[0049] The Recommended Bit Rate (RBR) procedure is used to provide the MAC entity with information about the bit rate which the gNB recommends. The bit rate is the RBR of the physical layer. Averaging window of default value 2000 ms may be applied.

[0050] The gNB may transmit the RBR MAC CE to the MAC entity to indicate the RBR for the UE for a specific logical channel and a specific direction (either uplink or downlink) . Upon reception of an RBR MAC CE the MAC entity may indicate to upper layers the recommended bit rate for the indicated logical channel and direction.

[0051] The MAC entity may request the gNB to indicate the RBR for a specific logical channel and a specific direction. If the MAC entity is requested by upper layers to query the gNB for the RBR for a logical channel and for a direction (i.e. for uplink or downlink) , the MAC entity may:

[0052] ● if a Recommended bit rate query for this logical channel and this direction has not been triggered:

[0053] ○ trigger a Recommended bit rate query for this logical channel, direction, and desired bit rate.

[0054] If the MAC entity has UL resources allocated for new transmission the MAC entity may:

[0055] ●for each Recommended bit rate query that the Recommended Bit Rate procedure determines has been triggered and not cancelled:

[0056] ○ if bitRateQueryProhibitTimer for the logical channel and the direction of this Recommended bit rate query is configured, and it is not running; and

[0057] ○ if the MAC entity has UL resources allocated for new transmission and the allocated UL resources can accommodate a Recommended bit rate MAC CE plus its subheader as a result of LCP as defined in clause 5.4.3.1:

[0058] ■ instruct the Multiplexing and Assembly procedure to generate the  Recommended bit rate MAC CE for the logical channel and the direction of this Recommended bit rate query;

[0059] ■ start the bitRateQueryProhibitTimer for the logical channel and the direction of this Recommended bit rate query;

[0060] ■ cancel this Recommended bit rate query.

[0061] The RBR MAC CE may be identified by a MAC subheader with LCID for bit rate recommendation message from the gNB to the UE and bit rate recommendation query message from the UE to the gNB, respectively. FIG. 2 illustrates an example of RBR MAC-CE, which may have a fixed size and consists of two octets defined as follows:

[0062] ● LCID: This field indicates the identity of the logical channel for which the recommended bit rate or the recommended bit rate query is applicable. The length of the field is 6 bits;

[0063] ● Uplink / Downlink (UL / DL) : This field indicates whether the recommended bit rate or the recommended bit rate query applies to uplink or downlink. The length of the field is 1 bit. The UL / DL field set to 0 indicates downlink. The UL / DL field set to 1 indicates uplink;

[0064] ● Bit Rate: This field indicates an index to Table 1 (shown as below) . The length of the field is 6 bits. For bit rate recommendation the value indicates the recommended bit rate. For bit rate recommendation query the value indicates the desired bit rate;

[0065] ● X: Bit rate multiplier. For UEs supporting recommended bit rate multiplier, when bitRateMultiplier is configured for the logical channel indicated by LCH ID (LCID) field, X field set to 1 indicates the actual value of bit rate is the value corresponding to the index indicated by the Bit Rate field multiplied by bitRateMultiplier.

[0066] ● R: reserved bit, set to 0.

[0067] Table 1: Values (kbit / s) for Bit Rate field

[0068] The Alternative Quality of Service (QoS) Profile (s) may be optionally provided for a GBR QoS Flow with Notification control enabled. If the corresponding PCC rule contains the related information, the SMF may provide, in addition to the QoS profile, a prioritized list of Alternative QoS Profile (s) to the NG-RAN. If the SMF provides a new prioritized list of Alternative QoS Profile (s) to the NG-RAN (if the corresponding PCC rule information changes) , the NG-RAN shall replace any previously stored list with it.

[0069] When the NG-RAN sends a notification to the SMF that the QoS profile is not fulfilled, the NG-RAN shall, if the currently fulfilled values match an Alternative QoS Profile, include also the reference to the Alternative QoS Profile to indicate the QoS that  the NG-RAN currently fulfils. The NG-RAN may enable the SMF to determine when an NG-RAN node supports the Alternative QoS feature but cannot fulfil even the least preferred Alternative QoS Profile.

[0070] Recent discussions in 3GPP and IETF are bringing various enablers in the networks for the application and the network to be aware of the network conditions, in order to adjust the application behavior, accordingly. Adjusting the data rate would be preferred by many use cases, especially by XR applications where adapting data rate is an intrinsic characteristic of the application traffic.

[0071] In 3GPP Release-19, rate control for XR is being discussed, and one of the methods considered to enable this is extending the Recommended Bit Rate (RBR) procedure which relies on MAC CEs exchanged or specifying a similar procedure between the UE and the gNB.

[0072] The main implications of changing the RBR can be listed as below:

[0073] ● The NW may decide to reestablish the session with an updated QoS Flow profile, or to update the QoS Flow profile to apply if different alternative QoS Profiles were authorized during the QoS Flow setup.

[0074] ● The UE (assuming to stay in the QoS Flow profile as before reporting rate adaptation) has to adjust its Logical Channel Prioritization (LCP) configuration (explicit signal from NW or implicitly with NW’s supervision) to be able to fill its UL grants with the updated rate.

[0075] On the NW side, upon reception of RBR query from the UE, it may decide to modify the PDU session again with the updated rate. Although this method can be seen as the optimal solution to execute, it may bring in several shortcomings. For example, the signaling overhead, as a reconfiguration of the bit rate may require a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) PDU session modification procedure, or if the rate change is very minor and no reestablishment is required, the NW would need to signal new configurations, e.g., LCP settings, to align UE’s behavior with the new RBR in the radio interface. This would require semi static (RRC-like) signaling that is costly, and not preferred in practice if it can be avoided. Another issue is the time it may require for the UE and the NW to align in how to operate the LCHs, if a signaling method (e.g., RRC reconfiguration or NAS PDU Session procedure) is triggered. The signaling exchange and processing may delay  the transmission of data packets waiting in the buffers. Both issues can cause severe impact on UE’s quality of experience (especially for interactive services such as XR) .

[0076] Therefore, addressing the consequences of adjusting RBR from UE side and minimizing the signaling overhead of adjusting different configurations are expected.

[0077] In accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution for LCP adaptation based on RBR. In this solution, an LCP adjustment configuration associated with at least one logical channel (LCH) is received by the first apparatus 110 from the second apparatus. The first apparatus 110 may determine, based on the LCP adjustment configuration and an RBR or network condition information received from the second apparatus, whether an LCP configuration update for a LCH is triggered and perform, based on the determination, at least one operation associated with the LCP configuration update for the LCH.

[0078] Example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0079] Reference is now made to FIG. 3, which shows a signaling chart 300 for communication according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 3, the signaling chart 300 involves a first apparatus 110 and a second apparatus 120. For the purpose of discussion, reference is made to FIG. 1 to describe the signaling chart 300.

[0080] As shown in FIG. 3, the second apparatus 120 may configure (302) the first apparatus 110 with an LCP adjustment configuration associated with at least one LCH. The scope of the LCP adjustment configuration may comprise at least one trigger for an autonomous LCP configuration update and respective one or more actions corresponding to the at least one trigger.

[0081] For example, the at least one trigger may comprise at least one RBR range. That is, within the LCP adjustment configuration, a range of RBR values may be marked as ‘autonomous range’ where, as long as RBR is within this range, the UE can take some actions.

[0082] As an example, the LCP adjustment configuration may indicate a relationship between RBR ranges and respective one or more actions for the LCP configuration update, which may, for example, refer to a list of different RBR ranges and respective one or more  actions. For each RBR range, one or multiple threshold value (s) for RBR value (s) may be involved, e.g., one value will be a threshold, two values would define a range.

[0083] In addition to the at least one RBR range, the at least one trigger may comprise at least one network condition information. For example, the network condition information may comprise an explicit congestion notification (ECN) mark and / or an RAN node congestion indication. In this case, the LCP adjustment configuration may indicate a relationship between network conditions and respective one or more actions for the LCP configuration update.

[0084] Optionally, the LCP adjustment configuration may also comprise one or configuration adaptation timers, which may define the period the first apparatus may wait before autonomously reconfiguring LCP operation for a LCH or a group of LCHs. In this situation, the LCP adjustment configuration may indicate respective adaptation timers for performing the respective one or more actions based on the at least one trigger.

[0085] In some embodiments, the LCP adjustment configuration may be configured for a specific LCH. In some other embodiments, the LCP adjustment configuration may be configured for a group of LCHs.

[0086] In some example embodiments, one or multiple configurations may be assigned to an LCH, to set a more detailed behavior of the first apparatus 110 for LCP if preferred. That is, the LCP adjustment configuration may comprise respective one or more sets of configuration parameters for the at least one LCH. In the LCP adjustment configuration, different sets of configuration parameters corresponding to the respective one or more actions may be included.

[0087] As described above, respective one or more actions may be configured in the LCP adjustment configuration corresponding to the at least one trigger. The one or more actions may relate to adjustments of a priority of the LCH, a prioritized bit rate (PBR) and / or a data radio bearer (DRB) .

[0088] In a case where the at least one trigger comprises at least one RBR range, an example of an LCP adjustment configuration indicating a relationship between RBR ranges and respective one or more actions for the LCP configuration update is listed as below:

[0089] Table 2: Policy set for updating LCP configurations

[0090] For example, the second apparatus 120 may send the LCP adjustment configuration to the first apparatus 110 via a radio resource control (RRC) signaling. The LCP adjustment configuration may be indicated by the following example information element structure in Table 3:

[0091] Table 3

[0092] As shown in FIG. 3, the second apparatus 120 may configure (304) the first apparatus 110 with a set of LCP rules including PBR and priority values for each of the LCHs at the first apparatus 110. In some embodiments, this configuration may be performed along with the LCP adjustment configuration (e.g., action (302) ) .

[0093] Then the first apparatus 110 may prepare (306) an RBR query report to the second apparatus 120 and send (308) the RBR query report to the second apparatus 120, e.g. via MAC CE or other suitable signaling. The second apparatus 120 may second (310) a response for the RBR query with an RBR to the first apparatus 110. It is to be understood that that the second apparatus 120 may send network condition information to the first apparatus 110 optionally or additionally.

[0094] Upon receiving the RBR or the network condition information, the first apparatus 110 may perform (312) a configuration check for autonomous LCP configuration update based on the received LCP adjustment configuration.

[0095] For example, if the first apparatus 110 receives an RBR from the second apparatus 120 and the received RBR falls within a RBR range, e.g., shown in Table 2, the first apparatus 110 may determine autonomous LCP configuration update is triggered and may perform corresponding actions associated with this RBR range.

[0096] If the first apparatus 110 determines the autonomous LCP configuration update is triggered, the first apparatus 110 may perform (314) autonomous LCP configuration update by performing corresponding actions based on the received RBR and the relationship between RBR ranges and respective one or more actions for the LCP configuration update, or based on the received network condition and the relationship between network conditions and respective one or more actions for the LCP configuration update.

[0097] That is, when the LCP adjustment configuration is activated, the first apparatus 110 may perform one or more of the following actions:

[0098] ● Tune the PBR used in the LCP procedure to the RBR without the need of reconfiguring the DRB (i.e., no need for RRC reconfiguration or NAS PDU Session modification) . This tune of the PBR may rely on a multiplier configuration or an offset value.

[0099] ● Tune the LCH priority used in the LCP procedure to the RBR without the need of reconfiguring the DRB (i.e., no need for RRC reconfiguration or NAS PDU Session modification) .

[0100] In some embodiments, when the adaptation timer associated with the one or more actions is configured, the first apparatus 110 may perform one or more actions corresponding to the RBR range or a network condition for the LCP configuration update for the LCH after an expiry of an adaptation timer.

[0101] Based on the LCP adjustment configuration shown in Table 3, as an example, if the adaptation timer is set to 0ms, then first apparatus 110 may immediately adjust LCP configuration to a new operation autonomously (instantaneous update on the configuration) .

[0102] If the adaptation timer is set to other value than 0ms (e.g., a round-trip time (RTT) value for the service) , first apparatus 110 may need to wait for that period after the trigger is detected to adjust any LCP configuration autonomously determined  autonomously. The adaptation timer is an optional attribute to provide in the configuration, if not provided, the first apparatus 110 may assume a default behavior such as 0ms (instantaneous) , RTT value, Packet Delay Budget (PDB) value, etc.

[0103] As mentioned above, the corresponding actions may refer to the adjustment of at least one of the LCH priority, the PBR, or the DRB. According to the RBR range within which the receive RBR falls, the first apparatus 110 may perform corresponding actions as shown in Table 2.

[0104] As an example, adjustment of the PBR may comprise replacing a current PBR with a configured PBR corresponding to the RBR range, setting the PBR with a minimum value between the configured PBR and the RBR, and / or applying a configured multiplier to the current PBR.

[0105] As another example, adjustment of LCH priority may comprise replace a current priority of the LCH with a configured priority corresponding to the RBR range.

[0106] In some example embodiments, the combination of multiple configurations applicable to a LCH with different actions may lead to different scenarios on how the first apparatus 110 may update LCP operation for an LCH or a group of them after an RBR update. For example:

[0107] ● Do not adjust priority, adjust PBR Prioritized Bit Rate without reconfiguring the DRB data radio bearer

[0108] ● Do not adjust PBR, adjust priority without reconfiguring the DRB

[0109] ● Do not adjust priority, adjust the PBR and reconfigure the DRB

[0110] ● Adjust the priority, adjust the PBR, and do not reconfigure the DRB

[0111] ● Adjust the priority, adjust the PBR, and reconfigure the DRB

[0112] In addition, if any of the triggers are valid, this LCP configuration update performed by the first apparatus 110 may be implicitly known at the second apparatus 120, because the second apparatus 120 knows both LCP adjustment configuration and the RBR or the network condition.

[0113] Then, after a completion of the LCP configuration update, when the first apparatus 110 receives (316) grant from the second apparatus 120, the first apparatus 110  may fill (318) the allocated grant with the updated LCP rules that are adjusted based on the recent RBR or the recent network condition.

[0114] It is also possible that autonomous LCP configuration adjustment may rely on alternative QoS profiles authorized by the core when setting up the QoS Flow. In this case, the application of one alternative QoS profile may depend on the RBR received from the RAN node. Each alternative QoS profile may have a dedicated LCP configuration. Then, when the RBR changes, then the first apparatus 110 may apply the corresponding alternative QoS profile configurations and matching LCP operation. In this case, the LCP adjustment configuration may indicate a relationship between RBR ranges and respective QoS profiles associated with the respective one or more actions.

[0115] As described above, the UE may be configured with new configuration (s) to implicitly adjust its LCP configuration (s) , after reception of Recommended Bit Rate (RBR) message from the RAN node.

[0116] These new configurations may be guidelines in the operation of the LCHs in the LCP that the RAN node provides to the UE when configuring the LCHs via semi-static signaling e.g., an RRC. This way, LCP operation through the session’s lifetime can have a more responsive behavior (e.g., shaping operation for the data traffic) to current network situation without requiring the network (e.g., RAN node or CN) to reconfigure the user plane explicitly. The solution of the present disclosure proposes:

[0117] ● UE is configured with a set of configurations for LCP procedure.

[0118] ● UE determines at least one parameter used in the LCP procedure (PBR, LCH priority, etc. ) based on signaled RBR and a set of configurations.

[0119] In this way, new configurations allow implicit adjust of LCP configuration at the UE side after RBR occurrence, which may avoid the DRB reconfiguration due to RBR update when the delta with the PBR value is within a configured range and the DRB reconfiguration due to RBR update when the priority reconfiguration in LCP is within a configured setup.

[0120] FIG. 4 shows a flowchart of an example method 400 implemented at a first apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 400 will be described from the perspective of the first apparatus 110 in FIG. 1.

[0121] At block 410, the first apparatus 110 receives, from a second apparatus, an LCP adjustment configuration associated with at least one LCH.

[0122] At block 420, the first apparatus 110 determines, based on the LCP adjustment configuration and an RBR, or network condition information received from the second apparatus, whether an LCP configuration update for a LCH is triggered.

[0123] At block 430, the first apparatus 110 performs, based on the determination, at least one operation associated with the LCP configuration update for the LCH.
