Device for adjusting the extension of the seat cushion of a seat
[0001] The present invention relates to a device for adjusting the extension of the seat cushion of a seat, namely by adjusting the longitudinal position of a front portion of the seat cushion.
[0002] More particularly, the present invention relates to a device that can be manually actuated for adjusting the extension of the seat cushion of a seat, namely by allowing the front portion of the seat cushion to be held in a plurality of different discrete longitudinal positions.
[0003] The invention can be preferably, yet not exclusively, applied to vehicle seats.
[0004] Vehicle seats provided with a seat cushion having an adjustable extension in the longitudinal direction (i.e. a direction parallel to the travelling direction of the vehicle) are known from the art.
[0005] More particularly, vehicle seats are known which include a seat cushion comprising a seat cushion body and a seat cushion front portion, the seat cushion body and the seat cushion front portion being separate components and the seat cushion front portion being movable in the longitudinal direction relative to the seat cushion body.

[0019] The main object of the present invention is to overcome the limitations set forth above by providing a device for adjusting the extension of the cushion of a vehicle seat which is highly reliable in preventing accidental and undesired movements of the seat cushion front portion relative to the seat cushion body.

Device (1) for adjusting the extension of a seat cushion (100) of a seat, said device (1) including a first plate (3), a second plate (5), mounted to said first plate so as to be slidable in the longitudinal direction relative to said first plate, and a locking arrangement (10) for selectively allowing or preventing sliding of said second plate relative to said plate, wherein said first plate (3) is provided with a pair of longitudinally arranged parallel racks (7a, 7b), spaced from each other and facing each other, wherein said locking arrangement (10) correspondingly comprises a pair of locking blocks (11a, 11b), arranged between said racks (7a, 7b) and provided with locking teeth (13a, 13b) facing a respective rack (7a, 7b), wherein said locking blocks (11a, 11b) are constrained to said second plate (5) in the longitudinal direction and are movable in the transverse direction, so that they can move between a locking position, in which they are far from each other and the locking teeth (13a,13b) of each locking block are inserted and firmly retained in corresponding seats (9a, 9b) of the respective rack (7a, 7b), and an unlocking position, in which they are closer to each other and the locking teeth (13a,13b) of each locking block are disengaged from said seats (9a, 9b) of the respective rack (7a, 7b), wherein said locking arrangement (10) comprises transverse elastic means (15) urging said locking blocks (11a, 11b) away from each other in the transverse direction and pushing said locking teeth (13a, 13b) of said locking blocks (11a, 11b) into said seats (9a, 9b) of the racks (7a, 7b), wherein the locking arrangement (10) further includes a driving element (17), on which a force can applied by a user for overcoming the resistance of said transverse elastic means (15) and switching said locking blocks (11a, 11b) from said locking position to said unlocking position, and a connecting element (19) for transferring the force applied to said driving element (17) to said locking blocks (11a, 11b), said connecting element being made as a connecting rod (19) connected at a proximal end (19a) thereof to said driving element (17), characterized in that the distal end (19b) of said connecting rod (19) is shaped as a fork having a pair of parallel prongs (21a, 21b) and the facing surfaces (23a, 23b) of said prongs (21a, 21b) are inclined, so that the distance between the said prongs is maximum at their ends and then progressively decreases, and wherein each locking block (11a, 11b) is provided with a mating inclined surface (25a, 25b) co-operating with the inclined surface (23a, 23b) of a respective prong (21a, 21b).Device (1) according to claim 1, wherein said driving element is made as a driving handle (17) pivotally connected to said second plate (5).Device (1) according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said connecting rod (19) is movable backwards and forwards in the longitudinal direction, and wherein said inclined surfaces (23a, 23b) of said prongs (21a, 21b) of the distal end of said connecting rod are slidable along said mating inclined surfaces (25a, 25b) of said locking blocks (11a, 11b) as said connecting rod (19) moves backwards and forwards in the longitudinal direction.Device (1) according to claim 1 or 2 or 3, wherein a spring (27) is provided for guaranteeing the contact between said inclined surfaces (23a, 23b) of said prongs (21a, 21b) and said mating inclined surfaces (25a, 25b) of said locking blocks (11a, 11b).Device (1) according to any of the preceding claims, further comprising longitudinal elastic means (29) which urge said second plate (5) forwards in the longitudinal direction.Device (1) according to any of the preceding claims, further comprising one or more free-play recovery elements (31) which are arranged between said first and second plates (3, 5) and apply horizontal and vertical forces for keeping said first and second plates (3, 5) aligned to each other.Device (1) according to claim 6, wherein a plurality of said free-play recovery elements (31) is provided, said free-play recovery elements (31) being symmetrically arranged with respect to the longitudinal middle line of said first and second plates (3, 5) and / or with respect to the transverse middle line of said first and second plates (3, 5).Seat cushion (100) comprising a seat cushion body (102) and a seat cushion front portion (104), which is separate from said seat cushion body and movable relative thereto, wherein said seat cushion (100) is provided with a device (1) according to any of the claims 1 – 7 and wherein said second plate (5) is fastened to said seat cushion front portion (104).
