Abstract

An extractor fan (125) suitable for installation on the exterior (103) of a house in areas at risk of bush fires, the fan having a fire proof cap and fire proof housing and an outlet therefrom covered with a metal mesh having a mesh size of 2 mm or less. All electrical wiring to and within the fan is sheathed with metal to prevent the escape of melted or burning insulation in the event of a bush fire. A metal non return flap is located at the base of the fan unit and above a metal chimney portion connected to the fan unit. The chimney unit is designed to fit within a reinforcing metal plate to be secured to the roof to protect an aperture cut in the roof for the insertion of the chimney therethrough. When installed the lower portion of the chimney (inside the house) is connected to a fire-resistant flexible steel duct (102) having at least two horizontal runs (111, 112) between the chimney and an internal extractor hood.
