[0003] When a packaging, e.g. box, is closed, the cover of the box can be secured onto the box via a locking mechanism For a disposable box, e.g. a cardboard box, there are many types of locking mechanism. For example, the locking mechanism may come in the form of a tab on the cover that can be inserted into a slot on the box so that the cover is secured to the box. However, such a locking mechanism does not effectively secure the cover to the box as the cover can be easily opened accidentally. For example, the tab can easily be dislodged from the slot when the box is knocked.

[0004] Often, it is also important to ensure that the content of the box is not tampered with or when the box is opened when not supposed to. For example, the box for an electronic good or food should not be opened unless received by the buyer There are many ways to ensure that the content of the box is not tampered with. In this way, the buyer is assured that the content of the box is not tampered with when the sticker is not destroyed. However, such a way of tamper proofing the box is more costly and time consuming. Locking mechanism 100 includes an engaging member 110 connected to the first panel 12 and adapted to be inserted into the second panel 14 to engage the second panel 14; and a locking member 120 pivotally connected to the second panel 14 and adapted to rotate pivotally to lock the engaging member 110 within the second panel 14 to prevent the engaging member 110 from being accessible from outside the second panel 14.

[0029] Referring to Fig. 1A, for the purpose of describing the locking mechanism 100 and implementation thereof, a box is used to depict the packaging 10 from hereon. However, the packaging 10 is not restricted to a box and can be any packaging having a base container 16 and a cover, i.e. with parts having a first panel 12 and a second panel 14. Hence, a packaging and a box is used interchangeably. Box 10 may include a base container 16 and a cover 15 adapted to cover the base container 16. Base container 16 may include a base panel (not shown in Fig. 1A) having a perimeter edge 16E, a perimeter wall 16W extending from the perimeter edge 16E Cover 15 is pivotally connected to the perimeter wall 16W. In this embodiment, the cover 15 may be the first panel 12, and the perimeter wall 16W may be the second panel 14. [0030] Engaging member 110 may include a flap 112 extending from the first panel 12, the locking member 120 may include a tongue 18, the second panel 14 may include an aperture 16A having an edge 16D, and the tongue 18 may be pivotally connected to the edge 16D of the aperture 16A. Flap 112 is insertable into the aperture 16A to engage the second panel 14 and the tongue 18 is adapted to rotate from the aperture 16A to abut the flap 112 in the aperture 16A to lock the flap 112 in a locked position. As shown in Fig. 1 A, the flap 112 may extend from a front edge 15F of the cover 15 and folded onto a front wall 16F of the perimeter wall 16W as well as the aperture 16A on the perimeter wall 16W of the box 10. Tongue 18 may extend from a bottom edge 16AB of the aperture 16A. Aperture 16A is adapted to receive the flap 112 and tongue 18 therein. Tongue 18 may be cut out from the front wall 16F leaving a side attached to the front wall 16F to create the aperture 16A. While the tongue 18 may be of the same shape as the aperture 16A and can be folded into the box 10 at about a fold line 16L along the bottom edge 16AB, the tongue 18 can be of any shape and of a different shape as the aperture 16A. When in the covered position, the flap 112 overlaps the aperture 16A or the tongue 18.

[0031] Fig. IB shows a front view of the box 10 in Fig. 1 A. As shown in Fig. IB, the flap 112 has a connected end 112C connecting the flap 112 to the first panel 12 and an engaging end 112E opposite the connected end 112C; a pair of ears 130 extending from the engaging end 112E and in opposite direction, such that the pair of ears 130 extends beyond the size of the aperture 16A. When the flap 112 is inserted into the aperture 16A, the pair of ears 130 is adapted to spread within the aperture 16A and extend beyond the size of the aperture 16A to enable the flap 112 to engage the second panel 14. Each of the pair of ears 130 may include a butt 130B for abutting the flap 112 against a top edge 16AT of the aperture 16A when the flap 112 is inserted into the aperture 16A. Engaging end 112E of the flap 112, with the pair of ears 130, may be of similar profile as the aperture 16A and may be wider than the aperture 16A.

[0032] Fig. 2A-Fig. 2F show the steps of the locking mechanism 100 locking the cover 15 onto the base container 16 of the box 10. Essentially, the flap 112 may be folded into the aperture 16 A in the perimeter wall 16W and once within the aperture 16A, the tongue 18 i s pushed away from the aperture 16A and into the box 10 to abut the flap 112 thereby retaining the flap 112 in a locked position within the box 10. In this way, the cover 15 is retained onto the box 10 unless the cover 15 is detached from the flap 112. As the tongue 18 is pushed into the box 10, it is inaccessible from outside the box 10 and thus difficult to extract the tongue 18 out of the box 10. Once the flap 112 is detached from the cover 15, the box 10 can be opened. However, as the flap 112 is detached, the cover 15 may no longer be able to be locked back onto the box 10 thereafter. Tn this way, a buyer will know that the box 10 has been opened if the flap 112 is detached from the cover 15 when the buyer receives the box 10.

[0033] Referring to Fig. 2A, Fig. 2A shows the box 10 in an open position where the cover 15 is not covering the base container 16. As shown in Fig. 2A, the flap 112 extends from the cover 15 and has yet to be folded. Front wall 16F may be cut along a cut line 16C and stops at the fold line 16L to separate the tongue 18 from the front wall 16F. Fold line 16L may be parallel to the front edge 15F of the cover 15. Hence, the tongue 18 is foldable along the fold line 16L.

At this point, it is difficult to pull the flap 112 out of the aperture 16A without damaging the flap 112. As the flap 112 is pushed into the aperture 16A, the tongue 18 is being pushed by the flap 112 into the box 10. Folding line 112F of the flap 112 divides the flap 112 into an upper portion 112U and a lower portion 112L, such that the upper portion 112U is disposed against the front wall 16F of the perimeter wall 16W and the lower portion 112L is inserted into the aperture 16A.

Lower portion 112L of the flap 112 may include a linear indentation parallel to the tongue 18 to receive an edge of the tongue 18 within and secure the tongue 18 in the locked position.

Box 50 includes a base container 56 having a base panel 56B having a perimeter edge 56E, a perimeter wall 56W extending from the perimeter edge 56E; a cover 55 adapted to cover the base container 56, such that the cover 55 may include a first side cover 55R and a second side cover 55E, both pivotally connected to opposite sides of the perimeter wall 56W. To close the box 50, the third side cover 55T and the fourth side cover 55U may first be folded to cover the base container 56 followed by the second side cover 55E, then the first side cover 55R. Flap 512 may then be inserted into the aperture 56A and the tongue 58 may then be pushed into the box 50 to lock the flap 512 in the locked position.

First side cover 65R is adapted to overlapthe second side cover 65E and lockable to the perimeter wall 66W to cover the base container 66.

[0047] As shown in Fig. 6, the locking mechanism 600 may be incorporate into the box 60 with a two-part cover pivotally connected to the opposing sides of the perimeter wall 66W of the box 60. In this embodiment, the locking mechanism 600 is in a pair. Pair of flaps 612 may extend from opposite edges of the first side cover 65R and there may be two corresponding apertures 66A on the opposing sides of the perimeter wall 66W of the box 60. In this embodiment, the first side cover 65R may overlap the second side cover 65E such that when the flaps 612 of the first side cover 65R are locked into the apertures 66A, the second side cover 65E is being secured down by the first side cover 65R. Second side cover 65E may include a pair of wings 65EW disposed at opposite edges of the second side cover 65E such that the pair of wings 65EW can be folded and overlaps onto the perimeter wall 66W to prevent the second side cover 65E from sinking into the box 60. When the cover 65 is closed, the pair of ears 630 of each flap 612 may be pinched together when inserting the flaps 612 into the respective apertures 66A Thereafter, both tongues 68 may be pushed inward of the box 60 to lock the flaps 612 in the locked position. In this way, the cover 65 may be locked to the base container 66 easily by one person using both hands on the pair of locking mechanisms 600 concurrently.

There may be more than one locking mechanism 700 on one or more sides of the perimeter wall 76W of the box 70. As shown in all the embodiments above, the cover 75 may be pivotally connected tothe box 70. However, the cover 75 may be separated from the box 70 and there may be a locking mechanism 700 on at least two opposing walls, e g. 3 walls, 4 walls, etc., to secure the cover 75 to the box 70.

As shown in Fig. 8, the locking mechanism 800 may be implemented on a bag or any forms of packaging that has a cover 85 and a base container 86 with a perimeter wall 86W. Claims

Claim1. A locking mechanism for locking a packaging having a first panel and a second panel, the locking mechanism comprising,an engaging member connected to the first panel and adapted to be inserted into the second panel to engage the second panel; anda locking member pivotally connected to the second panel and adapted to rotate pivotally to lock the engaging member within the second panel to prevent the engaging member from being accessible from outside the second panel.

2. The locking mechanism according to claim 1, wherein the engaging member comprises a flap extending from the first panel, the locking member comprises a tongue; and the second panel comprising an aperture having an edge; wherein the tongue is pivotally connected to the edge of the aperture; and wherein the flap is insertable into the aperture to engage the second panel and the tongue is adapted to rotate from the aperture to abut the flap in the aperture to lock the flap in a locked position.

The locking mechanism according to claim 2, wherein the flap comprises a connected end connecting the flap to the first panel and an engaging end opposite the connected end; a pair of ears extending from the engaging end and in opposite direction, wherein the pair of ears extends beyond the size of the aperture, wherein the pair of ears, when the flap is inserted into the aperture, is adapted to spread within the aperture and extend beyond the size of the aperture to enable the flap to engage the second panel.

The locking mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the packaging comprises a base container and a cover adapted to cover the base container, wherein the base container comprises a base panel having a perimeter edge, a perimeter wall extending from the perimeter edge, wherein the cover is pivotally connected to the perimeter wall, and wherein the cover is the first panel and the perimeter wall is the second panel.

The locking mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the packaging comprises a base container and a cover adapted to cover the base container, wherein the base container comprises a base panel having a perimeter edge, a perimeter wall extending from theperimeter edge, wherein the cover is pivotally connected to the perimeter wall, and wherein the perimeter wall is the first panel and the cover is the second panel.

The locking mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the packaging comprises a base container comprising a base panel having a perimeter edge, a perimeter wall extending from the perimeter edge; a cover adapted to cover the base container, wherein the cover comprises a first side cover and a second side cover, both pivotally connected to opposite sides of the perimeter wall, wherein the first panel is the first side cover and the second panel is the second side cover.

The locking mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the locking mechanism comprises a pair of engaging members extending from opposite sides of the first panel and a pair of locking members pivotally connected to the second panel, wherein the pair of engaging members is adapted be inserted into the second panel to engage the second panel and the pair of locking members is adapted to rotate pivotally to lock the pair of engaging members within the second panel to prevent the pair of engaging members from being accessible from outside the second panel; wherein the packaging comprises a base container comprising a base panel having a perimeter edge; a perimeter wall extending from the perimeter edge, a cover adapted to cover the base container, wherein the cover comprises a first side cover and a second side cover, both pivotally connected to opposite sides of the perimeter wall, wherein the first panel is the first side cover and the second panel is the perimeter wall, and wherein the first side cover is adapted to overlap the second side cover and lockable to the perimeter wall to cover the base container.

8. The locking mechanism according to claim 7, wherein each of the pair of engaging members comprises a flap extending from the first panel; each of the pair of locking members comprises a tongue; and the second panel comprises a pair of apertures each having an edge; wherein each tongue is pivotally connected to the edge of each of the pair of apertures; and wherein each flap is insertable into each of the pair of apertures and each tongue is adapted to rotate from each of the pair of apertures to abut each flap in the each of the pair of apertures to lock each flap in the each of the pair of apertures in a locked position to prevent each flap from being accessible from outside of the each of the pair of apertures.

A packaging comprising:a base container comprising a base panel having a perimeter edge, a perimeter wall extending from the perimeter edge;a cover pivotally connected to the perimeter wall and adapted to cover the base container,a locking mechanism comprising,an engaging member connected to the cover and adapted to be inserted into the perimeter wall to engage the perimeter wall; anda locking member pivotally connected to the perimeter wall and adapted to rotate pivotally to lock the engaging member within the perimeter wall to prevent the engaging member from being accessible from outside the perimeter wall.

A packaging comprising:a base container comprising a base panel having a perimeter edge, a perimeter wall extending from the perimeter edge;a cover pivotally connected to the perimeter wall and adapted to cover the base container;a locking mechanism comprising,an engaging member connected to the perimeter wall and adapted to be inserted into the cover to engage the cover; anda locking member pivotally connected to the cover and adapted to rotate pivotally to lock the engaging member within the cover to prevent the engaging member from accessible from outside the cover.

11. A packaging comprising:a base container comprising a base panel having a perimeter edge, a perimeter wall extending from the perimeter edge;a cover comprising a first side cover and a second side cover, both pivotally connected to opposite sides of the perimeter wall and adapted to cover the base container;a locking mechanism comprising,an engaging member connected to the first side cover and adapted to be inserted into the second side cover to engage the second side cover; and a locking member pivotally connected to the second side cover and adapted to rotate pivotally to lock the engaging member within the second side cover to prevent the engaging member from being accessible from outside the second side cover.

12. A packaging comprising:a base container comprising a base panel having a perimeter edge; a perimeter wall extending from the perimeter edge;a cover adapted to cover the base container, wherein the cover comprises a first side cover and a second side cover, both pivotally connected to opposite sides of the perimeter wall;a locking mechanism comprising a pair of engaging members extending from opposite sides of the first side cover and a pair of locking members pivotally connected to the perimeter wall, wherein the pair of engaging members is adapted be inserted into the perimeter wall to engage the perimeter wall and the pair of locking members is adapted to rotate pivotally to lock the pair of engaging members within the perimeter wall to prevent the pair of engaging members from being accessible from outside the perimeter wall; and wherein the first side cover is adapted to overlap the second side cover and lockable to the perimeter wall to cover the base container.
