for or is implemented in combination with an element providing connection to the energy coupler 322, may be used for the element 323 and may not include all layers, materials, etc. typically included in a PCB. Examples referring to a stand-alone PCB are included below, but those of skill in the art will appreciate that other implementations may be used.

[0036] The controller 350 may include a processor 352 (that may include one or more hardware devices, e.g., a central processing unit (CPU) , a microcontroller, an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) , etc. ) and a memory 354. The processor 352 may comprise multiple processors including a general-purpose / application processor, a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) , a modem processor, a video processor, and / or a sensor processor. The memory 354 may be a non-transitory, processor-readable storage medium that may include random access memory (RAM) , flash memory, disc memory, and / or read-only memory (ROM) , etc. The memory 354 may store software 356 which may be processor-readable, processor-executable software code containing instructions that may be configured to, when executed, cause the processor 352 to perform various functions described herein. Alternatively, the software 356 may not be directly executable by the processor 352 but may be configured to cause the processor 352, e.g., when compiled and executed, to perform the functions. Even if referred to in the singular, the processor 352 may include one or more processors, and / or the memory 354 may include one or more memories. The description herein may refer to the controller 350 performing a function, but this includes other implementations such as where the processor 352 executes instructions of software and / or firmware. The description herein may refer to the mobile wireless signaling device 300 performing a function as shorthand for one or more appropriate components of the mobile wireless signaling device 300 performing the function. The processor 352 may include a memory with stored instructions in addition to and / or instead of the memory 354. The controller 350 is communicatively coupled to the tuner 325 and the connector 326 (which may be called a selective connector) and is configured to cause the tuner 325 and the connector 326 to selectively communicatively couple the stand-alone PCB 323 to the main ground 324, or to isolate the stand-alone  PCB 323 from the main ground 324. Functionality of the controller 350 is discussed more fully below.

[0037] The mobile wireless signaling device 300 may include an orientation sensor 360 that is communicatively coupled to the controller 350. The orientation sensor 360 may be configured to measure one or more parameters (e.g., magnetic field) and determine an orientation of the device 300 based on the measurement (s) and / or to provide the measurement (s) to the controller 350 for determination of the orientation of the device 300. The controller 350 may be configured to select a mode of operation (e.g., tuning mode and corresponding antenna pattern mode) of the device 300 based on the orientation of the device 300.

[0038] Referring also to FIG. 4A and FIG. 4B, an antenna system portion 400 is an example of a respective portion of the antenna system 320 shown in FIG. 3. The antenna system portion 400 includes an antenna element 421, an energy coupler 422, a stand-alone PCB 423, a main ground 424, a tuner 425, and a connector 426. In this example, the energy coupler 422 comprises a spring extending from the stand-alone PCB 423 to the antenna element 421. The antenna system portion 400 may include some components on the PCB 423 and / or off the PCB 423 configured to produce and transmit and / or to receive and process (e.g., decode) signals to be transmitted from the antenna element 421 and / or received by the antenna element 421, respectively. In other examples, including some examples in which the element 323 is not configured as a complete PCB, the tuner 325 and the SC circuitry 480 are implemented on the PCB layer 230.

[0039] The stand-alone PCB 423 and the main ground 424 are physically separate, e.g., separated by a separation distance 460 (e.g., less than 5mm, e.g., less than 2mm, e.g., about 1mm) . In this example, the stand-alone PCB 423 overlaps with a portion of the main ground 424, with an area 430 of the stand-alone PCB 423 defined by a length 431 and a width 432 of the stand-alone PCB 423 overlapping with an area 440 of the main ground 424 defined by a length 441 and a width 442 of the main ground 424. In this example, the stand-alone PCB 423 fully overlaps with the main ground 424 (with the area 430 completely overlapped by the area 440) . In other examples, a stand-alone PCB may partially (but not fully) overlap with a main ground. In other examples, a stand-alone PCB may not overlap with a main ground. For example, referring also to FIG. 5, an antenna system portion 500 (that is an example of a respective portion of the antenna  system 320 shown in FIG. 3) includes an antenna element 521, an energy coupler 522, a stand-alone PCB 523, a main ground 524, a tuner 525, and a connector 526. The stand-alone PCB 523 is laterally displaced on all sides of the stand-alone PCB 523 from a main ground 524 by a cutout 580 in the main ground 524. The stand-alone PCB 523 may be laterally displaced by a similar distance on each side from the main ground 524 or the displacement of one or more sides may be different from that of one or more other sides. The stand-alone PCB 523 may be vertically displaced from the main ground 524, e.g., a plane of the stand-alone PCB 523 may be displaced from a plane of the main ground 524 similar to the stand-alone PCB 423 and the main ground 424 shown in FIGS. 4A and 4B (being separated by the separation distance 460) . Referring again in particular to FIG. 4A and FIG. 4B, the length 431 of the stand-alone PCB 423 is approximately one-quarter of a free-space wavelength of a resonant frequency of the antennal element 421 (e.g., between 0.2λ0 and 0.3λ0) . The width 432 of the stand-alone PCB 423 is approximately the same as a width 450 of the antenna element 421 (see FIG. 4B) , e.g., between 7mm and 10mm. Also, in other configurations, the area of a stand-alone PCB and / or the area of a main ground may not be rectangular.

[0040] Referring again to FIG. 4A and FIG. 4B, with further reference to FIG. 3, the tuner 425 and the connector 426 are disposed at or proximate to opposite ends of the stand-alone PCB 423. Here, the tuner 425 is disposed at or proximate to an end 471 of the stand-alone PCB 423 and the connector 426 is disposed at or proximate to an end 472 of the stand-alone PCB 423, with the ends 471, 472 being opposite ends of the length 431 of the stand-alone PCB 423. For example, the tuner 425 may be connected to the stand-alone PCB within 5mm of the end 471 (e.g., a closest point of a first connection location 475 (e.g., an area of solder) of the tuner 425 to the end 471 is within 5mm of the end 471) and the connector 426 may be connected to the stand-alone PCB 423 within 5mm of the end 472. The connector 426 is connected to the stand-alone PCB 423 at a second connection location 476 (e.g., an area of solder) .

[0041] Referring also to FIG. 6, an antenna system portion 600 is an example of a respective portion of the antenna system 320 shown in FIG. 3. The antenna system portion 600 includes an antenna element 621, an energy coupler 622, a stand-alone PCB 623, a main ground 624, a tuner 625, and a selective connector 626. The tuner 625 may comprise one or more reactive components 630 (e.g., one or more capacitors) that may be coupled between the stand-alone PCB 623 and the main ground 624 to affect an  antenna pattern of the antenna element 321. The selective connector 626 may comprise one or more reactive components 640 (e.g., one or more capacitors) that may be coupled between the stand-alone PCB 623 and the main ground 624 to affect the antenna pattern of the antenna element 321.

[0042] Referring also to FIG. 7A and FIG. 7B, an antenna system portion 700, that is an example of a respective portion of the antenna system 320 shown in FIG. 3, includes a tuner 725 (which is an example implementation of the tuner 625) and a connector 726 (which is an example implementation of the selective connector 626) . In this example, the tuner 725 includes a switch 710 that is configured to selectively connect, in response to instruction from a controller 750 (which is an example of the controller 350 shown in FIG. 3) , the stand-alone PCB 623 to the main ground 624 either via an electrical short 712 (as shown in FIG. 7A) or through a reactive component (here, a capacitor 714 (as shown in FIG. 7B) , although a different reactive component (e.g., an inductor) may be used (e.g., selected) depending desired frequency of operation) . Also in this example, the connector 726 includes a switch 720 that is configured to selectively connect, in response to instruction from the controller 750, the stand-alone PCB 623 to the main ground 624 either through an electrical short 722 (as shown in FIG. 7A) or to isolate the stand-alone PCB 623 from the main ground 624 (by being open as shown in FIG. 7B) . Other configurations may be used, e.g., with the connector 726 including one or more reactive components that may be coupled between the stand-alone PCB 623 and the main ground 624 to select a desired frequency of operation and / or a desired antenna pattern. FIG. 7A shows a first operational mode in which the switches 710, 720 couple the stand-alone PCB 623 to the main ground 624. FIG. 7B shows a first operational mode in which the switch 710 couples the stand-alone PCB 623 to the main ground 624 via the capacitor 714 and the switch 720 is open to ground thereby isolating the stand-alone PCB 623 from the main ground 624.

[0043] Referring also to FIG. 8, a capacitor 800 is a variable capacitor and is an example of the capacitor 714 shown in FIG. 7. The capacitor 800 is a variable-reactance component that is configured to provide different capacitance values. The capacitor 800 includes capacitance selection switches 811, 812, 813, 814, 815 and corresponding capacitors 821, 822, 823, 824, 825. In this example, the capacitor 800 is configured to provide any of five non-zero capacitance values or a combination of two or more thereof (with one or more of the switches 821-825 closed) . For example, the  capacitors 821-825 may have capacitance values in a range between 0.7pF and 9pF, although this range is an example and other ranges of capacitance values may be used. One or more of the capacitors 821, 822, 823, 824, 825 may comprise multiple capacitors. As shown, each of the switches 811-815 is coupled in series with a respective one of the capacitors 821-825, with the series switch / capacitor combinations being coupled in parallel with each other. The controller 350 (see FIG. 3) may control the switches 811-815 to select a desired reactance value for the capacitor 800. The capacitor 800 is an example, and other configurations of variable-reactance components may be used (e.g., with another quantity of discrete selectable capacitors) .

[0044] The selection by the tuner 725 of the capacitor 714, and the value of the capacitor 714 as appropriate, selects a corresponding operation mode of the mobile wireless signaling device 300 by selectively tuning the frequency of the antenna system 320. The tuning of the frequency of the antenna system 320 also tunes (selects) the antenna pattern of the antenna element 321.

[0045] Referring to FIG. 9A and FIG. 9B, with further reference to FIG. 3, FIG. 4, and FIG. 7, the controller 350 may select an operation mode of the device 300 with a corresponding antenna pattern of the antenna element 321, here the antenna element 421. For example, the controller 350 may selectively cause the tuner 725 to electrically couple the PCBs 623, 624 via the electrical short 712 and cause the connector 726 to electrically couple the PCBs 623, 624 via the electrical short 722 to implement a first operational mode with an antenna pattern 910 shown in FIG. 9A that is directed primarily toward (having higher gain in directions of) the edges 311-313. The edges 311-313 are two edges transverse to the length of the antenna element 321 and one edge in a direction of the length of the antenna element 321. The controller 350 may selectively cause the tuner 725 to electrically couple the PCBs 623, 624 via the capacitor 714 (and may select a value of the capacitor 714, e.g., 1pF) and cause the connector 726 to electrically isolate the PCBs 623, 624 (by causing the switch 720 to be open) to implement a second operational mode with an antenna pattern 920 shown in FIG. 9B that is directed more evenly toward the edges 311-314 (and in particular more toward the edge 314) than the antenna pattern 910. The antenna patterns 910, 920 are examples and other antenna patterns are possible. The controller 350 may be configured to select and implement an operational mode of the device 300 based on one or more factors such as an orientation of the device 300. For example, with the edge  312 being a top edge of the device 300, the controller 350 may select the first operational mode shown in FIGS. 7A and 9A based on the device 300 being oriented substantially vertically (with the edge 312 disposed further from the surface of the Earth than the edge 314 and the edges 311, 313 being within a threshold angle (e.g., 60° -120°) relative to the surface of the Earth) . As another example, the controller 350 may select the second operational mode shown in FIGS. 7B and 9B based on the device 300 being oriented other than substantially vertically.

[0080] Clause 16. The method of clause 15, wherein selectively coupling the printed circuit board to the ground conductor comprises coupling the printed circuit board to the ground conductor via the tuner and a selective connector in a first configuration in the first mode and coupling the printed circuit board to the ground conductor via at least the tuner in a second configuration in the second mode, the first configuration being different from the second configuration.

[0081] Clause 17. The method of any of clauses 12-16, further comprising:

[0084] Clause 18. The method of clause 15, wherein the first location is disposed proximate to a first edge of the printed circuit board and the second location is disposed proximate to a second edge of the printed circuit board opposite the first edge of the printed circuit board.

[0085] Clause 19. The method of clause 18, wherein the first location is disposed within 5mm of the first edge of the printed circuit board and the second location is disposed within 5mm of the second edge of the printed circuit board.

[0094] Other Considerations

[0095] Other examples and implementations are within the scope of the disclosure and appended claims. For example, features implementing functions may also be physically located at various positions, including being distributed such that portions of functions are implemented at different physical locations.

[0096] As used herein, the singular forms “a, ” “an, ” and “the” include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. Thus, reference to a device in the singular (e.g., “adevice, ” “the device” ) , including in the claims, includes one or more of such devices. The phrases “at least one” and “one or more” are used interchangeably and such that “at least one” referred-to object and “one or more” referred-to objects include implementations that have one referred-to object and implementations that have multiple referred-to objects. For example, “at least one device” and “one or more devices” each includes implementations that have one device and implementations that have multiple devices.

[0097] The terms “comprises, ” “comprising, ” “includes, ” and / or “including, ” as used herein, specify the presence of stated features, integers, steps, operations, elements,  and / or components, but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, integers, steps, operations, elements, components, and / or groups thereof.

[0098] Also, as used herein, “or” as used in a list of items (possibly prefaced by “at least one of” or prefaced by “one or more of” ) indicates a disjunctive list such that, for example, a list of “at least one of A, B, or C, ” or a list of “one or more of A, B, or C” or a list of “A or B or C” means A, or B, or C, or AB (A and B) , or AC (A and C) , or BC (B and C) , or ABC (i.e., A and B and C) , or combinations with more than one feature (e.g., AA, AAB, ABBC, etc. ) . Thus, a recitation that an item, e.g., a processor, is configured to perform a function regarding at least one of A or B, or a recitation that an item is configured to perform a function A or a function B, means that the item may be configured to perform the function regarding A, or may be configured to perform the function regarding B, or may be configured to perform the function regarding A and B. For example, a phrase of “a processor configured to measure at least one of A or B” or “a processor configured to measure A or measure B” means that the processor may be configured to measure A (and may or may not be configured to measure B) , or may be configured to measure B (and may or may not be configured to measure A) , or may be configured to measure A and measure B (and may be configured to select which, or both, of A and B to measure) . Similarly, a recitation of a means for measuring at least one of A or B includes means for measuring A (which may or may not be able to measure B) , or means for measuring B (and may or may not be configured to measure A), or means for measuring A and B (which may be able to select which, or both, of A and B to measure) . As another example, a recitation that an item, e.g., a processor, is configured to at least one of perform function X or perform function Y means that the item may be configured to perform the function X, or may be configured to perform the function Y, or may be configured to perform the function X and to perform the function Y. For example, a phrase of “a processor configured to at least one of measure X or measure Y” means that the processor may be configured to measure X (and may or may not be configured to measure Y) , or may be configured to measure Y (and may or may not be configured to measure X) , or may be configured to measure X and to measure Y (and may be configured to select which, or both, of X and Y to measure) .

[0099] As used herein, unless otherwise stated, a statement that a function or operation is “based on” an item or condition means that the function or operation is based on the  stated item or condition and may be based on one or more items and / or conditions in addition to the stated item or condition.

[0100] Substantial variations may be made in accordance with specific requirements. For example, customized hardware might also be used, and / or particular elements might be implemented in hardware, software (including portable software, such as applets, etc. ) executed by a processor, or both. Further, connection to other computing devices such as network input / output devices may be employed. Components, functional or otherwise, shown in the figures and / or discussed herein as being connected or communicating with each other are communicatively coupled unless otherwise noted. That is, they may be directly or indirectly connected to enable communication between them.

[0101] The systems and devices discussed above are examples. Various configurations may omit, substitute, or add various procedures or components as appropriate. For instance, features described with respect to certain configurations may be combined in various other configurations. Different aspects and elements of the configurations may be combined in a similar manner. Also, technology evolves and, thus, many of the elements are examples and do not limit the scope of the disclosure or claims.

[0102] A wireless communication system is one in which communications are conveyed wirelessly, i.e., by electromagnetic and / or acoustic waves propagating through atmospheric space rather than through a wire or other physical connection, between wireless communication devices (also called wireless communications devices) . A wireless communication system (also called a wireless communications system, a wireless communication network, or a wireless communications network) may not have all communications transmitted wirelessly, but is configured to have at least some communications transmitted wirelessly. Further, the term “wireless communication device, ” or similar term, does not require that the functionality of the device is exclusively, or even primarily, for communication, or that communication using the wireless communication device is exclusively, or even primarily, wireless, or that the device be a mobile device, but indicates that the device includes wireless communication capability (one-way or two-way) , e.g., includes at least one radio (each radio being part of a transmitter, receiver, or transceiver) for wireless communication.

[0103] Specific details are given in the description herein to provide a thorough understanding of example configurations (including implementations) . However,  configurations may be practiced without these specific details. For example, well-known circuits, processes, algorithms, structures, and techniques have been shown without unnecessary detail in order to avoid obscuring the configurations. The description herein provides example configurations, and does not limit the scope, applicability, or configurations of the claims. Rather, the preceding description of the configurations provides a description for implementing described techniques. Various changes may be made in the function and arrangement of elements.

[0104] Having described several example configurations, various modifications, alternative constructions, and equivalents may be used. For example, the above elements may be components of a larger system, wherein other rules may take precedence over or otherwise modify the application of the disclosure. Also, a number of operations may be undertaken before, during, or after the above elements are considered. Accordingly, the above description does not bound the scope of the claims.

[0105] Unless otherwise indicated, “about” and / or “approximately” as used herein when referring to a measurable value such as an amount, a temporal duration, and the like, encompasses variations of ±20%or ±10%, ±5%, or ±0.1%from the specified value, as appropriate in the context of the systems, devices, circuits, methods, and other implementations described herein. Unless otherwise indicated, “substantially” as used herein when referring to a measurable value such as an amount, a temporal duration, a physical attribute (such as frequency) , and the like, also encompasses variations of ±20%or ±10%, ±5%, or ±0.1%from the specified value, as appropriate in the context of the systems, devices, circuits, methods, and other implementations described herein.

[0106] A statement that a value exceeds (or is more than or above) a first threshold value is equivalent to a statement that the value meets or exceeds a second threshold value that is slightly greater than the first threshold value, e.g., the second threshold value being one value higher than the first threshold value in the resolution of a computing system. A statement that a value is less than (or is within or below) a first threshold value is equivalent to a statement that the value is less than or equal to a second threshold value that is slightly lower than the first threshold value, e.g., the second threshold value being one value lower than the first threshold value in the resolution of a computing system.
