[0002] The present invention relates to urinal accessories, particularly those related to mitigating the splashing of urine from sanitary fixtures designed for urination. More specifically, it relates to a urine splash mat for urinals.
[0003] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0004] A urinal is a sanitary fixture designed to collect urine, especially for people who urinate standing up. They are generally placed in public or private restrooms and are wall-mounted. A urinal consists of a body, usually made of porcelain, ceramic, or stainless steel, which collects the urine and has a surrounding wall or rim designed to contain the urine and guide the flow to the drain; a base with a drain grate positioned over a discharge hole where a plumbing pipe with a trap connects, allowing the liquid waste to be evacuated and preventing odors; and often includes a mechanism for rinsing or flushing to maintain surface hygiene.
[0005] When a user urinates in the urinal, the stream of urine hits the bottom of the urinal, causing splashing that can come out of the urinal and cause urine to accumulate on the floor or splash onto the user's pants, which is unpleasant and unhygienic.
[0006] Urine splashes can pose a serious health, hygiene, and cleanliness problem. When users use a urinal, the stream of urine strikes the base or walls of the urinal, causing splashes. These splashes are projected in all directions, first reaching the user, any part of their body, and then anything nearby or directly in front of the urinal. These splashes, in addition to the urine that hit the urinal, carry traces of any other liquid or substance present in the urinal at the time of use, along with any viruses or bacteria present in those traces. These situations can represent a high risk of infection for users.On the other hand, all these splashes, in addition to being projected at the user, are also projected in all directions, reaching the walls and floor adjacent to the urinal, causing the accumulation of urine on these surfaces, which, over the course of minutes and hours, decomposes, emitting strong unpleasant odors, and spreading any microorganism, virus or bacteria into the environment.
[0007] It has been found that some urinals have evolved into more ergonomic designs aimed at solving the problem of splashing, which channel the urine stream more efficiently, and in theory minimize splashing; but in practice that does not happen, a splash will always be generated when the urine stream hits a surface and even if the urinal has a design that tries to avoid it, a significant percentage of urine splashes to the sides and front, affecting the users.
[0008] Other urinals have developed a textured bottom to try to break the stream and prevent splashing; but they are not very effective either, because hard surfaces will always deflect, bounce and reflect some portion of the urine stream, splashing drops of urine away from the point of contact of the urine stream, so ultimately the problem persists.
[0009] Solid devices made of flexible materials, such as rubber or plastic screens or mats, have also been developed. These are placed on the bottom of the urinal to prevent solid waste from entering the drain. These screens or mats usually have small holes to allow the liquid to flow downwards, preventing solid waste from passing through; however, the splashing effect persists and the hygiene problem is not solved.
[0010] There are also other mats that have helped to minimize this problem, adding elements on the top surface to prevent splashing, as well as others on the bottom to prevent possible pooling.
[0011] Although other anti-splash mats are already available on the market, most are standard-sized and have a large volume of material, placing them in a higher price segment than traditional mats without splash protection. Furthermore, these existing mats are not very effective in that they don't optimally channel the urine stream; some still cause urine to accumulate at times, leading to limescale buildup at the bottom of the urinal; others still don't significantly reduce splashing; and there are defects in the shape and configuration, distribution and density of the fibers on the top surface, and a lack of compatibility with different urinal designs and models, among other issues.
[0012] The present invention is directed to a novel urine splash mitigation mat for urinals that solves many of the aforementioned problems.
[0013] A search was conducted to determine the closest prior art, and the following documents were found:
[0014] US Patent No. 5604937A, filed by Robert A. Davenport on October 26, 1995, was located. It discloses a screen assembly that includes feet or risers that rely on the lower surface to maintain a spacing relationship between at least the marginal edge of the screen assembly. This spacing allows liquid to flow between the feet or risers while simultaneously preventing the passage of unwanted solid materials. The main body of the screen assembly is provided with a plurality of conical openings that extend through the thickness of the screen wall only. These openings provide fluid communication through the screen and minimize splashing caused by an impacting stream of urine.However, the screen does not include filaments on its upper surface, so splashing is not completely avoided and remains a considerable problem; the configuration only allows the screen body to be raised to allow urine to flow underneath and prevent solids from passing into the drainage grid; the upper surface is smooth and only includes spaced holes with a conical cross-section for the passage of urine; but it never allows the urine stream to be dampened and broken up, so splashing occurs.
[0015] Patent application US5774905A, filed by Wagner Leonard E. and Marshall Dana S. on August 19, 1997, was located, disclosing a deodorant-containing device for a plumbing fixture. The device generally comprises a base, having an upper and a lower surface, and a deodorant-receiving cavity. The base has a plurality of upwardly extending pin elements positioned on its upper surface. The pin elements deflect and limit liquid splashes directed toward the base. A cover can be releasably attached to the underside of the base to releasably retain the deodorant material within the cavity. The device 1 primarily comprises a base 2, having an upper surface 3 and a lower surface 4, and a deodorant-receiving cavity 5.The base 2 is preferably a relatively thin, flat member with its upper surface substantially covered by a plurality of closely spaced, upward-extending pin members 6. The pin members 6 are preferably arranged in a grid along the upper surface of the base 2 and provide a means of deflecting liquid directed toward the upper surface of the base and limiting splashing. The deodorant receiving cavity 5 extends upward from the base 2 and aligns with the opening 7, providing a means of allowing the insertion of deodorant or deodorizing material into the cavity 5. The upper surface 3 of the base 2, the upper portion 9 of the cavity 5, is also covered with a plurality of pin members 6.
[0016] The base 2 also includes wedge members 10 on its lower surface 4. The wedge members 10 support the base 2, and thus the device 1, when the base is placed inside a plumbing fitting. The wedge members 10 generally comprise a series of relatively thin arms oriented radially on the lower surface of the base and preferably decrease in height toward the outer edge of the base, so that their innermost ends 11 are thicker or taller than their outermost ends 12. Both the deodorizing cavity 5 and the base 2 include a plurality of openings or holes 17 through their upper surfaces. Similarly, the cap 14 also contains a series of holes 17 passing through it. Generally, the holes 17 will be arranged in a grid pattern so that the individual holes are spaced between the pin members 6.

As can be seen in Figure 3, the lower surface of the device is not flat, so it does not sit completely flat at the bottom of the urinal. [0019] Therefore, the urine splash mitigation mat for urinal of the present invention was developed, which is compact, lightweight, efficient, with a configuration, density, distribution and shape of both the filaments on the upper face, as well as the drainage holes, that offer high efficiency on the urine jets incident on the surface of the mat.
[0020] OBJECTIVES OF THE INVENTION
[0021] The main objective of the present invention is to make available a urine splash mitigation mat for urinals that is structurally compact, lightweight, efficient, with a configuration, density, distribution and shape, both of the filaments on the upper face, and of the drainage holes, such that they offer a high efficiency in mitigating splashes from the urine jets incident on the surface of the mat.
[0022] Another objective of the invention is to provide said urine splash mitigation mat for urinal, in which the configuration, distribution, shape, density and dimensions of the plurality of filaments on the upper face of the mat induce a highly efficient refractive effect on the liquid jets incident on the upper surface of the mat.

[0030] BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0031] In general, the urinal urine splash mitigation mat, according to the present invention, comprises a substantially flat body of constant thickness defining an upper surface and a lower surface, with a plurality of through-drainage holes from the upper surface to the lower surface, arranged in parallel horizontal rows, and comprising on its lower surface a plurality of vertical support legs at the bottom of the urinal, arranged in parallel horizontal rows, each row of vertical legs arranged between two adjacent rows of drainage holes, but with a lower density than these, distributed equidistantly across the entire lower surface;and where its upper face comprises a urine jet impact zone with a plurality of vertical conical filaments that disperse and diffuse the urine jet impact, distributed in a polygonal arrangement around each drainage orifice.

CLAIMS Having sufficiently described the invention, the following claims are claimed as property.
1. A urine splash mitigation mat for a urinal characterized by comprising a substantially flat body defining an upper surface and a lower surface, with a plurality of conical drainage holes passing through the upper surface to the lower surface, distributed in parallel horizontal rows, and comprising on its lower surface a plurality of vertical support legs on the bottom of the urinal, distributed in parallel horizontal rows and wherein each row of vertical legs is arranged between two adjacent rows of drainage holes, but with a lower density than these, distributed throughout the lower surface and equidistant from each other; and wherein on its upper face it comprises a urine jet impact zone with a plurality of vertical conical filaments dispersing and diffusing the urine jet impact distributed in a polygonal arrangement around each drainage hole.

The urine splash mitigation mat for urinal, according to claim 1, characterized in that said vertical conical filaments dispersing and diffusing the impact of the urine jet have a height ranging from 8 mm to 25 mm, with a base diameter ranging from 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm and an upper end diameter of between 1 mm and 2 mm.

The urine splash mitigation mat for urinals, according to claim 1, characterized in that the plurality of vertical support legs have a conical shape whose support end is of smaller diameter, comprising a base diameter ranging from 2.85 mm to 3.85 mm and a support end diameter ranging from 2.77 mm to 3.17 mm, and a height ranging from 2 mm to 6 mm.
19. The urine splash mitigation mat for urinal, according to claim 1, characterized in that the plurality of vertical support legs have a ratio between their height and their base diameter from 1 to 1 to 1.88 to 1 and preferably 1.26 to 1.
