Abstract
Description
[0001] LIGHT EMITTING DEVICE COMPRISING A BASE STRUCTURE
[0002] FIELD OF INVENTION
[0003] The present invention relates to a light emitting device comprising a base structure for fixing accessories thereto, and to the use of such a base structure in such a light emitting device.
[0004] BACKGROUND
[0005] Luminaires, in particular outdoor luminaires, are often designed for a particular purpose and / or for a specific customer, and many different luminaires have to be kept in stock for different applications.
[0006] In the commonly used outdoor luminaires, a light emitting device is usually manufactured by assembling different components which are often inconvenient to unmount from each other for the purpose of maintenance or replacement. Indeed, often light emitting devices are designed with a particular design which is fixed, or which can only be changed to a limited extent.
[0007] Moreover, conventional light emitting devices, e.g. in outdoor luminaires, offer only a limited range of illumination products. When e.g. a different esthetical effect is desirable, or when e.g. a different light distribution and / or a different glare classification is required, e.g. because of a change in the law or regulations or a customer’s request, a new light emitting device has to be created each time.
[0008] Therefore, conventional light emitting devices lack modularity, or have limited modularity. Hence, it is necessary to manufacture light emitting devices for different applications, thereby increasing the manufacturing costs. In addition, a large number of components, e.g. accessories, are needed to address the needs of different customers, with many different components requiring different molds.
[0009] SUMMARY
[0010] An object of embodiments of the invention is to provide a light emitting device comprising a base structure. More in particular, embodiments of the invention aim to provide a light emitting device comprising a base structure for fixing accessories thereto in a convenient and modular way, i.e., to provide a modular light emitting device whose accessories can be replaced directly on site in a convenient way, depending on the site to be illuminated and / or the specific application and / or the customer’s request. Further, embodiments of the invention provide a use of such a base structure in such a light emitting device. According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a light emitting device comprising a housing, a carrier configured to be fixed to the housing, a light module disposed on the carrier and comprising a plurality of light sources, at least one accessory, and a base structure comprising a central base portion and a peripheral base portion connected to said central base portion. The central base portion is configured to be fixed to the carrier and / or to the housing, and the peripheral base portion is configured to be fixed to the at least one accessory.
[0011] In the context of the invention, it is meant by “housing” a component of a light emitting device, such as a luminaire head, which may comprise and / or enclose any one or more of the following electrical / electronic components of the light emitting device: a light source driving means, a light source dimming means, surge protection circuitry, electrostatic discharge protection circuitry, a fuse, a metering circuitry, a driving and / or control circuitry for any electrical components of the light module. It is further noted that the housing may, but need not, comprise and / or enclose the above- mentioned carrier, light module, at least one accessory, and base structure of the light emitting device. In some embodiments, the housing may comprise and / or enclose at least one of the above- mentioned components of the light emitting device.
[0012] In some embodiments, the housing may comprise at least one wall whereon the carrier is configured to be fixed. The at least one wall may be a plate or a sheet, e.g., a plate or a sheet of metal or other suitable material. In some embodiments, the housing may be a synonym of a foundry of the light emitting device, such as a foundry of a luminaire head. For example, the housing may comprise a heat sink for dissipation of heat from the light emitting device, and the carrier may be configured to be fixed to the heat sink. In some other embodiments, the housing may be made of a plastic material. By plastic material, it is meant a synthetic material made from a wide range of polymers. In particular, the at least one wall may be a plate or a sheet of a plastic material. In yet some other embodiments, the housing may be made of a composite material comprising some plastic material or any cheap moldable material. In some embodiments, the at least one wall may be a plate or a sheet of metal, and the remainder of the housing may be made of a plastic material or a composite material.
[0013] In some embodiments, the housing may comprise a transparent or translucent casing configured to at least partially surround the base structure and the at least one accessory. The transparent or translucent casing may also be configured to at least partially surround the carrier and the light module. In some embodiments, the above-mentioned at least one wall and the transparent or translucent casing of the housing may together enclose the above-mentioned carrier, light module, at least one accessory, and base structure of the light emitting device. In some embodiments, the at least one wall and the transparent or translucent casing of the housing may together enclose at least one of the above-mentioned electrical / electronic components of the light emitting device.
[0014] In some embodiments, the housing may further comprise a cover, such as an upper cover. At least one of the above-mentioned electrical / electronic components of the light emitting device may be arranged between the carrier and the cover. The above-mentioned at least one wall of the housing, e.g. the heat sink, the carrier, and the cover of the housing may together enclose at least one of the above-mentioned electrical / electronic components of the light emitting device.
[0015] In the context of the invention, it is meant by “carrier” a component of a light emitting device, such as a luminaire head, which may carry or support a light module, and which is fixed to the housing.
[0016] In some embodiments, the carrier may comprise a printed circuit board, PCB, whereon the plurality of light sources may be arranged in a way known to a person skilled in the art. In some embodiments, the plurality of light sources may comprise light emitting diodes, LEDs. In some embodiments, the carrier may comprise a gear plate. The gear plate may be substantially flat, e.g., a substantially flat sheet of metal or other suitable material. A PCB may be arranged on the gear plate. A surface area of the gear plate may be larger than a surface area of the PCB, or may be substantially the same, i.e., a portion of the gear plate may or may not surround the PCB.
[0017] In some embodiments, the gear plate may be configured to be fixed to the heat sink, and the central base portion may be configured to be fixed to the gear plate. In other embodiments, the central base portion may be configured to be fixed to the housing, e.g. to the heat sink or to another portion or wall of the housing. In yet other embodiments, the central base portion may be configured to be fixed to the carrier, e.g. to the gear plate, and to the housing, e.g. to the heat sink.
[0018] In the context of the invention, it is meant by “light module” a component of a light emitting device, such as a luminaire head, which is disposed on the carrier and comprises at least said plurality of light sources. In some embodiments, the plurality of light sources may be arranged on the carrier. For example, the carrier may comprise a PCB whereon the plurality of light sources may be arranged.
[0019] In some embodiments, the light module may further comprise an optical plate comprising one or more optical elements covering the plurality of light sources. In said embodiments, the central base portion may be disposed on and / or may surround the optical plate. The one or more optical elements may be aligned into a plurality of rows and columns to form a two-dimensional array. In some embodiments, the optical plate may correspond to a lens plate comprising one or more lenses covering the plurality of light sources.
[0020] In the context of the invention, a lens may include any transmissive optical element that focuses or disperses light by means of refraction. It may also include any one of the following: a reflective portion, a backlight portion, a prismatic portion, a collimator portion, a diffusor portion. For example, a lens may have a lens portion with a concave or convex surface facing a light source, or more generally a lens portion with a flat or curved surface facing the light source, and optionally a collimator portion integrally formed with said lens portion, said collimator portion being configured for collimating light transmitted through said lens portion and having e.g. the shape of a truncated cone. Also, a lens may be provided with a reflective portion or surface, referred to as a backlight element in the context of the invention, or with a diffusive portion.
[0021] It should be clear to the skilled person that other optical plates comprising one or more optical elements different from lenses may be envisaged in other embodiments, such as one or more reflectors, e.g. reflectors having a shape of a truncated cone.
[0022] In some embodiments, the light module may not comprise the above-mentioned optical plate. In said embodiments, the central base portion may be disposed on the carrier and / or may surround the plurality of light sources. For example, the carrier may comprise a PCB whereon the plurality of light sources may be arranged, and the central base portion may be disposed on the carrier, e.g. on the PCB, and / or may surround the plurality of light sources. In an embodiment wherein the carrier comprises a gear plate, the central base portion may be disposed on the gear plate and / or may surround the plurality of light sources.
[0023] In the context of the invention, it is meant by “accessory” a component of a light emitting device, such as a luminaire head, which is configured to be fixed to the peripheral base portion of the base structure, and which may interact with light emitted from the light module so as to modify at least one of the following properties of said light: an intensity, a light distribution, a color or color temperature. In some embodiments, the at least one accessory may have an esthetical effect.
[0024] In some embodiments, the at least one accessory may comprise any one of the following: a skirt, a diffuser, a color filter, a mask plate, a louver, such as a backlight louver, or a combination thereof.
[0025] In some embodiments, the skirt and / or the diffuser and / or the mask plate may interact with light emitted from the light module so as to modify a light distribution thereof, by e.g. narrowing or enlarging a light beam of said light and / or by blocking light rays emitted from the light module at particular emission angles with respect to the horizontal, e.g. at large emission angles below the horizontal, which may otherwise result in glare that would cause discomfort. In some examples, the skirt may further create shadow areas projected on a surface, such as a wall or a ground surface, by e.g. comprising a geometrical pattern, regular or irregular. In some other examples, the skirt may be made of a plain sheet, i.e., may not comprise any geometrical pattern, and thus may not further create projected shadow areas.
[0026] In some embodiments, the color filter and / or the diffuser may interact with said light so as to modify an intensity and / or a color or color temperature thereof, by e.g. having a colored surface. The diffuser may diffuse light emitted from the light module by e.g. having a translucent surface.
[0027] In some embodiments, the louver may be shaped such that it blocks light rays emitted from the light module in one or more particular directions and / or at particular emission angles with respect to the horizontal. For example, a backlight louver may be shaped such that it blocks light rays emitted by the light module in a backward direction with respect to the light emitting device, e.g. towards a pole or a wall, such as a facade of a building, supporting the light emitting device, and at large emission angles below the horizontal, which may otherwise result in glare that would cause discomfort. A height of the louver may be higher in said one or more particular directions than a height of the louver in the other directions. In the example of a backlight louver, a height of the backlight louver may be higher in said backward direction than a height of the backlight louver in the other directions, i.e., the forward and the side directions with respect to the light emitting device.
[0028] Embodiments of the invention are based inter alia on the insight that a modularity of conventional light emitting devices is inexistent or limited, said light emitting devices being designed with a particular design which is fixed, or which can only be changed to a limited extent. In addition, in conventional light emitting devices a large number of components, e.g. accessories, are needed to address the needs of different customers, with many different components requiring different molds.
[0029] Moreover, conventional light emitting devices, e.g. in outdoor luminaires, offer only a limited range of illumination products. Further, when e.g. a different esthetical effect is desirable, a completely new housing has to be created each time. Furthermore, most luminaires cannot be easily upgraded, e.g. with a new accessory, and cannot be easily adapted based on the desired application. If the accessory needs to be changed in order to have a different intensity, light distribution, glare classification, color or color temperature depending on the application (e.g. pedestrian area vs road, highway, crossroad), often the housing of the luminaire has to be changed and / or the components of the luminaire are inconvenient to unmount from each other for replacement of the accessory.
[0030] In addition, conventional light emitting devices, e.g. in outdoor luminaires, may have different external shapes and / or different internal spaces having different sizes and / or shapes, and / or may have different fixation locations and / or different fixations means for fixing an accessory thereto, such that a completely new accessory has to be created each time depending on the above characteristics.
[0031] By contrast, in the light emitting device of embodiments of the invention, the base structure comprises a central base portion and a peripheral base portion connected to said central base portion. The central base portion is configured to be fixed to the carrier and / or to the housing of the light emitting device, and the peripheral base portion is configured to be fixed to the at least one accessory.
[0032] Thus, by comprising such a base structure, the light emitting device of embodiments of the invention may offer various different light effects and / or light distributions and / or esthetical effects, optionally with a similar global look, without the need for changing other components of the light emitting device, e.g. the housing, when changing one accessory for another, the such that a customer can use a single product family for different environments (e.g. road, park, pedestrian path, highway, etc.).
[0033] Further, in the light emitting device of embodiments of the invention, the housing and / or the carrier and / or the light module can be the same for a large range of different accessories thanks to the use of such a base structure in the light emitting device. Thus, the light emitting device can be readily adjusted according to the desire of the customer by selecting the appropriate at least one accessory, and enables the selection of various types of accessories as described above. It is further noted that the housing and / or the carrier and / or the light module of the light emitting device may be molded parts, and that since said parts may be the same, the manufacturing costs can be significantly reduced.
[0034] Furthermore, since an external shape and dimensions of the base structure may be the same or similar, irrespective of the type of accessory that is fixed to the peripheral base portion of the base structure, a manufacturer of the light emitting device need not design and keep in stock different shapes of components thereof for different applications and / or for different positions of the accessory in the light emitting device.
[0035] Therefore, the light emitting device of embodiments of the invention offers increased modularity compared to conventional light emitting devices, which do not enable a large variety of accessories to be fixed thereto and which do not enable easy replacement of the accessories. Exemplary embodiments relate to a light emitting device for an outdoor luminaire. By outdoor luminaire, it is meant luminaires which are installed on roads, tunnels, industrial plants, stadiums, airports, harbors, rail stations, campuses, parks, cycle paths, pedestrian paths or in pedestrian zones, for example, and which can be used notably for the lighting of an outdoor area, such as roads and residential areas in the public domain, private parking areas, access roads to private building infrastructures, warehouses, industry halls, etc.
[0036] According to a preferred embodiment, the central base portion may comprise a mesh disposed on the light module and comprising a plurality of parallel mesh rods and at least one connection rod connecting the plurality of mesh rods. In some embodiments, a first connection rod connecting a first mesh rod to a second mesh rod may not be aligned with a second connection rod connecting the second mesh rod to a third mesh rod, i.e., the first and second connection rods may be disposed in alternance between the first mesh rod and the second mesh rod and between the second mesh rod and the third mesh rod in a similar arrangement as the one of bricks of a wall. Such an arrangement in alternance may offer increased resistance against deformation of the central base portion, in particular against shear stress of the central base portion. In other embodiments, the first connection rod may be aligned with the second connection rod, i.e., may form together with the plurality of mesh rods a grid of rows and columns in a similar arrangement as the one of a matrix. It should be clear to the skilled person that in yet other embodiments, other mesh shapes may be envisaged.
[0037] According to an exemplary embodiment wherein the light module further comprises an optical plate having a plurality of optical elements, at least one optical element may be disposed between two adjacent mesh rods and / or one mesh rod may be disposed between two adjacent optical elements and / or the at least one connection rod may be disposed between two adjacent optical elements. In an example wherein the mesh comprises a plurality of connection rods, at least one optical element may be disposed between two adjacent connection rods. It is noted that the mesh need not comprise a mesh rod disposed between each pair of adjacent columns of optical elements. In other embodiments wherein the light module does not comprise an optical plate, the mesh may be disposed on the carrier, e.g. on the PCB. At least one light source may be disposed between two adjacent mesh rods and / or one mesh rod may be disposed between two adjacent light sources and / or the at least one connection rod may be disposed between two adjacent light sources. In an example wherein the mesh comprises a plurality of connection rods, at least one light source may be disposed between two adjacent connection rods. In this way, the mesh may be configured such that it does not interfere with light emitted from the light module, whether the light module comprises the above-mentioned optical plate or not. In particular, the plurality of mesh rods and / or the at least one connection rod may be configured such that they do not intersect any light ray emitted from the light module, or at least intersect a minimal amount of such light rays, such that the mesh does not obstruct light emitted from the light module. For example, a height of the plurality of mesh rods and / or of the at least one connection rod may be substantially smaller than a height of the plurality of light sources, and optionally of the one or more optical elements in embodiments wherein the light module further comprises an optical plate.
[0038] According to a preferred embodiment, the mesh may be provided with at least two first fixation holes configured to respectively receive at least two first fixation elements for fixing the base structure to the carrier and / or to the housing. Preferably, the at least two first fixation elements comprise any one of the following: screws, locks, clamps, clips, or a combination thereof.

Accordingly, the light module, in particular the optical plate, and / or the PCB may be provided with corresponding holes.
[0040] In this way, existing fixation elements that are used to fix the light module to the carrier and / or to the housing may also be used to fix the base structure, and in particular the central base portion, to the carrier and / or to the housing, without the need to provide another fixation means for that purpose. For example, the at least two fixation holes provided to the mesh may be aligned with the existing holes that are provided to the light module and to the carrier and / or the housing, without the need to provide the light module and the carrier and / or the housing with other holes for that purpose.
[0041] According to a preferred embodiment, the at least two first fixation holes may be disposed at intersections between a mesh rod and a connection rod. In other embodiments, the at least two first fixation holes may be provided on a mesh rod and / or on a connection rod.

In embodiments wherein the carrier comprises a PCB whereon the plurality of light sources may be arranged, one of the carrier, e.g. the PCB, and the optical plate may comprise at least two pins, and the other one of the carrier, e.g. the PCB, and the optical plate may comprise at least two corresponding positioning holes for positioning the carrier, e.g., the PCB, with respect to the optical plate.
[0043] In other embodiments wherein the light module does not comprise an optical plate, one of the carrier, e.g. the PCB, and the central base portion, e.g. the mesh, may comprise at least two pins, and the other one of the carrier, e.g. the PCB, and the mesh may comprise at least two corresponding positioning holes for positioning the carrier with respect to the central base portion.

Accordingly, the carrier, e.g. the PCB, may be provided with corresponding holes. Preferably, the at least two second fixation elements comprise any one of the following: screws, locks, clamps, clips, or a combination thereof.

According to a preferred embodiment, the peripheral base portion may be provided with at least two third fixation holes configured to respectively receive at least two third fixation elements for fixing the at least one accessory to the base structure. Said at least two third fixation holes may extend through at least the outer lateral surface, and optionally through the inner lateral surface. In other words, said at least two third fixation holes may correspond to recesses or to through-holes.
[0049] According to a preferred embodiment, the peripheral base portion may be provided with at least two protrusions extending from at least one of the inner lateral surface and the outer lateral surface, and with at least two fourth fixation holes configured to respectively receive at least two fourth fixation elements for fixing the at least one accessory to the base structure. A first accessory of the at least one accessory may be provided with at least two holes corresponding to said at least two third fixation holes, and a second accessory of the at least one accessory may be provided with at least two holes corresponding to said at least two fourth fixation holes.
[0052] In this way, at least two accessories may be fixed to the base structure at the same time. For example, a skirt may be fixed to the base structure by means of the at least two third fixation holes and a diffuser may be fixed to the base structure by means of the at least two fourth fixation holes. It should be clear to the skilled person that other combinations of accessories may be envisaged.

[0063] In embodiments wherein the light module comprises an optical plate, at least one optical element of the one or more optical elements may be disposed between the two reinforcement legs of each of the at least two reinforcement members. The two reinforcement legs of each of the at least two reinforcement members may be disposed on the optical plate. In other embodiments wherein the light module does not comprise an optical plate, the two reinforcement legs of each of the at least two reinforcement members may be disposed on the carrier, e.g. on the PCB, and at least one light source may be disposed between the two reinforcement legs of each of the at least two reinforcement members.
[0064] According to a preferred embodiment wherein the central base portion comprises a mesh, the mesh may comprise a plurality of reflective barriers configured to reflect light rays, preferably having an incident angle with respect to an axis perpendicular to the light module between a predetermined angle between 60° and 85°, and 90°, emitted through one or more light sources of said plurality of light sources, preferably with a reflection angle with respect to said axis smaller than 60°.
