Abstract

The current invention relates to a method for extracting oil from a microbial biomass 5 comprising the steps of: mechanically lysing a microbial biomass, thereby obtaining a fat-in-water emulsion; churning the fat-in-water emulsion, thereby obtaining a water-in-fat emulsion and an aqueous phase; and performing an oil-extraction step on the water-in-fat emulsion, thereby obtaining a microbial oil containing fraction.
