[0065] Any member in a list of species that are used to exemplify or define a genus, may be mutually different from, or overlapping with, or a subset of. or equivalent to, or nearly the same as, or identical to, any other member of the list of species. Further, unless explicitly stated, such asDocket No. 1094755-00- WO-OLOC when reciting a Markush group, the list of species that define or exemplify the genus is open, and it is given that other species may exist that define or exemplify the genus just as well as, or better than, any other species listed.
[0066] The phrases, “a mixture thereof,” “a combination thereof,” or a combination of two or more thereof’ do not require that the mixture include all of A, B, C, D, E, and F (although all of A, B,C. D, E, and F may be included). Rather, it indicates that a mixture of any two or more of A, B, C,D, E, and F can be included. In other words, it is equivalent to the phrase “one or more elements selected from the group consisting of A, B, C. D, E, F, and a mixture of any two or more of A, B, C, D, E, and F.” Likewise, the term “a salt thereof’ also relates to “salts thereof.” Thus, where the disclosure refers to “an element selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt thereof, and a mixture thereof,” it indicates that that one or more of A, B, C, D, and F may be included, one or more of a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F may be included, or a mixture of any two of A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F may be included.
[0067] All components and elements positively set forth in this disclosure can be negatively excluded from the claims. In some instances, the oral care compositions of the present disclosure may be substantially free of non-incidental amounts of the ingredient(s) or compound(s) described herein. A non-incidental amount of an ingredient or compound is the amount of that ingredient or compound that is added into the oral care composition by itself. For example, an oral care composition may be substantially free of a non-incidental amount of an ingredient or compound, although such ingredient(s) or compound(s) may be present as part of a raw material that is included as a blend of two or more compounds.
[0068] Some of the various categories of components identified may overlap. In such cases where overlap may exist and the oral care composition includes both components (or the composition includes more than two components that overlap), an overlapping compound does not represent more than one component. For example, certain compounds may be characterized as both a polyol source and a sweetener. If a particular oral care composition recites both a polyol and a sweetener, xylitol will serve only as either a polyol or a sweetener — not both.Docket No. 1094755-00- WO-Ol-OC
[0069] For readability purposes, the chemical functional groups are in their adjective form; for each of the adjectives, the word “group” is assumed. For example, the adjective “alkyl” without a noun thereafter, should be read as “an alkyl group.”
[0070] Aspects of the invention are directed to oral care compositions adapted for being dispensed with a pump as well as oral care products comprising an oral care composition and having a pump to dispense such oral care composition. Formulating oral care compositions for use with a pump (e.g., a lotion pump) is challenging as drying out or clogging in the nozzle of the pump, balancing the viscosity and pumpability of the oral care composition, and maintaining oral care efficacy are challenges. The inventors discovered that the problem of drying out or clogging in the nozzle of a pump can be overcome utilizing certain oral care compositions specifically adapted for dispensing with a pump. For instance, the inventors discovered that oral care compositions having particular polyol systems, thickening systems, and certain surfactants achieve a preferred instability index of 0.04 or less, more preferably about 0.025 or less, more preferably about 0.02 or less, as measured according to a Lumisizer test, which is indicative of a reduction in clogging and / or drying out in the nozzle of a pump, while simultaneously achieving desirable pumping viscosity and pumpability.

[0115] Four non-limiting example oral care compositions were prepared in the form of dentifrices in accordance with aspects of the invention. Four comparative compositions (Comparative Compositions 1-4) were also prepared in the form of dentifrices. The formulas used for Example Compositions A-D and Comparative Compositions 1-4 are provided in Table 1.Docket No. 1094755-00- WO-OLOCTable 1Example 2
[0116] Example Compositions A-D and Comparative Compositions 1-4 were disposed in an oral care container comprising a body defining a chamber and a pump. The oral care containers and respective dentifrices therein were placed in a controlled environment having a temperature of 49° C for 1 day to age the respective dentifrices. The oral care containers were evaluated for clogging withing the pump.
[0117] Example Compositions A-D and Comparative Compositions 1-4 were then evaluated to assess their stability. Specifically, a Lumisizer test is conducted to predict the stability of formulations. The Lumisizer analytical centrifuge test (referred to herein also as a “Lumisizer test”) is a test method that aims to predict gravity-driven separation of toothpaste formula within its intended shelf life. In general, the instability index of 0.05 or less suggests a shelf life of at least 2 years. A lower instability index indicates better product stability performance and a significantDocket No. 1094755-00- WO-Ol-OC reduction of clogging within the pump. The instability index for Example Compositions A-D and Comparative Compositions 1-4 is shown in FIG. 3Example 3
[0118] The rheology properties, including the pumping viscosity, pumping force, and yield stress for Example Compositions B and D and Comparative Compositions 1 and 2 were evaluated. The pumping viscosity indicates the gel dispensing performance. The yield stress indicates the amount of stress to make the oral care composition flow through the pump. A summary of the pumping viscosity, pumping force, and yield stress for Example Compositions B and D and Comparative Compositions 1 and 2 is provided in Table 2.Table 2
