[0008] Photographic technology has grown robustly since its inception, yet the primary obstacles to obtaining a high-quality image have not changed. This includes vibration and stabilization of the camera itself during operation as well as the ease with which the camera may be deployed from a stowed position to a ready position. For example, the earliest photographers used cameras on fixed tripods to capture a single image; the low sensitivity in early image media favored rigid tripods with mechanisms to minimize vibration for an extended period. The development of film, improvements in sensitivity, and rapid camera mechanisms permitted portable cameras which could be hand-held or mounted on moving vehicles. Eventually, the video camera was able to capture moving images on subsequent frames of a film strip. The video effect was even more pronounced when the camera was moving in relation to the targeted scene.

[0009] As cameras and tripods became increasingly portable, intrepid photographers travelled to increasing fantastic locations. In cases where the tripod was inconvenient or inaccessible, photographers set up cameras on top of other static objects including rocks and automobiles. In extreme cases, the camera could be stabilized by resting on the back, shoulder, or hand of an assistant. A variety of camera rigs were developed to accommodate the different situations that a photographer might encounter.

In these cases, attempts have been made to rest the camera on the vehicle’s surfaces such as the dashboard or the windowsill. Beanbags like those used by marksmen and shooters have been used to stabilize the camera on the dashboard or windowsill. Perhaps most commonly, photographers often shoot from vehicles, using them as blinds to prevent wildlife from fleeing and to observe more natural animal behavior than if they exited the vehicle. Despite these benefits, capturing images or video from within a vehicle also presents specific challenges.

[0053] The glass windows in the vehicle present a unique challenge to the photographer who is inside of the vehicle. Some passenger windows may be lowered to improve image quality, but the process of lowering the window interferes with the camera placement and readiness. In addition, resting the camera on various automotive surfaces is problematic because it requires the photographer to adopt an unnatural position relative to camera and the vehicle seat. As the photographer attempts to align his or her eye with the viewfinder or camera screen, he or she is more likely to crouch into an unnatural or uncomfortable position that cannot be maintained for long periods of time. Conversely, when a photographer maintains a natural position in the vehicle, resting the camera on an automotive surface may introduce an odd angle relative to the desired composition. Moving to a different surface may alleviate these issues, but at the cost of missing the desired framing.

Such surfaces in a vehicle are typically limited to a dashboard or center console; the vantage point from these surfaces is rarely ideal for an unobstructed photograph. On the other hand, the doors and associated windowsills provide a better vantage point but lack a suitable surface for resting the camera of a beanbag. Stacking beanbags can elevate the camera to improve the vantage point, but this introduces undesirable instability. In other instances, beanbags may comprise a lower surface that comprises an inverted “U” shape that fits over the bottom of the window aperture in a vehicle to provide a stable platform. However, as noted above, the low position of the beanbag provides a very unnatural position for the photographer. Additionally, the camera may be only passively resting on the beanbag with nothing securing the camera and lens to the surface, which could cause the camera to be inadvertently dislodged from the beanbag and fall out of the window.

In particular embodiments, the camera support 104 suspends the camera mounting system 100 from the vehicle 10 such that the camera mounting system 100 hangs from the vehicle 10. In some embodiments, the camera support 104 is configured to wrap around the window frame 16 surrounding the window aperture 18 of the door 12 of the vehicle 10. The camera support 104 may comprise a rectangular piece of material or cloth than may be folded along an axis to form matching rectangular or triangular halves or portions that can be placed over the door frame, with openings or grommets positioned through the camera support 104, as shown in FIGs. 16A- 16B. The camera support 104 may comprise a flexible strap 110 configured to wrap around the window frame 16. The flexible strap 110 may be formed of any suitable material, such as neoprene or nylon, and may have any suitable shape. For example, the flexible strap 110 may be a rope, string, strap, or chain, each of which provides suitable flexibility and adequate strength. This permits rotational, angular, and linear displacements of the camera 102 mounted on the camera support 104 with minimal effort from the user. In some embodiments, such as that shown in FIG. 17, the camera support 104 comprises a cord that wraps around the window frame 16 and suspends the support node 106 in the window.

[0064] In some embodiments, the hook and loop material 112 is replaced by a snap, buckle, threaded fastener, cinching strap, or another suitable fastener. The flexible strap 110 is configured to allow the door 12 to shut normally, despite the presence of the flexible strap 110 between the door 12 and the door frame 20. Thus, the flexible strap 110 may be compressible and / or may have a thin profile. The non-structural components of the door frame 20, such as a door gasket or seal, may further allow the door 12 to close normally.

[0065] In some embodiments, the flexible strap 110 comprises a plurality of sections of hook and loop material 112, as shown in FIGs. 6 and 8. Each of these sections may be separated from the others with a seam or gap 116. This allows an excess portion of the flexible strap 110 to be removed without threatening damage to the remainder of the flexible strap 110. For example, the user can wrap the flexible strap 110 around the window frame 16 and note which section of hook and loop material 112 is closest to one complete wrap around the window frame 16, one and a half wraps around the window frame 16, two wraps around the window frame 16, or any other desirable amount. This will most often be used by the driver photographing through the driver’s window opening (window aperture). Because of the balance point of virtually all camera and lens combinations the lens 138 will often extend outside the window aperture 18 of the vehicle 10. In some instances, multiple camera support 104 may be installed in multiple windows of the vehicle 10 so that a photographer can clip into the driver’s side window, and may also slide over and then clip into the passenger side mounting system.

A suspended camera mounting system, comprising: a camera support configured to attach to a portion of a vehicle, the camera support comprising: a flexible strap configured to wrap around a window frame surrounding a window aperture of a door of the vehicle, the flexible strap comprising a hook and loop material configured to enable attachment of the flexible strap to itself once wrapped around the window frame of the vehicle; and a quick-release mechanism suspended from the flexible strap; a support node suspended from the quick-release mechanism of the camera support, wherein the support node comprises a threaded fastener; and a camera assembly configured to be suspended from the camera support, the camera assembly comprising: a mounting plate configured to threadedly attach to the support node; a mounting shoe configured to slidably couple with the mounting plate; and a camera configured to attach to the mounting shoe, wherein the mounting plate and the mounting shoe are configured to allow positional adjustment of the camera with respect to the support node; wherein the suspended camera mounting system is configured to position the camera for image capture through the window aperture of the vehicle.

2. The suspended camera mounting system of claim 1, wherein the suspended camera mounting system is configured to position the camera such that at least a portion of the camera extends into the window aperture of the door of the vehicle.

3. The suspended camera mounting system of claim 1, wherein the suspended camera mounting system is configured to position the camera such that a user inside of the vehicle may access and operate the camera from a seated position.

The suspended camera mounting system of claim 1, wherein the camera assembly further comprises a collar coupled to the mounting shoe and configured to secure the mounting shoe to the camera by extending around a lens of the camera.Attorney Docket No. 22741.002WO-PCT5. A suspended camera mounting system, comprising: a camera support configured to attach to a portion of a vehicle, the camera support comprising a quick-release mechanism; and a support node suspended from the quick-release mechanism, wherein the support node is configured to attach to a camera assembly having a mounting plate coupled to a camera, wherein the mounting plate is configured to allow positional adjustment of the camera with respect to the support node; wherein the quick-release mechanism is configured to facilitate detachment of the support node from the camera support; and wherein the suspended camera mounting system is configured to position the camera for image capture through a window aperture of a door of the vehicle.

6. The suspended camera mounting system of claim 5, wherein the suspended camera mounting system is configured to position the camera such that at least a portion of the camera extends into the window aperture of the door of the vehicle.

7. The suspended camera mounting system of claim 5, wherein the suspended camera mounting system is configured to position the camera such that a user inside of the vehicle may access and operate the camera from a seated position.

8. The suspended camera mounting system of claim 5, the camera support comprising a flexible strap configured to wrap around a window frame surrounding the window aperture of the vehicle.

9. The suspended camera mounting system of claim 8, wherein the flexible strap comprises a hook and loop material configured to enable attachment of the flexible strap to itself once wrapped around the window frame of the vehicle.

10. The suspended camera mounting system of claim 5, wherein the support node comprises a threaded fastener.

11. The suspended camera mounting system of claim 10, wherein the mounting plate is configured to threadedly attach to the support node.Attorney Docket No. 22741.002WO-PCT12. A suspended camera mounting system, comprising: a camera support configured to attach to a portion of a vehicle; and a support node suspended from the camera support, the support node configured to attach to and support a camera; wherein the suspended camera mounting system is configured to position the camera for image capture through a window aperture of a door of the vehicle.

13. The suspended camera mounting system of claim 12, wherein the suspended camera mounting system is configured to position the camera such that at least a portion of the camera extends into the window aperture of the door of the vehicle.

14. The suspended camera mounting system of claim 12, wherein the suspended camera mounting system is configured to position the camera such that a user inside of the vehicle may access and operate the camera from a seated position.

15. The suspended camera mounting system of claim 12, wherein the camera support comprises a quick-release mechanism configured to facilitate detachment of the support node from the camera support.

16. The suspended camera mounting system of claim 12, wherein the support node is configured to attach to a mounting plate coupled to the camera, wherein the mounting plate is configured to allow positional adjustment of the camera with respect to the support node.

17. The suspended camera mounting system of claim 12, the camera support comprising a flexible strap configured to wrap around a window frame surrounding the window aperture of the vehicle.

18. The suspended camera mounting system of claim 17, wherein the flexible strap comprises a hook and loop material configured to enable attachment of the flexible strap to itself once wrapped around the window frame of the vehicle.
