AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

There is a need for nonwoven fabrics with improved three-dimensional surface characteristics that maintain their shape and functionality during packaging and use, while also minimizing lint and providing softness and absorbency.

Method used

A nonwoven fabric with a pattern of three-dimensional features formed directly on a shaping belt using continuous spunbond filaments, which retains its shape and softness even after compression, and can be packaged efficiently with reduced stack height.

Benefits of technology

The fabric maintains its three-dimensional features and softness during packaging and use, reducing lint and providing improved absorbency and aesthetic benefits, while allowing for compact packaging that is easier to handle and distribute.

Abstract

A nonwoven fabric (10) having a first surface (12) and a second surface (14) and an optically detectable pattern of three-dimensional features (20, 22, 24) on one of the first or second surface (12, 14), wherein each of the three-dimensional features (20, 22, 24) defines a microzone having a first area (300) and a second area (310), wherein the first and second areas (300, 310) have a difference in value for an intensive property, wherein the intensive property is one or more of: a. thickness, b. base weight, and c. volumetric density; and wherein in at least one of the microzones the first area (300) has a contact angle greater than 90 degrees, as measured by the contact angle test method detailed herein, and wherein the second area (310) has a time-to-wick of less than 10 seconds, as measured by the time-to-wick test method detailed herein.
