Abstract

The invention relates to a method for controlling a melt extrusion process of a polymer composition using a melt extruder comprising a die, the method involving * determining in a reference extrusion device comprising a die of known geometry, during a reference polymer extrusion run using the polymer composition, the fraction of the inner surface of the die to which particles adhere of a given polymer processing aid that is dosed to the reference extrusion device, under known polymer flow parameters, under steady state operation; * determining the surface quality of the polymer article that is obtained from the reference polymer extrusion run; * determining a relation between a property of the polymer article and / or a processing property, and the polymer processing aid efficiency; and * determining the quantity of the polymer processing aid that is to be dosed to the melt extrusion process using the determined relation. Such method allows for providing a flexible means for operating an extrusion process, enabling real-time control of the occurrence of melt fracture phenomena, including flow instabilities.
