[0012] US5,927,745 discloses a folding utility cart for a providing a movable work platform which may be raised and lowered without the use of tools. The cart employs an upper support member that is spaced apart from a lower support member by a pair of cross braces. A biasing spring helps raise the upper support member into an elevated position, and a releasable lock secures the upper support member into the elevated position. A lock release disengages the upper support member from the elevated position. The cart also has a handle, support feet, and wheels, allowing use in a conventional manner.

[0017] The present disclosure concerns a work cart that comprises a bottom tray and a top tray; said bottom tray comprising a bottom face and a top face, with bottom tray side walls extending from the top face and defining together a bottom tray space; said top tray comprising a first face and a second face, with top tray side walls extending from the first face and defining together a top tray space; the work cart being convertible between a collapsed position at which said top tray rests over the bottom tray, with the first face facing the top face, and forming a confined space defined by the bottom tray space and the top tray space, and an extended position at which the top tray is supported by support members, with the second face facing the top face, at a parallel, spaced apart relation.

[0080] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
[0081] Attention is first directed to Figs. 1A-2B, showing a work cart according to an example of the disclosure, generally designated 10, illustrated at a fully collapsed position, and having a generally rectangle shape.
[0082] The work cart comprises a bottom tray 14 and a matching, top tray 16, both made of injection molded polymer. The bottom tray 14 comprises a bottom face 18 and a top face 20, with side walls (i.e. front wall, back wall and two side walls, collectively designated 22) extending from the top face 20, and defining together a bottom tray space 25.
[0083] Likewise, the top tray 16 comprises a first face 30, a second face 32, with side walls (i.e. front wall, back wall and two side walls, collectively designated 36) extending from the first face 30, and defining together a top tray space 38.

The wheels 65 comprise a connectivity plate 68, detachably attachable to the bottom face 18 of the bottom tray 14, by wheel attaching sockets 70 that are disposed at respective corners, whereby the wheels 65 can be readily attached / detached to the work cart 10 through engagement of the connectivity plate 68 to said wheel attaching sockets 70. Likewise, the wheels can be secured within the confined space 39 by respective stow wheel attaching sockets (not shown) disposed at inside surface portions of the work cart, where such sockets can be any wheel arresting arrangement. According to an embodiment of the disclosure, locomotive wheels can be a priori secured to the bottom tray of the work cart.
[0089] Once attached to the bottom face 18, the wheels 65 serve for locomoting the work cart 10 at either the collapsed position by rolling the four wheels 65 over a ground surface, or by pulling at a carrying handle 74 at an inclined position (Fig. 6), or at the extended position by rolling over the four wheels.

It is seen that at their stowed position, the support members 88A,88B are folded over one another and are received with the confined space 39.

In the illustrated example, each leg member of one of support members 88A,88B is fastened by a lock bolt 100, jointly manipulable by a locking bar 102 extending between bolts 100 of the legs of the support members, whereby the locking mechanism of both legs can be simultaneously manipulated to lock / unlock.
[0093] The locking mechanism 98 is configurable for arresting the respective support legs / members at either the stowed position, and at the deployed position. It is appreciated that other locking mechanisms can be utilized (not shown), e.g. fast lock mechanisms, and further wherein the locking mechanism of each leg can be independently operated.

Stowed position (Figs. 1A-2B) wherein external components (e.g. wheels 65, handle 74) are detached and stowed within the confined space 39 of the work cart 10; b. Assembled position (Figs. 3A - 3C) wherein the external components (e.g. wheels 65, handle 74) are assembled over external faces of the work cart, however the support members 88A,88B are yet collapsed and received within the confined space 39 of the work cart 10. At this position, according to the illustrated examples, the work cart 10 can be locomoted over wheels 65, as discussed hereinbefore; and
[0100] 2. An extended position (Figs. 4G, 4H), wherein the top tray 16 is supported by support members 88A,88B at their deployed position, with the second face 32 facing the top face 20 of the bottom tray 14, at a parallel, spaced apart relation.
[0101] The process of transferring the cart from the collapsed position to the extended position involves the following steps:
[0102] First, the work cart is positioned with the bottom face 18 placed on a ground surface, then, the latch fasteners 46 are released and the top tray 16 is removed and placed nearby (Figs. 2A-2B) at an upside-down position, i.e. placed over second face 32. Then the handle 74 and four wheels 65 are removed and attached at their respective locations (Fig. 3B).

[0105] Collapsing the work cart 10 from its extended position (Figs. 4G, 4H) into its collapsed position is performed by first releasing the top tray locking mechanism 124 by manipulating release lever 136 and simultaneously lifting the top tray 16 (in direction opposite to that of arrow 152).
[0106] Then, the support member locking mechanism 98 is unlocked by rotating bar locking bar 102 to release locking bolts 100, whereby the support members 88A,88B can be lifted so that the bottom end portions 94 disengage from the U-shaped support leg receptacle 90. The support members 88A,88B can then be folded over one another (swing in direction opposite with arrows 150), whereby the top tray 16 can be placed over the bottom tray and articulated thereto by latch fastener 46. If desired, wheels 65 and handle 74 can be detached and stowed within the confined space 39.
Claims
CLAIMS:
1. A work cart comprising a bottom tray and a top tray; said bottom tray comprising a bottom face and a top face, with bottom tray side walls extending from the top face and defining together a bottom tray space; said top tray comprising a first face and a second face, with top tray side walls extending from the first face and defining together a top tray space; the work cart being convertible between a collapsed position at which said top tray rests over the bottom tray with the first face facing the top face, forming a confined space defined by the bottom tray space and the top tray space, and an extended position at which the top tray is supported by support members with the second face facing the top face, at a parallel, spaced apart relation.
2. The work cart of claim 1, wherein the support members are disposable between a stowed position at which the support members are received within the confined space, and a deployed position at which the support members are secured at bottom portions thereof to the bottom tray and at top portions thereof to the top tray, fixedly retaining the top tray at the extended position.
3. The work cart of claim 1 or 2, wherein at the deployed position, a bottom portion of the support members is secured within the bottom tray space, and a top portion of the support members is secured within the top tray space.
4. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein at the collapsed position, at least a top portion of the bottom tray side walls overlap with at least a portion of the top tray side walls, whereby at the collapsed position the work cart assumes a box-like shape.
5. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein at the collapsed position at least a top portion of the bottom tray side walls is bottom tray are received within the top tray portion.
6. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the support members are four support legs, which at the deployed position are disposed at respective corners of the top tray and the bottom tray.
7. The work cart of claim 6, wherein two support legs of said four support legs extend at each side of the work cart, and being connected to one another to form reinforced support member frame structures.
8. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the support members form a reinforced frame structure that comprises a top bridge member extending between two support legs, wherein said top bridge member is engageable at a side portion of the second face of the top tray.
9. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the support members are pivotally articulated at respective comer portions of the top face of the bottom tray.
10. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 9, comprising a support member locking mechanism, configured for arresting the support members at least at the deployed position.
11. The work cart of claim 10, wherein the support member locking mechanism is associated with leg members at each side of the bottom tray; said locking mechanism being jointly operated with the leg members between respective locked and unlocked positions by a common lever extending between the leg members.
12. The work cart of claim 10, wherein the support member locking mechanism is independently associated with each of the leg members.
13. The work cart of claim 10, wherein the support member locking mechanism is a geometric arresting arrangement, wherein a bottom portion of the leg members being snug received within receptacles defined at the top face of the bottom tray.
14. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein the support members are extendible.
15. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 14, wherein at the deployed position, the support members extend substantially normal to the top face and the second face.
16. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 15, comprising a top tray locking mechanism for detachably attaching a top portion of the support members to the second face of the top tray.
17. The work cart of claim 16, wherein the top tray locking mechanism is a snap articulation mechanism, comprising a spring biased plunger at one of the top tray and the at least one of the support members, said plunger is engageable with a corresponding arresting location at the other one of the top tray and said at least one of the support members.
18. The work cart of claim 16, wherein the top tray locking mechanism comprises a latch release member extending at an outside side face of the top tray.
19. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 18, wherein the top face of the bottom tray comprises, at respective side portions thereof, a receptacle for receiving bottom portions of the support members, constituting a geometric locking arrangement.
20. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 19, wherein the second face of the top tray comprises, at respective side portions thereof, a receptacle for snugly receiving top portions of the support members.
21. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 20, wherein the support members extend from respective side portions of the top face of the bottom tray.
22. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 21, wherein at the stowed position, the support members at one side of the bottom tray are disposed atop support members at an opposite side of the bottom tray.
23. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 22, comprising a locking mechanism for securely locking the top tray over the bottom tray at the collapsed position.
24. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 23, wherein the work cart comprises a set of wheels for locomoting the work cart.
25. The work cart of claim 24, wherein wheels are detachably attachable at the bottom face of the bottom tray.
26. The work cart of claim 24 or 25, wherein the bottom face of the bottom tray comprises wheel attaching sockets for readily attaching / detaching wheels thereto.
27. The work cart of any one of claims 24 to 26, wherein the wheels of the work cart are storable within the confined space.
28. The work cart of any one of claims 24 to 27, wherein one or both of the top face of the bottom tray and the first face of the top tray comprise wheel attaching sockets for detachably attaching the wheels within the confined space, when at the collapsed position.
29. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 28, comprising one or more handles, on one or both of the top tray and the bottom tray.
30. The work cart of claim 29, wherein the one or more handles are disposable between an erect position in which the handles project out of the confined space, and a stored position in which the handles are at least partially received within said confined space.
31. The work cart of any one of claims 1 to 30, wherein faces of one or both of bottom tray and the top tray comprise one or more connectivity ports for detachably attaching thereto various utility modules.
32. The work cart of claim 31, wherein the connectivity ports are defined in one or both of an inside surface or an outside surface of the bottom tray and the top tray.
