[0049] H16521 WO DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0050] Referring to the figures, there is provided a bicycle 1000 in accordance with the present disclosure.

[0051] The bicycle 1000 includes a bicycle frame 100 and a battery module 10. The bicycle frame 100 includes a first frame portion 1 10 and a second frame portion 120 pivotably connected to the first frame portion 1 10.

[0052] The first frame portion 110 is suitable for supporting a seat post 90, and may support a pedal assembly 70. The second frame portion 120 is a part of the bicycle frame 100 which is suitable for supporting a ground engaging rear wheel 50b. The rear wheel 50b is rotatably connected to a part of the second frame portion 120, with said rear wheel 50b rotatable relative to the second frame portion 120 about an axis of rotation Xb. The ground engaging rear wheel 50b may include a rear tyre 52b which extends circumferentially around the periphery of the wheel 50b.

[0053] The second frame portion 120 is pivotably connected, via connection methods known in the art, to the first frame portion 110, and is moveable relative to the first frame portion 110 between an in-use ridable condition and a stowed condition. In the in-use ridable condition, the second frame portion 120 may be positioned generally rearwardly of the first frame portion 110 such that the rear wheel 50b is positioned rearwardly of the first frame portion 110 and the user of the bicycle 1000 during normal operation. In the stowed condition, the second frame portion 120 may be pivotably moved relative to the first frame portion 110, such that at least a portion of the second frame portion 120 and the rear wheel 50b are positioned generally underneath the first frame portion 110. In the stowed condition, the second frame portion 120 and rear wheel 50b may be generally in line with the first frame portion 110, for instance, when the bicycle 1000 is viewed in a plan view. In other embodiments, the second frame portion 120 may be pivotably moved relative to the first frame portion 110, such that at least a portion of the second frame portion 120 and the rear wheel 50b are positioned laterally to a side of the first frame portion 1 10.

[0054] In embodiments, the bicycle frame 100 may include a third frame portion 130, wherein said third frame portion 130 may be a part of the bicycle frame 100 to which a ground engaging front wheel 50a is rotatably connected to, with said front wheel 50a rotatable relative to the third frame portion 130 about an axis of rotation Xa. The ground engaging front wheel 50a may include a front tyre 52a which extends circumferentially around the periphery of the wheel 50a. The third frame portion 130 may be pivotably connected to the first frame portion 1 10, and may be moveable relative to the first frame portion 110 between an in-use ridable condition and a stowed condition. In the in-use ridable condition, the third frame portion 130 may be positioned generally in front of the first frame portion 110 such that the front wheel 50a is positioned in front of the first frame portion 110 and the user of the bicycle 1000 during normal operation. In the stowed condition, the third frame portion 130 may

[0055] H16521 WO be pivotably moved relative to the first frame portion 110 such that the third frame portion 130 and front wheel 50a are positioned laterally to a side of the first frame portion 110.

[0056] The bicycle 1000 includes a battery module 10. The battery module 10 is releasably connected, directly or indirectly, to the first frame portion 110. For example, the battery module 10 may be constructed such that it may be connected directly to the structure of the first frame portion 110, or it may be constructed such that it may be connected to a docking or retaining assembly 300 which is connected to, or forms part of, the first frame portion 110. In embodiments the bicycle 1000 may be an electric bicycle including at least one electric motor 60. The electric motor 60 may be drivingly connected to a wheel of the bicycle 1000, such as the rear wheel 50b. The battery module 30 may be electrically connected to the electric motor 60 such that it may provide electrical power to it. The battery module 30 may also be electrically connected to other parts and features of a bicycle 1000, such as lights, information display systems or electrically assisted components of the bicycle 1000.

[0057] When the battery module 10 is connected to the bicycle 1000, it is positioned between the first frame portion 1 10 and a part of the second frame portion 120 when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition. As shown in the figures, the battery module 10 is positioned rearwardly of the first frame portion 120 and in front of the rear wheel 50b supported by the second frame portion 120.

[0058] The battery module 10 may further include a battery housing 30, the battery housing 30 accommodating at least one battery cell, and may further accommodate other features such as, but not limited to, a charging port, or a plurality thereof, control electronics and LEDs. The battery housing 30 may include a side portion 32, a further side portion 34, an upper portion 36 and a lower portion 38. The battery housing 30 may include a centre portion 31 , from which the side, further side, upper and lower portions 32, 34, 36, 38 protrude from or otherwise extend from. In other embodiments, the aforementioned portions 32, 34, 36, 38 may be provided as portions which are connected or connectable to the battery housing 30. The battery module 10 may be formed such that when the second frame portion 129 is in its in-use condition, the second frame portion 120 prevents or at least inhibits disconnection of the battery module 10 from the first frame portion 110, as explained in more detail below. By disconnection, we mean removal of the battery module 10 so that it is separated from the remainder of the bicycle 1000. The battery module 10 may include other features, such as a handle 39 which may be rigidly connected to, or pivotably connected to, a part of the battery module 10.

[0059] As shown in figures 8 and 13, the second frame portion 120 includes an upper frame member 122 and a lower frame member 124. Each of the frame members 122, 124 is positioned to a common side of the rear wheel 50b. In embodiments, both of the frame members 122, 124 may be positioned to the left side of the rear wheel 50b, or both frame members 122, 124 may be positioned to a right

[0060] H16521 WO side of the rear wheel 50b, with left and right sides being determined by the typical orientation of a user when they are seated on the bicycle 1000 in normal use.

[0061] In embodiments a space 160 may be at least partially defined between the upper and lower frame members 122, 124. The space 160 may be sized so as to receive a part of the battery module 10, such as a part of the battery housing 30. As shown in the figures, the space 160 may receive a part of the battery module 10 when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition. When the second frame portion 120 is in its stowed condition, the space 160 does not receive a part of the battery module 10. In this scenario, the battery module 10 protrudes generally rearwardly away from the first frame portion 110. Advantageously, when the second frame portion 120 is in its stowed condition, access to the battery module 10 is unobstructed by the second frame portion 120 and as such, the battery module 10 may be disconnected from the first frame portion 110. When disconnected, the battery module 10 may be subsequently removeable from the first frame portion 110 in a direction rearwardly away from the first frame portion 110, and also in a direction laterally away from the first frame portion 110 (i.e., sideways or at a sideways angle relative to the first frame portion 110). The battery module 10 may also be subsequently removeable from the first frame portion 110 in a generally vertical direction (i.e., upwards or downwards). This is particularly beneficial as it enables the battery module 10 to be removed in a multitude of directions. For example, if a user has stored the bicycle 1000 in its stowed condition in a location where there is little or no access to the sides of the bicycle 1000, the user may remove the battery module 10 rearwardly. Similarly, if space is limited rearwardly of the bicycle 1000, the battery module 10 may be removed laterally from the bicycle 1000.

[0062] When the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition, parts of the second frame portion 110, such as the upper and lower frame members 122, 124 may be positioned adjacent parts of the battery module 10. In other words, parts of the second frame portion 120 may at least partially surround the battery module 10. As shown in the figures, the battery housing 30 of the battery module 10 may include a side portion 32. When the battery module 10 is connected to the first frame portion 110, the side portion 32 may at least partially extend into the space 160 between the upper and lower frame members 122, 124, when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition.

[0063] As shown in the figures, in embodiments, the upper and lower frame members 122, 124 may form a shaped structure, such as a generally V-shaped or U-shaped structure. The skilled person would readily understand that the upper and lower frame members 122, 124 may form alternative shapes, depending on the design and construction requirements of the second frame portion 120. Additionally, the space 160 may also generally conform in shape to the shape formed by the upper and lower frame members 122, 124, and as shown in the figures, at least a portion of the shape of the space may be generally triangular.

[0064] H16521 WO In embodiments, at least a portion of the side portion 32 of the battery housing 30, which extends at least partially into the space 160, may be shaped so as to generally conform to the shape of at least a portion of the space 160 between the upper and lower frame members 122, 124. As shown in the figure 6, upper and lower edges 321 , 322 of the side portion 32 which are adjacent the upper and lower frame members 122, 124 are shaped such that they generally conform to the shape of the upper and lower frame members 122, 124 and the perimeter of the space 160. In the figures, it can be seen that the upper and lower edges taper or slope towards each other. It should be understood that whilst the shape of the side portion 32 generally conforms to the shape of the part of the space 160 of which the side portion 32 extends into, the dimensions of the side portion 32 may not correspond exactly to the dimensions of the space 160, so that sufficient clearance between the side portion 52 and the upper and lower frame members 122, 124 may be provided. In other embodiments, it should be understood that the side portion 32, or another of the portions 34, 36, 38 set out below, may not conform to the shape of the space 160, but may still at least partially extend into the space 160. For example, in embodiments, the side portion 32 may be formed as a generally hook-shaped portion which at least partially extends into the space 160, such movement of the battery module 10 past the upper or lower frame member 122, 124 may be prevented or at least inhibited. In other embodiments, the side portion 32 may be formed as any other appropriate shape which at least partially extends into the space 160, and may be formed as a part of the battery housing 30, or a part which is connected or connectable to the battery housing 30.

[0065] Advantageously, when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use condition, the upper and lower frame members 122, 124 of the second frame portion 120 may prevent or at least inhibit disconnection of the battery module 10 from the first frame portion 110. This is due, at least in part, to the side portion 32, particularly when its shape conforms to the shape of the space 160 as described above, extending into the space 160, as generally vertical movement (i.e., generally upwards or downwards) is generally prevent or at least inhibited as the path of movement of the battery module 10 is impeded or blocked by the upper and lower frame members 122, 124.

[0066] In embodiments, the second frame portion 120 may include a further upper frame member 123 and a further lower frame member 125, each member 123, 125 positioned to the other side of the rear wheel 50b relative to the upper and lower frame members 122, 124. In other words, if the upper and lower frame members 122, 124 are positioned to the right side of the rear wheel 50b, the further upper and lower frame members 123, 125 may be positioned to the left side of the rear wheel 50b.

[0067] Similar to the upper and lower frame members 122, 124, a further space 162 may be at least partially defined between the further upper and lower frame members 123, 125. The further space 162 may be sized so as to receive a part of the battery module 10 when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition.

[0068] H16521 WO When the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition, the further upper and lower frame members 123, 125 may be positioned adjacent parts of the battery module 10. As shown in figure 5, the battery housing 30 of the battery module 10 may include a further side portion 34, positioned generally opposite the side portion 32. When the battery module 10 is connected to the first frame portion 110, the further side portion 34 may at least partially extend into the further space 162 between the further upper and lower frame members 123, 123, when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition

[0069] In embodiments, the further upper and lower frame members 123, 125 form a shaped structure, such as a generally V-shaped or U-shaped structure. In embodiments, the further upper and lower frame members 123, 125 may be generally similar, or identical, in general construction to the upper and lower frame members 122, 124. When viewed from above, the further upper and lower frame members 123, 125 may generally mirror the upper and lower frame members 122, 124. The further space 162 may also generally conform in shape to the shape formed by the further upper and lower frame members 123, 125, as shown in the figures. As such, the further space 162 may be of a similar, or identical, shape to the space 160, and the further space 162 may be located generally opposite the space 160. In other embodiments, the skilled person would readily understand that the further upper and lower frame members 122, 124 may differ in shape and / or construction to the upper and lower frame members 122, 124, depending on the design and construction requirements of the second frame portion 120. Additionally, the space 160 may also generally conform in shape to the shape formed by the upper and lower frame members 122, 124, and as shown in the figures, at least a portion of the shape of the space may be generally triangular.

[0070] In embodiments, at least a portion of the further side portion 33 of the battery housing 30, which extends at least partially into the further space 162, may shaped so as to generally conform to the shape of at least a portion of the space 162 between the further upper and lower frame members 123, 125. As shown in figure 7, upper and lower edges 341 , 342 of the further side portion 34 which are adjacent the further upper and lower frame members 123, 125 are shaped such that they generally conform to the shape of the further upper and lower frame members 123, 125 and the perimeter of the further space 162. It should be understood that whilst the shape of the further side portion 34 generally conforms to the shape of the part of the further space 162 of which the further side portion 34 extends into, the dimensions of the further side portion 34 may not correspond exactly to the dimensions of the further space 162, so that sufficient clearance between the further side portion 32 and the further upper and lower frame members 123, 125 may be provided.

[0071] In embodiments, the side portion 32 and further side portion 34 of the battery housing 30 may extend equidistantly into their respective spaces 160, 162. In other words, the distance by which the side portion 32 and further side portion 34 extend into their respective spaces 160, 162 may be generally

[0072] H16521 WO equal or equivalent. In other embodiments, such as those shown in figure 12, the further side portion 34 may extend further into the further space 162 when compared to the degree of which side portion 32 extends into the space 160. In other embodiments, this relationship may be reversed. This may be advantageous in ensuring that either the side portion 32 or further side portion 34 avoid other components of the bicycle 1000, such as a chain connected to the pedal assembly 70.

[0073] Advantageously, when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use condition, the further upper and lower frame members 123, 125 of the second frame portion 120 may prevent or at least inhibit disconnection of the battery module 10 from the first frame portion 110. This is due, at least in part, to the further side portion 34, particularly when its shape conforms to the shape of the further space 162 as described above, extending into the further space 162, as generally vertical movement (i.e., generally upwards or downwards) is generally prevent or at least inhibited as the path of movement of the battery module 10 is impeded or blocked by the further upper and lower frame members 123, 125.

[0074] In embodiments, the upper frame member 122 and further upper frame member 123 at least partially define an upper space 164, between said members 122, 123. The upper space 164 may be sized so as to receive a part of the battery module 10 when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition.

[0075] When the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition, the upper and further upper frame members 122, 123 may be positioned adjacent parts of the battery module 10. The battery housing 30 of the battery module 10 may include an upper portion 36. When the battery module 10 is connected to the first frame portion 110, the upper portion 36 may at least partially extend into the upper space 164 between the upper and further upper frame members 123, 123, when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition The upper space 164 may also generally conform in shape to the shape formed by the upper and further upper frame members 122, 123, as shown in the figures.

[0076] In embodiments, at least a portion of the upper portion 36 of the battery housing 30, which extends at least partially into the upper space 164, may shaped so as to generally conform to the shape of at least a portion of the upper space 164 between the upper and further upper frame members 122, 123. As shown in the figures 6 and 7, side edges 361 , 362 of the upper portion 36 which are adjacent the upper and further upper 122, 123 are shaped such that they generally conform to the shape of the upper and further upper frame members 122, 123 and the perimeter of the upper space 164. It should be understood that whilst the shape of the upper portion 36 generally conforms to the shape of the part of the upper space 164 of which the upper portion 36 extends into, the dimensions of the upper portion 36 may not correspond exactly to the dimensions of the upper space 164, so that

[0077] H16521 WO sufficient clearance between the upper portion 34 and the upper and further upper frame members 122, 123 may be provided.

[0078] Advantageously, when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use condition, the upper and further upper frame members 122, 123 of the second frame portion 120 may prevent or at least inhibit disconnection of the battery module 10 from the first frame portion 110. This is due, at least in part, to the upper portion 36, particularly when its shape conforms to the shape of the upper space 164 as described above, extending into the upper space 164, as generally lateral movement (i.e., generally sideways movement) is generally prevented or at least inhibited as the path of movement of the battery module 10 is impeded or blocked by the upper and further upper members 122, 123. When the battery module 10 includes an upper portion 36 in addition to at least one side portion 32, 34, disconnection of the battery module 10 is prevented in several directions.

[0079] In embodiments, the lower frame member 124 and further lower frame member 125 at least partially define a lower space 166, between said members 124, 125. The lower space 166 may be sized so as to receive a part of the battery module 10 when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition.

[0080] When the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition, the lower and further lower frame members 124, 125 may be positioned adjacent parts of the battery module 10. The battery housing 30 of the battery module 10 may include a lower portion 38. When the battery module 10 is connected to the first frame portion 110, for example via connection to docking or retaining assembly 300, or directly to the first frame portion 110, the lower portion 38 may at least partially extend into the lower space 166 between the lower and further lower frame members 124, 125, when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition The lower space 166 may also generally conform in shape to the shape formed by the lower and further lower frame members 124, 125, as shown in the figures.

[0081] In embodiments, at least a portion of the lower portion 38 of the battery housing 30, which extends at least partially into the lower space 166, may shaped so as to generally conform to the shape of at least a portion of the lower space 166 between the lower and further lower frame members 124, 125. As shown in figures 5 and 7, side edges 381 , 382 of the lower portion 38 which are adjacent the lower and further lower frame members 124, 125 are shaped such that they generally conform to the shape of the lower and further lower frame members 124, 125 and the perimeter of the lower space 166. It should be understood that whilst the shape of the lower portion 38 generally conforms to the shape of the part of the lower space 166 of which the lower portion 38 extends into, the dimensions of the lower portion 38 may not correspond exactly to the dimensions of the lower space 166, so that sufficient clearance between the lower portion 38 and the lower and further lower frame members 124, 125 may be provided.

[0082] H16521 WO Advantageously, when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use condition, the lower and further lower frame members 124, 125 of the second frame portion 120 may prevent or at least inhibit disconnection of the battery module 10 from the first frame portion 110. This is due, at least in part, to the lower portion 38, particularly when its shape conforms to the shape of the lower space 166 as described above, extending into the lower space 166, as generally lateral movement (i.e., generally sideways movement) is generally prevented or at least inhibited as the path of movement of the battery module 10 is impeded or blocked by the lower and further lower members 124, 125. When the battery module 10 includes a lower portion 36, in addition to an upper portion 36 and / or at least one side portion 32, 34, disconnection of the battery module 10 is prevented in several directions.

[0083] In embodiments, the battery module 10, or the battery housing 30, defines at least one recess 40. In embodiments of a battery module 10 which include a side portion 32 and / or a further side portion 34 in conjunction with an upper and / or lower portions 36, 38. In such embodiments, the recess 40 may be formed between two neighbouring portions, for instance, between the side portion 32 and the upper portion 36. The battery module 10 may contain multiple recesses 40a, 40b, 40c, 40d, 40e, 40f. The following description of a recess 40 will be made with reference to one recess 40. However, the skilled person would readily understand that the following features may be present on multiple recesses 40a, 40b, 40c, 40d, 40e, 40f.

[0084] In embodiments, the recess 40a in the battery housing 30 may be formed between the side portion 32 and the upper portion 36. The recess 40a may extend from a first end 30a of the battery module 30, with the first end being adjacent the first frame portion 110 when the battery module 30 is connected to said frame portion 110, to a second end 30b of the battery module 30 which may be generally opposite the first end 30a.

[0085] In embodiments, when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition, a part of the second frame portion 120 is positioned within the recess 40a. For instance, at least a portion of the upper frame member 122 may be positioned within the recess 40a, such that at least a portion of the upper frame member 122 is at least partially surrounded by a part of the side portion 32 and a part of the upper portion 36.

[0086] In embodiments, the recess 40a may be shaped such that it generally conforms to the shape of the corresponding adjacent part of the upper frame member 122. It should be understood that whilst the shape of the recess 40a generally conforms to the shape of the adjacent part of the upper frame member 122, dimensions of the recess 40a may not correspond exactly to the dimensions of the upper frame member 122, so that sufficient clearance between the recess 40a and the upper frame member 122 may be provided.

[0087] H16521 WO As set out above, the battery module 30 may include multiple recesses. The recess 40a formed between the side portion 32 and the upper portion 36 may be a first recess 40a. The battery module 30 may further include a second recess 40b formed between the side portion 32 and the lower portion 38, a third recess 40c formed between the further side portion 34 and the upper portion 36 and a fourth recess 40d formed between the further side portion 34 and the lower portion 38.

[0088] In other embodiments, the battery module 10 may include other recesses 40e, 40f which may be positioned adjacent other parts of the second frame portion 120 when said portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition. This may include an upper recess 40e, which is extends laterally across the second end

[0089] As set out above, parts of the second frame portion 120, such as the upper and lower frame members 122, 124 form a generally V-shaped or U-shaped structure. As a result, the upper and lower members 122, 124 generally converge towards each other as they extend rearwardly away from the first frame portion 110. Ensuring that the relevant portions 32, 34, 36, 38 and the recesses 40a, 40b, 40c, 40d of the battery housing 30 generally conform to the shape of the adjacent frame members 122, 123, 124, 125 means that parts of the battery module 10 will also generally converge towards each other as they extend from the first end 30a of the battery module 10 to the second end 30b of the battery module 30. As such, when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition, the decreasing distance between the upper and lower frame members 122, 124 at least will prevent rearward movement of the of the battery module 30 relative to the first frame portion 110. In other words, if disconnection and rearward movement of the battery module 30 is attempted, said movement will be prevented or at least inhibited by the second frame portion 120, in addition to the prevention or inhibition of movement in other directions described above. In other words, the battery module 10 is generally retained in place by the rear frame portion 120.

[0090] It should be borne in mind that if a clearance is provided between the relevant portions 32, 34, 36, 38 I recesses 40a, 40b, 40c, 40d, and the relevant frame members 122, 123, 124, 125, movement of the battery module 30 may be possible, but such movement would be considered negligible and insufficient to disconnect the battery module 10 as the battery module 30 will become wedged between the relevant frame members 122, 123, 124, 125.

[0091] The provision of a second frame portion 120 which prevents or at least inhibits disconnection of the battery module 10 from the first frame portion 110, and which is pivotably moveable relative to the first frame portion between in-use ridable and stowed conditions, is advantageous in several aspects. Firstly, when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition, disconnection and removal of the battery module 10 is prevented or at least inhibited, in any direction, without the use of additional features such as locking mechanisms, tethers, etc. This is not possible when used with a bicycle which does not include a pivotably moveable second frame portion, as a battery module

[0092] H16521 WO must necessarily be able to be removed from the frame portion which generally surrounds the battery module, and therefore movement in a specific direction is always possible. Alternatively, in certain constructions of bicycles, positioning the battery module within any part of the frame is avoided, with the battery module being attached to another part of the frame, such as the handlebar stem. As such, undesired disconnection of the battery module is possible, potentially whilst the bicycle is in use (for example, the battery module may be shaken loose by movement over certain terrains, or a nefarious passerby may disconnect the battery module when the bicycle is stationary). Additionally, the battery module 10 may be at least partially protected from impact damage when the second frame portion 120 is in its in-use ridable condition. By comparison, embodiments of a bicycle 1000 including a pivotably moveable second frame portion 120 may prevent or inhibit inadvertent disconnection of the battery module 10 when the bicycle 1000 is being ridden, or when it is stationary but in the in-use ridable condition.

[0093] Additionally, for bicycles which do not include a pivotably moveable frame portion which at least partially surrounds the battery, if the battery module is at least partially surrounded by a nonmoveable frame portion then it is typical that the battery module can only be removed in one direction, such as vertically upwards. Not only does this limit the user’s ability to remove the battery module when the bicycle is in limited space conditions, but it also often results in a need to move other parts of the bicycle to provide full access to the battery module, such as the seat post. Conversely, embodiments of the bicycle 1000 including a pivotably moveable second frame portion 120 advantageously allow the battery module 10 to be disconnected and removed from the first frame portion 110 in multiple directions away from first frame portion 110.

[0094] A further benefit of the above embodiments of a bicycle 1000 is that the battery module 10 may be occupy spaces in the bicycle frame 100 which normally could not be occupied by a battery module in other constructions discussed above. This means that the shape of the battery module 10 can be optimised in several dimensions, which may result in a higher capacity battery module 10, and it may be possible to incorporate more features, such as LEDs, charging ports, control electronics without sacrificing overall battery capacity. Optimisation of the dimensions of the battery module 10, which may be a relatively heavy component of an electric bicycle, may also result in a better weight distribution as it is possible for parts of the battery module 10 to extend laterally relative to the central portion 31 of the battery housing 30, meaning that the battery module 10 may be formed such that its centre of mass is in an advantageous location.
