[0004] Sleeve and Method for Permanently Fixing a Threaded Elongated Member in a Borehole

[0005] Technical Field of the invention

[0006] The present invention is related to glued-in rods in boreholes. More precisely, the present invention relates to a method for permanently fixing a threaded elongated member in a borehole, a sleeve for permanently fixing a threaded elongated member in a borehole, a kit of parts comprising said sleeve and a threaded elongated member, and the use of said sleeve for permanently fixing a threaded elongated member into a borehole. Most preferably, the present invention relates to permanently fixing the threaded elongated member in a borehole in an article made from timber.

[0007] Background of the Invention

[0008] Glued-in rods are a widely used connection or reinforcement method in construction. The system of glued-in rods consists of a threaded rod that is bonded into a borehole to provide high stiffness, high load performance and aesthetic benefits. Thereby, the borehole can be in articles made from concrete or timber.

[0009] One problem occurring with glued-in rods is that transverse forces are caused by the thread of the rod when the anchor rod is subjected to tensile load. These transverse forces are believed to cause splitting failure of the base material in which the hole was drilled. This in particular becomes important if the base material has a preferred strength direction such as in reinforced concrete or in timber due to fiber direction. Figures 1 and 2 schematically depict directions of the forces described.

[0010] This splitting failure is the reason why most glued-in rods are used with the edge and space distances that are prescribed in ‘EOTA Technical Report - Design for Glued-in Rods for Timber Connections (TR070)’. Hence, the edge distance for glued-in rods parallel to the grain is a2,c = 2,5 d and the distance between two rods a2 = 5 d. It has been shown that the distances specified in TR070 can prevent the splitting failure. Nevertheless, such minimum distance constitutes a limitation in construction and reinforcement methods. Thus, it has been a desire to find alternative solutions.

[0011] As a solution, the prior art described systems, in which the thread of the rod in the upper embedment area has been removed, cf. Figure 3. By the removal of the thread close to the opening of the borehole, transverse forces are avoided. This decreases the tendency of splitting failure and, thus, the edge and rod distances can be reduced. I could be shown that the edge distance can be a2,c =1.9 d and the rod distance a2 is reduced to 3.8 d.

[0012] Summary of the Invention

[0013] However, this solution has the severe disadvantage that removing the thread in the upper embedment area reduces the flexibility in choosing the depth of embedment. For this solution to work, the rods have to be prepared in manufacturing wherein only rods of defined length can be offered to the customer. In such a scenario, the customer would also be dependent on the special manufacturer, which might lead to longer lead-times. In another scenario, the thread of the rods had to be removed on the construction site by the worker before glueing in the rod. This, however, requires special equipment, special knowledge, time, and money. A further general disadvantage of this solution of the prior art is that the removal of the thread is an additional working step in manufacturing that also causes metal waste.

[0014] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a solution for a glued-in threaded rod in a borehole, preferably a borehole in concrete or timber, wherein splitting failure is reduced and wherein no further modification of the threaded rod is necessary.

[0015] It has now surprisingly been found that above-mentioned object can be achieved by a sleeve for fixing a threaded elongated member in a borehole in an article comprising a base material, wherein the sleeve comprises a sleeve body, wherein the sleeve body has an axis, a wall, an outer surface of the wall, a hollow body portion having an inner surface, and two receiving openings for receiving the threaded elongated member.

[0016] Furthermore, it has surprisingly been found that above-mentioned object can also be achieved by a kit of parts for permanently fixing a threaded elongated member in a borehole in an article comprising a base material, the kit of parts comprising a sleeve according to the present invention, the threaded elongated member, and a multi-component resin system.

[0017] Moreover, it has surprisingly been found that above-mentioned object is also achieved by a method for permanently fixing a threaded elongated member in a borehole in an article comprising a base material, the method comprising the steps of drilling in a drilling step a borehole into the article comprising a base material, positioning in a sleeve positioning step a sleeve according to the present invention in the borehole, inserting in an inserting step the threaded elongated member into the sleeve, filling in a filling step the borehole with a multi-component resin system, curing in a curing step the multi-component resin system in the borehole.

[0018] Further surprisingly, the above-mentioned object can also be achieved by the use of a sleeve according to the invention or of a kit of parts according to the invention for permanently fixing a threaded elongated member in a borehole in an article comprising a base material by the sleeve and a multi-component resin system.

[0019] Without wishing to be bound by theory it is believed that with covering the thread in the part close to the borehole opening, transverse forces are eliminated in this area. Thus, splitting failure is reduced.

[0020] It is a particular advantage of the present invention that the sleeve can be placed anywhere on the threaded rod, thereby providing full flexibility in choosing the embedment depth of the glued-in rods system. It is another advantage of the present invention that the sleeve allows the use of conventionally shaped rods, and no customization of the rod is needed. Furthermore, the sleeve advantageously centers the rod in the borehole and allows higher precision of the connection. Finally, the sleeves impedes that the rod is pushed out of the borehole due to the pressure of the mortar that is filled into the borehole.

[0059] Detailed Description of the Invention

[0060] As described above, the present invention relates to a sleeve, a kit of parts, a method, and a use. Each of these embodiments will be described in detail in the following. Sleeve according to the Invention

[0061] In the most general embodiment, the present invention relates to a sleeve (1) for fixing a threaded elongated member (2) in a borehole (3) in an article comprising a base material (4), wherein the sleeve (1) comprises a sleeve body (5), wherein the sleeve body (5) has an axis (6), a wall (7), an outer surface (8) of the wall (7), a hollow body portion (9) having an inner surface (10), and two receiving openings (11) for receiving the threaded elongated member (2).

[0062] Such a sleeve is depicted in Figures 4 to 7.

[0063] Preferably, the base material is selected from concrete or timber, preferably timber. If the base material is concrete, it is preferably reinforced concrete, most preferably steel- reinforced concrete. Preferably, in case the base material is timber, the timber is selected from softwood, more preferably Pine, Spruce, Fir (Douglas Fir), Cedar, and Larch, and hardwood, preferably Oak, Teak, Maple, Birch, and Beech.

[0064] Preferably, the outer surface (8) of the outer wall (7) is a substantially flat surface and / or the inner surface (10) of the hollow body portion (9) has a substantially flat surface. More preferably, the outer surface (8) of the outer wall (7) is not shaped as a thread and / or the inner surface (10) of the hollow body portion (9) is not shaped as a thread. If the outer surface (8) is substantially flat and / or is not shaped as a thread, it is believed that tensile forces produce less transverse force, thereby reducing splitting. A less direct effect is believed to be connected to the inner surface (10) of the hollow body portion (9) having a substantially flat surface or not being shaped as a thread: as this ensures that respective forces are also not transferred from the threaded elongated member (2) to the sleeve (1), they could also not be further transferred from the sleeve (1) to the article (4).

[0065] While several materials for the sleeve (1) are conceivable, such as metal, preferably, the sleeve (1) comprises, more preferably consists of, a plastic material, more preferably a polymer composition. Polymers as typically used for dowels could be used in the sleeve (1) of the present invention. Most preferably, the polymer composition of the sleeve (1) preferably comprises a polyolefin, such as a polypropylene homo- or copolymer.

[0066] It is preferred that the sleeve (1) fits the threaded elongated member (2) in that the threaded elongated member (2) can be inserted into the sleeve (1). Hence, preferably, the hollow body portion (9) of the body (5) of the sleeve (1) has an average diameter, wherein the average diameter is larger than the average diameter of the threaded elongate member (2). Preferably, the average diameter is about 10% larger than the average diameter of the threaded elongate member (2), more preferably about 5%, and most preferably about 2%.

[0067] It is also preferred that the threaded elongated member (2) has a tight seat in the sleeve (1) according to the present invention. Hence, preferably, the hollow body portion (9) of the body (5) of the sleeve (1) has an average diameter, one of the two receiving openings (11) is an outer receiving opening (11a), and the other of the two receiving openings (11) is an inner receiving opening (11 b), wherein the average diameter of the hollow body portion (9) decreases from the outer receiving opening (11a) to the inner receiving opening (11 b). This ensures that the threaded elongated member (2) will be seated tightly in the sleeve (1). Preferably, the average diameter of the hollow body portion (9) at the inner receiving opening (11 b) is in the range of from 3 to 20% of the average diameter of the hollow body portion (9) of the outer opening, more preferably in the range of from 5 to 15%, and most preferably in the range of from 7 to 13%.

[0068] Also preferably, the threaded elongated member (2) is a threaded anchor or a threaded rod, more preferably a threaded rod comprising, preferably consisting of, a metal, and most preferably a threaded rod comprising, preferably consisting of, steel. Preferably, the surface of the threaded elongated member (2) is completely covered by a thread. Typically, a threaded rod has a substantially cylindrical shape. Hence, to achieve a good fit, preferably, the sleeve body (5) and / or the hollow body portion (9) have a substantially cylindrical shape, preferably a cylindrical shape.

[0069] In a preferred embodiment of the sleeve (1), one of the two receiving openings (11) is an outer receiving opening (11a), wherein the outer receiving opening (11a) comprises a collar (12) protruding from the wall (7) outwardly from the axis (6) around the outer receiving opening (11 a). The collar has the advantage that the sleeve is not pushed inside the borehole during carrying out the method according to the present invention. Rather, the collar (12) holds the sleeve (1) in a position close to or at the edge of the borehole. As in this area the splitting failure predominately occurs, ensuring that the sleeve (1) is positioned in this area improves the reduction of splitting failure and the reliability of the method. Most preferably, the collar (12) and the wall (7) are formed from one piece. This facilitates the production, reduces costs and optimizes the connection between the collar (12) and the wall (7). In an even more preferred embodiment of the sleeve (1) comprising a collar (12), the collar (12) protrudes from the axis (6) in an angle in the range of from 30 to 60° in relation to said axis (6), preferably in the range of from 40 to 50 , more preferably in the range of from 42 to 48° (cf. Figures 4-7). This further helps to reliably centering the sleeve (1) and therefore also the threaded elongated member (2) in the borehole (3). Furthermore, preferably, the collar (12) has a thickness in the range of from 80 to 100% of the thickness of the wall (7) of the sleeve (1), preferably in the range of from 90 to 98%, and most preferably in the range of 95 to 97%. This ensures that the collar (12) is stiff enough to withstand any pushing forces provided by the threaded elongated member (2) during carrying out the method according to the present invention.

[0070] In another preferred embodiment of the sleeve (1) according to the present invention, one of the two receiving openings (11) is an inner receiving opening (11 b), wherein the sleeve (1) comprises sealing means (13) on the outer surface (8) of the wall (7) on a half of the body (5) comprising the inner receiving opening (11 b). This ensures that adhesive does not enter the gap between the outer surface (8) of the sleeve (1) and the borehole (3). Without wishing to be bound by theory it is believed that adhesive within said gap can form a force connection between the sleeve and the borehole. Hence, the presence of a sealing means (13) prevents the formation of such force connection. If the force connection is not present, it is believed that less transverse forces can be transferred from the sleeve (1) to the borehole therefore ensuring and improving the effect of reducing the splitting failure.

[0071] Preferably, the sealing means (13) includes at least one projection (14) adjacent to the outer surface (8) of the wall (7) and around the axis (6) of the sleeve (1). More preferably, the at least one projection (14) encloses the sleeve body (5). Likewise, more preferably, the at least one projection (14) defines a plane, where in the plane is perpendicular to the axis (6) of the sleeve (1). This ensures that in the area of the projection the threaded elongated member (2) will put pressure on the sleeve (1) when being applied to a borehole. At the projection (14), the pressure will be highest ensuring a tight fit between the projection (14) and the borehole (3), thereby achieving the sealing functionality. Thereby, the projection (14) is in the range of from 10 to 20% of the thickness of the wall (7) of the sleeve (1), preferably in the range of from 12 to 17%.

[0072] More preferably, the sleeve (1) comprises at least two projections (14) adjacent to the outer surface (8) of the wall (7) and around the axis (6) of the sleeve (1), preferably enclosing the sleeve body (5), more preferably defining a plane, where in the plane is perpendicular to the axis (6) of the sleeve (1). This further improves the sealing of the gap between the outer surface (8) and the borehole (3).

[0073] In another preferred embodiment of the sleeve (1) according to the present invention, one of the two receiving openings (11) is an inner receiving opening (11 b), wherein the sleeve (1) comprises a slot (17) in the wall (7) extending from the inner receiving opening (11 b) towards the outer receiving opening (11a) (cf. Figures 4, 5, and 7). Preferably, the slot (17) extends in a direction parallel to the axis (6). More preferably, the slot (17) extends until the sealing means (13), but not further in the direction of the outer receiving opening (11 b). The sleeve (1) comprises preferably two or more slots

[0074] (17). Usually, the sleeve (1) comprises not more than six slots (17). Most preferably, the sleeve (1) comprises two slots (17). The slots (17) provide space for the remaining parts of the wall (7) to extend itself when the threaded elongated member (2) is inserted into the sleeve in the borehole (3). This further improves the seat, tightness, and centrality of the sleeve (1) in the borehole (3).

[0075] Preferably, the sleeve (1) having a slot (17) further comprises an inner protrusion (18) on the inner surface (9) between the slots (17) (cf. Figure 6). Thereby, the inner protrusion preferably is a mere thickening of the wall from the inner part thereof to the edge of the inner receiving opening (11b). Most preferably, the protrusion is a continuous increase of the thickness the wall (7) from the inner part thereof to the edge of the inner receiving opening (11 b). This embodiment has the advantage that upon insertion of the threaded elongated member (2), the inner protrusion (18) is pressed towards the borehole (3), thereby increasing the tightness of the seat of the sleeve (1) and thereby centrality of the threaded elongated member (2) in the borehole (3). The sleeve (1) comprises preferably two or more inner protrusions (18), more preferably three or more. Usually, the sleeve (1) comprises not more than six inner protrusions

[0076] (18). Most preferably, the sleeve (1) has the same number of inner protrusions (18) as slots (17).

[0077] It should be noted that preferably, the sleeve (1) comprises all of the aforementioned features, i.e. the collar (12), the sealing means (13), in particular the projection (14), the slot (17), and the protrusion (18).

[0078] In Figure 8, a particularly preferred embodiment of the sleeve (1) according to the present invention has been shown. In this Figure preferred values for the dimensions of the sleeve have been defined. The dimensions of the sleeve (1) depend on the dimensions of the used rod. Preferably, the sleeve (1) can have dimensions for rods having diameters ranging from M6 to M30. Preferably, the length of the sleeve (1) is in the range of 4 to 6 times the diameter of the rod, preferably is 5 times the diameter of the rod. Hence, in case of Figure 8 showing dimensions of a sleeve (1) for a rod having a M16 diameter, the length of the sleeve body (5) along the axis (6) is in the range of from 30 to 70 mm, preferably 40 to 60 mm, more preferably 45 to 55 mm. Furthermore, in case of Figure 8 showing dimensions of a sleeve (1) for a rod having a M16 diameter, the average diameter of the hollow body portion (9) is in the range of from 7 to 18 mm, preferably 10 to 15 mm, and more preferably 11 to 14 mm. Moreover, preferably, the thickness of the wall (7) of the sleeve (1) is in the range of from 1 .8 to 5.8 mm, preferably in the range of from 2.8 to 4.8 mm, and most preferably from 3.4 to 4.2 mm.

[0104] Suitable curable epoxy resins for use in resin component (A) of the multi-component resin system of the present invention are many commercially available compounds known to those skilled in the art, which contain on average more than one epoxide group, preferably two epoxide groups, per molecule. These epoxy resins can be both saturated and unsaturated and aliphatic, alicyclic, aromatic, or heterocyclic and can also contain hydroxyl groups. They may further contain such substituents that do not cause interfering side reactions under the mixing or reaction conditions, for example, alkyl or aryl substituents, ether groups and the like. Within the scope of the invention, trimeric and tetrameric epoxides are also suitable.

[0105] Preferably, the epoxy resins are glycidyl ethers derived from polyhydric alcohols, particularly polyhydric phenols such as bisphenols and novolaks, especially those having an average glycidyl group functionality of 1.5 or greater, especially 2 or greater, for example from 2 to 10.

[0106] The epoxy resins may have an epoxy equivalent weight (EEW) of from 120 to 2000 g / EQ, preferably from 140 to 400. Mixtures of several epoxy resins can also be used.

[0107] Examples of polyhydric phenols used to prepare epoxy resins include resorcinol, hydroquinone, 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane (bisphenol A), mixtures of isomers of dihydroxyphenylmethane (bisphenol F), tetrabromo bisphenol A, novolac types, 4,4'- dihydroxyphenylcyclohexane, and 4,4'-dihydroxy-3,3'-dimethyldiphenylpropane.

[0108] Epoxy-based monomers / resins useful in the present invention include, without limiting the scope of the invention, diglycidyl ethers of bisphenol A and F, and aliphatic and cycloaliphatic epoxides. Other examples include hexanediol diglycidyl ethers, trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ethers, bisphenol A epichlorohydrin resins, and / or bisphenol F epichlorohydrin resins, for example, having an average molecular weight of MW < 2000 g / mol. Liquid diglycidyl ethers based on bisphenol A and / or F with an EEW of 150 to 300 g / EQ are preferred.

[0109] The EEW (epoxide equivalent weight) values are usually indicated on the starting materials by the manufacturers, or they are determined or calculated according to known methods. They indicate the amount in g of resin containing 1 mole of epoxy groups: EEW = MW / functionality.

[0110] The proportion of epoxy resin in the epoxy resin component (A) is >0 to 70% by weight, preferably 10 to 65% by weight and particularly preferably 30 to 60% by weight, based on the total weight of the epoxy resin component (A).

[0111] According to the invention, reactive diluents, such as glycidyl ethers of aliphatic, alicyclic, or aromatic mono- or polyalcohols, which have a lower viscosity than epoxides containing aromatic groups, can be used as a further liquid component. Examples of reactive diluents are monoglycidyl ethers, e.g. o-cresyl glycidyl ethers, and glycidyl ethers with an epoxide functionality of at least 2, such as 1 ,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDGE), cyclohexanedimethanol diglycidyl ether and hexanediol diglycidyl ether, as well as tri- or higher glycidyl ethers, such as glycerol triglycidyl ether, pentaerythritol tetraglycidyl ether, trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether (TMPTGE) or trimethylol ethane triglycidyl ether (TMETGE), with trimethylol ethane triglycidyl ether being preferred. [0112] Overall, the reactive diluents are preferably present in an amount of >0 to 60% by weight, particularly 1 to 20% by weight, based on the total weight of the epoxy resin component (A).

[0113] The proportion of epoxy resin component (A) in the total weight of the multi-component resin system is preferably from 5 to 90% by weight, in particular from 20 to 80% by weight or from 30 to 70% by weight, such as from 40 to 70% by weight.

[0114] Suitable epoxy resins and reactive thinners can also be found in the standard work by Michael Dornbusch, Ulrich Christ, and Rob Rasing, "Epoxy Resins," Vincentz Network GmbH & Co KG (2015), ISBN 13: 9783866308770. These compounds are incorporated herein by reference.
