AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing vehicle lamps with light distribution adjustment mechanisms are complex, large, and limited in variation due to the need for multiple light sources to achieve different light distributions, complicating the structure and increasing size.

Method used

A lighting device for vehicles that uses a light distribution control device with at least one lens layer capable of producing multiple voltage-activated lens characteristics, allowing light to be diffused in different directions to create varied light distributions with fewer light sources, minimizing structure and size while enhancing design flexibility.

Benefits of technology

The solution achieves miniaturization, simplification, and increased design freedom for light distribution, ensuring sufficient light intensity and reducing glare, particularly during vehicle turns, while maintaining compactness and agility.

Abstract

The purpose of the present invention is to improve the degree of freedom in design of light distribution of a lighting device used in a vehicle with a small number of light sources, while reducing the size and simplifying the structure of the lighting device. This lighting device comprises: a light source; and a light distribution control device configured to form a light distribution by emitting light from the light source and to be capable of changing the light distribution. The light distribution control device includes at least one lens layer and is configured to be capable of changing a voltage applied to the at least one lens layer to thereby develop a plurality of mutually different voltage application time development lens characteristics in the same portion when viewed in a direction in which the optical axis of light output from the light source extends. The plurality of lens characteristics are configured such that the directions in which light from the light source is diffused are different from each other. When changing the light distribution formed by the at least one lens characteristic, the light distribution control device enlarges the light distribution in a first direction and reduces the light distribution in a second direction intersecting the first direction.
