Abstract

This optical amplifier 1 includes: an amplification optical fiber 22 having a core region 221 to which a rare earth element is added; an excitation optical fiber 23 for propagating excitation light emitted from an excitation light source 11; an optical fiber 21 for propagating signal light; and a combiner 12 which is connected to the amplification optical fiber 22, configured to combine the excitation light and the signal light and input the combined light into the amplification optical fiber 22, wherein the signal light propagates through the core region 23 of the amplification optical fiber 22, the excitation light propagates through a cladding region 222 of the amplification optical fiber 22, and the core diameter of the excitation optical fiber 23 is equal to or less than the diameter of the cladding region 222 of the amplification optical fiber 22.
