AI Technical Summary
Existing agricultural compositions, particularly foliar applications, are inefficient in nutrient uptake due to the leaf cuticle's barrier and stomatal closure under stress, leading to poor absorption of nutrients like phosphorus and calcium.
Translocating formulations comprising a biopolymer, a weak acid, and an aldehyde, which enhance nutrient delivery and absorption by increasing laminar flow within the xylem and phloem of plants.
The formulations significantly improve the uptake and transport of nutrients and bioactives throughout the plant, enhancing plant growth, vigor, and yield under stress conditions.

Abstract
Description
ATTORNEY DOCKET NO. : CO AG-003 / 01 WO 351598-2008IN THE UNITED STATES PATENT AND TRADEMARK RECEIVING OFFICE INTERNATIONAL PCT APPLICATIONTRANSLOCATING TECHNOLOGY FOR AGRICULTURAL NUTRIENT UPTAKECROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION
[0001] This application claims the benefit of priority to U.S. Provisional Application No.63 / 746,846, filed on January 17, 2025, the entire contents of which are incorporated by reference herein.FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE
[0002] The present disclosure relates to translocating formulations for improving the uptake of nutrients and other compositions by agricultural crops. Also provided are combination compositions comprising the translocating formulation and other ingredients intended for uptake. Also provided are methods of making and using the formulations and compositions of the disclosure.BACKGROUND
[0003] Application and absorption of agricultural compositions can be highly inefficient. Foliar applications in particular can be challenging, because leaves can only absorb small amounts of nutrients at a time, making it impractical to meet the bulk of a plant's nutrient demands through foliar application. The leaf cuticle, a waxy layer that protects against water loss, impedes nutrient absorption. While nutrients can sometimes enter through stomata (tiny openings on the leaf surface), stomata close under stress, reducing absorption. In addition, some nutrients, such as phosphorus and calcium, are especially poorly absorbed through leaves.
[0004] There is an ongoing and unmet need for solutions to improve the efficiency of nutrient uptake by agricultural crops.BRIEF SUMMARY

[0137] Also provided by the disclosure are methods of making any of the translocating formulations and agricultural compositions disclosed herein.EXAMPLESExample 1: Illustrative Translocating Formulations of the Disclosure.
[0138] Table 1 provides exemplary ingredients for a translocating formulation of the disclosure. An illustrative translocating formulation was generated according to this formula with chitosan, phosphoric acid, acetic acid, formaldehyde, and water.Table 1: Example ranges for translocating formulation ingredients.
[0139] Without wishing to be bound by theory, the inventors hypothesize that the translocating formulation of the disclosure improves absorption of applied compounds into the phloem and xylem of the plant, allowing for bidirectional flow within the plant. See FIG. 1. The inventors 28330235352ATTORNEY DOCKET NO. : CO AG-003 / 01 WO 351598-2008also theorize that the translocating formulation improves nutrient uptake because the foliar uptake and transport of aldehyde is both rapid and bidirectional. See, for example, Su et al., “Foliar uptake and translocation of formaldehyde with Bracket plants (Chlorophytum comosum)” Journal of hazardous materials 2015;291:120-8, incorporated by reference herein for all purposes.Example 2: Accelerated diffusion of pigment within cut flowers.
[0140] Two cut white carnations were placed in water with the same concentration of pink pigment. One of the samples also included a translocating formulation prepared according to Example 1. FIG. 2 shows a photograph of the flowers several hours after being placed in the pigmented water: the water containing the translocating formulation accelerated the flow of pigment into the plant, resulting in a noticeably pinker hue in the white carnation petals, compared to the untreated control.Example 3: Improved uptake of calcium in apple trees using translocating formulation of the disclosure.Materials and Methods
[0141] A field trial location was established in a 6 year old orchard site of the variety “Premier Honeycrisp” that was planted in 12 ft rows with 3 ft between trees. The plot for each treatment condition consisted of 4 rows, each 725 ft long. The control and treated plots were separated by 6 buffer rows about 72 ft long. This Honeycrisp apple orchard has a history of high bitter pit incidence as well as soft fruit, both of which are linked to low calcium concentrations.
[0142] A translocating calcium composition was formulated comprising 10% w / w calcium, 3% w / w boron and 0.5-5.0% w / w of a translocating formulation according to Example 1. Three foliar applications were made using a blueline air-blast sprayer. The first application was made starting at bloom (day 0), at a rate of 16 oz / acre. The second application occurred 1 month later (day 29) at 22mm size fruit, at a rate of 32 oz / acre. The third application took place at day 76, at 35 mm size fruit, at a rate of 32 oz / acre.
[0143] The treatment was made in comparison to the control receiving commercial calcium practice. Both the treated plot and control plot received the same standard practice, including all fungicides, insecticides, PGRs, granular, and foliar fertilizers. Results
[0144] The resulting fruit was analyzed for nutritional content, results shown in Table 2. Most remarkably, these results demonstrate that the concentration of calcium in the treated apples 29330235352ATTORNEY DOCKET NO. : CO AG-003 / 01 WO 351598-2008was over 9-fold higher than in the control apples. Surprisingly, these results also show that 10 out of 13 tested elements were at a higher concentration in the treated apples compared to the control apples. Sodium was the same in both groups, and manganese and copper in the treated group were within 5 ppm of the control. These results demonstrate the powerful ability of a translocating formulation of the disclosure to improve the uptake of an agricultural composition by a host plant.Table 2: Nutrient Analysis of Honeycrisp Apples.Example 4: Improved uptake of calcium in strawberry plants using translocating formulation of the disclosure.
[0145] A trial of a calcium composition containing a translocating formulation of the disclosure was conducted on a 4 acre soilless strawberry farm in a greenhouse setting. The calcium composition was formulated comprising 10% w / w calcium, 3% w / w boron and 0.5- 5.0% w / w of a translocating formulation according to Example 1. Weekly leaf sap analyses were used to monitor plant health (NovaCropControl).
[0146] Prior to the trial, in fruiting strawberry plants, calcium applications were carried out over a 40-50 day period as follows: calcium nitrate was applied daily via irrigation to the root zone. Additionally, foliar applications of calcium oxide were made every 15 to 20 days. The primary goal was to raise calcium levels in young leaves to the desired range. However, this was not achieved successfully as shown for Day 0 in FIG.3, demonstrating virtually no change in the before and after calcium concentrations for young leaves. As a result, intermittent harvests led to yield losses.
[0147] On Day 3, the calcium composition was applied at a rate of 100 cc per decare. Leaf samples were collected for analysis on Day 7, four full days after the application. The results (see FIG.3 at Day 7) showed that, although calcium levels had not been successfully increased over a 40-50 day period during fruiting using conventional calcium application, a single application of a calcium composition containing a translocating formulation of the disclosure led to a 110% increase in calcium concentration in young leaves.30330235352ATTORNEY DOCKET NO. : CO AG-003 / 01 WO 351598-2008
[0148] After this applicaiton, calcium nitrate continued to be applied via irrigation. The inventors theorize that the translocating formulation remained active within the plant even 10 days after application, as it significantly enhanced the movement of calcium nitrate from the roots to the young leaves, as shown in the results on Day 14 of FIG. 3. The improved calcium uptake was also believed to strengthen the plant’s resistance to abiotic stress, as the plants were able to survive a three-day frost during this time period, with temperatures as low as -8°C. Example 5: Increased sugar and mineral content in cherry leaves following application of translocating calcium composition of the disclosure.
[0149] Frost damage in February and April of 2025 caused significant losses in the agricultural sector in Turkey. Early-season fruit groups were completely destroyed in February, while in April, orchards in full bloom and with high yield potential suffered heavy losses. As a result, it is estimated that fruit production across the country faced approximately a 55% yield loss.
[0150] A translocating calcium composition of the disclosure (10% w / w calcium, 3% w / w boron and 0.5-5.0% w / w of a translocating formulation according to Example 1) was tested in a field trial in open-field conditions. In a 600-decare cherry orchard that was heavily affected by the April frost — where not even a single fruit could be harvested — standard practices failed to increase calcium levels in the plants, resulting in underdeveloped fruit buds. However, with an application of 250 cc per decare of the translocating calcium composition, a significant number of young leaves were able to develop on the frost-damaged trees, increasing expectations for significant yields the following year. FIG. 4-8 show results of a plant sap analysis in five different cherry varieties from the same orchard prior to and following application of the translocating calcium composition. All five varieties showed an increase in the following parameters in one or both of young and mature leaves: calcium, magnesium, sugar, nitrate, total nitrogen, sulfur, boron, and molybdenum. All five varieties also showed a decrease in electrical conductivity in both young and mature leaves.Example 6: Translocating calcium composition trial in peanuts increases percent dry weight calcium in both peanuts and shells.
[0151] A translocating calcium composition of the disclosure (10% w / w calcium, 3% w / w boron and 0.5-5.0% w / w of a translocating formulation according to Example 1) was applied to peanut plants. Dry weight of calcium in both the peanuts and in the shells was calculated for treated plants and compared to control plants treated with conventional calcium compositions.31330235352ATTORNEY DOCKET NO. : CO AG-003 / 01 WO 351598-2008Results are shown in FIG. 9 and demonstrate a marked increase in calcium content in both peanuts and shells compared to untreated control.Example 7: Foliar fertilizer comprising translocating formulation markedly increases cotton yield.
[0152] A foliar fertilizer comprising a translocating formulation of the disclosure was tested in a field trial in cotton. The fertilizer (Fertilizer A) was a 0-20-20 fertilizer and contained 0.5-5.0% w / w of a translocating formulation according to Example 1. Fertilizer A was compared to an untreated (grower standard) control and to a 0-0-24 fertilizer (Fertilizer B) that did not contain the translocating formulation. Fertilizer A was applied at a rate of 1 pint / ac per application, while Fertilizer B was applied at a rate of 1 gallon / ac per application. Each fertilizer was applied twice - once at 8 nodes above white flower and once at five nodes above white flower. Results are shown in FIG. 10 and demonstrate a significant increase in cotton yield when using Fertilizer A in comparison to either the untreated control or application of Fertilizer B, in spite of being applied at a much lower rate - 2 pints / ac total for Fertilizer A compared to 2 gallons / ac for Fertilizer B.Example 8: Application of translocating calcium and boron composition more than doubles calcium and boron concentration in soybean trial.
[0153] A translocating calcium composition (10% w / w calcium, 3% w / w boron and 0.5-5.0% w / w of a translocating formulation according to Example 1) was applied to soybean plants. Mineral content was tested in recent fully developed leaves every week. On July 29th, prior to application, calcium content was 0.77% and boron was 72 ppm. After application of the translocating calcium and boron composition, calcium was reported at 1.74% and boron was 196 ppm. Increases over this time frame were also reported for zinc (42 ppm to 71 ppm), manganese (71 ppm to 174 ppm), iron (123 ppm to 241 ppm), and aluminum (12 ppm to 30 ppm). These results demonstrate that translocating formulations of the disclosure are able to facilitate improved uptake of nutrients and minerals in soybeans.Example 9: Illustrative compositions comprising translocating formulations of the disclosure.
